BoltThrower v0.71 released by TitMouse
Bolt Thrower is currently single player Space Shoot 'Em Up. It’s still work in progress and updates will happen whenever I can find the spare time. Every effort is being made to detach game data from the code, being 'data driven' anyone can change the look or functionality of the game. So I've exposed the data through a XML configuration file rather than lock the data into the code. Please submit your ideas, bug reports or anything else via the discussion page if you wish to help in any way.
Version 0.71 is now released - see Changelog This is probably my last Wii release. It's only a minor update, had modified code sitting around for well over 3 months doing nothing - so I've release this update rather than sit on the change which optimizes the prob mines, and I've reworded the credits as I never liked the older static layout.

Death may be deficient when it comes to charisma and skin tone, but he boasts one of the biggest adventures of the year in Darksiders 2. The Wii U version of the grim reaper's star vehicle is as roomy as a hearse and comes packingnearly all of the game's DLC right out of its new blue box.
The Wii U revision isn't too ambitious in utilizing Nintendo's new hardware, though this also spares us from obnoxious mechanisms that don't do justice to the game's original design. Pairing different weapons, powers and protective outerwear with Death's taut physique is a simple time saver on the Wii U's GamePad, and it's a great deal faster than the sluggish menu that shipped with the other versions. You can, of course, keep the original menu and play exclusively on the TV or your handheld screen.
There's some graphical tearing on the smaller screen, but otherwise Darksiders 2 comes close to technical parity with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. There appears to be more shadow pop-in within the larger areas, but the framerate holds up just as well (which is to say, it doesn't always hold up when fighting gets frantic). Attacks feel responsive through the game pad – the light click of the right shoulder button works especially well for Death's graceful dodge – and they all work through the Pro controller if you prefer. The face-button commands are not remapped, however, leading to considerable travel time for your right thumb between jumping on B and manipulating the camera via the right stick.
Other Darksiders detritus ends up on the Wiipad too: you jolt the controller to spur on your undead equine transportation (that's the thesaurus result on "zombie horse"), and you tilt it to roll around the impractical, spherical keys that tend to litter ancient temples. Neither of these are preferable to doing it the old-fashioned way, so it's just as well they're optional control methods.
The best addition to Darksiders 2 on Wii U is the inclusion of post-release content, offered separately on other systems. You can start using some bonus high-level weapons and armor once you exceed level 5, while "Argul's Tomb," a bonus campaign that can be accessed from the main menu, offers extra traversal puzzles involving portals and Death's ghostly grappling hook.
The overall game doesn't get the polish on Wii U that it needed on other platforms back in August, but it remains a majestic blend of melee combat, puzzle solving and exploration. And if you squint, it's the best Steven Tyler game since Revolution X!

There will surely be a slow trickle of Neo Geo games and the occasional Capcom release, but with the release of the Wii U, and the announcement of a Wii that drops literally all backward compatibility including the Virtual Console, I think we can safely assume the Wii Virtual Console is essentially dead. And having just now established its death, it seems like an appropriate, if artificial, opportunity to look back, to determine how successful an experiment Nintendo's old games marketplace was.
While there is plenty to lament about how the service turned out, it's easy to overlook just how unprecedentedly fantastic it is, even in its current state.

The Wii U's NFC (Near Field Communication) functionality was first seen working in a leaked trailer for Rayman Legends, but the game itself may release next year without any NFC functionality.
Creative director and Rayman creator Michel Ancel has said the footage shown was just a prototype and the feature has never been officially announced."We didn't announce this officially and it was more the kind of experiment we do when working on new hardware like the Wii U," said Ancel in an interview with the Official Nintendo Magazine.
"We had prototypes of this and we believe that having real objects manipulating gameplay could be quite innovative. But again, this was a prototype and we won't discuss it until it's ready to demonstrate its full potential," he said, stopping short of confirming the feature for the early 2013 sequel.
The leaked video in question showed toys being placed onto the Wii U controller in the style of Activision's Skylanders, which then transport new characters into the game.
In January Nintendo announced new NFC technology for the Wii U controller, but later confirmed that none of the system's launch games would make use of the feature.

That was quick. Scarcely two hours after Best Buy spoiled the party, Nintendo is launching the Wii Mini. The crimson console is billed as a Canada-exclusive for now -- we're reaching out to confirm if and when it might go elsewhere -- and is clearly meant to catch those families that find the Wii U(or even a regular Wii) too pricey. To get there, though, they'll have to make some big sacrifices. The Wii Mini cuts out bothGameCube compatibility (seen in some regular Wii variants) and, more importantly, internet access; unfortunately, this won't be your budget Netflix box. Still, when gamers in the Great White North can pick one up on December 7th for $100, it might be the ideal fit for that TV in the basement or the occasional party.

EA expects its Wii U launch titles to get plenty of attention next week.
Both FIFA 13 and Mass Effect 3 Special Edition will be releasing alongside the console on November 30th.
“It’s always an exiting time for the industry and consumers when new hardware is introduced,” said product marketing boss for EA Sports and Maxis Dan Holman.
“FIFA 13 is our best football game ever on a Nintendo console. The GamePad radically changes the way you can play FIFA and opens it up to gamers of all skill levels. We have high expectations for FIFA 13’s performance on Wii U as a triple-A launch title on all new HD platforms.”
FIFA 13 – which sold over 7.4 million copies worldwide in four weeks – will launch with new features for Wii U.
Meanwhile, Mass Effect 3 Special Edition will include all the additional DLC plus GamePad support.
“The Wii U represents a new opportunity for the industry this Christmas and it’s great that Mass Effect 3 Special Edition will be part of the launch,” said EA Games and BioWare business lead Colin Blackwood.
“This is the first time that the Mass Effect universe will be on a Nintendo console and we’re very excited at the prospect of a new audience. We expect it to be at the forefront of the Nintendo Wii U offerings at launch.”
EA is amongst the big Wii U third-party supporters, which includes Ubisoft, Activision, Sega, THQ, Tecmo Koei, Disney, Namco Bandai and Warner Bros.

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has said that Microsoft and Sony need to come up with their own innovations in response to Wii U, because simply speedier processors won't be enough.
"In the end, our competitors need to react to what we're doing in the marketplace and need to figure out what their innovation will be," Fils-Aime said in a chat with CNET."It's likely that faster processors and pretty pictures won't be enough to motivate consumers. They need to react to what we've done and we need to continue innovating with the Wii U - and we will."
Fils-Aime also rejected any notion that the Wii U was simply Nintendo moving to 'catch up' with Microsoft and Sony's HD consoles.
"For us, launching new systems is about bringing new consumer experiences to the marketplace and we're doing that with Nintendo Land and third-party publishers are doing it with games like ZombiU. For us, now is the right time to launch new hardware."
Nintendo claims to have sold 400,000 Wii U units during the system's first week of availability in the US.

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has explained why the developer is bringingAliens: Colonial Marines to Wii U, but not its hugely successful Borderlands games.
"We get asked if there is going to be a Wii U version of Borderlands," he told GamesMaster."The reason why there's not is because we couldn't think of a natural, obvious, 'OMG, I want that for what the Wii U brings to the table' feature."
This, however, was not the case with Aliens.
"But with Aliens, the first thing we thought was 'Holy shit, I can have a motion controller in my hands!' When it's there in my lap it feels like I'm part of the movie."

In the pre-post-PC era, life was simpler for Nintendo and other successful competitors: Sell console. Sell discs. Repeat until wildly profitable. Six years ago, as Microsoft and Sony were taking part in a game of specification leapfrogging, Nintendo embraced casual and family gaming with the Wii even as it mostly ignored online play and convergent entertainment features. More than half a decade later, Sony has surpassed the original Wiimote with its Move controller and Microsoft has created a motion anti-controller with Kinect, but the Wii retains an advantage in that developers can assume the motion control is there.
Today, everyone in the games business still adheres to the basic notion of compelling software selling hardware, but the source of that software and the manner through which it drives revenue has changed via models such as digital distribution, downloadable content, free-to-play, subscription and advertising. In addition, Nintendo has launched the Wii U into living rooms in which game consoles must compete not only with each other but with Blu-ray players, TiVos, Rokus andApple TVs for physical connections as well as smart TVs and tablets as other sources of connected entertainment experiences. How it has addressed these challenges reveals much about what the company has held dear from the Wii, what it has reluctantly accepted and what it has now embraced.

Want to relive the labors of setting up Nintendo's new console? How about taking the aural route? DJ Cutman has cut together an unofficial greatest hits album from the Wii U's built-in soundtrack, encompassing memorable 'hits' like the firmware update and menu tunes. We've embedded one of Nintendo's decidedly relaxed tracks after the break, while there's a little bit more info (and some download links) for the unofficial project at the source below.

Nintendo says new system is "essentially sold out," original Wii sells 300,000 over same stretch
The US launch of the Wii U was a virtual sell out, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime toldCNET today. In the week since its November 18 debut, the Wii U sold through more than 400,000 systems at US retailers.
"Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock," Fils-Aime said. "Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they're selling out immediately."
Despite being supply constrained, the Wii U was still the company's best-selling platform, accounting for about one-third of the more than 1.2 million pieces of Nintendo hardware US consumers purchased last week. The original Wii--for which Nintendo recently said it had no projects in development--was next on the list with 300,000 systems sold. Meanwhile, the 3DS line was outsold by the original DS systems, 250,000 to 275,000.
Fils-Aime said despite lagging behind the rest of Nintendo's hardware offerings, the 3DS has maintained a "record-setting" sales pace, topping 6 million in its first 21 months on sale. Last month, Nintendo lowered its full-year sales projections, blaming the move in part on disappointing 3DS sales.

November 26th, 2012, 23:54 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo’s impressive TVii service has been confirmed for Europe.
The previously North American only functionality will arrive in the region some time on 2013. In Nintendo’s words it “enables you to find, watch, and engage with TV shows and movies in entirely new ways”.
The blurb adds: “Using the Wii U GamePad, you can browse and search for programming from sources you subscribe to, including cable and satellite channels and video-on-demand services.”
TVii will allow users to access all their various streaming video services through the Wii U console, including Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and others. It’s powered by tech provided by i.TV.
Other functionality will be included, too, such as Universal Remote Control functionality for the GamePad as well as using the pricey peripheral for that much touted “second screen experience”.
This mainly comprises the ability to talk to others via a social network – specifically, Nintendo’s own social network. It will also offer additional information, such as stats for sports coverage or IMDB information for TV shows.
“Nintendo TVii makes watching TV more simple and fun by combining and displaying video content from a variety of sources all in one easy-to-use second screen experience,” NoA’s director of network business Zach Fountain said back in September. “i.TV’s strong legacy and commitment to reinventing TV make them an ideal partner to help bring Nintendo TVii to life.”
Nintendo has also promised some sort of level of compatibility with cable and satellite PVR boxes, though TiVo – which remains a big brand in the US – was the only brand named. Wider compatibility remains a question.

An unsubstantiated rumour has suggested Nintendo will unveil a second new console before Christmas.
Nintendo World Report claims to have word from “an internal release schedule from a major retailer” that it says it is “unable to disclose”. In it is mentioned a SKU including a Wii Mini console, sensor bar, nunchuk and Wii remote Plus.
A release date of December 7th is mentioned.
The Wii has previously undergone a very slight redesign that made the unit smaller at the expense of a few ports being lost. But this is the first talk of a ‘proper’ redesign along the lines of the Xbox 360 S or either of the PS3 Slims.
Still, unless the claims are backed up from other sources MCV advices extreme scepticism.

Bushnell predicts 'end of an era' for consoles, but former Microsoft exec Robbie Bach says Nintendo shouldn't be counted out
The founder of Atari has admitted he is baffled by Nintendo’s next-gen Wii U console and has raised doubts over its potential for success.
Speaking to the NYTimes, Nolan Bushnell, whose own company fell out of the console manufacturing market as Nintendo grew to prominence, said he believes it is the end of an era for the gaming giant and consoles in general.
“I actually am baffled by it,” said Bushnell.
“I don’t think it’s going to be a big success. These things will continue to sputter along, but I really don’t think they’ll be of major import ever again,” he says. “It feels like the end of an era to me.”
Nintendo has faced many questions over the capabilities of the Wii U console and exactly how it works since it was first unveiled.
But despite such questions and debate surrounding the console's potential, the Wii U has reportedly been selling out in the UK, proving there is demand for a new console on the market.
A number of high profile titles have also been released to the Wii U including Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Assassin’s Creed III and Batman: Arkham City, suggesting there is strong developer support early on for the console.
Also commenting on the chances of Nintendo’s success with the Wii U, former Microsoft president of entertainment and devices Robbie Bach said: “I’ve learned not to count the Nintendo guys out”.

Reggie Fils-Aime claims new console is more graphic intensive than other systems
Opinion remains divided on whether Wii U is able to match the visuals of the Xbox 360 and PS3 – unless you’re Reggie Fils-Aime, of course.
The outspoken boss of Nintendo America told CNN in a video transcribed by VG247 that he reckons the new machine has the beating of its current-gen rivals.
“The specs are quite different than the competitive systems, much more graphically intensive,” he stated. “If you do a side-by-side comparison you would see that third-party games like Call of Duty look dramatically better on our system.”
He also spoke positively of the console’s early sales performance in the US, although we’re yet to hear any official numbers.
“It’s selling extremely well here in the Americas. Already stocks are quite low in the marketplace; we’re rapidly replenishing. So for us, certainly the consumer’s deciding that the innovation is well worth their investment.”
