The first sales figures from Nintendo's latest hardware launch are expected to be announced today, with half a million units of the Nintendo DS handheld sold in North America in the launch week.[br][br]That represents around 90 per cent of the stock which Nintendo shipped to retail stores across North America for the launch, and indeed many retailers have reported that the console has sold out at their stores.[br][br]Online auction site eBay has seen an upside from the early popularity of the console, with some bidders paying over twice the standard retail price of the DS in order to get their hands on one last week.[br][br]The 500,000 unit launch week puts Nintendo well on track to meet its target of selling a million units of the console in North America by the end of the calendar year, along with two million units in Japan - where the DS launches this week.[br][br]For the full calendar year, which runs through to March, the firm recently raised its shipment target for the DS to five million units worldwide, a figure which includes the European launch in Q1 2005.[br][br]According to the Seattle Times, which reported the half-million sell through figure this morning, Nintendo also sold some 800,000 units of the Game Boy Advance SP hardware last week, making it into the single biggest sales week for handheld consoles ever.

I just ran across this cool site that is great for anyone looking to find others to play wireless multiplayer DS games. http://www.dsfinder.com has some meeting places already setup and, if there isn't one in your area, it allows you to submit your own to get one going. If you enjoy playing multiplayer games or pictochating as much as I do, you should check out the site. Having a pictochat room full of people can be quite interesting.

Does anybody know whether the DS can be connected to the GameCube using the existing Gameboy cable? Or even if it can be connected at all?
Four Swords would be awesome with the DS!!

Half a million units of the Nintendo DS have been shipped in Japan for the system's launch today, with reports indicating strong early sales as many stores opened several hours early to sell the console.[br][br]Nintendo had originally planned to ship 300,000 units of the console, but increased its manufacturing capacity after pre-orders far exceeded expectations and raised its day one shipments to 500,000.[br][br]Over two million units were pre-ordered by retail across the US and Japan, a figure which Nintendo hopes to match with its supplies by the end of the year, keeping it on track to ship five million units of the console worldwide by next April.[br][br]"Sales seem to be off to a good start despite the fact that we are launching on a weekday," Nintendo spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa told Reuters this morning, while other reports suggested that large queues had formed outside key retailers who opened their doors up to three hours early to sell the console.[br][br]Late last month, Nintendo sold out 90 per cent of its initial launch allocation of the DS in North America, giving it first week sales figures there of around half a million units, and suggesting that the system will have a million user installed base once the dust has settled on both the US and Japanese launches.[br][br]The console is expected to launch in Europe in the first quarter of next year, with Nintendo UK promising to release details of its date and price plans in early January.

Japanese game giant Nintendo reported Tuesday that more than 90 percent of available Nintendo DS units were snapped up in the week after their November 21 launch. [br][br][br]The buying frenzy is already creating shortages at some retailers, a situation becoming distressingly familiar this year for anyone with gamers on their shopping list. As of Wednesday, Amazon.com had DS units available only from Amazon Marketplace partners, some of whom were charging a $100 premium over the $150 list price for the handheld. CompUSA didn't even have the DS listed on its Web site, while specialty retailers GameStop and EBGames listed the DS as back-ordered, with EBGames promising delivery by January 31. [br][br]"With Nintendo DS sales moving faster than anticipated, some locations have reported sellouts, and Nintendo predicts the initial North American supply will be depleted within days," Nintendo of America said in a statement. "As additional shipments are rushed to stores by this weekend to meet the demand, Nintendo expects to sell 1 million Nintendo DS units in North America alone by the end of 2004." [br][br]Nintendo expects to sell 5 million DS units worldwide by March 31, the end of its fiscal year, and had to open a third factory to crank out units fast enough to meet advance demand in Japan, where the device goes on sale Thursday. [br][br]Big opening numbers are likely to give Nintendo an even bigger lead over Sony, which is set to enter the handheld gaming market later this month with the PlayStation Portable. Sony executives recently confirmed reports of PSP inventory issues, saying only 200,000 units will be available when the machine goes on sale in Japan on December 12.

News from the Xlink Kai Forums [br][br] Over the last few days TheDaddy was successfull at tunneling pictochat. [br]Some of you might have heard about it before. Alot of work still needs to be done to get Metroid/marioDS working, and raise compatibility, but its looking promissing. [br][br]HOWEVER, so far we only have it working on a very specific type of setup. Thats why it is etremely important that no one buys *any* hardware yet; no routers, no PCI cards, nothing. [br][br]I'm stressing this once again because we want to avoid having people waisting their money on hardware witch wont work for ds tunneling in the end.

News from Lik Sang [br][br] Last Christmas Nintendo released the original Donkey Konga, a beat based game using a special drum controller (Tarukonga), challenging players to bang and clap in time with the music. Sure it was more fun than a barrel of monkeys, but many fans were hoping to see a new full blown Donkey Kong platformer. Well, in two weeks the Japanese version of such a game ships, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, long before the March 14th date of the US release.[br] [br]DK Jungle Beat is clearly a new generation of platformer, from graphics to gameplay. Control uses the same Tarukonga drum controller as previously mentioned, and is as simple as tapping the drums in the direction you want to go, hitting both at once for a jump, and performing a variety of moves by clapping, picked up by the built in microphone.[br][br]The bright and colorful cartoon style keeps the graphics as fun as the gameplay, and brings back fond memories of Rare's Donkey Kong Country on the old SNES. Across many levels, the mission sees Donkey going ape over bananas, swinging vines, beating up bosses, and oh so much more monkey business with his friends of the jungle.[br]

Less than a week after the frenzy surrounding the launch of Dragon Quest VIII hit Japan, gamers had yet another reason to queue up in the morning cold. Yes, lines once again formed outside electronics and games stores, this time in anticipation of the Nintendo DS launch--but they were substantially shorter than those that formed for Dragon Quest. [br][br][br]Stores opened up around 7am, or a bit earlier, to give sufficient time for people to pick up the handheld before going to their day jobs. To see how things were heating up, GameSpot first checked out the lines again in Akihabara, the mecca of electronics and games in Japan. [br][br]Akihabara was expectedly quiet at 6:40am, since most shops usually don't open until 10am or 11am, but we could hear promotional music advertising the DS playing from a distance when we exited the silent train station. Following the music led us to Laox, one of the major stores in the area. [br][br]Laox was one of the stores GameSpot visited prior to the Dragon Quest VIII this past Saturday. There were about 70 people lined up for that launch, but today, the line was shorter, with no more than 40 people waiting for the store to open. We walked around the other stores in Akihabara, but it seems that Laox was the only retailer willing to open early. Sofmap, one of Laox's rivals, didn't open until 9am (although that's still an hour earlier than normal). [br][br]Leaving Akihabara behind and heading to Shinjuku, where the crowds are more casual, we stopped first at Yodobashi Camera. The store was already open, but the crowds had dispersed. According to the store's staff, over 100 people had lined up before the store opened. [br][br]Similar to opening-day sales of Dragon Quest VIII, the lines for the Nintendo DS in the morning weren't exceptionally long. However, it's important to keep in mind that this was a normal workday, and those who had preordered the DS could just as easily pick up their units after work. [br][br]With Nintendo shipping half a million units in Japan (200,000 more than the company initially had planned), there were plenty of DS units available. It was possible to find units on sale throughout the day, preorder or not. [br][br]It should be interesting, however, to see how long the lines will be for Sony's PSP launch, 10 days from now. Few retailers have accepted preorders, as the PSP is expected to be in much shorter supply at launch.

News from Lik Sang [br][br] The release of the Japanese Nintendo DS is a true lifesaver for all of you waiting for your Nintendo DS to arrive at Christmas. The US system (including Super Mario 64 DS US) is still on shortage in the USA and no other news than "2005" are known from Nintendo of America.[br][br]We have received sufficient supply for ALL preorders and pending orders with Japanese Nintendo DS selected either as first-option or as second-choice alternative. Our warehouse is currently working at full-pace, including long overtime, in order to get the whole backlog of shipments processed through the next couple of days. If you are waiting for a Japanese NDS to be expedited, it's probably just matter of hours before you receive your personal shipping confirmation, with tracking number, in your emails. If you did not set Japanese NDS as alternative system, Lik Sang strongly recommends you doing so immediately, as it becomes more and more likely that shortage situation in the USA will delay your order a lot.[br][br]Please note that the Japanese version of the Nintendo DS does not contain the demo for Metroid Prime Hunters, but can be set to English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Italian and English instructions are available on both, Nintendo.com and Lik-Sang.com. Instructions how to properly setup your unit to English (or any other language) are included with every parcel leaving Lik-Sang.com.[br][br]If you do not have a preorder or firm purchase anywhere and are now running around talking about suicide because you can't find a place where new orders can still ship before somewhen in January 2005, then the Japanese launch is also good news for you. Lik Sang has successfully secured several thousands more systems, poised to reach us early next week. Many more orders placed this week can be processed within next week, so you better be quick and make up your mind right now, before the whole build runs out.

Those of you interested in the worlds hottest console the Nintendo DS can check out a review by GBAx.com, heres a bit from that review:[br][br] Mario DS on the other hand seems to mostly ignore the touch screen, it is used but not very much - this could be a sign of things to come, we will have to see how developers take to the idea of having to use it in every game. I suspect they might soon get bored and just stick things on there which could be on the main screen like high scores, number of lives left etc. which would infact be annoying and off putting to keep looking at. After shifting a stellar 500,000 units in its first week in the US, Nintendo's DS hit the shops of Japan last Thursday. News that gamers had been queuing up since 6am and that stores were forced to open their doors early were counteracted by later reports suggesting that the event was being greeted with a little less enthusiasm than expected.[br]Whatever. According to an independent Japanese market analyst 230,000 DS units flew off the shelves on day 1, almost half of Nintendo's 500,000 shipment. Compared to other recent hardware launches the figures aren't exactly ballistic, but it's still an impressive total given the midweek launch day.[br][br]Of course, Japanese gamers who were busy on Thursday have now had all weekend to get down to the shops and touch DS. We expect the total first week sales figures to rocket up towards the US figure of 500,000, and Nintendo expect to sell a million in Japan before the end of the year.[br][br]In terms of games, Super Mario 64 DS and Wario Ware Touched were the most popular choices of proud new DS owners, with Sega's Feel the Magic coming in third.[br][br]Nintendo has yet to confirm the sales figures.[br][br]After a strong first week in the US and what looks to be a decent debut in Japan, the DS has set some high targets for Sony's PSP to hit when it launches in Japan on Sunday. Sony is only planning to ship 200,000 units for the launch so it's impossible for the PSP to have as successful a launch day.[br][br]Looks like we'll have to wait a few weeks to get a fuller picture of the DS/PSP sales scoreline. Keep it here for all the updates.

The Nintendo DS handheld is off to a strong start in Japan, with independent figures showing almost a quarter of a million units selling through in the first 24 hours at retail despite an unusual midweek launch date.[br][br]Japanese market research group Media Create reports that 230,000 units of the console were sold on December 2nd, representing just under half of Nintendo's half-million unit shipment.[br][br]Although a sell-through of under 50 per cent is low for a new console, it should be noted that Nintendo chose to launch the console midweek, which will have negatively impacted early sales. The firm lifted its initial shipment from 300,000 units to half a million only days before the Japanese launch, responding to strong demand from retail for the system.[br][br]As reported last week, queues formed at a number of key retailers in Japan who had opened early to sell the console, hoping to attract buyers who could pick it up on their way to work or school, but the launch day certainly had none of the huge queues which have become a customary part of many major product launches in the Far East. [br][br]Super Mario 64 DS and Sawaru! Made In Wario (or Wario Ware Touched in the west) were the most successful titles at launch, selling around 60,000 units apiece, while Sega's Kimi no Tame Nara Shineru (I Would Die For You, or Feel The Magic XX/XY in the west) came in third on the launch day with over 20,000 sales.[br][br]Over half a million units of the Nintendo DS handheld sold through in the week following the console's launch in North America last month, with the company hoping to reach a million units apiece in both North America and Japan by the end of the year.[br][br]By contrast, Sony expects to ship only 200,000 units of the PlayStation Portable for its launch in Japan on December 12th, with the shipment figure reaching a mere 500,000 by the end of the year as the firm focuses its manufacturing resources on addressing shortages of the PlayStation 2 console.

Setting an example for any manufacturer that sells anything with an LCD screen on it, Nintendo is actually following through on its promises, and is repairing or replacing any new DS portable game console with even a single dead pixel (most manufacturers won’t offer a replacement or repair unless there is a minimum of three or four dead pixels). Even more amazing, some people are reporting that it only took a warranty fulfillment center four days to repair and return their DS to them.[br]

Hi - i live in the Uk and have had a DS for almost 2 weeks . .i bought it from ebay along with Mario 64.
I am looking to get my hands on some new games and was wondering if anyone could recommend a company that is based in the UK who import games and actually have them in the UK to ship. I have searched the internet and found few companies websites that end in .co.uk but they seem to be US based.
All i want is a import company that have the games ready to ship from the UK rather than have to wait a week for something to get shipped from the US.
Thanks in advnace.

Hi - had a DS now for almost 2 weeks and bought mario 64.
Is anyone slightly disappointed with the DS? I have owned all the models of the gameboy and there was never any question of me going for the PSP.
I know its still early days but the first wave of games are pretty awful. I had mario 64 on the N64 - didnt much like it but thought would give it another go on the DS . . .hmmm still dont like it.
The touchscreen works very well with metroid and cant wait for the full version and goldeneye - but for mario i find it quite akward. I own an iPAQ PDA so am used to the touch screen concept was kinda sceptical with it on the DS. I think it can work but developers need to make sure that they dont just use the touchscreen because its there and add a little gimmick to a game - it needs to add some value to the whole experience.
The games out at the moment in my opinion are quite poor and even the next wave of games (ridge racer etc) have been getting relatively poor reviews. I think i am going to remain disappointed with the system for a few more months yet until goldeneye and zelda make an appearance.
Dont get me wrong i think the DS has the potential to do very well and although i have criticised it i think its more a software problem at the moment.
Anyway would be interested to hear other peoples thoughts and opinions on the DS now that they have one in their hands so to speak.
Rgds

Hi - i came across this forum a couple of weeks ago and find it to be one of the best forums for the DS on the net.
I am not sure how many members there are but it does seem that most topics are kicked off by wraggster and more often than not there are no replies despite quite a few people reading the topic.
I think as a community (which i guess is what we are) we should take a more active role and contribute to the forum so that all interested parties can be kept upto date with the latest developments and learn from other people experiences.
I would urge people to start contributing to this site and make it even better. I am sure there are lots of people who visit the site who have questions about the DS so i would say raise them on the board and if you know the answer or have an opinion then offer it up for discussion.
I think the site overall is quite good - just need to get the members to be more active and make this site the number 1 'everything under one roof' site for the DS.

Early reports said 230,000. That was soon bumped up to nearer 400,000. Then Japanese game magazine Famitsu - which is heavily associated with Nintendo - quoted figures upwards of 500,000.[br]We're waiting for the official figures to come straight from the Big N's mouth, but it's pretty obvious that Nintendo's DS has had a phenomenal launch in Japan. Combined with the 500,000 units it shifted during its first week on sale in the US, we reckon you won't have to look hard on the New York or Tokyo subways for someone to PictoChat with.[br][br]Possibly by way of thanks to the million-plus peeps who shelled out for the touch screen handheld - or possibly because it was going to happen anyway - Nintendo has announced release dates for some more eagerly anticipated DS titles. Of particular interest are a Japanese date for Catch! Touch! Yoshi!, the new Jap name for Yoshi's Touch and Go, and a US date for Wario Ware Touched!'s minigame madness. [br][br]And if you're still playing your SP (we admit it - we're still playing Pokémon Fire Red on ours) there's a few GBA titles in there too. No UK dates yet, mind - expect them to be made public as soon as the DS's UK date emerges from Nintendo's dark cavern of secrets.[br][br]DS release dates[br][br]Japan:[br]Catch! Touch! Yoshi!: 27th January 2005[br]Unnamed title: February 2005[br]Super Princess Peach: 2005[br]Touch! Kirby & the Magic: 2005 [br][br]US:[br]Wario Ware Touched!: 14th February 2005[br]Pokemon Dash: 14th March 2005[br]Yoshi's Touch & Go: March 2005 [br][br]GBA release dates [br][br]Japan:[br]Yoshi's Universal Gravitation: 9th December 2004[br]Mario Party Advance: 13th January 2005[br][br]US:[br]The Legend of Zelda : The Minish Cap: 10th January 2005[br]WarioWare Twisted: 21st March 2005[br]Mario Party Advance: March 2005

The latest entry to the handheld console market, the Nintendo DS, is enjoying global sales figures broadly in line with its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance, with over a million units sold worldwide so far.[br][br]The latest figures from Japan show that around half a million DS consoles were sold in the four days since launch, with estimates ranging from Nintendo's figure of 513,000 units sold through down to Media Create's estimate of 468,900 units.[br][br]Business newspaper the Nikkei Industrial Daily brings the two sets of figures together, explaining that around 460,000 consoles are in the hands of consumers, while a further 50,000 have been reserved but not yet collected from retailers.[br][br]In North America, over half a million units of the DS were sold in its first week at retail, so combined with the Japanese figures, the new console has already got a global installed base of over a million units.[br][br]This is in line with the 2001 launch of the Game Boy Advance, which sold around 530,000 units in its first week in the Japanese market, and 540,000 in its first week in the United States - only slightly ahead of the figures for the DS, although its shipment figures were also slightly larger.[br][br]Meanwhile, shortages of Sony's PlayStation Portable are already beginning to hit home in Japan, with the vast majority of retailers no longer able to take preorders ahead of Sunday's launch of the console.[br][br]Most retailers reportedly had queues exceeding the size of their launch allocations when they opened pre-orders, and were forced to turn customers away. Sony expects to ship only 200,000 units of the PSP at launch, with a further 300,000 expected by the end of the year.[br][br]The company claims to be focusing its manufacturing efforts on the new slimline PS2 console, which is in short supply at retail in both North America and Europe - with shortages believed to have knocked week to week sales of the console down by around 90 per cent last week in the UK.

The Gameboy Advance and soon to be DS emulator for windows has been updated with a new release and although he hasnt specified whats new in this release, heres the latest news from the website:[br][br]Thursday, 9th December 2004 [br][br]Ok, so maybe I haven't actually changed any code, but it was still high time I versioned up. So it's here, the All New And Shiny 0.0.1c! Have fun. [br][br]Monday, 6th December 2004 [br][br]A few issues have been highlighted recently. First of all, the emu crashed a heck of a lot on customers' computers. I tracked the problem down to a stray line in the Pause menu option; all good now! [br][br]Also. There've been quite a few files missing from the Zip archive which cause compilation to fail. I've managed to put those in, and I've tried to make the Makefile a touch more portable. News from Lik Sang [br][br]Ridge Racer DS, a port of the N64 game released four years ago, is now playable in the palm of your hands. The US title is shipping since Saturday, with pre-orders being posted as we speak, and new orders welcome at US$ 44.90 only.[br][br]Nintendo's own development studio that handled Metroid Prime Hunters DS ported the game over, and took the time to upgrade several features too, starting with 6 player wireless racing. Using the NDS download function, everyone can play with just one cartridge between the group, the other NDS consoles downloading the game into their memory. Being limited in size, some features are missing, but if each player does have their own cartridge, they can each have your own music and such. Drifting around corners, slamming into mates and spinning 360 degrees, all wireless, is something new to console games, and great fun. [br][br]For the single player aspect, Ridge Racer DS includes 20 GP races spread across three locations, and has 32 vehicles, which combined with it's tough but arcade style difficulty level, will keep gamers busy a while. The lower DS screen is used to display information like lap times, records and a map of the track, keeping the top one clear of all but the most important details. With three different control scheme options, the bottom screen also functions as an analogue steering wheel, preventing you from having to tap-tap-tap around corners with the d-pad (I still remember power sliding around the corners of Sega Rally on the Saturn like that, and after a while knowing exactly how many taps many of the corners took).[br][br]If you haven't kept up with the latest DS news here recently, you might not know we have the Japanese DS in stock and shipping right now. We provide fully illustrated instructions on how to change the language to English, and after that it stays that way, even if you reset the machine to wipe its memory! English instructions are also available on both, Nintendo.com and Lik-Sang.com. Being region free, the Japanese DS is certainly the way to go to avoid the US shortage, but it's best to be quick, as the Japanese supply is not eternal either. The full news article is online here, complete with games, and accessories like bags, screen protectors and more.[br][br]If you are targetting a delivery on or before Christmas, please see our Christmas Rush Shipping Schedules Summary here, with final deadlines for Global Priority, Airmail, UPS, DHL and EMS.

Hi Guys,
I recently bought a DS and the Super Mario 64 for DS. I have played some levels already and currently stuck where I need to [glow=yellow,2,300]unlock WARIO[/glow].
I tried all published FAQs/Walkthroughs/Tips and Tricks and can't still figure out how many keys I must get in order to unlock WARIO.
Also I would be thankful if anyone can reply in detail 1) who must fight Bowser - Mario or Luigi? 2) After getting what numbered key (first, second etc) must Mario/Luigi enter which room 3) Which room is Snowman's Land located in the Castle?
Thank you all so much!
(Eagerly awaiting a helpful reply......) ???

Atari are cleaning out the closet and dusting down the hits of yesteryear for the imaginatively named Retro Atari Classics - a 10 game compilation of geriatric goodness - that's heading to the Nintendo DS.[br]Set for release in spring of 2005, Retro Atari Classics will feature 10 original Atari (surprise, surprise) games: Pong, Missile Command, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Tempest, Warlords, Gravitar, Lunar Lander and Sprint.[br][br]The game is set to make full use of the technical innovations of the DS including touch screen functionality, wireless multiplayer, dual screen gameplay and the ability to play head-to-head against another player on the same Nintendo DS.[br][br]But wait, that's not all! Here comes the science, or at least the twist. In a bid to appeal to the modern gamer as well as the nostalgia freaks, each of the ten games will be available in both original and new tagged versions.[br][br]The Tagged mode features brand new looks for each of the 10 games from some of today's most popular graffiti artists including REAS, Delta and Obey Giant. [br][br]Shouldn't they all be out painting trains or something?[br][br]Retro Atari Classics will hit DS in the US in March 2005, with a UK release to be announced when we get the system's release date over here.

Nintendo of Japan have announced a new official peripheral that will allow you to play MP3's and MPEG4 movies on the GBA SP.[br]The peripheral that has the tentative name of 'Play-Yan' is the size of a standard GBA cartridge and plugs into the game-cartridge slot of the GBA SP. Content is stored on SD-cards that slot into the side of the cartridge, allowing you to play your own content via the device. Take that PSP![br][br]The top of the 'Play-Yan' also boasts a headphone socket allowing you to hear your files without buying an extra peripheral. The device is scheduled for release in February 2005 in Japan at a price of 5,000 Yen (approx. £25). [br][br]There's no confirmation yet if the device is compatible with the Nintendo DS, but if it isn't, expect Nintendo to have something even bigger planned!

Nintendo's DS looks certain to outsell Sony's PlayStation Portable, but Nintendo is clearly so worried about its rival that it is already announcing an upgrade that will bring PSP-style music and movie features to its own handheld console.[br][br]Next February, Nintendo will ship an add-on module that provides music and video playback, the company said today. The ¥5000 ($48) adaptor will work with any MPEG 4 video and MP3 audio files stored on a DS memory card.[br][br]Sony always touted the PSP as a mobile media unit as well as a games console, whereas Nintendo, as you'd expect from its previous efforts in the handheld gaming arena, has always focused on portable play. Interestingly, the addition of the new adaptor will not only bring to the DS the kind of media support the PSP enjoys, but will up its effective price to that of the PSP. In Japan the DS retails for around ¥15,000, the PSP for ¥19,800.[br][br]Nintendo launched the DS in Japan on 2 December - ten days before Sony's PSP went on sale in that country. The DS is already on sale in the US, though the PSP is unlikely to ship officially over there much before the end of Q1 2005. That's the anticipated timeframe for both consoles' European debuts.

MGFox has released a new front end for the Gamecube Emulator GCube, heres whats new:[br][br]As most of you will know gCube 0.3 was released recently, and it now has more options on the command line to allow greater control and compatability of the emulation. I have updated gCubeFront to incorporate these options (and a few other minor fixes) and figured i'd give it to you guys again.[br][br]You can find the new options in the "Advanced Options" window. Please be aware that the Refresh Delay box should only contain a numeric value, although the gCubeFront will accept...well...anything, gCube itself WILL NOT, I will create a check for it if people tell me they want one otherwise I'll assume you're all happy![br][br]Run it in the directory with gCube.exe and enjoy![br][br]Download from Here

Well i see Wraggster has not posted this so i will ;D ;D
Take a dash of Wario Ware, a shot of the mini-games from Super Mario 64 DS and a slug of Yoshi's Island and, while the resulting cocktail might be as light as champagne, at least it will make you giggle like hyena on nitrous oxide.
Which is precisely what Yoshi's Touch and Go should do too with its specifically designed DS levels. Blending horizontal and vertical scrolling action with two-player WiFi fun, this adventure demands that you protect a young plumber and his gormless green mate. So as a young Yoshi wanders across the screen with Lemming-like stupidity, and parachute-less baby Mario plummets earthwards, it's your job to keep them alive using the stylus to clear a route to safety.
To help the dumb duo reach the end of the level you can draw circles around enemies, trapping them in bubbles, or create slopes and slides to make sure that Mario marches safely onwards. Along the way, coins also need to be collected and this can be managed by tapping Yoshi himself to make him flutter and fly up to reach the treasure or to swoop over an obstacle.
In other DS news, Atari have announced that the futuristic Nintendo handheld will take a step into the past with Retro Atari Classics, a compilation that features 10 old school classics. Each one will be playable via WiFi and they will also makes use of DS's touch-screen technology. All of the usual suspects are present - Pong, Missile Command, Asteroids, Breakout, Centipede, Tempest, Warlords, Gravitar, Lunar Lander and Sprint - although, for some reason known only to Atari, each game will feature graffiti-style backdrops.
Yoshi's Touch and Go will be released for DS in early 2005, while Retro Atari Classics is scheduled for release in March

Less than a week after Sony's launch of the PlayStation Portable in Japan, Nintendo has announced that it will release a new adaptor for the Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo DS. Tentatively named Play-yan, the adaptor will allow the handhelds to play back MPEG-4 video and MP3 audio files like, much like the PSP. No date or price has been officially set, but Nintendo is looking at a release date in mid-February and a price range near 5,000 yen ($48). [br][br][br]Nintendo's Play-yan will use an SD card instead of a Memory Stick Duo, like the PSP. While the released designs of Play-yan aren't set in stone, the adaptor at the current time seems to be about the same shape and size as a GBA cartridge. The SD card will snap into the side of the Play-yan, making it irremovable as long as the Play-yan is firmly set in the handheld's cartridge slot. Because the Play-yan doesn't come with any PC connectivity, owners will need an SD Card writer/reader to record data from a PC. [br][br]Play-yan will run on the GBA SP, but it won't be compliant with the standard GBA. The Play-yan can connect to the DS through its GBA cartridge slot, and will be displayed in GBA resolution on either the top or the bottom screen. The Play-yan can run up to 4 hours when playing back movies, and 15 hours or 8 hours for music, depending on whether the LCD screen is turned on or off through the adaptor's menu options. [br][br]According to Japanese gaming Web site Impress Gamewatch, Play-yan features a Broadcom (Alphamosaic) VC01PXX-ES2 as its hardware decoder. The decoder allows the playback of ASF format Mpeg-4 files with support of resolutions up to CIF(320 x 240), and bit-rates up to 1.5Mbps. There will also be a mode for recording 2 hours of Mpeg-4 on a 256MB SD card. However, the audio will be monaural when playing back Mpeg-4 files. [br][br]The Play-yan will also support SD-Video format, which means that users with hybrid digital recorders such as those from Panasonic (FMR-E500H, DMR-E200H, DMR-E100H) can record a movie onto an SD Card with the digital recorder and play it back on the fly with their GBA SP or DS. Play-yan doesn't support SD-Video in extra fine mode (320 x 240 / 30fps), but it can play back ASF format MPEG-4 of the same quality. In addition, Play-yan also supports movies that are created on PCs by Fujitsu and Hitachi that come installed with Panasonic's MediaStage application. [br][br]The movies in the SD card will be selectable for playback through animated thumbnails displayed on the screen giving the user convenient checkup over their movies. Fast forwarding and rewinding is done with the directional pad's left and right keys, and holding on to them will increase the speed. The L and R buttons allows the user to change the brightness of the screen in four different levels. [br][br]The Play-yan supports VBR and allows playback of MP3 files with bit-rates between 32-320kbps. Play-yan features folders similar to the PSP, meaning that the user can separate tracks into different categories for playback. The adaptor will also support ID3 tags and Japanese text for its track titles and artist names. The playback functions for MP3 files, such as shuffling, are still in the works. The Play-yan comes with its own mini stereo plug on its end, allowing users to directly listen to audio that hasn't passed through the GBA SP or DS hardware. [br][br]Nintendo currently only plans to sell the Play-yan though its official Web site. The company will begin taking pre-orders in mid-January and expects to ship Play-yan a month later. Currently, there are no plans to sell the adaptor in North America. More details on Play-yan will be disclosed when Nintendo begins taking pre-orders for the adaptor.

After a bit of searching I did find that someone has cracked the DS and has been able to surf the net with it already.
This leaves us with so many possablitys, when you factor in the CF memory card reader you can buy for the GBA.
Not only will you be able to play top notch games of your DS but, you will be able to surf the net, picto chat with people ACROSS THE WORLD, play movies, music, read e-book, or anything else that can be put into a flash memory card, all on you DS
Its really exicting!

Turns out it might not be 'all about the games' for Nintendo after all - a slew of fresh info about the Japanese giant's upcoming Play-Yan device, which lets you play MP3 music files and MPEG4 video files on your GBA SP or DS.[br]And we're very excited. For a start it's now being widely reported that Play-Yan is compatible with DS, although this has not been officially confirmed and every prototype shot we've seen shows the system slotted into a GBA SP. Still, with Sony's PSP counting multimedia playback as a killer app it would seem crazy for Play-Yan not to be compatible with DS.[br][br]And there's no physical reason why it shouldn't work in DS. Designed in conjunction with Panasonic and expected to launch in Japan in February 2005 with a reasonable 5000 Yen price tag (about £25), Play-Yan looks like a normal GBA cartridge - so it'll certainly fit into the DS's GBA cart slot. [br][br]You'll get your music and movies onto your GBA or DS by transferring files onto an SD card, which will then slot into the Play-Yan cartridge. We've heard that the device could even come bundled with a 256 Mb SD card, which would hold around 2 hours of video or 4 hours of music, but you can pick up compatible cards pretty cheaply these days.[br][br]In terms of battery drain, Nintendo reckon you'll be able to squeeze 15 hours of music or 5 hours of movie from one charge - read it and weep, PSP fans. The reason for the extra-long music playback time is that after 30 seconds of inactivity your GBA will continue to play music but go into sleep mode, saving your precious charge.[br][br]Organising your music collection looks to be simple, too. Your tracks are organised into separate folders that you access by moving a wee stick man around and then selecting what you want to hear. There's even a headphones socket built into the Play-Yan cart, so you can enjoy stereo sound in private.[br][br]In terms of movie playback, you'll be able to enjoy video up to a resolution of 320x240 in MPEG4 or SD-Video format - so you should be able to watch video from a compatible digital camcorder. Reports state that the playback quality isn't earth-shattering but pretty impressive for a GBA screen (apparently when used on a DS the playback is identical, much like playing a regular GBA game on the new system) and you've got full control over the video via the D-pad and buttons. Pressing left and right on the D-pad seeks forward and back, up and down on the D-pad adjusts the volume, the left trigger adjust volume and the start button pauses.[br][br]There are a couple of disappointments: apparently Nintendo won't bundle SD card file transfer software with Play-Yan, so you'll have to look after that yourself. And worse - Play-Yan is only confirmed for Japan at the moment, and the initial launch will be a limited online roll out. We're praying Nintendo bring the peripheral to the US and Europe.[br][br]Potential availability problems aside, Play-Yan sounds like a fantastic piece of kit to turn your GBA or DS into a multimedia hub. Sony must feel slightly worried that the mooted battery drain stats are so low and Play-Yan's price is surprisingly affordable, suddenly bringing DS's features in line with PSP. [br][br]Or will those Nintendo fans who continually yelled 'it's all about the games!' stay true to their words and ignore Play-Yan's music and movie multimedia orgy?[br][br]We'll bring you more on Play-Yan soon.

Nintendo DS sales have topped one million units in both the USA and Japan, Nintendo announced today, as the company revealed that the combined shipment figures across both regions would exceed 2.8 million by the end of the year.[br][br]The platform holder also reiterated that details of the European launch will be revealed in early 2005, as retailers continue to speculate on a late March launch date - many already offering pre-orders.[br][br]Within less than a week of launching in the US on November 21st, more than half a million DS units had been sold, Nintendo said today, leading to stock shortages around the country as 90 per cent of the launch allocation was snapped up by eager fans.[br][br]It took just four days to achieve the same level of sales in Japan, where the unit launched on December 2nd.[br][br]As we hone in on Christmas, the vast shipments of DS units are still struggling to satisfy demand - anecdotal evidence on Internet forums and discussion groups talk of widespread shortages, while major online retailers like Amazon.com are also having trouble acquiring stock.[br][br]Sony, meanwhile, having sold out its 200,000-unit launch allocation of PlayStation Portables in just one day in Japan, is aiming to have half a million available in the region before the end of the year - leaving it some way short of Nintendo's figures.[br][br]Both units have been well received by the media so far, with games like Super Mario 64 DS on Nintendo's side and Ridge Racers on the PSP earning high praise all round.

From what I neard, the DS has 4 megs of memory where you can download demos from nintendo onto it through Wifi.
Would it be possible for somebody to emulate the server the DS is supposed to connect to on his PC using WIFI and upload his own code into the DS?
Obviously you cant hack it since the DS dosent allow you to overwrite any of its programming, but you would be able to upload your own sample programs that way woudlent you?
Let me try to explain this easier for those that dont get it, since many seemed confused on other places where I posted this.
1. The DS can connect through WIFI (not the wireless link, I mean wireless internet) through your computer or router or whatever and eventually connects to Nintendo.
2. From there the DS can download demos and anything else Nintendo put online for the DS straight into itself for you to play demos or minigames (its similar to the Gamecube link of the GBA, except instead of the gamecube sending the GBA a mini program, Nintendo's internet site is sending the DS a mini program or game demo)
3. What im saying is that if you can make your computer minic the location of Nintendo's website (you would need to disconnect your computer from the internet to do that) when the DS tries to connect to Nintendo's website it would actually be connecting to your computer.
4. From then on you could possibly upload your OWN code/demo/emulator/whatever DS code onto the DS and run it on the DS.
Is this possible? What do you think?

Hey I just got a DS for Christmas ;D and I have a few questions about it
The DS I got is a Japanese one which is ok caus I managed to change the language to English but obviously the instruction book is all in Japanese. When I go on the download bit it says "looking for software to download" and it doesnt do anything after that. I'm guessing I have to be connected to the internet to do this but I don't know how :-/. I've read a lot of stuff about WiFi, what is this? And is this what I need to make the download thing work? Please help me caus I'm totally new at this.
Also, does anyone know if its posible to make a N64 emulator for the DS? That'd be so cool, but I'm not sure if it's possible.
Thanks!

i got my DS for christmas aswell... but it has developed a really irritating green tint at the bottom of the touch screen. I thought maybe it was magnetic interference from a loud speaker or somthing, i dont know what to do... my best idea was to take the battery out for a while but that didnt work.... any suggestions or shall i just phone nintendo? :-/
