Nintendo has announced that it will release a limited edition "Mew"-colored version of its DS handheld game system in commemoration of a new Pokemon film that will be playing in Japanese theaters this summer. As the name suggests, this DS will be based on the light-pink color of the Mew character from the Pokemon pantheon. The handheld also comes with two imprints of Mew's silhouette, one on the top cover and another to the left of the upper screen.
The Mew DS will be available through Pokemon's official Web site and in Pokemon Centers throughout Japan. Reservations can be made starting June 23, and the new DS will be released on July 8. The Mew DS will be priced the same as the normal model at 15,000 yen ($139).
The new Pokemon motion picture Pocket Monster Advance Generation: Mew to hadou no Yuushia Lucario, will begin playing in theaters throughout Japan on July 16. The title roughly translates to "Mew and the Wave Warrior Lucario."
Nintendo previously released a yellow Pikachu-themed Game Boy Advance in Japan. There are currently no plans to release the Mew DS in America.

Bandai, the owner of popular gaming franchises Gundam, Digimon and .hack, has announced plans to produce games for the Nintendo Revolution, according to a report on Japanese website FujiSankei Business.
The news means that fellow Japanese giant Namco is also likely to support the Revolution, since the two companies are set to merge this September. Together they will form NamcoBandai Holdings, which will be the third largest games company in Japan.
Nintendo had not confirmed the report at the time of writing. The company has previously stated that "strong third-party support" for the Revolution is expected along with exclusive content from "key second-party developers." Square-Enix is already hard at work on a WiFi-enabled version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle.
Neither Bandai or Namco were available for comment

Possible using Passthrough or Wireless Passthrough in the future?
SD cards are much cheaper than GBA flash carts so it is very desirable if more Megs are required IMO.
Any thoughts or knowledge on why it may be/may be not possible.

Nintendogs, Nintendo's puppy-petting game, has helped bolster DS sales after a sluggish stretch brought on by the launch of Sony's own portable device, the PlayStation Portable. According to Media Create, the DS has been the best-selling piece of gaming hardware in Japan since the release of Nintendogs on April 21, outselling both the PlayStation 2 and the PSP. The only exception was the week of May 9, when overall game sales fell as Japanese workers returned to work after the golden week of holidays.
The Nintendo DS was trailing the PSP and PS2 the week before the release of Nintendogs, selling 21,698 units against 28,950 PSP units and 30,572 PS2 units. But when Nintendogs arrived, DS sales exploded to 96,191 units, outselling both the PSP (33,004) and the PS2 (33,080) combined. Sales of the DS are starting to settle down now, but as of the week of May 16, the DS continued to outsell both the PS2 and the PSP, selling 29,808 units, compared to 27,370 PSP units and 24,122 PS2 units.
Nintendogs is a virtual-pet game featuring real breeds of dogs. The game is sold in different editions, each housing roughly five types of puppies, from Chihuahuas to Labrador retrievers. As a virtual owner, gamers will pet their pooches using the stylus, order commands through the integrated microphone, and let their canines sniff other gamers' Nintendogs wirelessly

Gamespot has the news that the hit DS title Nintendogs has allowed the Nintendo DS to pull ahead of the PSP and PS2 consoles for over a month straight. In the week Nintendogs was launched, the DS outsold the PSP and PS2 combined in the nation of Japan. Several weeks after its initial launch, the DS is still outselling the PSP by 5,000-sum units. Those of us in the states still have a little while to wait to see the cuteness firsthand. From the article: "The game is sold in different editions, each housing roughly five types of puppies, from Chihuahuas to Labrador retrievers. As a virtual owner, gamers will pet their pooches using the stylus, order commands through the integrated microphone, and let their canines sniff other gamers' Nintendogs wirelessly. Nintendogs is scheduled to roll over to the US on August 22.

GamesRadar has the details from an interview with Nintendo of America VP George Harrison, in which he passes on the very good news that certain past-gen Nintendo titles will be free for download onto the Revolution. The article seems to imply that primarily the games available for free download will be Nintendo created titles. From the article: "This is a clever move by Nintendo: regardless of the final power of Revolution and the frequency of new titles, Nintendo knows that its loyal fans will cry tears of joy over a free service that lets them download previous Nintendo classics straight out of the box.

Wow. Good move. When we spoke with Nintendo about the price of their classic “emulated” games on the Revolution, they were coy and left the pricing up to our imaginations. I assumed they’d follow the GBA model — 10-12 bucks for a classic would be fair. But George Harrison of Nintendo just sprung a surprise. Classic Nintendo titles will be free. Buy the console, take it home, plug it in and start playing your old faves. They’ll have to be careful not to offer too much out of the gate. After all, you want people to spend money on the software. But as far as exciting services to offer with their new hardware, it’s hard to come up with a better idea.

Nintendo's DS continues to top the hardware sales rankings in Japan and has now outsold the PlayStation Portable in the year to date figures - while quirky crossover PS2 RPG Namco X Capcom has topped the software ranking.
The success of the DS has defied expectations from most market watchers, who expected the PSP to catch up rapidly with the sales lead Nintendo's console had built up in the fourth quarter of 2004 once both systems were in good supply at retail.
However, a strong line-up of software for the DS has kept it selling better than its more powerful rival for the last few weeks, with games such as Nintendogs putting in chart-topping performances.
Year to date sales of the DS now stand at over 904,000 units, according to top market-watchers Media Create, while the PSP has sold 892,000 units - which, combined with the DS' far more impressive performance at launch in late 2004, puts the Nintendo system way out in front of Sony's platform.
Looking to software, the Namco-published crossover RPG Namco X Capcom is this week's chart-topper, leading a top three entirely made up of new games - with Enterbrain's PS2 title Bewick Saga at number two, and Bandai's anime-licensed DS title SD Gundam G Generation DS at number three.
Four other new titles make it into the ranking this week, helping to propel sales further out of the major slump they experienced earlier this spring. Genki's Racing Battle: C1 Grand Prix, Gust's Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana 2 and Square Enix' Hanjuku Hero 4: 7 Nin no Hanjuku Hero, all on PS2, occupy places five to seven respectively, while US-developed Cube title Metroid Prime 2: Echoes comes in at number nine.
Also still selling well is Nintendo's "not-a-game" DS title DS Training for Adults: Work Your Brain, which is at number four in its second week of sales - further proof, if any were needed, of the platform's potential to reach beyond normal gaming genres and, indeed, the normal game purchasing demographic.

Nintendo has finished collating and formatting all 221 of its first-party NES, SNES and N64 titles, which will be offered to Revolution users via free download when new the hardware launches in 2006.
According to an article in the latest issue of Japanese games magazine Famitsu, Nintendo will definitely offer every first-party title it's ever published for its three pre-Cube consoles for free download from day one.
Famitsu also reconfirmed that Nintendo will allow third-parties to make any number of their games available, though points out that the pricing of such titles is at the discretion of the publisher in question and as such won't necessarily be free.
While it's clear Nintendo's motive for offering its back-catalogue to customers for free is to shift its new console, third-party publishers have no self-serving motive for giving their games to Nintendo for free, so are expected to use their titles to add purchasing incentive to their own Revolution game releases.
Famitsu has also published new results for its ongoing reader survey, where readers vote for which next-gen console they're most interested in.
Revolution is once again on top, slightly extending its lead with 43% of the vote, while PS3 has suffered a big drop on previous results to 35%, and Xbox 360 has climbed to 22%.
Whether or not these figures will translate to actual real-world market share remains to be seen...

I do some freelance writing for various gaming sites and magazines, and I'm looking for a good way of capturing still images from Nintendo DS games.
Ideally, this method should be inexpensive and shouldn't require a serious hardware modification, but I'm open to suggestions.
Any ideas?

While we're still in the dark as to the true 'revolution' of Nintendo's next-gen console, the pre-E3 announcement that the Revolution would allow gamers to download any first-party home console game from Nintendo's past went some way to countering fan disappointment.
But the questions remained: which old-school Nintendo games will we be able to download and play on Revolution? And how much will they cost?
Well, the latest issue of Japanese mag Famitsu claims to answer the first question. In its latest issue, Famitsu has an in-depth look at Nintendo's next-gen console flanked by a list of 221 first-party NES, SNES, N64, 64DD (souped-up version of the N64) and Sattleview (obscure early attempt at an on-demand downloadable game system) games.
The full list of games is printed below. We've contacted Nintendo to verify the accuracy of the list and we'll let you know as soon as we hear back.
But whether the list is accurate or not, the important question is: how much will these games cost? We're still awaiting a definitive answer - Shigeru Miyamoto talked of a nominal fee at E3, while Nintendo of America vice president George Harrison suggested that the downloads would be free.
But Nintendo of America president Perrin Kaplin went on the record with website Planet GameCube yesterday saying that plans for the downloadable games had not been finalised yet.
"It is possible that players will enjoy these games without a charge from Nintendo," said Kaplin, "or there may be some pay structure for accessing the actual product. Our goal is to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible, which could be free."
What's this? Nintendo keeping details about its new console under its hat? Whatever next? We'll keep you up to date with the plans for The Revolution's downloadable content, but in the meantime spurt your old-school Nintendo love juice all over this hefty list:
Proposed Downloadable Nintendo Games for Revolution

Nintendo president Saturo Iwata has confirmed today that the online service for the Nintendo Revolution will offer a full downloadable and playable demo service.
Speaking to a press conference in Toyko, Iwata-san confirmed that the demos would be stored on an internal 512Mb flash memory, though he declined to mention whether this would be a free service, though we would have to presume it will be so.
Despite months of rumour and speculation about the proposed design of the Revolution's er, revolutionary controller, Nintendo general manager and gaming genius Shigeru Miyamoto stated that the controller should still be considered a work in progress and is not finished yet. Nintendo is still in the experimentation and refinement phase on interface and design.
More Revolution news as it happens.

News from <a href="http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3644&&lsaid=219793" target="_blank" >Lik Sang</a>
<BLOCKQUOTE>There was many a day last year when a black Nintendo DS was nothing more than a dream. Since then though we've seen black and white, followed by turquoise and candy pink, plus a PokePark limited edition and a Pepsi promotional piece. Today the next flavor was announced however, and launching simultaneously with Naruto: Jump Super Stars on August 8th, Nintendo predicts it'll be red hot.
As with the silver, black and two blue NDS editions, this red colored version retains its stylish black base and buttons. The picture above is a preliminary internal sketch, final design will be revealed when available. Preorders are already taken right now for US$ 169.90 only.

The latest issue of Famitsu features an article covering Nintendo's next-generation Revolution console. While the magazine didn't present any new information on the machine since May's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), it did note that the Revolution could possibly play more than 200 Nintendo games from days past. During its E3 press conference, one of Nintendo's strong points was the announcement that not only would the Revolution be online-ready, but it would be able to download and play titles from the company's vast library.
To date, the company has released 221 games for its consoles in Japan: 74 titles on the Famicom (Nintendo Entertainment System), 54 titles on the Super Famicom (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), 45 titles on the Nintendo 64, and 43 titles on the GameCube. Neither Famitsu nor Nintendo has officially confirmed whether all 221 past titles from Nintendo will actually be downloadable for play on the Revolution. The figures presented by the magazine are simply head counts of past titles released on Nintendo's consoles, which serve as a rough estimate to the volume of games that consumers could possibly download and play on the Revolution.
However, it's also possible that the Revolution will actually end up playing more than 221 games. In a previous interview with Reuters, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata disclosed that he is in talks with third-party game publishers about including their old Nintendo console games in the Revolution's downloadable game library. Pricing for Revolution downloads hasn't been decided, though two possibilities are to charge users per game, or to sell prepaid cards in stores.
But will all of Nintendo's published games actually make it to the Revolution? One issue that could hinder the availability of some of the company's games is copyright problems. It's already happened with Nintendo's recent Game Boy Advance title, Mawaru Made In Wario (WarioWare: Twisted!). While Mawaru Made In Wario included minigames that were based on classic NES titles, the graphics and names for Kung-Fu and Mike Tyson's Punch-Out were altered from their originals, apparently to avoid intellectual property issues. (Kung-Fu was originally released in Japan as Spartan X, which borrowed the name of a 1984 Jackie Chan movie.)
Elsewhere in the article, the Revolution ranked as the top next-generation console of interest for Famitsu readers in the latest issue with 226 votes. The PlayStation 3 ranked second with 183 votes, and the Xbox 360 was third with 117 votes.
With very little spec details disclosed during E3, the Revolution has been the subject of many rumors and speculation, to which Nintendo's public representatives have not commented on. Aside from the already common assumption that the console's controller is where the real revolution will be, some media outlets are hypothesizing that the console itself might be meant to be carried around, thus the reason for it being as small as three DVD cases. Its quaint size could allow users without Internet connections to carry the console to a wireless hotspot and hook up to the Web. Another possible feature of the Revolution is the stand that snaps on to it might actually turn out to be a cradle for recharging, which would explain why Nintendo presented it together with the console at the E3.

The latest issue of Famitsu reports that Donkey Kong will be among the titles scheduled for release on the upcoming Nintendo Revolution. This is the first news of the cybersimian, spawned in 1981 by Nintendo creative whiz Shigeru Miyamoto, heading for next-gen consoles.
Other games announced at E3 and confirmed by the magazine include new games in the Super Mario, Legend of Zelda, Smash Brothers, and Metroid franchises. Square Enix is also developing a version of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the console.
That means three of Nintendo's most popular franchises have been confirmed for release on the Revolution. Super Mario is currently the company's top-selling franchise, with 181.17 million units shipped worldwide to date. Donkey Kong is the company's third best-selling series with 46.51 million units shipped worldwide, and the Legend of Zelda series is its fourth best-selling franchise, with 46.33 million units shipped worldwide thus far.
However, one of Nintendo's second best-selling series, Pokemon, is curiously missing. With a total of 100 million games shipped worldwide as of last year, it's difficult to imagine the Revolution will proceed without a game based on the pocket monsters.

According to a recent article in Famitsu magazine downloading classic Nintendo games onto your Revolution will not be free. Boss man, Satoru Itawa, explicitly stated the fact, but added that some games might be available for free download as a bonus for purchasing a Revolution title or through special promotions. Packaging retro titles with current games is nothing new, but perhaps Nintendo will put a revolutionary spin on the concept—say, buy Mario Revolution (not a real title) and download any three Mario-related games from the past.
No word yet on the cost of downloads, or whether or not pricing will vary based on generation. We’ll keep you posted.

Hello,
First of all, just registered, liking the site .
I have a question which I hope someone here can help me with.
I can't find any decent information about it.
Using Wifime and my Nintendo Ds without a flashcart I can easily
send those ripped demo's from e3 and the others and play them
perfectly fine.
Whenever I use Wifime and a homebrew game such as GorillaDS or
any other homebrew game it sends the game, boots up and when I see
the Nintendo Logo on the TOP screen it just fades out a bit and freezes.
I was thinking this was because of the firmware that i haven't patched but when I try to launch that firmware application using Wifime it does the exact same thing ( freezing at logo ).
A friend of mine is having the exact same problem, that's why I decided to post about this problem in the hope someone can explain what I'm doing wrong or what I should do.
Kinds regards

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has wafted away a little smoke surrounding the next-gen Revolution, killing off rumours surrounding the next-gen console's featured retro download functionality while speaking at a business strategy conference yesterday.
Revealing that the Revolution's system to download back catalogue Nintendo console games is called Virtual Console, Iwata-san confirmed that first-party games from Nintendo's previous consoles released for download onto Revolution will not be made available for free, saying "...we have no plans to distribute [the games] without charge."
However, for users to gain access to the downloads it might not simply be a case of paying up on a per title basis. Iwata-san stated that Nintendo believes "there's a number of ways that we can use the system, such as to offer a bonus download with the purchase of a new game, or allow some games to be downloaded during a limited time during a campaign period."
Although much of the focus on Virtual Console in past weeks has been directed toward first-party titles to be made available, Iwata-san said that Nintendo hopes to create a format that can additionally be used by third-parties "to make a profit by using the resources from our past."
He also let slip that we'll be able to download demos to our DS at home, although didn't elaborate on this feature. Nor was any mention made of DS-to-Revolution connectivity, which surely must be on the cards, but Iwata-san did touch on Revolution's internal 512Mb flash memory briefly - it will be used for downloading games through Virtual Console, for saving game data and for expansion of the Revolution's capabilities, whatever that means.
Satoru Iwata spent time talking about Nintendo's online service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, during the business conference too, saying that it hopes that 90-plus percent of punters will use the service to play online games.
In Japan at least, Nintendo is to establish 1,000 wireless hotspots in key areas and shops selling Nintendo products, and users won't be charged to play games published by Nintendo online. It could be a different story with third-party published titles though, third-parties potentially charging for online play.
It was also revealed that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection users will be able to shut themselves away from the general pubic and choose to play online in 'closed', private sessions just with friends if desired.
And if you're concerned over a lack of wireless internet connection in your home, the good news is that, according to Famitsu, Nintendo plans to release a USB network adaptor that you can plug into your PC that'll act as a point of connection for Revolution and DS.
To date, Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing DS are Nintendo titles confirmed to feature Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection functionality, although it won't be too long before the two are accompanied by similarly geared-up friends. Iwata-san said during the conference that 25 third-party publishers are currently working on games that'll support Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

In a Japanese press conference yesterday, Nintendo president Saturo Iwata gave us a few more tidbits about the Revolution, as well as more news on how the company's latest titles are doing.
Flanked by Shigeru Miyamoto, Iwata-san returned to his mission statement of bringing the simplicity and fun back to gaming, promising that the controller wouldn't be too intimidating for gamers old and new, and that it'd be wireless - sort of what we knew already, but interesting nonetheless. It seems, however, that a lot of time is going into developing it, with Iwata promising that we will be "surprised by the Revolution's controller." A touch screen, maybe? It'd make sense...
Talking of touch-screen magic, the DS has been a rampant success with Nintendogs, the tamagochi-esque dog simulator, being the DS' greatest asset, having a unisex appeal to Japanese gamers (40 percent going to female gamers) and thus flying off the shelves - could Iwata have been right to keep it simple?
The Revolution itself will allow gamers to play all GameCube games with all peripherals - those DK Bongos and Wavebirds will be fully operational - and we wouldn't be surprised if some sort of SNES controller á la the japan-only Hori (SNES-shaped one) is released to coincide with the Revolution.
On the subject of oldschool games, the internal memory of the Revolution at 512mbs will allow gamers to save their back catalogue onto the system, and if that space isn't enough, take the games onto SD Cards and save them onto their PC - could this be the end for the Nintendo emulation scene?
We're still waiting for the physical details of the Revolution's controller (it's currently undergoing testing and experimentation as we reported yesterday, and any actual games announcements. Iwata's promising it to be a "virtual console," less powerful but more fun (apparently), and will be announcing more as the year trundles along.

The much talked-about controller for Nintendo's next-generation Revolution console is still under development, according to designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who explained that the company wants to avoid an overly complex design.
"We're at a stage where we're adding and removing various kinds of functions, which has been very fun," he said at a business strategy conference in Japan.
The company wants the control to be basic enough to fits it "All-Access Gaming" philosophy, which it hopes will encourage non-gamers to try out Revolution and its current line of handhelds.
President Satoru Iwata unveiled Revolution, which will be released next year and includes broadband access to Nintendo's entire back catalogue of software covering 8-bit right through to 64-bit as well as GameCube backs compatibility, at the company's pre-E3 press conference in mid May.
Adding his thoughts at the meeting this week, Iwata said: "We expect that you will be surprised with the Revolution's controller," in comments reported by US website GameSpot.
Further Revolution revelations should be made before the end of 2005, according to previous comments from Iwata.

British cheat product specialist Datel has announced the latest addition to its range - the Action Replay MAX DUO, which allows players to use cheats for both DS and GBA games on Nintendo's new DS console.
The product, which sells for UKP 29.99, is essentially two different products in one - a GBA cheat cartridge which can be updated with new cheats over the internet, and the MAX Drive for DS product, which also allows users to archive DS save games on their PCs, which is particularly useful for games which only have a small number of save slots.
Datel also plans to create a selection of "Powersaves" for the DS which will have built-in cheats, and can be downloaded off the company's website.

an article from a UK games news site make of it what you will:
Internet piracy groups have now managed to 'crack' Nintendo DS, with games now freely available for download on the web.
Numerous games, such as Nintendogs and Super Mario 64 DS have now been illegally leaked on to the internet, with players able to download and play them via specially designed flash memory cards (pictured on the right).
These flash cards come in two sizes, 512MB and 1GB and are fully rewriteable, giving gamers the ability to swap downloaded games around as they see fit.
This follows persistent ongoing efforts to fully crack Sony's PSP handheld, where numerous games and a UMD dumping utility (enabling users to copy UMD data to memory) have already been released on to the web, with sources claiming software to play the files from memory stick is just days away.

A recent interview with Nintendo's VP George Harrison suggests the company is thinking of marketing the Game Boy Micro as a portable media device by bundling it with the Play-Yan adapter ?the device that lets you play MP3s or MP4 videos stored on SD cards on your Game Boy Advance SP or Nintendo DS. Bundling it with the Game Boy Micro could position that device as more of a direct a competitor to the PSP, although there's still no getting around that 2-inch screen.

A Snow Bros demo has been sent in by fjsantos & Sergio:
We've been creating games for nearly two years, sometimes just for fun, sometimes with a little economical motivation...
We are specially proud with the project we want to show you. It consists in a playable demo of the first stage of the recreative Snow Bros. A perfect pixel conversion that works on real HW (tested on Flash Linker Pro 128 And Ez Flash Card 128).
Sadly, it's far from beeing completed, but we think it's a good start and it's worthy to try it and take a look. We hope to find a bit of time in the nearly future to continue with it. Until then, hope you enjoy it, and feel free to let us know anything you got to say.

A new installment in Sega CD's hit Lunar role-playing game series is coming to the Nintendo DS. According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Marvelous Interactive will release Lunar Genesis on the double-screened handheld on August 25 in Japan. The game is being distributed in North America by Ubisoft sometime between July and September.
Lunar Genesis will play as a new 2D RPG rather than a port of the previous two installments released on the Sega CD in 1992 and 1994. The game takes place 1,000 years before Lunar Silver Star, with a new adventure following Gien Campbell, a 15-year-old delivery boy who works in a port town. Party members in the game include Lucia Collins, a 14-year-old magic-using girl who is like a sister to Gien, and Gabiriel Ryan, a half-beast girl who is good at claw-fighting and has the ability to absorb and use enemy attacks.
Gien's story starts off when he one day receives a request to make a delivery to the town of Heelritz, a place also known as the town of half-beasts. Excited about his visit to the legendary city, Gien makes his way there despite of a lot of hardships. However, what he sees when he gets to Heelritz is far from the utopia that he had imagined.
Lunar Genesis takes advantage of the DS's hardware, letting players move around the map by touching the point where they want to go. The battles use both the top and the bottom screens to show the enemies on the ground and in the air. One interesting feature is that players can order their characters to run away from battles with the DS's microphone. Whether players can also order other battle commands via voice is currently unknown.
Development of Lunar Genesis is currently 90 percent complete.

The Nintendo DS was the best-selling console in Japan once again last week, with Nintendo's own DS Training For Adults: Work Your Brain title topping the software charts - but the market overall continued to experience low sales.
Software sales dropped below 350,000 for the full week, well below half of the annual weekly average and significantly lower than the 617,000 units recorded in the same week last year, with the low sales being largely caused by a lack of major new releases.
Indeed, only two new titles made it into the top ten, with Bandai's PSP RPG title Hero Legend Gagharv Trilogy: Akai Shizuku becoming the first PSP title to dent the charts for several weeks, in at number four, while Sega's Pachinko Slot! Fist of the North Star on the Nintendo DS came in at number ten.
Four DS titles made it into the top ten ranking, in fact - aside from Pachinko Slot at number ten, DS Training For Adults climbed into the top spot, Bandai's anime licensed SD Gundam G Generation DS was at number five and Nintendogs: Shiba and Friends was at number seven.
Also still selling relatively strongly were Enterbrain's RPG title Berwick Saga (PS2) at number two, and crossover RPG Namco X Capcom, published by Namco and in this week at number three.
In hardware terms, the DS continued to grow its lead over the PSP, taking over 34 per cent market share this week - compared with just under 23 per cent for the PSP, and slightly over 30 per cent for the PlayStation 2.

Nintendo plans to set up as many as 1,000 WiFi hotspots in Japan, to encourage users of the DS to play games via WiFi. The hotspots will be in locations such as toy stores and department stores, enabling retailers to demo WiFi games. Nintendo also plans to roll out hotspots in other markets as well, though no timetable has been set. No word on whether the hotspots will require any kind of authentication to keep non-DS users out, but it's a safe bet that if you see groups of laptop-wielding salarymen squatting on the floor in Hakuhinkan’s game department, the network is wide open.

Gamecube Advanced has the news that the Revolution will not support HD signals. From the article: "Nintendo doesn't plan for the system to be HD compatible as with that comes a higher price for both the consumer and also the developer creating the game. Will it make the game better to play? With the technology being built into the Revolution, we believe the games will look brilliant and play brilliantly. This can all be done without HD." Sony and Microsoft are hanging the moon on the HD phenomenon, with both consoles supporting at least 720p or 1080i. Press the Buttons has commentary on the announcement.

A set of specifications purporting to be for Nintendo's Revolution console have appeared on the Internet, outlining a system with impressive graphics capabilities - but the company has confirmed that high-definition outputs won't be supported.
The specifications, which appeared on blog site Nintendo Centrium, suggest that the system will be powered by two 1.8Ghz IBM PowerPC G5 processors, a 600Mhz graphics chip from ATI and a 7.1 Digital Sound chipset.
The console will apparently sport 128MB of high speed 1T SRAM as main memory, along with 256MB of slower DRAM, while the graphics chip has 12MB of on-board high speed RAM. 6GB proprietary DVD-size discs, designed by Panasonic, would be used for Revolution's games.
The specs differ greatly from a previous "leak" last month, which claimed that the system would have a dual-core graphics chipset and a total of four processing cores, using IBM's dual-core technology.
According to Nintendo Centrium, the spec originated from a programmer currently contracted to work for Nintendo on a DS project. However, it's impossible to say how close to reality the figures actually are - but with the high speed GPU and large frame buffer, the system seems oriented towards high-definition output, which jars somewhat with a statement late last week from Nintendo of America saying that HD is off the menu for Revolution.
Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan is quoted on IGN.com as saying that "it is accurate that at this time we will not support high-definition [on Revolution]."
"Nintendo doesn't plan for the system to be HD compatible as with that comes a higher price for both the consumer and also the developer creating the game," Kaplan continued. "Will it make the game better to play? With the technology being built into the Revolution, we believe the games will look brilliant and play brilliantly. This can all be done without HD."
The statement is not only at odds with Sony and Microsoft's stances on HD - which both firms are supporting strongly - but is also slightly unusual given that Nintendo has previously said that Revolution will work with PC monitors as well as televisions.
Kaplan's statements do however seem to give the lie to both sets of specifications leaked until now - both of which featured large frame buffers that would only be required if Nintendo plans to support high definition resolutions.
It seems that we still have some waiting to do before we see the real specs for Revolution - which may not even be completed yet, if they're anything like the controller for the console, which Shigeru Miyamoto admitted last week has not yet been finished.

<BLOCKQUOTE>On July 14th, Mario invites you to boogie down on his own dance party, staged courtesy of Nintendo and music games veteran Konami. It's the first time the incredibly popular Dance Dance Revolution franchise makes its appearance on GameCube, and does so with a bang: no need to dust off the disco ball yourself, DDR with Mario blasts onto the scene with driving beats, lots of mini games and unmistakable Mushroom Kingdom charisma.
No doubt at all, it's a full-fledged DDR title, that the Bemani community will just love to shake their dancemat-experienced limbs to. What makes this Ninty edition unique is the inclusion of a storyline, where someone has stolen the Music Keys and released the music they held. Without these keys, the unstable power of sound is wreaking havoc on the land. Mario himself must recover them before the chaos destroys the entire Mushroom Universe! The path to the keys is simple: Left, Right, Up, Down, Right, Down... Choose from famous Nintendo icons like Mario, Luigi, Toad, Waluigi, Wario and Bowser and clear levels by performing the correct steps. Once all the levels in a particular world are behind you, a Music Key awaits as your glorious reward. You guessed it: the path to victory is collecting all of the keys in the game.
Please check out the Nintendo dance with the official E3 trailer from this year, offered in either Windows Media Player or Quicktime form:
Players control Dance Dance Revolution with Mario by stepping on different arrows on the dedicated dance mat. According to Nintendo, this cool peripheral will not only be released at the same time, but even be included with the game! Now you can finally experience the thrill of grinding Goombas and other enemies into the ground firsthand. As you clear songs, you will unlock more tunes, minigames and difficulty levels. Split-screen mode allows the dance frenzy to be enjoyed by two players, where while depending on skill, the invitation to sabotage your opponent will certainly prove irresistible. As the US version (DDR: Mario Remix) is still some way off, Bemani and Nintendo fans alike can look forward to playing the upcoming Japanese version of Dance Dance Revolution with Mario in just under a month now. It has been confirmed today that the game will come out bundled with the GameCube official Dance Mat Controller.

As rumours surrounding the the Nintendo Revolution controller continue to fly around the net, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that the Japanese giant is keeping the design under wraps for fear of plagiarism by rivals.
In an interview with Wired News, Miyamoto says: "Nintendo is always trying to be on the forefront of control innovations, like the analog stick, rumble or wireless. As soon as these are available, our competitors snatch them up.
"Because the user interface is going to drive the Revolution software design, that's what's going to make our software stand out. Nobody else is going to be able to do what we do with next-generation game software.
"So, I can't reveal anything. It's under wraps because it's the big gun."
Miyamoto went on to confirm that Mario's next 3D adventure will appear on Nintendo's next-gen console rather than the GameCube. "The Mario team can't create too many games at the same time, so they're still concentrating on the Revolution."
He added that the team has yet to finish work on the initial game concept: "It's still floating around. We're searching for that fundamental idea that's going to drive the next 3D Mario game, but we're not sure when that's going to jump out at us. We're doing lots of tests with small groups."
But Mario fans have always got New Super Mario Bros DS to look forward to before Mario 128 arrives. Miyamoto says that the team working on it is led by Takashi Tezuka and Toshihiko Nakago, who've long worked on the Mario and Zelda series respectively.
"I jump in from time to time, so it's really close to the original Mario team members," he says, which might explain why the game will see Mario going back to his 2D roots.
"When Mario went 3D, there were a lot of new things that Mario could do and that the player could experience. But moving from the side-scrolling game that everybody is used to into a full 3D environment, the game design process became more difficult."
"With the DS we wanted a game that uses cutting-edge technology - you're using wireless gameplay for two-player simultaneous Mario - but also has gone back to the roots of the series to be a game that anybody can pick up because it's very familiar."
"We wanted a Mario game that everybody can be excited to play," Miyamoto adds.
Miyamoto also hits back at critics who have accused him of hypocrisy for commenting on the unoriginality of modern games, stating: "Nintendo's always been about challenging itself to come up with interesting things."
"People from outside might say that we make many different games with Mario every year, or a lot of Zelda games. But within those titles are always new and interesting challenges. We have the luxury of being both profitable and creative."
The full interview, which also reveals Miyamoto's views on Nintendogs, hardcore vs casual gamers and the state of the Japanese games industry, can be found on Wired.com.

Good news for potential Revolution buyers, bad news for GameCube owners. Speaking with tech Web site Wired News, Nintendo creative spark plug Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed that the next platform game featuring the company's iconic plumber will not be coming to the GameCube.
When asked by the online tech journal about the fate of the fabled "Mario 128" (working title), Miyamoto said, "We think we want [Mario 128] on Revolution... The Mario team can't create too many games at the same time, so they're concentrating on the Revolution."
The buzz on a proper sequel to the Nintendo 64's Mario 64 began back at 2000's Spaceworld, when Miyamoto showed a tech demo (link below) for Mario 128. The demo was meant to show off the capabilities of the GameCube, then code-named "Dolphin," and featured 128 Marios prancing about the screen simultaneously.
Mario 128's existence appears to have gone the way of Bigfoot and Nessie--it's out there in some form, but it's more in faith than concrete proof. According to the interview, Miyamoto and Nintendo are still waiting for the "fundamental idea that's going to drive the next 3-D Mario game."
One of those "fundamental ideas" could very well be determined by the Revolution's supersecret controllers, which have been rumored to involve everything from stress-ball-like squeezing sensitivity to gyroscopes.
In regards to the controllers, Miyamoto told Wired News, "Because the user interface is going to drive the Revolution software design, that's what's going to make our software stand out. Nobody else is going to be able to do what we do with next-generation game software. So, I can't reveal anything. It's under wraps because it's the big gun."

New Super Mario Bros heralds the long-awaited return of Nintendo's much-loved Super Mario Bros series, which first appeared on the company's NES console 20 years ago. And, as the shots on the right show, it should provide fans with a heart-warming trip down 8-bit memory lane.
The game will offer players a traditional 2D platforming experience, while also adding some 3D elements into the mix. The DS touch screen will be exploited, although currently this only stretches to being used as a score board and inventory control.
A two-player wireless mode will give players the chance to compete against each other, with one player taking the role of Mario and the other controlling Luigi as they race head-to-head through one of three levels.
Let's keep those retro fingers crossed that New Super Mario Bros will be as good as we all want it to be.
New Super Mario Bros will be released for DS in winter 2005

<a href="http://www.success-hk.com/affiliatewiz/aw.asp?B=1&A=50&Task=Click" target="_blank" >Success HK</a> have posted the news of the release of Kirby Canvas Curse US ver for the DS, heres some info and shots etc:
Kirby: Canvas Curse delivers classic Kirby action with a fun twist. Using the stylus to control Kirby's movements is surprisingly intuitive, and the new control scheme provides many unique gameplay challenges. The rainbow paths you draw guide Kirby through the game, but they also can protect Kirby from falling icicles, lasers, cannon blasts and other hazards. In addition to drawing paths, the stylus can also be used to stun enemies, destroy barriers, detonate bombs and much more. Each of the game's seven worlds is divided into three stages, and each stage holds three hidden medals. Some are easy to find, while others are either well-hidden or heavily protected. You don't need to find these medals to complete the game, but the medals you recover can be traded in to unlock special features like new ink colors for the paths you draw with the stylus.
Get rolling! Kirby's been turned into a ball, so your rainbow paths are the only way he can find power-ups and reach the gates of each world. Draw loops to make him speed up, make ramps to jump danger, and draw walls to block laser beams and cannon blasts!
Be a copycat! Touch enemies to stun them, then tap Kirby to dash into them and copy their abilities. Turn into Wheel Kirby, Fire Kirby, Stone Kirby, and many more!
More modes than you can swallow! Try tough challenges in all seven worlds, take on bosses in unique battles, or play mini-games.

17th June 2005: Tutorial seven is up describing how to use the FIFO registers to pass data between the ARM7 and ARM9 processors. Next on the list is likely to be using interrupts or something graphics related. Probably using extended rotation backgrounds or something similar. Feel free to email me if you have anything in particular you'd like covered.
16th June 2005: The next tutorial will be up in a day or two covering the FIFO registers and how they can be used to communicate data between the ARM7 and ARM9.

Widely hailed as what could be the killer app for the Nintendo DS, Animal Crossing DS looks to truly deliver the dream experience attempted by the GCN predecessor. With the addition of online play, the bar for games with long-lasting gameplay has been raised even more.
Game Features:
– In this sequel to the wildly popular Nintendo GameCube™ game, players and up to three friends can hang out in the same village and interact in real time - either through wireless LAN or over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Now players can visit a friend's village from thousands of miles away.
– The touch screen makes item management and world navigation a breeze. Typing letters and designing patterns are now just stylus strokes away.
– Days and seasons pass in real time, so whether players want to decorate their homes, catch bugs or fish, collect brand-new items like hats and sunglasses or just chat with the wild and wacky characters in their villages, there's always something to do.

StoneCypher has established a bounty on the first Nintendo DS TCP/IP implementation to be released to the community as open source.
1. The implementation may not contain code from the SDK or any illegal source. If such a source is suspected, you will be immediately disqualified and will not be eligible for any later bounties from StoneCypher.
2. The implementation must compile in a free compiler (preferably GCC.)
3. It is acceptable for the implementation to use existing libraries, provided that their licenses are non-contaminating (BSD license, MIT license, LGPL are fine; GPL and MPL are not.) To that end, it is recommended that the TCP/IP Stack List be briefly perused. Remember, commercial stacks cannot be used without written special dispensation from their vendors.

Julian Henn has submitted a playable classic style shoot-em-up:
This is my first game I've written for the GBA - a simple shoot-em-up game,
written in Catapult. The graphics are fairly basic but the game's quite playable, and features high score saving.
This has some nice touches like acceleration for the controls of the main ship and bouncing bullets that can hit enemies from behind

Heyas,
I've been brought here by an acquantaince when I was asking about the problem that I'm facing as stated in the subject. I've recently bought a few GBA carts to play on my NDS while waiting out the recent drought of NDS games.
I have a few GBA carts but only 3 have this particular problem. Golden Sun, Metroid Fusion and Advance Wars 2 (pirated, so I will leave this out). I'm assuming that Golden Sun and Metroid Fusion are original products because I bought them in a reputable Hypermart. The problem Golden Sun has is that it will give me a "Save Fail" message whenever I try to save. I have tried that in all the 3 save slots and still the same thing, however, if I do it a few times, then it will show a save state but with the remark "Save File Corrupted". On the other hand, Metroid Fusion does not give me a "Save Fail" but rather it acts as though it is saved perfectly fine except that when I turn the NDS off or restart it, the save file isn't there.
The reason I posted this is because I want to at least understand why this is happening and how to prevent it from happening in the future when I'm purchasing my games and if possible rectify my situation.
Thanks for the time.

The Game Boy Micro - Nintendo's latest offering in the GB series and the smallest one to date - could be on European shelves in time for Christmas, according to a report on Spanish business site finanzas.com.
"As of November, the company will complement the Nintendo DS with a new device, the Game Boy Micro," the report states.
When the GB Micro was unveiled at last month's E3, Nintendo would only give an estimated launch window of "Fall 2005". The company has declined to comment on this latest news, telling GI.biz's sister site, Eurogamer, that "No dates have been confirmed as yet."
The Finanzas article goes on to reiterate suggestions that Nintendo could release the multimedia Play-Yan accessory in the West. Nicolas Wegnez, head of marketing at Nintendo Spain, is quoted as saying that "at least some units" will make it to Europe.
Play-Yan allows the user to save music and movies to SD card, and then play them back on a Nintendo DS or Game Boy Advance. Nintendo also offers downloadable Play-Yan mini games via its Garage Games website.

Trying to port Linux to various portable devices is hot nowadays. One project is porting Linux to the Nintendo DS, and is making big progress lately. Right after the DSLinux guys had a working bootable 2.6 kernel, they have put lots of effort in making the sash shell work, in which they also succeeded. The latest feature added is the touchscreen keyboard. It allows users to tap in the commands, providing a much easier input method than before (when only the buttons could be used to input text). Only the basics are being worked on for now, but the future uses of Linux on the Nintendo DS are practically unlimited. In other words, it might become a cheap alternative for a PDA, an emulator, movie viewer, maybe even internet browser, who knows

News From <a href="http://www.lik-sang.com/news.php?artc=3650&&lsaid=219793" target="_blank" >Lik Sang</a>
Advance Wars hit the DS this week, and the turn-based military tactics game is all the better for it, with a new battle system that takes full advantage of both screens. New missions will have you commanding air forces in the sky on the top screen, and ground forces below on the touch screen. There's new Survival, Tag Team and Combat game modes, plus all new Real Time Combat where players lead soldiers into a fast-paced, action-oriented battle against a storm of enemies. In addition to leading your army to victory with any of the original or nine new Commanding Officers (COs), you can also clash with up to eight friends over a wireless connection with just one cartridge!
Getting back to the COs, you now have two at your fingertips instead of one. Separate they are strong, but together they can pull off extremely devastating combination super attacks on your unlucky opponent. Further additions include new units like an Aircraft Carrier, a Stealth Bomber which can cloak, a Megatank that costs the same as a battleship, moves 4 squares and has 4 shots, and many more. Finally you can imagine how much easier map creation is with a touch screen, and naturally you can save your maps and wirelessly send them to friends. All pre-orders of Famicom Wars DS have already been dispatched, and new orders are good to go anytime.

Hey i'm normally in the PSP forum because the PSP is 95394320 times better but can you get any roms or anything cool on this thing? I sold my Mario 64, Madden 05, and Tiger Woods (I have that on PSP) and i'm just keeping the system for Mario Kart and possibly the goldeneye game. Is that game any good? I would like to hear opinions, that would be highly appreciated. Does it compare to PSP? I played Metroid prime:Hunter(s) and I couldnt get used to those controls Is goldeneye better?
Thanks!

Messianic hairstylist Kotaku has a poster showing information about Nintendo’s Revolution console. There’s jack squat as far as information goes, but it does confirm the launch date: March 2006. Maybe the Revolution will be that they’ll actually show us some new games.

If this is the patent for the Revolution’s controller, then I’m baffled as to why Nintendo feared that a rival would mimic it if it was revealed at E3. After all, it doesn’t feature anything that we haven’t been speculating about for months now. And to top it all off, the patent’s wording is just vague enough to make me wonder if they weren’t referring to the next iteration of the Game Boy (the buttons certainly match up, after all). But, if you believe gamesradar, then here’s the gist of the Revolution’s revolutionary control interface: gyroscopic motion-sensors, a touch screen, a d-pad, two face buttons, two shoulder buttons, and the ever-ubiquitous start and select buttons. Simply speaking, think of it as a GBA with a touch screen and a built-in copy of Kirby’s Tilt ‘n Tumble.
As usual, the gyroscopes are the most intriguing feature of the unit. gamesradar hints that the gyroscopic technology will be used for analog control in the absence of an analog joystick, though mewonders if the controller would feature weights to aid in recentering the unit. Once again, this could be a very cool control scheme if well-implemented into the game.
However, the touch screen is what worries me. As many, many people have already pointed out, current touch screens lack any kind of force feedback, and cannot be touched at more than one point without becoming confused. And, judging by my own experience with Metroid Prime Hunters, reaching your thumb across half the controller to use the touch screen is more than a little uncomfortable. Of course, clever design on Nintendo’s part could potentially lessen my worries. And, as usual, no prototypes of the controller have been leaked to the public yet.

According to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo is currently working with a new technology that would bestow their classic games with an updated look in time for their next-gen debut. However, he did not divulge the nature of the enhancement, nor did he hint at whether the technology would be integrated into the Revolution’s hardware or be a part of the downloaded game itself. Theorists speculate that it may entail reskinning some or all of the classic games in Nintendo’s lineup, as was done for the compilation Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES (shown at bottom right). Then again, Nintendo may choose the simpler route of merely incorporating a filtering or anti-aliasing method to improve the quality of the existing graphics. Certain N64 and SNES titles could benefit greatly from a method such as this.
Moving on, Iwata also promises that the classic gameplay of each title will remain absolutely unchanged, which, after all, is what these games are really remembered for. Right?.
What’s your take on all of this? Should Nintendo not be allowed to tamper with the timeless look of their own creations, or are some classic games in dire need of a graphical overhaul in this era of dynamic shadows and spiffy particle effects? After all, was Mode 7 what really made Star Fox and F-Zero great?
CORRECTION: As Thomas was quick to point out, Star Fox’s 3D animation was provided courtesy of the in-cartridge Super FX 3D accelerator chip, not mode 7 as I insinuated. I should have said Super Mario Kart, but the fact that I was late for work dictated that this post a bit rushed. Alas, ‘tis a cruel world where blogging does not pay the bills.

The latest issue of Otonafami magazine gives a glimpse at how the next-generation handheld war between Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS is shaping up in Japan. According to a survey conducted with 1,000 gamers above age 20 by the magazine, 14 percent said they owned a PSP, 25 percent said they owned a DS, and 19 percent said they owned both. Out of the remaining gamers who don't own a next-generation handheld, 31 percent said they are planning to get a PSP, while 35 percent said they want to get a DS, 19 percent said they want to get both, and 15 percent said they didn't want either of the handhelds.
Otonafami reports that the average PSP owner in Japan owns one to three games for the handheld; 27 percent said they owned one game, 25 percent said they owned two games, and 23 percent said they owned three games. The statistics for the DS were a bit different, with 23 percent of its owners saying that they owned more than six games for the handheld. Curiously, two percent of the users for both the PSP and DS said they had no games, which makes one wonder what they play.
Owners of both handhelds also seem to think that they aren't taking full advantage of their machine. Seventy-five percent of PSP owners replied "no" when asked if they were using all of its hardware capabilities. Many PSP owners commented that they don't understand how to use its multimedia functions or that they find it too troublesome.
The comments also show that users view the PSP as a multimedia device more than a gaming machine. Sixty-seven percent of DS owners answered "no" when they were asked the same question. However, DS users complained that their DS's Wi-Fi capability goes unused, especially if they live in the countryside where nobody owns a DS.
When PSP owners were asked what they thought about their handheld, they praised its fantastic graphics and entertainment functions and commented that they found its battery life surprisingly long. The main PSP complaints were that its games were mediocre, its game library had too many ports, its load times were too long, and that some games froze often.
DS owners said they enjoy its backward compatibility to GBA games and touching the handheld's screen. On the other hand, they also said that the audio in DS games isn't loud enough, there aren't titles for adults, and the screen sizes are too small.
When looking at the two handhelds in terms of sales figures, the Nintendo DS has sold approximately 2.2 million units in Japan since its launch on December 2, versus the PSP's 1.39 million units since it went on sale 10 days later. The top-selling games for the two machines in Japan are listed below.

<a href="http://www.double.co.nz/nintendo_ds/dsemu.html" target="_blank" >Chris Double</a> has released a bug fix version of the Nintendo DS emulator, DSemu.
whats new:
The interrupt registers have been split so a seperate register is kept for the ARM7 and ARM9. Even though they have the same register address, each CPU actually has a different register. This affects IME, IE and IF. Interrupts were pretty much broken in the previous version of DSEmu without this fix.
Added the 'ARM7 specific IWRAM' memory area from 0x03800000 with a size of 64K. Thanks to DSTek for providing this information. Previously only the 32K Shared IWRAM area at 0x03000000 was implemented and ARM7 binaries greater than 32K were crashing the emulator as well as trashing the shared IWRAM.
A few signed/unsigned comparision issues was causing the emulator to enter infinite loops.
The VCOUNT register is now a single register rather than having one per lcd screen. Demo's that checked for the VCOUNT being in the VBlank area would hang due to this never being updated. Unfortunately these demo's still run very very slowly due to the 'busy loop' polling this register. I hope to have this fixed in the next release.
The SWI values were wrong in the switch statement that handled these calls. This resulted in the wrong SWI call being made. The main result of this was the ARM7 code would do a 'halt' instead of an SWI Delay which meant any ndslib based code would have no ARM7 support.
Fixed a problem with ARM7 interrupts meaning most IRQ code should work fine now.
ndslib Console output would display incorrect characters. This has been fixed.
With the exception of Space Invaders, all my demo programs run under this version of the emulator in some form or another. Sound doesn't play but the touch screen values are updated and directional keys are processed, etc.
Using 'animated step' in the debugger now updates the display. Previously no graphics would be displayed while stepping.
Using 'debug run', followed by pausing, then stepping, would not work. The stepper would be broken from then on. Fixed.

Nintendo has today announced that over one million DS handhelds have been sold in Europe since the machine's launch back in March.
Nintendo have gleefully proclaimed the success of the console, pointing out that 500,000 consoles were shifted within just three weeks of launch, with the one million total being broken in less than three months.
"The European launch of Nintendo DS has been a massive success, with sales shattering all previous records in the opening weekend and remaining consistently strong," boasted Jim Merrick, Nintendo of Europe's senior director of European marketing.
"This product reflects Nintendo's dedication to innovation and the advancement of gaming, providing novel and exciting new ways to play games," he continued.
This news comes on the back of a recent survey in Japan by Otonafami magazine, which has found that DS is more popular with Japanese adults than Sony's handheld, PSP.
The survey of 1000 gamers aged over 20 revealed that 25% owned a Nintendo DS, 14% owned a Sony PSP, and 19% owned both handhelds.
Ninty's device was ahead in terms of software too, with 23% of DS owners having more than six titles, compared to just 11% of PSP owners.
Things are currently looking a little shaky for PSP as the console's software drought continues.
DS has an 800,000 lead on PSP in Japan and the handheld will face stiff competition from Xbox 360 within two months of its European release, making it even harder for the console to catch DS's figure of one million in the region.

Nintendo has announced that it will release a patch for the Play-yan, the multimedia playback accessory for Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo DS. The patch will give the device the additional capability to run MP4-formatted movie files, allowing videos to be enjoyed in stereo sound. Owners of Play-yan will be able to download the patch from Nintendo's Web site starting in mid-July.
In order to enjoy the MP4 movies, the 500KB patch file must be placed in the root directory of the SD memory card that contains the video. Play-yan will automatically read the patch whenever it boots up with the SD memory card inserted. Since the patch doesn't update Play-yan's system software, the SD memory card will have to be inserted whenever the user wants to play back an MP4 file.
Nintendo plans to release MP4 encoding software for Play-yan users later on. The encoding software bundled with Play-yan, MediaStage v.4.2 for Nintendo, does not have the capability to produce MP4 files.

Adult gamers in Japan have a strong preference for Nintendo's DS over Sony's PSP, according to a new magazine survey - published as the Nintendo DS breaks the million unit sales mark in year to date sales.
The survey, conducted by Otonafami magazine and partially translated by US website GameSpot, polled 1000 gamers aged over 20, revealing that 25 per cent of them owned a Nintendo DS, 14 per cent owned a PSP, and 19 per cent owned both consoles.
The higher ownership of the Nintendo DS seems set to continue, too. Of those who didn't own a next-gen handheld console, 35 per cent said that they planned to buy a DS, ahead of the 31 per cent who want a PSP and 19 per cent who plan to buy both.
The survey comes as the Nintendo DS broke through the million unit sales mark for 2005, with the console now around 45,000 units ahead of the PlayStation Portable in terms of sales since January 1st according to figures from market research firm Media Create.
Overall sales of the two consoles see the Nintendo DS with an 800,000 unit lead over its rival, with 2.4 million units sold as against 1.6 million units of the PSP according to Screen Digest figures.
The DS is ahead even more significantly in software terms, with 23 per cent of DS owners claiming to own more than six titles for their console, compared to just 11 per cent of PSP owners.
Those figures are borne out by the overall sales of DS and PSP software in Japan to date, with WarioWare Touched selling 740,000 units, Super Mario 64 DS selling 710,000 units and Nintendogs currently on around 400,000 units and rising - while the best-selling PSP game remains Hot Shots Golf with 350,000 unit sales.

i got a problem, not a big one but it annoys me that the GBA has only been around for about 3 years now. So why the heck does Nintendo wanna make a whole new handheld that is seperate to the GBA. I dont get it. This is confusing me cause i cant see how Nintendo can continually make GBA games while still making DS games. The developers woudn't like to be making games for over 4 seperate handhelds. Sure its there job, but wouldnt it be a bit silly to be developing games like that? Some games may result in being crap because of a rush job, you know, the release date for it gets closer, they may have to drop the release back a few weeks... and it annoys us.

Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo. Whether they were caught flat-footed or are just acting all misterioso to generate buzz is up for debate (you probably know where we fall on this one), but our old friends at Nintendo have been notoriously coy when it comes to divulging details about their new next-gen Revolution console. They didn’t show off a working demo at E3 last month (or even tease us with any clips of game play) and they’ve been tight-lipped about its specs, but lately it seems like there’s been a crazy amount of attention focused on the Revolution’s controller. We’ve already spotted way more fakes and ‘shopped concept designs than we care to think about, but they definitely have something cooking. Nintendo mac daddy Reggie Fils-Aime has been dishing some dirt, revealing in an interview with EGM that they’re already showing off the controller to developers. He says that it will definitely be configurable (he doesn’t get very specific about how) to make it work with all of the vintage Nintendo games they’re going to be offering for download and that it’s this configurability that has developers all excited about the possibilities for what you can do with new games.

Firstsing is coming out with a new gba/DS movieplayer. This new edition is using SD cards instead of compact flash, and is, because of this, smaller and faster. It will enable you to view videos, run emulators and so on.

I am currently in the process of aquiring one of these to do a more in depth look at it.

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/zrizez/" target="_blank" >rize_foa </a> has released an Extended Palette demo for the Nintendo DS, heres what he says about it:
This is a demo primarily for extended palettes. However I also included a number of other things such as 4 scrolling backgrounds, button presses, hardware timers and alpha blending. Also closing the lid shuts down the screens and 2D cores. It's heavily commented so it could serve as a good tutorial for a n00b as well.
Unfortunately it only runs on real hardware at the moment.
