News from Lik Sang
Leave it to the experts if you want to end up with a great game based on a popular Anime and Manga franchise. A rule that certainly proves to be true if we look at who SEGA chose to be the developer of the latest videogame incarnation out of the Bleach universe coming our way. None other than Gunstar Heroes and Radiant Silvergun veteran Treasure stepped up and delivered a Beat'em Up that offers full online support on the Nintendo DS, allowing you to fight players globally. Thoroughly committed to 2D (and we love them for that attitude), Bleach: Souten ni Kakeru Unmei is Treasure's first NDS title. Director Masato Maegawa even commented in an interview once, that if developing for next generation systems like Xbox 360, the company would use polygons for the visuals, but'd still stick to 2D gameplay. It's just great to see that such masters of the genre won't give in to the overall realism-only worship of current times, but are staying true to what they excel in: pure 2D gaming bliss. Fun for all. Let's hope we'll see more glory from Treasure on next-gen hardware, in the spirit of this fresh Bleach title.
Our stock of Bleach DS was delivered to our warehouse last Friday night, only too late for preorders to be dispatched before Chinese New Year break. Our packing department is now back at full force and all reservations are getting shipped out as we speak. New orders are very welcome for US$ 49.90 only. Get it delivered for free with our Free Shipping Worldwide promotion, available for all import games at Lik Sang.
Back to Bleach for NDS: at the Jump World event in Tokyo last year, SEGA had the game already at display and set up for four players. What awaits you with Souten ni Kakeru Unmei is basically a very fine two-plane Beat'em Up. The game features two main attack solutions, you use a button each for either a strong or a weak attack. Guard with the right shoulder button, while L is used to switch between planes. While in combat, you lock yourself on to an opponent and are able to dash with the remaining face controls. Then, jumping sees you pressing up, where double jumps are also possible.

Hyrule.net is featuring some juicy new Twilight Princess video action, and it's not just a series of rehashed scenes from the demo. The short clip includes a "Wolf Link" fight, horseback battle, underwater exploration, animal care, and some lantern-lit adventuring. You'll have to become a registered member (it's free) to view the high-res version, but anyone can view the low-res stream, which, we might add, will still induce drooling. Go get your fix!

Today Ubisoft, one of the world's leading video game publishers announced that it will publish and distribute LOSTMAGICTM, the Taito-developed role-playing action video game for the Nintendo DSTM system in North America and Europe this spring.
"LOSTMAGIC brings role-playing games on the DS to a new level, capitalising on the innovative and unique gameplay abilities such as casting spells with the stylus and the global connectivity of the Wi-Fi mode," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "Ubisoft is proud to continue in its tradition of bringing cutting-edge games to gamers worldwide."
In LOSTMAGICTM, designed by renowned art director Yoshiharu Sato, peace in the world is challenged by a new evil force. The only hope lies with the wizard Isaac and the seven magic wands left behind by the creator. Monsters wield unimaginable power in this realm, and as Issac, the player will use the stylus to unleash magic spells and command numerous monster squads in magical battles.
Key Features:
Cast Spells With the Stylus! – Your stylus becomes your magic wand! Use different motions to unleash your magic.
Evolving Magic System – Players can combine up to three single spells to create more than 350 magic combinations using a symbol system exclusive to the DS.
Collect and Command Monsters – Learn to use each monster's special skill to gain the advantage in battle.
Use the Stylus to Open Up a New Frontier in RPGs – Experience strategy like never before! LOSTMAGIC's innovative RTS-type RPG makes full use of the unique capabilities of the DS. Control your units directly on-screen using a point-and-click interface that PC strategy gamers have enjoyed for years.
Challenge Others via Nintendo Wi-Fi connectivity – Create new characters and challenge friends over a Wi-Fi connection. In Dueling mode, players can test their magic casting skills and strategies against each other

News from Lik Sang
Let's start with a reminder, boys: Valentine's Day is on the 14th of February and that happens to be very soon indeed. "How could I forget? Now should I buy one more game for myself, or something more than a kiss-on-the-cheek for my girl?" Answer: Just buy games for your girl. Throw flowers and chocolates on the top if you have too, but for god's sake, buy your girl some games. That's how you efficiently expand a monthly budget: reach two targets with one hit; play in the pink world.
On top of the advice list goes the Nintendo DS Candy Pink. Already smokin' hot over the Christmas rush, this item is perfect to introduce your beloved one to the wonderful world of Nintendo. It comes in the perfect color (plus we got pink pouches too!), it's cool and innovative, and it offers diverse software libraries that will please both yourself and your lady. It's like a roses bouquet with a romantic poem, except it's better. Choose the right games to go along and it'll get you sex [Editor: I am actually not quite sure if I was allowed to publish such a pitch without getting hammered down by censorship over the next few days; I guess I'll know more tomorrow by checking my spam inbox for hate mails from Christian integrists]. As a matter of fact, Nintendo's motto is at expanding the gamers' audience, no matter who or how old you are. They have released over the last few months games for old people, for people who don't like games, for kids, for hardcore gamers, for casual gamers, for my buddy Daniel, for themselves, for me, for you, for everybody and everyone... including of course for women, if I may get back to the point. Be it in Japan or in the USA, female audiences love to train their Nintendogs. Chicks also dig Animal Crossing DS (which History will probably remember as the first "unisex" game ever), Mario Kart DS and many more of Nintendo's hits. Even the sensational music games from big N should please. Pick up wisely, remember it'll get you sex.

Waiting for new Revolution information is absolutely nothing like waiting for a bus. Firstly, the age-old addage about three turning up at once clearly isn't true. Revolution news barely ever involves having to look the other way while a drunk man pees in the corner of the bus stop, and finally - and most damningly of all - the Revolution just isn't a bus.
Anyway, following the blanket silence from Nintendo execs after company president Satoru Iwata's controller unveiling at TGS last year, it looks like more information on the elusive next-gen console could be ready to break.
According to industry magazine MCV, Iwata is set to reveal "key details" about the Revolution when he appears at this year's Games Developers Conference, taking place in San Jose between March 20 and 24. Citing senior sources at Nintendo, MCV speculates that Iwata's revelations might include pricing and release information.
If true, it's an interesting move given that most people assumed all major announcements regarding the console would be kept under wraps until this year's E3. The move could suggest any number of things, including a sooner-than-expected launch for the Revolution. Of course, it's also possible that Iwata might use GDC to unveil some of the machine's more mysterious features - Nintendo execs have constantly hinted that there are some major surprises left to announce.
Whatever Iwata's plans involve will remain a mystery until GDC at the earliest then. However, even if reports are inaccurate, it's unlikely the Revolution is going to remain an enigma once E3 gets under way. Excited? Oh yes.

I made a screen capture to my WIP game. press R+L in game to save a screenshot in a BMP format into a GBAMP/M3CF/SCCF/SCSD.
the capture uses a key IRQ, and i believe that a ROM loader (homebrew one like the MoonShell or Kicker) will be able to set the IRQ before executing the ROM. It uses the screen capture device and it saves to VRAM bank C (that's why you see a flicker when saving a screenshot) then save in any format you wish

The Chuckster has released a new version of the Atari 2600 emulator for the Nintendo DS, heres the info:
I integrated chism's FAT file I/O library into StellaDS to add the much needed support for high capacity flash memory devices. Create a directory called stellads in the root directory of your device and stash all of your ROMs in there. No need to recompile to get new ROMs! The buggy, awkward GBFS approach is no longer in use. Also, the menu now supports a near-infinite amount of ROMs thanks to the wonders of std::vector. Scrolling beyond the list works now as well. Directory traversal has not yet been implemented, however, so don't try selecting the dotted file names at the beginning of the list.
Included in the StellaDS download is a sample stellads ROM directory that you can copy onto your memory card to try out some free, public-domain Atari 2600 ROMs. Report any bugs to me via e-mail or on the forum, and have fun playing Adventure on your DS once again!

I've been cleaning up a sprite exporting tool I wrote a few of years back when I did a bit of gba coding, it's what I've been using for my rts. It's somewhat user friendly at the moment, so I figured I'd release it publically.
I've never tried other people's exporters, so I have no clue how it compares, or if it does anything differently.
Also included is some sample art to test it, and some exported files that it generated, so there's no need to download it to see what it will do, just grab the sample pack.
I'll put up some nds code to load and display an exported anim soon.

News from Lik Sang:
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Resident Evil Deadly Silence brings the bloody, horrific, and now classic tale of Spencer Mansion to the NDS. The US release arrived today, although as with past Ressie games in the states, some cut scenes have been censored. If you're thirsty for all the carnage you can get, we recommend picking up a copy of the full Japanese edition. Moving into the game though, Classic Mode lets you experience the original game without any changes, right down to the cut scenes and the 'so bad it's good' voice acting (fancy a jibble sandwich anyone?). Rebirth Mode on the other hand features a slew of changes, starting with improved controls, including Biohazard 3's 180 degree turn, and both the knife button and quick reload from Biohazard 4. The top screen displays a map, ammo and health meter, and there's also new traps, battles and puzzles, many of which make use of the touch screen.
Certain parts of the game will also switch to first person mode and wielding your knife with the stylus, you can slice and dice your way through rotting zombie flesh. At other times you can use it to wipe blood off the screen, or blow into the microphone to perform CPR on an unfortunate teammate. Characters have been both re-modeled and re-animated, and confirmed guests of the Mansion include Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton and Wesker. Not to be out-done, the zombies are upgraded too, being not only smarter, and not only chasing you from room to room, but in greater numbers also! All this alone would make for a spectacular remake, but no, Capcom always has to go that extra mile. Through a full on four player Wi-Fi mode, there's both co-op and competitive games to play, the latter being a race to kill the most monsters! With the US version in stock now, the Spencer Mansion is once again ready for dinner, erm, visitors. Preorders are all getting shipped as we speak, and more stock is available for new purchases.

February 7th, 2006, 17:29 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime has announced that there's still plenty of surprises in store as far as the Revolution is concerned, adding that nothing is likely to be revealed before this year's E3.
Speaking to US magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly, Fils-Aime said: "Come [May], we'll disclose a lot more. After, we'll disclose even more, and right about the time of the launch, we'll disclose even more... I'm talking beyond the controller, the virtual console; all the different elements we'll be sharing all the way up to launch."
When asked whether the Revolution might make use of an EyeToy-type peripheral or a microphone, Fils-Aime said we "could certainly see all of that."
"Again, our orientation is, how do we push the gaming experience, the interplay between the player and the game? So all of the different elements that enhance that capability's use of a camera, use of the microphone, voice activation; all of that, certainly I believe, is fair game."
Fils-Aime went on to say that the Revolution's online network is likely to work in the same way as the DS's Wi-Fi Connection service, reiterating Nintendo's intention to create "an environment that is more friend and peer-to-peer based, versus simply, 'I wanna go take on everybody for certain types of games.'"
He did not rule out the possibility of a virtual console system that lets gamers download older Nintendo games and play them on a DS, saying: "We certainly never say never."
"My concern would be, how do you embed that on a DS [cartridge] in addition to the game to really make it effective? But we've said from the start that Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is meant to be the service both for the DS as well as the Revolution. So could you see a merging of that technology at some point in the future? Certainly possible."

February 7th, 2006, 17:38 Posted By: wraggster
After reporting disappointing 2005 holiday earnings today, Activision executives held a conference call to talk about their plans for the future. As the company cited the ongoing transition from current-generation platforms to next-generation consoles as a major factor for its lower-than-expected profits, executives were eager to tell the Wall Street analysts participating in the call about their plans for the new crop of machines.
In its 2007 fiscal year, which runs from April 2006 to March 2007, Activision will "remain committed to maintaining a leadership position on next-generation platforms," said Activision publishing president and CEO Michael Griffith. Griffith said that, during those 12 months, his company plans to release five PSP titles and four Xbox 360 titles--one of which will be the just-announced multiplatform X-Men: The Official Movie Game (working title). More importantly, he revealed that Activision is planning to ship three PlayStation 3 launch titles and one Revolution launch title during that period. The revelation is further confirmation that both consoles will almost certainly launch by year's end, most likely in November.
Though Activision didn't name its PS3 and Revolution titles, it's likely that they will be based on existing properties. Stung by the less-than-stellar reception of its all-new IP Gun, which Griffith admitted "performed below our expectations," the publisher said that "fiscal 2007 will be a year of caution and investment as we manage through the remainder of the transition and focus resources to prepare for accelerated growth in the next cycle." In other words, the publisher will be relying on ots stable of tried-and-true franchises, which includes Call of Duty and Quake.
Ironically, Activision did identify some of the games set for release during its 2008 fiscal year (April 2007-March 2008). Those will include tie-ins for the films Shrek 3 and Spider-Man 3, as well as new titles based on the adventures of skater extraordinaire Tony Hawk and the X-Men comics and films. No specific platforms were mentioned, but given the fact that all next-generation consoles will have been on the market for months, it is almost certain the four franchises will be appearing on either the PS3, Revolution, or Xbox 360--or all three.

A tipster states that a recent unconfirmed issue of EGM is reporting that the Halo creator may be interested in developing a first-person shooter for the Revolution. Nintendo Revolution writes: "The father of the Halo series, Jason Jones, is extremely interested in working on the Nintendo Revolution, according to the latest issue of EGM... In the interview Mr. Jones talks about a FPS on the system and some of the great ideas he had for it."
Exciting speculation for first-person, Nintendo shooter fans. But who knows, despite concepts, how well the "rev-mote" will work for the genre.

Software for Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s DS portable game device dominated the January best-sellers list in Japan on the back of strong demand for games such as Mario Kart, Animal Crossing and three games designed to test brain power, an industry survey said on Tuesday.
Enterbrain, which publishes weekly and monthly retail sales data for games and game devices, said overall software unit sales in January were flat from a year earlier, while hardware sales were down 6.2 percent.
It blamed the lower hardware sales on the scarcity of Nintendo DS, which it said was the most popular device in the market.
Enterbrain, the publisher of Japan's leading game magazine Famitsu, said in its monthly report that eight of the top 10 best-selling games in Japan were DS games. Seven were by Nintendo.
A sequel to "DS Training to Strengthen Your Brain", a popular brain-training game developed under the guidance of a brain imaging professor, topped the chart with sales of over a million units since it was launched on December 29.
Nintendo also sold 231,770 units of a new game that helps to develop English skills in its first four days of sales, indicating that games for adults are accelerating in popularity.
Among games for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 2 games, Square Enix Co. Ltd.'s "Final Fantasy VII Dirge of Cerberus" topped the list, coming in fifth overall with about 365,495 units sold.
The top-selling game for Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 game console was Tecmo Inc.'s "Dead or Alive 4", at a distant 26th place with 74,782 units sold.
Nintendo DS as well as Sony's Playstation Portable and Playstation 2 were the top-selling game devices in January while Xbox 360 console sales continued to lag.
Microsoft sold 112,657 Xbox 360 units since launching in December, significantly less than January unit sales of each of the top three best-selling devices, Enterbrain found.

Forbes has an article talking with Nintendo of America's VP of Marketing Perrin Kaplan. She talks a little bit about Nintendo's upcoming plans, and the concept of the Blue Ocean. From the article: "For us, it's all about the experience, not if the technology allows you to play your game on the high-definition formats, which are now in such a small percentage of homes. Many independent sources tell us that experiencing current high-def games on a regular TV makes it near impossible to see everything clearly. That means the majority of homes are experiencing something lesser than what they bargained for.

Satoru Iwata is to return to the stage at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose next month, with the Nintendo president delivering a keynote address titled "Disrupting Development" at the event.
According to the official notes released by the conference organisers, Iwata's keynote will focus on areas including the DS product line-up, Nintendo's role in the next generation of consoles, and the need to expand videogames beyond the young adult demographic.
However, anticipation is high that Iwata, formerly a developer himself, will once again choose to unveil key elements of the company's strategy at GDC - as he did last year, when he used the stage at the conference to announce the Wi-Fi Connection free online service for the DS handheld and the backwards compatibility features of the Revolution console.
"We are extremely honored to feature an experienced platform leader such as Satoru Iwata as a keynote speaker," according to GDC's event director, Jamil Moledina. "As Nintendo reinvents the scope of what games can be, it is ever more crucial to share their creative and market-growing philosophies with the other leaders of the game creation industry."
Iwata's keynote will take place on the morning of March 23rd at 10.30AM (Pacific Standard Time).

Microsoft and Nintendo might be facing-off on the next-gen battlefield come the launch of Revolution, but Bill Gates' empire is still man enough to give credit where credit is due: it really, really likes Shigeru Miyamoto.
In fact, it seems that if there's one fabulous dream that the Washington, Redmond giant would love to see realised, it's getting the Nintendo genius on-board. Microsoft's Peter Moore has revealed his desire that "one day he [Miyamoto] will bring his incredible content and his incredible vision for what gaming should be to the Xbox," in a recent interview with EGM magazine.
Ha, good luck on that one Mr Moore, who says - presumably in jocular manner - that he'd be willing to forfeit his slick cars and "give up my house, too, if I could get it reimbursed back on my expenses" in order to secure the talents of Shigeru Miyamoto for Microsoft's Xbox venture.
EGM's interview also found Moore and big Bill Gates himself discussing Revolution and its controller/wand, both impressed by Nintendo's innovation but remaining sceptical about its potential. "Nintendo... You've got to give it to them... They march to the beat of a different drummer," said Gates, although added that "We'll watch and see... Holding two different things like that? Anyway..."
Airing further views on Nintendo's innovation (and Revolution), he went on to say that "Sometimes that makes them incredibly right and sometimes that makes them incredibly wrong. They're certainly making a very different bet in terms of how much they're putting into the graphics this time," and Gates also explained that he thinks that "there is a question as to whether they can get outside the young age bracket at all. That's been tough for them."
And does he wish Microsoft had invented a similar controller to Revolution's? "Uh... No," he replied, while apparently laughing.
Meanwhile, Peter Moore admitted to EGM that he found Revolution's controller "very intriguing". "I'm always a big fan of companies that try and innovate in a space where we need to do things a little differently," he said, but like Gates it's still 'wait and see' because "there's no game to demo against it yet, to get a feel for it". Still, Moore said he still respects and admires the fact that Nintendo is "willing to take what is clearly a huge risk to innovate."
"Let's see if it works out for them," he concluded.

New Press Release:
The entertainment industry is evolving rapidly and with it so is gaming, diversifying year on year to appeal to newer and larger audiences. In keeping with the increased demands for social interaction through gaming, Nintendo's Wi-Fi gaming service has seen users skyrocket, with more than 20 million connections to the service and over 850,000 unique users worldwide in just over two months since it launched in November 2005.
Nintendo's Wi-Fi connection service has revolutionised handheld gaming by allowing anyone to play against friends from across the globe, simply, safely and for free* either at home or on the go. There is no fee to pay and no difficult set-up procedures - gamers simply insert their Wi-Fi enabled game into their Nintendo DS, within a Nintendo Wi-Fi connection hotspot, and press connect. Nintendo DS owners can also enjoy Wi-Fi gaming from the comfort of their homes using their existing Wi-Fi broadband connection. People can play without fear of harassment from other players as they can choose to play only with their friends.
As part of its ongoing drive to provide free Wi-Fi access to Nintendo DS owners Nintendo has signed deals with major Wi-Fi providers across Europe giving users access to over 20,000 free Nintendo Wi-Fi access points.
Nintendo has partnered with the following Wi-Fi providers across Europe:
UK - BT Openzone and The Cloud
France - Meteor Networks
Germany – T-Com
Spain - Telefonica of Spain

*Usual broadband line rental costs apply when accessing the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection from home.

How does Resident Evil's new portable rendition live up to the classic series? With a current average ranking of 76% and many more reviews outstanding, it could be a welcome addition for many gamers. Here's what the critics are saying:
Gamespot 79% - "You know a game's a classic when you can play it years later and still have a great time. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is surprisingly successful at translating the scary bits of the original to a much smaller format, and the end result has a lot to offer Resident Evil fans as well as those who've always wondered what the fuss is about."
IGN 70% - "... It's hard to ignore all the little quirks in gameplay and presentation that were a bit easier to disregard in the earlier days of 3D adventuring, so if we look at it as a new title instead of a revival, well, it's not a whole lot better than a good but flawed game design."
1UP 80% - "In an effort to milk the Resident Evil cow once again, Capcom has converted the classic but flawed original title to -- of all places -- the Nintendo DS, and while the game succeeds on many levels, it also suffers in some obvious respects... While polygon counts have shrunk to accommodate the handheld's particular specs, you never feel shortchanged."

Been a pretty solid couple of weeks for news for Nintendo and their DS, which will apparently soon get access to some sweet new features to take advantage of its built in WiFi. Beginning in late March DS owners will be able to pick up game demos, trailers, and content for their DS by coming within proximity of DS kiosks installed in Best Buys and GameStops the nation over (downloaded content gets erased the next time the console is shut down), and fans of Metroid Prime: Hunters will also be getting in-game voice chat for battles on Nintendo's multiplayer network. Now if only Nintendo of America would give us a freaking date for the launch of their DS Lite, which they're obviously to help pimp by introducing these services.

Here's a trio of images for New Super Mario Bros, the platforming plumber's handheld outing, which show just how the DS touch screen will be used while smashing, stomping and leaping through the nostalgia-tastic 2D levels.
The touch screen works as a scoreboard and inventory, and you can select power-ups with the stylus for instant mushroom energy. There's also a progress bar to flag up Mario and Luigi's position in the level - great for tracking a wireless rival as you race through the levels in multiplayer. We can't wait.
New Super Mario Bros will be released for DS towards the end of the year

News From Desktopman:
On request from mic I wrote two demos, one for 2d capture to VRAM, and one for FIFO display mode. Capture mode is great for taking screenshots on hardware. Fifo demo also shows how to use the master brightness register, to darken/lighten video output. Use up/down keys to change brightness. If you have a gbamp/compatible Chishm lib device, you can capture directly to a BMP file. Easy to use source in this version:

Wintermute has updated his Devkit for the DS, whats new:
Earlier versions of the installer have had problems with checking the version of the ini file which contains the current versions of the packages. This resulted in the internal ini file being used in preference to the downloaded file when copying the installer and associated files to a machine with no internet access and causing the install to fail. Version 1.2.5 attempted to address this issue but a bug was introduced which prevented the installer from downloading a new version of itself. If you use the updater and it doesn't download 1.2.6 then please download this version manually using the link above. Apologies for any inconvenience.

The Nintendo DS was the top-selling gaming console of 2005 in Japan with over 4 million units being sold. But a game system without games is just a fancy paperweight, so it's no surprise that DS software flew off the shelves, too. A report in the latest issue of Famitsu, however, reveals that DS games sold so well, the handheld managed to knock off the once untouchable reigning champion of consoles.
Boosted by four of the top five selling titles in Japan, DS games outsold PlayStation 2 games during 2005. Over the previous two years, more than half of the games sold in Japan were for Sony's system. PS2 games accounted for 55.4 percent of game sales in 2003 and 57.1 percent in 2004. But the picture changed in 2005 as DS games accounted for 41.4 percent of game sales in the country, and the PS2's share fell to 36.2 percent.
The DS had three games that sold one million copies or more in Japan in 2005. The PlayStation 2, on the other hand, had only one title sell more than a million copies last year, Square Enix's Kingdom Hearts II.
The good news continues to roll for the DS, as the recently announced DS Lite redesign appears to have captured the public's interest in Japan. According to a survey taken by Famitsu.com, 63.4 percent of those polled are looking forward to the DS Lite, saying that they're impressed with the new look, and they've wanted a brightness control for the handheld. 8.8 percent aren't impressed with the redesign, because they're already satisfied with their current DS, or they think it's just an excuse to raise prices. 27.8 percent stayed neutral with their opinion, saying that they don't think the new model looks too different than before, and they'll need hands-on time to make a decision.
However, "looking forward to" and actually buying are two different things. When asked whether they'll actually buy a DS Lite, 29.3 percent of respondents said they will purchase the handheld, while 34.6 percent said they won't, and 36.1 percent said they aren't sure.

Success HK have posted that the US version of Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is now out:
A remake of the first Resident Evil game with the DS's unique feature set in mind as you work your way through the now classic storyline involving Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield and that well-known mansion that introduced the world to Resident Evil back in 1996. Zombies are now smarter and actually work their way around doors as they chase after you. You'll find that there's no solace in a room that you think you've completely freed from zombie infestation.
Whereas the original game focused more on puzzle solving, the new version's "rebirth mode" design places a heavy emphasis on action with more enemies and ammo. Also, nearly half the puzzles have been freshly upgraded providing new challenges for fans. The DS's special features are being put to use in the remake as well, as you use the touchpad to solve puzzles and slash at zombies. Also featured are 2-4 player wireless mode (in Co-Op and VS challenges).

Over 850,000 unique users have connected to Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection online gaming service for the Nintendo DS handheld since it launched in November, the company has announced, with over 20 million total connections registered.
The service, which is supported by titles including Mario Kart DS and Tony Hawk's American Sk8land, is provided for free and allows users to connect wirelessly either at home, or at a variety of public hot-spots.
According to Nintendo, there are now more than 20,000 of those hot-spots spread around Europe, thanks to deals with companies including BT Openzone (Britain), Telefonica (Spain), Meteor (France), T-Mobile (Netherlands) and The Cloud (Britain and Scandinavia).
"Our aim is to provide a free Wi-Fi service that is simple to use and accessible to everyone," according to Nintendo of Europe's new marketing director, Laurent Fischer. "We have over 20,000 free Nintendo Wi-Fi hotspots in place across Europe, ranging from airports, coffee shops, bars and hotels, and already over 850,000 people globally are using our service."
More major titles supporting Wi-Fi Connection are on the horizon, including Animal Crossing: Wild World, which was Japan's biggest-selling game last year and appears in Europe on March 31st, and Metroid Prime Hunters, which launches on May 5th and will be the first game to support voice chat over the service. Ubisoft's LOSTMAGIC title is set to be the first RPG to support the service, later this spring.
Wi-Fi Connection isn't just limited to the Nintendo DS, however; the service will also be used by the Nintendo Revolution console when it launches later this year, with Nintendo undoubtedly hoping that the fact that many DS owners will have configured their home networks for the service already will ease the process of bringing the new console online.
The potential spanner in the works, in the UK at least, is the continuing poor availability of Nintendo's own Wi-Fi USB adapter. The adapter is designed to allow people without their own wireless networks to create a simple network correctly configured for the DS, but many major retailers are not carrying the unit at present.

Nintendo has declined to update the release status of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess since announcing that the title would be delayed into 2006, but according to TVG, Best Buy recently informed pre-orderers that the game will not ship until November—at the earliest. Gulp.
If true, we can expect to see Twilight Princess debuting alongside the Nintendo Revolution, as many have speculated would be the case all along. A current-gen title the killer launch app for a next-gen console? Hey, if there's a company that's gonna pull it off, its name's Nintendo.

Game Daily has posted their pics for the nine most obscure N64 games they feel should grace the download service on Nintendo's forthcoming Revolution console. From the article: "Some of [N64's] games actually changed the entire industry which is why we're more than willing to sit down with our shiny new Revolution consoles and download lots of great N64 titles, and while we're pretty sure that Nintendo will give us the goods when it comes to Star Fox 64 and Mario Kart, there [are] plenty of obscure games that we'd like to play... These games may not be as popular as Ocarina, but they deserve their spot amongst the greats."

REminiscence is a rewrite of the engine used in the game Flashback from Delphine Software. This program is designed as a cross-platform replacement for the original executable and uses the SDL library. Original version by Gregory Montoir, cyx@users.sourceforge.net - http://membres.lycos.fr/cyxdown/reminiscence/
Copy the original dos data files into the romdisk/Data directory and run the createromdisk.bat which will create the romdiskfs and append it to the end of the nds and ds.gba binaries.
Still needs support for sound in my SDL library, so no sound in this release.
Has been tested on the superdisk and m3 and should work with any flashcard that supports appended filesystems, its not compatible with the gbamp though, I still need one for testing if anyone has one to send me or wants to buy me one
Enjoy,
Troy Davis(GPF)

With its two usable screens and handy touch-screen interface we're surprised that a Nintendo DS web browser is yet to hit the scene. By the looks of it though, Nintendo's vice president of sales and marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, is just as surprised at this omission as we are - and plans to do something about it.
Speaking to American games mag EGM, the Fiks-Aime explained, "We thought a licensee (third party) was getting into that area, and once we heard that we backed off", adding that Nintendo might develop the DS web browser itself. "If we end up seeing that nobody's really going to enter that space, it may be something that we'll go back and look at. I know that Mr. Iwata has talked about it."
With 860,000 people now battling it out on Nintendo's Wi-fi Connection service, we're sure that a fair few DS owners would be interested in some touch-screen web browsing. Expect more news as it comes.

Revolution game announcements are steadily picking up pace as the videogame world waits with baited breath for Nintendo's impending grand unveiling, and the latest title confirmed for the wand-'o-matic hails from Blitz Games.
Unfortunately Blitz Games, based in the UK, isn't saying a fat lot about its Revolution game at the moment. All the details it's willing to spill at this stage are that it's signed the title up and it'll "be announced shortly by a major publisher." So, erm, keep eyes peeled for an announcement, coming soon. Ho-hum.
Still, Andrew Oliver, co-founder and development director at Blitz Games, was willing to express general feelings about Nintendo's new console. He's said the developer is "genuinely very excited to be working on the Revolution", adding: "Nintendo's innovation over the years has trail blazed new concepts and the new controller is no exception. It will give people new ways to play existing genres but moreover we hope it will spawn altogether new gaming experiences."

Spacy updated the best GBA Emulator for Windows, heres the info:
Hi there!

Here are the changes to the last WIP version:
- Applied mhamanaka's patch for the jopyad config problems for japanese users
- Updated DirectInput to version 8
- Updated DirectSound to version 8
- Changed DirectX Initializations
- Updated GNU GPL info in every source file
- Removed some remaining SDL code
- Increased code's 64 bit compatibility
- Fixed Tab order for Option Dialog
- Dialog for video settings now working
- D3D: Calculation of the image position is now done only once instead of every frame
- Pre-defined full screen resolutions now keep the current bit depth
- Pre-defined 1024 & 1280 modes work now with D3D

- Made fullscreen mode select code look better
- Removed remaining GUID variables from DirectDraw
- Added option to D3D to keep aspect ratio (affects windowed & fs mode)

thechuckster has released a new version of Stella DS. It's a port of the Atari 2600 emulator Stella to the Nintendo DS.
Heres whats new:
I compiled in the latest version of chism's FAT library. Now StellaDS should support more devices such as the Supercard SD. Tweaked the menu to allow wraparound. Began using Subversion to manage my source code under the suggestion of StoneCydh from #dsdev.

As many of you are probably already aware, I am making an Organizer Suite for the DS, aptly named DSOrganize. Although it is still in early beta, it is quite usable. Current features include:
Calendar mode with editable reminders.
Day Planner mode with editable time slots.
Address Book with vCard support. Currently this can read and write back .vcf files that can be used in Apple's Adress Book, Outlook in Windows, and probably plenty of other apps in Linux. It does not, however, preserve data that it doesn't support, as currently there is a bug I can't trace in this routine.
INI file settings, with a configuration screen in the app.
Handwriting recognition. Just start a glyph on an empty part of the screen. View the alphabet below for information.
Multiple language support, see Sample.lng for usage. Dutch translation maintained by bLAStY and dsboi.
Fixes in this release include:
Fixed a bug with Edit DayView displaying wrong edit times.
Fixed the bug where DayView randomly lost entries (again).
Added 12/24 hour time and first/last name swap options.
Fixed special characters on the address display font.
Fixed cursor jumping back to current time when you cancel an edit on DayView and Address View.
The handwriting recognition is not nearly 100% done. Also, the app currently only works when the DSOrganize directory is on the root of the card. I will be fixing this as time goes on, but for now it stays like this. The last tested release is reported to work on GBAMP, SC SD, M3 CF. Please continue to test each release I put out for compatibility, especially since chishm just put out a new FAT lib. I am aware of the slow calendar load time on SC SD and the random crashes some people are experiencing with the SC. I think this is due to the nature of the driver being beta right now. I haven't seen this behavior at all when testing on GBAMP.

New Keyboard app, heres the info:
"Ever since I saw Ferris Bueller's day off (IMDB) I wanted to have a sampling keyboard, but these things were always too expensive for me. So, as a first coding experiment with my Nintendo DS, I coded a software sampling keyboard that uses the DS's microphone and touchscreen. It's still pretty basic, but I think it's already quite funny to use. So, feel free to try it out and please give me bug reports and feature requests.
News!
The new version 1.1 is out! I figured out what the various problems with microphone quality were and fixed them So now, sound quality and volume are vastly improved!
Sorry for the huge delay and sorry for not adding new features. Several people had great ideas on how to make this program much cooler. I'm kind of working on these, but for another project, that is soon to be released. After that, a new sampling keyboard will come. Please be patient :-)"

Looks like the PSP isn't the only portable gaming device in town to get a Datel MAX 4GB hard drive attachment ; the same sickos who brought our already hefty PlayStation Portable to a near unbearable size have whipped up the MAX Media Player for the Nintendo DS, which turns those empty GBA and DS game slots in your portable into some sort of multimedia monster. We're still waiting to find out exactly which codecs it supports, but what we're more concerned about is how well this thing's going to work in our DS Lite (whenever we actually wind up getting one of those).

Bringing the traditionally PC-centric football management genre to consoles has always been a tricky task. Rapid menu navigation has never lent itself well to console joypads, and finding an effective console interface has been a constant hurdle for developers. However, veteran management dev Sports Interactive has created an intuitive interface with Football Manager '06 on Xbox 360, but, as it also shifts gaze to the potential of Nintendo's Revolution innovation, it spies plenty of new interface opportunities.
In an interview with CVG, SI's managing director Miles Jacobson has revealed his ideas for a Football Manager on Revolution. While he's admitted that the company doesn't have development kits for the system, he's said that he's keen to check out Nintendo's new console. "We will happily evaluate any platform to see if the game [Football Manager] can be done on it," he explained. "If Nintendo ever want to talk to us they know where we are."
Jacobson then shared some creative spark with us, on what could well turn out to be Football Manager Revolution. "It'd be quite interesting though, you could use the controller as something to tell the players off at half-time," he suggested, "wagging it at the screen could mean they've been bad and making a tick could mean they've been good." He then quickly expressed his satisfaction with the Xbox 360 interface: "You could use [the Revolution controller] as a cursor but we're very happy with the control system on the 360."

News from Lik Sang
After fitting Magicstor's 4 gigabytes Microdrive into the PSP, through their clever Memory Stick adapter, Datel is moving on multiplying products that make use of the same storage solution for all consoles. Hot on the heels of the successful and popular 4GB Hard Drive for the PSP, Datel is trying indeed to expand their range to the Xbox 360, as we were reporting a couple of weeks ago, and now, more excitingly, to the Nintendo DS too!
Immediately posing as serious competition for the NDS/GBA Movie Player and for Nintendo's Play-Yan, Datel's 4GB Max Media Player will feature playback features for various types of files, video or audio. You will be able to watch your movies, browse through your pictures and listen to your songs on the Nintendo DS thanks to this new converter, same as you can do using the two products mentioned above for a very long time already. Where the new device from Datel differs from the previously released add-ons is in the memory solution it relies on (built-in hard drive instead of exchangeable compact flash or SD cards, that respectively Movie Player and Play-Yan were making use of), and in the fact that the main software slots in through the actual Nintendo DS cart port rather than via the GBA connector. We hope that this will allow new display options and more features that were not possible with its two predecessors, but in order to check that out, we will need an evaluation sample of the 4GB Max Media Player to be in our mits. We are trying to score one from our mates at Datel while you are reading this, stay tuned for our hands-on report as soon as the first prototype reaches our desk.
Preorders are written down for 179 US$, and release date is poised to be March 2006. This is our final price for the product, after cross-checking earlier information with Datel directly.

the British Gaming Blog has videos of Tetris on the DS. The short movies include the standard mode, and the 'push mode' that will be playable over Nintendo's wifi service. From the Joystiq post: "As for the ingenious Donkey Kong-themed Push mode, it seems ideally suited for Wi-Fi multiplayer battles. Each player is relegated to one of the DS screens, with the opponent being mirrored in the bottom screen (i.e. his blocks move upwards). Each player slots Tetrominoes into a cluster of blocks that's initially right in the middle of the two playing fields. Performing well and racking up combos pushes the block cluster away and into your opponent's screen, lessening his maneuvering space and chances of survival.

February 14th, 2006, 21:39 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo of America vice president Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken out once more about the company's strategy, promoting the Nintendo DS and Revolution as "disruptive" devices - and confirming that the latter will be playable at E3.
Writing in a column for marketing news site Brandweek, Fils-Aime expresses the belief that the rapid technological progress in the home electronics and entertainment sector has overshot the market itself, leaving a major opportunity for devices with a different appeal to enter the space.
He compares the situation to the one in the portable music device space, where technological progress advanced far faster than the market's willingness to keep pace, and the eventual dominant platform was the iPod - whose advantages, he notes, were not that it was more powerful or higher capacity than its rivals, but that it was "cheaper, simpler, smaller, and frequently more convenient to use."
Similarly, the special effects blockbusters of the late 1970s, such as Star Wars and Jaws, triggered a revolution in the effects market - but in the following decades, special effects were no longer enough to sell a movie, and there were many costly flops as well as a wide range of "low-tech productions" which did extremely well.
What Fils-Aime is driving at, of course, is the fact that both the DS and Revolution have chosen to go down a low-tech route compared to competitors such as PSP and PS3, instead offering innovative and more accessible control methods and a lower price point - factors which, he believes, will lead to them being disruptive products for the whole market.
It sounds like the industry will get a chance to see this disruption first hand at E3, too; speaking to US website 1up, Fils-Aime revealed this week that Revolution will definitely be playable at the show, with the firm currently working on technical details to ensure that the controllers don't interfere with games being played on other nearby screens (and that they don't get stolen, for that matter).
Whether we'll see significantly more about the console before E3 or not, however, remains tightly under wraps - with the content of Satoru Iwata's keynote at the Game Developers Conference remaining a closely guarded secret.
"The battle for hearts and minds and hands of developers started last fall," Fils-Aime told The Mercury News, "and it comes to a head at GDC" - but whether this means that the final secrets of the Revolution will be laid bare in San Jose next month remains to be seen.

As you'll know if you have an encyclopaedic knowledge of all the little names that appear on "games in development" lists, Hideo Kojima's favourite silly handheld series Boktai is to receive an outing on Nintendo DS at some point.
But - perhaps bored of the withering looks of people like me who prefer to keep the curtains drawn - the Konami dev team is doing away with the sun sensor that used to charge up weapons, according to Japanese magazine Koro Koro Comic, in an article picked up on by GameSpot.
Instead, players will have to work around an in-game sun, which will live on the top-screen charging things up - subject to, er, going behind clouds. Then, at night, it buggers off completely leaving you to worry about an increased number of enemies.
Bad news for people who don't get to play stuff during the day; good news for people who know how to change the clock on the DS.
Not much else is known about it, but it seems safe to bet on it making its way to Europe or at the very least America, since the GBA ones did (even if they made an almighty song and dance about getting their arses in gear and materialising).

Probably topping the list of the least needed projects for the DS, I wrote during the weekend a quick hack of a Truetype font reader/renderer:
Curve straightening is not implemented yet, so if you scale it too much up you'll notice the jagged edges. It worked with all the fonts I threw it, but it's far from perfect, so if you have one that doesn't work please give me a link ^

While playing Brain Training, I noticed some strange flickering effect on the text on the top screen of the DS ... What made it was the fact that when you look this screen from above, dark grays become black, and from below clear colors become white !
So i thought that if it was possible to make the left eye see only dark colors and the right eye only clear colors, it would be possible to display 3D stereoscopic pictures !!

Following on the heels of Sony's introduction of a web browser for the PlayStation Portable in the middle of last year, Nintendo has announced that the Opera browser will be made available for the DS handheld in the coming months.
Unlike the PSP browser, which was distributed for free as part of an update to the system software in the machine, the DS browser will be sold like a game cartridge, it was announced in a presentation in Tokyo yesterday.
The browser will fully support the features of the system including the dual-screen layout and the touch-screen input method, and will allow users to browse the web from any wireless network - although whether web browsing on the system will be free at locations which have Wi-Fi Connection hotspots remains to be seen.
The Opera browser is also available on a range of other PC and mobile platforms, but this is the first time that it will have been ported to a videogame console. Information about the availability of the browser has yet to be announced.
This isn't the first piece of non-games software to be announced by Nintendo for the DS; at the start of this year, the company revealed that a range of travel phrasebooks for the console are in the works.
The announcement of the browser was made at a special event in Tokyo which was mostly designed to introduce the forthcoming DS Lite console to the Japanese press, but which also served as a forum for a number of new product announcements. Along with the browser, Nintendo also revealed plans to launch a digital TV receiver for the DS in Japan, which will plug into the standard game port and will receive terrestrial digital signals used by Japanese broadcasts.

Nintendo goes just a little bit further with its plans to update the Nintendo DS, announcing that it should soon be adding features—like web surfing and HD TV programming. Though this would first be for Japanese DS owners, the company hopes to begin selling the web browser (which will work in conjunction with the DS’s WiFi wireless network) in June and launch the card with digital TV receiver and antenna by the end of 2006. The web browser was developed with Opera software and should cost about $32.
Other announcements included a new lineup for Japanese software, like a foreign language guide for travelers, a reference guide in Japanese and English, training software to improve penmanship in Japanese and a cooking guide giving step-by-step voice instructions for recipes. Wow. Oh, and Tetris DS that would include characters like Mario and Donkey Kong in awkward poses.

Pang Ya, anyone? Tecmo's porting it's online golf game, Pang Ya, to consoles, starting with the Revolution. Besides being a strong candidate for Nintendo's next-gen Japanese launch, few other details about the game are known. Will Pang Ya take advantage of the Revolution's gyroscopic capabilities? Will gamers be able to tee off on the online network? Will the title be released outside of Japan? Your guess is as good as ours

In a press conference scheduled to take place in Japan today, Nintendo announced that a non-firmware web-browser add-on from Opera and a 1Seg Digital TV Tuner add-on will be arriving for the DS in Japan. There's no word yet on bringing these add-ons to the West, though Reggie's hinted at it already.
The Opera software will release in June for roughly $32. Additional items of note include a May Japanese release date for New Super Mario Brothers (helloooo, import), a budget price for Tetris DS, the announcement of several games like Calligraphy Training DS and a cooking title, footage shown from Children of Mana and Xenosaga Episode 1-2, and "brief talk" concerning games such as Super Robot Wars, Dynasty Warriors, and Winning Eleven Nine (with the latter two titles getting Wi-Fi support).

Dark hints, rumours and much reading between the lines suggests Nintendo still has one major secret about the Revolution to reveal - and all eyes have been looking to the Games Developers Conference next month for the grand revelation. But new rumours hitting the 'net say the cat might be out the bag already.
The game's afoot, quite literally in this case, as newest gossip now suggests a foot-controlled peripheral is planned.
Okay so it's got to be taken with the usual truck-load of salt, as gaming blog Kotaku points out - but the site quotes info from a source (who apparently has a mate working on third-party Revolution peripherals) revealing details on a piece of Revolution hardware codenamed Kick Stick. According to the source, the peripheral sits on the floor in front of your chair and sports two insets in which a player places his feet.
"...when your feet are placed inside the contoured grooves you are able to slide each foot independently within a radius," the source stated his friend had informed him, adding that this friend also "gave the example of a FPS."
"In one hand you have your analog stick for turning and looking, tethered to that is the revolution controller that is used for aiming/zooming and moving the reticule. The Kick Stick is what you use to actually move. If you wanted to walk forward in the game you would slide your feet slightly forward on the device. To run you would slide your feet further forward. To strafe, one foot is stationary, while the other moves in the direction you wish to strafe."
Is this peripheral really genuine? Or is it simply a Nintendo fan-boy's wet dream? We've absolutely no idea, but while it sounds beyond the far side of reality, we have to admit that it's an intriguing idea. We'll just have to wait and see what emerges from the official Nintendo Revolution info vault in the near-future. We'll keep taking the pills naturally.

Happy Nintendo Wednesday everyone! Following the company's revelations of DS web browsing shenanigans and TV tuning escapades, it's our duty to bring you some juicy DS software nuggets too. Unfortunately, when we say nuggets, we're not joking - expect a single paragraph news belch to follow.
To kick off, New Super Mario Bros. for DS, Nintendo's first proper 2D Mario platformer since either Super Mario World or Yoshi's Island (depending on your quantitive methodology), is now scheduled for Japanese release this May - somewhat surprisingly, given the veil of secrecy surrounding the title up to this point. The game combines traditional 2D environments with some very impressive looking 3D models and, it goes without saying, we're more than a little excited about the whole thing.
Furthermore, in a surprise third paragraph, the company also announced that Konami's competition-flattening Winning Eleven series (Pro Evolution Soccer in the West) is scheduled to hit the DS soon. Although not much is known about the title at the moment, Nintendo did confirm that the game will feature online play utilising its Wi-fi Connection service. Knickers: officially damp.

Last week's Gamasutra question of the week dealt with the possibility of new genres for Nintendo's Revolution system. Some interesting answers from the industry, as always. From the article: "I would say the interesting part is not what new genres will come about, but how most existing genres will be transformed by this. For example, fighting games will no longer have to be about special moves and combos when you can simply put one controller in each hand and start punching and blocking like in real life (maybe strap one on a leg to kick).

Today, Nintendo announced the inclusion of a web browser for its portable powerhouse, the DS. Naturally, if the DS is getting web surfing capability, wouldn't the Revolution also see some of that action? According to Nintendo Gal, who thought to phone NOA to get the official word. According to the voice on the other line, "Revolution owners will have the option to purchase that functionality."
It seems fitting, but no concrete details have yet to be announced. We are hesitant to call this a confirmation, as the information came from a phone operator and not a higher-up (Shiggy, Iwata, or Reggie). With GDC and E3 coming up, though, that all could soon change.

Big News article from Lik Sang
Nintendo held a DS conference yesterday where a couple of noticeable good things were talked about. The Nintendo DS Lite was on display and did of course steal the show, but there were many other topics that are of interest! Before digging into them, let's keep our attention a bit on the Lite, as we have received videos from our friends at GameTrailers of the TV commercial that is currently getting rolled for the promotional campaign over Japan:
Hit Games to Come
The first ever screenshots of Winning Eleven DS were revealed by Konami, which, software wise, was certainly the highlight of the show. The quality of graphics seems to be close to what the series was on PlayStation, and that's one title soccer fanatics for sure are waiting for with high expectations. Other software titles that gathered quite a bit of attention on the showfloor were Super Robot Wars DS, Shin Sangoku Musou DS, Mario Basket 3 on 3, Final Fantasy III, Gyakuten Saiban 4, Tales of the Tempest, A.S.H. and the next Tamagotchi. It's been a good week on the Nintendo DS software front of things, as, already earlier this week, Metroid Prime Hunters Voice Chat feature was unveiled, while we received a release date (May 2006), new movies and new screenshots of Mario Bros DS (all this, and more, is covered in details in our latest Weekly Gaming Update)!
Nintendo DS Internet Browser
Nintendo has teamed up with Opera to deliver Nintendo DS users with an Internet browser. You'll be able to surf the world wide web on the go, using the Wi-Fi connection, thanks to a software cartridge from Opera. The cart will retail for 3800 Yen in Japan, which approximately converts to US$ 32. It's coming out in Japan in June 2006. There is no firm release date announced yet for the western world, but there is no doubt that this product will have the international market on target sooner or later.
Nintendo DS TV Tuner
Codenamed "1-Seg" or "1-Segment", the TV Tuner kit for Nintendo DS has also been confirmed and the final design has been revealed. Much less bulky and much simpler than what was shown on the initial picture a year ago, the TV Tuner now comes under the form of software cartridge to which a receiving antenna has been attached. Light and slim, as we all like it with handheld add-ons. You can select channels on the touchscreen, while you're watching shows on the main panel. Release date has to be fully confirmed but rumors are mentioning April 2006 as the aimed launch window. Final Yen price is unknown at press time.

The Japanese software charts are littered with new releases this week, although the almost total market dominance of the Nintendo DS remains unchecked - with the titles for the handheld accounting for more than half of the all-formats top ten.
In all, 20 new releases made their debut in the top 100, generating 62.82 per cent of overall software sales. Sony's PlayStation 2 was the only other platform to feature alongside the DS in the top ten, with four titles including this week's number one.
Series spin-off Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII claimed the top spot for Square-Enix, racking up sales of 392,000 units, while Capcom's Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams achieved sales in excess of 100,000 units, taking third place in the all-formats top ten.
Banpresto's RPG title, Ar Tonelico, sits in seventh place, and the only remaining PS2 title is Konami's Winning Eleven 9 bonus pack, which scraped in at number ten. As in previous weeks, the remainder of the chart belongs solely to the DS, the only noticeable decline in sales coming from Animal Crossing: Wild World (previously shifting in excess of a million units in the first fortnight on sale) which slipped from two to five, and Mario Kart DS, which dropped four places from five to nine.
Nintendo's efforts to diversify the content for its handheld and include educational elements doesn't appear to have affected sales in the slightest, as English Training DS jumps into second place with sales of approximately 240,000 units.
Brain Age 2 and Brain Age continue the trend, both titles performing well at retail and resting in the charts in fourth and sixth place respectively. SEGA's Bleach DS completes the strong performance for the device, entering the charts at number eight.
Sales of the DS and the plethora of innovative and original software titles have been considerably increased thanks to the availability of connected gaming via Wi-Fi hotspots in locations such as cafes, pubs and transport stations. Almost 50 per cent of US users took advantage of the online service in its first week of availability, and the service currently boasts over 3 million users worldwide.

Majesco and Backbone give robot-heavy franchise 20 types of vehicles, wireless play, and a new story on Nintendo's portable.
Piloting giant walking robots in combat requires years of training, lightning-quick reflexes, and nerves of steel. But in gamers' cases, it'll just require ample control of a DS stylus. Details have been released about MechAssault: Phantom War, which makes its way to the DS later this year.
The third-person shooter is currently in development by Backbone Entertainment, a division of Foundation 9 Entertainment. The top screen will show the traditional third-person view of the action, and the bottom screen will show the inside of the combat, complete with BattleMech controls. Using the stylus, gamers will be able to hack Mechs, eject themselves, and switch weapons.
The single-player mode features 24 campaigns spanning four planets, and wireless multiplayer allows up to four players to compete in three different modes. Twenty types of vehicles will be included in the game, such as BattleMechs, tanks, and BattleArmor.
Rating and pricing information has not been announced for MechAssault: Phantom War.

As details trickle in as to the full extent of Nintendo's browser plans for its increasingly-essential DS portable, fresh information on the technology underpinning the Internet software is starting to trickle out.
To enable a smooth web experience, the DS will receive a RAM upgrade, via the Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. The add-on will be bundled with the Opera browser DS cart, the whole package costing just a shade under 20 quid in Japan. No US or European announcement regarding the surfing software has yet surfaced, though something is expected within the next fortnight.
Nintendo has not disclosed how beefy the injection of RAM will be for the DS, nor has it opted to comment on possible future applications for the memory upgrade. Speculation is rife the the DS will follow in the footsteps of the Nintendo 64, which successfully deployed a RAM upgrade used in games including Perfect Dark, Zelda: Majora's Mask, Turok 2 and Banjo Tooie, though Nintendo declined to comment on the possibility at time of press.

February 17th, 2006, 17:48 Posted By: wraggster
It’s been a week when the games industry has been forced to stand up for itself. Firstly it was Atari hitting back at the Australian government’s decision to ban Marc Ecko's Getting Up, after claims that the game incited anti-social behaviour. And now it's Nintendo, coming under fire from none other than America’s ABC news, who made some rather outrageous (not to mention totally false) claims about how the DS is a potential threat to children and a grooming tool for kiddy fiddlers.
The furore kicked off on Tuesday night when ABC news claimed that they had made an "alarming discovery" and that they had "...an important warning for parents…. Action News has learned this popular gaming system [the DS] could put kids in harm's way."
The news was in response to Nintendo’s announcement earlier in the week that it now has had more than 850,000 users logging onto their WiFi Internet service since its launch last November.
According to ABC news, a concerned parent was horrified when she found that her 11 year-old daughter was receiving offensive messages over Pictochat from a stranger.
ABC also quoted Keith Dunn, an Internet Safety Expert, who said: "Predators are using Nintendo DS anywhere in the world. And it's going to be really hard to track down those individuals because of course, they're on a wireless network from a hotspot such as a coffee shop. Or if they're in a wireless environment, say a coffee shop or whatever, they jump on the wireless network so now you have predators who are trying to get at our kids."
Mr. Dunn went on to say that parents need to teach their children to apply 'stranger danger' rules to every and any situation. "Don't talk to strangers in game rooms if you don't know they're your friends. Don't talk to anyone. Just stop talking. Stop chatting in the game room." Now this all smells to SPOnG like - well, how should we put it - like a massive pile of cooked-up horseshit.
ABC news is simply trying to cook up a bit of a moral panic storm, but has unfortunately not fully checked the facts. If the 11-year-old girl in question was being pursued over pictochat, then it was not over a WiFi Internet connection, but it was from another DS user within 65 feet. Which is of course still worrying if it happened, but is not the same as being anonymously stalked over the Internet as the story suggests.
In response to the story, a Nintendo UK spokesperson told SPOnG yesterday that the company’s line was: "Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service is a safe environment for players. The service will allow Nintendo DS gamers in the UK to link up with users across the country, and even the world, to compete against each other. Players have the option to select to play with just friends, or people of a similar skill level around the world without fear of harassment. Players do not have direct communication with each other when playing and therefore personal details or inappropriate comments cannot be exchanged."
The spokesperson went on to tell us the company's line on Pictochat and children's safety, which is this: "Nintendo takes the issue of children receiving messages from strangers very seriously. Children should be warned about receiving messages from, or communicating with, strangers through any medium. For this reason a warning and detailed privacy information are clearly highlighted in the Nintendo DS instruction booklet.
Nintendo also recommends that an adult should assist children with the system set up and instruct them not to use personal information and not to meet strangers or give personal information to anyone as it could be read by a stranger.
It should be noted that PictoChat does not connect to the internet. PictoChat can only be used to communicate with another Nintendo DS within the range of the Nintendo DS's wireless signal, which is approximately 65ft."
These are the facts. Make of them what you will.
If SPOnG's kids were getting funny messages over Pictochat, here's what we would do. We would look around us to try to see who else had a DS within a 65 feet radius. If we saw them, and successfully identified that they had been sending offensive messages to our child, we would batter them with a hammer. Or any heavy object we had to hand. If we couldn't see them we would remove the DS from our child's hands until we had left said area, and report the matter to the authorities. Seems fairly straightforward to us.

You'll know by now how slavishly addicted we are to Pro Evo Soccer, rating it the finest footy game to ever grace a PC or console. Entire lunchtimes, days and even weekends have been sacrificed on the altar of PES as we strive to give it the full 110 percent.
The recent announcement of PES - or Winning Eleven as its known over in the East - for the Nintendo DS has had us all a flutter like the rabid footy addicts we are, as we speculated wildly on how PES might look on the dual-screen device. Even more importantly though, how it might use the handheld's innovative touch screen controls to further our footy future.
We still can't quite tell you that latter component, but we can provide you with a glimpse of what Winning Eleven DS will look actually look like, with first-ever shots emerging following Nintendo's recent DS Lite presentation. Even though they're rather small, you can see the play area's already looking great and it seems the lower screen will be reserved for cunning tactical changes.
No further details for the moment, other than the fact it will use Nintendo's Wi-fi Connection service for some splendid online antics. Still that should more than whet your appetites for the DS footy delights to come. More PES DS kicking off - we hope - soon!

What happens when a popular real-time strategy game for the PC gets ported to the DS... and gets translated into a turn-based title in the process? That's the question in the minds of Age of Empires fans who finally got to check out this reinvention of AoK this past week.
Luckily for fans of Ensemble's work, the reimagining turned out a bit better than they might have hoped, even if the overall 82 out of 100 metascore means it didn't fare much better than its PC big brother. Nevertheless, here are a few scores and review excerpts to make up for past strategic miscues on the platform:
The New York Times (86/100): "Missions are quite interesting, as you seek out holy relics or protect besieged cities. They can also be very difficult, and there were times when after an hour of desperately trying to wipe out the enemy my army would be decimated and my general slain, forcing me to start over with a fresh approach. Fortunately, the varied strategic choices can make a mission play out quite differently a second time."
1UP (8.5/10): "Like the other awesome turn-based strategy game for the DS, Advance Wars Dual Strike, Age of Empires provides the deep, addictive balance of strategy and action that should keep you toting that wee silver clam around with you for weeks."
GamePro (4.0/5): "Age of Empires: The Age of Kings beautifully leverages the DS's unique strength--its interactive touchscreen--to create a truly worthwhile handheld strategy game. With any luck, we're looking at the dawn of a golden age in DS strategy games.... It's not all peaches and cream, of course. Don't be surprised if you occasionally select a unit you didn't intend to select--touchscreens can be finicky like that. And until you learn the ins and outs of the menu system, it's frustratingly easy to end a unit's turn early."
AoE for the DS was developed by the same group of studios that will produce MechAssault for the same device later this year.

Nintendo marketing chief Reggie Fils-Aime appeared on Spike TV's Game Head program yesterday and said that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess would be released at some point in the fall of 2006 and would be a GameCube title only, according to GameCloud.
That's a right bummer.

Nintendo will be dropping the current DS hardware from its line-up in autumn and replacing it entirely with the soon to be launched DS Lite system, according to the firm's US sales and marketing VP Reggie Fils-Aime.
Speaking in a television interview with Spike TV show Game Heads, Fils-Aime confirmed that while the existing DS will continue to be sold alongside the DS Lite for some time, it will be phased out in August or September.
The move is in line with Nintendo's normal approach to revising its hardware; the company rarely stops selling old designs outright at the point when it introduces a new version, instead preferring to give consumers the choice of both versions for a few months after launch.
The DS Lite will be launched in Japan at the start of March in a range of three different colours, with overseas launches in North America and Europe set to follow some time "after spring" according to Nintendo Japan officials.
Fils-Aime also took the opportunity during the interview to reaffirm that full details of the Revolution will emerge during E3 this year, including a launch date for the system - and to state once again that while the much-delayed Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will be appearing in late autumn, it will still be released on the GameCube and not as a Revolution exclusive title.

With various retail cock-ups driving rumours of the long-awaited Zelda: Twilight Princess' release date into the stratosphere the past few weeks, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that the game's scheduled for arrival in the US this "fall" - or "autumn" if you speak proper English.
Speaking on US channel SpikeTV's Game Head programme, the charismatic VP of marketing and stuff clarified the autumn release - almost exactly one year after it's originally announced date - and also confirmed that the game is still GameCube bound, with no plans to make it a Revolution title as some have speculated.
Of course, the next-gen console's backward-compatibility means Revolution owners will still be able to play the game with the minimum of fuss, although whether they'll be able to enjoy enhanced functionality, as previously rumoured, is still unknown. No news on a European release date for the game yet, but it's a fair bet we'll be seeing it in time for the Christmas period this year.

New commercial game for the gamecube released:
Baten Kaitos 2 takes place 20 years prior to the start of the original. You play as Sagi, a member of the empire's "Elite" force of fighters. Sagi heads off on a quest to determine the nature of a mysterious change that's appearing in the world. Actually, you don't play as Sagi like you play as the main characters of other RPGs. You actually play as a spirit that resides within Sagi, an entity that represents Sagi's "true self," and give "advice" to Sagi as the game progresses. The notion of a spirit residing in a character is actually a part of the Baten Kaitos storyline. The world of Baten Kaitos was formed when the living spirits of two separate worlds connected, and people who have spirits within them are considered wise.

Source - Engadget
<blockquote>Thank you for taking a few minutes to chat with me today, I know you have a very busy schedule right now. One of the first things I wanted to ask you about is the new Nintendo DS Lite which was announced in Japan a couple of weeks ago. Is this what the DS should have been when it was first introduced back in 2004?
When the DS was first announced our focus really was on communicating to consumers and to developers the innovation that’s in that unit: two screens, a touch screen, voice activation. And we’ve certainly done that to the tune of multi-millions of units sold across the world. We really a leadership position in every market we compete in versus our competition.
In terms of the physical unit itself, from the day we first showed pictures we’ve been ongoing making tweaks and adjustments, looking to get it as beautiful and as distinctive as possible. What we showed at E3 ended up being different than what we launched with. And certainly what this iteration represents is our ongoing effort to leverage product design to make our innovations and products as attractive as possible.
We will continue to make ongoing adjustments and tweaks to our product design, always with the eye of the consumer in mind.
Does that mean we could probably expect a third iteration of the DS about 18 months from now?
I wouldn’t say that that’s an unreasonable assumption. Look at how many times we’ve improved on the Game Boy Advance in terms of the look, the feel, screen changes, and everything else. We believe that type of constant innovation is critical to driving this industry, and certainly if you look at the world wide sales of Game Boy Advance, I don’t think anyone would disagree.
Have you set a timetable for when the DS Lite will be available here in North America?
We have not announced the date and we won’t be announcing a date for the foreseeable future. We are working through our inventories and our allocations of product and frankly, we are doing everything we can just to meet current demand. Japan has already announced that they will launch in early March and they have the same challenges of meeting that very high level of demand.
We need to make sure that we have enough product in hand for us to launch effectively here in North America and as soon as we feel we are in that position we’ll announce it.
Do you think that announcing this new version so early, before it comes out, risks cannibalizing sales of the current DS?
Yeah, that is certainly a risk. But unfortunately it was a situation that couldn’t be helped in that our Japanese sales have been so strong, we’ve been out of stock essentially since the last few days in December. And that’s what drove us to announce the new design as early as we did so that we could let those consumers know that it was coming.
What sort of response have you gotten to the new Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service for the Nintendo DS?
We feel the launch has gone spectacularly well. We launched Nintendo Wi-Fi connection with advertising that communicated the ease, the accessibility, and the match-up service that allowed consumers to play against people of their own skill level. The launch of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in the U.S., in Japan, and in Europe has been phenomenal. We are on track to break all types of records in terms of number of connections and number of unique users. And the software that we’ve launched is what’s driving really it.
The Tony Hawk title from Activision, our own Mario Kart DS, and Animal Crossing DS and we’re quite excited with the titles coming up. We’ve announced Metroid Prime: Hunters and Tetris DS, both WiFi compatible, both launching on the 20th of March. So we think we’ve launched extremely well, we’re quite happy with the numbers. And quite frankly, we’re prepared to bring out more and more titles to drive the service and ur objective is to get every single consumer to try Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection at least once, that’s our objective.
Now how do you respond to some of the criticisms of the service, like the lack of persistent friends?
Well, a couple of things. First the number of concerns or questions that have been raised by consumers who use the service are extremely modest. I mean we are talking hundredths of a percent of actual connections in terms of any consumers who are saying something negative about the service or the approach.
And the second point, in terms of having to have new friend codes for every game, quite frankly, what that does is put control in the hands of the gamer. So there are some people that I want to let into my house with Animal Crossing and others that I don’t, and that friend code set up allows me to manage that title by title. We think that’s the appropriate way to go.
Where is Nintendo right now with the development of the Revolution?
We have been sharing the controller mechanics with developers across the world. We have shipped over a thousand controller dev kits to developers so that they can begin getting experience with the controller mechanics. The response to the controller has been fantastic. Developers are truly embracing the innovation. They’re embracing the approach and quite frankly, they’re embracing our vision; our vision of creating games that are as sophisticated as the core gamer wants it to be but could also be as straightforward and as accessible as brand new gamers. And that vision, that strategy is what Nintendo is all about. We want to create a system with Revolution that appeals to all types of gamers versus going down a path that, frankly, is a bit exclusionary.
You mean in terms of the competition and what they’re doing?
Exactly. They have gone down a path that is very expensive for consumers, very expensive for developers to create content against, and they're providing a level of horsepower technology that not many consumers want. We in providing to consumers and to developers an approach that is certainly high-tech and certainly powerful enough to create the most sophisticated games, but also has an approach that is open for developers to create whatever type of content they want.
Do you think that not having support for high-definition will put the Revolution at a disadvantage with respect to the PS3 and the Xbox 360?
Not at all. Only a very small percentage of homes currently have high-definition televisions. All of the next-generation systems will look great, but HD games don't look as good on the majority of regular tv's. The question is which one will have amazing new kinds of games with innovative experience. The answer is Revolution.
You must be examining what Microsoft has done with Xbox Live and Xbox Live Arcade. At last year's E3 you announced that Nintendo was going to offer downloads of games from previous consoles directly to the Revolution, but what kind of support for the overall online experience are you building into the console?
Sure. In terms of the details of Virtual Console, how it will work, the titles available, the entire environment and experience, we plan on sharing much of that detail at E3.
Ok.
I’m certainly not going to get into it today but, suffice it to say, the approach we’ve taken with Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which is all about great game play, ease of access, total control in the hands of the consumer and a fantastic experience, all of those principles will be applied to the virtual console. We fully expect that consumers who are exposed to the approach will love it. And we’ll be prepared to share that information at E3.
So networking and all that other stuff will be built into the console?
Well, you’ll see more at E3.
Has the release of Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess been pushed back once again?
No, it has not. We have gone on record that we are launching it in 2006 on GameCube and that is still the plan.
I ask because some retailers are showing June 1, while others are showing May 15. Is that about when we should expect it?
No, we have not told retailers a specific launch date and we’ll be working with all of our key retailers and sharing that information shortly, getting pre-sales set up, and really driving the buzz and the interest in this title in the way our fans want it to be. We know -- and our fans know -- that Zelda certainly will be the biggest and best title ever for GameCube. And we will market it as such and we know the consumers won’t be disappointed.
Speaking of GameCube, if you play a GameCube game on the new Revolution console, will you be able to use the Revolution controller or will you have to use the older style of controller?
Well, all of the GameCube games will be compatible only with GameCube accessories, so whether it’s a WaveBird or whether it’s a wired controller, you’ll only be able to play those titles with those accessories. Essentially what we’re saying is that Revolution titles are the only ones that will leverage the new controller.
Nintendo has said all along that the Game Boy and the DS are of parallel platforms and that the DS is not the next Game Boy, but how long will it be until we see a new Game Boy come out?
You know, that’s a great question better posed to Mr. Iwata. From my perspective, our focus is on driving Nintendo DS, launching the plethora of titles that we have coming up for this platform over the next time period, as well as driving Game Cube successfully until the Revolution launch, as well as driving Game Boy Advance.
We’ve just talked to retailers about some new titles coming for Game Boy Advance; obviously Drill Dozer has just launched and is getting very positive reviews out in the marketplace. Our plan continues to be to support all three lines of our business; the home console, DS, as well as Game Boy Advance.
Do you ever think that having two different portable platforms is confusing for the average consumer, at least from a marketing standpoint?
We have not seen that at all. Consumers understand that Game Boy Advance today really is a mass market platform. The titles available, while there are RPGs and other, more complex games, but certainly what is selling most right now are games targeted to a slightly younger demographic and it’s doing extremely well. DS, with all of the innovation, commands a higher price point and has a variety of different titles to meet those consumer needs. We have not seen any consumer confusion or misunderstanding of exactly what those two platforms are all about.
How have sales of the Game Boy Micro been?
Sales of Game Boy Micro have been exactly where we predicted them to be. It's ten to fifteen percent of total Game Boy Advance sales, targeted against a very specific demographic who want something high image, who want something unique, and that’s exactly where that product has delivered. We continue to sell it and we will continue to sell it for the foreseeable future.
Earlier you touched on the difference in philosophy between Nintendo and Sony and Microsoft. Lately when people from Sony and Microsoft talk about Nintendo, it seems like they're always trying to position the company as creating games solely for a younger demographic. How do you respond to that?
It’s categorically false. I find it quite interesting that our competitors are more interested in trying to pigeonhole us versus articulating a clear strategy amongst themselves that differentiates where they’re trying to do in the marketplace. We have been very clear in our positioning. Nintendo is about innovation and bringing new and unique game play to the consumer -- both the core gamer, as well as new gamers. And we view that mission as critical because as you look at all the demographic data, this industry can no longer rely simply on more and more young men coming of age to try gaming, and being in that, call it ten to twenty year old demographic. The fact is that that demographic is shrinking and the next cohort, their younger brothers, is even smaller.
So, for us, we view it as critical to find new ways to bring gaming to the masses. That means women, as we’ve successfully done with Nintendogs. That means older consumers, as Japan has successfully done with Brain Age and that product’s sequel. That is exactly what we will be doing here in this marketplace, not only with DS, but with Revolution as well: bringing innovation to the marketplace that satisfies the hardest of the hardcore as well as brings new consumers into the marketplace.
Is there an over reliance on Nintendo’s long established franchises and characters, like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, and the others? It seems like we see a new blockbuster franchise like Nintendos with decreasing frequency.
Absolutely not. Nintendo has an enviable position of having the best franchises in this industry in terms of Mario and Zelda and Metroid and Donkey Kong and all of those great franchises. Together those are a library that any developer would kill for. In addition, we have the ability to create new franchises; Nintendogs, a great new franchise and the innovation that’s captured in that software is fantastic.
The Brain Training series is another new genre that has taken Japan by storm and I’m firmly convinced will take the U.S. and Europe by storm. So if anything, what we have seen from Nintendo is an ability to innovate its greatest franchise characters in brand new ways, as well as develop brand new franchises that create million unit selling titles. That’s a very enviable position to be in.
Will we see some brand new franchises for the Revolution?
Yes we will.
Something that will be as big as a Nintendogs or a Zelda?
That is certainly the goal, but you’ll have to tell me when you see it at E3. We will be showing a lot of information about Revolution at E3. You know we’ve said publicly that this year’s E3 will be Revolution’s coming out party. Now, we’ve also been quite clear that there are innovations inherent in Revolution that we will be sharing ongoing. That it is simply not a one time event for us to share information about Revolution and all of its innovation. I have seen blog entries on your site and other sites that criticize us for that, but quite frankly, it’s just good business. In terms of letting the consumer know what’s involved and sharing that information all the way up until launch.
Is Revolution going to be the final name or is it still a code name?
It is still a code name.
Will you unveil the new name at E3?
Maybe. </blockquote>

According to a scan of next month's Nintendo Power, the first original Mario platformer since 2002 (or longer, if you wish to discredit Super Mario Sunshine) will finally be released to the world on May 7th--since this was listed in an official US Nintendo magazine, we're willing to assume this is the American release date.
The new Super Mario Bros. for the DS will launch during the media frenzy we call E3, so any downtime we were hoping for has now completely vanished. Thanks, Nintendo, thanks a lot.

The Legend of Zelda was first released on the Famicon in Japan on February 21st, 1986, twenty years ago today. Defying categorization at the time of its release, it included elements from puzzle, action-adventure and role-playing games and featured an innovative save-game feature when previously games had used password based systems. When Twilight Princess is eventually released, there will be a total of ten core games in the Zelda franchise.
What's your most memorable encounter with Link and his quest to save Princess Zelda from the clutches of evil Ganon?

This morning, Nintendo DS fans got a double shot of good news. The Japanese game giant put a final US release date on New Super Mario Bros., the debut of its long-running, jumping-plumber series on its dual-screen handheld. The all-new platform adventure will arrive in stores stateside on May 7, though pricing and rating have yet to be announced.
New Super Mario Bros. is a polygonal game that is presented from the classic 2D side-scrolling perspective that made Nintendo a household name in the '80s. While the basics may be similar, Mario has a lot more moves than in previous outings, including butt-stomps, backflips, and triangle jumps. The game will also feature new power-ups, like a pump-up mushroom. GameSpot's previous coverage has more details on the game.
If sending diminutive Italian pipelayers airborne isn't your brand of moustache wax, Nintendo also announced an all-new title for the DS today. Titled Magnetica, the puzzle game will have players stop an oncoming onslaught of marbles. They will use the DS stylus to manipulate said marbles into groups of three or more, which will result in said groups vanishing. The game is due in stories on June 5, and GameSpot will have more details as they emerge.

Everyone knows that next-gen games are going to cost more money to make, with a large chunk of that increase due to hiring new employees. Such is the case for n-Space, a game developer based in Orlando, Florida.
The online edition of the Orlando Sentinel is reporting that n-Space, an independent game developer, is nearly doubling its operations. The company, currently about 50 staffers strong, is looking to employ about 20 new artists and programmers before summer. n-Space will also be making more space by adding on 7,000 square feet to its home.
In addition to developing new ties to employees, the company fronted with the little "n" may be fostering a relationship with the big "N." The Sentinel reports that n-Space is developing games for Nintendo's next-gen console, code-named Revolution. No details on the game were released, and no official announcement has been made. n-Space's last project was the Nintendo GameCube-exclusive Geist.

Those of you trying to keep up with the progress of Mother 3's passage to Game Boy Advance will be pleased by the latest update to Shigesato Itoi's website on the subject: a Mother 3 Game Boy Micro deluxe package!
The special edition Micro features a Mother 3 faceplate, a copy of the game, and a Franklin Badge - one of the in-game items from Mother 2, better known to Westerners (and often as not the source of all this excitement) as Earthbound.
If you're Japanese, and a limited edition loving Japanese person at that, you can expect to find the Mother 3 package available in small quantities from March 1st, priced 18,000 yen (EUR 127 / GBP 86).
Perhaps even more exciting though is the way that the Famicomaniacs (to borrow one of their terms) at fansite Starmen.Net have taken it upon themselves to set up and maintain a running English translation of Itoi's Japanese language site. If there's a heaven, that is where these people are going.

Sales of the Brain Training series have surpassed the million mark in Japan so it isn’t a surprise that other companies are jumping into the action. Hudson has three titles in their newly created puzzle series set for a release on March 23rd at a budget price of 2,940円 ($25). The first game is a touch screen jigsaw puzzle. You can drag puzzle pieces with the stylus into place and race against the clock for a challenge. The crossword puzzle game has a neat feature, it lets you write kana using the stylus. The last entry in the series is the math puzzle game Sudoku. With the popularity of Sudoku rising in the USA maybe some company will try to localize the last game for the US audience if Brain Flex sales are strong. Game screens below.

Nintendo has declined to address online reports that DS Lite will launch in Europe on August 16th priced EUR 129.99, but a UK retail source speaking to GamesIndustry.biz told us we can expect to see it sooner than that.
The August 16th date apparently centres on information from German retail outlets. Reacting this morning, a Nintendo UK spokesperson declined to comment "on rumour and speculation".
However, according to our source, that date is "way off". "We'll see it sooner than that," he assured us.
Nintendo DS Lite goes on sale in Japan on March 2nd. Last week Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the launch would be supported by shipments of 500,000 in the first two weeks and up to one million for the whole of March.
Speaking to Spike TV show Game Heads recently, Nintendo's US sales and marketing VP Reggie Fils-Aime said the original DS could then be phased out later in the year

Well, seeing as the Nintendo news and rumours we’ve been hearing about this week have mostly been fairly negative (i.e. Zelda slips again), we thought we’d give you a few positive ones mixed in with some hardcore, old-fashioned facts to add a little more sweetness to an otherwise drab and grey Wednesday.
Respected Wired magazine contributor and author of a number of good books on gaming, Chris Kohler, reminded us yesterday not to be too dismayed by the news that Zelda: Twilight Princess has slipped back to the end of the year.
As he sagely advises: “Get over it. Remember when it was normal for Nintendo games to be delayed a year? You couldn't wake up in the morning without finding out that a Nintendo game just got pushed back twelve months. Let's not fret.”
Wise words mate. But what are we to do in the meantime? The PS3 might come out in Spring 2007 if we are lucky. The Xbox 360 sits in the corner of the lounge gathering dust, awaiting something to justify the excessive amount of money we’ve all gone and spent on the goddamn buzzy brick. The DS in our bag is already looking like an old toy we are now even more than slightly embarrassed about pulling out on public transport. And the Revolution, it seems, will not be (high-def) televised. It’s all doom and gloom innit?
Well, no. Clearly. And as Mr Kohler reminded us, cheering us up no end: “let's just enjoy the fact that New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS just got an official release date, and it's soon: May 7... Many people have pointed out that May 7 is a Sunday, but nearly every other Nintendo title is always released on a Tuesday. What gives? Can't help but notice that Sunday is the preferred day for hardware launches, and May 7 -- just before E3 -- might be an opportune time to have the DS Lite take its bow.”
Of course! It all makes sense! If we’ve all finally got our mitts on a DS Lite and New Super Mario Bros the week before E3, then what else is anybody going to be talking about at the show but this? Add that it also makes more sense, in light of breaking news regarding Nintendo’s plans to have up to a million DS Lites produced for the Japanese launch next month and recent comments from Nintendo UK execs regarding the European launch being ‘way earlier than August’.

Bafio has updated his Wifi Chat App, heres the details:
Version 0.8 beta
Too many changes to remember, but among the others:
* DNS client working.
* It's now possible to connect using both wifi settings from wifitransfer and the firmware settings
* The server has option to upload a message log to an FTP server, locally serve them or save them to a local directory. HTML files are automatically generated (still in devel.)
* Touch screen code takes into account the pressure of the pen
* Keyboard (yes, I know it's not so good)
* Status
* User list (limited to 18 users now)
TODO:
* too much but probably:
user list, receiving messages in menu, more menu, user settings, webcam (not on DS I'm afraid)...
KNOWN BUGS:
* The chat uses your user name from the personal settings. Only latin characters are supported now, so you will have problems publishing your messages, and possibly connecting, if your name uses foreign characters or symbols.
* The servers have some problems updating the message list
* Very rarely the applications seems to freeze. I still have to figure out why this happens, but I'll invastigate. You can just restart the app it this happens.

Pokémon's new slogan may be "Gotta ride them all." The popular game franchise well known for creating a frenzy among children and spawning an anime series, trading cards, and a spoof on South Park, found another medium to infiltrate last year when Nintendo unveiled a Pokémon-themed amusement park to coincide with the World Expo held in Nagoya, Japan. The temporary amusement destination attracted 4.5 million visitors during its six-month existence.
Now it appears as though Pikachu and others will be returning in the form of spinning rides, Ferris wheels, and other carnival-like contraptions. Nintendo is bringing back the Pokémon Park starting this June in Taiwan, according to the AFP news agency.
The park will take residence in various sites for three-month stints, with a goal of drawing 1 million visitors at each stop. Other locations said to be possible destinations include the US, Europe, and Shanghai.

Hi, them.
Because DATEL didn't make ProActionReplay, I made. Name is .. Project-DipStar-
It applied MKDS-Patch.
It reads cheat-code which was stored in the SRAM.
(MAX 126 codes / 4 pages)
To use, PassMe(or PassKey) and FlashCart are necessary. PassMe,PassKey,PassKey2 or MAGICKEY/MK2 is good! But, EZ-PASS,SUPERPASS or PassMe2 is bad..
Moreover, the FlashCart which doesn't use a loader is necessary. EZ-FLASH or USBLine is good! M3,G6,SuperCard,GBALink,etc... is bad..
If succeeding...
Of course, it is possible to do parameter search, too.
Don't you, too, challenge?

Welcome to the new site. All's pretty much the same, except I have new forums which don't require registration to post. Also, I threw together a new game last night, CrossPics, it's a picross/nonogram style game with very buggy touchscreen controls. Check out the link to the left.

IGN's hearing from studio insiders that Revolution SDKs are selling for about $2,000, "which is thousands of dollars cheaper than a PSP SDK, let alone an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 one," paving the way for riskier titles with smaller investments to appear on Nintendo's next system.
Citing the 1,000-dev-kits-shipped statistic from the recent Engadget interview with Reggie Fils-Aime, IGN Revolution went ahead and talked to "a half dozen studios around the globe for further details about the nature of the kits." Apparently, "three revisions of the development kits have been sent out to studios" so far, with "minor tweaks" and boosts in power (to a GameCube with wired Revolution controller attached) accounting for the different versions. Larger, more committed publishers may already have access to updated hardware and a wireless remote.
An "official fourth SDK prototype" will soon be sent out so the likes of EA and Ubisoft can start getting their playable demos ready for E3, but final dev kits aren't "expected to be made widely available" until June. While this doesn't change the consensus that the Rev will only be "roughly twice as powerful" as the 'Cube, at least this similarity in architecture will make development of next-gen titles easier (and more exciting with the innovative new controller). A $150-$200 price tag would certainly help the system's marketability as well. The proof will be in the playable pudding.

Nintendo has dismissed rumours that the stand shown in pictures of the Revolution will double as its power supply, telling Eurogamer that said rumours are, well, rubbish.
The claim first appeared in Nintendo Official Magazine - but according to a Nintendo spokesperson, "It was a small production error in the magazine."
"We have not announced any details of the Nintendo power supply at this time," the spokesperson added.
The stand shown in the pics is just a stand, it seems - which makes sense, since we know you'll be able to position the Revolution either horizontally or vertically. As for the power supply, guess we'll just have to wait till E3 for more info...

Nintendo has unveiled full details of the modes we can expect to see in Tetris DS when it's released in April.
Standard mode is based on classic Tetris gameplay - you drop blocks and form lines to score points, in other words. And while you're busy with that, Mario will be running and jumping his way around various levels from Super Mario Bros. in the background.
Then there's Mission mode, which has a Legend of Zelda theme and sees you racing against the clock to complete objectives. The Metroid-themed Catch mode is all about guiding blocks so they land on a big floating pile and form 4 by 4 squares - at which point they'll explode.
Puzzle mode features Yoshi and tasks you with solving around 200 tough Tetris puzzles using just a few blocks. There's no time limit this time - you just tap the blocks on the touch screen to change which way up they're pointing, and then drop them into place.
In Touch mode, you use the stylus to move a big pile of blocks around and create horizontal lines. There's a Balloon Fight theme, and once again, no time limit.
And finally there's Push mode, which features our old friend Donkey Kong. Here you have to clear two rows of blocks simultaneously, thereby shoving them onto your opponent's pile. Whoever's pile hits the top of the screen first is the loser.
It all sounds rather exciting, really - especially when you remember that a generously designed game sharing option will allow up to 10 players to compete using only a single cartridge, and that you'll be able to battle it out online via the Wi-Fi Connection service. Roll on April 21st.

JimmyL has updated his puzzler for the DS, heres the news:
I've updated the game a few times over the evening in some attempts to make the touchscreen code more stable, it's definitely improved since yesterday, but it's still not perfect, random presses still happen. Also, at least one of those builds had a bug that set the top row clues to zero... probably making some puzzles impossible or at least look different, sorry for any trouble that may have caused.
I'll post the source for the game on the weekend, once I've cleaned it up a bit.

The Simple DS series, despite being not as simple price-wise as its PS2 sister series, already has five entries out at Japanese retail, with no signs of a slowdown. The latest Famitsu is home to the announcement of two new entries.
First up is Simple DS Series Vol.7 The Illust Puzzle & Suuji Puzzle. The Japanese translates to "The Illustration Puzzle and Number Puzzle," although both of the included puzzle types actually involve numbers. The "Number Puzzle" mode seems to be a mini version of Sudoku. Digital Ware is developing this title, which is set for Japanese release in April.
Vol.5 The Trump will follow the release of Vol.7. Seventeen card games are included in this entry, which is being developed by Vanguard Works. A Japanese release is set for June.
Both games offer multiplayer play for up to four players. This includes download play, so those without the games will be able to take part in the simple fun.
Acute readers will note that there's somewhat of a conflict in the numbering for the Simple DS series titles. Vol.5 The Tennis has now been changed to Vol.XX The Tennis, with the XX to be replaced by a number at a later date.

Only Crystal White will be available on launch day. The two other colors are supposed to come out on March 11. I repeat for tired eyes and those who were not focused yet: no cool Ice Blue, no savvy Enamel Navy, only pure Crystal White available at Nintendo DS Lite debut."

Why they are coming out with the Revolution 4 or 5 months ps3 and almost a year after the 360 ? did they not think that sony and microsoft were gonna make systems? also why have they still not annouced the release of twilight Princess it is gonna be cubes biggest game and they have delayed for months already.
And revolution is gonna have problems selling. Half the Speed and Graphics of Ps3 and 360. They would go out of buiness without the controler. And it is a gamble! what are they thinking? It seems like its a good idea but if it costs more then 275 i dont think itll sell
So nintendo needs to hurry up and get these games done faster or they will lose alot of money. They need to set deadlines and meet them no rescedualing no whining get off your lazy a and get to work

You know the old saying about buses, well heres a mass of new Nintendo DS Commercial Releases and some killer games amongst them, all of these were posted at Success HK (one of the worlds best importers):
Age of Empires: The Age of Kings US ver.
Age of Empires: The Age of Kings boasts turn-based strategy gameplay as players move from the Dark Ages through the Middle Ages with one goal in mind: domination of the known world. Command one of five different civilizations: the Britons, Franks, Mongols, Saracens, or Japanese in this Nintendo DS game. Lead over 45 different types of units into battle -- from bowmen and monks to hand cannoneers, mercenaries and samurai, and control special 'hero' units such as Richard the Lionheart, Robin Hood, Joan of Arc and Genghis Khan, whose special 'hero' powers affect the entire battlefield. The DS version allows players to construct and upgrade buildings to help their units learn new skills and create resources for their civilizations, as well as research over 50 technologies to advance their civilization. Multi-player scenarios allow up to four players to wirelessly battle each other.
Unou no Tatsujin Soukai! Machigai Museum Jap ver.
Your goal in this puzzle game is to identify differences in images on the top and bottom screen. The game offers over 10 puzzle forms, including scrolling images, images that have to be scratched with the touch pen in order to reveal hidden areas, and even a mode where you have to blow into the microphone in order to clear falling leaves from atop an image. Based on how well you perform, the game rates your judgement, concentration and memory skills. Support for two to four players via download play is included.
Syunkan Pazzloop Jap ver.
Seiken Densetsu DS Children of Mana Jap ver.
Part of the "World of Mana" project, this game is a 2D RPG follow-up to the adored action-RPG series. Embark on a co-op multiplayer quest, teaming together to achieve actions and reach areas, by helping players up or working together, that are not available for single-player adventurers. Children of Mana features a complex weapon system where you can equip multiple weapons for range and melee attack. Also featured is character modification, where you can adjust your character's abilities on the fly by applying items.

I started making a new firmware, and you can download on http://zzo38computer.cjb.net/fwnitro.zip. It doesn't do much yet, but you can see what it does do. I got an example and changed a few things. Can anyone help me how to do the rest, anyways?
Press up/down to move cursor, left/right to adjust, select to select, start to go back to previous menu, L to swap LCDs.

Mick has posted this:
Xor is a re-make of an original game by Astral Software and Logotron. They entirely own all copyrights to the game design and mechanics. I am not trying to rip anyone off with this remake, particularly since I am distributing it via the internet for free. Other re-makes of Xor are also available so I figure that anyone involved with the original game are either unaware of the newer versions, or don't care since nobody is trying to make any money from the game.

Could this be a start of an explosion of homebrew for the DS, theres Hundreds of Lua Releases for the PSP, heres what the coder waruwaru posted:
You don't know C/C++, but you want to write some programs for your DS? Well, learn Lua and write scripts to run using DSLua! Here is version 0.1 (preview build) for you to play with. Version 0.1 supports some basic text functions, and functions to read dpads/stylus input. Currently it will only work with devices support by Chishm's FAT driver (devices like GBA Movie Player and M3 CF) though. Enjoy!

Our resident coder here at DCEMU, GPF has posted some news and screenshots of his continued progress with the port of Frodo the Commodore 64 Emulator for the DS, heres the news from him:
I'v gotten .d64 support working now in the c64 emulator, so now I can use snapshots created with the pc version of Frodo, as well as load .d64 disk images.
.t64 tape support isnt currently working because I havent been able to find a portable fscanf function, and/or figure out how to convert the following code.
Still have sound to fix, and couple issues with the onscreen keyboard. Next will be to figure out a menu for selecting options and .d64 images to mount etc.

Carmex has released a new app for the DS thats a handwriting recognition program, heres the info:
<blockquote>DSmerlin is a port of the open source XMerlin handwriting recognition project. It should be fairly easy to incorporate into other homebrew projects such as notepads, calendars, IM software, etc. Anywhere data entry is needed, DSMerlin can provide an alternative to the standard on-screen keyboards. </blockquote>

Seddy recently released a rather unique game for the DS, heres what he posted:
"A few weeks ago, I started experimenting with 3d and now, here is my first 3d game!. In this game, you have to tilt the world with your Stylus, to make the marble roll from A to B. I made this way harder, because I have added some special fields:
Grey: The marble rolls slower.
Yellow: The marble bounces away.
Jump-pad: You get a little boost that makes you jump.
You have to look out, that the marble don't falls down from the world, or that your time runs out. At the moment, the game has 10 levels.

Dumbstart posted this news:
Here’s my first program for the Nintendo DS, Nameless Matching Game. It’s certainly a work in progress but for now it’s simple enough for a limited release. The object of the game is to touch matching squares as quickly as possible. You race against the clock to get the highest score possible. It only has 10 (very simple) levels at this time but more are to come along with different gameplay modes so check back often.
Enjoy the game and please reserve judgement until a later date when the game has had a chance to simmer for a while. I have a few other programs that I’m working on for the DS and hope to release something a little more fully developed in the future. I do all of my DS development using PAlib using a SuperCard SD on a FlashMe‘d DS. So everything I release will be compatible with the SuperCard and once I get a new Compact Flash reader I’ll ensure it works on the GBAMP too.

[Screen Lights] Rewrote the code, shouldn't break the sound anymore
[Arm7] Switched to libnds's IRQ system, now works better on MK2/3
[PA3D] Compiles again, sorry !
[Backgrounds] Optimised the Background memory error messages

DS has made stars out of lawyers and doctors recently with Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center, but soon the Nintendo handheld will be demonstrating the work of a much less respectable professional in Rousseau the Thief.
The Namco-developed game has a similar anime style to Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center, and makes similarly innovative use of the stylus and the touch-screen; in order to keep Rousseau hidden from the law, gamers will have to draw patterns on his face in order to make him blend in with the background.
So as long as Rousseau stands in front of plain brickwork he should be fine, but if he attempts to blend in with something a little more complicated, like a map of Norway, he might be in trouble.
Rousseau the Thief will be released for DS, with a UK release date to be announced

Everything else is touch-screen nowadays. Why not Nintendo and their unique controller? EA spokesperson, Trudy Muller, let out an interesting comment regarding the Revolution controller.
“The beauty of the new Revolution controller is that the possibilities for new game ideas are limitless. I’m sure that Nintendo already has a number of phenomenal design concepts built around 3D Pointing or Touch Sensitivity for their 1st party games. Our developers are inspired and excited by the new controller’s features.”
Speculation have already been flying throughout the Nintendo world and some potential mockups have already been made. Addition of a DS-style panel to the controller? Maybe another accessory that attaches to the controller? Probably won’t know anything for sure until E3, but we will keep you posted.

Though they weren't due until next month, an avid Flickr user has discovered that the Nintendo DS download stations are already operational in the Nintendo World Store in New York City. After enterting the store and hitting "Download Play" in the DS' main menu, she grabbed a trial version of Brain Age, strangely ignoring the presence of Tetris DS.
It shouldn't be too long now before the download stations roll out to the rest of the US and bathe countless gamers in free software, videos and deadly Wi-Fi radiation. If you see these glorious structures appearing in your area, let us know!

ETK has posted this update on his site:
Today I have changed the collision engine (I didn't really like the other one)which fixes some bugs and improves the precision. Now the code is in more than 1 file, which makes it easier to read.
Since Collision engine is almost done, I have started the weapon/shots engine also and made a simple debugger which shows which sprite is available to use with the "new shot".

Lik Sang have done a great hands on feature of the new Nintendo DS Lite, heres some screens and info:
Let there be Lite. Lik Sang has today received its very first Nintendo DS Lite, which has been shining in our office since this morning (literally). In this report hereafter, we take the bad boy for a ride through one of our traditional hands-on reports, warming up for the real release that happens in a couple of days. Please note that we have only received one sample unit so far, we have not received the final delivery yet and a more detailed news article will follow once the Nintendo DS Lite officially hits the streets after March 2.
Latest rumors on the ground mention that only 93.000 pieces will make it for the debut, only a third of the originally planned 280.000, after two colors got postponed to 11th of March. That's very short indeed, even less than the Japanese PSP or the US Xbox 360 at launch, and god knows they were hard to get already. Taking into consideration the fact that Nintendo DS is a hot piece of machinery that has been "sold out" everywhere in Japan for the last two months, it is now certain that all hell will break loose on March 2nd. Supply will not meet demand once again, there is never enough of the good stuff on day-one. Big N is reportedly having plans to flood the market with a total of 1 million DS Lites before the end of March in the Land of the Rising Sun but we are not yet convinced if that will even prove to be sufficient.
"Smaller, lighter, brighter" was the motto so far. Now, you can officially add whiter, cooler, prettier, sleeker, and overall better to your arsenal of superlatives when describing the Nintendo DS Lite in comparison with the first edition of the Nintendo DS. The new edition has for sure a fashionable look, and appears more modern than the previous model, which many compared to a "cheap plastic toy from the 20th century" when it first came out (not that we would agree with them!). Nintendo has adopted the transparent see-through layer of plastic that comes on top of a product casing to give it a shinier look (like with the PSP or the iPod for instance). I must admit I also find the white color to be much trendier and more appealing than the original Silver painting there was on the early NDS when it first was put in my palms in November 2004. All in all, a well done piece of hardware is what it is.
From the firmware side of things, we haven't noticed any differences. The brightness is controlled using the same icon that was used to switch the light on and off in the past, and the menu of course still features English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German and Italian languages and comes 100% region free for all games.

A patent filed by Nintendo with the US Patent Office last year has come to light this week and kicked off speculation of a possible functionality upgrade for the Nintendo DS, as it describes a new control system for a dual-screen console with a touch interface.
The patent, which was uncovered by US website GameSpot, describes a console not dissimilar to the DS, but with one key difference - namely the ability to sense multiple pressure points on the touch-screen, rather than just a single point as the DS currently does.
What that means, in effect, is that players would be able to control games with gestures using more than one finger on the screen - with the example given in the patent being the control of a spaceship on the upper screen using two fingers on the lower screen to indicate direction and thrust.
The concept isn't exactly an entirely new one; other companies have explored the idea of two-fingered gestures before, and Apple's recent laptops allow users to scroll around documents and perform other actions by using two fingers on the touchpad.
However, the implementation of the system as a game controller is, to the best of our knowledge, a first - and could indeed point at an enhancement that could appear in any successor to the DS at some point down the line.

Super Princess Peach marks a big plot reversal for the world of Super Mario Bros. Bowser, in his infinite wisdom, has kidnapped Mario, leaving Princess Peach little choice other than to fight her way through scores of Bowser's minions in an attempt to free the red-clothed plumber. Key differences in gameplay from previous Mario platformers include emotional superpowers (obviously feeding off the stereotype that women can be more emotional than men), an umbrella used as a weapon (Peach isn't heavy enough to kill enemies by jumping on them) with a bunch of mini-games along the way.
Planet Gamecube (80/100) by Unknown - this review gives the impression that Super Princess Peach is a quality Nintendo platformer, but one that's a little on the easy side. In fact "the easiness is really the only thing that should dissuade a purchase, but it's not so easy it's terrible". According to the self-described "hardcore Mario fan" reviewer, the game doesn't reward skilled players as much as he/she would like, but we're pretty sure the majority of players won't care about this.
IGN (78/100) by Craig Harris - again, a feeling that the game is too easy is the reviewer's main criticism of the game. For example "Nintendo goes completely out of its way to spoon-feed the player, going so far as to nearly spell out the solution to every boss battle before the player enters the fight." We'd imagine that would get annoying, fast.
Gamespot (72/100) by Ryan Davis - this review brings up something that was at the back of my mind since the mentioning of "emotional superpowers". "There's something rather sexist about the idea that Princess Peach's big secret weapon is that she can get really overly emotional at the drop of a hat" (emphasis added). We've got to ask our female audience; what do you feel about this feature? The review concludes on the note that Super Princess Peach is a great introduction for rookies to the world of 2D platformers, but if you're looking for the next Super Mario Bros. you better wait until Mario Bros DS is released.

I am currently developing DSerial which is going to be a debug cable and more. It has an integrated 8051 microcontroller that can be programmed for specific applications. USB, serial and I/O ports allow using this device for a range of ideas. An obvious application would be a debug console and perhaps even GDB support. Serial port allows to connect GPS receivers, motor controllers and other gadgets equipped with UART or RS-232 serial port. 18 I/O lines enable electronics enthusiasts to connect various projects that could use the power of two ARM CPUs. Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) is useful for a range of sensors and simple oscilloscope projects. There’s also a 2D tilt sensor (optional) that could be used in homebrew games like Marble Madness clones (please make this ).
I haven’t tested the hardware yet, but below are some pictures of the current state.

Kuwanger has been improving his own version of Pogoshell from the 2.0b3 source, and has now merged in support for EZ and XROM carts from the WIP sources.
He's fixed the crippling 32 file limit for a folder, and added additional features such as an inbuilt JPEG renderer that supports encrypted JPEGs. Hidden folders that are opened using a key combination are also added.
