"Poor Iwata," jokes Curve Studio's Jonathan Biddle. "We think he's one of the best CEOs in the world. He needs a big hug."Fortunately, after a fairly torrid few months for Nintendo as its Wii U has been eclipsed by the newer current gen consoles, Biddle and his team's in the perfect position to give Satoru Iwata a little cheer. Curve has made the fascinating decision to make its follow-up to the well-received Stealth Bastard a Wii U exclusive. It's a curious decision, at least upon first impressions. Stealth Bastard was a hit on Steam when it released late in 2011, and it's gone on to further success on other platforms - via a name change to the more console friendly Stealth Inc., and through a handful of enhanced editions - so why limit its sequel to a console that, to put it politely, doesn't quite have the numbers behind it?Take a closer look, though, and it begins to make a little more sense. Curve, a London-based studio also known for its working helping indies such as Thomas Was Alone and Proteus onto PlayStation, previously developed Fluidity, a Wii download that came towards the end of that console's life-cycle, and that we described back in 2011 as "one of Nintendo's best ever WiiWare releases." A 3DS sequel, Fluidity: Spin Cycle, followed in 2012.

The Wii U version of Watch Dogs has Ubisoft's undivided attention, now that the other versions are finished, according to Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin.
Watch Dogs' release date is May 27 on PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. Ubisoft elected to push back the Wii U version so that it could free up more staff to finish the others on time.
Morin told Red Bull Games that work is completed and the Wii U version is back up to speed.
"Right now [the Wii U version is] currently being done, but I'm not directly involved," Morin said. "We wanted to finish all the platforms that we are currently shipping. We needed those guys to get [the shipping versions] finished, and the good news now is that they're all fully focused on the Wii U version, making sure it gets the attention it deserves to make it the best version it can be."
Morin specified that Watch Dogs was delayed to improve its hacking system. Some playtesters of the then-complete version would "go really deep into the manipulation and get really creative about things", creating unforeseen situations and issues.
"We decided to step back a bit and take the time to define how we could perform very surgical and precise ways to fix the problems," Morin said. "That's why we didn't have a new date immediately after the delay."
Ubisoft revealed the Watch Dogs Season Pass on Tuesday. A representative told us the pass will not be available on Wii U, though it will have more details to announce later.

A Premium Wii U with two games for £200 is exactly what Nintendo should be talking about.
And that’s what is available right now from Tesco for those who use a (likely limited time) discount code.
Tesco Direct is offering the Mario Kart 8 Premium Wii U bundle for £219.99. Use of the code TDX-JGCV at checkout (as per NeoGAF) brings this down to just £200.
Remember too that as announced yesterday the game will include a code to download one of ten other Wii U titles for free, including Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros and Wonderful 101.
Interested parties are best advised to act quickly – Nintendo is still charging £299.99 for its exclusive Mario Kart 8 Wii U bundle.

Format: Wii U Publisher/developer: Nintendo (EAD Tokyo) Origin: Japan Release: 2013
No tea tables were upended – as a Nintendo euphemism for radical changes towards the end of a game’s development goes – during the making of Super Mario 3D World. Since 2005’s Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, Nintendo EAD Tokyo has blossomed into one of the publisher’s finest assets, and it says much for the regard with which the group is held that Shigeru Miyamoto and fellow Nintendo veteran Takashi Tezuka felt comfortable taking a back seat, their responsibilities limited to “occasional spot checks”. The two designers of the original Super Mario Bros could rest easy: their most famous creation was in safe hands. The mandate presented to Nintendo’s elite development team was clear. Its aim, according to Miyamoto, was “to make a 3D home console Super Mario game that people who like the New Super Mario games can also enjoy”. In other words, to forge a stronger link between Mario’s two-dimensional obstacle courses and his more expansive 3D adventures. And not only in design terms, you suspect, but also to bridge the sales gap between the two.Plans were set in motion after Super Mario Galaxy 2 was completed. “We decided we should make an entirely new title, rather than another in the Galaxy series,” co-director Koichi Hayashida says. “Up until that point, we had only been working on games for the home console, so you might expect that we’d go on to develop a game for Wii U. In fact, we got really interested in creating a 3D Mario game that could be played with the 3D effect of 3DS. That’s why we chose to develop for the handheld system instead. Saying that, though, at that same point we also planned on making a version for Wii U. So, in that sense, you could say the game was in development for over three years.”All of the concept artwork you see in this feature is exclusive to Edge.
Hayashida admits that Nintendo may have had to reconsider its approach had Super Mario 3D Land been a failure. But the critical and commercial success of Mario’s 3DS debut encouraged the company to stay its course. With the help of Nintendo subsidiary 1-Up Studio (formerly known as Brownie Brown, which worked on the likes of Mother 3 and Heroes Of Mana), the largest development team in EAD Tokyo’s history began work on its Wii U spiritual sequel. And with the core concept established at a very early stage, there was plenty of time for experimentation.Indeed, the finished product bears the hallmarks of an eclectic approach to game design, one actively encouraged by the policies of co-director and team leader Kenta Motokura. Over 100 staff members were asked to come up with ideas, from throwaway gimmicks to entire level concepts, which were then displayed across dozens of Post-it notes stuck to the studio’s walls. So perhaps it’s little wonder 3D World sometimes feels generous to a fault, introducing ideas before throwing them away minutes later.“We discussed and discarded a huge number of ideas during development,” Motokura says. “Sometimes you just can’t tell if an idea is good or bad by looking at it on the drawing board; when this happens, we try it out in-game. If we don’t find the idea fun, it won’t make it into the final product. There was a lot of back and forth on the course designs due to this.”

With the launch of Mario Kart 8 just one month away, Nintendo has few details it has yet to share about the game, which will receive its own Wii U bundle next month. Of the details the publisher now offers on the game's site is a listing of the 32 race tracks players will tackle in late May, half of which are new courses, the rest being reimagined circuits from other games in the series.
We got our hands on the eight retro courses in the shell and banana cups during our video preview of the game. The other eight familiar tracks are as follows: Wario Stadium (DS), Sherbet Land (GCN), Melody Motorway (3DS) and Yoshi Valley (N64) in the Leaf Cup as well as Tick-Tock Clock (DS), Piranha Plant Pipeway (3DS), Grumble Volcano (Wii) and Rainbow Road (N64) in the Lightning Cup.
Head past the break for the full list of the 32 race tracks and eight battle courses in the game. Mario Kart 8 launches May 30 on Wii U, and those that register their copy of the game on Club Nintendo by July 31 will receive one free Wii U game on the eShop.

The Wii U version of Watch Dogs is getting attention now that the other platforms are done, which hopefully means it'll make its listed fall launch. The Nintendo console's version was delayed earlier this year to focus resources to where they could have the "broadest possible benefit," according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
"We wanted to finish all the platforms that we are currently shipping. We needed those guys to get [the shipping versions] finished, and the good news now is that they're all fully focused on the Wii U version, making sure it gets the attention it deserves to make it the best version it can be," said Watch Dogs creative director Jonathan Morin to Redbull Games.
The game will launch on other platforms May 27.

After April's Virtual Console rush it's two first-party games that headline this week's eShop releases, and they're both on 3DS. Kirby: Triple Deluxe tickled us pink in our review while Mario Golf World Tour was more par for the course, and you can take both of them out for a spin starting today.
Elsewhere, you can use the GamePad to read minds in oddball adventure Stick to the Man, or you can keep it old-school by revving up Mach Rider on the Wii U Virtual Console. Back on the handheld, there's also Mega Man Xtreme andPicross e4 to keep your reflexes and wits honed.
The full list of new releases is below the break as ever, but on the old releases side there are a few sales and reductions to keep an eye on. You may want to check out Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Splinter Cell Blacklist for $30 each; that's a week-long sale starting May 5 for the 3DS JRPG, and a permanent price reduction for the Wii U stealth game, also beginning May 5.

Japanese developer Spike Chunsoft is pursuing a North American release for its Nintendo 3DS adaptation of the popular manga series Attack on Titan, Siliconera reports.
According to an unnamed employee with the company, Spike Chunsoft currently seeks a partner company to publish the game stateside. Previously, Spike Chunsoft partnered with publisher Aksys to produce English localizations of the Nintendo DS adventure game Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors and its multiplatform sequel Virtue's Last Reward.
Spike Chunsoft's Attack on Titan game (titled Shingeki no Kyoujin: Jinrui Saigo no Tsubasa) launched in Japan in December, selling almost 100,000 copies in its debut week, according to Siliconera.

In depressing news for fans of gory fisticuffs and color-coded ninjas, Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has squashed the possibility that the first threeMortal Kombat games might appear on the Wii U virtual console. Boon wasasked about the chances of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Mortal Kombat 3 coming to the virtual console in their fan-favorite Super Nintendo incarnations. His response was concise: "0.0%."
While disappointing news, it should be pointed out that all three of these games have been re-released numerous times on various other platforms, making it very easy to find your Mortal Kombat fix elsewhere. Alternately, if you're just in it for the characters and fatalities, 2011's Mortal Kombat retells the story of the first three Mortal Kombat games with far superior fighting mechanics, online multiplayer and a surprising wealth of single-player content.

Retro-inspired platformer Shovel Knight was lurking underground after developer Yacht Club Games delayed it two months ago. However, the studio says it's done polishing the game to satisfaction, and it now has a final build that's it's hopefully ready to submit and perhaps imminently release. We've reached out to Yacht Club to find out when to expect the game on Wii U, 3DS, and Steam.
If you hadn't already guessed, Shovel Knight takes its inspiration from classic 2D platformers like Castlevania and Mega Man. The game even has its own roster of knightly bosses and themed stages, including the likes of Propeller Knight, Mole Knight and Tinker Knight. We're keeping our fingers crossed for the reveal of Saturday Knight Fever.

Mega Man fans voted and Capcom has planned accordingly - the schedule for the eShop's month-long marathon of portable Mega Man games has been revealed. Priority in the release order was granted according to the number of votes received from fans, with the most anticipated games arriving first.
Beyond the exception of next week's double dose of Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3, a new title will be released on the eShop each week in the month of May. If you're ready to see more of the Blue Bomber on your 3DS, Mega Man Xtreme already kicked the event off this week. Xtreme is priced at $4.99, with the incoming slew of numerical Mega Man entries expected to run for $3.99 each.

Format: SNES Publisher: Nintendo Developer: In-house Review: E26
There aren’t many games that it’s hard to imagine looking any better than they did in their original form. Especially of those released in 1995. But Yoshi’s Island, or to give it its complete name, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, still looks as cheerily pristine as the day it emerged, thick crayon lines, plump patchwork textures and all.Styled around appearing like a children’s picture book, Yoshi’s Island exhibits singularly cohesive art direction and a rare synergy with its host system, even if it required an extra chip in its cartridge, the Super FX2, to achieve it.It extends and builds upon the Super Nintendo’s sprite-manipulation capabilities with beautiful logic. Enemies squidge and bounce with almost tangible elasticity, popping with force when jumped on, tautly growing and flabbily shrinking, reacting to Yoshi’s actions with a materiality that prefigured the present-day impact of realtime physics.Though wonderfully engaging and pretty, these effects aren’t just window dressing, because Yoshi’s Island always ties them right into its mechanics. They’re an intrinsic part of the boss battles, in which Yoshi finds itself trapped in the glutinous depths of a frog’s belly, or running around a spinning moon after a raven. They’re also present as part of the standard levels – providing a revolving barrel for Yoshi to cross, a plank that falls from the wall, a balancing beam, a rolling rock. Each incarnation makes the world a little more engaging to play in, a little more substantial. For all that it’s rooted in childish imagination, Yoshi’s is one of the most authentic-feeling two-dimensional worlds videogames have created.

While they’re probably rare as hen’s teeth in the US, there have been a few major stores around the world that have started rolling out electronic shelf labels for every item in the store. These labels ensure every item on a shelf has the same price as what’s in the store’s computer, and they’re all controlled by an infrared transceiver hanging on the store’s ceiling. After studying one of these base stations, [furrtek] realized they’re wide open if you have the right equipment. The right equipment, it turns out, is a Game Boy Color.
The shelf labels in question are controlled by a base station with a decidedly non-standard carrier frequency and a proprietary protocol. IR driver chips found in phones are too slow to communicate with these labels, and old PDAs like Palm Pilots, Zauruses, and Pocket PCs only have an IrDA chip. There is one device that has an active development scene and an IR LED connected directly to a CPU pin, though, so [furrtek] started tinkering around with the hardware.
The Game Boy needed to be overclocked to get the right carrier frequency of 1.25 MHz. With a proof of concept already developed on a FPGA board, [furrtek] started coding for the Game Boy, developing an interface that allows him to change the ‘pages’ of these electronic labels, or display customized data on a particular label.
There’s also a much, much more facepalming implication of this build: these electronic labels’ firmware is able to be updated through IR. All [furrtek] needs is the development tools for the uC inside one of these labels.
There’s a great video [furrtek] put together going over this one. Check that out below.

Mario maker squashes unconfirmed reports of system unveiling at next month's convention
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Don't expect a new system announcement from Nintendo at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo. After rumors of new hardware from the company started making the rounds, Nintendo took the unusual step of shutting them down in no uncertain terms.
"I can confirm Nintendo is not revealing any hardware at this year's E3," a representative told VideoGamer.
Earlier yesterday, VideoGamer cited a third-party publisher source with the news that Nintendo would be using E3 to showcase new hardware. Separately, IGN co-founder Peer Schneider reported during a podcast appearance yesterday that Nintendo was "absolutely going to show new hardware," saying he had heard as much from multiple sources, including a former Nintendo employee and a third-party source.
In light of the Wii U's struggles, some industry-watchers have been calling for Nintendo to make drastic moves. In January, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter saidNintendo should ditch the Wii U entirely and publish for rival platforms until it was ready to launch a new console.
"We don't think Nintendo should exit the console hardware business, but think it should consider getting out of the Wii U business, and consider going back to the drawing board on consoles," Pachter said. "Nintendo has a console in the marketplace that isn't working, and if it continues to tilt at windmills, its software sales will suffer."

Mutant Mudds and Dementium developer Renegade Kid attempted to break into the console market with its proposed first-person horror game Cult County, but the Kickstarter campaign for that project failed to meet even a tenth of its $580K goal. Instead, the studio has changed course and its founder, Jools Watsham, has announced on Twitter that the team will be "developing a new experimental 2D game for 3DS."Treasurenauts.
"It has pixels and stuff. No cults," he added. Watsham further noted in the reply thread that it will be self-funded, "short and sweet", and that the developer "just needed something else to have fun with." He also confirmed that it won't have a Kickstarter. This doesn't discount the possibility of Cult County still happening though. "We're still pursuing other avenues for CC. Haven't give up," Watsham explained. When asked if it would be a 3DS offering - as it was originally proposed - he replied, "We're going to wait and see how Moon Chronicles does on 3DS before committing to another FPS for 3DS."Renegade Kid seems pretty busy these days as it's also working on Mutant Mudds 2, the 3DS 2D action game Treasurenauts, and Moon Chronicles, the 3DS episodic remake of its 2009 DS FPS Moon.

How good would N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time look if it was made using Unreal Engine 4?The Temple of Time on N64.
Your answer lies below, thanks to designer Michael Eurek, who has built of the game's iconic Temple of Time location (thanks, Kotaku). It's the location from where you pluck the Master Sword, and can then revisit in GameCube/Wii title Twilight Princess. After six months of work in Maya, Z-brush and Photoshop, Eurek rendered the area in Unreal Engine 4 and recorded a stunning walkthrough. Will the upcoming Wii U Zelda - likely to be shown off at E3 next month - look anything like this?

Analogue Interactive's latest uses aluminum casing, original NES parts for retro connoisseurs
It's clear there's a market for retro game experiences, but to date, most of the efforts to mine that market have been budget priced. Analogue Interactive is betting there's a market for higher-end retro offerings with a premium price, as the company has opened up preorders for the Analogue NT, a version of the classic Nintendo Entertainment System that starts at $500.
The heart of the Analogue NT is the same as Nintendo's original system, as each one is built using actual chips salvaged from cosmetically damaged Famicom (the Japanese release of the NES) systems. Using the original hardware was deemed necessary to sidestep emulation issues that affect NES clones already on the market.
While the system's innards are old, the exterior is a brand new aluminum casing featuring four controller ports, as well as original Famicom expansion ports to ensure compatibility with all peripherals, including the Famicom 3D System and Disk System. The Analogue NT also allows RGB, component, S-Video, or composite video output, and Analogue sells an HDMI adapter for $49 that will upscale from RGB to 1080p or 720p for modern displays, complete with scanlines.
The HDMI adapter isn't the only add-on not covered by the Analogue NT's $500 basic price. Customers can select from a handful of color casings for an extra $49, and Analogue is also selling original, unused NES controllers for $49. For the luxury retro aficionado on a budget, refurbished NES and Famicom controllers are available for $29 each. Preordered systems are expected to ship this summer.
This isn't the first high-end retro endeavor from Analogue Interactive. The company also made a $650 Neo Geo system dubbed the CMVS, built using an original Neo Geo arcade motherboard with a wood case. Matching arcade sticks were also available for $200 each.

Nintendo responded to an outpouring of fan requests for LGBT representation in its upcoming Nintendo 3DS game Tomodachi Life, denying the possibility of same-sex relationships among the game's Mii denizens.
The upcoming Tomodachi Life features Mii characters based on a player's real-world acquaintances, pairing them up in an ongoing series of unlikely situations. Though Tomodachi Life allows male characters to go on dates and marry female characters, the game does not grant the same opportunities for same-sex couples.
"Nintendo never intended to make any form of social commentary with the launch of Tomodachi Life," a Nintendo of America representative said in a statement to the Associated Press. "The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all of our fans will see that Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."
Though North American players will never see same-sex relationships within the world of Tomodachi Life, the Japanese version of the game shipped with a glitch last year that allowed same-sex coupling among male characters. The bug has since been patched out and removed from subsequent retail releases.
Tomodachi Life will launch in North America next month.
[Update: Nintendo's Bill Trinen clarified the glitch present in last year's Japanese release, explaining that supposed same-sex relationships were the result of user manipulation of character data. "Essentially [players] would create a male version of a Mii character and assign their gender as female, and that was how the two males were able to have a baby," he said.]

Nintendo isn't in peak condition. The 3DS recovered from its debut slump back in 2011, but the Wii U hasn't found a sizeable audience. As the House of Mario announced on Wednesday, it's sold just over 6 million Wii Us since the console hit in November 2012, significantly less than the PlayStation 4 managed to sell in just five months. Even with Super Smash Bros Wii U and Mario Kart 8 on the way, Nintendo only expects to sell 3.6 million Wii Us by the end of fiscal year 2015.
Maybe that's not such a bad thing.
Market defining sales of the Nintendo DS and Wii as well as the popularity of mascots like Mario may have skewed the world's expectations of Nintendo. Not just in terms of the scale its business, but as a creative force. Machines remembered as mighty hosts for genius games like the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube sold roughly 33 million and 22 million consoles apiece over their entire lifetimes, just a fraction of the 101 million-selling Wii. Both had scant few third party exclusives, but they did have an arsenal of spectacular Nintendo-made games, games far weirder and arguably more lovable than the bland exclusives like Wii Party and Wii Fit that fueled Wii's ascendance. Working on a smaller scale and as an underdog, Nintendo gave us Animal Crossing, Wind Waker, Super Smash Bros, Doshin the Giant, and many more.
Maybe, just maybe, Nintendo is at its best when it's not in peak condition, when it's smaller. Little Mac rather than Mike Tyson, if you will.

Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire will arrive on 3DS and 2DS in November, Nintendo announced today. The games are "fresh takes" onPokemon Ruby and Sapphire, which originally launched in 2003 for Game Boy Advance.
Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire were set in the Hoenn region within the series, and featured the monsters Groudon and Kyogre. The box art for the new games, as seen in the announcement trailer, shows off stylized versions of both Pokemon, which may indicate the inclusion of the Mega Evolutions system introduced in Pokemon X and Y.

Nintendo fell slightly short of the reduced financial projections it set in January, with the Wii U reaching 2.72 million shipments for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. However, the system remains way off Nintendo's initial projection of 9 million, so it's no surprise to see more conservative estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2015 of 3.6 million units. That's 60 percent less than Nintendo originally projected for the previous year.
Total Wii U shipments are now up to 6.17 million, nearly a year and a half after the console launched. On the software side, Nintendo revealed figures of 32.28 million units to date, with New Super Mario Bros. U (4.16 million), Nintendo Land (3.09 million) and Super Mario 3D World (2.17 million) leading the way.

Nintendo has published a video showing off the Wii U's upcoming quick start menu feature, which is due to be added in a future system update. The option will slash the time taken to boot the console and load a piece of software by presenting you with a list of recently-used apps and games. From this menu you can then pick the option you want and select it directly, skipping the console's home screen."The integration of this feature is almost complete, and this is how it will actually work on the Wii U system," Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata revealed during last night's investor presentation. "We will deliver this update to Wii U owners when we update the Wii U hardware either before or during summer."A separate report has indicated that the Wii U's regular system boot procedure will also see a speed up. Industry analyst David Gibson (present at the investor Q&A following the presentation) relayed the news via Twitter that the console would soon load "20 seconds" faster.

Mario Kart 8's companion service Mario Kart TV will also be available for PC and smartphones, Nintendo has announced. As previously detailed, you'll be able to edit, upload and view Mario Kart 8 gameplay footage (and publish videos to YouTube) from the game itself.Mario Kart TV for smartphones.
But this content will also be made available for anyone to browse, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has said, via an online version of the service. Those playing the game can sign in with their Nintendo Network ID to see rankings, stats and videos that friends have shared.Nintendo has spoken before about how it sees smartphones as a way to extend the reach of its core games - without expanding to publish actual games on mobiles."The smartphone market is probably more competitive than the console business," Iwata told Bloomberg. "We have had a console business for 30 years, and I don't think we can just transfer that over onto a smartphone model."Games such as Mario and Zelda are designed for our game machines so if we transfer them into smartphones as they are, customers won't be satisfied," he continued. "If customers aren't satisfied with the experience, it will decrease the value of our content."While Nintendo isn't looking to mobile game development anytime soon, the company is pondering how it will expand its business into emerging markets.Iwata has said its focus here will be to develop unique hardware for these new territories, rather than re-releasing existing consoles available elsewhere and hoping they'll still sell."We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have," he said. "The product and price balance must be made from scratch.""It would be difficult to enter those markets if we didn't create something new," he added toReuters. "For the mass market you need to provide something that most of the middle class can afford."This specially-designed hardware could debut as early as next year, Iwata concluded.

Nintendo reportedly plans to launch new console platforms in emerging markets beginning next year.
President Satoru Iwata told Bloomberg: "We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have. The product and price balance must be made from scratch."
Microsoft recently announced plans to launch Xbox One in China this September after the country lifted a 14-year ban on the sale of foreign game consoles. Meanwhile, the Sony Computer Entertainment Japan Asia division has opened a newChina Strategy Department.
While Iwata reiterated Nintendo's reluctance to enter the smartphone market on Thursday, he did announce a new near field communication product line called Nintendo Figurine Platform, which is designed to address weaker than expected Wii U and 3DS sales.
"We need to start a new business that will someday become one of our core activities," he said. "What is especially unique about NFP is that it is not classed as an accessory product of a certain software title but as a platform itself."
Nintendo will announce a number of NFP compatible games at E3 in June, and plans to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality beginning this Christmas season. NFP will be compatible with Wii U software from the end of 2014, and with 3DS software from next year.

Nintendo came close to surpassing $250 million sales in downloadable games and content in the past twelve months.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told investors that a possible fourth consecutive annual loss would be unacceptableDuring the financial period between April 2013 and March 2014, the platform holder made about 24 billion Yen ($235 million) from digital content.
Chief executive Satoru Iwata said this was due to a high proportion of customers accessing internet services through their 3DS and Wii U systems.
In an investor meeting on Thursday, in which Iwata apologised for Nintendo's third consecutive net loss (this time to the tune of $229 million), the executive explained how the digital side of the business was punching above its weight.
The graph below was presented to investors, showing a significant uptake in digital sales cross the past three years.
"This graph shows the transitions of download sales until the last fiscal year. As shown here, download sales had slowed down three-to-four years ago, but they have tripled in the last two years," Iwata explained.
He added that allowing people to download major packaged games was also a contributing factor to the upsurge in digital cash.
Iwata believes that the digital sales, considering Wii U is performing well below expectations, suggests future opportunities will be significant.
"When we consider that we have made this progress while Nintendo's overall business has not generally been expanding, I think further developing this business will be imperative for us to adapt to the changes in the business environment," he said.
Nintendo expects to sell less than 4 million Wii U consoles over the current financial year.
The Kyoto based corporation believes that 20 million Wii U games will be sold this year, a slight increase on the 19 million achieved in the prior financial term.
In terms of 3DS sales, Nintendo expects 12 million units to be sold worldwide this financial year. That would virtually match its 2013/14 financial year sales, in which the platform became a best-seller in numerous territories for an extended period, although it still failed to meet internal expectations.

Nintendo has no problem with its Mii-based Tomodachi Life being off-kilter, but when it comes to the handheld game's same-sex avatars being able to wed, well, that's a different story. Tomodachi Life is all about the interactions and relationships between an island full of Miis, and as two characters' dating progresses they'll eventually walk down the aisle, unlock a bigger home and have children -- so long as one is, say, Mario and the other is Princess Peach. A fan, urging the internet to use the "#Miiquality" hashtag across social media when requesting that the company change its stance. Nintendo's response? It told the Associated Press that it "never intended to make any form of social commentary" with the 3DS game's launch."The relationship options in the game represent a playful alternate world rather than a real-life simulation. We hope that all of our fans will see that 'Tomodachi Life' was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game, and that we were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary."

We hope you liked Skylanders, because Nintendo is apparently setting up its own range of toys to accidentally tread under foot. At the company's financial briefing this morning, it outlined a Mario figure that could be used across multiple titles, somehow tying into game saves too. It's not the first for Nintendo's console: Pokemon Scramble connected NFC toys to the Wii U last year. Interestingly, Nintendo had apparently declined exclusivity on Activision's lucrative Skylanders series.
These physical characters and games, grouped together as NFP (which apparently stands for both NFC Featured Platform and Nintendo Figurine Platform), will debut at this year's E3, alongside a new IR reader for 3DSes that will make the toys compatible across both the handheld and the Wii. With 3DS sales currently totaling 43 million, and the Wii U struggling to top six million, it's probably a wise business decision.

[Andrew] is developing a game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Emulators are great for this, but [Andy] loves running on the real iron. To help, he’s created a dual port RAM interface for his NES. As the name implies, a dual port RAM is a memory with two separate data and address buses. The Cypress Semiconductor CY7C136 [Andy] used also includes arbitration logic to ensure that both ports don’t attempt to access the same memory cell and cause data corruption. In [Andy's] case the NES was on one side, oblivious to the new hardware. On the other side of the dual port RAM, [Andy] installed an ATmega164 running his own custom firmware.
The new hardware gives [Andy] a live view of what’s going on in the NES’s memory. He added a live memory view/edit screen similar to the FCEUX emulator. The window runs on a PC while the game itself is running on an NES. [Andy] was even able to add rudimentary break and step features by connecting his circuit to the Non Maskable Interrupt (NMI) line of the NES. By holding the NMI asserted, the ATmega can essentially freeze the game in progress.
[Andy] has even used his circuit to teach the NES some new tricks. By reading the timer and score memory locations on Ice Hockey, he was able to create a scoreboard and goal light. Similar techniques were used to give Contra a muzzle flash light which puts Ambilightsystems to shame.
We don’t know what [Andy] is planning next, but we hope it’s a source release so we can start hacking some some games ourselves!

Nintendo's surprise reveal of Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Pokemon Omega Ruby was a bit vague to say the least. The company described the 3DS games as a "fresh take" on Game Boy Advance entries Pokemon Ruby and Pokemon Sapphire, while a brief press release mentioned things like a "new adventure" and a "spectacular new world."
So, just what are these games? Step in Satoru Iwata to clear things up, or at least a little bit. In today's financial briefing, the Nintendo president described the games as "full remakes," which at least removes some of the confusion if not a lot of it.
Otherwise, details are as sparse as they were yesterday. At least we do know Nintendo's releasing both games worldwide in November this year.

Sonic: Lost World sales dried up in 2014; as of March 31, the Wii U and 3DS game shipped 710,000 units total since its launch in October 2013. The figures come from Sega Sammy's fiscal year report, and the company doesn't note if they include download sales or not.
Total War: Rome 2 was the company's best-performing game in the fiscal year, shifting 1.13 million copies by the end of March 2014. Football Manager 2014placed second at 790,000 units, with Company of Heroes 2 not too far behind with 680,000 shipments. In roughly its first month on sale in Japan, PS4 and PS3 entry Yakuza Restoration shipped 390,000 units.
Sega Sammy's consumer business posted year-on-year decline for packaged software, with the company blaming low sales on the "harsh market environment." The division shipped 8.73 million packaged games across April 2013 to March 2014, down 18 percent from the previous fiscal year. Sega Sammy expects that figure to rise substantially to 12.78 million for the fiscal year ending March 2015.

The game's official Twitter account transmittedthe release date's signal this week, reminding us that the first portion of the 3D-enabled Moon Chronicles will cost $8.99.
If the initial chapter's price is a bit steep to you, know that three additional DLC chapters will be offered for $1.99 apiece. Each episode carries four chapters of the original game, with the base $8.99 offering also including six VR missions. If the incoming content is received well enough, Renegade Kid has plans to offer a second season's worth sometime next year, with all-new content taking place after the original game's story.

Tomodachi Life, an upcoming 3DS game that places the Miis of a player and their acquaintances in various scenarios, has drawn criticism from fans over its lack of support for same-sex relationships. Nintendo of America recentlyexplained that the company "never intended to make any form of social commentary" with Tomodachi Life, but the bungling response only upset people further. With fans amassing awareness for the issue through theMiiquality hashtag, Nintendo has now issued an apology for "disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships."
"Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game's design, and such a significant development change can't be accomplished with a post-ship patch," the statement continues. "We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."
It's nice of Nintendo of America to play damage control, but since the response is from the company's American division, we wonder if the strive to be more inclusive would only be evident in Western versions of the next game. Of course, that's assuming that another Tomodachi game will be made in the first place.

One of the best things about Super Mario 3D World is its soundtrack.
What's that? You don't believe me? Why, you insolent sod, have a listen to this and tell me it isn't like something straight out of classic Disney films.
That's what I thought. Now, what would you say if I told you that it was possible to get this track, as well as a further 76 tracks of similar orchestral goodness, all on two compact discs?
No, my friend, this isn't sorcery, it's... well, it's just a soundtrack CD. Chill out.
The point is, Super Mario 3D World has a brilliant musical score, and now you can get your hands on a two-disc CD version of it through the UK Club Nintendo store.
The only problem is that it'll set you back 3000 Stars, which means you'll have had to have registered a ton of Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U games by now to be able to 'afford' it.
For most people, then, your best bet will be to keep an eye on eBay in case some cheeky beggar's bought it with their stars with the sole purpose of selling it on for some nifty dollar dollar.
By God though, it'd be worth it. Even the cover's amazing:

Nintendo of America has released a TV commercial for its upcoming 3DS game Tomodachi Life.
The life sim will be released in Europe and the US on June 6. In it, players become guardians of their Mii characters, ensuring they've got enough friends, food and clothing, and that they're satisfied.
As in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, players can also take screenshots of what their Miis gets up to and share them online.
Over the weekend, Nintendo issued an official apology following the uproar over the lack of a same-sex marriage option in Tomodachi Life.
Tomodachi Life is the first game in the series to be released in western territories. The 2009 DS original sold 3.76 million copies in Japan and its April 2013 3DS sequel has moved 1.82 million copies to date.

Square Enix said on Monday that it is considering releasingDragon Quest X outside of Japan.
The subscription-based MMO launched in Japan on Wii in August 2012, on Wii U in March 2013, on PC last September, and on smartphones via cloud streaming in December.
The game has sold over one million copies and has around 300,000 daily active players in Japan, producer Yosuke Saito said last month.
Outlining growth plans in its annual financial report on Monday, Square Enix also said that it is planning the launch of unspecified "large-scale online titles developed by western studios" beginning during the current business year ending in March 2015.
Final Fantasy Agito will be released "soon" on iOS and Android devices, while Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn will launch in mainland China this summer.
As previously forecast, Square Enix announced on Monday that it had posted net sales of 155 billion yen (£901.5m/$1.52b) and net income of 6.6 billion yen (£38.4m/$64.8m) for the business year ended March 31 2014.
The Japanese publisher raised its sales and profit guidance in early May, citing "strong" sales of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, an "encouraging start" for mobile game Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light, and "favourable sales" of both Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD and Tomb Raider Definitive Edition.
Square Enix sold 17.23 million games in the most recent financial year: 8.2 million in North America, 4.6 million in Japan and 4.08 million in Europe. It expects to sell 12 million games in the current business year, with a more even spread across the three key territories.
The company has also forecast annual net sales of 140-150 billion yen (£814m - £871m / $1.37b - $1.47b) and net income of 3.5-6.5 billion yen (£20.3m - £37.7m / $34.3m - $63.8m).

When Nintendo designed Tomodachi Life, a bizarre life-sim that puts the company's Mii avatars in an exaggerated parody of reality, it probably didn't expect to provoke a marriage equality campaign. Community cries for 'Miiquality' petitioned Nintendo to add same-sex relationships to the title, but the company's initial response was sterile and dismissive. "Tomodachi Life was intended to be a whimsical and quirky game," Nintendo said. "We were absolutely not trying to provide social commentary." Intentional or not, the lack of same-sex relationships caused a stir. Now, Nintendo is apologizing officially.

Nintendo UK's online store is spreading its P-wings by introducing merchandise to its virtual shelves. The new line of products include clothes, figurines, console accessories and game guides, and includes items previously limited to outside of Europe.
There's some fun stuff in there, including piranha plant socks, a stylish Zelda hoodie, and our favorite, the goomba cap. The prices are fairly standard for official merchandise, but if you've got pounds in your pocket, you might be interested in the exclusive figurines. So far it's limited to Zelda and Metroid, and for £300 you can take Ganondorf home for tea.

This year’s release of Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros will sell Wii U hardware and help the machine hit its 3.6m unit sales target.
That’s according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who has told investors that the two titles are “the pillars of our entire marketing strategy for this year” and that “they will encourage those who do not own Wii U hardware to purchase it”.
That’s despite the fact that the critically applauded Super Mario 3D World was unable to create any significant sales uplift for the console.
Added Iwata: “As to whether our philosophy has changed or not, the basic idea that consumers reluctantly purchase hardware only because they want to play with appealing software remains unchanged.”
Iwata also confirmed that there aren’t currently enough Wii U units in the channel to meet its sales goals, but the ongoing losses the company incurs during manufacturing have already been factored in to the company’s partners.
“In order to sell 3.6m units, we have to produce some more hardware units on top of our current hardware inventory,” he added.
“However, since the loss arising due to the hardware production costs being higher than our trade price was taken into account in the previous fiscal year, you could assume that there will be almost no loss this fiscal year for the sales of the 3.6m hardware units.”
There will also be some more games announced for the console at E3.
“We are going to talk about other Wii U titles at E3 in Los Angeles in June,” he added. “Also, our internal software development teams directed by Shigeru Miyamoto are committed to developing several titles that focus on offering unique experiences only made possible with the Wii U GamePad in order for a large number of people to understand the Wii U GamePad’s significance.
“The titles we are preparing to show you at E3 vary from being nearly complete to still in the early phases of development but with the core of its appeal noticeable. Therefore, our strategy of focusing on software has not changed.”

Satoru Iwata has confirmed to investor that the company already knows what it has planned for its follow-up to the struggling Wii U.
“We are preparing for our next hardware system,” the Nintendo president told investors. “In fact, we already have a clear idea to some extent about the direction our next hardware is going to take.
“Once we launch a new platform, we naturally start to prepare for the next one. As it takes several years to develop a single platform, if you ask us whether we are preparing for our next system, then the correct response will be that we are always developing new hardware.
“On the other hand, the most difficult question for us to answer in public in concrete terms is when we are going to launch our new hardware and what kind of hardware we are going to launch, and I am afraid that I cannot talk about this in more detail.”
There were words of reassurance for existing Wii U owners, however.
“We will continue to work hard to ensure that consumers who already own our platforms are satisfied, and make sure that people will continue to see great value in our software,” he added.
“I can certainly assure you that we are not at a dead end of any kind in which we are out of ideas for developing new hardware. I of course believe that launching new hardware will not produce good results unless we first make sure that those who have already purchased our platforms are satisfied.”

Company expecting Quality of Life initiative to launch next year, Wii U's best days still ahead of it
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
With the Wii U posting year-over-year declines in unit sales for its first full year on shelves, Nintendo investors had a lot of questions about new hardware in their post-earnings Q&A with company president Satoru Iwata. In an English translation of the eventnewly released by Nintendo, Iwata addressed both the company's nebulously defined Quality of Life initiative, as well as its eventual successor to the Wii U.
When asked about the company's priorities in the mid-term, Iwata mentioned the new Quality of Life platform, saying he would be ready to talk about it more specifically this year, with the actual deployment of the idea happening sometime in the company's next fiscal year, which runs from April of 2015 through March of 2016. Iwata also teased another new rollout from the company slightly further out on the calendar.
"[T]he idea I mentioned about redefining the definition of video game platforms will also require approximately two years," Iwata said. "This is how we would like to talk more about our mid-term measures and lead them to actual results. However, we will not be able to create a good environment for the company unless projects are undertaken simultaneously, so this is the kind of timeframe that we have in mind."
Iwata also sought to alleviate concerns about the Wii U's eventual successor, saying Nintendo already had a rough idea of where it would be going with the system. However, it's in no rush to get there because it still needs to do right by existing Wii U owners.
"I can certainly assure you that we are not at a dead end of any kind in which we are out of ideas for developing new hardware," Iwata said. "I of course believe that launching new hardware will not produce good results unless we first make sure that those who have already purchased our platforms are satisfied. We will continue to work hard to ensure that consumers who already own our platforms are satisfied, and make sure that people will continue to see great value in our software, but I would like to say that we are preparing for our next hardware system, and in fact, we already have a clear idea to some extent about the direction our next hardware is going to take."
That isn't to say Nintendo has given up on the Wii U and is just trying to hit some minimum threshold of satisfaction, either. When asked about Nintendo's Wii U sales forecast for the coming year, a modest 3.6 million systems, Iwata said that isn't expected to represent peak sales, and there is still hope for the system to far surpass that number.
"The fate of a video game system is often influenced greatly by the introduction of a single title," Iwata said. "As many of you probably remember, before the release of the Pokémon game, Game Boy had been showing slow growth, and many people wondered whether it was the end of Game Boy. But the Pokémon game singlehandedly changed the landscape of the system, which then started to show the strongest sales in the lifecycle of the system."

Nintendo has released 3DS system update 7.2.0-17 in Europe and North America.
The company says the update introduces the new parental controls feature detailed below, while improving system stability.
[h=3]New Parental Controls feature[/h] - You can now register an email address to which a master key can be sent. If you forget your PIN and the answer to your secret question at a later point, a master key to reset your PIN can be sent to the email address you have registered. Please make sure to use an email address that only parents or guardians can access, to prevent children from seeing the master key that is sent.
[h=3]System stability improvements and other adjustments[/h] - Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user's experience.
Last week Nintendo reported a net loss for the financial year ended in March 2014 following weaker than expected Wii U and 3DS sales.
Shortly after, it announced a new near field communication platform for Wii U and 3DS called Nintendo Figurine Platform.
Nintendo will reveal a number of NFP compatible games at E3 in June, and plans to release character figurines with built-in NFC functionality beginning this Christmas season. NFP will be compatible with Wii U software from the end of 2014, and with 3DS titles from next year.
The platform holder also hopes to boost 3DS sales with the release ofnewly announced Pokémon Ruby & Sapphire remakes, which will launch worldwide in November 2014.

Nintendo of America has released Mario Kart 8 commercials showing off the new Boomerang and Super Horn power-ups.
As noted in our recent Mario Kart 8 preview, the former serves as an interesting alternative to the green shell, offering players three chances to hit enemies.
Meanwhile, the Super Horn offers players the chance to destroy the infuriating Blue Shell, which now slides along the ground, taking out numerous enemies before rising into the air and slamming down on its first-placed target.

Nintendo turned on the nitros with the new Wii U bundle for Mario Kart 8, not forgetting how every copy of the racer bundles in a code for a free game. Good thing, then, MK8 itself is a 4.5 stars winner according to Joystiq's Thomas Schulenberg. From his review:
"Despite an unfortunate change to its battle mode, MK8 is a solid extra lap on a series with a great foundation. The gravity-shifting sections spliced into existing and new tracks feel like a natural extension of the series rather than a gameplay-changing revelation, but it's a strong complement to an already enjoyable experience. The social features are surprisingly solid and may even outlive the total course selection, but it helps that the new tracks feel as worthy of a revisit as the series' standouts."

The Pokemon Company officially unveiled The Thieves and the 1,000 Pokemonfor Japan, a 3DS eShop game that intertwines the series' critter-capturing with the system's StreetPass functionality. Players find and collect sticker-like versions of Pokemon using StreetPass, and then use their army of pocket monsters to take down thieves and retrieve their stolen loot.
The game will be available for free in Japan between June 5 and September 30 - there's no word on whether or not it includes any in-app purchases. As for a Western release, while Pokemon games tend to make their way overseas, this one may take a while.
The Thieves and the 1,000 Pokemon features characters and promotions tied to the new film, Pokemon the Movie: Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. The film hits Japan on July 19, and while it's likely to receive a Western release, going by previous films it'll take a few months at least. So if the game is going to get a Western release, it seems likely it won't be at the same time as Japan.

Electronics firm Philips has asked the Delaware courts to force Nintendo to stop selling Wii U in the US.
The demand is part of a lawsuit, as reported by Game Informer, in which Philips is claiming that Nintendo’s console and some of its accessories have infringed two of its motion control patents.
Specifically, it draws issue with tech that “models a user’s body in a virtual environment by animating a virtual body to follow the physical movements of the user” arguing that it infringes on its “Virtual Body Control Device” and “User Interface System Based on Pointing Device” patents.
This tech can apparently be found in the Wii U, Wii U Gamepad, Wii and Wii Remote.
It also claims that Nintendo was made aware of the infringement as early as December 2011 and demands that an injunction is placed on the further importing and sale of all affected devices until the issue is resolved.

May 15th, 2014, 23:50 Posted By: wraggster
There seems to have been two main reactions to Nintendo’s recent annual loss of $456m. The most prominent is that these huge losses suggest Nintendo’s time is up.
‘Nintendo is over,’ was what one prominent business journalist said on Twitter.
It’s not true. For all its financial miscalculations, Nintendo’s main software brands remain robust. Pokémon X and Y sold 12.26m units alone, making it one of the best-selling boxed products of the year across all platforms, while the Mario franchise sold around 15m games over the last financial year. These numbers alone point to a company that remains popular despite the failure of its latest console.
The other reaction is just as inaccurate: the idea that Nintendo has such deep pockets that it can afford to make these financial losses. No company can afford to report numbers like this, and if it carries on in this way it will run out of its cash reserves within the next five to ten years.
The suggestions on how Nintendo can turn around its business have been numerous, and we’re not about to make any here. Yes, launching a new blockbuster IP or console are probably the best options, but Nintendo’s problems are immediate and you cannot comfortably turn around a new killer product in the modern games industry in 12 months.
The same applies to cutting the price of Wii U. Retailers told MCV last week that Wii U’s price is simply too high, and it’s hard to disagree. But cutting the price is not a certain fix, and with the company hemorrhaging money it would take a brave CEO to take such action. Nintendo’s immediate problem is short-term: How does it turn its current losses into a profit using the tools and hardware it has already developed?
For all its financial miscalculations, Nintendo’s
main software brands remain robust. Pokémon
X and Y sold 12.26m units alone, making it one
of the best-selling boxed products of the year
across all platforms, while the Mario franchise
sold around 15m games over the last financial
year. These numbers alone point to a company
that remains popular despite the failure of its
latest console. The platform holder has talked about ramping up the licensing of its big brands and pushing into emerging markets. And we can expect a few more small games, re-releases and remakes to hit the market too. GBA and DS games are being ported to Wii U, and the firm has announced a new Pokémon remake to launch this Q4 on 3DS.
Yet the biggest bet Nintendo appears to be making is by following Skylanders and Disney Infinity into the toys-to-life genre.
The NFC Featured Platform or Nintendo Figurine Platform (NFP) is for both Wii U and 3DS. The latter will require its own piece of hardware, and Nintendo is developing toys and multiple games.
“What is especially unique about NFP is that it is not classed as an accessory product of a certain software title but as a platform itself,” Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said in a briefing. “The figurines are going to work with multiple software titles to be released in the future, and we are aiming to develop more software compatible with the figurines.
“Nintendo has a lot of well-known character IP that has originated in video games. This is why I believe a brand-new type of platform will be born when the character IP becomes compatible with NFP. At E3, we will announce which titles are compatible with NFP, display NFP products and disclose specific information about NFP, which will be launched during this year-end sales season.”

Fast food giant McDonalds says its latest Happy Meal campaign is using Super Mario to help kids keep fit.
Video games and fast food have long been in the crosshairs of health experts crediting both with the rapidly increasing level of obesity amongst UK children.
But McDonalds told MCV it opted to team up with Nintendo and Mario in an attempt to actually tackle the issue and promote wellbeing.
“The Run, Jump and Power-Up with Super Mario promotion inspired children to get active using some of Mario’s moves,” a McDonalds spokesperson told MCV.
“We teamed up with Nintendo UK to encourage children to get active with a Happy Meal promotion featuring some of its most famous characters. Kids were encouraged to run, jump and complete active tasks set out by Mario and friends both on the Happy Meal box itself and with free in-store activities.”
McDonald Happy Meals have become a popular promotion point for kids games firms in recent months. In the US, Skylanders and Pokémon toys and artwork have featured in the packs.
“Each of our Happy Meal promotions is different, but importantly each aims to encourage balanced food choice, promote well-being or have educational messages.”

[Anton] recently acquired a broken Nintendo 3DS. When the power button was pressed, the device would start booting up only to shut back down after flashing a blue light and making a popping sound. It turns out this problem is pretty common with the 3DS.
[Anton] could have tossed this device into the landfill, but where’s the fun in that? Instead, he cracked the device open like any self-respecting hacker would. It didn’t take him long to discover two broken flex ribbon cables. [Anton] could have then searched for replacement cables, but his inner hacker told him he could repair this himself. He carefully scraped the insulation off of the broken traces and then soldered on some hair thin wires to bridge the gap.
All that was left to do was to glue the wires securely in place and feed them back through the hinges. This project is a great example of how a little determination and know-how can keep a useful device from the landfill. If you attempt this repair yourself, you may find this 3DS teardown to be a helpful reference. What devices have you been able to save from an untimely demise?

It's a steady week on the eShop ahead of this month's big kahuna - that's Mario Kart 8, by the way - but there are games that may pique your interest. Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails is an unusual shoot-em-up in that you move by scrolling along magnetic rails on the walls - oh, and you're shooting mechanized rats while trying to save all the world's cats. It's out for the Wii U this week, while Wii Party U gets a belated eShop release too.
Over on the handheld, there's the debut of Renegade Kid's enhanced episodic remake of Moon Chronicles (the first episode's priced $9 while the upcoming three chapters are $2 each). Also, Capcom's Mega May continues with Game Boy platformer Mega Man 4.
Don't forget Atlus is discounting the two Etrian Odyssey games on 3DS at $20 each, and that sale ends on Monday, May 19. On the same day, a new one starts for Code of Princess and Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor Overclocked, down to $15 each until June 5.

Nintendo understands gameplay – but you sometimes have to look outside the company’s R&D labs to find developers that understand Nintendo. HAL gave us Super Smash Bros’s unashamedly vibrant celebration of all things Nintendo. Intelligent Systems crafted the wryly self-referental Mario & Luigi twinset. And when Amusement Vision was tasked with updating Shigeru Miyamoto’s futuristic racing franchise for GameCube, the result was F-Zero GX: a game clearly made for fans, by fans.GX (and its little-seen arcade twin AX) is fiercely loyal to its older brothers. The craft, quaintly reminiscent of the low-poly pastel models born of a previous generation’s technology, handle just as they did on Super Nintendo and N64. For beginners, it’s a nightmare: taking corners too fast sees your craft dragged by its behind into a race-scuppering trackside smash. But with practice it’s possible to forge a tangible bond with your machine – steering in graceful arcs that keep just the right side of skidding catastrophically out of control, boosting out of corners, thundering past competitors with neck-tightening precision. It’s Scalextric at 1,200kph. No other racing game comes close to evoking such a breathtaking feeling of just barely keeping control of a vehicle that’s going far, far too fast. Tracks aren’t so much driven as dreamed, with brutal 180-degree turns, sudden two-lane splits and cruelly placed speed strips pouring into your eyes that bit faster than it’s possible to consciously process. Over someone’s shoulders, it’s an incredible thing to watch. In the pilot’s seat, it’s frightening.Having 29 rivals – all expert drivers, all focused on smashing you off-course in anything but the beginner’s Standard Mode – turns F-Zero GX into a thrillingly anarchic motorway war, a proper jostling battle for pole position rather than a four-way fight. Your competitors cheat with magic boosts in traditional F-Zero style, of course, but that’s the secret of the game’s pounding relentlessness. Where every second is a potential overtaking opportunity for your enemies, every race won is a victory for eyes and fingers. And each craft has a unique balance of speed versus acceleration versus barging strength – so no single machine is ever truly odds-on favourite. Our F-Zero GX review said the GameCube title was better than the Nintendo-developed versions.
The tracks are spectacular. N64’s F-Zero X had scenery restricted to the odd 2D statue to keep the framerate up on the struggling 64bit machine, and couldn’t help but look limp next to its perceived rival – the cooler-than-thou PlayStation offering, Wipeout. In GX, Amusement Vision tweaked its Super Monkey Ball engine to push GameCube harder even than Nintendo itself, and transform F-Zero’s abstract tarmac ribbons into real places. Now, Mute City is a city, all blazing bridges and ghostly glowing billboards. Port Town is a port – with, apropos of nothing, much-maligned NES accessory ROB the robot looming over the ships and hotels. Craft cling treacherously to tube-like tracks looping over lava; Casino Town’s psychedelic neon whips past at 1,500kph; towering ramps send the craft soaring over Aeropolis like a sychronised diving team.

Nintendo will shine the spotlight on a 'new game for 3DS' at E3 with its very own press event.
The platform holder has begun inviting press to two Q&A events to take place during E3. One will focus on the highly anticipate all-star brawler, Super Smash Bros., while the other will apparently spotlight "A new game for 3DS".
While the firm offers no further information on the game, one can at least safely assume the firm would not host an entire event for anything less than a major title for the handheld.
The platform has already been graced with new games in the firm's top franchises, such as Mario Kart, Zelda, Super Mario and numerous others.
Nintendo recently permanently cut the prices of five flagship 3DS games. Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D are now be available at retail and on the Nintendo eShop for $29.99 each, down from the usual $39.99 price.
US retailer Target is also currently selling Nintendo 2DS units for a mere $99 until Saturday, May 17.

People who like racing games and platforms , this is your homebrew. Bunny Run is a game very simple , which, although scheduled with DS Game Maker , has nothing to envy to a commercial game. In this game we will be a white rabbit that will have to run and jump to avoid obstacles and win the race to the tortoise . Bunny Run we also find various types of Pawer-Ups that depends on what will help us or hinder us to win the game; giving that "special touch" to this great homebrew.

It has taken a while to arrive, but finally we have the first 3DS emulator . The name of this emulator is Citra, and is written in C + + . It is quite a real breakthrough for the 3DS scene since quite facilitate homebrew development on this console . Furthermore, the possibility that the project remains unfinished is quite low, since the author has released the source code , licensed under GPLv2 , so we can modify the code to our liking, and collaborate on their development.

Would you like to have a sequencer? If yes this app can not miss on your Nintendo DS. CellDS is very similar to a sequencer application , but not possessing the characteristics of it, is a perfect substitute , can program and play music events sequentially. This new application is based on Grid, sequencers and has 6 to 1, each secunciador is controlled by a fully customizable script. Note that these are LUA's script.

Today I come to present a game inspired some super mario galaxy, the game takes place in platforms that are in space, in the game we will get to catch a group of coins will be distributed for each level, if we want to advance level need to take all the coins you have in the level and when we try to catch the coins have to be dodging a species of cactus that if they do not touch us iran removing life to death and having to restart the game or level depends if we get to kill or not. A fun hopefully take out more levels.

Mednafen a multi-system emulator has been updated.
Quote:
Highlights of this release include:
- Added setting "video.deinterlacer" to select which simple deinterlacer to use. Note that currently, all deinterlacers will result in double-height video internally(compared to non-interlaced modes), even when it´s not strictly necessary(such as with "bob" and "bob_offset"), due to internal design decisions.
- Allow for negative ".scanlines" setting values, which when used with the "weave" deinterlacer(the default), will structure the scanlines to mask the previous field´s lines.
- Added support for mapping joystick axes to lightgun screen coordinates(refer to full ChangeLog, April 28, for more details).
- Updated internal copy of libmpcdec; fixes Musepack SV7 file reading/playback(with CD emulation).
- New shared-mode WASAPI sound driver available(but not the default) for Windows Vista and newer, named "wasapish"(can be selected via the "sound.driver" setting).
- GB: Added support for custom palettes that specify BGP, OBP0, and OBP1 colors independently.
- GB: Fixed MBC7 support(tilt sensor is on virtual port 2).
- GB: Disabled broken simulation of HDMA overhead.
- GB: Fixed some problems in the memory-mapper code that allowed some games(like "Best of the Best Championship Karate") to crash Mednafen itself.
- PC-FX, VB: New FPU emulation code to replace SoftFloat(due to licensing concerns); game compatibility shouldn´t be affected.
- PS1: Added settings to allow for scaling(and clamping) the analog stick axis values to work around issues caused by the range differences between PS1 analog sticks and modern PC gamepad analog sticks.
New settings:
- video.deinterlacer
- psx.input.port*.analogjoy.axis_scale
- psx.input.port*.dualanalog.axis_scale
- psx.input.port*.dualshock.axis_scale
Settings with changed semantics and/or default values:
- sound.buffer_time
- <system>.scanlines
0.9.34.1:
- Fixed a bug in the sound format conversion code that caused garbled audio when using the new shared-mode WASAPI driver with a sound device configured with more than 2 speakers.
0.9.34:
- CDPLAY: Optimized the visualization code.
- Added a new shared-mode WASAPI sound driver named "wasapish".
- For consistency, the "wasapi" and "sdl" sound drivers no longer subtract the overhead latency from the desired buffer size when calculating the size of the buffer to use.
- Changed the default value of setting "sound.buffer_time" to "0", to enable usage of partially-new code that calculates a buffer size automatically based on emulated system characteristics and the sound driver in use.
- GB: Fixed tilt sensor emulation that was broken in the May 6 IDIT_BUTTON_ANALOG packing change.
- Updated the embedded copy of libmpcdec to the latest SVN copy; fixes problems with playback of older SV7 format files(with the CD emulation code).
- Wrote threading code to target Win32 APIs directly, rather than rely on SDL´s threading support, for the Windows build.
- GBA, NES: Resolved some compiler warnings.
- No longer compile with -mstackrealign for the Windows build, instead using "__attribute__((force_align_arg_pointer))" where appropriate(e.g. Win32 and SDL callbacks).
- Updated the cheat console-interface code to use a condition variable instead of sleep-waiting.
- Remove an erroneous extra mutex unlock around a driver-side message queue.
- Pack "IDIT_BUTTON_ANALOG" and "IDIT_RUMBLE" type input device data more tightly(only aligning to a byte-boundary now, and packing as 16-bits rather than 32-bits).
- Calculate and send a device type number for each emulated port with the netplay login data(the data is not used currently by mednafen-server, but will be in the future).
- Reworked the multithreaded CD reading code to use condition variables, rather than repeatedly unlocking, sleeping, and locking mutexes. This should help with performance a bit, and will prevent a lot of unnecessary CPU/CPU core wakeups, especially after loading multiple disc images with M3U files(since a read thread is created for each disc image, at least when CD image memcaching is disabled, the default).
- Moved common parts of the MDFNI_Load and MDFNI_LoadCD functions into a separate function to reduce code duplication.
- Emulation modules´ LoadCD functions all now throw exceptions on error, so changed the function pointer prototype to remove the return type(void all the way!).
- PCE, PCE_FAST, PC-FX, MD: Make better use of exceptions(and handle some that were not handled properly before) in the game loading and initialization code paths.
- Emulation modules´ Load and LoadCD functions may now throw exceptions upwards instead of calling MDFN_PrintError() and returning 0.
- Reworked IPS parsing and applying code to use exceptions, and Stream instead of stdio file access.
- Reworked MDFNFILE to use exceptions to signal errors on file loading(the memory-stream functions provided primarily for the NES module´s use still don´t throw exceptions, however).
- Lynx: Removed undocumented(and largely pointless) support for loading a gzip or ZIP-compressed "lynxboot.img" firmware file.
- GB: Made game loading code more resilient to avoid leaking memory if an error occurs during game load.
- Added a gcc format string check attribute to an MDFN_Error constructor, and fixed a few minor format string problems this checking exposed.
- GBA: Reworked save file type parsing code to use FileStream instead of stdio.
- GBA: Sanitize a few variables in the flash memory save state loading code to prevent malicious save states blah blah blah.
- GBA: Added masks to array access in the EEPROM emulation code to prevent malicious save states from corrupting the heap.
- GBA: EEPROM file loading code now errors out if there´s an error opening or reading the file(but not if the error is that it simply does not exist), or the file is of an unexpected/incorrect size.
- NES: The filename scanning to select region/video standard(NTSC or PAL), controlled via the "nes.fnscan" setting, now uses the filename and path stored in the ZIP file(when loading a NES game from a ZIP file) rather than the name of the ZIP file itself. Additionally, the filename scanning feature no longer is affected by strings in the file extension(though I doubt this will affect anyone, as you´d have to be pretty deranged to name a NES game file like that).
- PSX: Made CD-DA playback position report code more correct and resilient in regards to Q subchannel checksum errors.
- PSX: Added settings to allow for scaling the analog stick axis values, to work around the issue of different logical ranges of motion for PS1 DualShock and Dual Analog controllers versus more modern PC-compatible gamepads.
- Added logic to gracefully fall back to other fullscreen stretch modes if the current fullscreen resolution is too low to support the stretch mode selected.
- Added support for mapping joystick axes to lightgun screen coordinates; however, the configuration must be done manually by editing the configuration file. (Additionally, the translation will not function properly if the software-rotation feature(via ALT+O) is used.)
Example:
psx.input.port2.guncon.x_axis joystick 630f0eab74165481 00008000
psx.input.port2.guncon.y_axis joystick 630f0eab74165481 00008001
Alternate coordinate translation for fullscreen mode, intended for physical modern lightgun and pointer devices:
psx.input.port2.guncon.x_axis joystick 630f0eab74165481 00048000
psx.input.port2.guncon.y_axis joystick 630f0eab74165481 00048001
- GB: Cleaned up the memory-mapper code, fixing a few bugs that allowed some games(like "Best of the Best Championship Karate") to cause Mednafen itself to crash.
- GB: Fixed MBC7 support(it´s been broken in Mednafen for a loooong time).
- GB: Disabled the broken simulation of HDMA overhead that seemed to be doing more harm than good; fixes problems with unstable framerates and inaccurate slowdown on some GBC games(such as "Shantae").
- MD, NGP, WonderSwan: Fixed potential memory leaks(memory was not really leaked due to how Mednafen is currently structured, but they could have become problematic leaks in the future).
- Merge clamp.h into math_ops.h.
- More #include statement changes in emulation module sources to use #include style instead of #include "../BLAH".
- Fixed a bug that was causing the output image to be distorted when rotation(via ALT+O) was used in conjunction with a *.videoip setting value of "x" or "y".
- Added a test/demo module to help work out bugs in the video processing code paths.
- Reworked the build system and numerous source code and header files to allow for less sloppiness with -I include paths.
- GB: Statically-allocate a 320-byte graphics buffer instead of malloc()´ing it.
- Fixed a problem with the configure script so it will (hopefully) no longer error out when cross-compiling.
- MD: memset() line buffer padding areas to prevent sprite rendering from reading from uninitialized memory.
- MD: Fixed violations of strict aliasing in the 68K CPU core.
- PC-FX, VB: Replaced SoftFloat, used in FPU emulation, with newly-written-while-sleep-deprived code. It´s possible this may cause regressions, since floating-point stuff is rather hairy...
- Fixed an ancient bug that made iterative multibyte-value cheat searches extremely unreliable.
- Fixed a bug that broke the output image when displaying a source image with multiple horizontal resolutions at a specific rotation angle(selected via ALT+O).
- Added support for negative .scanlines setting values, which will change scanline behavior and size to overlay/obscure the previous field´s line data if "video.deinterlacer" is set to "weave".
- Added setting "video.deinterlacer", default value of "weave".
- NES: Align a temporary line buffer array to prevent the possibility of a CPU fault and/or poor performance on non-x86 platforms.
- Simplified handling of muli-horizontal-resolution frames by changing "LineWidths"´s type from MDFN_Rect(representing x offset and width) to a simple int32(representing just width).
- GB: Added support for custom palettes that specify BGP, OBP0, and OBP1 colors independently.
- PC-FX, VB: Corrected the debugger´s disassembly of the 5-bit sign-extended immediate form of "mov" (the disassembler was failing to sign-extend).

NES emulator for Windows/Linux has been updated. Changes:
- I continued to work hard on the synchronization between CPU/PPU and CPU/APU to make it more accurate. Now "Micro Machines (Camerica) [!]. nes" works without any graphical glitches also "Huge Insect (Sachen) [!].nes" finally works perfectly. Considering that the changes affecting the core of the emulator, I have tested many roms (tests and games) and it seems that everything is running smoothly, but if someone were to find some roms that gives problems with this release, please contact me. Thanks to x0000 for the help on the front of the CPU/APU.
- Fixed some bugs in the handling of compressed files with the game genie active (thx Chad).

Cheesetoe by RbR and Skomp is a GameCube game released at Revision 2014. Try to score by closing boxes on the grid. You can either set a side, shift a row/column or throw a bomb per turn. The powerups are located on the grid and you can get them by closing a box at their position. The game is over when every box on the grid has been closed. Be careful: if you still have bombs left when the game ends, you’ll loose points!

Wii hack no end of surprise and shows once again today by offering no less an alternative to official servers online, Nintendo has not seen fit to keep online longer (the Access will be cut May 20, 2014). This multi-platform software (Windows, Mac, Linux) allows to patch your iso Mario Kart Wii (game official or derivatives hacked) so you can connect to a dedicated server alternative set up by enthusiasts and developers very gifted in this area. So you can again enjoy the pleasures of online multiplayer. It is stated that this is a version that is still in alpha stage, which may still contain bugs. Nevertheless, the results of the test team are very encouraging: the battle and versus modes work both in private mode, regional and worldwide. Citation:My test team played versus and battle in rooms, in regions and worldwide. We played Mario Kart Wii and standard Wiimms MKW-Fun
Note that a generic patch is available for patching other games with online mode. Feel free to visit the official website to learn about opportunities but also rules governing these alternative servers (the cheating may cause a ban, unless the parties to any private with knowingly). System also allows the use of friend codes ... to be tested here wiimmfi-Patcher for Mario Kart Wii wiimmfi-patcher (generic)

Today we are very proud to present Gateway firmware 2.2 “OMEGA” which is packing quite a few of highly anticipated features!
So let’s take a look:
* Online support
That’s right, now you can play online with your friends!
As we hinted in our previous firmware release, the current “scene” dumps are missing critical data which is needed for online support.
Our game card dumper however does create proper dumps, and will allow you to play online.
To play online you will need a game dumped with our Game Card dumper and you must rename the file extension from .3DS to .3DZ in order to avoid accidental activation of online support.
As always, use online play at your own risk. Since online play is linked to a genuine Game Card, we do not recommend that multiple users go online with the same game dump simultaneously as it will most likely result in a future online ban.
We cannot help you if your 3ds console gets banned from online play.
* Homebrew support
It was about time this happened, so now you can develop and run homebrew games and applications just like the real deal!
In particular, we would like to thank smea for his contributions, otherwise none of this would be possible.
You can find a sample homebrew 3ds game in our downloads section, and we hope to see many more!
Note that the ctrulib homebrew library is not yet completely stable, as can be seen in the graphical artifacts and when closing the homebrew application.
* Savegame backup and restore
Some users have requested the ability to backup and restore savegames from retail cards, so here it is!
Simply launch the Gateway menu by holding L and you will see two new icons for savegame backup and restore.
The savegame will be stored on the regular 3DS SD card.
* Improved Game Card Dumper
We fixed a minor bug that caused some Game Cards not to be detected by our dumper. This should now work.
Available in our download section here
ENJOY!

We thank everyone for their praise and feedback regarding our latest firmware which brought homebrew and online play support.
With each new firmware update we prove to be unrivalled in our originality, ingenuity and support.
Innovation and fantastic product support are the key ideas that sets us apart from the imitators.
These key ideas are what ensure our community will prosper.
Yes, we heard the feedback about the savegame mechanism, and we have plans to improve this and bring it to a whole new level of support.
Yes, we heard about the latest 7.2.0 system firmware, and there is no need to worry.
We have been working on the new encryption puzzle added by the later system firmwares but as they say, the proof is in the pudding.
And unfortunately the pudding is not ready yet, but we know it will be delicious.
This is our top priority right now so please bear with us while we stir and work our magic!
And as always, support the innovators not the imitators!

Nintendo launched Photos with Mario on the U.S. 3DS eShop today, an augmented-reality camera app.
The free program lets players pose 3D models Mario characters like the plumber himself, Peach, and a Goomba in real-world scenarios using the 3DS camera. Players can arrange multiple characters in a single photo using special AR Cards, blow on the screen to make them strike a pose, and take photos with a timer.
The AR cards come packed in with $10 Nintendo eShop cards available exclusively at Target. Or you could print them out from this AR Cards Database listing - which also seems to be the only way to access the Koopa Troopa, Luigi, and Bowser cards outside of Japan at the moment.
Photos with Mario is separate from the AR Games app and cards which come with every 3DS system.
Nintendo has not announced any plans to bring the app and its special eShop cards to Europe.

Mario Kart 8 could be the push Wii U needs for a more sustainable sales momentum, Nintendo UK's Mario brand manager has said.
Roger Langford told MCV that Nintendo is putting a lot of effort into pushing the game before its launch and plans to continue that effort afterward. The company published two new TV commercials for the racer on Monday.
"I certainly feel that Mario Kart 8 can be the catalyst that will broaden Wii U's horizons," Langford said. "It's very important for us that we have a successful launch and continue the promotion throughout the year and beyond."
Langford said it wouldn't be the first time that Mario Kart has demonstrated the value of Nintendo hardware: from the original, which was one of the first two-player racing games on SNES, to Mario Kart Wii, which was one of the system's best-integrated online titles.
"Mario Kart is one of our killer titles," Langford said. "Looking back at Super Mario Kart and then moving through the ages, you can see how integral Mario Kart is to Nintendo hardware. It always brings out the best in whatever hardware it is on."
In our Mario Kart 8 review, we hailed it as "a multiplayer event showcasing Nintendo doing what it does best: bashing your expectations (which should already have been lofty) into dust and then rebuilding them anew into something bigger and better than you had imagined."
A Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition package is available to pre-order now ahead of the Mario Kart 8 release date of May 30.

Who out there hasn’t angrily thrown a game controller across the room after continually getting killed by some stupid game-controlled villain? That is such a bummer! You probably wished there was some way to ‘just get past that point’. To take a step in that direction, [Ben] created an Artificial Intelligence program that will win at Pokemon Blue for Game Boy Advance.
The game is run in a Game Boy Advance emulator known as Visual Boy Tracer, which itself is a modified version of the most common GBA emulator, Visual Boy Advance. What sets Visual Boy Advance apart from the rest is that it has a memory dump feature which allows the user to send both the RAM and the ROM out of the emulator. The RAM holds all values currently needed by the emulator, this includes everything from text arrow flash times to details about currently battling Pokemon to the players position in the currently loaded map. The memory dump feature is key to allow the AI to understand what is happening in the game.

Did you know the blue ‘spiny’ shell in Mario Kart can now be stopped?
I didn’t. Nintendo UK’s Mario brand manager Roger Langford revealed this to me in our interview this week. A new special item can stop the shell (which for the six people who don’t know mercilessly hunts down the player in pole position and blows up) in its tracks.
It’s just one of the many little things Mario Kart 8 does that goes beyond just sprucing up Nintendo’s iconic racing series with pretty visuals. There’s the new online mode, the Mario Kart TV option (which lets gamers make their own highlights reel and upload it to YouTube), the anti-gravity feature…and although I dismissed ‘just sprucing up’ the visuals two sentences ago, the game is arguably one of the most graphically stunning titles Nintendo has created.
“Mario Kart 8 really harnesses the capability of Wii U, it has HD graphics and runs at 60 frames per second constantly in single and multiplayer,” boasts Langford.
“There are lots of tweaks in the game that on the face of it might not sound like much. But we are looking to seed these bits out to the core Mario Kart fans via our online and social media campaign, and get that word-of-mouth and buzz up to launch. So that when we get to release day, we have the big TV campaign to make the big splash, but also the fans are raring to go.”
“Mario Kart is one of our killer titles. Looking back at
Super Mario Kart and then moving through the ages,
you can see how integral Mario Kart is to Nintendo
hardware. It always brings out the best in whatever
hardware it is on. Super Mario Kart was one of the first
two-player racing games out at the time. The N64
version was one of the first to allow four-player split-
screen play. Then the DS version encouraged wireless
download play, and Wii had its online functionality.” Roger Langford, Nintendo UK
It is no real surprise that Nintendo has gone to town on its eighth Mario Kart game. It is one of the most successful franchises in Nintendo’s arsenal.
The last console Mario Kart, the Wii edition, is still amongst the best-selling video games in UK history, and worldwide the franchise has now sold around 100m units.
But it’s not just a commercially important game, says Langford.
“Mario Kart is one of our killer titles. Looking back at Super Mario Kart and then moving through the ages, you can see how integral Mario Kart is to Nintendo hardware. It always brings out the best in whatever hardware it is on.
“Super Mario Kart was one of the first two-player racing games out at the time. The N64 version was one of the first to allow four-player split-screen play. Then the DS version encouraged wireless download play, and Wii had its online functionality.”
Mario Kart 8 is also a bit of a rarity in today’s games market: it’s a multiplayer game that you can play against others in the same room as you. So there are certainly plenty of selling points to Mario Kart 8.
Yet in truth the game’s battle isn’t whether it’s a good enough to win over fans (it’s already scored a 9/10 from Edge). It’s whether it is good enough to get people to buy Wii U.
Mario Kart 8 arrives on a console seriously struggling for momentum. Is this the game to fix that?
“I certainly feel that Mario Kart 8 can be the catalyst that will broaden Wii U’s horizons,” says Langford. “It’s very important for us that we have a successful launch and continue the promotion throughout the year and beyond.”
“I certainly feel that Mario Kart 8 can be the
catalyst that will broaden Wii U’s horizons.
It’s very important for us that we have a
successful launch and continue the
promotion throughout the year and beyond.” Roger Langford, Nintendo UK Of course Mario Kart is popular, and it will sell some hardware. Nintendo is even offering a bundle to make sure of that. But is it a system seller by itself? I’ve always felt Mario Kart is everyone’s second Nintendo game. Consumers’ primary reason for spending money on a Nintendo machine might be for Zelda or a Mario platformer, and Mario Kart acts as that important secondary reason. I can’t imagine many people spending £250 just to play Mario Kart.
That’s why Nintendo’s decision to give away one of ten games to anyone that buys Mario Kart 8 (before July 31st) might just prove crucial as to whether it sells Wii Us in a significant quantity or not.
“That offer lends itself perfectly to those people looking to buy into Wii U,” concludes Langford.
“You pick up the Mario Kart 8 bundle, and you can also download Wii Party U or Nintendo Land if you’re getting it for the family, or if you’re a Mario fan you can get New Super Mario Bros U. We also cater for more core gamers, as well, with Monster Hunter 3 and The Wonderful 101. We are offering that variety because Mario Kart 8 does attract such a broad demographic.”

Nintendo is inviting 3000 fans to watch its Super Smash Bros. E3 invitational tournament live in Los Angeles next month. The event features mascot melee on Wii U between 16 select players, and while it is being live-streamed on Twitch, you can watch it in the flesh as long as you're prepared to get up early and wait a good long while.
Starting at 9:30AM on June 10, Nintendo is distributing 3000 wristbands from the Nokia Plaza at 777 Chick Hearn Court on a first-come first-served basis. That said, Nintendo requests no queues before Tuesday morning so there's no need to pack those sleeping bags. Then it's a wait until the afternoon with doors opening at 2:30PM and the tournament kicking off at 4PM.

Nintendo emerged victorious this week from a patent infringement lawsuit filed five years ago, after a US District Court dismissed the case outright. Alleged patent troll Wall Wireless sued Nintendo as well as Sony and Nokia in 2009, claiming the companies contravened its patent for the "method and apparatus for creating and distributing real-time interactive media content through wireless communication networks and the internet."
Unfortunately for Wall Wireless, the US Patent and Trademark Office canceled all of the company's relevant patent claims upon re-examination, leaving the case without a leg to stand on. According to Nintendo, the Japanese Patent Office found the company's products didn't infringe on Wall Wireless' patent either. While there's no word from Sony or Nokia on the matter, it seems unlikely either company has much to worry about.

As it was foretold, the end is upon us - or at least, it's upon those of us using a Wii or DS to play online games. Nintendo announced back in March that May 20, 2014 would signal the end of online service for games on the Wii and DS systems, and that day has come. Or, depending on when you read this, is rapidly approaching.
If you want to get in one last match or download any DLC for the games affected by the blackout, this is your last chance. Not sure if your favorite game is affected? Check Nintendo's full list. Note that this is not your last chance to watch Netflix or Hulu using your Wii. Those services will continue, at least for the prophesied foreseeable future.

The internet was last week set alight for a few brief moment as John Lewis offered an unbelievable discount on Wii U hardware.
On offer was a Wii U Basic console along with a copy of New Super Mario Bros U and 8GB SD card for just £112 – less than half of the retailer’s list price.
However, the retailer has now told Eurogamer that none of the customers who managed to secure the bundle actually received the goods.
"Unfortunately an error resulted in this line incorrectly going live on our website and its availability as 'in stock'," a spokesperson said. "As a result, we could not fulfil any orders.
"In most instances, the funds had not been taken from customer accounts, but a small number of accounts were unfortunately charged. All customers have been contacted via email, explaining that the item is not in stock, and if they have already been charged for the purchase, a full refund will be given.
"John Lewis apologises to all those affected by this error and any inconvenience caused."

An image buried within the HTML source of the official Tomodachi Life website hints that Nintendo of America may be planning to launch a special edition 2DS variant to commemorate the game's upcoming launch stateside, Tiny Cartridge reports.
The image, reprinted above, shows a Nintendo 2DS hardware color that is not currently available in North America. Tiny Cartridge notes that the portable's white-on-teal design resembles the Japan-exclusive Mint x White 3DS XLreleased alongside the Japanese version of Tomodachi Life last year, suggesting that a similar hardware tie-in could soon follow in North America.
To date, Nintendo of America has not announced any plans to releaseTomodachi Life-themed 3DS or 2DS hardware in the United States. Tomodachi Life will debut at retail in North America on June 6.

Publisher Bloomsbury announced that the next volume in its 33 1/3 book serieswill focus on Koji Kondo's iconic soundtrack for Nintendo's landmark 1985 platformer Super Mario Bros.
Launched in 2003, the 33 1/3 series provides critical analysis of historically significant music albums, with past volumes featuring The Pixies' Doolittle, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and Led Zeppelin's IV. The upcoming Super Mario Bros. book marks the first time the series has studied a video game soundtrack.
Written by Maestro Mario: How Nintendo Transformed Videogame Music into an Art author Andrew Schartmann, 33 1/3: Super Mario Bros. will explore how composer Koji Kondo "put to rest an era of bleeps and bloops -- the sterile products of a lab environment -- replacing it with one in which game sounds constituted a legitimate form of artistic expression." 33 1/3: Super Mario Bros.will launch in May 2015.

Nintendo may have pulled the plug on internet multiplayer services for the DS and Wii, but that doesn't mean that you'll be stuck playing their games offline from here on out. Enterprising fans have launched an unofficial Wi-Fi Connection serverthat lets matchmaking and other core services work (almost) the way they did before the cutoff. In many cases, it's relatively easy to set things up. The DS usually works just by changing the handheld's connection settings; Wii owners, meanwhile, have to run some software from an SD card for the magic to happen.

Mario can drive in pretty much whatever direction he wants in Mario Kart 8, but today he'll be practicing left turns on the hood of NASCAR driver Matt Kenseth's No. 20 car. Kenseth will be racing in the annual, 200-lap History 300 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, a track with a disappointing lack of gravity-shifting sections. Really though, if we could at least throw some item boxes down, we'd have a pretty decent replica of Baby Park.
If you're actually heading down to the Charlotte Motor Speedway instead of just tuning in from home, Nintendo will be there with MK8 kiosks for fans to test drive. Mario and Luigi will be around too, in case you'd like photographic evidence that the Bros. are real, just like Santa and everything else you've ever loved. Both the game and the Bros. will be present in the Fan Zone today and tomorrow.
Best of luck to Kenseth today, but we think the competition's just lucky that Josh Wise isn't using his No. 98 car. Can you imagine coming up to his bumper and getting that unflinching Doge staredown?

Nintendo announced that a Virtual Console version of its 2004 Game Boy Advance game The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap is due to hit the Wii U eShop in Europe next week.
Developed by Capcom, The Minish Cap teams Link up with a talking hat that can shrink its wearer to the size of tiny Minish tribesmen. Gameplay pairs the Zelda series' traditional item-based progression with Link's newfound ability to grow and shrink in size, giving puzzles a unique flair. The Minish Capresurfaces as part of Capcom's recently announced plans to port its Game Boy Advance back catalog to Nintendo's Wii U console, and was previously a featured game in Nintendo's 3DS Ambassador program.
The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap will make its eShop debut in Europe on May 29. A North American release has not been announced.

Super Smash Bros. uses the Wii U's near-field communication technology, if comments by Nintendo France MD Stephan Bole are accurate. Following the company's unveiling of NFC figurines, Bole told Le Figaro the tech features in the console version of the new fighter.
"E3 will be an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology on Nintendo consoles," Bole said (via Polygon). "NFC will be used in the Wii U version ofSuper Smash Bros."
Apart from the sense it makes given the huge roster of Nintendo's fighter, the comments are in line with what the company said earlier this month. President Satoru Iwata revealed Nintendo will showcase the Skylanders-like tech at next month's E3 conference, along with compatible games. Furthermore, Nintendo plans to launch the figurines by the end of this year, and Super Smash Bros. is due to hit Wii U this winter. What today's news does raise is the question of the 3DS Super Smash Bros, which is out this summer; Nintendo will release a NFC reader and writer for the handheld in the first half of 2015.
Bole's comments coincide with the unveiling of another returning Smash character, with Fire Emblem's Ike joining the burgeoning cast today - just in case you thought the House of Mario was done with the conveyor belt of reveals. The beefier-looking swordsman joins 29 other combatants already revealed for the upcoming brawler.

One of Nintendo’s less successful IPs could very well be on track for a Wii U resurrection.
Patents unearthed by NeoGAF look very much like Wii U Music and show how a player can assume the role of several musicians within a composition.
Specifically the documents outline a method via which the sound of a user’s current instrument is outputted via the GamePad and the rest of the track is heard through the TV.
While the game’s original E3 2006 unveiling at the hands of development legend Shigeru Miyamoto was memorable, the title itself failed to resonate with either critics or gamers and has gone on the become best known as one of Miyamoto’s rare misses.
Can a sequel on Wii U, even if technically accomplished, do anything to reverse that?

Do you want to take on the challengers of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U with a sense of fa-melee-iarity? Good news: third-party accessory manufacturer PDP is working with Nintendo to produce the Wired Fight Pad, a controller designed after the original, fan-favorite GameCube controller.
The Wired Fight Pad will connect via a Wii Remote's bottom port, so you'll already need to own said Remote to use the Fight Pad. The good news is, that means it's also compatible with the Wii. The Wired Fight Pad will work with any of that system's games that support the Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro.
The Wired Fight Pad is set to release alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, with an estimated price of $24.99. We've been told to expect Smash sometimethis winter.

Nintendo is planning a revenue-sharing affiliate program for those using gameplay footage of its games on YouTube. Video bloggers and "Let's Play" creators alike will need permission from the publisher to broadcast their gameplay clips, according to twotweets from the publisher (as translated byGamasutra).
Just over one year ago, Nintendo issued Content ID Match copyright claims on YouTube videos that featured gameplay clips from its suite of published titles. After the backlash that followed the House of Mario attempting to obtain the whole pie from YouTubers, it's now settling for a slice of it: The new affiliate program would see ad revenue from videos split among Nintendo, Google and the video creators themselves. Nintendo is apparently getting a head start, as it has already tagged recent gameplay videos, placing their advertisements on them.
It's still unknown whether YouTube's Content ID Match system would affect livestreaming platform Twitch, providing the reports that YouTube is in talks toacquire Twitch for $1 billion go through.

Nintendo has set expectations low, but the company could take advantage of the situation with a good showing at E3
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
The situation facing Nintendo for E3 2014 is a strange one. The company has been losing money for the past couple of years, and its flagship Wii U console has consistently undersold Nintendo's projections; even the 3DS has been slowing down. Sales of software have also been less than expected. On the other hand, Nintendo's in a good position to have a successful E3 show. Expectations are low, the company is saving money (and further reducing expectations) by not holding a press event. What can we expect to see from Nintendo at E3 2014?
First, let's look at the landscape for Nintendo. The Wii U's sales are on track to be Nintendo's worst-selling console ever, and the situation is unlikely to change soon. The company is hoping to boost sales with Mario Kart 8 and the new Super Smash Bros., but third-party support is vanishing. Companies like Electronic Arts have no plans to put out Wii U versions of hit titles, and even Ubisoft (which has done very well with Wii titles like Just Dance) won't be displaying any Wii U titles at E3. Salvation won't be coming from third-party publishers.
The 3DS, which has been performing well after a rocky start, is slowing down, and Nintendo predicts lower sales this year of the hardware despite the introduction of the $129 2DS last Christmas. Overall, then, Nintendo is looking at a difficult year for its hardware.
This leads us to E3 2014, where Nintendo has (like last year) elected not to have a major press event, or even a presentation inside their booth as they did last year. Instead, the company will stage a Super Smash Bros. tournament and provide a Nintendo Direct video to fans everywhere. Essentially, the video will be Nintendo's press event, only produced in a carefully controlled environment at a considerable cost savings. What can we expect to find out from this video and from Nintendo's booth?
No new consoles
Nintendo may have concluded that the Wii U in its current form is not going to be a hit, and that a new console is probably warranted. But creating new hardware takes time, and it takes even more time to create software for it. If Nintendo has learned anything about its latest hardware introductions, it should be that killer software needs to be introduced with the hardware. So we aren't going to see new consoles this year, unless perhaps it's a new color.

Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media's legal dispute with Oculus VR wouldn't deter the Elder Scrolls firm from making Oculus Rift games, according to PR and marketing vice president Pete Hines.
Asked about the impact the lawsuit has on Bethesda's potential Oculus Rift plans, Hines told CVG: "I don't think that it's an incentive or a deterrent [to make Rift games]. I mean, that situation is what it is.
"We have and will continue to make decisions that we think are in the best interests of our games and our audience."
ZeniMax claims Oculus Rift was only made possible through years of its own research and investment. It alleges that former employee and now-Oculus chief technology officer John Carmack stole its property to aid the development of the virtual reality headset. Carmack has publicly derided the claims.
Oculus says Rift does not use a single line of ZeniMax code or technology and "will prove that all of its claims are false". The company has pointed to its recent $2 billion acquisition by Facebook as a likely cause for the legal action.
CVG's interview with Hines also covers upcoming survival horror gameThe Evil Within and the complications that caused the Elder Scrolls Online's recent console delay.

Bayonetta 2 has been classified in Australia, sparking speculation that publisher Nintendo may announce a release date soon.
The ratings board classified the game MA 15+ earlier this week, noting that it contains strong fantasy violence.
As part of its 2014 financial results briefing earlier this month, Nintendo listed the Platinum Games sequel for release this year in Japan, North America and Europe.
Bayonetta 2 was initially unveiled during a Nintendo Direct web broadcast in September 2012, when it was revealed to be a Wii U exclusive.
Published by Sega, the critically acclaimed original Bayonetta released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in Japan in October 2009, and in North America, Europe and Australia in January 2010.

Is Nintendo going to finally give us a ‘proper’ reveal of the new Legend of Zelda game on Wii U at E3 next month?
It’s impossible to say, but tweets from Zelda Williams – daughter of Robin Williams, who named her after Nintendo’s popular IP – point to something Zelda related in LA.
“Who's going to E3? I'll be doing something extra special there. More details soon!” she wrote. “I'm going to guarantee you, it's not what you think...”
Zelda (and her father) were involved in the promotion of Wii title Skyward Sword and featured as part of Nintendo’s 25thanniversary celebrations for the franchise.
It should be noted that her favourite Zelda game to date is N64’s Majora’s Mask – which itself has been rumoured for some Wind Waker style HD remake treatment.
All the way back at E3 2011 Nintendo showcased a demo reel featuring an HD video of a modern looking Link fighting a monster. In 2013 it confirmed that Zelda was in development for Wii U, pencilling in this year’s E3 for a proper reveal.
The company also admitted that the game nearly featured as part of ots E3 2013 presentation.

An officially licensed adapter will allow Super Smash Bros. Melee veterans to play the upcoming Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. with GameCube controllers, Nintendo announced today.
The peripheral allows players to connect up to four GameCube controllers to the Wii U via a USB dongle. Nintendo has not announced whether WaveBird wireless controllers are supported, or if GameCube controller support is planned for other Wii U games.
Smash Bros. brawlers have plenty of input options to choose from, including Nintendo's own Wii U Pro Controller, Wii Classic Controllers, and PDP's upcoming Wired Fight Pad. The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. will launch this winter.

Let's face it, if you're a Wii U owner you're well aware Mario Kart 8 is out tomorrow. It's the series' first HD entry, when you register it online you get acode for a free game, and you know this. But, maybe for some foul reason you're less Mario Kart 8 and more Mario Kart Hate. Luckily for you, you fiend, there are other games out on Nintendo systems this week.
First off there's Ittle Dew, a familiarly heroic adventure that's making a far too appropriate jump to Wii U. The influx of GBA games for Wii U continues withKlonoa: Empire of Dreams, and retro fans can also grab Mega Man Xtreme 2 on 3DS.
Sales-wise, a 33-percent cut pushes 3DS games Pushmo and Crashmo down to $4.69 and $6 respectively. That offer ends on June 13, a week before Pushmo World drops on Wii U.

No, it isn't the end of the world and frogs are not falling from the skies. That really is a real-life car in Mario Kart 8. As part of a surreal collaboration between Nintendo and Mercedes Benz, Japanese players are getting the Mercedes GLA as a DLC kart this summer. The DLC is reportedly free, and there's also word of a GLA tournament in the fall.
The news is only for Japan so far and there's no confirmation we can expect the DLC in the West. A Nintendo UK spokesperson told Joystiq, "The announcement this time was made by Mercedes-Benz Japan regarding their collaboration in Japan with Nintendo Co. Limited."
However: "As for the information relating to the distribution of the GLA kart forMario Kart 8 outside Japan, we will be able to announce in the near future." So let's wait and see.
That kart is gonna take some getting used to, but the commercial Mercedes is using Mario in to promote the GLA may be even weirder. Check it out below the break.

Having already conquered the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with its inexplicably compelling blend of heavy machinery and virtual backbreaking drudgery, Farming Simulator 14 is now coming to the Vita and 3DS handhelds.
The official Farming Simulator Twitter account broke the news earlier today, though it failed to mention exactly when in June these games might appear. However, the official Farming Simulator 14website links to Amazon listings for both the 3DS and Vita games which claim they will appear on June 24.
Scant information is available on any new features these games will introduce to the classic Farm Simulator formula, though fans should be aware that neither the 3DS nor Vita games will have access to the plethora of mods and community-created content that have made the PC incarnation of Farming Simulator 14 such an engrossing, unexpected hit.

Earlier this week, we learned that the ultra, super, majorly difficult platformerAban Hawkins and the 1,001 Spikes - abbreviated to just 1,001 Spikes if you're feeling saucy - will be coming to PS4, PS Vita and Steam on June 3. Yesterday, a Nicalis representative sent Joystiq an addendum to that announcement: 1,001 Spikes will also be launching on the Wii U and 3DS on June 3. Hold your cheers of joy though, because there's a catch.
Apparently, the publisher discovered some last-minute issues with the Wii U and 3DS versions of the game, and were forced to choose between delaying the game or sending it out, bugs and all. Interestingly, they opted for the latter. "Our fans want to play the game and we don't plan to leave our Nintendo fans behind on a game they've been patiently waiting for," the representative informed Joystiq.
While a buggy game is never pleasant to experience, there is some good news for potential buyers. A special promotion will grant customers who already own a Nicalis game (VVVVVV, NightSky, Cave Story, Ikachan or Grinsia) on their 3DS a discount for 1,001 Spikes. These customers can purchase the 3DS version for $9.99 - 33 percent off the usual price of $14.99. And as for those bugs:
"Nintendo has assured us that an update could be issued within a couple of days of release to knock out those bugs," the Nicalis rep said. Hopefully doing so will be easier than navigating the game's insane levels.

A free update for Pikmin 3 has added a new way to command your adorable alien allies. The update adds stylus control via the Nintendo Wii U's GamePad touch screen, Nintendo Everything reports. Control options can be adjusted in the game's main menu.
With the update, Pikmin 3 now supports four control options, including the added touch interface: traditional GamePad buttons, Wii U Pro Controller, and the Wii's classic Remote and Nunchuk combo.
The change comes to Pikmin 3 in time for the game to be offered as a selection in Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 promotion, which offers players a free downloadable title from a limited list for purchasing Nintendo's hit racing title.

Nintendo has unleashed the official website for Mario Kart TV, a web-based replay hub for Mario Kart 8, which launched today. Players can watch and share races uploaded from the Mario Kart 8's TV mode at MarioKart.tv.
The site allows players to filter content based on character, courses and race types. Find an especially devious red shell-laden match? Replays can be shared via Facebook and Twitter.
Connecting to the site with a console's Nintendo Network account allows players to view their own uploaded content. While no mobile app was released for the replay viewer, GameSpot reports the site's videos are optimized for smartphones and tablets.
In the Joystiq review, weekend editor Thomas Schulenberg said Mario Kart 8 "is a solid extra lap on a series with a great foundation." As part of a promotion for the game's release, Nintendo is offering players a free digital copy from a selection of Wii U titles for a limited time.
