Between launching the first game from 22 Cans,Kickstarting the second, and keynoting the Montreal International Game Summit, Peter Molyneux has been busy lately. Despite that, the famed designer has found time to get his hands on Nintendo's newest console, the Wii U, which launches tonight in the UK. Speaking with GamesIndustry International Molyneux expressed some mixed feelings on the hardware.
"I think the Wii U is good, but I don't feel it's great," Molyneux said. "I've played the experience, I've played Nintendo Land, I've played ZombiU, and they're good. I find holding the device in my hand--looking up at the screen and looking down at the device--slightly confusing as a consumer. It's good, but it's not great. And we really need these new pieces of hardware to be great in today's world, because the competition is not just consoles anymore. The competition is everything, all the technology. When you're holding a Kindle Fire or an iPad in your hand, it's just amazing technology. It really is. It's expensive, but it's amazing technology. And people like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft need to match that. They need to match that in my mind, and exceed it. And I'm not sure the Wii U really did that."
Reservations aside, Molyneux was particularly interested in the Wii U's focus on asymmetric gameplay and a seeming abundance of indie games headed to the platform. He also noted that his expectations for a Nintendo console launch may have been set unrealistically high by the Wii and its breakout success Wii Sports. And even if the system falls shy of greatness, Molyneux said he has "enduring faith" in Nintendo.
"I've got unvelievable respect for Nintendo. They created our industry in a very real sense. I can remember everybody in the industry laughing and giggling about how stupid the Wii was, what a stupid name it was, and who would want motion control. And then it went on to sell what, 60, 70 million copies? It got people who never considered computer games to play them."
GamesIndustry International will have more from the Molyneux interview, including his reactions to backlash over 22 Cans' Kickstarter project, tomorrow.

November 30th, 2012, 01:04 Posted By: wraggster
Third party support is crucial to any console launch, and Nintendo has done a sterling job of rallying publishers behind Wii U.
The new console will arrive with a day one line-up that includes Call of Duty, FIFA, Batman, Mass Effect, Skylanders, Tekken – the list goes on.
No publishers have shown more support than Ubisoft, which has no less than eight games ready for Wii U’s launch window. ZombiU is even bundled in with the console’s Premium model – the only third party title to be included in a hardware SKU.
The publisher has even helped the platform holder promote the new console.
“Since E3, Nintendo has been consistently building presence in consumers’ minds through their PR activities as well as events and media,” UK brand manager Ombeline Wallon told MCV. “Over that period, we have also been pushing our own games to position them as key choices for gamers who purchase the console. On some occasions such as E3, we’ve worked together to ensure maximum exposure for both companies.”
Another priority for Nintendo has been to win over the core audience and Ubisoft has helped attrach this demographic with titles such as ZombiU.
“We find core gamers and the technologically-minded tend to be the first adopters of new consoles,” said Wallon. “It’s no real surprise that games that appeal to this audience are more likely to perform well early on. As Wii U reaches broader audiences, we will see a shift in the types of games bought.”
Of course, Nintendo aims to appeal to both core and casual audiences with Wii U. As such, Ubisoft has tailored its launch day range to cater for all possible buyers (see ‘Ubisoft’s Line-up’ ).
As Nintendo has proven with titles like Wii Sports and Wii Play, an effective way to convey the selling points of a new console is to show everything it can do.
Wallon told us Ubisoft shares this ethos: “On each game, the teams have worked hard to make the most of the Wii U’s innovative features.
“For example, ZombiU gives a real array of interactions with the GamePad, using not only the traditional controls but also the touch screen and the gyroscope. In Rabbids Land, you can play the game entirely on the GamePad while someone else is watching TV. In Sports Connection, the GamePad and Wii Remotes give players very different experiences and adds to the replay value.”
Some speculate that Rayman Legends’ delay to Q1 2013 was to avoid clashing with Nintendo platformer New Super Mario Bros U.
But while there are similarities between the two titles – as well as other games like Your Shape 2013 and Wii Fit U, or Rabbids Land and Nintendo Land – Ubisoft maintains that there is plenty of room for such products on Wii U.
“All these titles have got their own strong identity,” said Wallon. “The artistic style of Rayman Legends really sets the game apart, in the same way that Rabbids’ crazy humour makes it very distinctive. There is room for several key brands with distinct personalities in the FPS?market. It is the same with Wii U games.”
The toughest challenge for Nintendo has been conveying the unique proposition of Wii U, and cementing it in the public mindset as the first next generation console.
While initial reactions to the console have been mixed, Ubi is confident the masses will come to understand how Wii U can change gaming.
“Once again, Nintendo is the first to bring something new to home consoles,” said Wallon. “The innovation brought by the Wii U marks a step change, which will become more obvious as users familiarise themselves with these new gameplay possibilities.”

Five days. In a tent. On the street. For a games console. Hurrah?
They set up their tent outside HMV Oxford Street on Saturday November 24th and tonight four students will at last get their hands on the pot at the end of their rainbow – the Wii U.
Izzy Rahman, Sing Duong and brothers Teddy and Michael Djuma – who together form development company Vertalex Studios London – decided who would officially be No.1 in the queue via a Mario Kart tournament. That Izzy Rahman won.
"We all grew up playing Nintendo, which is why we didn't want to miss out on tonight's official launch, and we just thought it would be fun to try to get to the front of the queue and enjoy the experience,” Rahman stated.
“It's been tough camping out in the rain and the cold, but it's been a laugh and it's also given us a chance to play loads on our 3DS handhelds and it's also given us the time to do some more games coding for our new business."
HMV’s Oxford Street store is the official launch venue for the new console and will be treated to extra stock to try and satisfy what is expected to be some very high demand.
Its doors will open at 11pm tonight. The first 100 in the queue will get a free copy of Super Mario Bros U and an additional freebie game from an HMV-picked selection.
"We can't wait to get the Wii U into the hands of our fans in the UK and are delighted to be partnering with HMV on this exciting night,” Nintendo UK marketing director Shelly Pearce stated.
“Not only will those that come down to HMV be amongst the first in the country to get their hands on the console but there will be lots of opportunities to try the games and to find out more about what makes Wii U such a unique new console."

Wii U’s processor runs at just 1.24GHz, less than half the speed of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The claim comes from Marcan, a hacker who was part of the HackMii project which greatly streamlined the process of getting homebrew software onto the Wii.In a series of posts on his Twitter account, Marcan confirms that Wii U’s CPU runs at a little over 1.24GHz. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 CPUs run at 3.2GHz. Wii U’s GPU core clocks in at a shade under 550MHz, which is the same as the PS3, and slightly more than Xbox 360′s 500MHz.Eurogamer’s Richard Leadbetter was quick to query whether Marcan’s findings were taken from an idle CPU, saying the reading seemed “really low”. If not, though, it would go some way to justifying comments made by the CTO at Metro Last Light developer 4A, who said last week that the Wii U’s CPU was“horrible” and “slow”.What is clear is that Marcan is already hard at work on breaching Wii U’s system security. When asked by Leadbetter for further details he said: “Sorry, I’d rather not talk about how I got that yet. It doesn’t involve leaks, it involves Wii U hacks.”

Exec admits users should be able to use all the console's functions straight out of the box
Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata has said he is "very sorry" to consumers for the 1gb day one Wii U update they must download.
Speaking to IGN, the console giant’s global president admitted users should not have to experience a network update to take advantage of all of the system’s functionalities, and that the Wii U should offer these from the off.
The mandatory update to access the console’s online services weighs in at 2gb in total, and could take some users several hours to download.
“Personally I think that users should be able to use all the functions of a console video game machine as soon as they open the box," said Iwata.
"So I feel very sorry for the fact that purchasers of Wii U have to experience a network update which takes such a long time, and that there are the services which were not available at the hardware’s launch."

via http://www.aep-emu.de/
The NES-Emulator Nestopia Undead has been updated to version 1.43.
Quote:
Introduction
What is this?
Nestopia is an emulator for the Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom (and Famicom Disk System). It is a computer program that acts like a physical piece of hardware. In other words, this is a method of preserving videogame history, with the welcome side effect of allowing you to play NES games on a modern computer.
History
Nestopia was started many years ago by Martin Freij, and quickly rose to fame for being one of the most accurate NES emulators around. Due to it being released as open source software, other people were allowed to enhance it. A Linux port was eventually done by R. Belmont, but the emulator, and the Linux port seem to have been abandoned since 2008.
What now?
A lot of bugs have been fixed and improvements have been made already. The emulator core is in pretty good shape already, so most of the improvements will be related to user-friendliness and modernity. Support for the BSDs is coming up, and there is a libretro port in the works. The Windows version is also being maintained, and will receive any updates to the core that may come, such as support for more mappers.
Changelog
Nestopia Undead 1.43:
Fullscreen mode defaults to native resolution
Completely rewrote the GTK+ GUI
More win32 stuff merged from Unofficial Build 1.41.1
Nestopia Undead 1.42:
Added native support for D-pads (Hat Switches)
Fixed the 100% CPU usage bug
Fixed the "Error writing setting!" bug (patch from Arch Linux)
Added an About dialog box
Added icons and a desktop menu entry
Nestopia Undead 1.41:
Fixed a braindead SRAM path issue
Merged win32 fixes from Unofficial Build 1.41.1
Nestopia 1.40-undead:
Ported to GTK+3
Added install/uninstall targets to Makefile
Changed default sound API to ALSA
Changed default renderer to OpenGL with a scale factor of 2
Changed binary name to "nestopia"
SRAM now saves to ~/.nestopia/save (for people who have roms on a read-only network share)
Automatically install a new nstcontrols file to ~/.nestopia if it doesn´t exist
Install NstDatabase.xml to a proper location on the filesystem instead of forcing the user to manually copy it to ~/.nestopia
Fixed numerous compiler warnings.
Features
Basic Features
All of the basic features you would expect are implemented:
Video Filters
Gamepad Support
Save States
Cheats
Soft Patching
NSF Player
Accuracy
Nestopia is extremely accurate, and as a result has very high compatibility. The NES hardware is emulated at cycle-by-cycle granularity.
Rewind
You can rewind your gameplay if you do something stupid. This is one of the coolest features ever, and helps prevent you from ruining your gameplay experience obsessing over save states.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Unofficial 1.41 - by Keith Kelly (c0d3h4x0r@hotmail.com) (March 29, 2010)
----------------------------------------------------------------
This is an unofficial maintenance release I created to fix an annoying joystick lag issue.
This lag was particularly bad when VSync was enabled. The original Nestopia author (Martin
Freij) appears to have abandoned the official Nestopia project on SourceForge and has not
responded to any of my e-mails, so I am left with no choice but to provide this unofficial
release as a public service to the emulation community.
Changes:
1. Removed manual option to set priority of Nestopia´s main emulation loop thread. Instead,
Nestopia now boosts its own process base priority AND its own main emulation thread priority
whenever it is the active foreground window (and/or running in full-screen mode). This brings
Nestopia much closer to real-time performance and responsiveness.
2. Removed some screwy input polling logic, and added some calls to input.Poll(), to ensure
that the input devices are always polled immediately before the input state is utilized.
This was the key change that got rid of most of the lag.
3. Removed some screwy input timing logic that was causing input polling to work only on
certain clock intervals, rather than allowing it to work every time it was called.
(As far as I can tell on my own hardware configuration, these three changes taken together
have completely eliminated the lag problems that have been present in Nestopia for several
releases. Your mileage may vary.)
4. Updated the Visual Studio solution/project to build successfully under Visual C++ 2008
Express Edition.
5. Added this releasenotes.txt file and bumped the version number to 1.41.
----------------------------------------------------------------
1.40 Release A-H - by R. Belmont
----------------------------------------------------------------
Linux Shell:
Additions:
- XML ROM support
- More flexible video configuration including OpenGL hardware scaling
- Input mapping in the GUI
- Cheat Manager with flexible support and import/export capability (win32 compatible format)
- Core logging is now enabled to the terminal you start NEStopia from for easier diagnosis of problems
- Automatic soft-patching added
- Coin inputs added for Vs. system
- Audio filters added for fun
- [Release C] Proper default nstcontrols file included
- [Release E] Added SDL audio driver, should be most compatible
- [Release G] Cheat Manager now shows descriptions on imported XML files. Also fixed a CM crash.
Changes:
- Complains more if it´s unable to write to the settings file
- Archive browser comes up automatically if you select a zip or 7zip archive with multiple NES files in it
- Option to select favored console
- [Release E] Refactored to get UI code out of main.cpp
- [Release G] Settings window auto-hides during emulation [enik]
Fixes:
- Fixed bug where keyboard input could stick
- [Release B] Cleaned up some crashy issues with the control configurator
- [Release D] Fixed ability to remap "meta" keys (keys that control NEStopia itself), fixed documentation on defaults.
- [Release E] Fixed quicksave/quickload
- [Release F] Fixed keyboard to ignore numlock/capslock
- [Release G] Taskbar description is set properly for the game window [enik]

Yesterday's news that Microsoft sold 750,000 units of Xbox 360 hardware in the US during Black Friday week shows just how strong the platform still is this late in the cycle, but it could also mean that consumers looking for Wii U and not finding one decided to go with the cheaper option this holiday. Is it bad news for Nintendo? Not really, say analysts.
"If we had to estimate, about 400k units of the 750k Xbox 360 units were from new consumers who did not own an Xbox 360 prior vs. the Wii U where 400k consumers did not have a Wii U prior. So in terms of who picked up the most new consumers, it's probably a dead heat. And of course there were about 200k to 300k consumers who couldn't even purchase a Wii U due to shortages, so I do have to wonder if the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 picked up some users due to the Wii U shortage," observed EEDAR's Jesse Divnich.
Reading into it anything beyond this holiday would be a waste of time, he added: "It's a little too early for us to make any declarations on the Wii U's long-term potential. They are off to a fair start and it will probably take another month to gauge where demand may be long-term for the Wii U."
RW Baird's Colin Sebastian agrees. "I do think the Wii U faces a lot of challenges, but one week's worth of data isn't enough to put the nail in the coffin," he said.
"Microsoft's short-term MSRP reduction was and is aimed directly at undercutting Wii U sales out of the gate"
Lewis Ward
Sony has yet to release its Black Friday numbers, but both Sony and Microsoft have been offering attractive bundles to consumers this holiday season, and the fact is that the economy is still depressed and consumers want value. Sure, Wii U is supply constrained, but for some, spending less money is just too appealing.
"The economy is still a bit weak, and consumers are looking for value. PS3 and Xbox 360 bundles are priced for value and are more likely to be gift purchases," noted Inside Network analyst Billy Pidgeon.
Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter added, "I think the strong Xbox 360 performance tells us that consumers remain price sensitive, and the recent cuts/bundles for the 360 present a compelling value. Once Wii U supply increases, I expect the console to sell better. That may not happen until next year."
IDC research manager Lewis Ward acknowledged that he thinks "Microsoft's short-term MSRP reduction was and is aimed directly at undercutting Wii U sales out of the gate" but he also remarked that what we're seeing now in the discrepancy between Xbox 360 and Wii U is nothing unusual.
"I never expected Wii U to outsell the Xbox 360 or for that matter the PS3 this holiday season. Nintendo effectively sold out the available Wii U units during the Black Friday week so it remains to be seen how many total units will be available at retail and will sell before the end of the year. Look at this another way: In late 2006, PS2 sales exceeded those of the Wii by a healthy margin - does that mean Nintendo should have thrown in the towel on Wii? Of course not. We've just seen the launch of brand new platform that will have growing pains and it's like judging a book by its cover in the extreme to draw long-term conclusions from Black Friday sales alone," Ward continued.
Ultimately, we'll have to wait several more months to properly assess how Wii U is faring, but strong interest in Xbox 360 could pose a problem for Nintendo, noted DFC Intelligence's David Cole: "Long-term the Xbox 360 doing well could be a problem because many of those buyers are potential Wii u consumers."

GameBoy Online (2012/11/26) is released. GameBoy Online is a Game Boy and GameBoy Color emulator written in Javascript. It strives to be efficient and try to have a perfect compatibility. Currently the execution speed is not optimal even on browsers. For example on Chrome, which is nevertheless deemed to run Javascript faster on a PC running Windows 7 64-bit version with a double heart 2 CPUs at 2.2 GHz, games run at normal speed but almost skipping some frames.
The sound production is still experimental and rather poor quality. The video portion is by HTML5 or by creating images with BMP string URI. State backups are implemented using the object window.localStorage and are serialized / deserialized JSON. Ditto for backup SRAM.
GameBoy Online Changelog:
- image-resize update.
- image-resize library update.

Dolphin new-ax-hle Git 3.0-842 is compiled. Dolphin new-ax-hle Git is a branch of Dolphin. Dolphin is the first Gamecube emulator able to run commercial games! Dolphin is a great Gamecube(NGC) and Wii emulator. It has a partial Wii support and plays most Gamecube games.
Dolphin wii-usb Git changelog:
* Improve savestates support in AX and AXWii
* Command 13 should upload only AUXA LRS, not MAIN LRS + AUXA LRS. Fixes more GC EA games sound/music (including FIFA 06, Madden 08).
* AUX return data should be mixed to main buffers, not AUX buffers. Fixes a regression introduced by r954c55e35afb, now EA games sound works again.
* Rewrite MixAUXSamples to make it more clean
* Implement command 07 in GC AX (download data to main LR and reset main surround)
