The launch of a new console provides a moment of clarity and reality after months of pre-release hype and speculation. The future of the Wii U is still wide open, with much depending on Nintendo's ability to improve the system's software, release compelling games, and convince third party publishers to support the console with impressive software. Some things are already happening, though, which may give some indication of the Wii U's future prospects.
First of all, the Wii U is already sold out at retailers across North America, according to reports. Over 2500 units have appeared on eBay already, though, at prices from $400 to $500 as some early buyers attempt to cash in. This sounds like there's solid demand, yet it's not as fevered as the demand for the Wii after its launch in 2006. The (then) $250 Wii console was selling for well over $1,000 on eBay well into 2007, and it was many months before supplies caught up with demand for the Wii.
Something unprecedented has occurred during this new console launch: Two major retail chains are offering discounts on Wii U software. This has never happened before at the launch of a new console, according to industry veterans. Toys R Us is running a sale: Buy one Wii U title, get the next at 40 percent off. Target is running a similar sale: Buy two Wii U titles, get the third at 50 percent off. Those prices mean the retailer is essentially giving up all profits on the software it is selling. Does this mean these retailers are trying to attract hardware buyers for the Wii U? Or are the retailers just concerned that Wii U software isn't going to sell all that well, and worry about being stuck with hard-to-sell inventory?
“It's going to be a tough retail season, and given the increasing Black-Friday driven shopping culture, this is a tactic designed to ensure that the store in question is the primary shopping source for the Wii U,” said Scott Steinberg of TechSavvy Global. “If they get you in the door to buy Wii U software at a discount, chances are you're going to do all your Wii U shopping at that specific retailer.”
"If they get you in the door to buy Wii U software at a discount, chances are you're going to do all your Wii U shopping at that specific retailer"
Scott Steinberg
The retail struggle in a soft game market is more intense this year than ever before. “This is certainly a first in history, and it points to the state of the retail and set-top console market,” said Steinberg. “In the past you would never see retailers discounting premium launch software for a console system. In most cases it's an opportunity to mark prices up. But I struggle to remember the last time a console launch had so much software available.”
Michael Pachter, senior analyst with Wedbush Securities, agrees that this promotion is being driven by the needs of retailers rather than any perceived weakness in the Wii U. “Keep in mind that they don't have many Wii U hardware units, and that the total shipped to the US is probably well under 1 million for the launch, so their risk is that they sell 100,000 or so titles at no profit,” Pachter said. “It's a loss leader to drive traffic. I don't think it's a signal about the health of console sales at all.”
The Wii U may be sold out for the moment, but the early buzz on the console is mixed. Some reviewers gave the console an Incomplete, since many of the Wii U's features were unavailable until a last-minute firmware patch was delivered just before launch (too late for reviewers). Others liked the Wii U, but almost all reviewers agreed that the full potential of the Wii U remains to be unlocked. None of the launch titles seemed to be destined for classic, console-defining status similar to Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario 64.
The Wii U is in limited supply for the moment, but the true test of its selling power will come when you find it easy to walk into a store and buy one. The competition looks daunting; both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will be available this weekend for $199, which includes a 250 GB hard drive and several games. That's an advantage of hundreds of dollars over a Wii U (counting the cost of software) that's roughly equivalent in graphics power; the PS3 and the Xbox 360 have robust libraries of software (many at lower prices for classics or used software) and proven online communities and extensive arrays of entertainment, low-cost downloadable games, and other features.
The Wii had two distinct advantages at launch; it was half the price of competing consoles (though it lacked the processing power and HD output), and it had a unique, easy-to-grasp interface with the Wiimote motion control. The Wii was readily understandable by anyone in the family, regardless of prior game experience. Grandma could grab a Wiimote and bowl or play tennis readily.
"Nintendo has set up the Wii U for failure"
Dan Hsu, GamesBeat
The Wii U, by contrast, lacks both of the Wii's advantages. The Wii U is more expensive than the PS3 or the Xbox 360, yet it offers no clear graphics advantage. The GamePad has a daunting array of buttons and sticks as well as a touchscreen interface; Grandma will not pick this up as easily as a Wiimote. The interesting possibilities of two-screen gaming require time and explanation or demonstration, and it's not clear yet that two-screen gaming alone is a reason to spend over $100 extra on the Wii U versus competing consoles.
Those who already own a PS3 or an Xbox 360 may not feel compelled to buy a Wii U unless they are huge Nintendo fans. Right now the Wii U's advantages are more potential than actual. When an amazing Zelda game comes along, or a Donkey Kong Country, or some other title that takes amazing advantage of the GamePad, then you'll see the hardcore gamers line up to get a Wii U.
For those who don't already own a console system, or perhaps only own a Wii, the situation is more complicated. The Wii U is much more capable than a Wii, but also more complicated. Families with a limited budget will probably also look at the possibility of getting a tablet like the Kindle Fire HD, the Nexus 7 or an iPad Mini - all of which can be had for less than a Wii U. Tablets may not offer the same immersive gaming experiences as consoles, but casual gamers won't know or care about that. What they will see is that tablets can do many useful things for the family, and are completely portable, and have thousands of free games and other apps. That's a powerful indirect competitor for often limited family budgets.
The story of the Wii U won't necessarily be told this year, as Nintendo may well be able to sell all the Wii U systems it can supply to retailers. The picture will get clearer next year as availability of the hardware increases and additional games become available.
"Wii U has major potential and if Nintendo plays their cards right, the system can become a major player, especially once the media capabilities and game options are fully stocked"
Dan Milano, ABC News
The following Wii U review roundup provides a summary of what both mainstream media and gaming media are saying about the Wii U:
New York Times: “I have no idea what the Wii U augurs, or whether it will permanently alter how we play, alone or together.”
USA Today: 3 out of 4 stars. “Until we see Nintendo Network fully functioning with the TVii service and additional games that take advantage of the GamePad, it's hard to say whether Wii U recaptures the console magic.”
ABC: “Wii U has major potential and if Nintendo plays their cards right, the system can become a major player, especially once the media capabilities and game options are fully stocked.”
Time: “The Wii U already feels like a much more robust and fascinating idea, one that shows even more promise, in my opinion, than the Wii did in 2006.”
Polygon: 6.5 out of 10. “We are cautious and indeed, somewhat pessimistic, about what the future holds for Nintendo's new system. The Wii U is poised to deliver the same thing Nintendo always has, but we're still waiting to see if it can deliver more.”
1UP: “All in all, Wii U won't blow anyone's mind with its hardware capabilities, and it will definitely annoy hardcore A/V fanatics with its lack of output options. The system's horsepower puts it on par with current consoles, which will be true for... a year, probably.”
GamesBeat: Editor Dan Hsu feels that “Nintendo has set up the Wii U for failure.” He cites the initial price, the fact that the hardcore content is all old, there's no killer app, and the Pro controller buttons aren't properly placed for hardcore gamers.
CNET: No rating yet. “Despite its unique dual-screen presentation, innovative GamePad controller, and ambitious Nintendo TVii service, the Wii U still has a lot to prove.”
Engadget: “Without Nintendo Network, Miiverse, Nintendo TVii, or any streaming / on-demand video content -- not to mention promised backwards compatibility -- the Wii U doesn't compete at all with even last-gen consoles (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 just became last-gen, in case that isn't clear).”
Kotaku: “Give it a month or three. Wait until the "launch window" closes at the end of March and the likes of Pikmin 3, Lego City Undercover and a slew of interesting download-only games are available.”
The Verge: 7.0 “I don't know which future awaits the Wii U. But until it's obvious, I'm not buying one.”

Despite their omission from all released promotional materials, Wii U and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto V may still be in the cards.
Rockstar vice president Dan Houser explained to IGN–in response to why the two platforms were left out of the game’s recent marketing pushes–that any options beyond the two confirmed consoles were up for consideration.
“Everything else is up for consideration,” Houser said, “That’s all I can give you. The main thing is we are not…we are a third-party publisher. We’re not Nintendo, we’re not Sony, we’re not Microsoft.
“We love all of them in different ways. But we can do what we want wherever there’s the appropriate business opportunity and chance to find a market. If that’s on Apple we put something on Apple. Wherever it might be. I think that’s the fun in what we do. We see ourselves as a content company that uses technology. We don’t make it; we use it to make the most fun stuff.”
Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime threw in his two cents regarding Rockstar’s interest in the firm’s latest hardware.
“The folks there have said very nice public comments about the Wii U.” Fils-Aime told MTV, “In the end, it is Nintendo’s responsibility to have a large installed base, to have development tools that help the developers and publishers create great content, and essentially create an environment where teams like Rockstar can bring their very best content to our platform, and if we do that hopefully the very best content throughout the entire industry will show up on Wii U.”
Grand Theft Auto V is officially slated for launch this coming spring for PS3 and Xbox 360.

If you get a Wii U, you must connect it to the internet. The day-one system update enables a lot of important features, like Miiverse, Wii U Chat, eShop – none of which would do you any good without internet access anyway – and even Wii backward compatibility. If that effort is hampered by inability to connect with your router, you are not alone.
Nintendo tech forum user GAMEDEV posted a guide to manually connecting your Wii U to wi-fi. We've reproduced it after the break. We hope you're able to get online and start "Yeah!"-ing your friends' Miiverse posts immediately.

Nintendo of America president Fils-Aime has indicated he's hopeful of seeing Rockstar release Grand Theft Auto V on Wii U.
The GTA V release date will fall in spring 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, and asked this week about the possibility of a GTA game coming to Nintendo's new console, Fils-Aime told MTV: "The folks there have said very nice public comments about the Wii U.
"In the end, it is Nintendo's responsibility to have a large installed base, to have development tools that help the developers and publishers create great content, and essentially create an environment where teams like Rockstar can bring their very best content to our platform, and if we do that hopefully the very best content throughout the entire industry will show up on Wii U."Questioned recently about the possibility of GTA V appearing on PC and Wii U, Rockstar vice president Dan Houser said everything "is up for consideration".

Just because Nintendo is focusing its energy on the Wii U launch doesn't preclude a sweet deal or two in portable gaming. Starting November 23rd, the company is bundling Super Mario 3D Land with Flame Red 3DS models at the same $170 price as the handheld by itself; it even comes pre-loaded on memory to save some of the hassles of physical media. You can be sure the limited-run console is all about goosing Black Friday sales at a time when Nintendo really needs the boost, but we don't think too many mobile gamers will mind if it means entering 3DS ownership with one of the platform's better games in hand.

Situation could change, but losing console now means losing account
Nintendo Network accounts created on a Wii U are currently tied to that console irrevocably, meaning that if that console is lost or stolen, your account disappears with it, along with any stored information and purchases.
This also means that players can't sign into each others' Wii Us. Each console currently has a limit of 12 accounts which can be created on it and which will be tied to it permanently. Whilst that gives plenty of scope for creating accounts for all friends and family likely to use a single machine, it does mean that second-hand consoles will come with reduced capacity for more, potentially meaning that the limit of 12 has already been reached.
An explanation in the Wii U support literature gives some hope that it may be a situation which changes in the future, but offers no specifics.
Q: Can I Log Into My Nintendo Network Account on a Different Console?
Answer: No, you cannot. A Nintendo Network Account can only be used on the console where it was created. In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PC's.
Currently, the Wii U supports up to 12 individual Nintendo Network ID's per console, which enables each member of the family to have his or her own unique identity on the system.

Slow install prompts consumers to reset, incapacitating machines [UPDATED]
pdate: Eurogamer tech expert Rich Leadbetter informs us that the update is 1GB, not 5GB as was originally reported. You're left with 25GB of useable space on the flash storage after it has installed. The installation process took 11 minutes. GamesIndustry International has also reached out to Nintendo for further comment.
Original story:
It has been reported that a mandatory firmware update for the Wii U requires up to 5GB of storage space, potentially leaving customers who bought an 8GB unit without enough room to install Nintendo Land. In addition, the update has been installing so slowly for some that customers have been resetting or powering down their Wii U before the process has finished, 'bricking' the console for good.
Ben Fritz, of the LA Times, tweeted a warning to consumers about unplugging or resetting during the update process, which he claims lasted over two hours.
"Warning: don't unplug your Wii U during the 2 hour plus software update or the console stops working."
Ben Fritz, LA Times, via Twitter.
Geoff Keighley, presenter of the Spike TV show GTTV, also tweeted about the update, giving the 5gb figure but reducing load times to about one hour.
"The Wii U firmware update is apparently about 5 gigs," wrote Keighley. "No wonder it takes about an hour+ to download."
Storage space on the flash memory-based Wii U is at a premium, as it is on any console without hard drive storage, so to immediately lose more than half of it to an enforced update would be a huge blow to new owners. Nintendo has been approached for clarification on the update's size and for advice for any customers experiencing problems.

With the release of the Wii U last weekend we knew it wouldn’t be long before we saw those glorious gut shots on the Internet. The folks at iFixit have torn down a Wii U, and the insides look somewhat promising for a potential hack to take control of the Wii U Game Pad.
The components in the Wii U console aren’t terribly surprising; a few wireless controllers, HDMI adapters, Flash memory chips, and the IBM Power CPU make up most of the interesting components. The insides of the GamePad, though, look pretty interesting. It appears the Wii U GamePad is powered by an ARM Cortex microcontroller built by STMicroelectronics, but the part numbers for the major ICs on the GamePad board are impervious to Googling.
Of course there’s still the question of how video is transmitted wirelessly from the Wii U console to the GamePad. iFixit found a Broadcom BCM4319XKUBG Wireless module that operates on normal WiFi frequencies. This module has been used in a few other pieces of video gear, most notably the Boxee Box, so there is some possibility of intercepting the video signal transmitted to the GamePad and figuring out the protocol.
The long and short of iFixit’s teardown, at least from the hacker perspective, is that all the interesting parts use hardware similar to what you’d find on any other eminently hackable device. Here’s to hoping we get an open Wii U GamePad before the year is out.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Wii U was released in America yesterday and supply shortages are leading to sky-high prices online.
eBay has seen Premium edition consoles, which have a US RRP of $350, sell for prices between $399.99 and $510.00. $480 seems to be the standard price for the high-end SKU.
Even retailers such as Amazon have hiked prices well past their RRP. It is currently charging $480 for the Premium bundle and $380 for the Basic.
With the console launching in Europe on November 30th and in Japan shortly after that, it’s very likely that shortages of the console will continue all the way up to Christmas.

A member of video games forum NeoGaf appears to have found an OS loophole that grants access to Wii U’s debug menu.
The ‘hack’ is no longer available though after Nintendo seemed to quickly issue a fix.
Forum user Trike claimed that he was able to access one of the Miiverse’s back-end admin menus by simply pressing X at a specific point in the system’s menu. Powers unearthed included the ability to delete other’s user accounts.
Also breached were internal messages from developers and Nintendo staff that included mentions of unannounced games – specifically Yoshi’s Island U and Soul Hackers. IP such as Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil were also referenced.
There is currently no suggestion that users’ personal details have been compromised.
The Wii U went on sale in North America over the weekend.

It’s a little over 24 hours since Nintendo’s Wii U was released in North America, celebrated by a launch at the publisher’s Nintendo World store in New York where Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime presented the first Wii U console sold to Brooklyn resident and Nintendo aficionado Isaiah Triforce Johnson, who began queuing for the hardware 27 days before its arrival. Johnson’s evident enthusiasm aside, the console hasn’t enjoyed such a positive response among critics and consumers, and it’s fair to say the launch hasn’t passed by without a few large hiccups.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is an edgier, more subversive take on Mario Kart 7’s hyper-polished karting, with handling that recalls the satisfying heft of Blur’s vehicles, and deforming tracks that bring a little of Split Second’s Hollywood spectacle to proceedings. Those tracks have a more vital role than simply boggling the eye, however, also supporting Transformed’s central gimmick: each racer’s vehicle can shift between kart, boat and plane modes. It’s a process that’s triggered automatically when you pass through blue transformation gates, accompanied by a sound that might make a Hasbro lawyer’s ears tingle.

Miiverse admin system possibly left open; Nintendo reported to have closed gateway to debug menu
A day after the debut launch of the Wii U in the US, consumers are reporting a 'hack' to the Nintendo console.
While the precise details of the hack are yet to be clarified, a user of gaming forum NeoGaf has claimed to have entered a debug menu on his Wii U, without any hacking techniques or apparent intent.
More precisely, user Trike has claimed that using the X button of the Wii U controller while 'hovering over the exit button' granted him access to the admin menus for the Miiverse, apparently bestowing him the power to delete user accounts. Trike provide a number of photographs of the menus at the start of the NeoGaf thread, including some of an apparent Nintendo test survey which suggested a new Yoshi game was inbound.
"I found out I could access the debug menu on Miiverse by hitting the "X" button on the gamepad while hovering over the exit button," wrote Trike. "I found an admin access list or something to that effect. I couldn't really do anything from there though. I could view different messages from a developer though. One mentioned that there would be big games coming out (announced?) on the 10th of December."
While Trike's detail and photographs could be deemed genuine, many, including NeoGaf members, are suggesting the screenshots and details are some kind of hoax.

The digital downloads store on Nintendo’s new Wii U console has been praised by the creator of Trine 2 for its indie-friendly system which allows developers to set their own prices and choose when they have sales.
Speaking to IGN, Forzenbyte’s marketing manager Mikael Haveri says the Wii U eShop functions in a similar manner to Steam and Apple’s App Store, giving developers a level of autonomy when distributing their games.
“That's what we love about the new eShop,” said Haveri.
“We have the power to price our products as we please, with just some basic guidelines from the big guys. The step to this is purely from Nintendo's side and they clearly see that [their] previous instalments have not been up to par. We can set our own pricing and actually continuing on that by setting our own sales whenever we want. It is very close to what Apple and Steam are doing at the moment, and very indie friendly.”
Haveri added that Nintendo does not demand basic payments from developers who issue patches on their games – an issue that’s come to the fore with the developers of Polytron and Braid stating Microsoft charged tens of thousands of dollars for updates to XBLA titles.

New release from Wiimpathy
A Jaguar emulator port. The port is very limited : it's slow, sound is bad and causes freeze. Sound is disabled by default and the frameskip is 1. See vj.cfg file to change settings.
Consider this as a proof of concept, a quick'n dirty port or whatever you call it. That was made just out of curiosity. Its's based on 1.0.7 with some tricks from HCF(xbox port) and my shit. Don't expect miracle now and in the future(unless a pretty good coder optimize it), I don't think it can run at a descent speed with sound someday. Only some 2d games(Rayman for ex.) are almost playable without sound and frameskip 1.

New release from Wiimpathy
A Funvision/Creativision emulator. It's a console of the 80's. The games are essentially clones of Atari 2600 with slight differences (different characters for ex.) : Crazy Chicky(Pac-Man), Police Jump(Donkey Kong) etc...
This is a quick port, you can only launch one game and the exit the emulator to launch another game.
You need the "bios" file FUNBOOT.ROM IN bios folder.
