[Mike] is a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and now that he has a daughter it’s a great time to pass this epic quest down to the next generation. There’s a problem with explaining the plot to her daughter, though: even though the player can name the character after themselves, there’s no way to change the gendered pronouns. Yes, it’s a problem that could have been solved by a cameo by Professor Oak asking, “Are you a boy or a girl?’ but [Mike] came up with a better solution:changing all the pronouns with a ROM hack.
There are a few ‘problems’ with altering the dialogue with a ROM hack. Most importantly, all the new pronouns need to be the same length as the words they replace. [Mike] is using the word ‘milady’ to replace ‘my lad’ and ‘master,’ but also had to take a page from critiques of modern epics and replace ‘swordsman’ with ‘swordmain.’
So far, everything is working as planned and the [Mike]‘s daughter [Maya] is enjoying seeing herself sail her dragon ship and battle foes. It’s a great effort to bring some semblance of gender neutrality to a classic game, and an awesome project for a really great dad.
Thanks to [Guillaume] for sending this one in.

When we first played Epic Mickey 2, we tested out its co-op mechanic, taking on Mickey’s long-forgotten precursor, Oswald, in order to solve puzzles alongside the mouse. Junction Point resurrected the rabbit as an anti-hero in the previous game, although he experienced a change of heart later on. The pair of heroes are reunited in Epic Mickey 2, but while they may share similarities, Oswald doesn’t get a brush. Instead, he’s able to bring the Cartoon Wasteland’s clapped-out contraptions back to sparking life with the aid of a magical remote control – a neat way to avoid co-op conflicts over whether the paint or thinner should be used to solve problems.

WayForward's half-genie mascot Shantae returns in a new downloadable 3DS game, revealed in the penultimate issue of Nintendo Power. Shantae and the Pirate's Curse has the now fully human Shantae teaming up with the pirate Risky Boots, who has just the best name, to find the 30 Tinkerbats who have stolen Shantae's genie powers.
As a result of her de-geniefication, Shantae relies on "Pirate Gear" she finds in labyrinths, instead of dance powers, to gain new abilities and access new locales. The Bone Daggers, for example, can be thrown into walls to make footholds.
You can see a few screens on Nintendo Power's preview page, but to see more you should consider buying the actual magazine.

Nintendo will allow you to create 12 user accounts per Wii U. These profiles are tied to your game saves, settings, browser bookmarks and play history, Nintendo has announced. But eShop purchases can be played by any user on the system, company boss Satoru Iwata explained in today's Nintendo Direct conference for Japanese gamers (translated byNeoGAF).Boot up the Wii U and your TV screen will be entirely devoted to Nintendo's new Miiverse social platform, which shows information on new games and details what your friends are playing. In one truly bizarre moment, Iwata forced Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime to video chat with him while he drew all over his face.
The GamePad will house a more standard menu, which includes icons to launch downloaded content and the currently loaded game disc. It looks very similar to the current 3DS interface. You'll need a Nintendo Network ID to use online functions such as video chat (presumably the details of your eShop account if you've used a 3DS).Once again Nintendo confirmed that you'll be able to interact with the Network via other Nintendo systems, PCs and smartphone apps. The company previously announced a plan to make the 3DS eShop accessible via these devices. Most importantly of all, pausing gameplay to access the Wii U menu uses the same sound as pressing the Home button on the current Wii. Da-dah!

Are you ready for Nintendo's Wii U console to arrive in a couple of weeks, packing not only a GamePadbut also extensive online-enabled features like the Miiverse, Wii U Chat, TVii and eShop? Good, because as IGN mentions, the Wii U isn't. Not unlike many games shipping lately, the console will see a software update available at debut that downloads all of those features for the first time. That shouldn't be a problem for early adopting gamers as long as everything goes smoothly, but so far early-arriving review / preview units don't have the functionality, although it should be delivered in an update before the launch. It's been a few years since we had a new console launch (relive the PS3 fat, pre-RROD Xbox 360 and Wii here) and quickly-changing software is certainly the name of the game, we'll let you know as soon as we can how the Nintendo Network delivers.

Ubisoft CEO says Nintendo appears to be sending more units of hardware to US than other countries
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
The first country to get the Wii U will also get the most units of the new Nintendo hardware, it seems. Speaking in a post-earnings investor conference call today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot carefully fielded a question about how he believes Nintendo is allocating its launch hardware between countries.
"The US seems to be having more machines than the other countries, but that's the only thing I can say," Guillemot said.
Regional allocations could be a touchy topic for Nintendo in light of the original Wii launch. That system was an instant sell-out upon its launch in 2006, and remained in short supply for the next year, a situation Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime lamented as a "missed opportunity." Things may be different this time around. For one, Fils-Aime has stressed that the company learned a lot from previous shortages, and that its supply chain is solid.
The Wii U is scheduled to launch in the US November 18, with a UK release trailing on November 30 and the system making its Japanese debut December 8. Nintendo has forecast 10 million unit sales by the end of the year, and a number of retailers have run through their pre-order allocations.

In an unexpected move, classic fighting IP Mortal Kombat is to return to the silver screen.
Total Film reports that Warner Bros has already begun work on the project, with rumours suggesting that it will revolve around a supermarket worker who develops special powers and ends up fighting loads of dudes. And most likely scantily clad girls.
“We're preparing right now for the film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us," Warner exec Lance Sloan stated. "He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film."
The Mortal Kombat IP made its gaming debut way back in 1992 and has since gone on to receive nearly 19 sequels.
The first Mortal Kombat film was released in 1995 and was followed by sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation in 1997.

This is something you don’t see every day.
Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has taken to YouTube to host his very own unboxing video. In which he refers to it as a “Wii U unboxing ceremony”, dons a pair of white gloves and says he feels like he’s “a host on a shopping channel”.
There’s also a video about Wii U user accounts (of which ten are permitted per console) and Wii U Chat.
But really, just skip all of that and check out the unboxing. This is why we need Japan to remain at the very heart of the global games industry.

Publishers do not lack understanding on next-gen console's capabilities, says dev icon
Third-party development for the Wii U is being affected by the console’s unique capabilities and difficulties with making its games multi-platform releases, Shigeru Miyamoto has claimed.
Speaking to IGN, the development icon said that the need for some businesses to develop multi-platform titles to maximise their earnings was not always compatible with Nintendo’s own ambitions to create unique hardware.
He added however that the console giant had been meeting with developers to convince them that they would be able to create new experiences and build successful titles.
"The fact of the matter is that most third-party licensees from a business point of view, had to create multi-platform titles – and because Nintendo has been trying to create very unique hardware, oftentimes it was not considered the first choice for them to work on multi-platform software," said Miyamoto.
"So it’s the entire company decision-making process that is hindering developer’s ability from making unique titles on Wii U hardware. Once again, my job as one of the developers is to meet with the individual people and convince them that they’ll be able to create brand new entertainment that they really wish to realise. My job is to try to assist them in that fashion.”

CyberConnect2 president Hiroshi Matsuyama revealed that work is already underway on a new game set in the anthropomorphic Solatorobo universe. The news came from Spanish gaming site Koi-Nya (via VG247) where Matsuyama noted at a Barcelona-based Namco Bandai event that he'd like to make another game in the Little Tail Bronx franchise.Sadly, he could not reveal a platform or any idea when to expect it.The last game in the series was 2011's DS exclusive action-RPG Solatorobo: Red the Hunter, the spiritual successor to 1998's PlayStation title Tail Concerto. Our Rich Stanton liked Solatorobo quite a bit. "Even on DS, where good RPGs are plentiful, this is in the top tier," he wrote in his review, before lavishing it with a respectable 8/10. "Solatorobo deserves much better than obscurity," he added.

The first Wii U game reviews have been published in the latest issue of GamesMaster, which is with subscribers now and on sale officially from Tuesday, November 6.
The magazine offers verdicts on bothNintendo Land (86%) and New Super Mario Bros. U (82%).On Nintendo Land GM says there's "a heck of a lot more to it" than merely showing off the new GamePad. It calls the Lugi's Mansion, Mario Chase and Animal Crossing games in particular "some of the most innovative, raucous and party-fuelling fun we've ever had with a console."
While the single-player content might not be as memorable, GamesMaster says Nintendo Land is ultimately "an essential purchase for party lovers".
On New Super Mario Bros. U GM says it was "surprised" by the amount of innovation on show in its later levels, and despite being an easier franchise entry concludes that NSMBU "bodes well for Mario's future Wii U outings".
The verdicts are part of a monster Wii special in GamesMaster 258, which you can buy online now and have delivered to your door, or purchase digitally via iOS and Android.
Nintendo has confirmed a Wii U release date of November 18 in the US, and a Wii U release date of November 30 in Europe.
The company has set the US Wii U price at $299 for the basic model, while the UK Wii U pricestarts at £230.

With the Wii U launching in under two weeks on November 18, Nintendo of America is kicking its marketing into the next gear. In addition to new TV spots that show "How U Will Play Next" the company is introducing 5,000 Wii U kiosks to retailers like Target, Best Buy, GameStop, Walmart and Toys 'R' Us.GamesIndustry International actually already saw one of these at a New York Best Buy this weekend.
Some of the Wii U kiosks will enable consumers to get a hands-on game play experience while others will supply specially created video content that highlights Wii U's games and features. Some of the titles being spotlighted at retail include Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, Sing Party, ZombiU and Rayman Legends.
The consensus from analysts is that Wii U is likely to sell out this holiday season, but as the console enters 2013 and Microsoft and Sony look to further cut prices, Nintendo could be under much greater pressure.

Fceux SVN r2734 is compiled. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.
Fceux SVN changelog:
r2728
fix encoding of fk23c.cpp
r2729
applied patch from Joe Nahmias to prevent a segfault

via http://dsx86.patrickaalto.com/DSblog.html
This is just a short update about my VHS digitizing project. I am currently digitizing the eight VHS tape (of about 30 tapes I plan to digitize), so it will still take a couple of months before I have digitized everything. With the first ten or so tapes I have a pretty good idea about what I want to save and what not, but the remaining tapes I have not yet looked at properly, so it is possible there is a lot of stuff I can simply skip. But even so, I doubt I will get back to my programming hobbies before the end of the year.
I do have some DSx86-related news waiting for a proper time (which is not up to me) to announce, so I might have some interesting news to write about even before I have finished my VHS digitizing project. Also, I have not yet made up my mind about whether to simply continue with Nintendo DS programming, or try porting DSx86 to some other platforms, but it looks like I still have a couple of months to think about this. :-)

Neimod and others over at 3dbrew.org are collecting donations for a decap of the custom Nintendo SoC (System-On-a-Chip) from a retail 3DS. The goal is to extract the boot code and other proprietary information. Quote: 'We have gotten a price quote from a professional lab on the deal (removal, decap, delayer, SEM imaging) and it came out to $400 per layer of the chip, which they estimate will come to about $2000 total. Plus the cost of the 3DS we will be donating for the hardware sample(s). The numbers of layers is approximate because they likely don't know how many layers are in the SoC until they actually decap it. In the worst case we estimate between 8 or 10 layers. For now we're trying to reach their initial quote of $2000 USD and send in the 3DS to get it started. Later on we can still decide to have the remaining layers imaged. You will have the noble honor of helping the 3DS community progress forward. We're also considering giving contributors a copy of the images produced as thanks.
