Mind Candy title reigns atop the Nintendo handheld chart for unprecedented 15 weeks
The DS may be in its twilight years, but success is still to be had for those who nail the correct strategy.
Mind Candy’s Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo has set a new record by topping the single format DS charts for an eye-watering 15 weeks in succession.
This betters the previous record set by Nintendo’s own Dr. Kawashima’s Brain Training.

Iwata talks regional sales, Wii U predictions, selling hardware at a loss and digital downloads
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]www.nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo revealed its first full-year loss in company history yesterday, with the business $531 million in the red after a poor launch for the 3DS, declining Wii sales, a weak Christmas period and tough exchange rates due to the strong Yen.
Speaking in an investor presentation following the results, president Satoru Iwata offered his analysis of the current home and handheld video game market from Nintendo's perspective, looking at the key markets of Japan, the US and Europe, as well as addressing future strategies for 3DS, Wii U and digital growth.
Chart analysis
2012 Hardware Units Sales in Japan
Japan is Nintendo's strongest market. Hardware units sales for the first quarter of the year have been impressive for the 3DS with only the PlayStation 3 a noticeable competitor. Sony's PS Vita by comparison looks in poor shape, being outsold in the handheld market by its predecessor the PSP.
"We believe this is a sign that the Nintendo 3DS has a strong presence in the market," noted Iwata. "On the other hand, since this year started, we have seen the Wii sales quickly losing momentum. In the home console market this year, Sony's PlayStation 3 remains in good shape," he added.
Of the top 20 software titles in Japan so far this year, 15 are for Nintendo systems, 13 of which are 3DS games and five of those first-party releases.
Over in the US the story is quite different, with Iwata acknowledging that Microsoft's Xbox 360 has maintained hardware sales momentum in 2012, although it does not seem to be due to sales of the Kinect peripheral.
"Some Kinect titles fared well in the chart towards the end of last year, but it seems that this momentum did not continue, so Kinect is probably not responsible for the Xbox 360's current sales growth," he said.
Kinect is probably not responsible for the Xbox 360's current sales growth
Satoru Iwata, Nintendo
There were eight Xbox 360 games in the top 20 best-sellers for 2012 according to NPD, compared to six from Sony and six from Nintendo. Iwata added that sales of the 3DS in the region are below expectations.
"Considering that the U.S. market is two or three times the size of its Japanese equivalent, I believe that the sales of the Nintendo 3DS in the U.S. are far below the level that it could potentially reach." There's also still a decent market for the original DS, according to Nintendo.
UK software sales Jan-March 2012, highlighting the dominance of Xbox 360 games.
In Europe it's all change again, with Sony showing the strongest in terms of hardware sales according to Nintendo estimates. "Although the Nintendo 3DS has recently increased its weekly sales, it is far from a satisfactory level," he offered.
Breaking down European regions, Nintendo noted that of the top 20 best-selling titles in 2012, Nintendo claims ten hits in Germany, and nine each in Spain and France. There are six Nintendo titles in the UK charts, but "the UK market is virtually the only market in Europe where the Xbox 360 has a strong presence," according to Iwata. "In fact, it dominates the PlayStation 3, and it is in stark contrast to the other European markets."
Sales forecasts for 2012
Sales forecasts for Nintendo hardware/software. Forecasts for Wii U and original Wii are combined.
Nintendo has said it expects to return to a profit in the current financial year, but disappointingly isn't yet breaking out sales of the original Wii and Wii U, due for sale before Christmas 2012. Instead it has combined sales in its forecasts, expecting 10.5 million combined Wii unit sales and 70 million combined Wii software sales.
"We think that the software sales of the Nintendo DS and the Wii will rather significantly decrease due to the small number of games scheduled in this fiscal year," said Iwata.
"We don't anticipate that the software sales of the Wii U can compensate for the decrease in those of the Wii because the Wii U will be launched as late as in the holiday season and then the total unit sales of the Wii U will be limited in this fiscal year. This is one of the reasons our business performance inevitably fluctuates when we change platforms."
Software sales forecasts for the Wii U and the 3DS include those to be downloaded via digital distribution but exclude Virtual Console software and download-only software.
Sales of the 3DS are expected to climb to 18.5 million with game sales of 73 million.
Selling at a loss
Speaking of the 3DS, Iwata quite simply stated that in the first half of the financial year Nintendo intends to "get out of the situation that we sell the hardware below cost," following last year's poor results. Software must remain evergreen said Iwata, rolling out a well-worn list of Nintendo franchises, before admitting that last year suffered with a large gap between 3DS releases "which delayed the beginning of the year-end sales season and we eventually missed our goal of the sales forecast."
Expanding the digital business
But the headline news from Nintendo's conference call was the reveal that it intends to release digital games at the same time as physical products, although solid details were thin on the ground.
Over 70 % of 3DS users in the US and Japan have connected to the internet compared to 50% in Europe
"The company will offer the software titles that Nintendo itself publishes in both packaged and digital download formats so that our consumers can choose the way to purchase them," offered Iwata.
He revealed that in Japan and the US over 70 per cent of 3DS users have connected to the internet, while in that figure is only 50 per cent in Europe and Australia, "which is not a satisfactory level yet."
Iwata said he wanted to continue to use traditional retail to sell digital content using codes purchased at physical or online stores, and noted a difficulty in exposing potential customers to digital content. "If only the consumers who proactively visit the Nintendo eShop are aware of the digital download software that we deploy, there is no chance that our digital business can drastically expand," he said.

'The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009', claims indie publisher
Game sales on Nintendo's digital platform WiiWare are almost non-existent, claims the founder of indie publisher Nicalis.
Speaking to GoNintendo, Tyrone Rodriguez said that he was forced into cancelling Nigoro’s side-scrolling game La-Mulana after two years of development because of the tiny customer-base on the system.
He added that the game had also failed to pass Nintendo’s submission process in the US and EU, despite already having DLC in place.
“The decision to cancel publishing of La-Mulana was a tough call, but waiting two years for Nigoro to finish development has made it near impossible to sell sufficient units on Wii,” said Rodriguez.
“The WiiWare market has a fraction of the players from 2008. The window for release and success of software on the platform ended in 2009 and took a very steep decline. Players have moved onto other digital download platforms.”

If you can't wait to spend some of those coins, Nintendo is offering new rewards for its Club Nintendo program. Four new downloadable games have been made available for May, including a pair of 3DS titles and two WiiWare games.
Art Style: Pictobits is the frontrunner for our hard-earned coins, a delightful DSiWare puzzle game ported to the 3DS. Pictobitsdebuted next to Majora's Mask, so you may not remember it. The other high-profile game is a 3DS port ofUrban Champion, the first fighting game to appear on the NES and quite possibly the worst game to appear on the NES.
The two WiiWare games are Snowpack Park and Eco Shooter: Plant 3D. All four games will be available for download until May 31.

Nintendo's strategy with the 3DS's early years and its forthcoming Wii U launch is to put core-orientated games ahead of efforts to attract the mass market, according to CEO Satoru Iwata.Speaking in an investor Q&A following its financial report last week, Iwata explained that the platform holder has learned from mistakes made with the Wii.While that console succeeded in attracting new customers with more casual titles such as Wii Sports, he admitted Nintendo had then struggled to convince core gamers to take the platform seriously, which negatively impacted the system's long term success."The Wii was able to reach a large number of new consumers who had never played games before by bringing hands-on experiences with its Wii Sports and Wii Fit," he explained."However, we could not adequately create the situation that such new consumers played games frequently or for long, consistent periods. As a result, we could not sustain a good level of profit."Moreover, regrettably, what we prioritised in order to reach out to the new audience was a bit too far from what we prioritised for those who play games as their hobby. Consequently, we presume some people felt that the Wii was not a game system for them or they were not willing to play with the Wii even though some compelling games had been released."Accordingly, Iwata explained, it decided not to flood the 3DS's early release slate with casual games, instead prioritising core titles such as Super Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Ocarina of Time 3D and Mario Kart 7. It intends to take a similar approach with the Wii U when it launches later this year."Once consumers have a notion that 'this system is not for us', we have learned that it is extremely difficult to change their perceptions later," said Iwata."Therefore, in promoting the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, we have announced that we would like 'width' and 'depth' to coexist."With the Nintendo DS and the Wii, the approach of 'width' was well accepted by many people; however, what we did in terms of 'depth' was not satisfactory for some consumers. This time, we would like consumers to be satisfied in both aspects."In order to do so, we started to work on the 'depth' aspect first, and the current and existing software you can see for the Nintendo 3DS is based on that idea. In the future, the approach will evolve," he continued."Our approach for the Wii U is basically the same. By doing so continuously, we are expecting that the number of game users per household will increase and as the gaming population increases, we believe we can create a sustainable video game market."

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has said that game publishers are divided in their opinions over how digital software should be priced versus their packaged retail counterparts.
Iwata said as much in a recent discussion with investors regarding the recent announcement that Nintendo will sell all first party Wii U and 3DS titles (beyond New Super Mario Bros. 2 in August) in both packaged retail and digital download form (as Sony does with Vita)."We do not hold such a premise that digitally distributed software has less value [than packaged versions]," said Iwata decisively, reaffirming that Nintendo plans to sell both versions of the software at the same price.
He believes that some consumers, like himself, "find the value in being able to store a number of software titles in a hardware system and being able to bring them with me wherever I go".
Nintendo has sought the opinions of publishers but this has apparently proved indecisive. "as we have discussed this with a number of software publishers around the world, we have found that their opinions are completely divided on the topic of the price points of the digital distribution of packaged software. Some publishers believe that the digital versions should be cheaper while others insist that both versions must be set at exactly the same price," he said.
The unnamed attendee who's question Iwata was addressing during the financial briefing suggested that "consumers might consider the value of the digitally purchased software lower than packaged software because the digital software can run on the purchasers' gaming systems only".
Vita games offered via the PS Store are usually priced $5 lower than their retail equivalents. Has Sony got it right, or is Nintendo's philosophy more on the mark?

Not worth the risk except for Call of Duty and Battlefield, says Free Radical founder Steve Ellis
Free Radical founder Steve Ellis has this advice for studios looking to start their own unique FPS franchise- stay away.
Ellis made a splash by writing the multiplayer element of Rare's Goldeneye N64, before going on to found Free Radical and launching the Timesplitters series.
"Nobody really buys any FPSes unless they're called Call Of Duty," he said in an interview with Edge.
"I guess Battlefield did okay, but aside from that pretty much every FPS loses money. I mean, Crysis 2: great game, but there's no way it came anywhere close to recouping its dev costs."
Ellis's studio was scooped up by Crytek last year, sparing it the humiliation of administration after no publisher could be found for Timesplitters 4.

Over a third of Pokémon players are female, according to a new GameVision Brand Map report.
39 per cent of all players of Nintendo's huge franchise are female, which is higher than the average game (31 per cent). Males aged 15 to 19 comprise a further 13 per cent of the market.
This week we take a look at the GameVision Brand Map for Pokémon. We asked 6,789 gamers about this franchise. 1,275 had played a Pokémon game within the last six months and we asked 500 of these to tell us about the brand in detail.
The Pokémon IP is most enjoyed because of the ‘tricks and skills’ required, with 35 per cent of gamers saying this was their most preferred game aspect. The level of ‘involvement in the story’ was enjoyed by 29 per cent of those who have experienced the brand, while ‘short play periods’ and ‘explore and discover’ were each enjoyed by 26 and 25 per cent of gamers respectively.
Currently play rates are highest amongst Italian gamers, with 22 per cent playing. 60 per cent of players in Europe are under the age of 20, compared to 46 per cent for the average game. 10 to 14 year-old males make up the largest market and 23 per cent of Pokémon players.
Pokémon fans also enjoy other Nintendo titles. The most played games amongst Pokémon consumers are Wii Sports (69 per cent), Mario Kart (64 per cent) and Super Mario Bros (59 per cent).
Although the Pokémon franchise is perhaps best known for its competitive gameplay, the enjoyment derived from the non-violent aspects of the game may help explain why it has a higher-than-average volume of female players compared to male players.

Nintendo is already guiding you through the Louvre with a 3DS, but a newly published US patent application takes that kind of tourism to a very literal new level. Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto's concept describes a way to direct lost tourists by beaming position information through an overhead grid of infrared transmitters to a mobile device (portrayed as a DS Lite) held by the confused visitor below. The handheld then talks wirelessly to a server that lights up floor displays with maps and directions, and a helpful app on the device lets visitors pick their route while they read up on sightseeing tips. Like with any patent, there's no certainty that Nintendo will act on the idea and start wiring up museums with IR blasters, but the January 2012 patent may still be fresh in a frequently inventive mind like Miyamoto's.

Little did we know that, just two months after we were trying the Wii U for ourselves, Nintendo was busy patenting nearly everything its unique game console would have to offer. A pair of just-published US Patent Office applications filed last August get into the nuts and bolts of how the controller and the legacy Wii remote will play with the new device. It's clear that the patent work had started before Nintendo had redesigned the main system -- the box at the center of the patents looks like the existingWii -- but it does show the nitty-gritty of things we only saw at last year's Nintendo E3 keynote, such as the gun attachment or playing golf with a combination of the Wii U controller and the traditional Wiimote. Nintendo also gave itself some wiggle room on the controller's screen size: although the LCD is officially 6.2 inches across, the patent allows that it might be "5 inches or larger." We're wondering how much of the overall look and technology will survive through to the finished Wii U design's unveiling at this year's E3. For now, though, you can explore the patents yourself at the links below.

The thing about Kid Icarus: Uprising is that, even though it induces carpal-tunnel syndrome, it's just so gosh-darned fun. Developer Project Sora's director Masahiro Sakurai has offered some insight into the control scheme and some tips for a more comfortable gaming experience – beyond "use the stand," that is.
"I think any game needs to provide new experiences and stimulating things to discover, but if we provided run-of-the-mill controls for it, that cuts down on the game's potential," Sakurai told IGN. "If a player used to touchscreen-based aiming played against someone used to right-analog control, the first player would probably dominate. The speed is on a whole different level."
As for the pain in your hand, Sakurai has an easy solution: relax. "If there are players who say that it makes their hand tired, that's because you're applying too much force. Try to relax and work on building a rhythm to your control. Place the pen in the middle of the touchscreen; when you're flicking it, take the pen off the screen as you're sweeping with it, and stop right there. That's the basic idea." So in short, don't press too hard and try to be more elegant in your wrist control – it takes practice.
Oh, and if you're a lefty, just know how lucky you are to be able to play Kid Icarus: Uprising with a Circle Pad Pro – left-handed controls almost didn't make their way into the game. "Considering how close to the limit we pushed the 3DS during development, it's a miracle that we were even able to provide support for left-handed controls at the point of completion. Providing support for independent analog control was something that was technically impossible."

The DS Lite could see society's next great advancement in GPS technology, at least in tourist-heavy areas such as museums and haunted-home expeditions, a patent from Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto suggests.
The patent describes a system where an overhead grid of infrared "positional information transmitters" reads a user's DS to light up floor patterns and potential walkways. The user can then pick which route he'd like to take, reading tourist facts along the way.
Nintendo has already infiltrated the museum scene with the 3DS giving guided tours in the Louvre, and it's doing a pretty great job, from what we hear. There's no guarantee that a patent will translate to an actual product, but the thousands of infrared beams hovering over the Mona Lisa fulfills a few of our own spy fantasies, so we'll hope this one works out in some way.

Kirby's Pinball Land, which as you'll recall was a Game Boy title from the early 90s, has been given a "General" rating by the Australian Classification Board, which is completely unsurprisingly given the game's adorable subject matter. What is surprising, however, is the fact that this game was classified at all, considering the fact that it hasn't really been announced or anything.
It's possible that Kirby's Pinball Land is coming to the eShop in the land down under, but it's also possible that the game could be included in that 20th anniversary collection Nintendo announced last month. Either way, classification is usually a precursor to an official announcement, so we'll keep out eyes peeled for press releases with fluffy pink letterhead.

Ubisoft and Nintendo would doubtless prefer that one of the biggest news stories of the week never happened. The release of gameplay video showing off the forthcoming Rayman Legends apparently running on Wii U revealed some great stuff: superbly animated 2D visuals spliced expertly with polygon 3D elements, topped off nicely with beautiful cartoon animation and some lovely dynamic lighting. Not only that but we also were treated to a preview of one of Wii U's new features: the tablet controller's Near Field Communication (NFC) wireless tech. Some say that it was a canny move by Ubi in generating terrific buzz for a title which performed badly last time around - despite Rayman Origins being an excellent release. Others saw the exciting video as a strategically leaked hors d'oeuvre for the Wii U loveliness to come next month at the E3 games convention. In reality, the combination of pre-production controllers and music lifted from the Back to the Future and How to Train Your Dragon movie soundtracks all but confirms that it was indeed an internal Ubisoft presentation that was never meant to see the light of day.And unfortunately, the gameplay footage we did see gives away very well little about the Wii U's hotly contested "next-gen" credentials, which have dominated headlines recently. Does the Wii U's graphics tech disappoint compared to the Xbox 360? Or, as developers likeGearbox have suggested, does the new hardware allow for improved versions of multi-platform titles? On the face of it, Wii U's capabilities are fairly self-evident. We've seen Nintendo's game demos, we've seen their tech presentations - from a graphics perspective, this is PS3/360 stuff. Perhaps more obviously, it is telling that company has made no effort whatsoever to suggest that Wii U offers next-generation rendering in any of its marketing - something that would surely be a major selling point that the company would want to get across to the core audience. Yet rumours appear suggesting that Wii U will be twice as powerful as Xbox 360.The existing body of evidence suggests it won't be (though this particular claim is somewhat lacking in context - 2x what, exactly?) but there's a strong possibility that individual components could see an impressive boost over what is found in current-gen consoles. Similarly, other elements may fall a little short. There's no reason why both the anonymous briefings on the machine's deficiencies and the on-the-record statements can't be equally true. So what exactly should we expect from this year's next-gen entrant?"Does Wii U graphic tech fall short of the Xbox 360 as rumours have stated? Or can the console exceed current gen performance? In different applications, both situations could be true."
Nintendo doesn't typically talk specs, but the combination of official information released thus far plus a basic knowledge of existing hardware production infrastructure can give us a pretty good idea. Consoles are not built in a vacuum - their parts are fabricated by companies whose facilities and outputs are a matter of public record.Processing power is driven by Moore's Law, which is typically a factor of the amount of transistors you can cram onto a piece of silicon. The current-gen consoles launched at 90nm (a state-of-the-art fabrication process at the time) and have gradually transitioned to 45nm, being refitted into smaller cases in the process. Nintendo has already revealed that its IBM Power7-derived CPU runs at the same fabrication process as the current PS3 and Xbox 360, and the worldwide shortages in "next-gen" 28nm production suggest that the Wii U's AMD Radeon graphics chip will also be produced at 40nm/45nm - it's the only way to create millions of viable chips in time for a 2012 release, and also opens the opportunity for a die-shrunk cheaper unit to be put into production sooner rather than later.Combine the realities of chip production with the miniscule dimensions of the Wii U casing (172mm x 45mm x 267mm according to Nintendo's E3 PR - a bit bigger than a current Wii) and we're looking very much at current gen ballpark power - a true "next-gen" upgrade over the current Xbox would be extremely challenging to cool in a box that's so tiny compared even to the slim versions of the PS3 and 360.Efficiencies in design can make a difference, of course. The Xbox 360 CPU is clocked at 3.2GHz for example, but by Microsoft's own estimates, most games only process around 0.2 instructions per clock - suggesting it's a somewhat poor design that can be improved. GPU design is set to change somewhat going forward with more efficiency in mind (something we've seen with NVIDIA's Kepler tech) but to date, graphics power has been driven very much by Moore's Law, which combined with the rest of the available information suggests that Wii U GPU processing will be very much in the ballpark of the Xbox 360 and PS3.Some have interpreted the "re-introduction" of the Wii U at this year's E3 as a showcase for a revised spec, with insider sources suggesting that more powerful devkits have been dispatched to developers. To put that into perspective, it's worth noting that designing microprocessors as complex as a CPU or GPU is a hugely involved task that can easily take over a year to complete. Even a GPU like the Wii U's - essentially an offshoot of an existing PC-based product - needs to be designed, fabricated and tested.

Images snapped supposedly from Blockbuster UK have surfaced showing what appears to be a third-party title list for Nintendo’s upcoming Wii U console.
Go Nintendo (via Shacknews) reports the list includes several games currently slated for PS3 and Xbox 360, such as Metro: Last Light and Aliens: Colonial Marines.
It’s not just confirmed titles though, unannounced projects including Marvel Super Heroes, Just Dance 4, and Rabbids Party Land; along with ‘Shield Pose’ and ‘Zombie’ (your guess is as good as ours on the last two) are listed as well.
The list seems real, but without Nintendo’s confirmation the info has been stamped with the rumour label. An E3 announcement is a definite possibility, considering that’s where the first word on Wii U’s third party line-up was mentioned nearly a year ago.

Gaming has infiltrated everything around us. It seems that any time a control interface is needed, the first thought to many current hacker’s minds are the familiar controls from the video games we grew up with. In this example, [eljaywasi] needed a way to control the wavelength of light coming out of a laser. We don’t know exactly how he’s actually changing the wavelength, but we do know he’s using an SNES gamepad as his interface. You can see a red and a blue LED located on the front of the pad, so it may be that two buttons would have sufficed. We don’t care, we like the SNES pad better.

Michael Ancel confirms game still in development for next-gen
Ubisoft's Michael Ancel has confirmed that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in production for next-generation tech.
"We won't make promises that we can't keep," he told Toulouse Game (translation by NeoGAF).
"We are in an active creation stage and at this moment we are only focusing on the game and making it the best game that we can."
Ancel would not say what platforms the game was planned for or when it would be released, saying the game would "need some tech" to acheive its ambition.
"We focus on the game. We create it first, then we'll see what can run it," he said.

A third Resident Evil 3DS game is believed to arrive later this year, dubbed Degeneration-Damnation-Downfall.
The first two titles, Degeneration and Damnation, are apparently the names of in-game movies, while Downfall is said to be the title of the game itself.
Nintendo World Report says the news came from an article on Digital Spy which has later been removed.
The game apparently features series mainstay Claire Redfield and is set between Resident Evil 5 and 6.
Capcom has already released two Resident Evil boxed games on Nintendo 3DS – Mercenaries in 2011 and Revelations earlier this year. If the rumour is true, Downfall would be the third.

As he had come himself to the conclusion that a Gamecube loader from a USB device could not be done on Wii because of the very special sharing system RAM in this mode, Crediar proves today otherwise, to support video. The thorny problem of memory MEM2/ARAM, which resulted in the outright abandonment of Dios Mios in favor of his cousin Dios Mios Lite (using only the SD) was bypassed by rewriting the USB module manager and various functions that used the famous memory MEM 2. Crediar says that at present, Dios Mios has exactly the same compatibility as Dios Mios Lite (which turns out to be unee both good and bad news). The big advantage of USB over the SD lies in access times and loading which are greatly improved. The video also reveals that it uses the new bootloader house 100% (0% Nintendo), which allows among others to force 480p mode, including PAL games (which do not, Nintendo has estimated that at the time Europeans were not sufficiently equipped to take advantage). Dios Mios is not yet publicly available, but before the ads that come and go, adding a googlecode to store official sources, the output of this new step forward in the hack of the Wii should not wait too long.
Quote: What can I say, Impossible is nothing and never give up! After looking at DM again I managed to solve the issues by MEM2/ARAM Changing the USB code and Some other stuff to make it work without MEM2. Saami DM Has the compatibility DML have the current version, of course the reads are much faster as you see Cdn Already in this video. Never say never, an adage takes on its meaning. So the competition resumed with renewed vigor, between Mios Dios, Dios Mios Lite and hypothetical Devolution (hugely promising).

A few days ago I received an e-mail from a tiny whale. Well, I have to admit it isn't something I've seen really often. They call her "Peaches the Wale" [sic], and she's a musician who recently composed some MOD tunes on her Commodore Amiga. You can see her in this video.
Now she's been invited to have some concerts around, and she realized it wouldn't be very feasible to drag the Amiga with her... so she found on the Internet the XM/MOD player I wrote for the Nintendo DS using libXM7 library, but she needed some additional features:
- the module should load and be ready for replay, instead of starting immediately
- it should be possible to stop and restart the module from the current pattern
- it should be possible to skip to next or to previous pattern while stopped or even while playing
- the program should visually show the number of the current pattern and the total number of patterns in the module
- the music output should be mono, for her DJ mixer.
I really couldn't refuse giving her my help, so I compiled my player again in a different version with the requested features. I called it XM7dj and of course it's available for everybody who might need it. Download it here. I hope you enjoy!

[source: emu_kidid @ gc-forever.com] Swiss as a bootloader on the Wiikey Fusion can be implemented as two different methods: Skip the IPL, boot directly to Swiss (custom "apploader"). Appear as a disc in the IPL just like the current menu. Currently, I've written (ported from the official flasher) some code to do the flashing and it seems to work well as it's giving me back valid responses but I believe the file I'm flashing may be in the wrong format (layout). This is what I've done so far: I took a known "flash" file and injected my own DOL into it. I then flashed the entire file. The IPL with the wiikey was telling me "Please insert a GC disc" and the Wiikey was generally unresponsive. Luckily the next time I tried to flash, the recovery kicked in and took over, resulting in a working chip again (or I could've just run the official updater again).
Note: These bootloader methods are developed with GameCube in mind as target console, using this impressive hack to load game ISO files from SD card. Thanks goes to emu_kidid for the heads up.

A sequel to recent 3DS release Kid Icarus: Uprising looks incredibly unlikely.
The 3DS game itself is 25 years in the making, with the original release of the NES game dating back to December 1986.
However, after a prolonged development period for Uprising – which was initially presumed to be a 3DS launch title – then game’s lead developer Masahiro Sakurai has told IGN that a sequel is unlikely.
“If by ‘lasting universe’ you mean to ask if there's a sequel, the answer is no,” he confirmed.
“[This is] because we pushed a lot into the game in order to let people have this short yet deep experience, but the novelty of that would likely grow thin in the next game. For now, my thought is that perhaps we'll see someone else besides me make another Kid Icarus in another 25 years.”.

Where Nintendo leads, others often follow.
Sure, the finer points of Virtual Boy, N64 and 3DS pulled in directions others didn’t want to go.
But they are exceptions to the rule. Broadly, when the Kyoto HQ’s bright ideas cause the market to jump, everyone jumps. Platform games, motion control, shoulder buttons, analogue sticks, gaming touch screens… the legacy of ideas Nintendo has put back into the games business is rich.
I think its new approach to digital sales is in the same ilk, and will actually make its partners at retail rich, too.
Read more about it here, but in short: the firm will allow retailers to buy codes for online games wholesale and then mark them up as they see fit, just like physical.
It’s a move to understanding what possible combination exists between physical and digital, it has the potential to solve issues around discovering and marketing digital content, and could redress the balance around download prices.
Other format holders and publishers have tried one or two incremental attempts at this, but really these were just token gestures to either appease retail or experiment.
And in truth, the time to experiment here has run out. It’s do or die time. So Nintendo’s all or nothing approach is refreshing, and if it works will likely be widely copied.

GameBoy Online (2012/05/10) is released. GameBoy Online is a Game Boy and GameBoy Color emulator written in Javascript. It strives to be efficient and try to have a perfect compatibility. Currently the execution speed is not optimal even on browsers. For example on Chrome, which is nevertheless deemed to run Javascript faster on a PC running Windows 7 64-bit version with a double heart 2 CPUs at 2.2 GHz, games run at normal speed but almost skipping some frames.
The sound production is still experimental and rather poor quality. The video portion is by HTML5 or by creating images with BMP string URI. State backups are implemented using the object window.localStorage and are serialized / deserialized JSON. Ditto for backup SRAM.
GameBoy Online Changelog:
- Software scalar update.
- Software scaling lib update.

[Matt Pandina] has been documenting his build of a very nice light painting bar on his G+ page. His light painting bar has 64 RGB LEDs being driven by an ATmega328P and four TLC5940 chips. He wrote his own libraries to talk to the TLC5940 as well as his own libraries to pull images off of a MicroSD card. He also wrote a cross-platform program that automatically converts a directory of pngs to something the TLC5940s expect. He says the secret to getting his24-bit color correction looking right is gamma correction. It seems that when the LEDs were run too bright, he couldn’t get the colors quite right. In case you’re curious, those images are 15 inches tall!
You can follow along through his posts as he starts with just a few LEDs and slowly updates and grows it to the impressive state it is at currently.

The new Marvel film is taking the box office by storm, and Ubisoft is giving gamers the chance to wield their favourite heroes' superpowers.
Marvel Avengers: Battle For Earth is currently in development for Wii U and Kinect and is due for release this Autumn.
However, it will not be based on the smash hit blockbuster movie. Instead, it will follow the events of the Secret Invasion storyline from the comics. Fans will battle an shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls, who have invaded Earth and disguised themselves as Marvel's most iconic heroes.
Ubisoft has promised more than 20 different characters will be featured, including Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor.
The game is being developed by Ubisoft Quebec, the team behind Kinect's superpowered beat 'em up Powerup Heroes. Expect similar gameplay with more than a smattering of Hulk Smash.

Despite never having been released for Wii in North America, the Wii's "New Play Control" version of Pikmin 2 will be released as part of the "Nintendo Selects" line June 10, alongside fellow GameCube port Mario Power Tennis. Rather than question the logistics of a budget re-release of a game that was never released in the first place, we'll celebrate the $19.99 price point under which it's coming out.
Also joining the Nintendo Selects line are two bona fide Wii games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the excellent Donkey Kong Country Returns, at $30 each. It's about (two years past) time for Brawl to be made cheaper, though it's unusual that these two games will sell for $10 above the normal Nintendo Selects price.

Game Gear's isometric Sonic platformer Sonic Labyrinth is headed to the 3DS eShop as a Virtual Console title in Japan.
The game is due to hit the Japanese 3DS eShop on May 16, and although there's no word on a local release those with fond memories of the game should keep their fingers crossed for a release soon.Sonic Labyrinth is an isometric puzzle platformer in which Sega says Robotnik stole Sonic's running shoes - the perfect excuse for the game's rather slow pace.

"We look forward to launching Darksiders [2] beginning on August 14 in North America," announced THQ CEO Brian Farrell during an investor conference call today. Farrell said that the delay from the previous June date was a "demonstration of our commitment to quality" – and that, after discussions with retailers, the publisher determined that "mid-August is a more favorable release window."Pre-orders for Darksiders 2 are more than five times what they were for the first game at the equivalent point before release, Farrell noted. THQ is accompanying this release with double the marketing spend of the first game as well – it needs a hit game, and badly.http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/da...ail-august-14/

The freshly unleashed Peter Molyneux has done what we'd all knew he'd do – stir the hornets' nest.
In an announcement that the famed developer will be offering analysis of next month's E3 on Spike TV, the Lionhead founder and former Microsoft Game Studios Europe boss described Nintendo's upcoming Wii U as “slightly lack lustre”.
Furthermore, he describes both Microsoft and Sony as “holding their breath” regarding next-gen, supporting MCV's belief that both had once planned to present new hardware at E3 only to havechanged their minds.
“Sony and Microsoft are holding their breath on next gen - interesting to see how they pad out another year. Price cuts, form factors?” he said in an email exchange published on Kotaku.
“Nintendo's slightly lack lustre Wii U is going to have to blow us away with better specs and great 1st party line up.”
And as if that weren't enough, he went on to question the very worth of E3 itself.
“Is the biggest news that E3 itself runs the risk of being outdated, or perhaps it already is?” he added. “The real challenge is how the players are going to adapt to the mounting pressure of Facebook, Apple, Social, Cloud, Multi-Gaming.”

Some of the world’s biggest casual games are coming to 3DS and DS, courtesy of UK publisher Licensed 4U.
The company has signed a deal with Big Fish Games to publish its titles, including 13 titles for 3DS this year.
Big Fish’s most popular brands include Hidden Expedition, Mystery Case Files and Jewel Quest, which is a regular in the DS Top 10.
More than 100m Mystery Case Files titles have been downloaded globally to date. The deal starts with Hidden Expedition Titanic on June 15th on DS, with a 3DS version to follow.
“Big Fish Games has a strong track record in sales at retail both throughout Europe and the US, a strong brand awareness and a perception of quality,” said Licensed 4U MD Adam Prichard (pictured).
“We’re hoping for good sell-in figures on all titles. Casual gaming brands don’t come much bigger than Big Fish Games.”

Free-to-play could be the go-to business model for next generation console software on PS4, Next Xbox and Wii U.
That’s the impression given by Ubisoft in its post financials conference call.
A surprising amount of focus was put on the next-generation consoles in the presentation.
It’s interesting to think that publishers may be the ones to force platform holder’s hands this time. Traditionally publishers have been hesitant about the transition to a new wave of machines and, specifically, all the costs associated with that.
But with the console market in free-fall we’re witnessing an unprecedented turning of the tide – now publishers are the ones who want fresh hardware, and their enthusiasm might be the final push needed to finally get Sony and Microsoft to play their secretive decks.
Ubisoft management suggested that next-gen development is now well underway at the company. Indeed, seven launch tiles are planned for Wii U – and so far dev costs on each have been roughly in line with Xbox 360 and PS3 costs. That will be as big a relief as anything.
As well as noting the next-gen’s power increase, Ubisoft also revealed that the internet and connected services will be a bigger feature than ever. The company also noted that both full game digital downloads and – maybe more surprisingly – free-to-play titles will form a central focus of the generation ahead.
Traditional retail and distribution methods will not die out, however, but merely be supplemented by these new options.
“We believe that F2P versions of Wii-U titles are in UbiSoft's plans for the coming year,” Baird Equity Research’s Colin Sebastian noted. “It appears that new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will also allow more integration of item-based transactions within games, including a free-to-play option similar to the model used in social and mobile games.
“UbiSoft expects this to drive better monetization than what is commonly available in the current generation. We believe the F2P model on consoles, as part of a broad multi-platform strategy (phones, tablets, connected TVs) could drive a higher level of profitability per franchise.
“In addition, developers of Facebook and Mobile/Tablet games may discover a new platform opportunity for their titles in the next console generation.”

Add a fourth company to the group contributing to Project X Zone – Nintendo. At least, it's a Nintendo-owned developer creating the 3DS Capcom/Namco/Sega crossover SRPG. Monolith Soft, most recently known forXenoblade Chronicles, is developing the new game, Famitsu has revealed (viaAndriasang).
It makes sense given Monolith's history – it developed Namco X Capcom, a similar crossover game for PS2. What doesn't make sense, at least at face value, is a Nintendo-owned company making a game about three other companies' characters.

There's no better way to flaunt your mastery of the art of having $55 than with the Kingdom Hearts 3D "Mark of Mastery" edition. The newly announced special edition comes with a clear 3DS case and a set of art cards that look like they can be slipped into said case, and five AR cards to unlock in-game Dream Eaters. All of this comes in a big box with a magnetic clasp.
This edition shows one of the advantages of portable games: the limited edition boxes don't cost quite as much as those for console games.

We certainly didn't expect a 3DS spinoff of Lost Planet ... and we definitely didn't expect a 3DS-slash-PS3 spinoff. EX Troopers, revealed in this week's Famitsu magazine, is also unexpectedly anime styled, featuring manga panel cutscenes and a theme by Jpop star May'n.
EX Troopers takes place on EDN-3rd, in some kind of academy. Bren Turner is new in school, and seems to jump right into the Akrid fighting in what producer Shintaro Kojima describes as a beginners' action shooter.
No official images have been released yet (above is Lost Planet 3), but expect to see a lot of this, as Capcom indicated plans to use this IP outside of games, like its other "Single Content Multiple Usage" initiatives.

Along with a 3DS firmware update (which doesn't do anything interesting), a new patch sent to 3DSes yesterday closes up the , in Mario Kart 7. The patch is required for online play, so you will no longer see miraculous leaps forward on that particular course. The glitch still shows up intime trials.
Now you have only your own driving skill to rely on in Mario Kart. Well, that and blue shells. Actually, mostly blue shells. Now, you have only the random chance that you'll get a blue shell and not be hit by a blue shell to rely on.

New screenshots released today introduce the new starting point in Pokemon Black Version 2 and White Version 2. Aspertia City is a location new to the series, though of course "new" is relative in the world of Pokemon. From that location, you'll begin your investigation of how the Unova setting has changed since the events of two years ago. And you'll catch lots of Pokemon and fight gym leaders and stuff.
Nintendo also sent out the new box arts, allowing you to see Black Kyurem and White Kyurem facing each other down just as they will on retail shelves. Unless they're shelved in a different order, in which case they'll be defiantly facing away from each other.

Which would you be more likely to walk into a store and ask for? Something called "WWE 12" or something called "WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011?" THQ reports that common sense has won out, as it attributes increased sales of the new title, in part, to the new naming convention.
"The successful rebranding of this annual franchise has led to higher sell-through to date," the company notes in its latest earnings release, "which is up approximately 20 percent on like-for-like platforms in North America versus the year-ago title." THQ didn't share the sell-through number, but it did disclose that it shipped more than 2.2 million copies since November. It sounds like a much more successful rebranding than "Hollywood Hogan."

Usually when a game glitches the result is a mess of pixels or polygons. We tend to see hands going through walls, characters falling through the scenery, or weird shortcuts that the developers didn’t intend. On a very rare occasion though, the cosmos will align and the perfect storm will form – a glitch that, by complete accident, looks incredibly wrong. One such example is the Donkey Kong Country monkey-humping glitch. That’s right, you heard us.We’ve been sitting on this little gem for a while now, and now it’s time to introduce it to the masses. There is a glitch in Donkey Kong Country that makes it look like Donkey Kong is doing something very nasty to another gorilla. It should go without saying that we don’t recommend you watch our video if you’re a bit on the young side, because we don’t want angry phone calls from your parents asking why Little Jimmy is watching emotional animal erotica.First have a watch of the video, and then we’ll explain how it works:

Another Wii U game has been confirmed ahead of the E3 2012 conference. Yes, Ben 10: Omniverse Wii U is coming to Nintendo's new console as well as Wii, DS and 3DS.
Ben 10: Omniverse for Wii U is based in the forthcoming cartoon series that will be aired on Cartoon Network. Ben has a new look for this action brawler and he's joined by a new sidekick called Rook, a skilled but inexperienced Plumber graduate who is armed with a Proto-Tool, a high-tech multifunction weapon designed to battle evil.
Just like in the cartoons, you'll be able to switch forms and battle as one of 13 playable alien heroes in a bid to defeat the evil plans of a fierce villain, intent on destroying the world. New alien forms include Bloxx and Gravattack.
You'll be able to play with a friend in two-player co-op mode on the Wii U and Wii with one player taking charge of Ben and his alien forms and the other in control of Rook. However, this co-op mode won't appear in the DS and 3DS versions of the game.

Mind Candy to offer 'new take' on smash-hit DS title
UK studio Mind Candy is developing a sequel to its hit DS title Moshi Monsters: Moshling Zoo.
As reported by MCV, the title will be a "new take" on the franchise, which has usurped Nintendo’s popular Brain Training as the longest chart topping DS game ever, currently stretching to 18 consecutive weeks.
The sequel is slated to be released later this year.
“We are extremely passionate about increasing the brand experience in as many ways as possible,” said Mind Candy marketing manager Andrew Matjaszek.
“[The sequel] offers a completely new take on the Moshi universe. We focus on the key characters in a similar way to Moshling Zoo. However, players will once again experience new locations, new characters and loads of new games to enjoy.”

Let's say you liked adding GPS to your Nintendo DS. How about adding a Nintendo DS to your GPS?Toyota is trying just that through a new Smart Navi GPS unit in its Estima Hybrid minivan that will let passengers control the mapping system. Load up the Bluetooth-equipped Kuruma de DS cartridge and you can enter directions from the back seat instead of waiting for the driver's next chance at a red light. The automaker is also hoping to cut the "are we there yet?" levels of ennui to a minimum by providing trivia questions, hand-drawn map notes and a surfeit of tourist info. Mii characters speak out text information, and you can even use the car as a speaker system in the event your Starfox game needs that much more audio immersion. Estima buyers can get the new Smart Navi and Kuruma de DS in Japan on June 1st, although the $2,586 equivalent price for the GPS, the $92 cartridge and the cost of the Nintendo console itself might be too rich when you don't need a navigator to tell you that the princess is in another castle.

[Parker] emailed us today to show off his latest NES portable build. This time he’s using the standard “top loader” NES instead of the typically used NES on a chip. This is pretty cool since the NES on a chip has compatibility issues with some games. For the screen, he uses a common PSone screen with a slight power modification. From the factory, the screen takes 7.4 V and converts it down to 5V to use. He removed this and ran it directly from his own 5V power source. It may not seem like that big of a deal, but with portables, every bit counts. He also ditched the sound amplifier from the PSone screen in favor of something a little more efficient. He seems to have done a pretty good job because he says it gets roughly 10 hours at full volume right now.
Another cool aspect of this deign is that the cartridge serves as a sort of stand for the unit, although the button placement looks like it might be a tiny bit awkward when used this way.

Excited for Nintendo's new tablet-esque controller? So are the kids in TT Games' QA department. An over-excited tester tweeted out an image of a slightly different Wii U slab than the one we laid hands onat E3 2011, teasing "look we what we have at work!" Answering the call does indeed reveal something worth looking at -- a somewhat wider looking Wii U slate featuring two full-sized analog sticks (as opposed to 3DS-like circle pads), a pair of unmarked button-like squares, and a new starboard home for the controller's plus and minus buttons.
The tweet was summarily pulled, of course, but not before our friends at Joystiq nabbed a screenshot. Naturally, the rumor mill started right up, churning out speculation of developer specific slabs, early prototypes and late redesigns. The truth? We'll probably need to wait until E3 to find out, but we reached out to Nintendo for a comment all the same. We'll let you know if we hear anything more thanthe usual "Nintendo doesn't comment on rumors and speculation" line.

Think the Wii has the market cornered on gaming rehab? Think again -- neuroscientists at Newcastle University are developing a series of motion controlled video games to make stroke rehab more fun and accessible. The team's first title, dubbed Circus Challenge, lets patients digitally throw pies, tame lions and juggle to help them build strength and regain motor skills. As players progress, the game ratchets up its difficulty, presumably to match pace with their recovery.
Although Limbs Alive, the game's publisher, has only described their motion controller as "next-generation," it affirms that the game will be playable on PCs, laptops and tablets later this year. In an effort to lower costs and provide at-home therapy, the team hopes to leverage a £1.5 million award from the UK's Health Innovation Challenge Fund to build a system that will allow therapists to monitor patient progress remotely. The whole enchilada still needs some time to bake, but you can hit the break for a video and the full press release.

An animated trailer showcasing the plot of the upcoming Pokemon Black and White Version 2 games was released on the official Pokemon website, and features the return of the villainous N and Team Plasma. Though the website notes that the video is not intended to be used during the games, the Japanese trailer sheds a little light on the characters involved in the DS sequels.
In addition to the familiar foes, it seems players can expect to see friends-of-the-hero Bianca and Cheren. The games are due out on June 23 in Japan and will launch some time in the fall in North America.

A patent filed by Nintendo in October of last year has just surfaced online, suggesting a neat feature for the Wii U. The patent outlines a feature in which the player can use the Wiimote to grab things from the television and transport them over to the Wii U tablet.
In the example provided, the player is under attack from a UFO and uses the Wiimote to move a character from the TV to the safety of the tablet. Sounds like an interesting feature, though we're not looking forward to taking a bath in radioactive liquid so we can grow that extra arm to use all this stuff.

We don't know much about the next Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, but we know it's in the works.
A new Smash Bros was first confirmed in at E3 last year, where Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told E3 attendees that because the Sora development team was so involved in Kid Icarus: Uprising. Read between the lines and he's essentially admitted they haven't got a clue what the game will entail and desperately needed something to keep the hardcore Ninty fans from rioting.
Sakurai later admitted 'shouldn't have been publicly announced' because development hasn't even started and won't do until Kid Icarus Uprising is complete. Now that franchise creator Masahiro Sakurai has kicked Kid Icarus: Uprising out the door and said he's not interested in sequel he's likely turning his attention to Nintendo's all-star brawler.
So, we thought we'd pitch in with a few of our own ideas in the hopes of speeding the development process up, and because Nintendo we know Nintendo will definitely read this and definitely listen to everything we have to say....
[h=4]IDENTITY[/h]Smash Bros, by its very nature, is a bit of a hodge-podge of all things Nintendo. For many this mish-mashing of content is what attracts them to the series, but in recent years the charm has started to wear a bit thin.Maybe it's because we're old and cynical but these days we're having trouble ignoring the fact that Nintendo is essentially just dumping a buttload of assets into one place and then retooling it all to accommodate four characters beating the snot out of each other.
It's undeniably awesome, but we think it could be so much better if Nintendo put in the time and effort to create a uniform aesthetic and re-imagine all the characters for the next game. We're a little bit bored of seeing the same Mario, Link and Captain Falcon model, albeit with better textures. We'd rather see a whole new take on Hyrule Temple, instead of the same one dusted off and cleaned up yet again.
Characters like Toon Link and Mr. Game and Watch, which have their own unique visual style will certainly be tricky to reinvent but we have faith in Nintendo et al.

[h=2]TT Games employee tweets image of revised tablet design, featuring proper analogue sticks.[/h]
A member of staff at Maidenhead studio TT Games has tweeted an image of what appears to be a redesigned tablet controller forNintendo's upcoming home console, Wii U.
The image, which has since been deleted but not before our vigilant friends at Nintendo Gamer took a screenshot, shows a broadly similar design to that unveiled alongside the console at E3 last year, with one major difference: the analogue controls, which were originally modelled on the 3DS circle pad, have been replaced with proper analogue sticks.
The start and select buttons have been moved from under the screen to its right hand side, and the grey cable connected to the top of the controller closely resembles a 3DS AC adaptor. There are two new square buttons, too: one under the d-pad, and the other in between the power button and battery light.
There's no suggestion that this is the final version of the controller - that, and the final hardware, will be revealed at E3 next month - but the inclusion of analogue sticks in particular suggests that either Nintendo or its licensed developers weren't entirely happy with the original design, pictured below.
In January, Street Fighter series producer Yoshinori Ono said that the Wii U unveiled at last year's E3 was far from the finished article, saying the console had evolved since its unveiling and had "many unique possibilities". Nintendo has been known to be working on improving the console for some time, with reports last year claiming it was working on support for multiple tablet controllers, as well as improving RAM and processor speed.

Nintendo’s E3 presentation will be broadcast on television channels and web services, the company announced today.
Nintendo is offering what they’re describing as an ‘All-Access Presentation’ of next month’s press conference on Spike TV, MTV2, Youtube, Facebook, Twiter, and through e3.nintendo.com.
"We don't want anyone to miss the energy and excitement of this year's E3 Expo," Nintendo of America's vice president of Corporate Affairs Cindy Gordon explained. "By offering different ways to tune in and follow all the Nintendo news, we aim to make fans all over the world feel like they're right there with us at the show."
Both Microsoft and Sony previously confirmed broadcasting of various forms for their own respective press conferences.
The Nintendo press event (which we highly expect to be Wii-U focused) will kick-off Tuesday, June 5th at 9 AM Pacific.

With E3 2012 right around the corner, Reggie and co. want to make sure your oft-distracted eyes catch every drip drop of the impending Wii U news flood. Much like it did last year, Nintendo's yet again taking to media outlets old and new for coverage of its All-Access Presentation, scheduled for June 5th at 9AM PST, that should prove an unavoidable must-see for any gamer bred on the house that Mario built. Whether you take your news via flat-screen or monitor, the gaming giant's got a solution to sate your preferred means of consumption, making its press conference available ad-free on Spike TV and MTV2, or online with a Facebook-hosted live stream. Of course, you can always set your browser to the Big N's own dedicated site on the big day to keep abreast of its next planned dive into the deep Blue Ocean. Check out the presser after the break for all the necessary informational bits.

The Super Famicom Classic Controller for Wii remains out of reach for everyone but Japanese Club Nintendo members (and eBay users, of course), but ThinkGeek is stocking a very close facsimile for $20.
In fact, the Classic Super Famicom Controller for Wii is functionally identical to the Club Nintendo version. It plugs into your Wii Remote and lets you play Virtual Console games (or anything else that supports Classic Controller use and doesn't require analog sticks) with a controller designed to replicate the SNES pad. It even has the colorful face buttons of the Japanese controller.
Right now seems like a questionable time to buy a Wii accessory, but you'd already be using it to play old games. The impending obsolescence of the Wii isn't necessarily a deal breaker. Besides, the Wii U uses Wii Remotes; a Classic Controller might come in handy with that as well.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will launch on Wii U, PlayStation 3, Vita and Xbox 360, according to a new report.Paul Gale, he who first reported on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, also offered more information on the leaked Nintendo 3DS game Castlevania: Mirror of Fate.Mirror of Fate is a 2D Castlevania game that has been in development for a year-and-a-half, and features two playable characters and co-op play. It uses the 3DS' forward-facing camera as a mirror and the outward facing camera for puzzle solving.Apparently a Wii U version, which interacted with the 3DS version, was in the works before Konami ditched it in favour of a Wii U version of Lords of Shadow 2.The Wii U version of Mirror of Fate would have been the same game as the 3DS version, with the tablet controller's touch screen acting as the bottom 3DS screen and your telly acting as the 3DS' top screen. You were able to use the Wii U's forward facing camera as a mirror to "capture your reflection and reveal your fate".Now, though, Wii U owners will have to settle for a "safer" port of Lords of Shadow 2, which could retain some of the planned connectivity with Mirror of Fate. Both games are being made by Spanish developer MercurySteam and will be unveiled at E3 next month.

3DS sold 950,000 units in its first 61 weeks on sale in the UK, while PS Vitasold just 100,000 in its first ten 10 weeks of availability.
That's according to Pocket Gamer, which cites data from recent weekly Gfk Chart-Track reports, which it says were obtained from a source. The site reports that 3DS will reach one million sales early next month, taking roughly three months longer than its predecessor did to hit the milestone. DS reached one million UK sales in just 51 weeks.
Gfk Chart-Track's business group director Dorian Bloch noted that the difference in price of the systems was an important factor - Nintendo's older handheld was sold at an average price of just £98 in its first ten weeks, versus £202 for 3DS, although the newer system now retails for around £140 following a price cut last August.
PocketGamer also reports that the original PSP had sold 350,000 units after ten weeks on sale, 3.5 times as many as Vita achieved during the same period.
Chart-Track's Bloch noted that the average Vita cost £232 in the system's first ten weeks on sale, versus £178 for the average PSP, adding: "[PS Vita] was launched at a traditionally quiet time, and [PSP] was launched in the build-up to Q4."

Here’s the smallest GameCube we’ve seen, straight from the fruitful workbench of [lyberty5] over on the ModRetro forums. Even though we’ve seen disc-less GameCubes before, [lyberty5] puts this project together so well it wouldn’t look out-of-place in the Nintendo product lineup.
Unlike most of the other portable GameCubes we’ve seen, [lyberty5]‘s build doesn’t have a disk drive. The games are loaded off an SD card with the help of a Wiikey Fusion, a small FPGA’d device that replaces the CD drive in GameCubes and Wiis with an SD card.
The enclosure was constructed out of vacuum formed plastic with the always popular ‘dremeling and bondoing a controller for proper button placement’ method. Inside the enclosure is the hacked up GameCube, a 3.5 inch screen capable of displaying NTSC video at 640×480 resolution and enough battery power to get two or three hours of playtime from a single charge.
After the break you can check out [lyberty5] fast-paced demo video that really sets the bar for portablized console presentation.

Spain to award Shigeru Miyamoto Prince of Asturias Award for his work in gaming
Organizers for the annual Prince of Asturias Awards have bestowed recognition to an unlikely recipient for works in scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanistic works: Nintendo designer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. Miyamoto has been recognized for his creation of several of the most well recognized characters in gaming as well as mainstream culture. His award will be in the "Communications and Humanities" category.
The award, which has been earned by such organizations as CNN and Google, as well as author Umberto Eco, is celebrating Miyamoto's commitment to game creation with a family and creative twist. The Awards organizers recognized that games such as Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong have been designed not simply to create a positive gaming environment, but that Miyamoto was "the main architect of the revolution in teaching, educational and constructive video games."
For his contribution to gaming and the world abroad, Miyamoto will receive a diploma with the Prince of Asturias Foundation's coat of arms, as well as a sculpture and cash prize of €50,000 ($63,215).

Nintendo hits major milestone with 3DS sales figures
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]www.nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo's 3DS continues to post up big numbers, and according to Famitsu the 3DS has finally surpassed 6 million units sold in Japan. Nintendo has been on a sales spree lately, thanks in part to some proper titles for the 3D handheld device.
A rousing sales drive for holiday 2011 and consumers rejecting the PS Vita (especially in Japan) means that Nintendo's launch gaffes have been all but forgotten.
Officially putting the tally at 6,017,206 units, Nintendo in Japan is not the only one making headway. Sales for the device in the UK are also about to reach a milestone, as Nintendo believes the device will finally surpass 1 million units next month.
3DS has sold over 17 million worldwide; by contrast, the global sales total for Vita thus far stands at a mere 1.8 million.

The graphics of the Wii U version of Darksiders 2 are "at least as good" as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions', developer Vigil has said.Game companies and developers are under strict orders not to discuss the Wii U in detail publicly, a directive that has led to speculation about the horsepower of Nintendo's Wi successor. Indeed one report from earlier this year claimed the Wii U was "not as capable" as the PS3 and Xbox 360.But with final developer kits now with engineers, and Nintendo just two weeks away from unveiling the final version of the hardware at E3, Vigil has insisted Wii U owners will see visual parity when it comes to multiplatform games."The visuals will be the same," associate producer Jay Fitzloff told Eurogamer. "It's still a work in progress. But I know, at least as good is the way to say it."In July last Vigil told Eurogamer it spent just five weeks in the run up to E3 2011 creating a working version of the action adventure game on Wii U. Then, Vigil said the Wii U had "plenty of horsepower", "so we're not going to have to make any visual concessions at all".At that time developers were working off of second generation Wii U dev kits - early versions of the console - and its horsepower was in flux. Then, game director Marvin Donald said, "If the Wii U turns out to be this ridiculously powerful machine, we will probably make changes to our budget and scope to take advantage of that." This hasn't happened."[Getting Darksiders 2 working on Wii U] is not as challenging as you might think," Fitzloff said. "Getting it working was not any issue on the Wii U. It's just the control scheme. It's new territory. It's a new frontier. The Wii, after a while, there's a lot you could have done with the Wii controls, but everybody kind of got into a groove, and it became, here's how you handle this or here's how you handle this. Now it's the wild frontier. There's no set system. You've got to think outside the box because there's no precedent."It's not getting the game working on the system. It's getting a cool control system that feels correct. And that's where we're at now."Vigil was even able to quickly get Darksiders 2 running with the Wii U controller, which can stream gameplay from the console."When we first got it up and running, you can have the game download to and run on the pad, and everybody was like, that could take a while, little worried," Fitzloff explained. "It took a programmer two lines of code and five minutes. Working with it is not difficult."Darksiders 2 will use the Wii U controller in obvious ways - for inventory and map use - but the impact of these "no brainers" on gameplay is, according to Fitzloff, huge."Any game would have their inventory on the controller screen," he said. "But even that little simple thing is a big difference because you never have to stop the game on the main screen. That will change people's perceptions because you've never had a game where you didn't have to."They take you out [of the experience], whereas this just goes."He added: "And you're talking about the low hanging fruit. You're talking about the easy stuff. The rest of it is where the challenge comes in. What do we do beyond that that makes it feel natural and integral?"One developer working on Wii U, who wished to remain anonymous, told Eurogamer Wii U ports will at best look as good as PS3 and Xbox 360 games. However, he indicated gamers will only see its true graphics capabilities with games built from the ground up for Wii U later in its life cycle. For its part, Nintendo has said its focus with the Wii U is gameplay, not graphics. "We do not focus on technology specs," Nintendo said in March of this year. "We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers."

Quake Rev PAK is a collection of gaming engines, related to the Quakeseries of games by id Software, modified to run on the Nintendo Wii, using the popular devkitPPC toolchain for homebrew development.
Release 4 is out!
Relevant changes include:
- New GX-accelerated builds of Q2Rev and Q2CTFRev.
- Support for the official Quake and Quake II Mission Packs, now available in the Quake Rev PAK launcher.
- Lots of bug fixes, including an embarrasing one where left & right sound channels were inverted (oops!)
- Fixed a problem with Quake II savegame files, which were not compatible between releases. Starting from Release 4, all new savegame files will work as expected.
- Also starting from this release, it will be required that the game data folders be located inside folders called "Q1" and "Q2" at the engines folder level. This will help having Quake and Quake II data separated, and thus be able to play the "rogue" Mission Packs (Dissolution of Eternity, Ground Zero).
NOTICE: The config.cfg data generated by previous releases of the Q2Rev and Q2CTFRev engines might contain invalid data. It is recommended that you delete them before playing the Quake II games. The engines will recreate the config.cfg files when they are not found.

Nintendo is deploying a new update for its 3DS, probably to assert once again the struggle against the linkers.
The only new significant and that it is no longer necessary to dial the code to perform a parental update , one wonders why ...
We can therefore say that you wait and wait several returns before this update.

This latest version of Pocket Commander has a battlefield 800 percent larger than the original! It also features single click group selection, bigger armies (with hundreds of robots on the battlefield at once!), Launch Probes to see hidden enemies or updated missiles with a more devastating punch and larger damage zone.
Like the original this game was inspired by the 1988 game by Dan Bunten called Modem Wars.

png2gba is a python script, that generates header data for gba sprites, similar to pcx2gba.
I wrote this, because pcx2gba isnt available for GNU/Linux. In addition png2gba can convert more then one file at once, so nobody has to stumble upon palette issues. Im afraid there is no support for transparency at the moment, but it will be available soon.

We are going thru all our e-mails that we have received the past 2 years, and checking all the links on the site etc., to try to make sure we are completely updated.
Over these 2 years, a handful of people have mailed asking about a download for Dragon BASIC 1.4.5. Unfortunately many websites of GBA developers have disappeared over the last few years, including the one for Dragon BASIC.
We have therefore tracked down a copy of the original file and are now hosting it right here on gbadev.org! Click here to download it!

A static Japanese hardware chart means the Nintendo 3DS is still the country's top-selling console, with sales falling by just 673 units.
Last week's Media Create figures saw a sales slump for Japan following the holiday period, and sales numbers continued to fall for all hardware, except the Vita, which managed to sell just seven more units than last week to stay in fourth, and the Nintendo DSi at 9, which went from 387 sales last week to 425.
- Nintendo 3DS - 45,752
- PlayStation 3 - 12,026
- PSP - 10,652
- PlayStation Vita - 6,347
- Nintendo Wii - 5,956
- PlayStation 2 - 1,166
- Microsoft Xbox 360 - 825
- Nintendo DSi XL - 683
- Nintendo DSi - 425
In the software chart a new entry with an improbable name, My Little Sister Can't Possibly Be This Cute Portable Can't Possibly Continue, went straight to number 1 with 53,175 sales. Elsewhere in the top 5 new entries Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and Brothers Conflict Passion Pink entered at 3 and 5 respectively.

One of the really cool things about the Nintendo Wii when it was first introduced was the ability to play GameCube games on it. This made it a no-brainer for a lot of folks to upgrade. But as the heyday of legacy systems fades into history, Nintendo decided this was no longer a selling point and stopped populating those components. The good new is, if you don’t mind a lot of PCB soldering you can add your GameCube bits to a modern Wii motherboard.
[Deadlyfoez] launched a raffle to raise enough money to buy a new version of the hardware (we guess the raffle prize is the modded console). He then proceeded to solder on four GameCube controller ports and a memory card reader. There are also a number of passive surface mount components that need to be added. But as the video after the break shows, once in place the functionality reappears on the software side.

An incredible high score challenge has just been started by Benjamin Stevens, who is offering to give away the two rarest released Virtual Boy games, Virtual Bowling and SD Gundam Dimension War for free to whoever beats his high scores! That's collector's gems worth about $2,000! Here are the two options for you to win the challenge:
1. Obtain higher scores than Ben (or tie his high scores) in 30 different modes across all the officially released Virtual Boy games.
2. Obtain higher scores than Ben (or tie his high scores) in 20 different modes across the officially released Virtual Boy games, but no scores may be obtained in 3D Tetris.
All scores must be submitted to this site using the site rules; therefore, all high scores must be gotten on a real Virtual Boy without using cheats, so no scores from an emulator will be accepted. In addition, you must supply a screenshot for each high score as proof, so that you obtain gamer points on this site for each score.
The first person to meet the above criteria will be the lucky winner of both a complete copy of Virtual Bowling in very good condition (just a little rough around the edges on the box) as well as a complete copy of SD Gundam Dimension War in even better condition!
Until this challenge comes to its conclusion, Ben won't be posting any more high scores. Thus, any scores posted in a mode, for which he has no high score posted at all, automatically count towards the goal of 30 or 20. Also, those who already have higher scores than him in particular modes already have a head start towards the goal.
You can find additional information in Ben's original posting here.
Highscores can be viewed, submitted and tracked in the games section. A list of all of Ben's scores to beat can be found in his profile. In the extended part of this news, you can also find a list of all modes, for which highscores can be submitted.
Happy high score hunting!

jskyboo is now available a new version of its multi-utility functions (remember that variation of the old homebrew "dop-ios") dedicated to the Wii. It has functions similar to what is can be found separately in various applications (in parenthesis) and notably allows to install / uninstall / patch the IOS (dop-mii) install WAD files (wad manager), uninstall any file type of NAND (any title deleter) , change area (any area change), dump the strings as WAD (bluedump), etc.. News / Corrections - Correction of the "AutoLoadIos" - warning during the patching of IOS70 or 80 with a key Korean non-Korean on a console (error 003) - add option "DisableControllerButtonHold" which disables interaction with the menus if you maintain a button - cleaning sources managing wiimotes - fixed USB mode (always capricious, DisableSetAHBPROT = AutoLoadIOS a = 0) - 26 and compiled with devkitPPC libogc 1.8.11.1 NOTE: The fact that it is now built with the latest version of the libogc assures full compatibility with the new wiimotes (produced from approximately November 2011) . A bunch of new Castlevania games are on the way, one of them a 3DS exclusive title called Mirror of Fate. For now, however, the details remain scarce.
Update: apparently Konami asked N1ntendo.nl to take down the article in which this information was leaked for a bit of damage control, so you can't read it there anymore. We'll keep it up over here, though.
Details
- Castlevania Lords of Shadow sequel in the works
- heading to PS3, Xbox 360, Vita, and Wii U
- Wii U/3DS Castlevania titles will interact somehow
- Mirror of Fate will feature co-op play
- Mirror of Fate will also be a 2-D sidescrolling game

If you have an interest in studying Japanese literature, then Aozora Bunko NDS could prove to be a useful application for you. The Aozora Bunko collection encompasses thousands of works of Japanese-language fiction and non-fiction. These include out-of-copyright books or works that the authors wish to make freely available. Everything is in Japanese, including the interface and menus, so this definitely wont be for everyone. More information including source code and tools can be found at MeRAMAN's website

Fceux SVN r2516 is compiled. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.
Fceux SVN changelog:
r2516
* Taseditor: Ctrl+Space accelerator = toggle "Auto-restore last position" checkbox
* Taseditor: remapped "Restore Playback" hotkey to Spacebar
* Taseditor: "Restore Playback" also pauses seeking
* Taseditor: mid-click = "Restore Playback" when possible

Nintendo's next generation console will not receive support from Epic's upcoming tech
Nintendo’s next generation console will not be supported by the upcoming Unreal Engine 4, it has been revealed.
UE4 is the next-generation of Epic’s very popular development engine. Its incompatibility with Wii U effectively locks Nintendo’s machine out of a wealth of third party multiplatform content.
The confirmation came from SpikeTV host Geoff Keighley, who said on Twitter that Epic’s Mike Capps confirmed the news at GDC in March.
Wii U will, however, be supported by the currently common Unreal Engine 3. But if UE4 gains the same popularity as UE3, Nintendo’s platform could once again struggle to court the same level of third party support and Microsoft and Sony’s machines.

Over half of Professor Layton gamers are female – a much higher profile than seen for the average game.
This week we take a look at the GameVision Brand Map for Professor Layton. GameVision asked 6,729 gamers about this brand. 1,400 had played it within the last six months and 578 of these spoke about the brand in detail.
The popularity of the Professor Layton brand is driven by the ‘mental challenge’ it offers, with 75 per cent of gamers saying this was their most preferred game aspect, more than double the percentage of any other motivator. The level of ‘involvement in the story’ was enjoyed by 37 per cent, while ‘mastering the tricks and skills’ and ‘short play periods’ were each enjoyed by 27 and 22 per cent of players respectively.
Professor Layton is one of few game franchises to have more female players than males. Play rates are highest amongst Spanish and French users, with 20 per cent playing in each country. 46 per cent of players in Europe are under the age of 20, the same as the average game.
Females aged 10 to 14 make up the largest market, accounting for 17 per cent of Professor Layton players, with males aged 15 to 19 comprising a further 14 per cent of the market. No male age group has a higher percentage of players compared to the average game.
The most played games amongst Professor Layton fans include Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training (58 per cent), Big Brain Academy (44 per cent) and Wii Fit (42 per cent), suggesting that a large number of players are playing these games mainly for the educational benefits offered.

"Nintendo has the most to lose or gain this E3. Their backs are against the wall," says Jesse Divnich.
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]www.nintendo-europe.com
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
In this analyst roundtable (following our look atMicrosoft and Sony at E3), we examine what is arguably the most important of the three E3 press conferences: Nintendo. The house that Mario built is no doubt going to do its best to steal the show. Everyone is eager to see what Wii U will really be like.
Nintendo is facing intense scrutiny and has numerous questions to answer, and even with E3 the company may choose to deliberately not answer them all. Will Mario and Zelda both grace Wii U's launch? How much will Wii U cost? Can Nintendo strike a balance to retain its casual Wii audience while also attracting the core Xbox/PlayStation demographic?
It's going to be a very interesting E3 for Nintendo. Here's what the analysts had to say:
Jesse Divnich, EEDAR
Nintendo has the most to lose or gain this E3. Their backs are against the wall as their hardware numbers have fallen below expectations in recent quarters--but it is a position they've been in before and I'd argue some of their best decisions came while under pressure.
"Nintendo needs to demonstrate how Wii U will change gaming in a way that other systems cannot"
Billy Pidgeon
Nintendo is likely to put a big focus on all the third-party partnerships they have obtained for their Wii U line-up. My only concern with Nintendo at E3 is that they might cater too much to the core audience by announcing/showcasing a plethora of HD ports that are already in development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. I think going head-to-head with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is a bad proposition. Nintendo has succeeded on their ability to go against the grain and create demand where there wasn't any before.
And yes, I am more than positive that any HD Wii U port will each have Wii U specific features, but I don't foresee any of them being able to sway gamers who are already entrenched in these franchises on other consoles (Darksiders, Ghost Recon, Assassin's Creed, etc).
I am sure Nintendo will give us the usual Nintendo IP love with numerous Mario and Zelda trailers, which the fans will eat up. Personally, I would prefer that Nintendo focus on why the Wii U can offer a superior differentiating entertainment experience.

If you'd like to play doubles in Mario Tennis Open with someone who looks vaguely like a tennis ball in hue, we can help with that. Nintendo shared the above QR code exclusively with Joystiq, and now we're sharing it with you. From within the 3DS game, you can snap a picture of this code and unlock a yellow Yoshi for your game.
We hope you love it! Get it – because "love" is a tennis term ... but wait, "love" is bad in tennis. We're going to have to think about this joke and get back to you. Anyway, here's that Yoshi.

Metro: Last Light is not in development for Wii U, THQ global brand manager Mark Madsen told Digital Spy.
Last Light was included in a Nintendo promo reel for the Wii U at E3 last year, a move Madsen said wasn't premature. "No I don't think it was a bit too early [to show the game at E3]," he said. "As we got along in the development process, we just really wanted to focus on what we knew, focus on PS3, 360 and PC."
Last Light may not hit Wii U, but if it does "it won't sim-ship with the other SKUs." At the moment THQ and developer 4A Games are unsure about "what we can do to maximise the code for the Wii U," Madsen said.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is coming to the 3DS from Spanish developer Mercury Steam. Nintendo waspreviously rumored to announce a new Castlevania title at E3 next week, but the June 2012 issue of Nintendo Power proved the might of print and outed the title in a cover story.
Details as divulged by GoNintendo read as follows: The story involves Trevor Belmont and he fights mainly with a Combat Cross; secondary weapons include a boomerang-like glaive and an electric bomb; the game has light and shadow magic.
In an ultra-exclusive, super-surprising reveal, Nintendo Power says Mirror of Fate will also include skeletons, it appears.

On the 15th anniversary year of the North American debut of Harvest Moon, Natsume will introduce a new 3DS edition of the farming game with features never seen before – you know, to keep the vegetation from growing stale.
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning puts an emphasis on customization, allowing you to build your own character, buy and design furniture for your house, decorate the nearby village, and move stuff on your farm around ... which can't be good for the crops.
In A New Beginning, you start a farm up around Echo Village to revitalize the town and bring people and animals back. It'll be out this year, and will be shown off as part of Natsume's Harvest Moon celebration at E3.

A new chapter in the chronicles of troubled hard man Sam Fisher will be revealed by Ubisoft at E3, rumours would have us believe.
It will be called Splinter Cell: Black List, IGN reports, and is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U in January 2013.
Although a new Splinter Cell game has never been officially announced, such a title has reportedly been in the works for some time with development being headed by Ubisoft’s Jade Raymond
The talk suggests that the somewhat weather-worn, aged Sam Fisher seen in Splinter Cell: Conviction is long gone, having been replaced with a leaner, fully-suited and night-goggle version of Sam more akin to earlier games.
Despite that, the site also reckons the game is a direct sequel to Conviction.

A video claiming to be from a pre-E3 Square Enix press briefing suggests that Final Fantasy XV will be announced in LA next week.
The surprise is that it isn’t a brand new game, however, but is in fact a rebranding of Final Fantasy Verses XIII.
If true, the game is supposedly coming to both Wii U and PS3, as suggested by the logos at the end of the trailer.
Rumours emerged in December that Square would use E3 2012 as a platform to reveal FFXV and that it would be multi-platform. But the video from which this news has merged – which can be seen below – is anything but conclusive.
