The Nintendo 3DS has managed to equal the year one sales of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS, after just eight months.
"In sales through this past Saturday - 8 months - [the 3DS] has outsold the full 12 months of the original DS," Nintendo Of America president Reggie Fils-Aimes told Time.
"During that 12 months time, the original DS sold 2.37 million and we just surpassed that this past Saturday, so we've got real good momentum going into the holidays."
He also told the magazine that Super Mario 3D Land has brought a whole new range of consumers to the product.
Last month Fil-Aimes confirmed that the 3DS would soon be able to support paid DLC from publishers.

The 3DS's Virtual Console adds an extra layer of abstraction today, with the Game Boy port of the NES version of Adventure Island II (called, confusingly enough, "Adventure Island.") You can enjoy this Game Boy version of an NES game in a little Game Boy-looking window on your 3DS!
DSiWare features Double Bloob, a vertical shooter/puzzle game we first covered way back in 2007, years before there even was a DSiWare service. It's gone through a lot of changes since then, not the least of which was a departure of the development team from its former home at the infamous Nibris.

Nintendo has insisted that the Game Boy Advance games on offer to 3DS early adopters through the Ambassador Programme will be released this year.
The company's Spanish website said the ten free games, due as compensation for the global 3DS price drop in August, would be "available next year." Nintendo has since confirmed to ONM that the games will be released in 2011 as promised.
"The forthcoming ten GBA Virtual Console titles available for registrants of the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Programme will be available before the end of December 2011. We will make further announcements in due course."
Nintendo is still yet to confirm the full line-up, though it is known to include Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare Inc: Minigame Mania, andMario Vs. Donkey Kong. Reports have also claimed that Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, and Super Mario Bros 3: Super Mario Advance 4, will also be included.

One million UK sales. 13 No.1 chart positions this year alone. 10m fans worldwide. No, the game we’re talking about isn’t a Mario or a Zelda. Nor is it Call of Duty or FIFA. It’s not even from a Top Five publisher.
This year’s best-selling Wii title was Zumba Fitness from 505 Games. A release with a truly distinctive selling point that surprised as much as it succeeded, and one that proved there is plenty of life left in the ever-competitive fitness and dancing game genres.
“Zumba Fitness differs to other games on the market,” says 505’s general manager for UK and Export Ralph Pitt-Stanley. “It isn’t just a dance game, it’s a fun, interactive, social exercise experience that fuses contagious Latin and international rhythms together. This fun element has been captured in the game which resonates with the consumer and is the key reason for its success.”
It wasn’t just a single-format success either. The game regularly reached the Top Five in the separate Xbox 360 and PS3 games charts throughout the summer – a fact 505 is quick to point out. Not only did Zumba perform strongly, it dominated at a time when new releases are scarce, taking full advantage of the summer games lull with a point of difference perfect for non-gamers and Zumba fans.
Not content with one success, 505 is springing Zumba Fitness 2 onto store shelves today (Friday, November 25th), to capitalise on the Christmas and New Year period – a time that typically sees sales of fitness games and DVDs rocket.
A Kinect version of the game is also due early next year.
Pitt-Stanley adds: “Given the fact Zumba Fitness has been the No.1 selling Wii title of 2011, there is massive excitement at retail about the prospect of a second version
.“Zumba has sold the best part of 1m units and now the brand is back bigger and better than before. It has already proven itself an evergreen product that sells each and every week. This kind of excitement creates a fantastic prospect for the second game.”
Survival of the fittest
Of course, the success of Zumba Fitness partly comes down to the real life dancing phenomenon that has swept the globe, and 505 is happy to admit this.
The program, set up in the ‘90s, mixes easy-to-follow choreographies with international rhythms. By allowing class goers to party themselves into shape, Zumba has fast become a craze in recent years. It’s no longer only a type of dance class; it’s now its own brand. 12m people attend Zumba classes in 110,000 locations across 125 different countries. There’s probably one in your local gym.
“It’s a huge phenomenon which has taken the world by storm,” says Pitt-Stanley. “Already in the hearts and minds of thousands of women, the game was a natural progression and it too has grown as the brand itself has become even more popular. It perfectly complements a Zumba class.
“Zumba has such a wide appeal, ranging from kids, teenagers, mums and grandmothers. It has been these fans that have created the momentum for Zumba Fitness. They are amongst the most avid and loyal fans out there, wanting to consume all things Zumba starting with the class itself to the clothing through to the video game. The success of the game is down to the fans’ enthusiasm for the brand.
”These fans are obviously not your usual gamers. By this notion they may not face the decision of choosing one or two £40 games from 20 Christmas blockbusters – if they want more Zumba, they’ll opt for Fitness 2. And with its budget price tag they’ll be more likely to.
X Factor ads
505 officially announced the sequel in an X Factor TV advertisement last month to highlight the November 25th release date and the success of the original. It’s following this up with online activity throughout Christmas and beyond, with what Pitt-Stanley describes as a “highly targeted multimedia approach” and “high-profile TV commitment”.
He adds: “Zumba Fitness resonates with the lifestyle of the Zumba fans, so keeping fit during Christmas and beyond will be an important element for our campaign. You’ll see Zumba Fitness 2 in all of the must-have lists for Christmas across key women’s and mainstream publications. It really is the perfect Christmas stocking present.”
But if the original Zumba Fitness is anything to go by, 505’s new fitness title will be dancing up the charts well beyond Christmas and into the New Year.
RETAIL WORKOUT
MCV asks several top UK retailers how they expect Zumba Fitness 2 to perform
Andrew Thompson – Head of games, Asda
“Zumba Fitness has been a fantastic success for Asda in 2011, and has helped drive sales throughout the summer period. Zumba Fitness 2 is set to sell by the bucketload this Christmas and is the perfect product for the core Asda shopper – mums.”
Richard Thompson – Games buyer, HMV
“It’s great news and excellent timing that Zumba Fitness 2, successor to one of the best-selling Wii games of 2011, will be out before Christmas. The Zumba craze is getting bigger all the time, which should help provide a real commercial opportunity for the market as it enters peak trading.”
Nick Elliott – Owner, Barkman Computers
“We’re really looking forward to the release of Zumba Fitness 2. The first one performed incredibly well for us and the brand awareness is fantastic. We have a lot of real life Zumba classes running in our local area so adverts and flyers are all over town. I’m sure the second game will do equally well for us.”
Gurdeep Hunjan – Games buying manager, Sainsbury’s
“We are delighted that Zumba Fitness 2 is on the calendar this side of Christmas. After the tremendous success of the first this has to be a long-term banker. Fitness games this January should also be stronger than ever.”

The Wii U will appeal to a very different consumer than the Wii does today, Nintendo has said.Nintendo expects the Wii to sell well this Christmas, buoyed by The Legend of Zelda and a cheaper price point, US boss Reggie Fils-Aime told Time. The Wii U, however, will launch with a different price and games."The consumer buying Wii hardware today is going to be a different consumer than the one who will be buying Wii U in the future," Fils-Aime said."This is the first holiday that the Wii is available at $149.99 or below, so it's an expanded demographic we're reaching. These are consumers who have heard about Wii for the past couple years, but at $199 or $249 it was economically out of their reach."We haven't announced pricing for Wii U, but you can definitely expect that pricing is going to be different and that the games are going to be different."Despite this the Nintendo of America boss expects the Wii U, due out next year, to overlap with the Wii - and hopes Wii gamers will migrate to Wii U, which is backwards compatible."We do believe that Wii and Wii U will coexist for some time. As we drive the install base of Wii, we're really setting people up to take their gaming library and be able to transfer it over to Wii U."Meanwhile, Fils-Aime said Nintendo remains committed to the DS family of consoles, despite the strong push on 3DS.The DS, he said, now appeals to parents who wish to buy their young children their first console."We think the DS is going to sell well this holiday season," he said. "It's going to appeal to a different consumer. You can buy a DS Lite for $99. For a parent with a five or six year-old, maybe that's the first handheld you buy them. It's got a fantastic library of games - Super Mario Bros DS, Mario Kart DS - I think over 1400 games. I think it's a different kind of consumer than those who really want to experience the 3D of the 3DS.

Nintendo won't port Super Mario Galaxy 2 to the 3DS because Mario looks like a "speck" on the smaller handheld screen. The Japanese game maker explored the possibility as it was creating Super Mario 3D Land, which launched last month to critical and commercial acclaim - but quickly found the superb 2010 Wii platformer was inappropriate for the 3DS."When we started developing [Super Mario 3D Land], we displayed Super Mario Galaxy 2 on a small TV monitor and found that Mario looked like a speck and that the game was difficult to play," Super Mario 3D Land director Koichi Hayashida told IGN (via VG247)"This led us to look into the camera and terrain types that would be conducive to playing on a portable screen with a relatively large Mario. If we were making a console game, from the very start, we wouldn't have been thinking about any of those things, and I think the game would have probably been a lot different."Eurogamer's Super Mario 3D Land review returned a 9/10. It is the fastest-selling portable Mario game ever in the US.

The arrival of Wii U next year won't mean the death of the Wii, according to Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.
The exec told Time that Wii is still performing well, and reaching a new audience of gamers at its lowest price point to date."The consumer buying Wii hardware today is going to be a different consumer than the one who will be buying Wii U in the future," he said.
"This is the first holiday that the Wii is available at $149.99 or below, so it's an expanded demographic we're reaching. These are consumers who have heard about Wii for the past couple years, but at $199 or $249 it was economically out of their reach.
"We haven't announced pricing for Wii U, but you can definitely expect that pricing is going to be different and that the games are going to be different," Fils-Aime added.
"We do believe that Wii and Wii U will coexist for some time. As we drive the install base of Wii, we're really setting people up to take their gaming library and be able to transfer it over to Wii U."
The Wii, Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land each sold over half a million units in the US on Black Friday.

We previewed Hyperkin's SupaBoy back in the summer and loved the idea of toting 'round original SNES games without resorting to Ben Heck-style crafting. The handheld takes full-size cartridges, packs a 3.5-inch screen and a battery that's disappointingly rated for just two point five hours (best keep a power cable handy). It'll also double as a home console: there's an AV-out port and slots for two classic controllers for when you wanna kick it old-school. It's reportedly compatible with titles like Mario World, A Link to the Past and Starwing Starfox, but who needs them when we've got a mint condition copy of Tetris Attack at home? It'll cost you $80 and is available from Amazon as of yesterday -- we suggest you get to practicing blowing the dirt from the connectors, since you'll be doing a lot of it soon.

Nintendo has offered up a few new details about the forthcoming 3DS entry in its Animal Crossing franchise.A new developer roundtable discussion, posted to the US Nintendo Channel and reproduced below courtesy of YouTuber NintenDaan, sees series producer Katsuya Eguchi discuss the game's new features with its director Aya Kyogoku, design lead Koji Takahashi and veteran Nintendo sound director Kazumi Totaka.Among the revelations was news that this time out you'll play as the mayor, allowing greater control over how your town looks. Want to add some benches or streetlamps? Go nuts. You clearly can't handle all that hard work on your own though, so Nintendo has granted you a secretary called Shizu to help out."She's a little clumsy so I'm not sure how good of a job she can do," warned Kyogoku. The dimensions of the game's character models have been made a little more lifelike to better convey physical differences between the animals. It also means you'll have a greater array of character customisation options available to you."The big thing is that now there are separate tops and bottoms," explained Takahashi. "So girls can wear pants and boys... well..."Yes chaps, you can don a skirt should you so desire. There's more item customisation this time too, including a furniture shop where you can apparently design your own cushions. You can also tweak your home's exterior, with everything from fence posts to your mailbox now tweakable. The town has increased in size since the last game with new additions including a shopping mall on the opposite side of the train tracks. The beach is bigger too, and you can even go for a swim in the ocean.Nintendo have also included StreetPass features that let you exchange house designs with other players. These will be displayed in a 'model home' area at one end of the town.Surely the biggest bombshell of all though is news that reviled capitalist whip-cracker Tom Nook has left his store behind and got himself a new job. He's now the town's estate agent.Watch the whole clip below for new footage and a few more tidbits, including Totaka-san grabbing an acoustic guitar and playing things out with the game's new theme.Nintendo still hasn't put a release date on the follow up to Wii entry Animal Crossing: Let's Go To The City, but it's expected on shelves some time next year

Holy fu-nky chicken, Ubisoft announced this morning that Just Dance 3 sold 700,000 copies on the Wii and Xbox 360 over six days, between November 20 and 26 of the Black Friday shopathon. The company also stated that Just Dance 3 sales are up 48 percent from those of Just Dance 2, which launched in mid-October of 2010, when compared "year over year to date in the US."
Ubisoft also claimed it has 76 percent market share among dance games in 2011. That statistic could be a little messy, since unlike Zumba Fitness andDance Central, which has one sequel, the Just Dance franchise follows Activision's Guitar Hero model of suffocating saturation.
The Just Dance franchise currently includes: Just Dance 3, Just Dance 2, Just Dance, Just Dance Summer Party, Just Dance Kids 2, Just Dance Kids, Michael Jackson: The Experience, The Black Eyed Peas Experience and ABBA You Can Dance. All these titles combined sold over one million copies in the US during Black Friday week. The NPD previously stated that dance game sales are up 326 percent over last year.

In terms of new releases, the home consoles have started their winter hibernation - but there's still a war to be fought in your hand this week. Two massive format exclusives step up to make their host platforms' case for taking a spot under your Christmas tree.
I'm sure Apple is a long way from regarding Infinity Blade 2 as a killer app - it began life as a way to sell middleware, not hardware, after all. But there's no doubt that Chair's fantasy action game is a standard-bearer for gaming on iOS and the processing power of iPad 2 and iPhone 4/4S. It's pretty persuasive, too.
"On the newest devices that are packing A5 chips especially, the game shines with gorgeous lighting that spills through stained glass windows and washes over open courtyards. Sharper textures add even more detail to a world rich in tiny charms and architectural flair," Mark wrote in our Infinity Blade 2 review.
"For all that's new and improved, Infinity Blade 2 is still a game about high stakes combat and bloody perseverance. Still a game about fast and smart fight scenes bolstered by a personalised assortment of weapons and shiny hats."
It's a good game, but it's also the App Store's first big-budget, bells-and-whistles annual mega-sequel. It's hard to dispel a sense of déj* vu - and for all its charms, our game of the week isn't helping.
Mario Kart 7
This time last year, more or less, it was Sony slipping in under the wire before we closed the books on 2010 to prop up the fortunes of one of its formats with a the rushed release of a racing game. What a difference 12 months makes.
Sony's not out of hot water yet - frankly, in these deeply uncertain times for gaming, no-one is. But now Nintendo's run out of smug side-steps and has been pitched in with the rest.
But this is Nintendo, with its legendary quality control - and if it hadn't confessed that Mario Kart 7 was rushed to market as an emergency measure to save the 3DS, you'd never have known. Where Gran Turismo 5 stuttered and coughed into life with a day-one patch and a hobbled online mode, turn Mario Kart 7's ignition and you get a smooth purr. It's even got Nintendo's best stab at proper online integration to date
Mario Kart 7 easily has the potential to match GT5's sales, and could be just as crucial to the future of its format, if not more. It's also a racing game every bit as encumbered by tradition and expectation, with just as singular a focus (albeit a less monomaniacal and exhaustively ambitious leading light - Shigeru Miyamoto didn't even fancy adding customisation to it).
"Mario Kart is a classic formula, so often aped and never bettered," Simon Parkin wrote in our Mario Kart 7 review. "It's the inscrutable concoction of genius.
"Nintendo knows that to mess with the recipe is to risk losing the magic, a lesson learned in Double Dash's shift of focus away from taut racing to whimsy. So while the gliding and new power-ups may seem like bold moves, in practical terms they are conservative additions, precision-slotted into a cast-iron framework."
It's not the most exciting of Nintendo's trio of big releases this season, but perhaps it is the most significant. While Zelda: Skyward Sword makes a belated case for motion control in a traditional gaming framework and Super Mario 3D Land explores the possibilities of 3D display with EAD's trademark invention and wit, Mario Kart 7 is getting on with the dirty business of giving players what they want, when they want it, and with all the features that they expect in this day and age. It's an XP bar short of being a textbook 2011 franchise update (and with the coins-for-parts upgrade system, it's very nearly there).
In short, it's Nintendo behaving like every other publisher in mainstream gaming. That comes as a huge relief. Is it also a little bit sad? Maybe, but we can't have it both ways - and neither can Nintendo any more.

OpenBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
This release is for the Dreamcast, PSP, Wii, Wiz, GP2x and Dingoo:
Heres whats new;
r3619 | utunnels | 2011-12-03 07:12:24 -0500 (Sat, 03 Dec 2011) | 3 lines
Changed paths:
M /engine/openbor.c
Re-adjust enemy attack chance after playing some mods. When there are too many enemies on screen, their chance to attack is also lowered. Because the new ai patterns tend to swamp on the player, difficulty increases too much when there are more than 5 enemies.
Reduce the chance for the default grab. Previous logic will prevent the entity with a greater index from grabbing another with a smaller index when they are both walking.

via http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/DSblog.html
The only big improvement regarding DS2x86 I have achievent since the last blog post, is that I have managed to get the AdLib audio emulation working. The AdLib audio emulation now runs fully on the ARM7 processor also in DS2x86, using the exact same code as in the original DSx86. Only the data transfer system is different (and it is actually still just a quick hack, until I get the whole MIPS-to-NDS transfer system redone). The primary goal for this enhancement was to make sure that the ARM7 audio system does run normally and that it is possible to handle the AdLib emulation on it.
I am currently working on the transfer system restructuring. I began by removing code that seemed non-essential, checking that the system still works, then removing some more code, and so on. It is nice to see how the plugin size gets smaller and smaller, with no change in the behaviour. There is actually A LOT of unneeded code and handshaking for the card interface. I'm not sure if much of it is there simply as a leftover from the early experimenting by SuperCard, or if there are some situations where all of that is needed. Almost none of it seems to be needed in DS2x86, though.
I have a long weekend to work on DS2x86, as next Tuesday is the Independence Day of Finland, and I also took the Monday off from work. I hope to be able to finish the new simplified transfer system during this time, so that I can then continue adding all the required functionality to take advantage of the new transfer system. It still looks like the new transfer system will be MUCH better than the original used by the DSTwo SDK. The only frustrating thing with the new system is the fact that I have spent a year fighting with the original SDK! During all that time the possibility to properly use the available hardware features existed, but SuperCard just did not make that available! Well, better late than never, I suppose.

GameBoy Online (2011/12/03) is released. GameBoy Online is a Game Boy and GameBoy Color emulator written in Javascript. It strives to be efficient and try to have a perfect compatibility. Currently the execution speed is not optimal even on browsers. For example on Chrome, which is nevertheless deemed to run Javascript faster on a PC running Windows 7 64-bit version with a double heart 2 CPUs at 2.2 GHz, games run at normal speed but almost skipping some frames.
The sound production is still experimental and rather poor quality. The video portion is by HTML5 or by creating images with BMP string URI. State backups are implemented using the object window.localStorage and are serialized / deserialized JSON. Ditto for backup SRAM.

Dolphin Git 3.0-221 is released. This is the trunk of Dolphin Project. Dolphin is the first Gamecube emulator able to run commercial games! Dolphin is a great Gamecube(NGC) and Wii emulator. It has a partial Wii support and plays most Gamecube games. Dolphin has been changed SVN to Git recently.
Dolphin Git changelog:
* Do not fail with strict drivers when compiling a not SM2.0 shader
To enforce SM2.0 compatibility, the OpenGL plugin was made to crash when compiling a shader which does not fit in the SM2.0a limits. However, on some combinations of OS/drivers/GPU, our shaders already do not fit in these limits, causing artificial failures only to try to keep a non existant SM2.0a compat.
Basically, this sucks.
This commit increases the artificial limit to SM3.0. If you're using a GPU which does not support SM3.0 and Dolphin works properly, this should not cause any problem at all.

Fceux SVN r2365 is released. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.
Fceux SVN changelog:
r2363
fceux-server: fix build errors for BSD
r2364
fceux-server: switch to unix endlines

Glitch64 SVN r270 is released. GlideHQ is a realtime texture enhancer library with hi-resolution texture pack support for Glide64. Glitch64 is the recommended Glide3x wrapper for Glide64, the Glide video plugin for N64 emulators. It currently supports S3TC texture compression, anisotropic filtering, widescreen resolutions and simulates almost all the Glide3x hardware capabilities used by the plugin, included texture buffer capability (needed for render to texture). It is coded using the OpenGL API and uses GLSL shaders.
Traditional and non-traditional techniques have been used to achieve speed and high image quality even on a 9 year old 3Dfx Voodoo2. Although the 3Dfx Glide3x texture format naming conventions are used, the library can be expanded for generic use. The library supports 6 enhancers and 6 image filters. FXT1 and S3TC texture compression are supported.
Glitch64 SVN changelog:
r270
Fix Issue 282: Fullscreen switching uses wrong resolution cause switch back issue

A brand new version of the SNES MYTH MENU has been released which includes 2 major updates : Original cart rom & sram dumping directly to the SD card by just plugging your cart into the back of the SNES Myth!
Full release changelog- Cart dumping support. You can dump the contents of the bootcart (the one that you plug into the back of the SNES Myth) to the SD card. I've verified that it works for ROM, and should hopefully work for SRAM as well. (See the readme for more info, because you need to put some files on the SD card for this to work.)
- Added key-repeat. If you hold up/down for about half a second it will start repeating keypresses until you release the button.
- Modified the timing in the VGM player a bit.

And here we thought Nintendo commissioned the real-life Mario Kart kart just so its existence could perpetually tease us forever. In fact the real reason is so some lucky person out there could own this thing; a GameStop patron to be exact.
The kart will be given to a select PowerUp Rewards member. Eligible members simply need to purchase or trade something in during the month of December to be entered into the drawing, either in-store or online. Good luck, because nothing really ties the living room together like a giant, life-sized Mario Kartprop.
... What? You would put it in the garage? Psh.

I just updated my 3DS, and other users are reporting that they've been asked to do so as well. This is the delayed "November update" meant to add DLC capabilities, 3D video recording, and more.
Looking around my system, I see a new "Nintendo Zone" app for interfacing with "participating locations," to receive special content from certain free wi-fi hotspots. The "3DS Camera" app now has a toggle for video or stills, and -- most unexpected of all -- there are new "accomplishments" (achievements, kind of) in the StreetPass Mii Plaza. A few popped up immediately upon starting the app (above). You can see them all in a list within the Mii Plaza. I have 20 total (!) relating to the number and location of the people I've met.
Other new stuff in the StreetPass Mii Plaza includes a music player for Mii Plaza music, new Find Mii stuff (Find Mii 2 game and lots of new hats, accessible only to those who have all the hats from the first game), new Puzzle Swap puzzles, and even some kind of new SpotPass connectivity, to bring Miis into your Plaza from the internet. I'm not sure how this works yet.
Though the eShop was down all day in preparation for this update, I didn't see anything new there yet -- except for a news item about the 3D video update.

Maybe you want to give a new 3DS owner a headstart on filling out their collection. Or maybe you want to justify your own continued Wii ownership. Whatever the reason, you can be sure a ton of holiday shopping will include games and accessories for Nintendo platforms.
Allow us to help you guide your shopping, so that you don't enter the store in a fugue state and come out with 12 copies of Food Network: Cook or be Cooked. We'll help you find the best stuff from the last year. Just click the links below to jump to the section of your choice, or head past the break for everything.
3DS
Super Mario 3D Land ($39.96)
If you're a Mario player from way back, this will feel both familiar and new to you. It's a clever blend of 3D Mario design and perspective with 2D Mario-style stage layouts. It's also wonderful for bite-sized play sessions.
Mario Kart 7 ($39.99)
Everybody likes Mario Kart. You like Mario Kart. Even if you hate Mario Kart, you'll get hooked on it. This one has some nice online play, allowing you to lose to all your friends even when they aren't within taunting distance.
Cave Story 3D ($39.99)
This version of the classic Cave Story is ideal for people who don't identify as "retro" gamers, as it has fancy new graphics that disguise it as a new game. It's also great for people who want to see a familiar game in a new way. The important thing is that every single person should have a copy of Cave Story.
Bit Trip Saga ($39.95, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
Also in the "everyone should own" department: a collection of Gaijin Games' inventive, beautiful, rhythm explorations of the evolution of games. It's ... entirely likely you or your gift recipient failed to get these on WiiWare, so here they are in a nice portable format!
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition ($18.58)
If you're able to live without an arcade stick, you'll find a clever port of the industry-standard fighting game here, one that can be played with distant friends anywhere there's a wi-fi signal.
Dead or Alive Dimensions ($25.23)
The single-player mode is loaded with absolutely hilarious, freeze-frame cutscenes. Take that as a plus or minus according to your own preferences. But regardless of that presentation, the story mode in this game is the best fighting game training sequence ever designed.
Pilotwings Resort ($34.98)
A nice, mellow plane or jetpack ride around Nintendo's Wuhu Island is a good way to familiarize yourself with the 3DS. At least, it's mellow until you start getting into the later challenges.
Star Fox 64 3D ($37.99, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
Pixeljunk developer Q-Games updated the Nintendo 64 game with new graphics and new gyro controls. And, necessarily, the ability to put the whole thing in your pocket.
Nintendogs + Cats ($32.87 - $34.41)
Cute puppies and kind of cute, kind of uncanny-valley-ish kittens living inside your 3DS. If you're in the "people who like puppies" demographic, this is probably something you'll enjoy in short sessions. If you're not in that demographic, get the hell off of our website, creepo.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D bundle ($199.99)
Look at it! Look at it.
Power Pak+/Charge Base ($14.39/$19.00)
If you ever decide to use your 3DS as, like, a portable system ... out of your house ... you'll probably need one of these. If you have the extra scratch, it's nice to have the Charge Base for drop-in charging, but it's not necessary.
Wii
Pro Pack Mini Plus ($29.96-$40.83)
If you want Skyward Sword, but don't plan to pick up the hardware bundle, why not get one of these smaller Wii Remote Plus controllers? It's a lot more comfortable for the epic journey between the A and +/- buttons.
Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure ($65.98 - infinity)
The Wii was the lead platform on this cute, collectible-laden game, so it's not a bad way to experience it at all. A bad way to experience it, we think, would be anywhere near a child, in a toy store. That would be a bad, expensive way to experience Skylanders.
Donkey Kong Country Returns ($43.99)
Yes, this is from last year, but you didn't buy it, did you? Even if you did, you know somebody who didn't. Buy it.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword ($49.99-$69.99)
What are you doing with a Nintendo system if you aren't even a little interested in Zelda? Or in motion controls? This is a Zelda game, with cool motion controls. And for twenty bucks more (if you can find it) you can get a fancy gold Wii Remote Plus to enhance the experience ... of looking at your hand while playing.
Rayman Origins ($45.98)
A delightful 2D platformer with co-op co-interference that will remind you of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. But with more slapping.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land ($49.99)
It's a simplistic platformer that keeps the player overpowered at all times, but it's also adorable, and perfect as an introduction to Kirby for kiddos.
DS
Dragon Quest 6: Realms of Revelation ($24.80)
Take all the time you have for other games, and spend it recruiting monsters, leveling up in a variety of jobs, and traveling between a dream world and the "real" Zenithia.
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 ($34.99)
Oh, your favorite part of DQ6 was the monster collecting? Well, how about a whole game about recruiting and training Slimes, Drackies, and other monsters from the RPG series? It's a Pokemon-type adventure in which you can capture, train, and even combine 300 monsters.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($14.11)
Combining unique puzzle mechanics and an unmatchedly odd story, Ghost Trick is an experience like no other. We can't seem to say anything about it that doesn't reference its singular nature. And sadly, given the sales, it'll likely remain singular.
Solatorobo: Red the Hunter ($33.30)
Developer CyberConnect2 indirectly recalls Mega Man Legends and directly recalls its own Tail Concerto with a classic action-RPG adventure. As adventurer Red Savarin, you go from floating island to floating island, taking on any quest you and your bipedal robot can complete.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter ($29.99)
It's a pretty safe bet as to whether you'll like this: if you a) liked any previous Layton game, or b) like puzzles even a little, you'll like Last Specter. As a nice bonus, once you've completed the atmospheric puzzle adventure (or while you're playing it), you have the London Life RPG to get lost in.
Aliens: Infestation ($29.99, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
Meet a bunch of newly invented Colonial Marines as you attempt (and mostly fail) to survive against xenomorphs, robots, and other threats aboard the Sulaco. It's equally great for Aliens fans and people who love a good Metroidvania.
Kirby Mass Attack ($29.99, currently eligible for buy one, get one half off)
This is the kind of bizarre experiment we've come to expect from Kirby -- a side-scrolling action RTS in which you control ten adorable puffballs at once.
Domo Starter Kit for DSi ($24.46)
Your DSi doesn't look like Domo-kun? What's that about?

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently held a state of the union with Japanese newspaper Nikkei (via Andriasang) for the company's performance in its home country. Mario Kart 7, which launched on December 1, has done quite well. In its first week on retail shelves, the game sold a whopping 420,000 copies, almost double the first-week performance sales of Mario Kart DS back in 2005. And, according to Iwata, the game did even better abroad, though we kinda already knew that.
Despite suffering through a lackluster launch, Nintendo's latest handheld is set to reach the three million sold mark two weeks faster than the original DS did, Iwata said. Thanks, price cut! He expects the 3DS to hit four million before its one year anniversary on February 26.

Handheld raises its game with strong sales rush ahead of holiday season
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes the 3DS is about to cross the 3m sales mark in Japan and will reach a 4m milestone by April.
Speaking to Nikkei, as translated by Andriasang, Iwata (pictured) said the 3DS “has regained its vigour” thanks to the price drop and major new releases such as Mario Kart 7 hitting shelves.
The racer sold 420,000 units in its first week in Japan – double that of the DS version.

Nintendo has acknowledged the existence of a game-breaking bug in The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
According to Zelda Informer, the company has acknowledged that completing parts of the Song Of The Hero quest in a certain order means the other parts don't trigger as normal.
"We have been made aware of the issue that results in being unable to progress in the Song Of The Hero quest," reads an email Nintendo is sending to users who have notified them of the bug. "If the game has been saved after completing the sequence of events, it will no longer be possible to proceed through the game on that save file.
"The only options at that point are to either start the game over or to use an earlier save file to continue. The situation is caused by performing the following sequence of events:- At the beginning of the quest, go to Lanayru Desert to retrieve the song of the Thunder Dragon.
- In the Lanayru Mine, speak with Golo The Goron.
- Complete the Thunder Dragon's event, and receive his song.
- Before heading to the forest or volcano regions, speaking with Golo in the mine again.
- At this point, the forest and volcano events will no longer occur, making it impossible to continue."
There's no other fix available - you'll just have to make sure you complete the quest in a different order, or use multiple save files. Nintendo does, however, say it is "documenting all feedback."

The studio behind the hit Cooking Mama series says 3DS will pick up momentum now kids games are coming.
The firm blames the portable’s early struggles on a lack of software for the younger demographic. But now it says the games are coming – including its own title Cooking Mama 4.
“There hasn’t been many kids games on 3DS as such,” president and CEO of Cooking Mama Limited Takeshi Nagashima told MCV. “In Japan there are more adult games than kids’ ones. The hardware price was also horrendously expensive. But the software was not built for the kids market.“
However, the prices have come down, and Nintendo is coming up with the software as well. We expect 3DS’ market share will start to expand accordingly.”
Nagashima’s comments came as 3DS sales have started to spike on the back of Super Mario 3D Land. The Nintendo game’s release caused a surge in sales in Japan and the US. 3DS console sales rose 49 per cent in the US following the release of Mario 3D Land and spiked again over Black Friday.
There’s still another blockbuster to come for 3DS, in the form of Mario Kart 7, which reaches UK shelves today (December 2nd).

Zumba Fitness 2 will receive a big post-release push to ensure the title sells strongly in the New Year.
The Wii fitness game from 505 has already received a splash of marketing activity. An X Factor TV ad in late October announced the sequel’s release, while TV spots have been running since around Xtra Factor on ITV2.
Publisher 505 is following this up with support during the semi-final of The X Factor on ITV, which airs this weekend. This will be backed by further ads on satellite and terrestrial TV channels.
Zumba 2 will also appear in must-have Christmas lists in women’s and mainstream publications such as Zest, Look and Woman, and online sites including What Culture and Stick Fingers.
“The high saturation of female programming at this time means the UK’s biggest show [X?Factor] will perfectly complement Zumba’s target audience,” 505’s senior product manager Juliette Green told MCV.
“Social media will also support PR efforts across some of the biggest online sites to further communicate that this video game really is the perfect Christmas stocking present.”
505 will hope Zumba 2 emulates the success of the original game, with a fresh marketing push running into 2012. Zumba Fitness became the top-selling Wii title in the UK this year after topping the weekly GfK Chart-Track Top 40 on 13 occasions.
“We’ve taken key learnings into Zumba 2 and are confident of similar success second time around,” Green added. “The perceived need to get fit after Christmas will also be an important element for our ongoing campaign for Zumba 2, with additional promotional, PR, online and TV support in the New Year and beyond.”

UK shops are reporting a sharp increase in 3DS sales.
Sources on the High Street have told MCV that the Metallic Red edition is all but sold out, with other colours also in short supply.
It follows a surge in popularity for the machine, driven by two new Mario games and a price cut.
Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are both now available – the latter debuted at No.8 in this week's Chart-Track Top 40. Both games have been supported by a significant marketing drive, with TV ads appearing around prime time TV shows.
"We have high expectations for the final few weeks before Christmas," said GAME Group's category manager for Nintendo Iain Johnson.

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator and producer of the Zelda and Mario franchises among other works, is stepping down at Nintendo. After personally managing Nintendo's blockbuster franchises for ~20 years, Miyamoto said today: 'What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself. Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.'"Update: 12/08 21:35 GMT by T : Note that Nintendo is careful to say that this is not retirement, even if Miyamoto's role at Nintendo changes.

Nintendo brings another original, downloadable 3DS game to the eShop, inspiring ... not quite cautious optimism, but a cautious lessening of pessimism. Intelligent Systems' Pushmo is a puzzler about pulling stacked 3D blocks into and out of the screen to make climbing paths. It makes sense for a puzzle game on 3DS!
On WiiWare, we finally have the opportunity to try out RedLynx's MotoHerozwithout paying $15 for the privilege.

Christmas stocks of the 3DS will meet an increasing public demand for Nintendo's handheld device, UK shops have told Eurogamer.Multiple high street chains have reported a rise in 3DS hardware sales, likely due to the recent release of Nintendo stalwarts Mario and Mario Kart. But retailers consider the 3DS unlikely to sell out, despite the fact that some colours might become "limited".High street heavyweight Game told Eurogamer it had plenty of stock available for both Game and Gamestation. The retailer does not expect the console to sell out, although certain colours may be "limited" in some stores, depending on "local demand".HMV is "not aware" of any shortages, despite 3DS sales "definitely picking up in recent days"."Whilst it's possible that certain colours are likely to prove limited, customers should be able to find at least one of the versions in our stores and online," HMV's Head of Games Tim Ellis told Eurogamer.Supermarket giant Sainsbury's said it had seen "an increase in sales - as expected - in the run up to Christmas". Currently it has good stock of all 3DS consoles and colours, although warned that the Flame Red colour "may run low" nearer Christmas.Meanwhile, Morrisons reported seeing "a sharp increase in demand" for the 3DS, but reassured customers the chain had "adequate stocks" to meet this.

Nintendo's much-derided 3DS Circle Pad Pro accessory has a beefy battery life of 480 hours, according to the device's manual (posted online by Andriasang). That's about 100 times longer than the console itself. The 3DS Circle Pad add-on bestows a second analogue slider and extra shoulder buttons on the handheld. It requires a single AAA battery to run.Having 480 hours of battery life should placate gamers concerned at the need to use a screwdriver to access the device's battery compartment. The 3DS Circle Pad Pro is available in Japan this weekend with Monster Hunter Tri G and launches on 27th January in Europe alongside Resident Evil: Revelations.

Know what could save you from that inevitable bout of holiday travel-induced rage? Free WiFi on your 3DS, that's what. Let's be real, you and a few million others are about to be stuck waiting on a tarmac somewhere or suffocating in a boarding area throng of weary travelers. So, if you've got Nintendo's latest portable handy, you'll at least have a free internet connection to latch onto, courtesy of Boingo. The company's recently announced an agreement with the Big N to make its service free of charge to users across 42 of our nation's airports. You'll be able to take advantage of the gratis goods once your console receives a scheduled firmware update, due to roll out today. Now if that doesn't get you in a festive spirit, you're probably just a mean, green 'ol Grinch -- or a PSP owner.

Shigeru Miyamoto has personally addressed reports suggesting he plans to retire from Nintendo.
His latest comments were made following seemingly misinterpreted statements featured in an interview with Wired earlier this week. The Mario and Zelda creator is said to have told the Wall Street Journal that he is very healthy and isn't planning to retire any time soon.
He said through a translator: "We have to construct the structure so that the organisation... can make it without me.
"I should also admit that it might be better without me; I mean that a different approach and different talent might emerge, though I shouldn't dwell on this because then the article might indeed say 'Mr. Miyamoto is thinking about retiring,' because that is not the case."
Miyamoto also urged consumers to try 3DS now that flagship games Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land are out.
"We were often asked, 'What can you do with the 3DS?' and it was difficult for us to explain in words," he said. "Now we have Super Mario 3D Land and all we have to say is, 'Please try it, and you'll see what the 3DS entails.'"
The legendry designer reportedly acknowledged that both Mario games should have been available for the 3DS at launch.

In what many gamers will say is a long overdue move, Club Nintendo is to begin offering free games in exchange for Nintendo coins.
Coins are earned when consumers purchase a Nintendo or select third party title for Wii, DS or 3DS. A user can exchange them against Nintendo’s catalogue at any time, though the selection is more often than not crammed with throw away items such as wallpapers or cheap collectibles.
From time to time decent gifts will show up – such as the thoroughly brilliant SNES-style Classic Wii controller – but this is the first time that games have been offered.
CVG spotted the news via a splash page on US Club Nintendo site, though it has since been taken down.
The titles being offered included Super Mario Kart on the Wii’s Virtual Console or a 3D version of Xevious for the 3DS. Both were priced at 100 coins.
It’s unknown if the offer will be replicated outside of the US.
The European Club Nintendo store currently allows users to swap coins for Nintendo’s digital currency.

For a while I’ve been hopeful that more people will see the depth that 3DS has to offer. I don’t mean the 3D display – because, in many ways, that’s been a bit of a red herring. I mean the genuine potential that a high-powered Nintendo handheld can deliver.
3DS is packed with clever features.Just take StreetPass. David Yarnton at E3 encouraged me to wander the Nintendo stand to collect StreetPass hits on the off chance I snatched Satoru Iwata’s elusive Mii; crossing anonymous gamers on the Tube and swapping Mario 3D Land times and achievements has been one of my most enjoyed extra-curricular games activities all year.
They are just two of the cheeky, innovative challenges that even the most risqué iPhone games haven’t managed.
Now, with software worth playing to match the hardware, we’re seeing sales seriously pick up. It was the best-selling device last week.
Here’s hoping momentum carries through to Christmas and beyond. Retailers want that to happen. Third-parties also – and Sony too, I reckon (because if Nintendo can’t sell a handheld that has two exciting Mario games with it, the handheld games device market really is in trouble).
HAS?PRICE?CUTTING?GONE?TOO?FAR?
I don’t have the answer to that question, but there’s plenty going on to suggest this question needs one.
As we go to press, Gamestation announced a deal that halves the cost of Skyrim. It’s just the tip of the iceberg in a year that has seen games come in expensive for day one and plummet in price by week five. In many cases these games are shipped in with agreements to slash prices – buyers and sales execs have been doing these deals for years. But this year it’s happened to almost every game.
£20 for Elder Scrolls, which you can see in the November charts published this week has done incredibly well, or £10 for Deus Ex, one of the better games released this year. Won’t this do more harm than good as time goes on?
DON’T FORGET TO TUNE IN
Next Monday’s Young Apprentice final focuses on video games. Lord Sugar charges his young would-be entrepreneurs with making their own games, and the best wins his backing.
I don’t know who wins, but I do know this: you should tune in. One segment summons the collective intelligence of UK games personnel (and some from MCV) to watch the young designers’ pitches.
And the games themselves are good. If the finale matches the content, the episode will be an early Xmas present for the UK industry: good PR when there’s more eyeballs on us than ever.

Now that Nintendo's 3DS slide pad is hitting shelves in Japan, it appears that Mr. Blurrycam managed to get in on one owner's early unboxing. Glance at the contents strewn about above and you'll notice what looks to be a copy of Monster Hunter, the secondary joystick-adding peripheral itself and an included wrist strap. According to Andriasang, the owner reports that the add-on is stated to last a whopping 480 hours on its single AAA battery (for the unit itself), which makes the thought of dealing with its screw-secured compartment sting a bit less. Folks in the US will still have to wait until February 7th to experience the slide pad for themselves, but in the meantime, you can hit the source links below for more insight.

davebaol , to whom we owe the famous successor to the cIOS of Waninkoko, has finally officially the new version 7. The changelog is quite big, we note many improvements in the support of the NAND emulation (backups, WiiWare, etc. .)... single subscriber absent: the new EHCI module (which should improve the compatibility of HDD) , which should arrive later. Care should be taken to download d2x cIOS Installer 3.1 , install it in apps ( apps/d2x-cios-installer ) and decompress the d2x V7 Final in / apps/d2x-cios-installer (which must ciosmaps.xml overwrite the file). The installer is ready to be run from HBC to install the latest version. It is also possible to generate the WAD installer with mii-Mod, then install with Wad Manager (or equivalent). The less anxious can wait next version of d2x cios Installer, which, it is highly likely, should include this new cIOS shortly. d2x cIOS V7 Final Archive already prepared, containing the installer and the cIOS: cios d2x d2x cIOS Installer 3.1 + V7 Final Official site: http://code.google.com/p/d2x-cios/

GBAtemp member Xflak has updated ModMii, the all-purpose Windows application for your Wii, from version 4.8.1 to 4.8.2. See below for the change logs, and be sure to check out the on-going discussion for the download and instructions on how to use the wide variety of functions this Wii utility has to offer.
QUOTE: Current Features•It can download all the files necessary to Modify, Upgrade & Downgrade your Wii System Menu.
•Download individual IOS/cIOS files, Official Wii Channels, System Menus, Multi Mod Manager, YAWMM, Dop-Mii, both versions of Bannerbomb, Hackmii Installer etc.
•Install patched IOSs without an wifi connection on your Wii
This includes an easy to follow Custom guide to setting up a USB-Loader (including how to format/partition your external hard drive)
•Install SNEEK, build emulated NANDs, and Batch Extract WiiGamcube Games for use with SNEEK+DI or UNEEK+DI
•Customize Bootmii, Wad Manager and MMM start-up settings using ModMii Configurators to create a custom config files
This is also capable of building many different System Menu Themes (csm's and themed SM Wads) using the appropriate 000000**.app for your system menu (also applies to emulated NANDs)
•Provides solutions for the upside-down homebrew channel and the HackMii installer No Vulnerable IOS problems
•Advanced Custom Downloads Feature will allow you to easily patch and change the slot/version of IOSs/cIOSs. It can also build 3 different types of forwarder dol's and iso's (only use this feature if you know what you are doing!!)
QUOTE: Change Log v4.8.2 (12/05/11)•Synced ModMii's internal version of d2x v7-final with the revised v7-final on the google code page. No major changes, just "Tagged as d2x-v7".
•I think he is a she, and she is changelog.
Change Log v4.8.1 (12/04/11)
•Added a lot more info to NAND\nandinfo.txt when building\modifying emulated
NANDs. Also, now after building\modifying emulated NANDs ModMii will open
nandinfo.txt using notepad.
•Updated nswitch channel to v1.0 - old versions will be detected and updated
by ModMii's Emulated NAND Modifier. With this version of the channel installed
it is possible to launch UNEEK and UNEEK+DI without an SD Card.
•Updated Priiloader v0.4 to v0.7 neek2o mod in ModMii's emulated NAND
builder\Modifier. This version of Priiloader will not freeze when installed
to emulated NANDs.
•Updated Priiloader Hacks (Download Page 2) to include both hacks.ini and
hacks_hash.ini. Both files are copied to emulated NANDs when installing
Priiloader.
•Enhanced ModMii's Emulated NAND Modifier region\firmware detection by having
it read from NAND\content\title.tmd. As a result the Emulated NAND modifier
is now able to install\remove Priiloader to\from all firmwares (instead of
just 4.1-4.3). However, system menu theme installations are still limited
to 4.1-4.3.
•Replaced the Homebrew Filter Channel with Postloader when building emulated
NANDs. There are now two Postloader downloads on ModMii's Download Page 2,
a forwarder channel and an autoupdating download for the app itself.
•Changed default NAND folder naming when building new emulated NANDs so that
they are also compatible with Postloader. Instead of /nands/nand# now they
will be named /nands/pl_eu for euro/pal NANDs, /nands/pl_us for USA NANDs,
/nands/pl_jp for JAP NANDs and /nands/pl_kr for Korean NANDS.
•Users are once again asked to provide a serial number when building emulated
NANDs instead of always using the default serial number. This change was
reversed after discovering that if on the first boot of an emulated NAND the
serial number is not the same as the real NAND it MAY prevent establishing
an internet connection.
•d2x cIOSs updated from v6 to v7. The d2x v7 final changelog can be found here:
http://code.google.c.../Changelog.txt.
Thanks davebaol for all your hard work on this!
•Enhanced d2x beta support. Now when accessing the d2x beta menu it will list
all the d2x versions hosted on the d2x-google code page as well as identify
which are featured at that point in time. These are listed in addition to any
'offline' beta d2x cIOSs you may have manually saved to ModMii's
Support\More-cIOSs\ folder.
•Added d2x-beta-md5-updater.bat to ModMii's Support folder. This will mainly
be used by davebaol to facilitate his construction of d2x beta zip archives
that are compatible with both ModMii and the d2x cIOS Installer. With this
change all future d2x beta cIOSs will be released simultaneously for both
installation methods. On a personal note, it was a pleasure collaborating
with davebaol on this.
•Reverted back to using MMM, IOS236 Installer and Priiloader v0.7 (236 Mod)
instead of WiiMod (with ahbprot) and Priiloader v0.7 (with davebaol's
ahbprot bug-fix). This was due to WiiMod harmlessly failing to load in
certain uncommon situations. I have prepared an alternate version of
ModMii v4.8.1 that still uses WiiMod so anyone interested in helping jskyboo
beta test WiiMod please get in touch with jskyboo or myself. WiiMod is still
available for download on ModMii's Download Page 2.
•Updated Wii Backup Manager to Wii Backup Manager 0.4.5 build 78.
•Fixed bug where an older version of SaveGame Manager GX was being downloaded
instead of the latest version (this was due to a change in how the files were
being hosted on its google code page).
•Adjustments made to Syscheck Updater to support additional acceptable SysCheck
logs (i.e. MIOS v10, cIOS222 and cIOS223). It will now also check if d2x-beta
cIOSs are installed when a d2x beta cIOS is activated (instead of always
checking for the d2x version included with ModMii).
•Some optimizations when running ModMii in command line mode. Added a command
to install an extra folder of WADs to an emulated nand. I don't think anyone
is using this feature anyways so this isn't big news.
•Celebrities may walk on the red carpet, but ModMii walks on toilet paper
because it's the SH*T!
•Other minor changes

Looking for a way to take those youtube 3D vids, that new Japanese ummm well you get the idea, and other 3D vids and play them back correctly on your 3DS? GBAtemp member and Homebrew developer Spinal has a solution. It turns out that it is just a simple matter of reencoding using a tool called ffmpeg. For more information be sure to check the spoiler below or head on over to Spinal's project post.
How To
1. Download or rip your 3D video (youtube has millions of them by now)
2. Download ffmpeg.
3. run the ffmpeg with the following options (assuming that your video is called "video.avi")
If your 3D video is top-bottom format -
CODEffmpeg -y -i "video.avi" -s 400x480 -aspect 2:1 -r 20 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 1 -vf crop=480:240:0:0 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 96k -ac 2 "left.avi"ffmpeg -y -i "video.avi" -s 400x480 -aspect 2:1 -r 20 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 1 -vf crop=400:240:0:240 -an "right.avi"
if your 3D video is side-by-side format -
CODEffmpeg -y -i "video.avi" -s 800x240 -aspect 2:1 -r 20 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 1 -vf crop=400:240:0:0 -acodec libmp3lame -ar 44100 -ab 96k -ac 2 "left.avi"ffmpeg -y -i "video.avi" -s 800x240 -aspect 2:1 -r 20 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 1 -vf crop=400:240:400:0 -an "right.avi"
After a short time, you should have "left.avi" and "right.avi". It is now safe to move continue...
note - if the filesize is too large, you can adjust the quality by changing the "-qscale 1" to a different number, 1 - best, 31 = worst.
4. run ffmpeg with the following options to create the final movie file...
CODEffmpeg -y -i "left.avi" -i "right.avi" -vcodec copy -acodec adpcm_ima_wav -ac 2 -vcodec copy -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -map 1:0 "VID_0001.AVI"
You can change "VID_0001.AVI" to a different filename if you like, but it must be LLL_NNNN.AVI to show up on the 3DS.
Once that's done, copy it to the folder on your SD card that all of your photos are stored in and view it in the photo viewer.
*update Some people wanted a 2D version also, so here it is, just a single step for the 2D version
CODEffmpeg -i "video.avi" -s 400x240 -aspect 2:1 -r 20 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 1 -acodec adpcm_ima_wav -ac 2 "VID_0001.AVI"

via http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/DSblog.html
For the past week I have been working on the new transfer system for the DSTwo SDK. The current status is that some of the graphics (TEXT, CGA and MCGA) work, AdLib audio works, and keyboard and touchpad handling works using the new transfer system. I am currently working on getting the SoundBlaster digitized audio working, as that is the most challenging data to transfer.
The original transfer system of the SDK is driven by the MIPS side, so that the MIPS side sends an interrupt to the ARM side whenever it has some data to send, and the ARM side then sends commands and requests data from the MIPS side. My new system works in a completely opposite way, the MIPS side does no transfers unless the ARM side requests data from it. The basic idea of the new transfer system is this:- Both the ARM and MIPS processors start running their code at about the same time. Both sides perform their initialization work etc.
- The ARM side hooks into IRQ_CARD_LINE interrupt signal and begins waiting for an interrupt on that line.
- The MIPS side sends an interrupt to the ARM side as the last operation of the initialization routine, immediately before it calls the user's main() function. This allows the ARM side to proceed.
- The ARM side sends command 0xC5, which contains the current Real Time Clock values and works just like in the original SDK. The MIPS side receives this command in the cmd_line_interrupt handler and stores the RTC values into variables, for later use.
- The ARM side waits for VBlank interrupt, the MIPS side runs the CPU emulation.
- The ARM side sends command 0xC2 at every other VBlank interrupt (in the future I hope to make this selectable for 15/30/60fps screen refresh rate, but for now it is fixed to 30fps). This command was originally used in the SDK for sending audio data. In my new system the command parameters contain the current key and touchpad status, RTC seconds value, and a flag byte.
- The MIPS side interrupt handler then sends the current palette data, current configuration state, and AdLib buffer data in the first 1024-byte block. It also tells the FPGA to send data_line_interrupt when the FPGA FIFO becomes empty.
- The ARM side reads this whole 1024-byte block (where the configuration status contains the current graphics mode, for example), and goes to the appropriate screen blitting routine to wait for the MIPS side to send the actual graphics data.
- The MIPS side gets a data_line_interrupt interrupt when the ARM side has read the full 1024-byte FIFO buffer, so it can fill the next 1024-byte block with the graphics data.
- The ARM side keeps reading the graphics data until it has received enough for the full screen, at which point it sends command 0xC2 again, with the flag byte telling the MIPS side to stop transferring more graphics data.
- The MIPS side receives this command, clears the FIFO and turns off the data_line_interrupt.
- At this point the MIPS side just runs the CPU emulation, the ARM9 waits for the next VBlank interrupt, and the ARM7 plays AdLib audio, if any. The transfers will continue from the phase 6 above.
Adding the SB digitized audio into this system is rather difficult, as the audio buffers can be of any length, and they can be either one-shot or looping buffers, and at various sample rates. I am currently trying to add the SB audio transfer to the buffer end command (phase 10 above), so that the digitized audio would get transferred always after the graphics have been transferred.
With this new system everything related to data transfer on the MIPS side is handled within the cmd_line_interrupt and data_line_interrupt handlers, so that there is never any need to call the update_buf or such functions of the original SDK. I have actually removed most of the unneeded functions, but some of these still remain. I plan to eventually get rid of all the unnecessary overhead.
One additional advantage I got from this change, was that I don't need to allocate a timer interrupt on the MIPS side to emulate the VBlank signal. I can now get the timing from the interrupt the MIPS side receives from the ARM side, so that I can use the free timer for better SoundBlaster IRQ emulation with much more accurate timing.

GameBoy Online (2011/12/10) is released.

Glitch64 SVN r273 is released.

Fceux SVN r2371 is released.

Somehow you've ended up with a prepaid points card for your Wii, DSi, or 3DS. If you're looking to fill up your Wii with the best stuff from this year, you might be surprised to find out that there was stuff this year! The Wii Virtual Console actually looks populated, for example, when you look at the whole year's output at once. And we were surprised to see how well the 3DS Virtual Console has built up since its launch.
Join us after the break to find the most entertaining ways to spend your Nintendo points on your platform of choice. ?
WiiWare
MotoHeroz ($15)
A side-scrolling stunt racer in the vein of developer RedLynx's Trials series; but with cartoon physics in cartoon landscapes. Bounce giant trucks around on looping, swirling levels, knocking your friends around as you do so.
Bit.Trip Flux ($8)
If you don't have any Bit. Trip games yet, you might be better off buying one of the compilations on Wii or 3DS. But if you just want to download one for whatever reason, Flux ended the series this year with a return to Beat's block-paddling form.
escapeVektor: Chapter 1 ($5)
A Qix-style surround game with a beautiful, kind of Tron-ny graphics appropriate for its "inside the Wii CPU" setting.
Flight Control ($5)
It lacks the direct touch controls of the better-known iOS version, but the WiiWare version uses the Wiimote pointer as your method of guiding a bunch of planes to safe landings.
Bomberman Hero ($10)
Perhaps more interesting as a novelty than anything else: this Nintendo 64 Bomberman adventure was heavily focused on single-player ... by which we mean it didn't have multiplayer. What?
Super Bonk ($8)
The former Turbografx-16 mascot migrates to the SNES, in ... a really weird game, with growing and shrinking abilities, monster transformations, shooting sequences, and, of course, tons of things to hit with your giant head.
Mega Man X ($8)
It's the first game in the Mega Man spinoff series, and the first Mega Man game on SNES. It's also one of the best Mega Man games of any series.
Chrono Trigger ($8)
One of the absolute classic Squaresoft RPGs, along with ...
Final Fantasy III ($8)
Beautiful for its time, mechanically interesting, and with a story that people still fondly remember. If you want to give someone a crash course in the "golden age" of JRPGs, you could hardly do better than this.
Super Adventure Island and Super Adventure Island II ($8 each)
Hudson's grass-skirted, skateboarding Master Higgins comes to the SNES in the best-looking games in the series. The first one is strictly vintage Adventure Island, with none of the dinosaur companions or map screens from later NES games. Super Adventure Island II is kind of an RPG, with equippable armor and other items, and multiple islands that you can travel on a larger quest.
Super Earth Defense Force ($8)
One of the classic shooters from the SNES launch, in which you protect the earth from aliens by, you know, shooting at stuff constantly.
Faxanadu ($5)
Reminiscent of Zelda II, this is an epic action-RPG set on an enormous, dying World Tree.
Mega Man 5 ($5)
You might want to get just about any other NES Mega Man before this one, but it's still better than most non-Mega Man games.
Black Tiger ($8)
The more you play, the more exciting it gets! At least that's what the flyer for this 1987 arcade game says. It's a side-view, multi-scrolling action game that builds on Ghosts 'n Goblins.
DSiWare
Antipole ($5)
The level designs in this side-scroller force you to get creative with your ability to flip gravity early on. You'll be flipping back and forth to float in the middle of the screen, navigating past toxic substances that also react to your gravity powers, and dealing with spikes on every side of every surface.
Mighty Milky Way ($8)
More fun with gravity! Developer WayForward brings a rather bizarre game about jumping from tiny planet to tiny planet, using their gravitational fields to sling yourself from one to the next. You can also create and destroy planets to aid in movement. And you'll need to be adept to avoid the eye-lasers of a robotic T-rex.
Go! Go! Kokopolo ($8)
Here's an experience you won't get anywhere else. Vibrant sprites present the story of a cat scratching enemies into uncontrollable frenzies, and then leading them into carnivorous plants. That ... unique narrative provides the motivation for a series of top-down maze chases.
Plants vs. Zombies ($8)
It's not a game platform without Plants vs. Zombies!
Surfacer+ ($5)
A simple game in which you hold the stylus on a spot to grow big flowers. You must fill up the screen with as few big flowers as you can manage, while avoiding bouncing obstacles.
3DS eShop
Donkey Kong ($4)
If you didn't play this Game Boy platformer back in 1994, you owe it to yourself to go back and check it out. It takes the single-screen, enclosed levels of the original Donkey Kong, and expands that gameplay into a series mechanically novel jumping, climbing, and dodging exercises, with brilliant level designs and tricky, interesting mechanics.
Metroid II: Return of Samus ($4)
Samus Aran explores a spooky, cavernous planet teeming with monstrous, mutant Metroids. It nicely sets up the story of Super Metroid, if, uh, you haven't played Super Metroid yet.
Balloon Kid ($3)
The Game Boy sequel to Balloon Fight, the "Ambassador" game that made paying $80 too much for a 3DS totally worth it.
Gargoyle's Quest ($4)
A spinoff of Ghosts 'n Goblins starring the frustrating red devil Firebrand -- this time an action RPG set in a world of monsters.
Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins ($4)
This Game Boy game introduces the funhouse-mirror version of Mario, a guy called "Wario" who stuck around. It also introduces a carrot powerup that gives you rabbit ears. That didn't take on quite as much of a life.
Mega Man ($4)
We've been waiting for another opportunity to buy the portable Mega Man games since the GBA compilation was canceled. The 3DS Virtual Console provides just such a chance -- at least for the first one.
Mario's Picross ($4)
You probably know Picross -- the puzzle game about following numerical guides to fill in squares on a grid and reveal pictures. But if you don't know it, prepare for a few hours of frustration, followed by a lifetime of enjoyment and more frustration.
Pushmo ($7)
There are shades of Catherine in Intelligent Systems' cute puzzler: you push and pull blocks to make surfaces to climb. Only, in this game, the blocks form the pixelated shapes of objects, and you can create your own levels, to share with QR codes. And there's no meditation on adultery.
Freakyforms: Your Creations, Alive! ($7)
Creation tools are also involved here, as you create your own weird hero, and then drag it around a brightly-colored environment, meeting new "Formees" and taking on quests for them.
3D Classics: Kirby's Adventure ($7)
Kirby's NES game, pretty much exactly as it appeared back then ... except with 3D!
3D Classics: Excitebike ($6)
Sorry if you didn't sign into the eShop in time to get this for free. But it's still totally worth checking out, for a dramatic 3D effect that nothing else attempts, actually changing the whole perspective of the game with the movement of the 3D slider. Also, a save feature!

The most recent 3DS system update provides free access to all of Boingo's North American airport Wi-Fi hotspots, which means layovers just got another dimension of fun. Boingo operates the Wi-Fi in 42 airports in North America and suggested that free connection for the 3DS would keep bratty kids quiet while waiting for their flights -- at least, that's what we got out of this quote from Boingo: "With the holiday season approaching, more leisure travelers and families with children will fill our airports and have access to our hotspots."
Read between the lines, kiddos.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword's motion control scheme is here to stay, series boss Eiji Aonuma has said.Despite initial misgivings about requiring players to use the Wii Remote's MotionPlus attachment, Aonuma now believes buttons are a thing of the past for the Zelda series."I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now", Aonuma revealed in a newONM interview (via Kotaku). "So I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too."Nintendo demonstrated a Zelda "experience" for the Wii U during its unveiling at E3 this year. The Wii U's tablet controller was used as a touch-screen inventory. Will players be asked to use a Wii Remote Plus and tablet controller together? Or will the inevitable Wii U incarnation include better usage of the tablet, too?Zelda games for handheld systems will presumably keep the series' classic button controls. After this year's re-release of Ocarina of Time, the next 3DS Zelda game will be all-new, Aonuma recently said.

But Nintendo icon to pass on more responsibility to younger designers
Shigeru Miyamoto will not be leaving his position at Nintendo or retiring from the console giant.
Miyamoto said that his previous interview last week, in which he said he would be returning to grass-roots development, had been mistranslated.
"Nothing has changed, and nothing will be changed in the near future as to my role inside of the company," he told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Miyamoto will continue overseeing development of Nintendo titles, but admitted he would like to see younger designers take on more responsibility and would delegate accordingly.
He stated however that despite not leaving the console giant, he still wanted to develop new games, hinting at a new ip created with a small team.

Nintendo's 3DS sold 378,114 units in Japan last week, the best week of sales the system has seen since its launch in February.
The surge in sales - an increase week on week of 84 per cent, beating the system's launch-week sales by almost 7,000 units - was driven by Monster Hunter Tri G, which has sold 471,055 since its release on December 10.
It means 3DS has now sold more than three million units in Japan since launch, its life-to-date sales totalling 3.23 million, according to Media Create data passed along by Andriasang.

New releases may have dried up for 2011, but Nintendo promises Wii and 3DS owners have plenty to look forward to next year.
The platform has dated a range of first-party titles for the first quarter, including Wii family title Mario Party 9 and 3DS adventure Kid Icarus: Uprising in March.
Nintendo's latest release schedule also revealed a number of sequels due in 2012, including PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond for Wii and DS footballer Inazuma Eleven 2. And Professor Layton will make his UK 3DS debut next year in his fifth puzzle title to land on these shores.
Finally, Nintendo confirmed release dates for Boom Street (January 6th), Resident Evil: Revelations (January 27th) and The Last Story (February 24th).
Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D was promised a winter launch, while a vague '2012' release window was given for 3DS titles Mario Tennis and Luigi's Mansion 2.

Generation Media asks how much TV marketing Nintendo has used to promote the 3DS compared to the original DS – and has it been effective?
With the Nintendo 3DS having sold more worldwide in its first year of release than the original DS, we look at how TV advertising has contributed to its success.
The chart below represents the cumulative number of individual TVRs that Nintendo DS campaigns achieved in the following years: 2005 (UK?launch year for DS) and 2011 (UK launch year for 3DS). A?TVR, or Television Rating, is the measure of popularity for a program or ad by comparing its audience to the population. One TVR is equivalent to one per cent of a target audience.
For both launches, TV ads began in March with similar levels of activity. In 2005 the campaign achieved 313 TVRs, with 304 TVRs achieved in 2011.
From April onwards, 2011’s strategy vastly differs. Where Nintendo supported the DS only during launch month, the 3DS has been supported through the year.
In total, the 3DS campaign has actually recorded 250 per cent more TVRs than the original DS.

The Monster Hunter series' firm grip on the Japanese public continues unabated, with the new Monster Hunter Tri-G selling like crazy in Japan. "Like crazy" in this case translates to 471,055 units in two days, according to Enterbrain estimates.
That release (and its attendant 3DS bundles) drove the 3DS to its best week to date in Japan. 378,114 units went to happy monster hunters, besting the 371,326 sold at launch. The game has yet to be announced for release outside of Japan -- though the accessory made for it is now confirmed for North America. Of course, a new Monster Hunter game won't have the same immediately noticeable effect on sales in any other region.

You'll be able to get your hands – and specifically your right hand – on theCircle Pad Pro in the US on February 7th, when the peripheral goes on sale exclusively at GameStop for $19.99. That's a full two weeks before the PlayStation Vita reminds portable gamers why a second analog stick is so important.
In addition to the obvious second stick, the Circle Pad Pro adds "additional shoulder buttons to give it a feel more akin to traditional console controllers." You'll get to put those shoulder buttons and that second stick to work playing both Resident Evil Revelations – which is much better with the peripheral – andMetal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater, which is targeted for a loose Q1 2012 release. While both Revelations and the Circle Pad Pro share a February 7th release, they don't appear to share Europe's "special limited edition" bundle offering. That's alright, you're probably waiting for the inevitable redesign with the second stick built-in, right?

Admit it: Your flair for fashion, design and symmetry has prevented you from fully appreciating the gold-colored Wii Remote Plus that came bundled with special edition versions of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Hey, we're not judging! Take one look at our wardrobe and you'll know our meticulous approach to color coordination. We're here to tell you there's a solution to your dilemma -- Japanese Club Nintendo members can now spend their hard-earned credits on an equally golden Wii Nunchuck.
The faux-metallic peripheral will run you 600 Points, while the other new addition to the rewards catalog -- a 3DS game case which holds up to 18 titles -- will cost you 150 Points. You can check out the new Nunchuck in the image posted above; just try not to let the shameful color mismatching get to you. We've contacted Nintendo to see if these new products are coming stateside.

The full transcript of Wired's interview with Shigeru Miyamoto -- in which the industry legend triggered some panic over his future -- has been posted. Surprisingly, that pseudo-retirement news isn't even the juiciest angle; Miyamoto also discussed the company's troubled recent past, as well as its potentially Miyamoto-less future.
He explained that Nintendo's goals this generation have focused on "the expanding of the gaming population," a task which would seemingly put them at odds with the ever-increasing smartphone market. Miyamoto posits that his company isn't "directly competing" with phones; rather, both might just have increased the size of the gaming market, and "expanded the definition of videogames" themselves.
In the more recent past (last week, in fact), Nintendo launched the Retro-developed Mario Kart 7 for 3DS, a project which Miyamoto said succeeded due to its multicultural development approach. "We were able to join forces in order to realize a variety of different courses, a variety of different tastes," he explained. "I think that's one reason how it worked out well between a Japanese development team and a Western development team."
It seems Retro has earned the games industry maven's trust, as Miyamoto added, "As you know, we have already collaborated with Retro for the Metroid Prime series in the past. And I think when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration." We think we speak for everyone when we shout in support of this idea while doing fist pumps into the air. Check out the full interview for more on the future of Zelda, the 3DS, the Wii U and the other pies Miyamoto's got his fingers in.

Nintendo of America has officially launched the "overhauled" Club Nintendo rewards website.
As internet hawks had spotted when the revamped site went live prematurely last week, Nintendo has made it possible for Club Nintendo users to trade in Coins for downloadble games for Wii, DSi and 3DS.Current games available include Super Mario Kart (Wii VC, 100 Coins), Fluidity (WiiWare, 150 Coins), Xevious (3DS 3D Classics, 100 Coins) and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again (3DS eShop, 150 Coins).
Nintendo says this selection will be swapped for new titles on January 10, selected based on consumer feedback.
The site has also been given "a fun new look" and "new Coin-earning opportunities", plus "new Rewards, including Nintendo-themed notebooks and pen cases, plus a set of limited-edition posters honoring the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda". You're also now able to register third-party games for Coins.
Club Nintendo lets users tap in codes on leaflets that come with (previously first-party only) Wii, DS and 3DS games to redeem Coins, which can be exchanged for rewards on the site.

Australian retailer EB Games has listed a speculative price for the Wii U.
What would you pay?If you search the internet for a price on the Nintendo Wii U and come across the EB Games website, save your internet rants for another day, because nothing is confirmed.EB Games have listed the Wii U at a price of $598. After contacting the Media Manager of EB, CVG was informed the price given to the product is in fact "an estimated price which [EB] provide for all products where price has not yet been confirmed by the vendor."
That means $598 is a price that EB has given for what they *expect* the Wii U to be worth. Nintendo has neither provided a price, nor confirmed this as an Australian RRP for the console, which is expected to be released in 2012.
The Wii launched in Australia with a RRP of $399.95. The Wii U is definitely an advancement on the Wii, with new features and rumoured CPU specs to match the Xbox 360 - but at what cost? That's for Nintendo to decide.
Is retailer guesswork misleading? Would you pay $600 for a Wii U? Let us know in the comments section below.

Nintendo Of Japan is offering a fix for the game-breaking bug found in Wii RPG The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
As we reported last week, the bug is triggered when parts of the Song Of The Hero quest are completed in a certain order.Nintendo's initial response was to explain how to avoid the bug, and say it was "documenting all feedback." But now, Andriasang reports, the company is going further.
For those with an internet connection, Nintendo will "distribute a program." Whether this will be a patch to remove the bug from the game entirely, or a standalone piece of software to fix affected save files, is not made clear. Wii patches are rare; Nintendo has never updated one of its own games, but Activision has done so with recent entries in the Call Of Duty series.
Those whose Wiis are not connected to the internet will be able to send in their SD card, or even their Wii console, for Nintendo to fix itself.

Nintendo has teamed up with the Eurosport Group to create 3D video content for its newest handheld.
A dedicated Eurosport video player application is now available free of charge from the Nintendo eShop. Once installed, the app automatically downloads the latest videos via SpotPass.
The initial wave of videos will be two to three-minute clips from popular Eurosport show WATTS, which takes a lighter look at the world of sport and features sporting outtakes.
"We are always striving to bring fun and exciting new content to our fans and this new partnership with Eurosport will do just that," said Nintendo of Europe's marketing and PR managing director.
"We are looking forward to launching the WATTS videos each week along with a host of other 3D content on Nintendo Video from our various partners."
Eurosport's global communications director Heather Bowler added: "The 3D clips from WATTS, one of Eurosport's most established programmes, are guaranteed to engage and entertain Nintendo 3DS users.
"Eurosport and Nintendo are both leaders within their industries so there is a natural brand fit with the collaboration, which will extend our reach within an important target audience."
Nintendo also has partnerships with Aardman Animations, the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra and Red Bull Media House to provide content for its own Nintendo Video app.

Nintendo's 3DS has outperformed the company's previous platforms in Australia.
The handheld has sold more than 200,000 units in its first 37 weeks, setting a new sales record for the region.
It has not only surpassed the early sales of other handhelds, but even home consoles, according to CVG.
As with other markets, 3DS got off to a slow start Down Under but the global price cut and release of titles such as Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 has reversed the device's fortunes.

December 16th, 2011, 02:10 Posted By: wraggster
Last Thursday was the perfect storm in a teacup for games websites.
For a few moments, mere minutes really, Shigeru Miyamoto – creative genius behind almost everything that Nintendo is known for in the modern world – was calling time on an enviable career.
Wired declared he was ‘stepping down’ and quoted him as “retiring from [his] current position” to help “younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself.”
It’s a fairly transparent comment. But as Nintendo’s share price wobbled, investors panicking that the 59-year-old millionaire father of Mario was boning up on the rules of bridge rather than the rules of Mario Party, the format-holder said all was not as it seemed.
Quickly, a riposte came. Wordy, and repetitive, it wanted to be clear: Miyamoto ain’t going nowhere. Wired “misunderstood”.
“Video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto’s role at Nintendo is not changing. He will continue to be a driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts. In discussing his priorities at Nintendo in a media interview, Mr. Miyamoto explained how he is encouraging the younger developers at the company to take more initiative and responsibility for developing software. He attempted to convey his priorities moving forward, inclusive of overseeing all video game development and ensuring the quality of all products. Mr. Miyamoto also discussed his desire to pursue fresh ideas and experiences of the kind that sparked his initial interest in video games.”
In isolation, it was a confused lost-in-translation moment, a bit of a PR mess, but the usual immature he-said-she-said-oh-no-wait-they-didn’t that online games news is structured around.
But let’s forget what Miyamoto ‘didn’t’ say. Let’s focus on what everyone is choosing not to say.
And it’s this: perhaps it really is time for the most revered game developer of all to call it a day.
THE ULTIMATE LEGACY
I say this, of course, with all due respect.
Miyamoto is a true games hero. He led the creation of Mario, Zelda and countless other staple franchises that are cross-generational, and cross-audience.
He shaped the design of most Nintendo games hardware.
He is a key exec inside that business.
But the brouhaha tied into the mere suggestion he could retire raises questions about new talent in games that companies like Nintendo should address – not just for the health of the industry, but their own health, and their own reputation.
Much of the worry about Miyamoto retiring is to do with status. If he goes, it suggests weakness for Nintendo. It implies the next Mario, Mario Kart or Zelda, or even the next Nintendo console, will simply not be as good without him around.
To a sensible mind, of course, this is total bollocks. Nintendo is not one man. Miyamoto is not the only exec there. It is a company staffed by almost 5,000. It can surely survive the decreased involvement of one individual.
But sense rarely comes into it on topics like this. So Nintendo and Miyamoto must maintain that he’s going nowhere. If they could reasonably imply he was immortal and that his golden touch will inform games into perpetuity, they would. (In seriousness, as an aside, it must be horribly difficult for him at this juncture – although faced with having to oversee Mario Kart 8 or the 17th Zelda, it's clear that under no circumstances can he suggest he ever will eventually retire.)
Nintendo insists, then, that Miyamoto is a “driving force in Nintendo’s development efforts”. He is also “encouraging younger developers to take more initiative”, he “oversees all video game development” and “ensures the quality of all products” – and at the same time has a “desire to pursue fresh ideas”.
That’s an impossible, contradictory role. Unless Nintendo’s next console eliminates the need to sleep or have a life.
It’s time for Nintendo Japan’s most senior worrywarts and its itchyfeet shareholders to accept that Miyamoto is mortal like the rest of us, and be ready to talk about the next generation of games designers.
Nintendo’s corporate line might not agree, but I do – Miyamoto said it himself: “unless I say that I’m retiring, I cannot nurture the young developers”.
THE NEXT GENERATION
The entire situation only rams home that the games industry is at a very crucial crossroads.
The businesses trying to build the games industry further desperately need more talent to come in. Our schools aren’t good enough. ‘Games’ degrees don’t cut it half the time. Barriers exist for many with the passion, but no direction. Most teams consist of men – women still make up just a paltry 10 per cent of the global workforce for the entire industry. Something has to change. And there’s a chance for big companies like Nintendo to contribute serious change.
Dream scenario: Nintendo starts actively hiring would-be dev talent around the world, or at least promoting a more accessible download store and publishing scheme to encourage that audience to grow. Leaflets inserted with Nintendo games promote this, making the concept of being a games creator a mass-market one. Much like how Nintendo made the concept of being a gamer mass market with the Wii and DS.
Miyamoto can travel the world talking about how this new scheme works, how he works, and engage with the students and developers that would be desperate to be in the same room as him.
He can retain his status as Nintendo ambassador, but also book that cruise, take that holiday, work on that download game on his own. Most importantly, though, it maintains his reputation without removing his status. He gets to retire, without handing in his notice.
Because whether it was him travelling the world, or just focusing solely on engaging new talent within the Nintendo HQ, people would listen. They already hang off his every word.
And, really, I can’t think of anyone more respected, or more talented, than Miyamoto to actually bring to light and potentially fix the worrying fact that we don’t know where the next generation of Miyamotos might come from.

A relatively obscure sequel to a very popular NES game appears on the 3DS eShop this week: Sunsoft's Blaster Master: Enemy Below for Game Boy Color. It's time to return to the world of upside-down space trucks and floating cyborg head things.
WiiWare offers a new Carmen Sandiego game (what?) about math (what?) and DSiWare shows it is possible to offer a retail DS game as a download -- though that functionality has so far been almost the exclusive domain of tiny publishers. For example, today we have Elite Forces: Unit 77 from Gammick Entertainment, and a game in the spirit of a retail DS release: a new sequel to 2007's WordJong.

If your home is already full to bursting with Mario paraphernalia, you'll be delighted to learn that you can exchange your Club Nintendo Coins for downloadable games. Nintendo is featuring a rotating selection of WiiWare, Virtual Console, DSiWare, and eShop downloads offered on the North American Club Nintendo site.
Through January 10, your choices include Super Mario Kart (100 Coins), 3D Classics: Xevious (100 Coins), Fluidity (150 Coins), and Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Minis March Again (150 Coins). In a way, this is really cheap as it trades illusory fun money for games -- but in another way, it's outrageously expensive as said fun money is only acquired through the for-real purchase of multiple games.
Those of you with more space for swag have new reward options as well: three different, adorableMarionotebooks, and a Zelda poster set.

Other than wine, cheese and overwhelming apathy, the Louvre stands alone as France's most prized national treasure. It's enormous, it's teeming with art, and it's really old. Starting in March, though, the museum will get an infusion of comparatively new technology, thanks to the Nintendo 3DS. As the AFPreports, Nintendo has agreed to provide the Louvre with some 5,000 pocket consoles, to be offered as digital tour guides for museum patrons. With these devices tucked securely inside their fanny packs, wandering tourists will be able to pinpoint their location within the museum, select themed itineraries, and listen to audio commentary available in seven different languages. The consoles will eventually replace the museum's more traditional audio guides, as part of a wider campaign to bring 21st century technology to the Louvre's 12th century confines. "We are the first museum in the world to do this," Agnes Alfandari, the Louvre's head of multimedia, told the AFP, adding that a slate of dedicated smartphone and tablet apps is also in the works.

While Bethesda scrambles to control unforeseen events born from thousands of characters, objects and dragons interacting with each other in the sprawling land of Skyrim, Nintendo addresses a game-breaking error that occurs if you complete one of three quests in the wrong order ... and then talk to a guy twice.
"If you are experiencing this situation, we are able to repair your saved data," Nintendo writes on its support page for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. If you couldn't avoid triggering the bug (here's how), you can now send in your save file to be repaired. The company also intends to release "a program that will repair save data for those who have their Wii connected to the Internet." That sounds almost like a patch, filtered for technical terminology, but Nintendo only refers to it as a "program." (Aside: The mythical Wii game patch does exist in some cases!)
We'll let you know as soon as we hear more about this restorative download. If, in the meantime, you feel paranoid about Link's bugs, you can keep up to two duplicates of your save file -- just select "copy" from the main menu every now and then.

Though we remain disappointed in the dearth of proper 3DS ambassador games -- perhaps one where you solve a gruesome series of murders at an embassy -- Nintendo has at least completed its rewards program for early adopters of the system. The ten free Gameboy Advance games are now available to everyone who connected to the Nintendo eShop before August 12th.
Your portable rewards include: Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare Inc. Mega Microgames, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Wario Land 4, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity.
To download the games, sign into the eShop, visit the "Settings" page and pull up your download history. Your 3DS will be under the impression that you've already downloaded them, but just go with it and start re-downloading.

How do you play your new selection of Game Boy Advance games from the 3DS Ambassador promotion in their original native resolution?Booting the games up normally will stretch them slightly to better fit the 3DS handheld's top screen. But pressing the Start and Select buttons when loading the software will display the titles in their native resolution. It makes the games display in a much smaller window, but the graphics are sharper.Game Boy and Game Boy Color games also get a nice retro-themed border.Playing them in the standard upscaled mode causes graphics to become slightly pixelated, with an added blur effect sometimes noticeable to smooth this.Nintendo's impressive offering of ten top GBA titles went live today for 3DS Ambassadors.

MAME Wii is an Arcade Emulator based on SDLMAME. Many games for early arcade boards can be played with varying amounts of success.
Issues
Lots of ROMs are supported, but not all of them. If you don't see the ROM in the list in the emulator, then support for that ROM isn't included. This is to keep the size of the emulator low enough to run effectively on the Wii. A list of all the ones that are can be found here: http://www.toadking.com/wiimame-0.4.txt
Just because a ROM is supported does not mean it will run. Even games for early boards like CPS-1 can fail to run due to RAM limitations. If the emulator suddenly kicks you out to the Homebrew Channel, look in the MAME folder (sd:/mame/) for a file called errors.txt. If it says something about failing to allocate space, then odds are the ROM can't run on the Wii. The emulator might also crash outright and leave you with a code dump if RAM runs out.
Because the Wii is not a strong console, some games will be slow. Frameskipping is enabled by default to make games playable.
On older TVs, the edges of the screen can be cut off. To fix this, in mame.ini, look for the option "safearea" and set the value to something around 0.8 and 0.95. It will vary depending on your TV.
Changelog
1.0 - December 13, 2011
Rewritten frontend code entirely, no longer uses SDL.
Added better joystick support; Gamecube joystick works!

postLoader3, made by GBAtemp member stfour, has been updated from version 3.49.1 to 3.50.1. This versatile Wii application can be used in conjunction with Priiloader as an alternative to the Homebrew Channel and/or system menu, and also supports launching Wii games and VC/Wiiware titles from real or emulated NAND. See what's new the change log below, and be sure to join the on-going discussion for the latest (off-site) download and more information about this homebrew project's progress.
QUOTE: Change Log 12/17/11•Corrected some issue with GRRLIB video initialization
•Added priibooterGUI 0.2
•postLoader when executed from priibooter(GUI) do not show more the device
initialization screen (it assumes that they are already init)
priibooterGUI notes:
•can load it's own background png from ://ploader/priibooter.png (from sd is highly suggested)
•backround if faded-in for about 5 second during usb init. If usb is already
initialized fade-in will take 3 second. During this time you can interrupt and
show boot menu pressing any key
•the boot menu allow to select postLoader/neek/sm/hbc. The selection can be
saved or just used one time
•uses the same postloader's themes for menu.

December 19th, 2011, 00:19 Posted By: wraggster
via http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/DSblog.html
Since the last blog post I have focused on getting the SB digitized audio working. That has been much more difficult than I originally thought. First, it took me several days to come up with a data transfer method that might support all the features that the SB digitized audio needs. Then I began implementing the auto-init DMA version as used in Doom. It took me several days to even get any sound out of that system, and the current status is that the audio is full of clicks and pops, and severe distortion.
I think the biggest problem in getting the audio working is the timing issue. Playing audio is very time-critical, the new samples need to be in the ARM7 playing buffer some time before they are actually getting played. I can only transfer new audio data from the MIPS side to the ARM9 side when the graphics are not getting transferred, so that means I can only transfer new audio samples at about 30 times per second. Using a 512-sample FIFO transfer buffer, that would give the maximum sample rate of 15360Hz. Doom actually uses SB TIME_CONSTANT of 0xA6, which corresponds to (1000000 / (256-TIME_CONSTANT)) = 11111Hz. So, during every 1/30 transfer window I should move around 370 samples. My buffer copying works with 128-byte increments, so most of the time the transfer handles 384 samples, and occasionally only 256 samples.
Currently I use the same ring buffer on the NDS side for receiving the data from the MIPS FIFO (by the ARM9 processor), and for filling the audio playing buffer (by the ARM7 processor). I believe the clicks and pops are caused by this sharing of the buffer. The ARM9 does not know the position where the ARM7 is copying data from the buffer, so when the timing of the audio playing differs from the timing of the buffer filling (which will always happen as the ARM and MIPS have different base speeds for their timers), occasionally wrong samples are getting copied to the playing buffer.
I think I need to add a new ring buffer to the ARM9 side, and also attempt to sync the ARM7 and ARM9 buffer accesses so that I avoid accessing the same area of the ring buffer from both processors simultaneously. I am not yet sure how to avoid buffer under- or overflows when the actual audio playing speed differs from the buffer filling speed, and the audio is looping for long periods of time. I might need to do some on-the-fly adjusting of the playing frequency, or some such trickery.
All in all, this is quite a difficult challenge to get working properly. Luckily, I have a two-week Christmas vacation starting tomorrow, so besides the family- and Christmas-related things to do, I should now have more time to work on DS2x86. I still hope to get a version released during this year, although it looks like that version will not yet support all the graphics and audio features that the current DS2x86 does. But we shall see.

Ratings have popped up in Australia for 3DS games called simply "Rayman" and "Prince of Persia," along with a Wii "Prince of Persia." Ubisoft has done plenty with both of these franchises, ensuring that we can't know for sure exactly what's been revealed here.
The simplest explanation is that these listings are all for Virtual Console downloads. Prince of Persia was released on both the Game Boy and Game Boy Color, making it eligible for the 3DS Virtual Console -- and it was made for almost all of the platforms supported by the Wii Virtual Console. In addition, a game called "Rayman" was released on Game Boy Color, which was a combination of elements from Rayman 1 and 2 -- and thus providing an example of why we'd have a hard time knowing what the plain "Rayman" title referred to.

Nintendo's Wii U hasn't exactly been hanging out around paparazzi, getting its picture snapped and accidentally showing too much leg. Rather, it's been totally absent from the spotlight since its initial unveiling at E3 2011 back in June, but that's about to end. "Nintendo of America, working with the 2012 International CES management, will offer demos of the upcoming Wii U console to members of the media who did not see the system at the 2011 E3 Expo," Nintendo told Joystiq in a statement this morning.
But even though the unreleased console is making its second public debut next month, it looks like what's being shown off isn't different from what we peeped at E3 2011. "Nintendo will not have a booth at CES, nor does it plan to include any games, experiences or information beyond what was available at the 2011 E3 Expo," the statement continues. So, a handful of tech demos and Zelda HD, then. Unsurprisingly, Nintendo also noted that the console remains on track from a launch sometime "between the start of the 2012 E3 Expo in June, and the end of 2012." We're gonna go ahead and call that "the second half of 2012," if you don't mind.

The 3DS Circle Pad Pro, available next February at GameStop, has plenty of room inside for a family of four. Imagine the dinners you'll serve once you install appliances in the cavernous interior, lovingly photographed by ldblog.
Given the $20 peripheral's guts, let's all agree now to act surprised when Nintendo announces a dual pad 3DS sometime next year. Also, be sure to call your local RE/MAX agent if you're looking to move into the 3DS Circle Pad Pro next year. Space is sure to fill fast.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is to release in 2012 exclusively on 3DS, with a storyline that will chart the beginning of the end of Kingdom Hearts' current storyline.
The game will feature two protagonists, Sora and Riku, "free-flow" action for fast and acrobatic play in environments and combat, and a recruitment system that allows you to capture Spirits to fight alongside you. Locations will include La Cité des Cloches from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
"With the tenth anniversary of the series on the horizon, the currentKingdom Hearts saga is approaching its climactic conclusion," says game director Tetsuya Nomura. "The story of this game will serve as the opening chapter of the final conflict, and, as always, will be full of surprises. In order to best implement this element of surprise and discover new realms of possibility, we have chosen Nintendo 3DS as our platform."
The series' worldwide popularity makes the game a significant win for 3DS, though not the first for a Nintendo handheld - that honour goes to the 2009 DS release Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.

Nintendo will be showing off its upcoming Wii U console at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show – but don't expect anything new.
Speculation has been rife for the past few days as to whether or not Nintendo would attend the US event. These have now been confirmed via a statement sent to 1UP.
However, the format holder has emphasized that there will be no new announcements or new titles to play, and that only the press would have access to the device.
"Nintendo of America, working with the 2012 International CES management, will offer demos of the upcoming Wii U console to members of the media who did not see the system at the 2011 E3 Expo," the statement read.
"However, Nintendo will not have a booth at CES, nor does it plan to include any games, experiences or information beyond what was available at the 2011 E3 Expo.
Nintendo assured the industry that the Wii U was still on track to make its launch, which was given as "between the start of the 2012 E3 Expo in June, and the end of 2012".
CES 2012 takes place in Las Vegas next month. Rumours are abound that Microsoft will use the event tounveil its next Xbox console.

One Japanese retailer (via Siliconera) is saying there are a few more surprises in store for Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D players. Outside of what the hardware brings to the table, it appears Konami has added some new gameplay elements -- specifically, Snake can now walk while crouching, and a pair of new camera options are available.
First, there's a first-person mode -- we assume that means players can go through the whole game in first-person view. In addition to that, there's also a new over-the-shoulder option listed. The translated page reads: "In addition, the adoption of squatting movement, the camera over his shoulder, and also includes FPS mode to optimize system operation and safety for beginners MGS!"
We contacted Konami to confirm, but was given the generic "no comment" response.

What's that, Link? You say your progress in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Swordhas been halted by a game-breaking sequence of events? And that I must deliver expository text because you're unable to speak? Alright then.
Nintendo's corrective strategy for Skyward Sword, which will strike you as unorthodox and elaborate compared to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 patching procedures, is to release a full Wii Channel. It will repair (or effectively patch) save files created after the glitch has occurred. According to an announcement from Japan, the "Zelda Data Restoration Channel" will be available through the Wii Shopping Channel, from the Wii Channel section.
Nintendo of America has not yet updated its support page to highlight the new channel. At the moment, it's letting customers send in their save files for repair.

Now you can watch Future Publishing and Nintendo's "NintendoTV" without having to buy a European Wii or 3DS. The show has been relaunched, and with that relaunch comes a fancy new YouTube embed, so you can see footage of big new Nintendo games, coverage of launch events, and other such fun stuff ... right here, in this post!
Watch it yourself to see how it compares to the "Nintendo Week" available through North American Wiis, and the "Nintendo Show 3D" you can watch through the 3DS eShop. Alternately, marvel at the existence of three different Nintendo-produced video programs available through consoles, which you quite likely have never heard of.

Quietly, and very much in Japanese, Nintendo released the original NES game,The Legend of Zelda, on its eShop Virtual Console section. Zelda marks the first of the 10 NES "Ambassador Program" games to arrive on the eShop for sale, replete with save states and a price tag: ¥500 (approximately $6).
Those of you who already have the game downloaded via Nintendo's early adopter Ambassador Program are able to snag the updated VC version of the game for free as well. And for those of you who really wanted a virtual copy of the game's instruction manual, Nintendo's got that covered as well! Hot dog!

Sure, you can download Tetris just about anywhere these days, but you couldn't downloadGame Boy Tetris. Today, the Game Boy's killer app arrives on the 3DS eShop, nostalgic music and all. It's accompanied by a much less familiar game: WayForward's brand newMighty Switch Force. So, it's kind of an excellent day for the eShop!
Meanwhile, amateur chiptuners can try out a new music program on DSiWare designed for arranging retro-style music.

Terry Cavanagh's great platformer VVVVVV is heading to a 3DS near you as promised: The game has been set for release on the Nintendo eShop next week. Starting December 29, you'll be able to grab the game (published byNicalis, the company behind Cave Story and its various iterations) for a price of $7.99 on your 3DS, and take on the game's for yourself.
Or, if you've never played the title before, you could go try out the free Flash version, or play it on PC or Mac as you wish. It's a great and well-made experience for sure, but bring all of the patience you have. You'll need it.

In October, Satoru Iwata hosted a "Nintendo Direct" video, in which he introduced the pink 3DS, detailed the big firmware update, and gave release windows for some eShop releases. Iwata will host another video press conference on December 27 at noon JST, or 10PM EST on December 26, according to a new "event" set up on the publisher's Ustream site. This time, we suspect we'll learn release dates -- or windows -- for at least some of its big upcoming releases, like Luigi's Mansion 2, Mario Tennis, Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D, or Paper Mario.
Last time, the Japanese video was followed the next morning by a Nintendo of America version, hosted by NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime. The same will probably happen this time.

Maximum Family Games has announced it will publish Myst 3D on the 3DS in 2012. Developed by Hoplite Research, Myst 3D promises to take the ancient PC point-and-click adventure into the third dimension and bring along the Rime Age, which was not included in the original PC release.
Hoplite was also behind the DS and PSP ports of Myst, so it seems likely thatMyst 3D is simply a port of the original Myst with added 3D effects – as opposed to a fully explorable, polygonal title akin to Real Myst.
Myst 3D is scheduled to be released on March 27, 2012.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is notorious for his ability to say very little with a whole lot of words, but he doesn't bother mincing words when it comes to his feelings on social gaming giant Zynga. Speaking to the Wall Street Journal's All Things Digital blog, Fils-Aime answers a question regarding his thoughts on Zynga's recent IPO by saying, "What's the share price? It will be interesting when it breaks below $9." In case it isn't clear, that's the executive way of saying, "Your IPO ain't shit."
He continues by inferring that Zynga's creating the same titles over and over, presumably referring to the company's many "Ville" games, though he seems more than okay with his own company doing as much with its recent release of the seventh Mario Kart title.
As for the free-to-play business model, however, Fils-Aime is less pessimistic. While he says, "I would argue Facebook is a platform ... I wouldn't expect to see our franchises on other platforms [that aren't owned by Nintendo]," he admits that Nintendo will "certainly" be experimenting with "other forms of monetization." When we'll see that pricing experimentation remains to be seen, however, as Fils-Aime only reveals vaguely that said price "experimentation" is currently taking place across Nintendo's various internal studios.

Nintendo has begun rolling out updates for the 10 NES games given free to 3DS Ambassadors earlier this year.
Nintendo had previously promised that the 10 NES games offered in the program will later be upgraded with "additional features" once the games are made available for purchase by the general public.According to reports, The Legend of Zelda has just been updated in Japan to support the creation and loading of restore points - as can be done with currently-released Game Boy Virtual Console titles.
The update has also added a digital manual and a nicer menu icon for the game. Similar updates are expected for the other nine NES games in due course, although there's no ETA on that or when any updates will be issued outside of Japan.
It's worth looking forward to though, considering Nintendo promised some of the NES games will receive added "multiplayer simultaneous play" functionality.
Nintendo set up the 3DS Ambassador program to compensate early 3DS owners after it announced that it will slash almost a third off the console's price - less than six months after its launch. Pre-price-drop owners needed simply to log onto the eShop before August 12, 2011, to qualify.

According to a recent Nikkei report, Nintendo will introduce paid downloadable content to its games for the first time in recorded human history next March, with the release of Fire Emblem for the 3DS. The price of this expansion will apparently be "several hundred yen," and that it -- and other DLC on the company's platforms -- won't make it any easier for players to make their way through Nintendo's games, which probably weren't very difficult to begin with.
Nikkei also reported that the Wii U will also play home to downloadable add-ons, but said nothing about the still-to-come library of the Wii, which -- well, in order to release expansions for something, you first need something to expand upon.

More 3DS sales figures coming right at you: According to data from publisher Enterbrain, the 3DS has now exceeded sales of four million units in Japan (asexpected), wrapping up the week leading into Christmas with 510,629 systems sold. That's an increase of 39 percent over the last week, which also saw the 3DS outselling the newer and more expensive PlayStation Vita by about 13 percent.
Mario achieved an accompanying milestone (according to Famitsu), hawking a million copies each of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land. The portly plumber's latest adventures are reportedly the first 3DS games to sell over 1 million copies in Japan. The most recent third-party game to come close to that target is likely Monster Hunter Tri-G, which has already shipped a million copies.

Today, I have released a translation patch for the NES adventure game Takeshi’s Challenge. Consider it a gift from Scrooge. :P
You’ve probably heard about this already. It’s pretty infamous for its poor quality. Or maybe the whole game was just a comedian playing a prank on everyone.
I was planning to release it on the 10th to celebrate its 25th anniversary, but replacing the graphics proved more time consuming than I thought. So instead you get to share the experience Japanese kids must’ve felt 25 years ago when they got this as a holiday gift.

Here's a christmas little present for you, in case you pulled your good ol' Virtual Boy out of the closet to play through Virtual Boy Wario Land again over the holidays. A complete graphical game guide, for which I combined level maps made by Trebor Almasy with the walkthrough found in Brian Hodges' GameFAQ, both used with kind permission. Click here for the guide.

Wii's swan-song, its successor's unveiling and the fall and rise of 3DS.
Wii and Wii U
It was a quiet year for the Wii, with headlines naturally focused on its rumoured successor. In February, THQ CEO Brian Farrell dropped a heavy hint that new Nintendo hardware was waiting in the wings, telling investors he did not expect new systems from Microsoft or Sony but adding: "It's difficult on Nintendo - we'll let them announce their new hardware."
Soon after, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that sales of seven million units a year in North America alone proved there was no need for a Wii 2, saying: "We'll make decisions about a successor system at the time when software developers cannot offer surprises [on Wii]."
Yet a sparse Wii release schedule told a markedly different tale. The only Wii game to make headlines in the early part of the year was We Dare, a racy party game from Ubisoft that was actually far tamer than its debut trailer implied. European ratings board PEGI defended the 12 rating it gave the game after famously reasonable UK tabloid The Sun said the game "promotes orgies and lesbian sex to kids as young as 12." Ubisoft eventually cancelled We Dare the day before it was due to launch in Europe, but had a good year elsewhere: Just Dance 2 sold a million units in the UK alone, and was later named the biggest thirdparty Wii game of all time with 14 million worldwide sales.
In mid-April sources told us that the Wii successor was very much real, with Nintendo to unveil the system at E3 in June with a view to a late 2012 release. Shigeru Miyamoto confessed the following week that new hardware was on the way, and by the end of the month Nintendo had confirmed its new console would be unveiled and playable at E3, and launch in 2012.
The official unveiling of Wii U and its divisive tablet controller came during Nintendo's E3 press conference, which our report described as hitting "a sweetspot in the Venn diagram of self-celebration, wry deference, nerdish awkwardness, earnest confidence and creative vigour." Satoru Iwata hailed the system as "a new structure for home entertainment … [that] will let everyone see games in a different way." It certainly let investors see Nintendo in a different way: the company's share price hit a five-year low the following day, and fell a further 5.2 per cent the day after. Iwata said it was all "very strange." He would soon get used to it, with the company taking a battering from investors and analysts as 3DS struggled, and the sickness spread: Square Enix's shares fell ten per cent after it announced Dragon Quest X would be headed to Wii U as well as its predecessor.
Little has been seen of the system since, with Nintendo apparently seeking to address one of the biggest criticisms of Wii U: that it only supports a single tablet controller. A report last month claimed the company was working on multiple controller support, as well as RAM and processor speed. The final version of the console will be shown off at E3 in June.
Nintendo announced a revision of the ageing Wii hardware, designed to sit horizontally instead of vertically, available at a lower price with Wii Sports and Wii Party but no backwards compatibility with GameCube games. That price point no doubt played a part in strong sales of the system in the US - half a million were sold on Black Friday alone - but the biggest factor in Wii's sustained success was The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
It was 2011's sole recipient of an Edge ten, our review hailing the fact that "this ultimate tale of hero-making should see Nintendo's hardware become the console it was always meant to be." It sold 195,000 copies on its debut in Japan, and 535,000 in the US in a little over a week. Nintendo will need to ensure Wii U doesn't have to wait as long for its own Skyward Sword if the console is to succeed, with Microsoft and Sony doubtless at work on next-generation hardware of their own.

Your 3DS doesn't have to be naked while playing Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D. Accessory company Hori is releasing a suite of themed 3DS accessories, with which you can outfit your handheld to prepare it for the rigors of CQC.
The Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3D Accessory Set includes an olive drab pouch for the system and games, a set of camo stickers for the interior of the system, a "Protect Cover" for the exterior featuring Yoji Shinkawa's character art, and a stylus on a lanyard.
In Japan, the Accessory Set will retail for ¥2,981, out alongside the game on March 8. Hori accessories are often released stateside, to retailers like Amazon as well as Hori's own store, so it's quite likely you'll be able to do some on-site procurement of your own accessories.

Surprise! The 3DS eShop is getting not-terrible! The original downloadable games are starting to stack up (Pushmo, Mighty Switch Force), and the Virtual Console is home to a lot of interesting games -- like, for example, the Game Boy version of Bionic Commando, coming out December 29 in both North America and Europe. We aren't sure how it's able to make it to the shop when the NES Bionic Commando never could.
That's the same day North America gets VVVVVV. See what we mean about the eShop no longer being a terrible destination for games?

The Nintendo Direct conference was ... light on news. However, Nintendo did announce that the first downloadable demos for retail 3DS games are hitting the Japanese eShop today! The selection includes Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy,Resident Evil: Revelations, Rhythm Thief, and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D.
All of those games are expected to launch in the US around the same time as their Japanese releases, save Theatrhythm, which hasn't been announced stateside. We're just going to be optimistic and believe demos are on the way soon. Of course, we were optimistic about the amount of news we thought would come out of this thing, as well, and that didn't get us very far.

On the occasion of the release of V7 Final cIOS d2x (since December 6 already), and as the development of the installer dragbe seems stalled, GX-Mod now offers a version unofficially the d2x cIOS Installer 3.1. It now includes the cIOS d2x V7 Final and was translated into French by me, for anglophobes. The modified sources are of course included in the archive to comply with the license. Note that this version does not differ from the pack "Installer 3.1 + d2x V7", except that the d2x V7 files have been included directly in the source (more own) and the whole interface has been translated into French. Being an unofficial version, any bug or error in translation should not be reported to the original author (who need not be bothered with an unofficial version), but directly to me. d2x cIOS Installer 3.1 Fr (Unofficial) Official site: http://code.google.com/p/d2x-cios-installer/

The Gamecube loader for running games from an SD Gecko or one HDD (connected using an adapter EXI - FDI) has been updated by emu_kidid , which continues to improve over the versions. Since the last version officially proposed in the form of binary (R62), much progress has been made to fix various bugs (of Zelda Wind Waker for example) but also add some nice features, the latest being a patch not having to keep a game in the drive and another patch to better support 480p wii settled. The interface has also undergone a facelift in the spring. The curious can visit the official repository to see any changes made. Update: Version R94 pointed the tip of his nose just one day later, and replaces the previous version. This update improves last minute the "No DVD".
Summary of the homebrew
and foremost, it is useful to clarify some important things to reframe the situation - this is a homebrew native GAMECUBE by definition backward compatible with the Wii with some modifications (installation of cMios wiigator 0.2 and using Wii Gamecube Homebrew Launcher 0.2.3 to run from Swiss-GC Homebrew Channel). Keep in mind that it was designed at first for the Gamecube. - GC as an application, no device is accessible only Wii (SD slot, USB ports, etc). It is therefore necessary to use different "accessories" to enjoy: SDGecko and / or IDE / EXI (both can be purchased or manufactured home) Going back in the thick of things, Swisscom GC is actually the successor SD-Boot (almost entirely rewritten), a loader can launch games in ISO format GC / CMG from an SD card or HDD ** * via the appropriate adapter (to plug in a memory card port GC). Here Currently supported features: - Loading GC executable (. dol) from the following media: ** SD / SDHC ** / * DVD-R/HDD - Load game (s) ISO / GCM for the following media: hard original / ** SD / SDHC ** / * DVD-R/HDD - Support multi-game compilations on DVD-R (Cobra / GCOS) - Supports multi-disc games from the following media: original disc / SD ** / ** SDHC / DVD-R/HDD * - Copy of original disc to SD ** / ** SDHC / HDD * - Region Free mode / Video mode forced 480p (WIP) - cheat engine for all games (making ** updated via SD / SDHC ** / * HDD) Future Features (in order of priority): - Memory Card Manager - Support for USBGecko / SE - Dumpeur IPL / SRAM / DVD-ROM / RAM - System IPL * features require a HDD -IDE adapter EXI or HDD adapter home . ** SD features require SDGecko or an SD adapter home . The main advantage of this project (in addition to his exploit to launch games from an SD device HDD or on GC), for the budding handyman, is the possibility of self-assembly of the entire necessary modifications, as well as the IDE-SDGecko EXI. Most couch potatoes still have the option to buy the modules already installed. The whole is of course open source and you can find your happiness (binaries / sources) on the project's official GoogleCode. Please note that a number of homebrew already support the IDE module EXI-see list attached link: http://www.gc-forever.com/forums/vie...php?f=23&t=331 WiiPower offers a very nice homebrew to run swiss-GC from HBC (Wii): http://www.gc-forever.com/forums/vie....php?f=6&t=371

December 28th, 2011, 01:25 Posted By: wraggster
via http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/DSblog.html
Merry Christmas! Since this Sunday happened to occur on the Christmas day, I decided to write most of the post beforehand, and then just add a few words and post it on the actual Christmas day. I don't want to spend all of my Christmas working on DS2x86, I'll need to have some free time to enjoy the holidays as well. :-)
[h=4]Doom audio work[/h]During my first Xmas vacation week I have continued working on the SB digitized audio handling for the new transfer system. On Monday, as I was testing the clicking problem, it occurred to me that it would help me in pinpointing the location of the clicks if I could see the actual waveform produced. Thus I began recording the audio from the Nintendo DS headphone connector to my PC. This was a big help, for example when I added four samples of value 0x90 (where the SB middle point is at 0x80) into a certain position of every 128-byte sample block, I could see that the clicks always happened at offset 32 into this 128-byte block. Due to the fact that Doom sound initialization plays first a small sample before starting the auto-init looping mode, offset 32 meant that the clicks were always at the beginning of the transfer buffer. The actual clicks looked like the following (with the 4 samples of 0x90 value being at the beginning of each 128-sample block):
Finally by Monday evening I found the cause for the clicks in the audio. These were caused by the card FIFO containing an extra word in it before the actual audio sample data, and as the receiving routine on the ARM side assumed the whole transfer buffer consisted of audio samples, these 4 invalid samples caused the clicks. The actual reason why there were an extra word in the FIFO is still a bit of a mystery to me. After spending most of Tuesday experimenting with this, it seemed that the extra word was the result of a previous command to the card when the MIPS side was not able to respond quite as fast as the ARM side expected. The problem got worse when I reduced the MIPS CPU speed, which also pointed to a timing problem. After some more experimenting I finally managed to adjust my new transfer system so that it now seems to work with all possible CPU speeds and with the card FIFO always containing only correct data.
After I got rid of the clicks, I decided to record the whole Doom demo, so that I could compare the audio quality of the original (current) DS2x86 transfer system with the new system. I noticed that in the old system (with the audio playing at a constant 22kHz rate) the audio had repeating 512-sample dropouts, which I had not been able to fix using the original DSTwo audio transfer buffering system. Here below are images of the first AdLib note in Doom, on top is the waveform from the old transfer system (with one 512-sample dropout selected) and below it the waveform from the new system (where AdLib audio is generated on ARM7 and played at 32kHz, so there are no dropouts and the quality is in general much better).
After getting Doom to work, I continued with getting the SB digitized audio of my own LineWars II working. It does not use auto-init audio, instead it does the buffer swapping in software. It re-starts the audio playing from the other buffer inside the SB IRQ (which happens when playing the current buffer finishes). It then prepares the next buffer inside the same IRQ handler, and then returns to the actual game play. This system is currently almost working, but there are gaps in the audio, which I believe occur when the SB IRQ on the MIPS side happens just after the previous 1/30th second block has been transferred to the ARM side. I think I need to delay the audio playing so that I don't keep running out of the currently playing buffer on the ARM7 side before the next buffer transfer has started from the MIPS side to the ARM9 side.
[h=4]New transfer system performance[/h]As I was recording the Doom demos from both the old system and the new transfer system, I noticed that the recording from the old system was considerably longer than the recording from the new system. Seems like this is one way to calculate the real-world speedup that I was able to achieve with the new transfer system. The new system is not fully optimized yet, but it does transfer all graphics and audio data, so the results should be quite comparable. The time it took from the start of the first AdLib note to the end of the final sound was 3:34.90 (or 214.90 seconds) using the old transfer system, and 3:06.94 (186.94 seconds) using the new transfer system. That is, with the new system Doom uses only 87% of the time to run the whole demo, so the new system does give a nice performance boost. Both of these timings were taken with the 360MHz CPU speed and 30fps screen refresh rate with scaling mode Zoom.
[h=4]Plans for the next week[/h]During the remainder of my Xmas vacation I plan to first work on the more essential missing features of the new transfer system, like the whole EGA graphics mode support, and then hopefully still improve the SB digitized audio somewhat. I believe the SB audio support is not quite essential to be included in the next version, but the EGA support pretty much is. I also just added PC speaker audio support to DS2x86, as that is a new feature that has until now been completely missing. Using the old transfer system I would have needed to create a waveform and mix it into the 16-bit stereo buffer (which already had AdLib and SB digitized audio). I thought this was too much work for such a small feature so I never got around to implementing it. However, with the new transfer system all I need to do is to send the frequency value (a single 16-bit value) from the MIPS side, and the ARM7 can then use the PSG sounds to create a beep at that frequency. Very simple, and very similar to the way it works in the original DSx86. The only difference is that in DS2x86 the speaker frequency will only change at most 30 times a second, while in DSx86 it can change much faster.
The next released version of DS2x86 will have the new transfer system, but it will very likely still miss a lot of features. One feature that will probably be completely removed is the ability to take screen copies. This is because the actual screen image is now created on the ARM9 side, and there is no (fast) way to transfer it to the MIPS side for writing to the SD card. If I wanted to have screen copies, I should duplicate the screen handling to the MIPS side, and that would just increase the size of the code too much. In any case, the only thing I can promise for sure is that the next version (with version number 0.30) will run Doom faster than ever before, with much improved audio quality. Any other game or software might not work properly, so please be prepared to have many games still fail to run in the next version. But, I hope that when I get the next version released, you would be interested enough to test your favourite games and report to me in what way they fail to run. :-)
Anyways, have a nice holiday and the end of this year! It might be that I will release the next version on the January 1st, 2012!

Fceux SVN r2376 is released.

GameBoy Online (2011/12/25) is released.
GameBoy Online Changelog:
- Do not initialize a dummy audio output instance if there never was a true instance before (Optimization for when people want to run the emulator with audio disabled.).
- Removing a stray semicolon.
- Small cleanup.
- Optimized the IRQ assertion.
- De-inlined some code for clarity.
- Comments update.

Snes9x TestBuild 20111223 is released. Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It basically allows you to play most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems on your PC or Workstation; which includes some real gems that were only ever released in Japan.
Snes9x is the result of well over three years worth of part-time hacking, coding, recoding, debugging, divorce, etc. (just kidding about the divorce bit). Snes9x is coded in C++, with three assembler CPU emulation cores on the i386 Linux and Windows ports.

Did you get a Nintendo shaped bundle of joy for Christmas? Completed the games already? Fear not, as from March Kyoto's gaming veterans will be launching paid downloadable game content for its 3D handheld. The first title to get the goodies will be Fire Emblem, and as yet, there's no clues about what treats you'll get for the reported "several hundred yen" you'll be asked to stump up. Nintendo, however, is understandably keen to stimulate interest in its 3D titles, and more importantly, claw back some of that mobile gaming market-share. With hints of downloadable add-ons coming to the Wii-U also, and Mr. Iwata's previous commitment to deliver the goods, it clearly thinks this is the way to go -- let's just hope all the kinks have been ironed out come release day.

The Hori accessory kit won't be the only way for Japanese customers to outwardly display their love of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D. Kojima Productions' Jiroo Tsubuyaki tweeted that Nintendo plans to release a 3DS hardware bundle for the title, which comes out March 8 in Japan.
The design has yet to be finalized, so Tsubuyaki didn't have any pictures to share. However, we can already tell you that it's going to make us want to buy a Japanese 3DS and a copy of a game we're still worried about.

Japan's 3DS eShop will offer another of the NES "Ambassador" games for sale next week -- an act that also means an updated version of the app for those who downloaded it for free. Following last week's release of The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros. will be available on January 5. Those without 3DS diplomatic immunity will have to pay ¥500 ($6.44).
The updated eShop versions of the Ambassador games add multiplayer, save state and sleep mode support and instruction manuals. So far, no NES games have been released on the eShop outside of Japan.

If you're a stone-cold psychopath whose masochistic gaming tendencies push you away from ... well, normal-people games and into the cold embrace of impossible games, then the unavailability of an English port for Takeshi's Challenge has probably been a sore point for you. We probably shouldn't encourage your self-destruction, but you should know that a few kind souls have translated the bizarre NES title for your localized enjoyment.
The localization comes from ROM modder KingMike (via Tiny Cartridge). Before looking into acquiring the game, though, we'd suggest you also find an English language strategy guide to help you, because this game was made by the Devil.

You enter the quiet, overgrown cavern by pushing open the heavy stone door with all your might. Inside, sunlight streams through the broken ceiling, and dust that hasn't been disturbed in hundreds of years lazily floats through the air, shaken up by your entrance. The sunbeams land on the summit of a small set of stairs, where an ornate, red and gold chest sits, teasing and waiting for you to open it.
You do. As you crack open the ancient treasury, , starting quietly and then opening up into a triumphant series of simple notes, telling you that you have finally done it. The item you pull out of the centuries-old coffer is fine treasure indeed.
It's a shirt, adorned with some kind of legendary logo, a heart container tag, and the number "25" on the back. It's available in five sizes, for a special one-time only printing. Order now, before February 20, 2012, to get it sometime this May. You fold the shirt into your leather pack, and move on through the dungeon -- who knows what fearsome beast you might have to use this on, three different times, to defeat it?
