The Wii Fit U retail version will be available in stores beginning January 10,Nintendo announced this morning, just in time for folks to consider an alternative to that brand new gym membership they're statistically unlikely to use.
"Wii Fit U is a great option for busy moms and families who want to stay active in the comfort of their own homes – which is perfect during the cold winter months," says Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's EVP of sales and marketing. Yes, but why work out in your own home during cold winter months when you've got blankets, cocoa and Netflix?
The Wii Fit U bundle, which includes software, Wii Balance Board and Fit Meter accessory is priced at $89.99. If you've been diligently using your Wii Balance Board from the original Wii Fit days, another bundle with just Wii Fit U and Fit Meter is priced at $49.99. The Fit Meter as a standalone product is $19.99. Your health: priceless.

Nintendo's sorry the eShop didn't work properly over Christmas and has had to delay the release of Pokemon Bank and Poke Transporter as a result. When those apps, originally due 27th December, will now arrive, wasn't information Nintendo shared. The good news, however, is that the eShop is up and running on all systems again."We sincerely apologise for the recent inconsistencies and thank you again for your patience and support," blushed Nintendo on Twitter and on its official support site.

A Bravely Default demo is now available on the US eShop.
The demo features a unique side-quest that is not available in the full game, while character development progress will carry over to the main game.
Like other 3DS demos, the Bravely Default taster can only be launched 30 times. However, this limit can be extended by putting the handheld in sleep mode instead of powering it off entirely.
Nintendo of America has announced a Bravely Default release date of February 7, 2014.
Developed by Silicon Studio, the team behind 3D Dot Game Heroes, Bravely Default is a JRPG that utilises the familiar turn-based battle system seen in Square Enix's Final Fantasy titles while making use of the augmented reality features built into 3DS.
The 3DS game will be available at retail and on the eShop at launch. A collector's edition will include the game, an art book, 34 AR cards and the soundtrack.
Publisher Square Enix is to release a sequel to the game titled Bravely Second.

Super Nintendo shooter Contra 3: Alien Wars is bound for the European Wii U Virtual Console.
The game was originally released in the region in 1992 under the alternative title Super Probotector: Alien Rebels. The EU-only Probotector games starred robots instead of human soldiers Jimbo and Sully, but otherwise featured identical levels and gameplay.
The EU debut of Contra 3 on Wii U will be likely based on the US version of the game, where an English-language version was originally released.
It's EU Virtual Console release date is yet to be specified, according toGoNintendo.
Contra - or Probotector - is a 2D side-scrolling shooter series with single-player and two-player co-op modes that have you shooting your way through alien hordes and tackling notoriously difficult end-of-level bosses. Contra 3 is considered by many to be the best in the series.

[Adan] had an old Game Boy sitting around, and without anything better to do decided to investigate the link cable protocol with a microcontroller. He had a Stellaris Launchpad for the task, but initially had no project in mind. What he came up for this adventure in serial protocols is a first gen Pokemon trade spoofer that allows him to obtain pokemon without having two Game Boys, or for the weird ones out there, “friends.”
The Game Boy link protocol is extremely well documented, so getting data from the Game Boy to the Launchpad was as simple as a soldering up an old link cable connector to a piece of perf board. After figuring out the electronics, [Adan] looked at what happened when two Pokemon games tried to trade pokemon. When two Game Boys are linked, there are two in-game options: trade or battle. Looking at the data coming after the ‘trade’ option, [Adan] found something that could possibly be the data structure of the Pokemon being sent. He reverse-engineered this all by himself before discovering this is also well documented.
Bringing everything together, [Adan] figured out how to trade non-existent Pokemon with a small dev board. Right now he’s only transmitting Pokemon that are hard-coded on the Launchpad, but it’s very possible to transmit the Pokemon values in real-time over USB.
Thanks [Dan] for sending this in, and no, we don’t know what’s up with the influx of Pokemon posts over the last week. Video of the spoof below.

File this under "A Few Bad Apples Ruining The Bunch:" A time attack contest forNES Remix has been canceled due to players utilizing an exploit to decrease their times. The winner of the contest was set to have their run officially recorded by Nintendo, which obviously won't be happening.
In a comment on one of the game's Miiverse posts, the game's director, Koichi Hayashida, apologized for the inconvenience and thanked players for their time. "In the interest of being as fair as possible, we decided to terminate the event without recognizing the fastest time," Hayashida wrote. "We sincerely apologize for this matter, particularly because the vast majority of people played fairly."
The exploit seems to be related to repeatedly pausing the game, as there is a short delay between when gameplay resumes and the clock resumes. In other words: wibbly-wobbly, .

North American 3DS owners won't be graced with the presence of Bravely Default until February 7, but someone with a European copy of the game has noticed changes to outfits and ages of certain characters. The above image wasposted by an IGN forum member and showcases the same outfit in different versions of the game, with the Western release's outfits being on the left side.
The Final Fantasy Wiki also notes a boost of three years' age for the protagonists, making Bravely Default's youngest stars like the above Edea 18 years old instead of 15.
Of course, tweaking content during a game's journey to Western audiences is nothing new. The sprite for Siren was covered up in the US release of Final Fantasy 6, for instance. The age bump might also be an effort to avoid problems like those experienced by Dead or Alive: Dimensions, which was not released in parts of Europe due to some of its cast being underage while appearing in risque situations.

Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai announced via Miiversethat the upcoming Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. will each feature unique unlockable trophies, giving players an incentive to play the game both at home and on the go.
Sakurai revealed that the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. will feature character trophies taken from Nintendo's handheld games, while the Wii U edition's trophy set is largely inspired by console releases. The announcement further establishes the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. as a tribute to Nintendo's portable heritage, as the company previously announced that "there will be more stages based on handheld games [in the 3DS version], while themed stages from home console games will be on Wii U."
While both Super Smash Bros. games will feature the same roster of playable characters, each version boasts its own unique graphical style and other distinctive elements, ruling out the possibility of cross-platform play. A release date has not been announced for either version.

Creative Assembly's just-announced Alien: Isolation will not appear on Wii U any time soon, the developer has confirmed.PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions of the sci-fi survival horror were all revealed yesterday after months of leaks and speculation.Once again, it seemed, the Wii U had been overlooked. Today, Creative Assembly confirmed its decision not to develop the game for Nintendo's home console."Right now, we don't have plans to put the game on Wii U," Creative Assembly wrote onTwitter. No further explanation was given. It's still early days, but Eurogamer's first look at the game suggested it showed promise: "If measured on potential alone, perhaps the developer's already done enough to slay the beasts that haunt the franchise, and to have earned a new and exciting start for the Alien series," Stace Harman wrote in our Alien: Isolation preview.

Enterprising 3DS owners have discovered an exploit that will disable the handheld's region-locking.
The 3DS is the first Nintendo handheld family to pose restrictions on all of its games from other regions - meaning that you can't import games from Japan or North America unless you also have a 3DS from the same region to play them on.Happily, the method does not involve any tampering with the hardware itself - nor does it allow for the booting of pirated game ROMs.But you will need a certain amount of know-how to implement the solution, which is described in full over at the GBATemp forum (thanks, Kotaku). Both the 3DS and Wii U have region-based locks on games. The sole exception is the Nintendo 3DS Louvre Guide, which is region-free.Eurogamer has contacted Nintendo for comment.

Gateway 2.0B2 Launcher.dat (wont provide link at not allowed to GBATemp rules so no one please post)
+
Patched with the above Hex
=
Gateway Mode loads Retail Carts but with Region Free, you can even still use the EmuNAND so can have 7.1.0-14
this will not play ANY Roms, only official carts
You can use this without any need for a 3DS Flashcard also
so if you want your 4.1>4.5 Console to have EmuNAND and Region Free Patches only, this is for you
Enjoy
Download the File to Patch the Launhcer.dat
http://filetrip.net/3ds-downloads/ut...10-f32592.html
all you need is a DS Flashcard working on 3DS Firmwares 4.1>4.5 for this
because you can use the Gateway installer.nds to install the MSET Exploit and then load your new patched Launcher.dat
1. Download file
2. Copy GW's launcher.dat into the same folder as the *.exe
3. Start the *.exe. It should show "file patched successfully"
4. Copy the Launcher.dat into the Root of your microSD card
5. Install the Exploit (with the GW_INSTALLER.NDS)
6. Now you can go to Settings -> General Settings -> User settings -> DS profile
7. Your 3DS is region free
Ive noticed alot of News sites appear to be reporting this WRONG when coming to updating to 7.1.0
Once the patch is applied DO NOT USE THE NORMAL UPDATE METHOD
you must first create a EmuNAND otherwise you will update your normal NAND and loose the Exploit
Please follow the Instructions included in the Gateway files on how to create the EmuNAND

Walmart is now offering the limited-edition Mario & Luigi: Dream Team 3DS XL bundle for $149.99, $50 off its original price.
The bundle first arrived in the U.S. in December, when it retailed for $200. It includes a silver 3DS XL system with a gold outline of the plumber brothers printed on the front and a 4GB SD card with Mario & Luigi: Dream Team pre-installed.
Regular blue and red 3DS XL systems retail for $199.99, meaning buyers can score a limited-edition system and recent game for $50 less than a standard system by itself.
In our Mario & Luigi: Dream Team review, we found that it "excels at throwing up a constant barrage of funny, thrilling and game-altering surprises, all of which gel together with the kind of finesse and confidence that Nintendo fans have come to demand."
A variety of other limited-edition options, including a Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds 3DS XL bundle and Pokemon X & Y themed systems, have provided several tempting deals for prospective portable gamers within the past few months.

Nintendo's share price rose almost eleven per cent following China's decision to lift a ban on the sale of foreign video game consoles.
Pending government approval for individual companies, the suspension of the near 14-year ban will enable foreign firms such as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo to manufacture game consoles within Shanghai's free trade zone and sell their products across the country.
Following the announcement, Nintendo's share price rose nearly eleven per cent on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, from 14,380 ($136.92) to 15,850 ($150.90) by Tuesday's end, the BBC reports.
Nintendo had previously circumvented the ban with the iQue, an all-in-one Nintendo 64 console and controller that could be pre-loaded with games rather than using cartridges. It also enjoys success in China with iQue versions of its handhelds.
However, the lifting of the ban will allow Nintendo to legally release Wii and Wii U to a large and potentially lucrative new audience.
Chinese government ministries originally decided to ban consoles in 2000 due to fears about the impact games were having on young people, leading to an increase in popularity of PC gaming in internet cafes.
Despite the ban, consoles have remained available in China through illegal means, although most game players currently enjoy the pastime on PCs and smartphones.

North American soccer fans may finally have an opportunity to enjoy Japan's fan-favorite, anime-styled Inazuma Eleven, assuming a new listing on Nintendo's upcoming release calendar is to be trusted.
Inazuma Eleven, for those not in the know, is a series of roleplaying games developed by Level-5, the same studio responsible for the Professor Layton series as well as Dragon Quest 8 and its sequel. In short, this is a group that knows how to craft good RPGs, and despite the dissonance created by the phrase "soccer roleplaying game," the Inazuma Eleven series has proven a fan-favorite since its debut. The franchise has even spawned a successful manga adaptation though, like the games, those comics have never appeared in North America.
With that in mind, if you visit Nintendo's most recent release calendar, you'll find an unexpected listing entitled "Inazuma Eleven" for the 3DS handheld scheduled for North American release in the first quarter of 2014. That should be happy news, but as Tiny Cartridge states, "everything about this is weird." Despite indications that the game should appear in the very near future, Nintendo has yet to make any announcement regarding the series; that calendar listing is the only word we've seen of this mystery game. Furthermore, the listing makes no mention of which of the Inazuma Eleven entries the calendar might be referring to. It seems most likely that the game in question would be Inazuma Eleven 3 as that game was released in Europe in September, though there's nothing to guarantee this supposition.
We've attempted to contact Nintendo, first to see if this listing is an error, and if not, to ask which game is planned for imminent North American release. We've yet to receive a response.

Nintendo has obtained the entire patent portfolio of exergaming company InterAction Laboratories (a.k.a. IA Labs) following an unsuccessful 2010 lawsuitalleging that Nintendo's Wii and its peripherals infringed on IA's patents.
A trial court ruled in favor of Nintendo in 2012, ordering IA Labs to pay Nintendo's legal defense fees as a result. IA Labs lost a subsequent appeal last year, leading to a sheriff's sale of its assets when the company was unable to reimburse Nintendo's court costs. Nintendo then purchased IA Labs' remaining assets and patent portfolio during the sale, closing off the potential for further claims and lawsuits.
While Nintendo won this particular patent battle, a federal judge recently ruledin favor of Tomita Technologies International in a lawsuit over Nintendo's patent-infringing use of its glasses-free 3D technology. Nintendo was ordered to pay a percentage of revenue earned from 3DS hardware sales to Tomita as a result of the suit.

Creative Assembly’s upcoming survival horror outing Alien: Isolation looks unlikely to be making the jump to Wii U.
When asked about the possibility on Twitter, the game’s official Twitter account replied: “Right now, we don't have plans to put the game on Wii U.”
What makes it all the sadder is that the Wii U’s Gamepad seems like a perfect candidate for some distracting off-screen radar checking living room action.
Sega’s survival horror joins a vast catalogue of multiformat titles on the way in 2014 that are skipping Wii U including Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Thief, South Park, Dark Souls 2, The Witcher 3, Metal Gear Solid V, The Elder Scrolls Online, Destiny, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Dying Light and Mirror’s Edge 2.
Multiformat titles that ARE coming out on Wii U include Watch Dogs, The LEGO Movie and The Amazing Spider-man 2.

Luigi’s Mansion: 2 developer Next Level Games is more than happy pinning its flag to the Nintendo mast.
The Canadian indie is behind a number of Nintendo exclusives such as the Wii version of Punch-Out and Mario Strikers charged. It also developed the Wii versions of Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon and Transformers: Cybertron Adventures.
"We are doing only Nintendo products now," co-founder Jason Carr told Gamasutra. “We have worked with a lot of other companies before, and we're super happy with our relationship with Nintendo.
“There's no reason to look anywhere else. They keep giving us better and better IP to work with, and as long as we do our job and make good games for them there's no reason for us to venture out.”
Carr also highlighted the importance Nintendo places on developer happiness, adding: “Miyamoto-san… always asks us, ‘Is the team having fun? Are they having fun making the game?’
“It's really important that the team's enjoying themselves there, because they feel – and I agree – that if you're miserable it'll follow suit in your job.”
Last year Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata said that: ““If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results employee morale will decrease and I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world.”

BioWare developers have responded in good humour to the news that a limited edition Mass Effect 3 print was used as an episode backdrop in Marvel TV series Agents of Shield."I eagerly await our honorary Agents of Shield badges," Aaryn Flynn, general manager for BioWare's Mass Effect and Dragon Age studios in Edmonton and Montreal, wrote on Twitterlast night."Wait, you didn't get your helicarrier?" responded BioWare cinematic designer John Epler.Mass Effect producer Michael Gamble noted that imagery from the print had already been appropriated, bizarrely, for the album artwork of "Futuristic Mob" by rap duo The Jacka and Double-00.ABC and EA have remained silent on the matter.

Nintendo of America has confirmed a Yoshi's New Islandrelease date of March 14.
The 3DS platformer will be available in stores and from Nintendo eShop as a digital download.
Announced in April, the game is being produced by Takashi Tezuka, who served as creative director on 1995's original Yoshi's Island for SNES.
The game maintains series gameplay mechanics such as Yoshi's flutter jump, ground-pound and egg throw, while introducing new ones that make use of 3DS features like gyro sensor functionality.

[h=3]Features:[/h] - Yoshi's New Island keeps the series' fun game-play mechanics, such as Yoshi's Flutter Jump, Ground Pound and Egg Throw, while also offering new abilities. For example, use the giant-sized Mega Eggs to destroy objects, obtain coins and reveal hidden doors.
- Using the Nintendo 3DS system's gyro sensor functionality and the new binocular ability, players can move the system around to uncover hidden areas as well as better aim Mega Egg throws.
- Throughout the game, different worlds feature a variety of art styles, including oil, watercolor and crayon.

US 3DS sales have surpassed 11.5 million units, Nintendo claims.
The company said on Friday that the latest lifetime hardware sales figure is for the entire 3DS family of portable systems, which also includes 3DS XL and 2DS.
The new 3DS sales total is up from 10.5 million units reported in mid-December.
More than 16 million combined packaged and digital 3DS games were sold in 2013, an increase of more than 45 per cent over 2012's total, according to Nintendo of America.
"Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing.
"We're not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3DS are still to come."
Lifetime UK sales of 3DS, 3DS XL and the new 2DS combined topped two million units in December. The handheld device was also the best-selling game system of 2013.

Nintendo has revealed that King Dedede, the arch rival of Kirby, will be returning as a playable character in the fourth Super Smash Bros. game.
Dedede's first playable appearance in the series was in the third game, Wii title Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Rated by Smash Bros tournament players as an upper mid-tier character, Dedede's weight made him one of the best defensive characters in Brawl and one of the hardest in the game to knock out of the stage.
Dedede is only the latest in a number of returning characters who have been confirmed since the game's original reveal. Others include Luigi, Captain Olimar, Sonic, Princess Peach and Toon Link.
New characters will be making their Smash Bros debuts too. This Super Smash Bros trailer revealed Capcom's Mega Man and Animal Crossing's villager will be playable for the first time in the series, while Wii Fit Trainer was confirmed shortly afterwards.
Most recently, it was announced that Rosalina and Luma from Super Mario Galaxy will also feature for the first time.
Super Smash Bros. will launch on both Wii U and 3DS in 2014.

Tucked inside an innocuous report on just how well the 3DS performed during 2013 comes word of an upcoming handheld game entitled "Disney Magical World."
"Disney Magical World is a new game featuring dozens of Disney characters in a variety of Disney-themed worlds," reads Nintendo's description. "Players can customize their characters with hundreds of Disney-themed outfits and accessories, all while managing a café, planting crops and collecting Disney character cards. Players help different characters solve problems or find missing items."
While that's where the scant information on Disney Magical World ends, we do know that on March 11 it will appear on both the 3DS eShop and in retail stores.
Update: NeoGAF users believe that Disney Magical World is an English localization of Disney Magic Castle: My Magical Life, a game developed by Namco Bandai and released in Japan last July. Nintendo has yet to confirm or deny this idea.

Yoshi's New Island has a new release date of March 14 in North Ameria, after Nintendo upgraded its springtime window this morning. The game will be released at retail and on the eShop, although Nintendo didn't disclose a price in its announcement.
The 3DS follow-up to SNES game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island has a familiar look to it, with the green dino-hero once again saddled with a baby Mario and trailed by a line of eggs that he can chuck around the screen(s). No surprises, then, that series' original creator Takashi Tezuka has been involved with the game's development.

This is the coolest classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) hack we’ve seen in quite a while. What you’re seeing is called “Super Mario World (Total Control)” by [Masterjun]. Our first recommendation is that you , then come back here for an explanation. Similar to what we saw for Pokemon Yellow on Gameboy, [Masterjun] created entire Pong and Snake clones within Super Mario World. He also created a menu and ending screen, along with his trademark smiley face graphic. Even more amazing is that this was unveiled live on a real SNES running an unmodified game cartridge. [Masterjun] actually used dual multitap cables, effectively connecting 8 controllers to a SNES. This gave him enough bandwidth to quickly download his new binary through the controller ports alone.
Welcome to the world of Tool Assisted Speedruns (TAS), where emulators and scripts are used to create high-speed runs through video games. The runners often work frame by frame, painstakingly inputting commands to create the perfect run. Game bugs and glitches are often exploited in these speed runs. In fact, in runs such as this one, the speed run takes second place to showing off the exploit. The output of speed run creation is a script file of control inputs which can be executed on an emulator to “re-run” the TAS at any time. This script can also be saved to a PC or Raspberry Pi and played back into the controller port of a real game system. A PIC based hardware translator is used to convert the data to NES or SNES controller format. As one might expect, these scripts run open loop. With no feedback from the running game, they can and do become desynchronized due to differences in console hardware, such as the tolerance of the oscillator crystal. When everything is in sync and does work , the results are awesome.

The majority of Level-5's Guild 01 series has been made available on the 3DS eShop, but the last game in the series was absent from the publisher's initiallocalization announcement. That missing title is Rental Bukiya de Omasse, a game in which players manage a shop that crafts and sells weapons to passing adventurers. While the game currently isn't available in an English format, the Australian Classification Board has assigned it a PG rating, suggesting a localization treatment is in Rental Bukiya's future.
We suspected the initial arrival of the Guild 01 series after Level-5 filed trademarks in the US for two Guild 01 titles, Liberation Maiden and Crimson Shroud. Level-5 confirmed the localization almost two months after those trademarks were noticed. While the Australian Classification Board is a different entity, its early ratings of Sega's 3D-ready line of classics for the eShop gave proved to be telling of their eventual NA debut. Hopefully this instance will play out similarly so that Rental Bukiya can open up shop stateside.

It's no secret that some game developers dislike the Wii U -- performance issues, limited internet features and relatively slow console sales have made it tough for companies to justify support. But have you ever wondered what, exactly, went wrong? Wonder no more, as an anonymous developer has just shared many of the gritty details with Eurogamer. The insider claims that the sluggish CPU has been a concern since the beginning, and that the programming tools (not to mention feedback from Japan) have been sub-par. Nintendo's inexperience with online services is also very clear. The company created chaos for Wii U developers with network code that only arrived at the last minute, and a key team hadn't even tried PlayStation Network or Xbox Live before the Wii U's launch. Price cutsand high-quality first-party games have helped Nintendo since then, but the source suggests that the firm can only do so much to court third-party developers entranced by more powerful hardware.

We are investigating the issue about the recent blue screen bootrom error some users have reported, and we have discovered this is caused by memory corruption due to flawed copying or modifications of our official Launcher firmware.
We can reassure our users that our official (unmodified) Launcher firmware is free from such memory corruption and is 100% safe to use.
We specifically warn users to:
- Avoid clone Launcher firmware
- Avoid the region-free patches made by Normmatt
We have also heard the request for region free in Classic mode, and we will add this feature to our future firmware updates.
We feel sorry for the users that are affected by this error, but we have issued warnings in the past about the clone cards for this exact reason.
We pride ourselves to do thorough testing before release, the same cannot be said for our so-called “competitors”.

But indies defend console, saying criticisms only reflect early iterations of SDK and praise Nintendo support
The Wii U is difficult to develop for compared to other consoles and has an underpowered CPU for a new-gen console, an anonymous developer has claimed.
In a tell-all to Digital Foundry, the developer, who worked with an early version of the hardware and development kits for a launch title, claimed that while other consoles had mature tool chains that could be integrated with their development environment, the Wii U made it difficult to compile and run code.
The developer said that even though Nintendo had provided an integration of their development tools into Visual Studio, broken features meant the studio instead had to fix the issues, rather than just focusing on game development.
The anonymous game maker added that contacting the console firm had also been difficult, and answers to queries would often take as long as a week due to translation issues.
Citing problems with the console's CPU, the dev claimed that for their studio's particular game, certain features had to be cut back as it was not powerful enough.
On a positive note however, the GPU was said to be "very capable", and could potentially be used to pick up the slack from the CPU.
"There was even some discussion on trying to utilise the GPU via compute shaders (GPGPU) to offload work from the CPU - exactly the approach I expect to see gain traction on the next-gen consoles - but with very limited development time and no examples or guidance from Nintendo, we didn't feel that we could risk attempting this work," said the developer.
"The GPU is better than on PS3 or Xbox 360, but leagues away from the graphics hardware in the PS4 or Xbox One."
The developer also stated early concerns over Nintendo's online network and MiiVerse, and what was labelled only a "partially developed OS" just weeks before the launch of the Wii U - which required the infamous day one patch for console owners to fix it.
In a scathing assessment, the anonymous game maker said Nintendo was struggling with third-party support due to the aforementioned tool chain problems, communication issues with the firm itself and low sales.
"We eventually released our game and it was generally well-received, so the management sat back to see what kind of sales figures we would get for all our efforts. Without going into detail it would be fair to say that the numbers we were seeing were less than impressive. In fact we would be lucky to make back all the money that we had invested in making the game in the first place, and although the management publicly supported the Wii U platform, it is unlikely that we would ever release another Wii U title."
[h=5]Case for the defence[/h]Despite the criticism, a few developers have come out in defence of the Wii U.
Nami Tentou founder and Ping 1.5 developer Christopher Arnold said most of the complaints in the article referred to pre-retail SDK problems, and that the post-release SDK does not contain any of the issues mentioned.
"Most of the main complaints pointed at in the article from the dev is aimed at pre-retail release SDK problems," he tweeted.
"I can safely say that the post release SDK kit given to developers now do not contain any of the listed problems and being an early on developer on any new hardware will pose challenges to those unfamiliar. Programming and coding is most of the time trial-and-error.
"Wii U game development takes the same amount of work and attention as a Xbox 360 or PS3 game development. They've done their process of making their API understandable and useful to seasoned programmers. Wii U development = any other game console development time."
In the latest issue of Develop, Nyamyam studio co-founder and Tengami developer Jennifer Schneidereit said the self-publishing process for the Wii U "had been really good so far", and the firm had worked with the indie to ensure a smooth development process and help the team overcome any hurdles.
It should be noted that in an attempt to make development easier for some indies, Nintendo has also released its Web Framework, a development environment used to make Wii U software with HTML5 and JavaScript
"There’s a level of contact that just doesn’t exist when working with Apple for example," she said.
"In order to self-publish on the Wii U I started by signing up to Nintendo’s developer program. It took a few days for the confirmation to come through. From there we soon had access to the developer portal and all the tools and development documentation.
"Soon after we got two Wii U dev kits sent over from the US. These initial steps were very easy and each step had a clear contact person for me to reach out to in case I had any questions. I was a little surprised that there was so much personal contact between us as a developer and Nintendo early on, which is unusual in this day and age and I definitely appreciated it."
What are your thoughts on developing for the Wii U? Have you encountered any difficulties? Are you happy with the hardware and development kits?

If you haven't yet had the chance to delve into Link's latest dimension-hopping journey, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds for the Nintendo 3DS is $29.99 at Fry's this week, making it a good time to catch up on one of last year's greatest games.
A Link Between Worlds builds on the structure that defined the Super NES classic The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, taking place in the same overworld and featuring many elements familiar to series fans. The game emerges as a worthy adventure in its own right, however, thanks to its ingenious item-rental mechanic and open-ended quest that gives players the freedom to explore Hyrule and its dark counterpart Lorule at their own pace.
A Link Between Worlds is available for $29.99 at Fry's through January 16.

Twenty years after it earned notoriety as the sole unlicensed game on the Super Nintendo (not to mention a Christian-themed, first-person shooter),Super Noah's Ark 3D has returned to the console.
For those unaware, Super Noah's Ark 3D isn't a very good game, but it is rare and collectors view it as an interesting piece of trivia given that the game was built on top of id Software's Wolfenstein 3D engine. Creator Wisdom Tree was refused a license for SNES development due to the game's overt religious imagery, so after relying on a special pass-through cartridge designed to circumvent the anti-piracy measures of the SNES, the game was released via mail order and in certain specialty stores. Nintendo's restrictions against religious imagery no longer apply to the SNES, allowing retro developer Piko Interactive to license and re-release the game on a proper SNES cartridge.
If you visit Piko Interactive's site, you'll find the game listed at $40. That price is for the cartridge by itself, though if you'd like a box and manual to go along with your new old game, the price jumps to $70.

CaH4e3 updated his site with the following message:
- PEC-586 Pyramid Education Computer (Unl)[U][!]. One of my last totally forgotten dumps, even if you have seen this before more than one time, - The Educational Computer PEC-586 Pyramid by Dongda Company. Mapper itself was not so hard to emulate, the most crazy thing about this cartridge is that it uses its own video mode, 1-bpp plain bitmap mode. There were some others are popping out in China, similar to this one, so with the help of our Chinese friends, we emulate finally it's video mode. The main goal of this mode is that you can write 1-bit tiles into tilemap area, but no need to write NT anymore. So 8K or CHR-RAM is enough to cover the whole screen at once with this bitmap.
The last barrier before release was its keyboard. It's visually identical to Subor, but operation is different. So I was need to write another one keyboard support to FCEUmm and FCEUX. So I did it finally and it mostly works, besides still need keys layout corrections.
Most interesting, that this system has LPT and Audio-jack connectors on the cartridge itself. Don't know, why it's done, since the cart is useless without the console and vice versa.
There are some more systems on the same hardware exists, mentioned above Chinese version with expanded PRG ROM, and one more interesting Educational Computer called "Sonic REC-9388". The last one has its own software divided into carts-modules and which can be inserted into one of three internal mini-cartridge slots. Both Chinese ones and Sonic use it's own keyboard hardware so can't be emulated with the same PEC-586 keyboard.
- NARC (R) [!], Rush'n Attack (R) [!]. A couple of years ago I released bad, but mostly fixed and restored ROM of the Russian version of the game "NARC". Now since I have a new working copy I did redump and you can play it without glitches now. In addition, another Russian translation from the same 1995-1996 years, Russian version of Rush'n Attack.

Once again, the Revival of Pokemon Gold’s beta and alpha stages presses on, and to an extent of reviving the Safari Zone!
The Safari Zone has all the unused fleeing Pokemon, and many Pokemon you would see in the Red/Blue Safari Zone but is still having more Pokemon added. It’s even accessible!
This hack contains all but one Pokemon, the Japanese Jynx and has every Kanto Pokemon’s beta name. Every map is finished, and even a few unused things are re-used but there are still a few to be done that require implementing.
This hack is updated frequently, with 1.3 being the biggest not including 1.3b, 1.3b2 and 1.3SilentHills since they were betas/indevs.
The picture shown is the player’s edited sprite which is now a girl that is meant to be similar to the beta girl.
The Related URL is the Facebook Page for this ROM Hack where all the latest updates, help ads, bug announcements to warn others and everything to do with the game’s development are.
I hope you will enjoy this hack.

Wii-Tac-Toe is a Tic-Tac-Toe game for the Nintendo Wii. It was programmed in C++ using devkitPro along with GRRLIB.
The game can be played alone vs the CPU or with a friend using one Wii Remote controller. The game AI does not always do the same moves, so the fun never stop.
To win the game, you have to place three marks (O or X) in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row. If the grid is filled completely and no one has won, well, it's a tie game. Start over and try to beat your opponent.
Version 0.8
- Could now be played with 2 Wii Remotes
- View FPS when pressing the + button
- meta.xml is fixed
- Library update
- libogc 1.8.11
- libfat 1.0.11
- Mini-XML 2.6
- UTF-8 CPP 2.3.4
- Boost 1.52
- GRRLIB 4.3.2
- FreeType 2.4.4
- libpngu (libpng 1.6.8 and zlib 1.2.8)

A GameCube Memory Card manager.GameCube/Wii Memory Manager is an application to backup Nintendo GameCube savegames.
Gcmm is a project started by dsbomb and justb, which is based on Askot's modification to add SD support to the mcbackup libogc example.
I (suloku) have updated the code to newest libraries to port it to the Wii system, and what I find more important: restoring savegames now works properly.

AReim1982 continues to improve ScummVM Wii and already offers an update. After making the sources compatible with the latest development libraries devkitPPC, libogc and libfat, he now addresses bugs and has just correct one that affected the function of "solid addition" games that caused a dump without code course. This is now fixed and therefore can scan the parent directory containing all your games to add to the ScummVM simply the world. You can activate by holding UP (d-pad of the wiimote held vertically), the "Add" button becomes "Solid Add" button. The scan time course depend on the number of sets contained in the parent folder, so be patient.
Feel free to report bugs you might encounter directly on official forums Scummvm.org. ScummVM Wii 1.6.0-test candidate beta3 Official website: http://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?t = 13357

More than a year after its launch, Wii U still lacks one of its main system features in Europe: its cunningly-named electronic programme guide TVii.
A button for the feature has been present on the system's pause menu since the console was released in November 2012, although pressing it only brings up an error message.Nintendo had previously promised to launch the feature in Europe during 2013 - which has obviously now come and gone."We would like to apologise that we were unable to bring the Nintendo TVii service to Europe in 2013 as originally planned," the company wrote on its official site (thanks, Nintendo Life)."Please continue to keep an eye out for further announcements regarding this service in the near future."TVii works with your existing TV channels and any streaming subscriptions you may have (in the US, services such as Hulu Plus and Amazon Instant Video). You can use the service to select and launch programmes, then watch via your TV or on the GamePad itself.

Comic Studio, a 3DS app that lets users draw their own comics, is set to launch on the eShop in Japan this week. Developer Collavier has confirmed its intentions to launch the app outside of Japan, yet couldn't provide Siliconerawith any kind of timetable for the western debut.
Comic Studio allows users to control the panel layout for each page and, with stylus in hand, fully illustrate their comic creations. Everything must be drawn free-hand, though Comic Studio does provide an ample series of brush options for more personalized style. You can also take a picture with your 3DS and load it into the app for reference when drawing and, once your creation is final, you can export the .jpg to your SD card or share it through email using the 3DS browser.
Comic Studio launches in Japan on January 15 for 800 yen ($8). Specifics on layout, UI and comic creation can be found over on the developer's website, provided you can get some help with translation.

An error or a wonderfully generous sale? Either way, a host of top Nintendo IP can be had for pennies on the Nintendo Store right now.
Digital versions of Wii U titles The Wonderful 101 and Pikmin 3 are currently available for £8.95 each while Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team are currently priced at £7.95 each.
There are a few other discounts too, such as 3DS title LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins for £6.95.
All the deals can be found through this link.
If the sale is deliberate it’s surprising to see Nintendo so savagely undercutting the High Street prices of key titles – not that it’s that easy to find Wii U or even 3DS games on the High Street anymore, of course…
UPDATE: Although we’ve not heard anything officially from Nintendo, many of the prices have now been raised to their previous levels, suggesting it was indeed an error. However, some of those who did manage to place an order at the discounted price are saying they HAVE received their download codes.

GBA.js Git (2014/01/14) is released. Jeffrey Pfau released a new GameBoy Advance emulator. The project began last July. The first prototype took him five weeks. But it has worked for several weeks and several hours a day online prior to the first public version. The program runs on JavaScript. It is available online and works in a modern web browser. It runs on Chrome 20, Safari 6.0, Firefox 15 + (without sound) or Opera 12. It should also run on Internet Explorer 10. Firefox and Opera are particularly slow, it is better to use Safari or Chrome.
As a matter of law, no rom is provided on the official website. However, you can load these roms on your machine. The emulator does not handle compressed files. So please only download roms decompressed. The application sometimes crashes if the file has special characters.
Currently all parts of the GameBoy Advance hardware are implemented. You can save and load backups, send on your machine or your machine. GBA.js is able to take screenshots. It can set the emulation paused. It supports games containing real-time clocks (eg Pokemon).
GBA.js Git Changelog:
- Add proper support for GamePad API and untested support for Mozilla GamePad API

Disney Magical World shipments surpassed the 500,000 mark in Japan, proving that as far as the 3DS game is concerned, it's not such a small world after all. Alright, we admit we shoehorned that reference in, so try not to take the Mickey.
The news (via Gematsu) comes just after Disney announced the game for North America; for the record, it's been out in Japan since August 2013, albeit under the less catchy but even cheerier moniker of Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life. As for what such a happy life comprises, it's everything from meeting your favorite Disney characters and dressing up like them, to running a cafe and cultivating crops.
If you can't wait to slip into a Minnie dress, the good news is that Disney Magical World hits retail shelves and the eShop in North America on April 11.

A programming loophole in the Super NES platformer Super Mario World has given speedrunners the ability to build and execute arbitrary code during gameplay, leading to the creation of fully playable minigames built on top of existing cartridge assets.
An in-game hack takes advantage of a convoluted glitch that was in order to finish the game in an impossibly quick span of time using software emulators. Starting at the 1:40 mark in the video above, the hack is deployed, and new code is written using an array of eight emulated Super NES controllers -- no keyboard input or explicit programming language is used to create these new minigames.
The discovery follows up on a [video=youtube;3UnB1fomvAw]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5T81yHkHtI"]similar hack[/URL] for Pokemon Yellow that allows players to overwrite the game's code using only the Game Boy's controller input. Fans have since used tool-assisted speedrun tech in order to produce in-game art and other stunned onlookers. Have speedrunners gone too far this time? Is there anything we can do to stop them?

Things are still a bit slooooooow as far as new eShop content goes - that headline covers all of this week's new releases - but hey, let's pick apart the bones.
Unepic has been around since 2011, but today marks its debut on Wii U. It's a platformer with RPG elements, evoking classic D&D and NES-style gameplay - or, in the words of Nintendo's own blurb, "Unepic is a mixture of platform game, role game and joke that takes place in a huge castle of medieval fantasy. It is set in the eighty's style, but completed with the most actual features."
Ahem. As for F1 Race Stars Powered Up Edition, the Wii U edition of Codies' cutesy karter adds four tracks, nine accessory packs, and motion and tilt controls for a GamePad steering wheel. Also, there's Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest to keep the Virtual Console ticking along.
Lastly but not leastly, Etrian Odyssey Untold is half-off at $20 until January 27.

UPDATE: Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has apologised to shareholders for the company's business performance but pledged to stay in office, Nikkei reports (as translated by NeoGAF).Iwata admitted responsibility for today's poor financial results but said that the first order of business was restoring momentum as soon as possible, and that he will stay as president to see this through.ORIGINAL STORY: Nintendo has cut dramatically the number of Wii U and 3DS consoles it expects to sell by the end of the financial year.Wii U's estimated sales are down from 9 million to 2.8m, while 3DS is down from 18m to 13.5m.The company now expects another full year loss.Net income for the year had been pegged at a profit of 55 billion yen (£322m), but is now expected to be a net loss of 25 billion yen (£146m).The launch of Wii U hardware bundles and key games such as Super Mario 3D World helped the struggling platform a little, but the console still fell short of Nintendo's recovery plans "by a large margin"."In particular, sales in the US and European markets in which we entered the year-end sales season with a hardware markdown were significantly lower than our original forecasts, with both hardware and software sales experiencing a huge gap from their targets," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata explained today."In addition, we did not assume at the beginning of the fiscal year that we would perform a markdown for the Wii U hardware in the US and European markets. This was also one of the reasons for lower sales and profit estimates."It's somewhat surprising to see how much the 3DS also underperformed - despite being2013's the top-selling hardware platform in the US and over here in the UK it still did not meet Nintendo's lofty overseas targets."Nintendo 3DS did not reach our sales targets in the overseas markets, and we were ultimately unable to achieve our goal of providing a massive sales boost to Nintendo 3DS in the year-end sales season," Iwata said."Using the US market as an example, Nintendo 3DS became the top-selling platform in the last calendar year... however, the estimated annual sales of the Nintendo 3DS hardware remain significantly lower than our initial forecast at the beginning of the fiscal year."Despite the losses, there has so far been no indication that company president Satoru Iwata's job is in danger.More details of the company's financial situation will be published at the end of the month, Nintendo concluded.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has insisted he will not resign from his position despite accepting responsibility for the company's abject commercial performance.
On Friday, the company slashed its Wii U sales forecast from 9 to 2.8 million units - a dramatic reduction that it expects will swing its full-year results from profit to loss.
Iwata joined Nintendo's corporate planning division in 2000Iwata apologised to shareholders in Kyoto for the extent of the under-performance, and insisted his intention was to rapidly reverse the company's fortunes. According to a report from Japan news groupNikkei, the Nintendo executive insisted he would not resign.
Sales of both Wii U and the 3DS handheld are significantly under expectations. However, throughout 2013 the 3DS was the best-selling console across the US, Japan and many parts of Europe. The system sold record numbers on certain occasions.
But the company's Wii U business is currently in gradual decline, with its first six months outperforming the most recent six. Globally, software for the original Wii still outsells the Wii U's. Meanwhile, the release of Super Mario 3D World - an acclaimed game that was expected to drive sales - has not stimulated the market, with the game failing to pick up meaningful sales in the west.

Nintendo is doing plenty of soul-searching in light of its recent abject commercial performance.
On Friday, the company slashed its annual Wii U sales forecast from 9 million to 2.8 million units - a dramatic reduction that it expects will swing its full-year results from profit to loss.
"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata said on Friday during a press conference attended by Bloomberg. "We must take a sceptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.
"We are thinking about a new business structure," Iwata added. "Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."
Investors and analysts have urged Nintendo to broaden its horizons and boost profits by embracing smartphones on multiple occasions over the past few years, but Iwata has always insisted that his responsibility is to plan for the long term, not simply to make a quick buck.
Iwata also said today that there are no current plans to reshuffle Nintendo's management team, and that any announcement regarding potential pay cuts will be made when the company posts its third-quarter financial results in late January.

Nintendo TVii, a free service which allows users to connect to internet-based video on demand services like Amazon Instant Video, Netflix and Hulu Plus, as well as cable and dish networks through the Wii U, has been delayed in Europe. Nintendo TVii was scheduled to arrive in European markets by the end of 2013, but almost three weeks into 2014, TVii is still a no-go.
Nintendo has apologized for the delay on their UK website. "We would like to apologise that we were unable to bring the Nintendo TVii service to Europe in 2013 as originally planned," a post reads. No specifics were given as to when the service might make its debut. Instead, users are asked to "please continue to keep an eye out for further announcements regarding this service in the near future."

Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver, the 2010 DS remakes of the Game Boy games that added the train-as-you-move Pokewalker device, can now be relived sonically. The 270-song Pokemon HeartGold & Pokemon SoulSilver: Super Music Collection soundtrack is available for $9.99 on iTunes. Good thing you don't have to capture those tracks individually!
The new release follows the availability of soundtracks for PokemonFireRed/LeafGreen and Pokemon X/Y earlier this year. If you're still holding out for jams from other Pokeregions, remember that we can expect to seesoundtracksfor the following duos in 2014: Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, Pokemon Black/White and Pokemon Black 2/White 2.
If you don't already own HeartGold/SoulSilver but still want to kick up those childhood memories, this is a decent alternative from paying the steadily-increasing entry price for new copies of either game.

Platinum Games originally wanted to include playable Mii characters in its Wii U superhero action game The Wonderful 101, but the feature didn't make the cut in the final version of the game, director Hideki Kamiya revealed this week via Twitter.
Kamiya hopes to feature player-made Miis in a potential sequel, however. Though a follow-up project has not been announced, Kamiya assures fans that he will directThe Wonderful 102, if it ever comes to fruition.
The Wonderful 101 was one of the first games announced for Nintendo's Wii U console, and our own Ludwig Kietzmann named it as one of his favorites from last year. Platinum's current project, Bayonetta 2, is set for a Wii U release later this year.

With Nintendo having to slash its forecasts following weak Wii U sales comes the contemplation of new business strategies. While not announcing any definitive changes in the company's direction, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata admitted at a press conference today in Osaka, Japan that the company is "thinking about a new business structure," Bloomberg reports.
"Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business," Iwata said. "It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone."
Nintendo took its 3DS projections for the fiscal year down from 18 million to 13.5 million. However, the bigger hit came with decreased projections for its home console, taking the Wii U down from 9 million to 2.8 million for the year.
"We cannot continue a business without winning," Iwata added. "We must take a skeptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for 20,000 yen or 30,000 yen, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each."

Nintendo needs to bring its rich slate of IP to rival platforms, US analyst Michael Pachter has said.
The call to go third party comes following today’s significantsales forecast revisions from the platform holder and the insistence from president Saturo Iwata that he will not resign.
“The Wii U has clearly not resonated with consumers,” he said on Twitter. “3DS selling ‘fine’, but is down around 50 per cent from average DS levels last decade.
“Nintendo software is still great and will continue to be. However, if software remains proprietary, sales are limited when they sell fewer hardware units. The first step to recovery is to acknowledge the problem. I have not seen anything from Mr Iwata that acknowledges that there is a problem.”
Pachter has for many years now called for serious revisions to Nintendo’s business strategy.
Nintendo can still lay claim to some of gaming’s most cherished IP, with brands such as Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon (co-owned), Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Kirby, Starfox, F-Zero, Metroid, Fire Emblam, Wario Ware, Wii Sports, Brain Training, Pikmin, Nintendogs, Advance Wars and Donkey Kong to its name.

Becoming a third party publisher is not the easy answer to reversing Nintendo’s ongoing problems, president Satoru Iwata has argued.
Iwata vowed not to resign earlier today after Nintendo cut its sales predictions for Wii U and 3DS, leading Michael Pachter to call for the platform holder to take its IP onto rival platforms.
Now Bloomberg reports that while Iwata concedes that a restructuring of sorts is needed at the Kyoto firm, he doesn’t believe that abandoning its hardware offer is the answer.
“We are thinking about a new business structure,” Iwata stated. “Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It’s not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.
“We cannot continue a business without winning. We must take a sceptical approach whether we can still simply make game players, offer them in the same way as in the past for ¥20,000 or ¥30,000, and sell titles for a couple of thousand yen each.”

January 20th, 2014, 00:39 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has released a lengthy statement clarifying the events that led up today’s damaging sales forecast reductions.
Nintendo this morning reduced its Wii U unit sales forecast for the current financial year from 9m units to just 2.8m units. It also cut its 3DS sales prediction from 18m units to 13.5m.
Here are some highlights:
“As year-end sales constitute an extremely high proportion of the annual sales volume in the video game industry and the annual financial performance of a video game company rests heavily on its performance in the year-end sales season, we put in place various promotional activities in order to promote sales and expand our audience in the year-end sales season of the previous calendar year. However, it is now expected that our sales will fail to meet our previous forecast by a large margin.”
“Nintendo 3DS continued to show strong sales in the Japanese market. The unit sales for Nintendo 3DS in the previous calendar year amounted to approximately 4.9 million units, falling short of our aim of five million units by a small margin. However, as I explained before, given that every gaming device from the year 2000 onwards apart from Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS did not reach sales of four million units even in their peak years, we can say that the sales figure for Nintendo 3DS in the last calendar year was indeed very high.”
“Outside Japan, while its market share increased as we continued to release compelling titles throughout the year, Nintendo 3DS did not reach our sales targets in the overseas markets, and we were ultimately unable to achieve our goal of providing a massive sales boost to Nintendo 3DS in the year-end sales season. In Europe, while the individual markets showed different results, France was the only market in which we experienced relatively strong sales, and we failed to attain our initial sales levels by a large margin in other countries.”
“Wii U sales showed some progress in the year-end sales season as we released various compelling titles from the summer onwards, launched hardware bundles at affordable price points and also performed a markdown of the hardware in the US and European markets; however, they fell short of our targeted recovery by a large margin. In particular, sales in the US and European markets in which we entered the year-end sales season with a hardware markdown were significantly lower than our original forecasts, with both hardware and software sales experiencing a huge gap from their targets. In addition, we did not assume at the beginning of the fiscal year that we would perform a markdown for the Wii U hardware in the US and European markets. This was also one of the reasons for lower sales and profit estimates.”
Here’s the statement in full:
We would like to explain the modifications of the full-year financial and dividend forecasts announced today.
We revised our full-year consolidated financial forecasts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014 that we announced at the beginning of the fiscal year by estimating new net sales of 590 billion yen against the initially projected net sales of 920 billion yen, new operating loss of 35 billion yen against the initially projected operating profit of 100 billion yen, new ordinary income of five billion yen against the initially projected ordinary income of 90 billion yen, and new net loss of 25 billion yen against the initially projected net income of 55 billion yen. Foreign currency assumptions for the end of the fiscal year have been revised from 90 yen to 100 yen per U.S. dollar and from 120 yen to 140 yen per euro.
Revised consolidated unit sales projections are, as outlined in “Notice of Full-Year Financial Forecast and Dividend Forecast Modifications,” 13.5 million units of the Nintendo 3DS hardware and 66.0 million units of the Nintendo 3DS software, 1.2 million units of the Wii hardware and 26.0 million units of the Wii software, and 2.8 million units of the Wii U hardware and 19.0 million units of the Wii U software. There are no modifications to our initial projections for the Nintendo DS hardware and software.
As for the estimated annual dividend, if the actual consolidated financial results are in line with our modified financial forecasts, there will be no annual dividend per share. However, on the basis of our dividends paid in the last two years, we have set a minimum of 100 yen for the year-end and annual dividend per share for this fiscal year.
As year-end sales constitute an extremely high proportion of the annual sales volume in the video game industry and the annual financial performance of a video game company rests heavily on its performance in the year-end sales season, we put in place various promotional activities in order to promote sales and expand our audience in the year-end sales season of the previous calendar year. However, it is now expected that our sales will fail to meet our previous forecast by a large margin.
Giving a detailed explanation on our sales performance in and leading up to the year-end sales season by platform, Nintendo 3DS continued to show strong sales in the Japanese market. The unit sales for Nintendo 3DS in the previous calendar year amounted to approximately 4.9 million units, falling short of our aim of five million units by a small margin. However, as I explained before, given that every gaming device from the year 2000 onwards apart from Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS did not reach sales of four million units even in their peak years, we can say that the sales figure for Nintendo 3DS in the last calendar year was indeed very high. However, outside Japan, while its market share increased as we continued to release compelling titles throughout the year, Nintendo 3DS did not reach our sales targets in the overseas markets, and we were ultimately unable to achieve our goal of providing a massive sales boost to Nintendo 3DS in the year-end sales season. Using the U.S. market as an example, Nintendo 3DS became the top-selling platform in the last calendar year, according to NPD, an independent market research company, with its cumulative sales exceeding 11.5 million units; however, the estimated annual sales of the Nintendo 3DS hardware remain significantly lower than our initial forecast at the beginning of the fiscal year. In Europe, while the individual markets showed different results, France was the only market in which we experienced relatively strong sales, and we failed to attain our initial sales levels by a large margin in other countries.
Wii U sales, on the other hand, showed some progress in the year-end sales season as we released various compelling titles from the summer onwards, launched hardware bundles at affordable price points and also performed a markdown of the hardware in the U.S. and European markets; however, they fell short of our targeted recovery by a large margin. In particular, sales in the U.S. and European markets in which we entered the year-end sales season with a hardware markdown were significantly lower than our original forecasts, with both hardware and software sales experiencing a huge gap from their targets. In addition, we did not assume at the beginning of the fiscal year that we would perform a markdown for the Wii U hardware in the U.S. and European markets. This was also one of the reasons for lower sales and profit estimates.
We therefore modified our unit sales estimates in accordance with our performance in the year-end sales season and after the turn of the year, and the drop in software sales had the largest negative effect on our profit forecasts.
Also, yen appreciation against the U.S. dollar and euro, which on one hand affects dollar-based and euro-based sales positively, also increases costs incurred in foreign currencies when they are converted to Japanese yen. While the yen remained very strong for a sustained period of time, Nintendo made a concerted effort to pay more of its manufacturing costs in U.S. dollars in order to minimize its impact. However, as the era of the exceedingly strong yen concluded, our domestic business, which had been progressing at a relatively strong pace, has seen an increase in manufacturing costs, while our overseas business, which is yet to reach its full potential, has not fully benefited from the weaker yen yet. In terms of our profitability in the current fiscal year, therefore, we were unable to sufficiently take advantage of the weaker yen.
As for advertising expenses, and research and development expense forecasts, we made revisions to increase them by eight billion yen and 15 billion yen respectively from their forecasts made at the beginning of this fiscal year. We expect advertising expenses to increase due to the effect of the expenses incurred in foreign currencies to be converted into Japanese yen by using weaker yen rates. The estimated increase of research and development expenses is based on reflecting our ongoing enhancement of the development structure, and new research and development activities. These increases contributed to lowered estimated profit forecasts.
We expect that we will post ordinary income despite the operating loss situation. This is because we now assume that the yen will be weaker than our original assumptions at the beginning of the fiscal year, and re-evaluation of assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies owned by Nintendo Co., Ltd. at the end of the fiscal year as well as foreign exchange gains at the time of cash receipts and conversions of foreign funds into yen, among other factors, are expected to exceed the projected operating loss.
On the other hand, we expect to post a net loss despite expecting ordinary income mainly because we need to reverse deferred tax assets in relation to the losses carried over from the previous fiscal years mainly in the United States, as we can no longer expect our financial performance to recover in the current fiscal year.
We will provide more information on our short-term as well as mid-term prospects at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing to be held on January 30, 2014, which will take place in Tokyo a day after we announce our financial results for the third quarter.
These are all of the explanations about modifications of our full-year financial and dividend forecasts.

The Wedbush analyst sees Nintendo ditching the Wii U and pulling a Sega, but only for a limited time before it launches new hardware
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
When a company is in trouble, everyone in the industry seemingly comes out of the woodwork to offer up advice. Unsurprisingly, following the bad fiscal report from Nintendo today and the word from CEO Satoru Iwata that the company is examining a new business structure, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has chimed in, commenting in his latest note to investors that it's time for Nintendo to abandon the Wii U.
"It is clear to us that the old Nintendo model of proprietary hardware supported by compelling proprietary software is broken," he said. "Nintendo's proprietary software continues to be first rate, but its console hardware is not competitive; the Wii U is under-powered relative to next generation offerings from Sony and Microsoft, and is not competitively priced (priced similar to current generation offerings from the competition). We don't think Nintendo should exit the console hardware business, but think it should consider getting out of the Wii U business, and consider going back to the drawing board on consoles. Nintendo has a console in the marketplace that isn't working, and if it continues to tilt at windmills, its software sales will suffer."
So what's the solution for Nintendo? In Pachter's opinion, the company must swallow its pride and start publishing its first-rate software on competing platforms. Then, once Nintendo is ready to bring a more competitive console to the market, it can withdraw its support from the other systems and focus on its own platform again.
"Under its current business model, if Nintendo discontinued the Wii U, it would sell no console software. We believe that it should reconsider its 'all proprietary, all the time' model, and should consider making its proprietary console software available on other platforms until it is able to release a new console. Once Nintendo has a new console on the market, we think it would make sense for the company to pull all of its software from the PS4 and Xbox One, and go back to being a proprietary software maker. In the meantime, we believe that the company has a problem that it is not acknowledging or addressing," he stated.
Additionally, Pachter believes it's high time that Nintendo give in to the world of smartphones, but only with legacy software: "The company's handheld woes are far more complicated. The handheld business is not failing, but Nintendo handhelds have lost share to mobile and tablet games, and the company will have trouble getting that back. We believe that Nintendo would benefit immensely from embracing mobile and tablet, placing GBA games on those platforms for paid download ($4.99 - 9.99) and developing a broader audience, then releasing current games on the 3DS and exploiting its larger customer base by convincing them to buy a 3DS and a more expensive game. That's hard to pull off, but we believe that Nintendo has the IP to do so."
"We don't believe that Nintendo's troubles are indicative of anything other than that it has an uncompetitive console in the marketplace and mobile is cannibalizing dedicated handheld sales. If Nintendo management addresses these problems, we think that the company has sufficiently strong IP to reverse course and become profitable," he concluded.

Nintendo's Wii U has been struggling while the 3DS has performed admirably - how can Nintendo build on its strengths?
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
A lot of virtual ink has been spilled about Nintendo in the last couple years, as the original Wii faded into the annals of history and the Wii U struggled to gain any real traction in its first year. Meanwhile, Nintendo's 3DS (and 2DS) continues to defy conventional wisdom and is selling quite well in an era that screams "smartphones have killed the dedicated handheld." It's amazing what the right price and some amazing software can do.
But the fact of the matter is that Nintendo is failing to keep up with the pace of technology - I'm not only talking about graphical horsepower here - and the company is going to have to think long and hard about its next big move in the games business following 3DS and Wii U. I'm not suggesting, as so many others have ad nauseum, that Nintendo take the Sega route and abandon the hardware business, nor am I pushing them to develop for smartphones and tablets.
But after the Wii U lives out the rest of its GameCube-like days and the 3DS nears the end of its successful lifespan, what's Nintendo to do? Launch yet another console, perhaps this time bringing the processing power up to speed with the competition? No, that would be foolish, and it's clearly not the Nintendo way.
To me, the answer is clear. It's time for some consolidation. Scrap the idea of a traditional console. Engineer a new portable console hybrid that gives players the best of both worlds.
Being in the hardware business is difficult enough these days. New consoles require enormous amounts of R&D, manufacturing and marketing. Rather than push out another Wii (or some new console brand) why not consolidate hardware lines and focus on one, singular product? Leverage the business that has been so kind to you since the days of the first Game Boy and focus on your ultimate strength.
"It's time for Nintendo to really sit down and think about its future. Every successful company must endure transformations"
The difference is that the next portable should be far more versatile. Platform differences in today's market are already blurring. Consoles, microconsoles, PCs, Steam Machines, Smart TVs... it's all blending. What matters most is the games, and Nintendo's first-party efforts have always shined. The key here is to engineer a portable that also effectively functions as a home console when you want that big screen experience. Merge that portable with a compelling, feature-rich network like Xbox Live or Steam, and suddenly Nintendo is dominating living rooms again.
It's clear that add-on controllers for tablets and phones will never catch on to the point that mobile could ever truly work as the centerpiece of the living room. But a dedicated handheld, designed by video game engineers with traditional controls, that can play AAA games when connected to the TV while also offering the typical Nintendo portable experience - how could a gamer pass that up?
What I think needs to happen next is Nintendo must use its more than ample cash on hand to build up a real network, to dive headfirst into the online world and create its own ecosystem (a la Steam) that indies, third parties and of course Nintendo games can thrive in. The world is increasingly digital, the potential of PlayStation Now is evident, and even if the cloud doesn't take off right away, day one digital downloads are commonplace on both new consoles.
To its credit, Nintendo has moved more in the direction of digital releases on both 3DS and Wii U with its eShop and a number of indies have been supportive as well, but Nintendo can and should do a better job in building up its network.
A network-centric all-in-one portable is something Nintendo could easily do. The technology is there, and if the obstacles holding back cloud gaming can be overcome, Nintendo could future-proof this new hybrid console as well.
What the company must do now, however, is get aggressive. Poach the competition. Hire top engineers from Microsoft, Sony, Apple and Google. Build out a best in breed network. Stop being so insular and focus on the needs of markets besides Japan. And for Mario's sake, cater to third-party developers for a change. Sony's developer-centric approach with PS4 is winning people over. And the decision that both Sony and Microsoft made to use a familiar PC-like architecture is easing the transition for developers. Nintendo must learn from this and bring outside development back to its side. Assisting more developers with funding in exchange for timed exclusivity might help this cause.
"It's meaningless for third parties to take risks by developing games for the Wii U," Tokai Tokyo Securities analyst Yusuke Tsunoda told Bloomberg back in December. If Nintendo intends to stay relevant, the company must do everything in its power to avoid associating sentiments like this with its future platforms.
Shigeru Miyamoto is getting closer to retirement everyday. Satoru Iwata's tenure as CEO is already on somewhat shaky ground. It's time for Nintendo to really sit down and think about its future. Every successful company must endure transformations. Nintendo's already undergone a few since its playing card days well over 100 years ago. With a streamlined approach to hardware, a robust network, and a developer-first mindset, Nintendo can successfully navigate the 21st century and hopefully outlive me.

The European release of Nintendo 3DS role-playing game Rune Factory 4 has been cancelled, MarvelousAQL has announced.MarvelousAQL Europe issued the following statement to Eurogamer:"We regret to inform you that the European release of Rune Factory 4 for Nintendo 3DS has been cancelled."While MarvelousAQL has made every effort to secure the title's release for this territory, it is, unfortunately, not possible to do so at this time."MAQL and MAQL Europe would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiasm for their European releases. Please look forward to announcements on new MAQL titles over the coming months."While MarvelousAQL declined to explain the decision, it may have something to do with last year's closure of Rune Factory developer Neverland after it declared itself bankrupt.Rune Factory began life as a spin-off of farming sim Harvest Moon, albeit one where you could wield a sword and battle monsters.Four numbered titles have been released to date for DS and 3DS. Rune Factory 4, already released in Japan and North America, was due to arrive in Europe in spring 2014.

3DS flash card manufacturer Gateway has been accused of allowing users' 3DS consoles to become irretrievably bricked by a secret "kill switch" it introduced in a recent update.Report indicate that the doomsday trigger will activate if users attempt to modify a file within Gateway's illicit game launcher - something many recently attempted after a method to circumvent the 3DS' region-locking was discovered.Once activated, the code will corrupt the 3DS' NAND flash memory beyond repair - leaving some who have used the device with no choice but to send their handhelds to Nintendo for repair.Gateway cards - and other brands - are easy enough to find online.
Users notice that Gateway had introduced the new code via a recent software update, although the company has yet to publicly acknowledge the addition. GBATemp forum users report that its purpose is, ironically, to protect the piracy-enabling code from being pirated itself.Gateway has previously bemoaned the launch of copycat devices which use modified versions of its earlier code, but repackaged and sold as separate products. The company advertises its flash cards as a way to "play backup 3DS ROMs" via its launcher firmware. The sale of such devices is outlawed in many countries, including the UK, although they are still easy enough to find and buy online. Once loaded with game ROMs, the device itself allows for users to play pirated games with little trouble."We are investigating the issue about the recent blue screen bootrom error some users have reported, and we have discovered this is caused by memory corruption due to flawed copying or modifications of our official launcher firmware," Gateway wrote on its official site."We specifically warn users to avoid clone launcher firmware [companies which sell modified, older versions of Gateway's code] and avoid the region-free patches made by Normmatt [the user behind the recent region-free discovery]." "We can reassure our users that our official (unmodified) launcher firmware is free from such memory corruption and is 100 per cent safe to use."
Gateway
"We can reassure our users that our official (unmodified) launcher firmware is free from such memory corruption and is 100 per cent safe to use."We feel sorry for the users that are affected by this error, but we have issued warnings in the past about the clone cards for this exact reason," Gateway continued. "We pride ourselves to do thorough testing before release, the same cannot be said for our so-called 'competitors'."Admitting that region-free functionality was something it understood its users wanted, Gateway has said it will now implement the workaround within its own launcher in the future. Whether it will use its own code to do so is unknown. But for users who now have broken consoles, Gateway's apology is not enough - the code should be removed completely, many have said."Bricking a 3DS console is going too far," one user complained. "Nintendo has never intentionally bricked a console for having a modified firmware or flash cart, so customers should not have to expect that from Gateway. Plus, Gateway never directly notified customers that they coded this in to happen."Flashcard devices are illegal in many parts of the world, although prosecutions are rare.
Others pointed out that Gateway's tactic targeted consumers - most of whom will be entirely oblivious to the company's war against companies which have cloned and resold Gateway's code."The clone manufactures got their product sold and got their money," another user added. "The end-user which might not [have] even heard of Gateway got f***ed up."But customers will have little success objecting to the device's unexpected functionality - since the carts themselves are outlawed, users cannot force Gateway to be held responsible. In a statement sent to Eurogamer, Gateway told us that the company's focus was "to bring the best experience to genuine Gateway users. We can confirm that NO Gateway user had any issue with their console or Gateway."Which is true, if a "genuine Gateway user" only refers to someone that has not attempted to modify their device. When questioned why the kill code was included if it would affect the device's regular users - and not, as presumably intended, those attempting to modify the code for sale as a separate item, Gateway was evasive. "We do not answer rumours, speculations and other tactics from people who are not even real competitors, but simply companies stealing our hard work."
Gateway
"We do not answer rumours, speculations and other tactics from people who are not even real competitors, but simply companies stealing our hard work. It would be just taking away our time from what we owe our customers: bringing them a better and better experience with Gateway new firmware, functions and compatibility."If you are not a Gateway customer, please simply contact your product manufacturer. We only offer warranty and support for genuine Gateway card."Simply put, we do not care about others."Nintendo responded to Eurogamer's request for comment by pointing us to its establishedAnti-Piracy Programme."Piracy continues to be a significant threat to Nintendo's business, as well as over 1400 game development companies working to provide unique and innovative games," the company statement reads. "The primary goal of the Anti-Piracy Program is to reduce Internet piracy, availability of various infringing devices used to play illegal Nintendo game files, and the production and distribution of counterfeit Nintendo products around the world."Through education, raising awareness and legal actions, Nintendo is working hard to preserve the video game industry's ability to make investments into developing new and exciting games, and to give all legally-sold Nintendo games a chance to succeed."

Marvelous AQL has announced that 3DS title Rune Factory 4will not be released in Europe.
The news was confirmed in an official statement from the publisher, in which it said: "We regret to inform you that the European release of Rune Factory 4 for Nintendo 3DS has been cancelled.
"While Marvelous AQL has made every effort to secure the title's release for this territory, it is, unfortunately, not possible to do so at this time. MAQL and MAQL Europe would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiasm for their European releases. Please look forward to announcements on new MAQL titles over the coming months."
Rune Factory 4 was first released in Japan in July 2012. A localised English version was released in North America in October 2013.
Rune Factory studio Neverland announced in November 2013 that it would file for bankruptcy and cease operations, citing "changes in the business environment".
In its last Rune Factory 4 preview, NGamer praised the title's "fresh ideas" and talked up the "fine art looking particularly resplendent in 3DS sharp-o-vision".

Masahiro Sakurai has posted a new screenshot from the 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. on the Nintendo Miiverse.
The image, which shows Mario standing in an unfamiliar green environment with futuristic platforms, looks to be from some sort of single-player adventure mode.
However, a comment from series creator Masahiro Sakurai posted alongside the screenshot specifically states it is not from Subspace Emissary, a side-scrolling beat-em-up mode last seen in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
"Pic of the day. Where am I......?? To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games does not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary," he said.
Although Kid Icarus: Uprising studio Project Sora and series lead Masahiro Sakurai are heading up the project, Namco Bandai is handling development duties on the upcoming Wii U and 3DS Smash Bros. games.
Namco Bandai's team includes producer Masaya Kobayashi (Ridge Racer) and director Yoshito Higuchi (SoulCalibur).
"All the top creators from Namco Bandai are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project," Kobayashi said when the partnership was announced in June 2012.
"We will fully utilise our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organisation strength, and we hereby promise you that we will developer the best and most powerful Super Smash Bros. titles ever!"
Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS have not yet been given release dates, though they are expected to launch in 2014.

Last week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata mentioned that the company was rethinking its business strategy following poor sales of the Wii U console. Speculation that Nintendo would cease building consoles immediately followed, but Iwata assures fans and investors that this is not the case.
"The spread of smart devices does not spell the end of game consoles. It's not that simple," Iwata stated. "It doesn't mean that we should put Mario on smartphones." Instead, Iwata sees the new ubiquity of mobile devices as a platform that Nintendo could and should tap to promote its console releases. Here he cites GungHo Online Entertainment's Puzzle And Dragons as an example, pointing out that the 3DS incarnation of the game sold more than a million copies in its first month of existence, despite Puzzle And Dragons being available as a free-to-play offering on all manner of mobile devices.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Iwata remains convinced that good games can sell consoles, regardless of how technologically impressive they might be - though modern customers need more convincing than earlier generations. To that end, Nintendo is reportedly pouring money into research and development, and "Mr. Iwata promises to surprise game players in the future."

Martial rhythm game Kickbeat may be ready to lay down some beats on Wii U, if a new listing on German classifier USK is accurate. Dev-pub Zen Studios hasn't announced the port of the original PS3 and Vita game, but it's plausible given the pinball specialist has paddled plenty of its catalog up the Wii U ramp. We've reached out to Zen for more info.
Kickbeat is like a traditional rhythm game with notes to tap along to. except in its case the notes are hordes of ninja foes, and your taps punch and kick combos. If you're a PC player who believes was wrong and that rhythm is in fact a fighter, you'll be pleased to learn thatKickbeat arrives on Steam today for $10. The Windows PC version comes with improved visuals, an expanded soundtrack, keyboard controls, and a host of tweaks guided by player feedback.
Update: When approached, a Zen spokesperson told Joystiq, "Leave it to the ratings boards to spoil our surprises! I cannot officially confirm or deny thatKickBeat will come to the Wii U, but Zen loves to have all games on all platforms so people can enjoy our games regardless of the device they choose to play on."

Retro boutique publisher Super Fighter Team is now shipping copies of its Super Nintendo run-and-gun platformer Nightmare Busters to pre-order customers worldwide, marking the first time in several years that Nintendo's 16-bit console has seen a new cartridge production run.
Originally created and scheduled to launch in 1994, the Nichibutsu-developedNightmare Busters failed to materialize on store shelves, and never saw a release anywhere in the world. A completed version of Nightmare Busters was discovered years later, and Super Fighter Team began accepting cartridge pre-orders in 2012 after acquiring the rights to release the game officially.
While Super NES reproduction releases for prototype and fan-translated games are common, Nightmare Busters is a more ambitious project, shipping with a replica cardboard box and manual in addition to a uniquely-shaped cartridge that is compatible with SNES and Super Famicom consoles from all regions. Super Fighter Team is currently accepting orders for future cartridge production runs, and a complete-in-box copy of Nightmare Busters is available for $70 plus shipping.

Amazon UK and Argos both dropped the Wii U Premium to £180 this week, and if that's a familiar-sounding figure it's because it matches the launch price of the Wii. Both retailers have the 32GB Wii U model, complete with Nintendo Land, priced £120 less than the £300 Nintendo itself is asking for, and what most retailers sold the Wii U Premium for at launch.
Nintendo UK has several Premium SKUs at £250, including the better valueNew Super Mario U bundle, and Amazon and Argos more or less price match those bundles. There's been no official word, but perhaps these cuts indicate that Nintendo UK wants to phase out the Nintendo Land bundle, just asNintendo of America did last year.
In contrast, Zavvi taking £20 off the Xbox One is a fresher development for Microsoft's console. Europe's Day One editions of the Xbox One came with free copies of FIFA 14 or Forza 5, so it's arguable £410 better reflects Zavvi's game-less bundle. In any case, other retailers aren't following suit at this stage, so we're not sure what to make of it yet.
The Xbox One enjoyed a strong start at retail, racking up 3 million worldwide sales before the close of 2013. The Wii U reached 3 million shipped in a similar time frame, but that early success dried up in 2013, and Nintendo slashed the console's fiscal year forecasts recently from 9 million to 2.8 million - if that figure proves accurate, Nintendo will have shipped 6.2 million units by March 2014.

Activision Publishing has announced plans to bring the Cut the Rope series to the Nintendo 3DS in "early 2014." Cut the Rope: Triple Treat combines three games in the ZeptoLabs franchise: the original mobile release and its expansions Cut the Rope: Experiments and Cut the Rope: Time Travel.
Cut the Rope is a single-player physics-based puzzle series where players must devise the best way to make a piece of candy fall into an adorable little monster's mouth. Basically, it's a game about healthy eating habits, as written by small children. According to an announcement press release, Triple Treat features over 650 levels, in-game achievements and leaderboards.
Since first arriving on the competitive mobile scene, Cut the Rope has struck big with players, surpassing 3 million downloads soon after its 2010 launch. Originally published by the EA-owned Chillingo, Cut the Rope's expansions and sequel were subsequently self-published by ZeptoLabs.

The first three Ace Attorney games are reportedly coming to 3DS, with a court date in Japan set for April 17. According to Siliconera and Shinobi (viaGematsu), this week's issue of Famitsu says the Game Boy Advance trilogy - that's Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, Justice for All, and Trials and Tribulations - are to be enhanced on the handheld with stereoscopic 3D.
The 3DS bundle, titled Ace Attorney 123: Wright Selection, wouldn't be the games' first re-release by any stretch. Capcom already summoned the tribunal trio on DS, WiiWare, and PC, and as an HD package on iOS. We've reached out to Capcom to confirm reports, and to find out if the sweat-slicked lawyer will re-appear in a western version.

Pokemon Bank, the Pokestorage service for Pokemon X/Y with an annual service fee, has launched in "certain Asian countries," Nintendo of America announcedon Twitter this evening. Nintendo of Japan's activity seems to reflect this, noting the Pokemon Bank's current availability on the Japanese eShop.
The service was originally set to launch stateside in December, but eShopstability issues near the Pokemon Bank's Japanese launch resulted in a delay of its Western debut. Tonight's update asks fans in other regions to "stay tuned" to Nintendo's social media feeds for future news of Pokemon Bank's more widespread availability. In other words, your quest to capture and store the entirety of your favorite Pokemon species will have to wait just a little longer.

An unexpected blast from the past hits the Wii U Virtual Console on Thursday in the form of NES cult classic Mighty Bomb Jack.
Originally based on an arcade game of the same title, Mighty Bomb Jack is a relatively standard NES-era platformer. The game's protagonist uses the titular bombs as his main weapon, but most of the game focuses on precise jumping, seeking hidden treasure and that particular brand of video game weirdness you only see in Japanese games translated to English during the late 1980s.
Nintendo did not announce Mighty Bomb Jack's upcoming re-release, leaving it instead for fans to find on the Virtual Console. As a result, we can't say for certain what price will be attached to the game, though if it falls in line with most other Virtual Console NES releases Mighty Bomb Jack should feature a $5 price tag.

ZeptoLab and Activision cut Om Nom free of his rope so he can further his exploration of consoles.

"Nintendo's revenue and profits are tumbling faster than Mario into a bottomless pit. Company executives recently suggested the next-generation Wii U console would sell 2.8 million units between April 2013 and March 2014 — significantly below the 9 million units predicted in previous estimates. Contrast that with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One, which sold 4.2 million and 3 million units, respectively, in their first six weeks of release. In lowering its hardware and software estimates, Nintendo also expects to take a loss by the end of its fiscal year in March. Nintendo's attempt to carve a niche for itself as an ecosystem for casual gamers has also run into a massive obstacle in the form of smartphones and tablets, which quickly developed into popular gaming platforms. Nintendo isreportedly considering a 'new business model,' according to Bloomberg, with its CEO telling a gathering of reporters in Osaka: 'Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.' While Nintendo could probably made some good money off legacy gamers by bringing its (much loved) portfolio of older titles to iOS, Android, and other platforms, that move to mobile might further weaken its hardware sales. So what do you think? If you were in charge of Nintendo, how would you turn it around?

[Joshua] had his old Gamecube kicking around. Rather than let it gather dust, he took it into the machine shop at Harvey Mudd College and used its body as the shell of a mobile robot. With a bit of thought, it turns out that you can fit quite a lot inside the rather small Gamecube case. [Joshua] started with a couple of R/C plane style brushless outrunner motors. These motors generally give more torque and spin slower than their inrunner counterparts. Several thousand RPM was still too fast to directly drive the LEGO tires though. He needed a gear reduction.
Gears and tight spaces usually send people running for the SDP/SI website. We’ve used SDP/SI parts before, and have found that they make incredibly accurate gears and assemblies. Things can get pricey, however, when you’re buying two of everything. In search of a solution a bit more within his college-student-budget, [Joshua] looked at radio control servos. R/C servos have some rather strong output gears, especially the metal gear variety. Even with strong gears, parts do break in crashes, so replacement gear sets are available and cheap. [Joshua] settled on gears made for Hitec servos. His next problem was finding a pinion gear for his motors. That turned out to be easy, as 64 pitch gears commonly used in RC cars mesh with metric servo gears. The final results are great. His robot has tons of torque and plenty of speed to zip around. The only thing it’s missing is a brain. Videos after the break.

Virtue CFO Asif Khan believes Nintendo must use its ample cash to buy its way back to relevance - perhaps an investment in Oculus?
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Just last week, Nintendo pre-announced a horrendous sales miss for their fiscal year ending March, 2014. This has led to a flurry of blog posts, articles and tweets about Nintendo's impending death. As I have said before in my articles, Nintendo is not going to die. However, this recent Wii U sales data does have me concerned as a fan of the company as well as an investor.
Nintendo's ADR, NTDOY, is the third largest holding in the Virtue LLC portfolio that I manage and I have repeatedly stuck my neck out defending the company in myGame Trader articles and also when talking to my family, friends, and colleagues. The magnitude of the sales miss announced last week, and the drastic reduction in Nintendo's estimates has me questioning a number of things going on at the company.
Were their sales expectations wishful thinking or did they actually believe these numbers could be hit?
When a company misses their own sales projection by over 60 percent, it is toeing the dangerous line of misleading investors. Either the management team is full of eternal optimists or they did not see the writing on the wall. Whatever the case may be, it is clear that management needs to change. I am not saying that Iwata must resign, rather that the whole team at Nintendo must change how they view their business and the industry as a whole because they have proven to be out of touch.
"Nintendo has a great opportunity to take a minority stake in Oculus VR, or buy the whole dang company"
Just how long can Nintendo keep its head in the sand with respects to mobile?
It is obvious that Nintendo can not and should not make its own phone, but why not try to monetize legacy content in an environment with hundreds of millions of smartphones in the pockets of people around the world? I understand that 3DS has been much more successful than the Wii U, but I believe that releasing NES titles for mobile is not going to cannibalize sales of the 3DS as much as some inside and outside the company may believe. Nintendo has an opportunity to create a tiered system for releasing their content, where some virtual console titles will be made available on mobile phones and the new AAA Nintendo titles will still be made exclusively for 3DS/Wii U. The current walled garden philosophy isn't going to cut it. Super Mario 3D World was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2013, yet the Wii U sales still were pathetic. The idea that software sells hardware does not seem to be working, so why not sell some older software on proven hardware platforms that are still growing?
How long can planned obsolescence, incremental innovation, and proprietary intertwining of an ecosystem continue before consumers become disenfranchised and bored with the brand?
This is not just a question for Nintendo, but now seems like a great time for them to address it. The Wii U is severely underpowered when compared to the PS4, Xbox One, and upcoming Steam Machines. In a market with so many high quality choices, why does Nintendo perpetually gravitate towards being a low cost, lower tech option? The NES and SNES were not nearly as guilty of this and they remain some of the best selling consoles of all time. I dream of a day when Nintendo actually makes a machine with a lot of horsepower. We can call it the Mega Nintendo Entertainment System! The planned obsolete Wii U hardware led them to lose support from EA, which I think was a serious factor in the sales miss this holiday. There are very few consumers in Europe that are going to buy a game machine that doesn't play FIFA, as is the case with Madden here in the US. Nintendo must do a better job of creating an ecosystem that 3rd party developers want to be a part of, or else they will eventually suffer the same fate as Sega.
Why not acquire growth and innovation?
Nintendo has a mountain of cash, which allows them to take risks and fail from time to time. This is why they have been around since 1889 and have been able to adjust to market trends. Virtual Boy was a complete flop, but it was an attempt at doing something new and exciting. I had a chance to see Oculus VR's Rift Crystal Cove prototype at this year's CES, and it was a mindblowing experience. Clearly VR is a user interface that is very close to being ready for prime time, and Microsoft and Sony are putting up barriers to Oculus. Nintendo has a great opportunity to take a minority stake in Oculus VR, or buy the whole dang company. Either way, this is an example of how Nintendo could acquire innovation and show that they are still a brand that can wow people. Even if they don't acquire the whole company, supporting and developing games that use Oculus VR's innovative tech would be a great way to differentiate Nintendo from Sony and Microsoft.
If that is too crazy of an idea, why not acquire Sega or Capcom? One of the main problems Nintendo has is their development cycles are so long that they never seem to have enough quality titles available. Expanding their development teams to include Sega and Capcom is something they can easily do with their balance sheet and would be accretive to earnings within a few years. Instead of sitting on a pile of money, Nintendo should do something to grow the company before it starts bleeding cash.
Why not license existing brands out to film/TV studios in an effort to achieve profitability and improve brand recognition in key demographics?
"Wii U is not Dreamcast, and Nintendo could continue at this pathetic pace for 20 more years before going bankrupt"
Nintendo has made movies in the past, and they have had TV shows, but they currently aren't doing either. Nintendo could easily monetize their brands by licensing content to Disney, Sony or anyone else in Hollywood that wants to make money. It is a low cost, high return effort on their part and would help them get out of the hole they are in financially. At the same time, it could reinvigorate their brand in the eyes of an age group that has no recollection of the NES. Put simply, bring back the cereal, Nintendo!
Are they even trying?
The fact that I could put forth all these ideas for how to grow the company's earnings organically or through partnerships and acquisitions shows that there is a way out for Nintendo. Wii U is not Dreamcast, and Nintendo could continue at this pathetic pace for 20 more years before going bankrupt. Part of me feels like this whole generation is a "kick the can down the road" move on the part of Nintendo. 3DS and Wii U are evolutionary products, not revolutionary. Perhaps Nintendo already has its next product in the works and it will address a number of my concerns above. Maybe this recent sales miss is the kick in the behind the company needed to change course.
What I know for certain is that Nintendo still makes some of the best games in the world, it has some of the most recognizable characters in the world, and millions of fans worldwide. Not every decision at a video game company should be about profits and losses, but when a company has three straight years of losses and misses sales by an egregious 60 percent something has to change. The status quo will not work anymore, Nintendo. I have not sold any of my shares because I still believe that the company can turn this around, but it needs to realize that 2014 is a lot different than 2006.
When I bought the stock in 2010, in was with a 3-5 year time horizon. After this recent sales miss, I have realized that it will take close to 6 more years before we know if Nintendo really is going to turn it around or not. It remains the cheapest stock that I own on a number of valuation metrics, but companies are usually cheap for a reason. Nothing is going to appear undervalued when things are going well, and it is very apparent that things are not going well at Nintendo. Something has to change.

Hello loyal Gateway 3DS fans! (you know who you are)
Today we will briefly take a break from our intense development cycles to present you with our latest progress on the MultiROM functionality for the Gateway 3DS 2.0 release. But first a few words from the team.

We are still investigating individual brick incidents reported by legitimate Gateway 3DS users. So far, many isolated brick incidents that were blamed on us have been debunked in one way or another and turned out to be associated with use of the clones modified versions of our official release files.
Now, without further ado; enjoy this quick teaser video of the upcoming Gateway 3DS ROM selection menu. As you might be able to tell we're doing our best to tightly integrate this with the existing system and make the task of switching to a different game a pleasant and fast experience for all Gateway users.

There's no word on which retailers will offer the trinket, although GAME usually partners with Nintendo on such things.

The UK games industry still has faith in Nintendo, but told MCV that drastic action is needed to save Wii U.
The biggest names at games retail – talking under the condition of anonymity – say a significant price cut and a bundle with upcoming blockbuster Mario Kart 8 will help alleviate short-term issues surrounding Wii U.
Nintendo issued a profit warning after sales of its console fell significantly short of target. 2.8m Wii Us were sold worldwide last year, missing its quota by 6.2m.
“A sub-£200 machine will help, and Mario Kart is desperately needed to reach the fans,” said the games boss of one of the UK’s biggest retailers. “We also need something revolutionary that makes use of the second screen and has mainstream appeal, which is easier said than done.”
The top buyer at one online games store added: “There is only one real last chance for Wii U and it is Mario Kart 8. It could still be the game that sparks interest in Wii U, but it would need to be combined with a more mass market retail price.”
A games exec at a mass market outlet added: “£199 and Mario Kart 8. Simple.”
Despite the poor numbers, UK trade figures believe Nintendo has a plan.
Xbite boss Steve Thomas said: “Nintendo will have something up its sleeves that again will add a new dimension to gaming.”

An anonymous source has supposedly told one website that EA’s relationship with Nintendo was crippled shortly after the launch of Wii U.
"Nintendo was dead to us very quickly," an ‘EA source’ toldCVG when asked about the publisher’s sudden change of heart following Wii U’s arrival.
"It became a kids IP platform and we don't really make games for kids. That was pretty true across the other labels too. Even the Mass Effect title on Wii U, which was a solid effort, could never do big business, and EA like Activision is only focused on games that can be big franchises".
The publisher had FIFA, Madden, Need for Speed and Mass Effect ready for the system’s launch but has since seemingly abandoned the system, despiteprotestations to the contrary.
However, all the positive PR noises in the world can’t mask the fact that none of EA’s future titles are currently earmarked for Nintendo’s struggling machine.

If you'd seen this ratty-looking NES cartridge at a yard sale, you'd be forgiven for not giving it a second glance. If you'd paid a few bucks to take it home, however, then congratulations: you just won the admiration of every gamer in the world. The 1990 Nintendo World Championship toured the US with a custom game that asked players to beat levels from Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer and Tetris in less than seven minutes. Just 116 of these carts were produced, each one going to finalists and competition winners -- making it one of the rarest Nintendo titles ever made. Now, this not-so-gorgeous-looking copy, where some misguided fool decided that scrawling "Mario" in ballpoint was an adequate replacement for the torn label, is available on eBay. The starting price is $5,000, less than half of the $11,500 someone paid for one in 2011, but you'd better hurry up and sell those organs, as the auction's due to finish in less than 48 hours.

Bumpie's parties get a little unconventional, so if you're looking for the same-old small talk and wallflower party scene, you've come to the wrong place. The first content update for Spin The Bottle: Bumpie's Party is scheduled to add six new minigames to the mix on February 13, some of which will use the Wii U Gamepad's camera.
Dajana Dimovska, producer at developer KnapNok, described one of the upcoming camera-oriented challenges to Eurogamer: In "Don't Laugh," two players will use the Gamepad, keeping their faces within the camera's viewfinder. The audience will then say and do presumably polite and tasteful things to inspire snickers from the players, leaving the least stoic of the duo as the loser.
Once updated, Spin The Bottle's entry price will rise slightly in the eShop store. If you're already in on the party however, you won't have to pay a cover charge for the new content. While the impending price has yet to be set, KnapNok said it will "probably be a 'couple of bucks.'"

Ledges are important in the Super Smash Bros. series. Falling off of them? Bad. Grabbing onto them? Could save your life. Trying to grab one while your opponent hogs it in their invincibility state so you fall to your death? Infuriating. Thankfully, a new screen out of the Super Smash Bros. Miiverseshows off some upcoming changes to the edge-grab system.
In previous games, players could hog a stage's edge, preventing opponents from making a return, but it looks as though this has changed. In the picture, we can see Link grabbing for a ledge while Mario looks to be getting repelled. "There are many changes being made to attack and defense options for grabbing edges," game director Masahiro Sakurai wrote. "In this picture, Link is actually trumping Mario's grab."
Sakurai noted a few other changes as well. Air time and accumulated damage will determine a player's period of invincibility while hanging on an edge, and grab controls will no longer be affected by damage being above or below 100 percent. This may all sound like nitpicky things to fuss over, but details like these can make or break a fighting game's balance. Besides, you'll probably appreciate it when you're the one clawing desperately back onto a ledge.

Retro City Rampage will begin its old-school, urban crime spree on 3DS in February, developer VBlank Entertainment tweeted today. "No specific date yet," VBlank said, but it did share the price and file size: $10 and 16MB.
To hype up the February 3DS announcement, the Steam version of Retro City Rampage has been updated and is today's Daily Deal, 80 percent off ($3). The update enhances some of the visuals and weapon actions, allows jumping in the middle of actions, throws in some new key bindings and more.
"Another big update," VBlank wrote in the patch description. "Lots of changes/tweaks. The upcoming 3DS version's received a lot of updates, so the PC version gets them too! More to come still!"

Mutant Mudds developer Renegade Kid announced that it is developing Moon Chronicles, a 3DS remake of its 2009 Nintendo DS first-person shooter Moon.
Moon Chronicles will be visually upgraded to take advantage of the 3DS's wider top screen, and will run at 60 frames per second in both 2D and 3D modes.Chronicles will also include Circle Pad Pro support, allowing for traditional twin-stick control options.
The game will be released episodically via Nintendo's eShop this spring, with the first four-hour episode priced at $8.99. Three additional DLC chapters, each offering about 2 additional hours of gameplay, will be available at launch for $1.99 apiece. If Moon Chronicles proves successful, Renegade hopes to release an all-new second season of content next year that takes place after Moon's storyline.
Moon Chronicles joins Renegade Kid's growing stable of projects, which include the side-scrolling platformer Treasurenauts and the survival horror game Cult County. A Mutant Mudds sequel is also in the works, though development is currently on hold pending the completion of Treasurenauts.

A slew of analytical features and opinion pieces sprung up in the wake of Nintendo’s worrying profit warning last week.
Editors, analysts and journalists the world over seemed to know exactly what the company should do, or shouldn’t have done in the first place (always easy to say in retrospect, isn’t it?)
There’s no disputing the fact that Wii U is in crisis, but Nintendo is unlikely to listen to any of these articles, and perhaps they shouldn't.
It’s true that if Iwata and his team had listened to the media about Wii U in the first place (it’s too expensive, confusing, not enough games, underpowered) then they might have avoided the situation they find themselves in now. But likewise, if they paid attention to the media then they probably wouldn’t have launched the Wii in the first place, or even the DS for that matter.
Nintendo is a company that moves to its own beat and takes creative gambles with its products – which don’t always come off. It is a company that has a CEO that stars in unboxing videos and reportedly designs Kirby characters in his spare time. It would be a crippling shame if they started to behave more like the corporate giants of the US and Europe.
The last thing Nintendo should do is what is expected of it.
Upon saying that, it certainly needs to do something, particularly when it comes to Wii U. Whether that’s cut the price and ramp up game production (a risky strategy when trying to return to profitability), scrap it and start again (an even riskier strategy) or perhaps become a third-party publisher (riskier still).
Yet if there’s one positive Nintendo can take out of 2013, it’s with its software. Zelda (3DS and Wii U), Mario 3D world, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Fire Emblem Awakening, Luigi’s Mansion 2 and Pikmin 3 were all amongst last year’s highest rated titles amongst critics. Nintendo may have lost the magic touch with launching big consoles, but it still knows how to make a fantastic game.
And you’d hope that it’s that last factor that will prove crucial in turning the good ship Nintendo round.

A European retailer is cancelling pre-orders for the Wii U version of Watch Dogs.
Wiitalia reports that the Italian arm of GameStop has informed customers who have pre-ordered the SKU that it will no longer be released.
The site says that specifically GameStop is telling customers that Ubisoft “has scrapped this version”.
It remains entirely possible that something may have been lost in translation, however, and perhaps the retailer is simply no longer carrying the SKU. It will remain a guessing game until Ubisoft confirms something one way or the other.

Youkai Watch, Level-5's tale of a magical watch that lets its user see spiritual beings, released in Japan last July for the 3DS. Localizing software isn't exactly free though, so we've resigned to just imagining what it's ... wait, Level-5 recently filed a trademark for "Yo-kai Watch" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office? Huh. You can't print out and play trademarks in the 3DS' cartridge slot though, so take this as a potential hint instead of an outright confirmation of a planned Western release.
This isn't the only hint that we've seen recently for localized Level-5 projects - soccer RPG Inazuma Eleven popped up (and has since disappeared) on Nintendo's release calendar for the 3DS earlier this month. The weapons shopkeep simulator Rental Bukiya de Omasse also received a content rating from the Australian Classification Board. Hopefully the next Nintendo Direct brings a slew of Level-5 announcements, similar to the October reveal of plans to localize the Guild 01 series.
You can check out the trademark for yourself by searching for "Yo-kai Watch" with the USPTO's Basic Word Mark Search.

Japan's favorite wildlife activity is getting a followup in Japan - following last year's Monster Hunter 4 for the 3DS, Monster Hunter 4G will plan more hunting excursions on the same device in the fall. Siliconera reports that the news was announced during the Monster Hunter Festa 13 event, the participants of which presumably responded with a gentle golf clap and reserved nods of approval.
Monster Hunter 4 data will transfer over to 4G, so if you've imported last year's entry, you can keep slaying beasts without worry. Unlike Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which reached the 3DS and Wii U and supported multiplayer between the two versions, 4G was only announced for the 3DS. A Western release was not mentioned.
Update: In a video message to fans, producer Ryozo Tsujimoto announced thatMonster Hunter 4G will receive an early 2015 Western release called Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Tsujimoto confirmed that 4 Ultimate will support online play in addition to local play.

Remember the ratty copy of Nintendo World Championships that popped up on eBay earlier this week? After a fast and furious auction, the ultra-rare cartridge sold for a staggering $99,902. Naturally, such eye-watering figures have prompted two more collectors to sell their prized possessions online. First up, there's a mint-condition grey edition with an intact label, but if you're not fussed about stickers, then there's the even rarer gold edition up for grabs. Considering that only 26 of the 116 cartridges were gold, produced specifically for Nintendo Power prize winners, it's an even rarer find for the 8-bit enthusiast. If you missed out on a chance to bid for the original and want a do-over, then perhaps this is your lucky day.

An indie developer has come out to defend the Wii U, claiming that suggestions of difficulty working on it are "needless".
Dakko Dakko's Rhodri Broadbent, who is currently developing platformer/shooter hybrid Scram Kitty And His Buddy On Rails, recently told Official Nintendo Magazine that working on the Wii U is not as troublesome as some developers claim.
"We've found Nintendo to be tremendous to work with, and very supportive of Scram Kitty and his Buddy on Rails right from the start," he said.
"In recent weeks there has been a bunch of concerned chatter online about out-of-date information and needless negativity around Wii U development. I think it comes down to approach and expectation as to how much fun (or otherwise) a developer will have making games on any platform.
"To me, bringing your game to a Nintendo system should be about taking advantage of the toybox of possibilities they provide you with in terms of the controllers, the two screen setup, Miis, and so on. There's so much to use, learn from, and build on."
He continued: "Some developers quite understandably simply want an easy way to bring their established game over to a new platform. In that case, the more similar the system and the development tools, the happier they'll obviously be.
"Those developers make up an important and sizeable chunk of the industry, but it shouldn't be the dominant one and it shouldn't be the only voice we hear. As both consumer and developer I want unique systems, and games tailored to those systems, playing to strengths and mastering the quirks and charms of the target hardware. If that has to necessarily mean that certain elements won't be the same as they are on another games machine, then so be it. In fact, that's better. Choice is always good."
"What is disappointing to me about the recent online chatter hasn't been the not-at-all surprising revelation that some developers get unhappy that games development isn't always easy on pre-launch hardware. We've all been there at some point.
"What's disappointing to me is that there appear to be so few of the larger publishers interested in making things specific to a platform any more. We'll be much poorer off as gamers if cross-platform homogeny sets the agenda for platform holders. A platform's individuality and its exclusives are what you'll remember in 20 years time. And Nintendo has already ensured that Wii U will be fine with regard to those."

As we all know, things aren't too rosy at Nintendo Towers at the mo. A point that was well and truly hammered home recently when the company announced that it had reduced its 2013 earnings forecast by £605 million. This mind-boggling shortfall is due to Nintendo's original FY2013 forecast significantly overestimating 3DS and Wii U sales from April '13 to March '14.Before we go any further, I should make it clear that Nintendo is in no great danger of going out of business any time soon. Its prior successes has enabled it to amass an Uncle $crooge level of wealth, to the tune of (depending on who you talk to) around £5.3 bn in cash. But unless it wants to divide that fortune up amongst its investors and go home, something clearly needs to be done to remedy its tenuous situation, and that's what we thought we'd have some fun with in our article entitled “How would you save Nintendo's bacon?”Basically, it's a semi-serious collection of ideas that we think could help Nintendo regain some of the appeal it seems to have lost of late. I'm sure you have ideas of your own, and I'd love to hear them. And if you don't care, why? Nintendo makes great games, but what is it about them - or the hardware they run on - that doesn't appeal to you any more?If I was a betting man, I'd put money on Shadows of Mordor winning the Stabbiest Game of the Year Award. Indeed, I'd place a double on Most Decapitations.
While Nintendo is known for its bright, colourful and cutesy games, I saw the antithesis of that earlier this week in the form of Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor. The thing I hate about doing previews is sometimes you can get fooled by and/or overly excited about a well-crafted demo, and look like a right old chump when the final release is a shambling mockery of the seemingly glorious game you described some months prior. But here I am, ready to look like said chump, because I found it hard to contain my excitement over this slicin', dicin', stabbin', throat-slittin', eye-skewerin', face-melting mashup of Skyrim, Batman and Assassin's Creed. So far, it's looking like a hugely violent, hideously gory Mordor theme park o' fun where you can do things like mind control massive wolves and use them to munch enemies, or enjoy the simple pleasures in life like tossing an orc into a fire and watching him run around while he turns all crispy. What's not to like? Our Bob was a little more cautious in his assessment of the upcoming Thief makeover. While Shadows of Mordor is a face-stabbin' man's action adventure, Thief is more of your thinking man's type, and he pondered that, and how it's going to affect the way the franchise is being rebooted.Bob also had a butcher's at Yoshi's New Island, the long-awaited sequel to an eight-year-old Yoshi game whose name I'll leave you to guess. But I'll give you a clue: it's bereft of the word "New." It looks typically bright and cheery, though if you read the article, you'll get the distinct impression that cheeriness didn't rub off on Bob.One final preview comes in the form of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Kat reckons it's "lovely to look at," but recommends you bring a friend. I'll let her explain why.

January 27th, 2014, 18:12 Posted By: wraggster
Satoru Iwata's job is on the line. You can tell that it is, because he's been forced to say that he's hanging on to it. Not long ago, this situation would have been inconceivable. Nintendo's president and CEO since 2002, Iwata turned the drifting company around with the explosive success of the DS and Wii consoles, innovating in touch and motion control, exploring new markets, and outstripping the sales of his megacorp rivals at Microsoft and Sony.Forget smartphones - what Nintendo needs now is something like this.
But now Nintendo is facing a situation even worse than it did in the early 2000s. 3DS is underperforming, Wii U is a flop, the company is predicting its third annual loss in a row and its stock has slumped. Commentators are calling for Iwata's head, pointing to Nintendo's quixotic strategies, tattered third-party relationships and ineffective marketing. But perhaps - to think the unthinkable - there is another famous figurehead at Nintendo who is holding the company back; a man regarded for decades as its most valuable asset. I'm talking about the legendary game designer, the creator of Mario, and general manager of the famed EAD development teams: Shigeru Miyamoto. Lately, he hasn't been doing his job so well.Much of the rhetoric surrounding Nintendo makes the mistake of treating the Kyoto outfit as a platform company, like Sony and Microsoft. It is, of course, but that's only a by-product of Nintendo's true calling. Nintendo is a games company. It has absolutely no vested interest in the console business beyond selling video games - primarily its own video games. It is, really, a developer-publisher, an autonomous premium games label, like Blizzard or Rockstar. It happens to make its own consoles as part of its development process - because, on both a business and a philosophical level, I don't think Nintendo believes you can separate hardware and software. (Which is why it dismisses out of hand the argument that it should develop for other platforms, however compelling.)Or this.
So it's helpful to look at Nintendo's situation not from the perspective of a technology company, but as a maker and publisher of video games. And Shigeru Miyamoto is its game-maker in chief. Nintendo's internal workings are opaque at best, but we know that Miyamoto consults across a very wide range of projects, occasionally gets hands-on as a designer and producer, and alongside his longtime collaborator Takashi Tezuka, holds managerial responsibility for all games development. Anecdotally, the impish, youthful-seeming 61-year-old is an exacting boss with a sharp, analytical mind, firmly held opinions and a quick temper. And he is Nintendo's chief PR asset - the most widely recognised and adored game creator ever, an icon who embodies the company's values and its peerless record as the maker of the best-loved, best-selling video games on the planet.Yet right now, creatively, Nintendo the game developer is in a rut. This is nuts, you might be thinking. Didn't you just give Super Mario 3D World 10/10 and anoint it your game of 2013? What about the incredible... run... of... quality... titles on 3DS over the last 12 months? Nintendo still makes great games!Of course it does. In fact, Nintendo's commitment to quality in its games is so impressive, across so prolific an output, that it all but obscures its creative malaise. Artwork is never less than polished and charming. Design is refined and inventive. Engineering is excellent, too - something the company doesn't often get credit for, since its priorities are different from those at the bleeding edge of games technology, but over on Digital Foundry's YouTube there's which argues that 3D World was one of the best-engineered games of last year. Review scores are buoyant (and I freely admit that we critics, trained so effectively to love Nintendo and judge it by its own high standards - many of us since childhood - are part of this problem). "Every one of the brilliant games Nintendo released in 2013, it had made before in some form"
Or this.
But consider this: every one of the brilliant games Nintendo released in 2013, it had made before in some form. 3D World might be a dazzling procession of little gameplay ideas, but big ideas have been noticeably absent from the company's output for years now - completely so on both 3DS and Wii U. Its slate is a catalogue of sequels and rehashes. Nintendo's last major new IP launch was Wii Sports, back in 2006.Wii Sports could not be a more instructive example. Though not the most sophisticated game in the company's history, it was one of those - Nintendo has at least half a dozen like it to its name, as both developer and publisher, including Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Pokémon and Brain Training - that made sense of its host console and sold it by the tens of millions. It wasn't just a killer app for Wii - it was Wii. Subsequent megahits like Mario Kart Wii owed all their success to it. Going right back to 1981 and the Donkey Kong arcade machine, Nintendo has repeatedly blown its way out of trouble, even created new markets for itself, with games like this. Not with acquisitions, not with marketing, not with clever business strategy or new technology - with killer games. So this is how we end up at Miyamoto's door. As the leading light of Nintendo's games development, it is his responsibility to find games like this for 3DS and - more pressingly - Wii U. New games. If he can't make them himself - and at 61, having personally crafted several of these era-defining classics, from Donkey Kong all the way to Wii Sports, he's allowed to be spent - then he needs to incubate younger talent that can, and encourage them to work on the bold new ideas that Nintendo, for all its traditionalism, has always embraced.

A rare NES cartridge has 'sold' for nearly $100,000, but the winning bidder has withdrawn the offer.
The cartridge, one of only 90 Nintendo World Championship games in existence, was listed on eBay and received a high number of bids despite the worn condition of its label.
In the past, mint copies of the cartridge have sold for up to $18,000, so when the price went beyond this some began to question the validity of the bids.
When the auction ended at $99,902, the seller contacted the winning bidder, only for them to retract their bid, claiming their two-year-old had made it "by mistake".
"I'm now offering the item to other bidders in the auction to see if any of them are honourable individuals," the seller told Destructoid.
"It may take me a while but that's about all I can do for now. It would be nice if eBay were more seller-friendly, rather than 100% buyer protection focused."
The highest price a NES game has ever sold for at auction is $75,000, for a sealed copy of Family Fitness Stadium Events, which is believed to be one of only two sealed copies that exist.

The industry's top company only succeeds when it does the unexpected
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo blew it. That much is clear, and even Satoru Iwata doesn't debate it - Nintendo blew it. The financials could be much worse, but the unit sales? Way, way below targets, and in the case of Wii U, way below sustainability. Nintendo blew it! Shout it from the rooftops, if you can find space on a rooftop next to all the people who are already shouting it, with altogether too much peculiar jubilance in their snide, told-you-so voices.
Nintendo blew it. Blew what, though? That's a tougher question. The company's year has been a lot more complex than anyone is giving it credit for. In 2013, Nintendo was proud owner of the best-selling console in every major territory worldwide, and launched an enviable range of first-party software titles that sold over a million copies each - more than any other publisher out there. The company retained its crown as the biggest platform holder and the biggest software publisher in the business.
Yet, Nintendo blew it, because it also had a platform that utterly under-performed even the most conservative of estimates - a console that, on its current trajectory, is set to undershoot the low bar set by the GameCube and become the firm's worst performing home console ever. Moreover, Nintendo blew it in a subtle but crucially important way - with startling incompetence for a company of its size, the firm predicted sales figures for both the 3DS and the Wii U which were absolutely ludicrous and then failed to revise them as the year carried on, meaning that even the solidly performing 3DS has undershot its targets, while the Wii U looks even worse than it ought to (which is pretty bad to begin with).
"Nintendo's stock didn't tumble too badly after it revised its guidance, largely since nobody with a clue actually thought the firm was going to hit its targets anyway"
This latter aspect has made the coverage of Nintendo's situation even more negative than it would already have been (and there are plenty of people waiting to pile onto the company at the slightest provocation), since it covers up the success of the 3DS and its software line-up - seriously, 3DS has had an amazing year for software and is now set up with a library that effectively secures the console's future - in a heavy smearing of corporate incompetence. It has also, understandably, deeply annoyed shareholders, because they rely on companies making accurate predictions to figure out whether or not to pick up stock in a firm. That said, Nintendo's stock didn't tumble too badly after it revised its guidance, largely since nobody with a clue actually thought the firm was going to hit its targets anyway. Incidentally, the company's stock price is about 50% higher today than it was 12 months ago, in line with the rise in the Nikkei 225 index - which means that Japanese investors, at least, are rating the company as broadly neutral rather than actually negative.
Still, Nintendo blew it, and that means lots of people are making angry noises. Iwata must go, say some; Nintendo must exit hardware, say others; time for Mario on smartphones, say still others. The owners of all of those voices are going to be disappointed - not least, I believe, because very few of them actually understand Nintendo as a company or the Japanese corporate environment in which it operates. They don't understand that activist shareholders don't mean a tuppenny damn to a company whose shares are largely held by a combination of the founding family, the senior staff and (more significantly still) the complex web of interrelated share- and debt-holdings that connects Nintendo with Japanese banks and other corporations, none of whom have the slightest concern in being "activist" except in the most extreme of circumstances. An earnings miss? Pah! Japanese corporations routinely missed annual earnings every year for decades after the Asian Financial Crisis of the early 1990s, but shareholder pressure to change top management never materialised then, and it won't materialise now. Iwata is secure until he does something sufficiently wrong to have a taint of scandal around it, and that's deeply unlikely to happen.
Exiting hardware? Absolutely no chance. Nintendo's primary view of itself is as a toy company and its core business model is selling hardware (generally profitably) and then selling software that runs on that hardware (extremely profitably). The synergy between the company's hardware side and its software side is legendary, as is the extent to which each Nintendo platform is designed with the requirements of planned first-party software in mind. For that reason alone, it's likely that the Wii U will eventually have a clutch of startlingly excellent games, matching last year's critically acclaimed Super Mario 3D World in quality - although whether that will actually do anything to resuscitate sales is another question entirely. The point is that this approach isn't going to change; the inertia behind Nintendo as a hardware company is immense, and moreover, despite this year's earnings miss, it's largely working. Nintendo is, pretty much every year, the largest and most successful game software company in the world. Would it retain that crown on someone else's hardware? If you rush to answer "yes!" to that question, either your crystal ball gazing skills are excellent or you haven't thought about it hard enough; I don't think there is a good answer to that question right now, and I know Nintendo will be eyeing Sega's post-hardware decline and thinking about its own potential fortunes as one-among-many on a smartphone app store. Right now, Nintendo has around 40 million 3DS owners who are keenly anticipating future first-party releases from the company - keenly enough that they start to agitate and make noise if there's ever a gap in the release schedule. Would that be true on iOS, or Android, or even on a competitor's console platform?
"one of the company's failings, in some regards, is that it still doesn't really have a global outlook, with Nintendo of America and Nintendo Europe being rather stunted"
How about a limited engagement with smartphones, then, even if they wouldn't make the leap entirely? That's plausible. Nintendo's primary point of reference for its product decisions is Japan - one of the company's failings, in some regards, is that it still doesn't really have a global outlook, with Nintendo of America and (even more so) Nintendo Europe being rather stunted local offshoots whose actual contribution to the firm's planning and success is pretty obviously minimal. In Japan, smartphone games are a huge sector, and interestingly, there's seemingly more of a market for premium-priced games than there is in the west, where free-to-play is increasingly the only show in town (although premium-priced games are carving out an interesting niche there too). There is, I believe, some potential for Nintendo to start putting Virtual Console titles on smartphones, perhaps initially through a tie-up with one of Japan's carriers. However, I'd expect this roll-out to be slow and careful, with Nintendo incredibly mindful of the possibility of damaging its core brands by launching Mario or Zelda games tainted by emulation problems or crap touchscreen controls. Still - it could happen, and is by far the most likely of the "demands" being made of the firm to actually be met in some limited form.
If Iwata isn't going to go (he's not), Nintendo isn't going to exit hardware (they're not) and the company's future isn't on smartphones (it's not, although some cautious toes in that water may be seen in time), then what is Nintendo's reaction to its present situation going to be?
I've stated this before, but it bears repeating - Nintendo has incredibly, insanely deep pockets. The firm has set aside a vast war chest over the course of its successful years, and it can easily ride out even the complete failure of a console platform, supporting that platform sufficiently to satisfy consumers while quietly working on a replacement. That's what Satoru Iwata told me Nintendo would do if the Wii failed completely - they'd make something else and try that instead - and I see no reason why that logic would have changed. If anything, the firm's financial position is even stronger now than it was then.
What will Nintendo make? There's a lot of speculation around that, but most of it is evolutionary. A faster, more powerful DS / 3DS style handheld. A Nintendo tablet, capable of handheld gaming and being hooked up to a TV. A full-spec next-gen console built to rival the PS4. All of these are options for the company - the tablet computer one is even an interesting one, combining as it does the handheld market (which Nintendo always dominates) with the home console market (where it's hit and miss). However, they all miss the crucial ingredient which Nintendo actually requires to bring itself back to success - surprise.
"Nintendo needs the element of surprise. It surprised the hell out of everyone with the DS, it surprised everyone with the Wii"
Nintendo needs the element of surprise. It surprised the hell out of everyone with the DS, a daft, stupid idea for a handheld console that everyone expected to be trounced by the much more comprehensible PSP. It surprised everyone with the Wii, a weird, tiny, underpowered system with a controller that looked nothing like we expected - so odd that it led me to rather bluntly ask Iwata what he planned to do if everyone hated it and the system flopped, hence his comment above. The DS is the best-selling console in history (or at least, tied for that honour with the PS2); the Wii trounced the Xbox 360 and PS3 in the last generation of hardware. Nintendo does exceptionally well when it surprises people. It creates a clear gap between itself and the competition and makes "the Nintendo Difference" into more than just a silly slogan. Even those who own a more "mainstream" console end up wanting a Nintendo one too, because it's so interesting and different, while those from outside the core gamer market find themselves intrigued by the very peculiarity and curiosity of the devices and their software.
3DS and Wii U fail the surprise test. They're practically indistinguishable from their predecessors, both in appearance and in branding. 3DS suffered terribly from being mistaken for a new version of the original DS hardware; the Wii U, I suspect, is doing even worse, with many consumers not realising that it's a new console entirely and not a new controller for the Wii. There's been a disastrous failure of communication, branding and marketing, which has compounded the more basic error - assuming that the success of the Wii meant people wanted more of that kind of thing. Nintendo's strength is providing people will surprises, things that look daft to begin with and then turn out to be precisely what we always wanted and never realised. If it's to successfully come back from its present mess, it needs to do so by surprising us, not by following along the dull path analysts would now demand of it.
That, I earnestly hope, is what the company is working hard on in Kyoto right now. I don't want Nintendo to abandon the Wii U, and I don't think that will happen. The installed base is small, but big enough to be worth caring about, and the console still has the makings of a profitable platform, albeit a niche one. However, alongside continued support for the Wii U (and hopefully, a drastic change in marketing and branding), Nintendo is hopefully also working on something else; something more important and simply more Nintendo; its next big surprise.

Nintendo isn't bringing free mini-games to smartphones, according to a statement given to Engadget. Following a report by Japanese media corp Nikkeithat suggested Nintendo is planning to release trailers and free mini-games on phones, the company re-iterated CEO Satoru Iwata's statements against Nintendo software being on such devices.
"Nikkei's article contains information previously stated by Mr. Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo's willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products," reads the Nintendo statement provided to Engadget. "However during such past announcements Mr. Iwata has also stated that Nintendo's intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer mini-games on smartphone devices."
That seems clear, but we may hear more when Nintendo releases its Q3 financial results tomorrow, or as news comes from the corporate management briefing the day after.

The move aims to attract non-Nintendo gamers to the Nintendo platform.
We cannot deny that we are eagerly awaiting the day that Mario hits our mobile screens, however this is unfortunately not that day.
Japanese business paper, Nikkei has reported that Nintendo is planning on launching free mini-game demos on iOS and Android devices – which will have to do for now.
The newspaper also stated that the games company aims to reach out to potential users by spreading news on releases via different platforms getting in front of audiences that would have previously been missed.
Dr. Serkan Toto, who reported on the news, said: “The playable demos of console games are a means to give smartphone-only players a taste of the experience without making the actual game available on non-Nintendo devices and convert these users into Nintendo customers.”
Nintendo are expected to make this news official on Thursday.
In other Nintendo news, ZeptoLab and Activision announced the launch of Cut the Rope: Triple Treat on the Nintendo 3DS.

Back in 1989, Nintendo released Tetris for the NES. This detailed article first explains themechanics of how Tetris works, then builds an AI to play the game.
To understand the mechanics of the game, the ROM source was explored. Since the NES was based of the MOS 6502 microprocessor, this involves looking at the 6502 assembly. The article details how the blocks (called Tetriminos) are created and how they move across the screen. The linear feedback shift register used for random number generation is examined. Even details of the legal screen and demo mode are explained.
After the tour through how Tetris works, an algorithm for the AI is presented. This AI is implemented in Lua inside of the FCEUX NES/Famicom emulator. It works by evaluating all of the possible places to put each new Tetrimino, and choosing the best based on a number of criteria. The weighting for each criterion was determined by using a particle swarm optimization.
The source for both the Lua version and a Java version of the code is available with the article. Everything you need to run the AI is available for free, except the Tetris ROM. If you’re interested in how 8 bit games were built, this dissection is a great read.

A Japanese news channel is claiming that Sony is lining up a ¥7bn acquisition of a Renesas Electronics semiconductor plant.
This is of note because the site currently produces the DRAM chips found in Nintendo’s Wii U.
DualShockers reports that Sony is prepared to invest a further ¥20bn into the site following completion of the deal and will absorb “an unspecified percentage” of the existing staff.
The factory will be used to manufacture CMOS sensors for smartphones, meaning Nintendo will have to find an alternative source for its DRAM – although it is understood that it has “sizable stocks of the component” and had already readied for the closure of the plant prior to Sony’s proposed move.

Combined sales of 3DS and XL give Nintendo a reason to celebrate
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
The Nintendo 3DS has now sold more than 15 million units in Japan.
According to Famitsu, the 15 million is a combined total from both models of Nintendo's market-leading handheld: the 3DS and the 3DS XL.
The size of its installed-base in its native market is one of the few positives Nintendo can look to in its current predicament. Nevertheless, the company's disastrous Q4 financial report showed that even the 3DS is not meeting expectations, with Nintendo cutting its fiscal year projections from 80 million units to 66 million units.
Yesterday, the Nikkei reported that Nintendo was preparing its entrance into mobile gaming, by using smartphones as a way to distribute demos, videos and information for the games on its own hardware platforms.

Nintendo's next big Wii U game Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze lacks any kind of GamePad functionality when playing the game on your TV.
The title still supports Off-TV play, allowing you to move the image onto the GamePad for portable play. But, under regular play conditions, the GamePad screen will simply go black. The ommission of any in-game use for the GamePad was first spotted by Nintendo World Report, but has been independently verified by Eurogamer.Few Wii U games require the GamePad for specific controls, and recent tentpole release Super Mario 3D World only utilised its features in a handful of select levels. Many other titles can be played using only the traditional Pro Controller, or even just a Wii Remote (such as Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, or Zelda: Wind Waker).Mario Kart 8, the next major Wii U title after Donkey Kong, displays a map on the GamePad screen. Pressing it will let you sound your horn.Justifying the GamePad has always been an uphill battle for Nintendo. The concept has failed to capture consumer attention in the way that motion controls did for Wii - and this has been reflected in the system's comparatively uninspiring sales.Wii U is already being sold at a loss in Europe and North America - a factor preventing further price cuts, Nintendo reiterated in today's latest round of financial briefings. Perhaps the company might consider a version of the console sans GamePad to ensure a cheaper price point, similar to how the 3DS' stereoscopic 3D was removed for the 2DS.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has announced he will take a 50 per cent pay cut in response to the company's continued financial problems.Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and another director, Genyo Takeda, will both take a 30 per cent wage reduction. The seven other members of the company's board will all take a 20 per cent pay cut, AFP reports.
The changes will take effect in February and last until June, at which time the adjustments will be reviewed based on the company's ongoing progress.Today's announcement comes just over a week after Nintendo significantly reduced its predictions for company's performance this financial year, based primarily on poor sales of its struggling Wii U console. Overall, Nintendo now expects to make another loss.Iwata previously cut his pay for a time after the company's wobbly launch of the 3DS - although that machine's fortunes were restored by a quick-fire price cut and the double-punch release of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.Nintendo last night published its financial results for the four months ending 31st December. Tonight, Iwata will face investors for its regular quarterly earnings presentation. The company now reports that it has shipped 5.86 million Wii U consoles and 29.37m units of disc-based Wii U software (including sales of digital copies and packed-in games).Wii U titles Super Mario 3D World, Wii Party U and Zelda: The Wind Waker HD have all now passed the 1m sales mark. For 3DS, the company has now shipped 42.74m hardware units. Software stands at 152.29m. Pokémon X and Y sold a whopping 11.6m copies - roughly equal with the series' last few DS instalments. Animal Crossing: New Leaf sold another 3.5m worldwide (for a total now north of 7m), while Zelda: A Link Between Worlds currently sits on 2.18m since late November.

A new screenshot for Nintendo's upcoming entry in the Smash Bros series has been released, showing one of the stages players will get to trade blows in.
The image of a Kid Icarus themed stage was posted on the game's Miiverse by series creator and director Masahiro Sakurai along with a message: "You can find this statue of the Goddess of Light in one of the stages. She's watching over the arena."
Nintendo recently revealed that King Dedede will be returning as a playable character in the game.
Other confirmed characters include Capcom's Mega Man and Animal Crossing's Villager and Wii Fit Trainer, as well as Rosalina and Lumafrom Super Mario Galaxy.
Nintendo has also offered an update on gameplay changes it is making, stating that the development team is rethinking edge-hanging, a high-level strategy expert players could use to make battles a little bit harder for their opponents.
"There are many changes being made to attack and defence options for grabbing edges," said Sakurai.
Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS are being co-developed by Namco Bandai. The games have not yet been given release dates, though they are expected to launch in 2014.

January 30th, 2014, 00:37 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo's nine-month financial results showed an ongoing slide in revenue and profit, though it was a more positive story in terms of software sales.
For the nine-month period ended December 31, 2013, Nintendo earned ¥499.1 billion ($4.8 billion) in revenue, down 8.1 per cent on the prior year, which was down 2.4 per cent on the year before that. The company's profit showed an even steeper decline, sinking 30 per cent to ¥10.2 billion ($96.7m). Indeed, were it not for the ¥48 billion the company recouped in exchange gains at the end of the nine-month period its balance sheet may well have registered a loss.
As expected, the Wii U remained the thorn in Nintendo's side, selling just 2.41 million consoles in a nine-month period that included the holiday sales season. Crucially, that's lower than the 3 million units the console sold in the equivalent period in the prior fiscal year, and Nintendo expects fewer than 400,000 more units to be sold by the end of March, 2014.
In addition, the cost of manufacturing the Wii U hardware and the price-point at which it is sold in the U.S. and Europe means that its sale, "still has a negative impact on Nintendo's profits."
The Wii U has sold 5.86 million units in its lifetime, and that's at least enough to make Nintendo's key releases million-sellers. Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and Wii Party U all sold 1 million copies or more by the close of December, with Wii U software selling 16 million units in total.
Somewhat predictably, the happiest news came from the 3DS, which sold 11.65 million units - down on the prior period's 12.7 million total, but enough to make the 3DS one of the most popular platforms in the market.
3DS software sold a combined total of 57.25 million units. Pokemon X & Y was by far the most successful with 11.6 million units sold worldwide, but it was joined in the multi-million club by Animal Crossing: New Leaf with 3.5 million, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team with 2 million, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past with 2.18 million (despite only being released on Nov. 21, 2013) and Tomodachi Collection with 1.8 million.
The 3DS has now sold 42.75 million units worldwide.

Nintendo is snubbing the chance to earn nearly $3bn in the next seven years by not bringing its IP to smartphones.
That’s according to a piece entitled “Nintendo’s $2.7bn mobile games opportunity that’s never going to happen” by SuperData Research.
“By all accounts, the notoriously proprietary-only publisher and device maker is floundering in an increasingly cross-platform and digital world,” it claimed. “A dogmatic approach to a changing, digital world may, in fact, spell its demise. The truth is that Nintendo’s business can’t simply redirect and adopt a free-to-play model. But there is a potential salvation in moving towards mobile and licensing of intellectual property
“Porting Mario, Zelda and Pikachu to smartphones would yield Nintendo an estimated $1.5bn in its first year. Based on historical sales figures on iOS and Android, we developed a bull and bear earnings scenario. Factoring in Nintendo’s premium brand equity and an average market price of $8.41 resulted in a low of $940m and a high of $2.7bn in sales.
However, the firm also identifies a key weakness in this strategy – the threat it would pose to its existing hardware.
“Once initial demand is satisfied, sales will drop off steeply. Worse, Nintendo’s business model is based on its (formerly) highly profitable hardware sales,” it added. “With its key software living on the iPhone and Android there would be no need to buy a Wii or 3DS and would undermine its profitable handheld market and change the Nintendo ecosystem.
“To survive, Nintendo will have to evolve. No doubt, Nintendo will have to let go of its fully integrated, proprietary nature, and ensure it maintains relevance in a growing cross-platform world. Now, for the first time in its history, does Nintendo seem ready to make a change. The company has been slow to adapt. But the market is saying it’s time.”

The Nintendo 2DS has made it into the tiny hands of 2.1 million customers worldwide since its launch on October 12, according to Nintendo's financial highlights (PDF link). The 3DS, which launched in February 2011, has shipped42.7 million units, while the DS family has shipped 154 million units in total.
Nintendo has sold 7.38 million copies of Animal Crossing: New Leaf worldwide since its initial Japan release in November 2012. New Leaf launched in North America, Europe and Australia in June 2013: From April 2013 to December 2013, the game sold 2.79 million units outside of Japan, and 730,000 copies in the country.
Nintendo posted a year-over-year net profit decline of 30 percent in the nine months leading to December 2013, with numbers dragged down by weaker-than-expected Wii U sales and console price cuts. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata and board members are taking smaller salaries for a temporary period, French news outlet AFP reported.

Between Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros .U, Nintendo's mustachioed mascot (whose year it wasn't) has shipped almost 6 million units on the Wii U. In figures revealed in the big N's financial briefing, NSMBU is now at 3.89 million for its lifetime shipments, while SM3DW is at around half of that with 1.94 million. Keep in mind that 2D Mario had the head-start on its 3D sibling when it launched alongside the Wii U, not to mention a much larger presence in system bundles.
The Mario platformers are two of five Wii U games that have shipped more than a million so far this fiscal year - that's between April and December 2013, by the by. The other three launched after April, so their shipments for the period represent lifetime figures anyway.
Coming in third behind the two Marios is yet another Mario, namely Mr. Luigi Mario with Super Luigi U. The green man's standalone expansion to NSMBUshipped 1.51 million after arriving in the summer.
It wasn't just the year of Luigi because Wii Party U and Zelda: Wind Waker HDboth got on in the act, shipping 1.24 million and 1.15 million respectively after their fall launches.

Nintendo is looking to cut the time from booting the Wii U to playing a game by introducing a quick start menu, one of the things planned for a system update in the early summer. As CEO Satoru Iwata said in this week's corporate briefing, Nintendo believes it can halve the time between starting the system and getting on with the playing.
As showcased in a vid from the briefing (via GoNintendo), the menu brings up a selection of the games you've recently played when you boot up the Wii U. Select one, then your user profile - and bear in mind you can make the Wii U select a profile automatically - and voila, you're a-bouncing on goombas.
This isn't the first time Nintendo's addressed the Wii U's load times, as last yearit cut down the time it took to return to the Wii U menu after exiting a game. Presumably by 2015 we'll be able to just glare at the Wii U and it'll start playingSuper Smash Bros., albeit with some minor cowering on the GamePad's part.

In a follow-up report to Nintendo's financial briefing today, an on-demand gaming service spanning multiple pieces of hardware is described as part of CEO Satoru Iwata's longterms plans. The first step toward this new on-demand service, the report says, was introducing Nintendo Network IDs on both Wii Uand 3DS.
This on-demand service would be tied to your Nintendo Network ID as opposed to the individual hardware being used – one ID for multiple devices, rewarding customers loyalty to an account as opposed to an individual piece of hardware, which may be replaced some day. And when the next version of that hardware comes along, certain features or content may not carry over, so for heavy users this loss of content ultimately shapes their habits and loyalty going forward.

Nintendo's recently cleared technical hurdles regarding the Wii U's Virtual Console offerings have a clear result - the company announced plans for Nintendo DS titles to join the Wii U's current offering.
Nintendo's quarterly financial meeting in Japan, in which Nintendo President Satoru Iwata laid out immediate and longterm plans for the company, also mentioned plans to license Nintendo characters to new partners. Who those partners may be is currently unclear, but the suggestion follows the company's Yoshi Island DLC for Sega's Sonic: Lost World and the recently revealed action game set in The Legend of Zelda universe, Hyrule Warriors.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata revealed the company is looking into non-wearable health monitors during a financial briefing in Japan today. New details on this venture, Iwata said, would be revealed this year, with a planned launch for Nintendo's fiscal year ending March 31, 2016.
Iwata said, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, that Nintendo's main theme for the next 10 years will be enhancing the quality of life through entertainment. Health is a large part of that, and Iwata even called out the cadre of wearable health devices already available on the market as evidence of the sector's importance to consumers.
Still, this is an especially odd direction granted Nintendo's inability to launch its first foray into health tech, the Wii Vitality Sensor. The Vitality Sensor wasannounced in 2009 and was designed to monitor the users' heart rate while playing games. Nintendo cited a problem with Wii Vitality Sensor prototypes reading a small percentage of users as the reason for canceling it.

Following a mildly profitable financial quarter, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata shared details of Nintendo's future strategies during its quarterly financial results briefing in Japan. Wall Street Journal's live translation of the eventreports that these plans will include attracting customers through smart phones, as well as an invigorated effort to support the Wii U Gamepad in new software.
During the conference, Iwata noted plans to "actively" use smart devices to "make connections with customers." Iwata dismissed previously reported ideas of releasing games on other platforms, instead suggesting that Nintendo will use smart devices to attract customers to its hardware.
Iwata said the company will focus on making software that showcases the Gamepad's capabilities, including its Near Field Communication technology. Iwata also said that Nintendo has overcome technological problems to making Virtual Console titles, a success that would be welcome by Wii U owners frustrated by the console's sparse retro offerings.
Plans to utilize the Gamepad's features will also reduce the waiting time for starting up games. A conceptual video on Nintendo's report depicts a Wii U user tapping the power button on the Gamepad. A line of software icons is displayed, allowing the player to immediately boot up a game and select a user account without visiting the Wii U's Wara Wara Plaza first.

During a corporate briefing today in Japan, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata confirmed Mario Kart 8 would launch on Wii U some time in May. The Wall Street Journal's Digits blog picked up the news during a Nintendo business briefing held in Japan.
Mario Kart 8, announced during E3 last year, is the latest in Nintendo's long-running arcade racing series. This new installment includes a gravity-defying mechanic that lets racers ride along walls.
Last week, Nintendo had to slash financial forecasts in light of weak Wii U sales. Originally the company had projected Wii U sales to reach a total of 9 million from March 2013 to March 2014. Nintendo now anticipates Wii U shipments will reach 2.8 million in that timeframe.

Unifying Nintendo Network ID across both platforms was the first step
A follow-up report to Nintendo’s press briefing this morning has detailed plans for an on-demand service for Wii U and 3DS.
Joystiq has translated the Japanese report that describes the service as part of president Satoru Iwata’s long-term plans for its gaming division. The unification of Nintendo Network IDs across Wii U and 3DS was apparently the first step toward on-demand.
Interesting the on-demand service will be tied to a Network ID and not individual hardware, meaning users (subscribers?) would be able to access content across multiple Nintendo devices – and who knows, perhaps non-Nintendo devices too.
As part of the report Iwata stressed the importance of unifying its OS across devices, in much the same way as is seen with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android.
Said the exec: “Console and portable hardware can't be separated in the future; they're brother and sister.”

January 31st, 2014, 00:41 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo president Saturo Iwata this morning outlined his vision for the saving of Nintendo.
It’s not a short document, In fact, it’s an incredibly long onethat touches on a huge number of subjects, some of which are predictable and some of which are surprising.
Here MCV highlights the key points and summarises exactly what they mean:
* Iwata on snubbing the naysayers:
“Nintendo will not change. We do not hold a pessimistic view of the future of dedicated video game platforms. We therefore believe that dedicated video game platforms which integrate hardware and software will remain our core business. Naturally, we are moving ahead with research and development efforts for future hardware as we have done before and we are not planning to give up our own hardware systems and shift our axis toward other platforms.”
Translated: We’re not going multiplatform. We’ve got more hardware on the way. And no, we’re not doing a Sega. Do one.
* Iwata on Nintendo’s history of evolution:
“Nintendo has always flexibly innovated itself in line with the times. After Nintendo started the manufacture and sale of traditional Japanese playing cards 125 years ago, it has innovated itself from a playing card company to a toy company, a toy company to an electronic toy company and an electronic toy company to a company running video game platforms. What has remained the same, however, was we always tried to create something new from materials and technologies available at that time and to position entertainment as our core business.”
Translated: We’ve been around for over a century and you reckon we can’t survive an iffy console launch? Yeah right! We used to make playing cards, then we made arcade machine, now we make consoles. Who knows what we’ll make tomorrow. Metal gorillas? Interactive doormats? Calcium powered haiku generators? Time will tell. But we’re going nowhere, son.
* Iwata on Nintendo’s limited manpower:
“Nintendo is not a resource-rich company, with only a little more than 5,000 employees. We have often received advice on overcoming our weaknesses in comparison with other companies and have been questioned about why Nintendo doesn’t follow suit when something is already booming. From a medium to long-term standpoint, however, we don’t believe that following trends will lead to a positive outcome for Nintendo as an entertainment company. Instead, we should continue to make our best efforts to seek a blue ocean with no rivals and create a new market with innovative offerings as a medium- to long-term goal.”
Translated: Releasing a new console that offers 4k graphics and runs four SLI GeForce Titans just to try and ‘beat’ PS4 and Xbox One ain’t our thing. Sony and Microsoft have their thing, we’ll have ours thanks very much.
* Iwata on Wii U not being doomed:
“As a platform in its second year, Wii U is currently in a very difficult position. Obviously, under the current situation where the company has to report an operating loss, simply executing a price reduction as a way to defuse the situation is not an option. Unfortunately, as the current situation of Wii U shows, we have not been able to fully communicate the value of the GamePad. What’s even worse is that there even appear to be not a small number of consumers who think the GamePad is one of the accessories for the previous platform, Wii. Therefore, we intend to take on this challenge, and I would like to have this solved before the year-end sales season.”
Translated: Have you seen our financials? And you want me to CUT the price of Wii U? Are you mental? Look, our adverts have been rubbish and if we can just advertise the thing better folk are bound to buy it, right? Because it’s a brilliant console isn’t it? ISN’T IT?
* Iwata on NFC being a thing people care about:
“The GamePad is the only video game platform with an NFC reader/writer function. Pokémon Rumble U has already taken advantage of this, but aside from this title, Wii U has failed to make use of the full potential of this function so far. This year, we will make full use of this function by preparing multiple proposals, including the implementation of NFC payments with JR East’s Suica, which we announced on a previous occasion. We will showcase our detailed propositions for utilizing the NFC functionality at E3 in Los Angeles in June.”
Translated: Name me one other console that lets you stand plastic figures on the controller? Go on, just one. You can’t, can you? Wii U may lag behind in the graphics and third party software stakes but it’s the world’s No.1 console when it comes to standing plastic figures on the controller. And we’re gonna go BIG with that, baby.
* Iwata on being impatient with technology:
“After starting up Wii U, there is a wait of over 20 seconds before we can select a video game title, and hence it is not an ideal situation for users now. To solve this problem, a quick start menu for the GamePad will become a reality after a future system update planned for early summer. We think that this function will make you feel that the time to start up a Wii U software title is cut by more than 50 per cent, and that it will also lead to more Wii U users understanding the appealing nature of the GamePad.”
Translated: Thinking about it, the big problem with Wii U has got to be the amount of time it takes to load up and boot a game, right? Well we can sort that out real easy. Maybe then you’ll all FINALLY understand.
* Iwata on the forgotten success of 3DS:
“The situation for Nintendo 3DS is very different from Wii U. Even though we weren’t able to achieve explosive growth in the overseas markets during the year-end sales season, the fact remains that Nintendo 3DS was the top-selling game device around the world last year.”
Translated: OK, OK, folk might not ‘get’ the Wii U just yet. But we’ve sold nearly 43m of these bad boys. Count ‘em. What have you sold 43m of?
* Iwata on allowing users to transfer their accounts across devices:
“On Wii U, we launched Nintendo Network IDs. This is the first step of our efforts to transform customer relationship management from device-based to account-based. Our future platform will connect with our consumers based on accounts, not devices. Of course, when we do launch new hardware in the future, rather than re-creating an installed base from scratch as we did in the past, we wish to build on our existing connections with our consumers through NNIDs and continue to maintain them.”
Translated: See, we’re leading the way once again. Now if you buy games from us you WON’T have to pay again if someone steals your console. What, Sony, Microsoft, Apple, Google and every other tech company in existence already does this? Bullshit! You’re kidding?
* Iwata on smartphones:
“Given that the competition for consumers’ time and attention has become fierce, I feel that how we will take advantage of smart devices is an extremely important question to answer. However, in order to be absolutely clear, let me emphasize that this does not mean simply supplying Nintendo games on smart devices. Taking advantage of smart devices means connecting with all consumers, including those who do not own Nintendo’s video game systems, through smart devices and communicating the value of our entertainment offerings. I have often heard the opinion from many that Nintendo should release its first-party content on smart devices. Many people say that releasing Nintendo’s software assets for smart devices would expand our business. However, we believe that we cannot show our strength as an integrated hardware-software business in this field, and therefore it would difficult to continue the same scale of business in the medium- to long term. Therefore, we would like to, instead of directly expanding our business on smart devices, focus on achieving greater ties with our consumers on smart devices and expanding our platform business. We will use a small, select team of developers to achieve it. We feel that we will not be able to gain the support of many consumers unless we are able to provide something truly valuable that is unique to Nintendo. Accordingly, I have not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters. However, if you report that we will release Mario on smart devices, it would be a completely misleading statement.”
Translated: Smartphones, smartphones, smartphones. I’m sick of it. Just cut it out, alright? Look, we’re not going to release our games on smartphones. OK? We’re not doing it. Although we might, I suppose. You’ll have to ask the team handling the smartphone stuff. I’ve told them they can do whatever they want. What, they’ve announced Super Mario 3D World 2 for iOS? You’re winding me up, right? I just thought they were going to make an eShop app? FFS!
* Iwata on the price of console games:
“The way in which dedicated video game systems and their software are sold has not changed significantly since the business model of dedicated video game platforms was first established 30 years ago. This simple model received widespread support from consumers that enabled us to create today’s market. The decision to change it is the manifestation of our recognition that we cannot expect this model to work forever amid dynamic changes in people’s lifestyles.”
Translated: Personally I think you’re crazy if you think £40 is too much for something as fantastic Super Mario 3D World but fine, if you’re not going to buy the sodding thing have it your way. You can download the bloody thing for nowt if you like but then we’ll make you pay £2.50 FOR EACH LEVEL! How d’you like dem apples?
* Iwata on rewarding loyal customers with discounted games:
“Until now it has been taken for granted that software is offered to users at the same price regardless of how many titles they purchase in a year. Based on our account system, if we can offer flexible price points to consumers who meet certain conditions, we can create a situation where these consumers can enjoy our software at cheaper price points when they purchase more. Inviting friends to start playing a particular software title is also an example of a possible condition. If we can achieve such a sales mechanism, we can expect to increase the number of players per title, and the players will play our games with more friends. When one platform maintains a high active use ratio, the software titles which run on it have a higher potential to be noticed by many, which leads to more people playing with more titles.”
Translated: You bought a Wii U? My god, I love you. Here, have some money off! And get your mates to buy one too, right?
* Iwata on sharing around that rich stable of IP:
“We are planning to utilize Nintendo’s abundance of character IP more actively. I think the reason that Nintendo is now considered to have this ‘abundance of character IP’ is perhaps because of our passive approach toward the character IP licensing business, which tends to have a high risk of damaging the value of the character. However, we are going to change our policy going forward. To be more precise, we will actively expand our character licensing business, including proactively finding appropriate partners. Also, we will be flexible about forming licensing relationships in areas we did not license in the past, such as digital fields, provided we are not in direct competition and we can form win-win relationships. By moving forward with such activities globally, we aim to increase consumer exposure to Nintendo characters by making them appear in places other than on video game platforms.”
Translated: They’re making a Sly Cooper film? Really? Then why on earth aren’t we making a Mario film? Sod it, sign off a trilogy. This is a license to print money!
* Iwata on the opportunity of emerging markets:
“So far, we have localized our products which we distribute in developed markets, where video game markets have been firmly established. This method worked to some extent in the past, but it has recently become far more difficult to recoup our investment because of increasing hardware production costs and the cost of localizing highly sophisticated and complicated software. For a large majority of consumers in the new markets, however, the current prices of hardware and software in the existing markets are generally difficult to accept. To leverage Nintendo’s strength as an integrated hardware-software business, we will not rule out the idea of offering our own hardware for new markets, but for dramatic expansion of the consumer base there, we require a product family of hardware and software with an entirely different price structure from that of the developed markets. As you might know from today’s topics of redefining the concept of a video game platform and taking advantage of smart devices, we aim to connect with consumers who do not own Nintendo’s video game systems yet, which will play an important role in cultivating new markets.”
Translated: They’re opening up the Chinese market? Sweeeet! They’ll pay £250 for a Wii U, right? What, they won’t? Oh. Forget what I said about Super Mario 3D World 2 on iOS. Get on that PRONTO. They’ll have NEVER played anything like it before. A couple of hours with that and they’ll sell a kidney to get their hands on a Wii U.
* Iwata on expanding beyond games into the health market:
“We will attempt to establish a new platform business with which we can leverage our strengths, but which is independent from our video game platform business. What Nintendo will try to achieve in the next 10 years is a platform business that improves people’s Quality Of Life in enjoyable ways. While we will continue to devote our energy to dedicated video game platforms, what I see as our first step into a new business area in our endeavor to improve QOL is. The theme of ‘health’. It has been a long time since people started to say that the console era has now shifted to a new mobile era, with wearable technology in the spotlight at CES this month. Following others into the exceedingly crowded market of mobile applications or the market of wearable technology that is expected to become increasingly competitive and fighting with brute force is not our way of doing business. Yet again, it is our intention to go into a new blue ocean. With that said, we wish to achieve an integrated hardware-software platform business that, instead of providing mobile or wearable features, will be characterized by a new area of what we like to call non-wearable technology.”
Translated: Ha ha ha! And you thought we were going to announce a new console? Idiots. Remember when you found your gran playing Wii Fit? That’s some blue ocean thinking, bitch. Now I’m gonna create a whole new division of this company that has nowt to do with you whiny online gaming pricks and just sells stuff to those lovely mums and families who never slag us off online. Just imagine Wii Fit without the Balance Board and Wii Remote. The idea’s probably too radical for your puny mind! Sorry, what’s a Kinect? You just made that up didn’t you? And if Microsoft had have made such a thing I’d had heard about it because it would be the most popular thing in the world, surely?

Demand on Wii U isn't strong enough.Said Warner Bros. in a statement passed to Eurogamer: "Based on demand for DLC content on the system, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has made the decision to remove its offering of the upcoming all-new story campaign for Wii U."The story campaign is the undeniable star attraction of the Batman: Arkham Origins five-piece Season Pass, which costs £16 on Wii U. Because of that, Nintendo will refund the entire amount to Wii U Season Pass holders, reported AllGamesBeta.

Saturo Iwata has hinted that even greater reforms could be on the way for Nintendo than first thought.
Speaking to The Nikkei, the Nintendo president expanded on his guidance issued earlier this week, saying that the company would even consider mergers and acquisitions as a viable strategy to stabilise the company.
“We should abandon old assumptions about our businesses. We are considering M&As as an option,” he stated. “For this reason, we'll step up share buybacks.
“We'll change the way we sell products, by managing customer information via the internet. We'll offer discounts to steady, regular customers. We'll cultivate emerging markets and launch new businesses in health and other areas. In an emerging country, you can expand the user base only after you offer a product line different from advanced economies in pricing.”
Iwata also touched upon Nintendo’s sizable cash reserves, saying that it’s a strategy based on the plans laid down by his predecessor Hiroshi Yamauchi.
“Mr. Yamauchi often said ‘Shitsui-taizen, Tokui-reizen’ meaning that we should act regally when things are bad, and be calm when things are going well. Were he alive now, he would tell me to carry an air of confidence.
“We built up cash reserves when earnings were strong. Because the entertainment industry ebbs and flows in wild swings, Mr Yamauchi insisted it is vital to have deep pockets. Without savings, we could not have recovered from a single failure in game systems. Even now, we can afford many options because of our robust financial standing.”

Crowdfunded arcade-style shoot-'em-up Redux: Dark Matters could follow up on its recent Sega Dreamcast launch with an appearance on the Wii U and 3DS eShops, developer René Hellwig told Nintendo Life this week.
"Since we developed the game on PC with HD graphics it will be easy for us to port the game to Nintendo consoles," Hellwig explained. "Nintendo is more straightforward with Indie devs, and we believe that in the coming years Nintendo consoles will be a great place to publish Indie games."
Redux: Dark Matters is slated to hit Steam and iOS devices this year. Fellow Dreamcast devotee developer NG.DEV.TEAM turned to Indiegogo to drum up support for 3DS and Wii U ports of its run-and-gun platformer Gunlord last year, but failed to meet its funding goal.
