Wii U sales are up by almost 125 per cent last week, retail sources have told MCV.
The rise in sales was due to the launch of Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate, plus HMV cutting the price of the Premium console by £140.
Monster Hunter accounted for almost half of the revenue generated by Wii U software during that week.
The following week (last week) saw the launch of LEGO City Undercover for Nintendo's platform, and although that has had little impact on Wii U hardware sales, Wii U software sales has increased significantly.
The improved performance follows criticism from retail over the console’s poor performance, with stores threatening to reduce store space. Nintendo has since promised to speak to concerned retailers and reveal their plans to 'build momentum' for the console.
Despite the sales spike, Wii U still lags behind PS3 and 360.

Here’s a build that just exudes nerd cred. It’s , straight from the workshop of [lyberty5].
The build began by stealing a controller from a PAL SNES and carefully dremeling the buttons and d-pad loose from their plastic frame. The PCB was cut in half, and the remaining plastic was carefully crafted into round speaker enclosures with the help of some epoxy. hot glue, and possibly a few pieces of styrene.
The result is a perfectly formed pair of SNES headphones, with a build quality right up there with the best case mods we’ve seen. Unfortunately, while the buttons are still attached to the PCB, they don’t do anything. We’re thinking a small Bluetooth adapter – or even repurposing a set of Bluetooth headphones with volume and play controls – would be a wonderful use for the 20-year-old, candy-like buttons.
Still, an awesome build, and [lyberty5] really shows off his craft by constructing these wonderful headphones. You can see the time-lapse of the build after the break.

Elementary school age boys target of cross-media blitz for Gaist Crusher; 3DS game will feature anime, toy, music, and manga tie-ins
[h=3]Capcom[/h]capcom-europe.com
With the Mega Man series effectively mothballed in recent years, Capcom has a child-sized gap in its portfolio. The publisher is looking to fill that gap this year, as today it announced a new intellectual property aimed at elementary school age boys, Gaist Crusher.
Gaist Crusher will debut as a 3DS game with a bevy of supporting tie-in projects. The game will see an anime project from the studio behind Naruto and Bleach, Pierrot Co., Ltd. It will also see a line of toys from Bandai, manga series in Saikyo Jump and V Jump, and music produced by Avex Entertainment.
Described by Capcom as a "custom armor action" game, Gaist Crusher is intended to combine the outfit's experience making Mega Man content for kids with the multiplayer focus of its Monster Hunter franchise.
"With the number of children in Japan declining, Capcom plans to use this project to attract interest in new brands and firmly establish these brands by continuously launching a diverse range of content," according to the publisher.
Gaist Crusher for the 3DS is set to launch this winter.

Orion's Odyssey is the second Nintendo DS game to seek funding assistance through Kickstarter, following the successful use of the platform as a pre-order campaign for Jason Rohrer's Diamond Trust of London.
Developed by Island Officials, the team of board game enthusiasts behind semi-obscure DS release Hands On! Tangrams, Orion's Odyssey is a "comedy-puzzle game" about a handy robot and his seven-year-old friend, who have adventures on the top screen while solving pattern block puzzles on the bottom screen, arranging differently-shaped blocks to fill each puzzle's shape.
Island Officials originally planned to find a publisher for Orion's Odyssey, but to no avail. "While they all had great things to say about our game and our efforts, they wanted to move away from Nintendo DS to other digital markets including the new 3DS system, as well as mobile phones and tablets," the developer writes.
The team found a publisher willing to take on the plum deal of helping get the game through submission if Island Officials covered all production costs, and so it's asking for precisely $85,412 on Kickstarter.

Shin Megami Tensei 4, the first new numbered MegaTen game in nearly a decade, is coming to North American 3DSs this summer both as a retail title and digital eShop download, publisher Atlus has announced. This latest entry in the series revolves around a group of samurai fighting demons. As with other games in the series, demons can be recruited to fight alongside you and this fourth entry will feature over 400 of the buggers along with StreetPass functionality and fully voiced dialogue. As with 2003's Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne (released in 2005 as Lucifer's Call in Europe), Shin Megami Tensei 4 will feature the turn-based "Press Turn" combat system in which exploiting an enemy's weakness can result in extra turns.Sadly, no European release has been announced, but given that the game is digitally distributed it seems especially likely that it will make the leap across the pond.

Nintendo's new eShop prepaid cards aren't just used to purchase content on 3DS, they also are content on 3DS. Nintendo is releasing a series of Mario-themed eShop cards, that also work as AR cards with a new Mario photo app made by the Galaxy/Super Mario 3D Land team.
Each denomination comes on a card representing one of two characters: ¥1,000 Goomba or Koopa cards, ¥2,000 Mario or Luigi, or ¥3,000 Bowser or Peach. The 3D models generated by the app show up in photos based on where the cards are placed, just like other photos done with AR cards, and can be posed in different positions and with added effects. Like the Kid Icarus AR Cards, two characters will interact with one another when placed together.
Nintendo of America has yet to make any announcements, of either the cards or the Photo Together Super Mario app. We recommend waiting – you don't want to buy eShop credit you can't use, just to interact with an app you can't download.

Pissed is a very well designed but disgusting homebrew game by Nuance and Genesis Project for Wii, where you have to urinate into a toilet while suffering from a specific amount of alcohol in your blood. The amount of bloodalcohol raises with each level, which makes it considerably harder each time, to hit the middle. The game is being played with a Wii-Mote and the player shall hold it in an “authentic” position. With this concept “Pissed” possibly qualifies for the best unofficial Wii party game in the category fun games for 2013. Shocked or not, give it a try!

A few months ago we told you about a hacker named Neimod working on the hack of the 3DS. It has already accomplished a monumental task in order to identify possible flaws but nothing concrete has emerged so far. 3dbrew The site, known to be frequented by many hackers whose Neimod , warns us against the new update deployed by Nintendo on the 3DS.

Square Enix has released the first video of Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut on the Wii U.
The publisher describes it as the ultimate edition of the popular sci-fi action RPG. It comes replete with a host of changes – not least of which are the alterations made to the infamous boss battles.
"We went through all the boss battles and said, 'let's just start from the beginning’,” designer Emile Pedneault toldEurogamer. "We took the whole experience Deus Ex gave you and we applied it correctly to the boss fights."
Changes include alterations to the map layouts of each boss encounter providing new scope for avoiding detection where previously there was none. The option to not kill the bosses, however, cannot be offered although players will be able to down them without firing a shot should they choose.
Another key change comes with the ability for two energy cells to recharge automatically. In the original game only one would recharge. The idea is to allow gamers more room for experimentation and fun with augmentations.
The AI is also improved, utilising the tweaks that are only available to existing owners who played The Missing Link DLC. Also applied to the whole game are the visual tweaks, such as improved light/dark contrast and anti-aliasing.
Crucially, these improvements are apparently not even possible on Xbox 360 because of DVD storage limits.
As to whether this additional content will make it to other systems – it’s a strict no comment for the time being.

XSeed Games has finally confirmed a Pandora's Tower release date of April 16. The Japanese RPG adventure was developed exclusively for Wii in Japan by Ganbarion in conjunction with Nintendo, where it was released in May 2011.It wasn't until almost a year later that the game's Japan-exclusivity ended with aNintendo-published EU and Australian release in April 2012.XSEED Games picked up US publishing duties earlier this year, giving what is likely to be the Wii's last major release a definitive Stateside release date. Here's the official plot summary: "Pandora's Tower takes the familiar maiden in distress theme and turns it on its head, asking the protagonist to slay over a dozen giant monsters and collect their flesh in order to lift a curse that has befallen his lover."The game opens in the Kingdom of Elyria, where an unassuming singer named Elena succumbs to a wretched curse during a festival performance. Bearing an arcane mark on her back, she begins a seemingly irreversible transformation into a cursed monster. It comes to pass that only the brave Aeron, a young ex-soldier whose heart has forever been pledged to Elena, can save her."

Change log (vbeta 8):
*** OLD_COUNT IS NOW DISABLED. THE CPU EMULATION TIMING HAS CHANGED, HOPEFULLY FOR THE BETTER. PLEASE RE-TEST YOUR GAMES. ***
* Sleeps when the lid is closed during emulation.
* Adds quick saved-state creation and loading hotkeys.
* Writes a .sav file to storage 10 frames (1/6 of a second) after it's done being written to the emulated GBA's save area.
* FPS counter! Now you can see how many frames you get per second! Yay!Beta 6 (03/30/13) - Reading .bmp files in TEMPGBA/SYSTEM/GUI is much faster at startup. This is a card-speed dependent optimisation.
- Avert a crash in the saved states interface when touching a delete cell.
- Preserves the position inside submenus until you return to the game.
- "Save a screenshot" now works when touched.
- Responds to quick repeated button presses better in the menu. (e.g. when you press B madly to exit submenus)
- Increased button auto-repeat from 1/5 second to 1/20 second, with the first auto-repeat after half a second. Helps with larger ROM folders and cheat packs.
- Stop some text rendering oddities in the recently played games submenu.

GBA.js Git (2013/04/03) is released. Jeffrey Pfau released a new GameBoy Advance emulator. The project began last July. The first prototype took him five weeks. But it has worked for several weeks and several hours a day online prior to the first public version. The program runs on JavaScript. It is available online and works in a modern web browser. It runs on Chrome 20, Safari 6.0, Firefox 15 + (without sound) or Opera 12. It should also run on Internet Explorer 10. Firefox and Opera are particularly slow, it is better to use Safari or Chrome.
As a matter of law, no rom is provided on the official website. However, you can load these roms on your machine. The emulator does not handle compressed files. So please only download roms decompressed. The application sometimes crashes if the file has special characters.
Currently all parts of the GameBoy Advance hardware are implemented. You can save and load backups, send on your machine or your machine. GBA.js is able to take screenshots. It can set the emulation paused. It supports games containing real-time clocks (eg Pokemon).
GBA.js Git Changelog:
* Add basic support for reading states
http://jpfau.github.com/gbajs/
* Add basic support for multiplayer state
* Begin SIO
* Minor cleanup, removing dead code

The Wii U version of disappointing Gearbox game Aliens: Colonial Marines has missed its launch window, but publisher Sega won't explain what's going on or whether the game is still in development at all.In January, Sega told Eurogamer that Aliens: Colonial Marines would arrive on Wii U by 31st March. That date marked the end of the Wii U's launch window. When we asked Sega this morning where the game was and whether it would ever see the light of day, the publisher responded with "no comment".That's a suspiciously vague remark, given that Sega was happy enough to quash rumours in February about the game being cancelled."It's not true," said a Sega representative back then. "We haven't announced the release date for it yet but that's it."Aliens: Colonial Marines arrived in February for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. And like a french kiss from one of its xenomorphs, the game was mauled by Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead in our 3/10 review.Since then, a number of patches have arrived to improve the game, including a multitude of bug fixes and tweaks to solve some of the most pressing criticisms. A Wii U version with all of these fixes would likely receive a warmer reception.

via http://www.romhacking.net/
Having learned some of the history of Nintendo’s classic old 8-bit system and how the company tried to enforce content controls through its licensing scheme, the unlicensed games that somehow managed to escape this censorship always seemed rather fascinating. As might be expected, a lot of these “unofficial” games were just about as low-brow and sleazy as the Nintendo’s publicists warned us they would be. A remarkable number of them, including the subject this latest experiment, Idol Shisen Mahjong, featured pictures of naked women.
As many half-witted humorists have already pointed out, if pictures of naked women are all one wants, enormous sections of the internet are dedicated to nothing else. The pictures in these old games are interesting not so much because of their blatant appeal to players’ baser instincts, but simply because they are pictures someone saw fit to adapt to the system’s primitive 8-bit color scheme. With some effort, it seemed one could turn these old games to more truly artistic purposes; hence the decision to hack a game that was already a hack of another game (AVE’s Tiles of Fate, in case anybody is asking).
Whereas most of these old play-for-the-pretty-pictures games were either ridiculously easy to win (AV Poker comes to mind) or else well-nigh impossible (e.g. Miss Peach World), Idol Shisen Mahjong seems both sufficiently challenging and winnable to merit playing it. It also had an ample supply of material to hack: two title screens, twelve pictures (of four women), an ending screen, and even the menus.
Since graphics hacks are a dime a dozen for old NES games and the music of Idol Shisen Mahjong gets very irritating very quickly, this is also intended to be a full musical hack. Though this lone hacker is no musician and certainly no composer, certain people who are provided five fairly famous old tunes capable of being adapted to fit the minimalist and repetitive style of 8-bit music and, more importantly, the very tight space into which the game’s original tunes had been squeezed.
Most of these songs should be recognizable to people from… a certain generation. If they seem unrecognizable, one should try playing them for one’s parents and grandparents to see if they recognize them. If one happens to recognize all of them… well, no prizes are available for such impressive knowledge of such trivial matters, but as TV Tropes (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.ph.../AWinnerIsYou) would say, “A Winner Is You!”
While playing, one may notice some progression in the quality of the artwork and music. This is in direct correlation to the progressive development of hacking skills, which ultimately included having to learn some basic ASM coding in order to reassign some sprites from one screen to another. With the music, this progression ran backwards while experimenting with changing the fifth and last tune in order to keep from having to move the other tracks and reassign the pointers, and then worked upward through the other tunes from there. The first tune, which plays only once very briefly for the title screens, was also the one most pressed for space once all the others were adapted, which is one reason why it’s so bare-bones minimalist. (On the other hand, so is the original performance from which it was adapted.)
Speaking of the title screens, one may notice the English one flashes by rather quickly. This oddity actually arises from having fixed an error in the original game while shuffling the sprite assignments. Unfortunately, this error seems to have been an intentionally introduced inefficiency to keep the title screens from shifting so quickly, and all efforts to reproduce it with the new sprite assignments have proved futile. Moreover, the error in the original did cause lockups in the emulators on certain hand held devices, so on the whole the game is probably better off without it.
Considering that the graphic tiles tables (all of which are altered) alone take up almost two thirds of Idol Shisen Mahjong’s ROM and the graphics pattern tables and music data (all of which are also altered) consume another significant portion, perhaps the only surprise is that the patch for this 96 kilobyte game comes to no more than a little over 64 kilobytes. In any event, with this patch, every picture in the game should now be perfectly safe for work (though playing it when one is supposed to be working is still inadvisable; competent bosses tend to frown on such frivolities). Enjoy!

Activision has announced Fast & Furious: Showdown, a video game tie-in for the upcoming street racing film.
The game will be released in the UK on May 24th for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii U, according to GAME listings.
Polygon reports Showdown is being developed by Firebrand Games and focuses on two-player co-op. Gamers can switch between the self-explanatory roles of driver and gunman, as well as the less-clear positions of tactician and daredevil (presumably the chap who leaps from bonnet to bonnet).
Most of the action will take place in an objective-based Challenge Mode, with online leaderboards allowing players to compare their scores.
The May 24th launch for F&F: Showdown comes a few weeks before the June premiere of Fast & Furious 6, starring Vin Diesel.

The newest Monster Hunter has been a much-needed success story for Wii U - so much so that the game is selling out.
Fortunately, Nintendo of Europe has pledged to resupply retailers with fresh stock of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for both Wii U and 3DS within weeks.
"I'd like to apologise for the current stock shortage due to high demand of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate at retail," Nintendo of Europe boss Satoru Shibata tweeted via an official Nintendo account.
"New #MH3U stock will hopefully be available in shops next week for Wii U and mid April for Nintendo 3DS. Both versions of #MH3U are also available on Nintendo eShop. Again, I sincerely apologise for causing any inconvenience."
Sales for the Wii U itself have been slow since launch, but the release of Monster Hunter 3 helpedits UK performance rebound significantly. Nintendo has also promised to work with retailers to detail its plans to regain momentum for the new console.

Developer Demiurge says it is 'business as usual' for the studio despite the cancellation
Sega has cancelled the Wii U port of Aliens: Colonial Marines.
The Wii U port, often tipped by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford as the best version of the title, had been expected to launch in March, but Sega has now confirmed the game has been cancelled, although it has not given a reason for doing so.
"Sega can confirm that the Wii U sku of Aliens: Colonial Marines is no longer in development," read a statement from Sega.
Albert Reed, CEO for independent US studio Demiurge, which was developing the Wii U port, has told Develop that while the company is sorry to hear of the game's cancellation, it is "business as usual" for the firm.
"We were very sorry to hear about the cancellation of Aliens for Wii U," said Reed.

The Wii U's Miiverse has received two new updates to improve user experience. The layout of the community pages has been updated to enforce a limit of 100 comments displayed at once, in order to improve loading times.Meanwhile, communities have been grouped into categories to smooth out the search function. Now you simply need to type what you are looking for, such as 'Wii U Games', and you'll find the right community. The updates are small, but they bring speed and convenience to the Miiverse. More updates are expected to roll out soon, including MiiVerse browser and smartphone support.

There are at least two schools of thought when it comes to playing retro games. Let's call it two for the sake of argument. On one side, there are people who want all the modern conveniences, both in-game and out: save states, fast-forward and rewind in the games, and wireless controllers, high definition output, and non-finicky hardware to play them with. These are the people who like emulation the most, either through downloading ROMs or official downloadable re-releases of games.
On the other side, there are people who strive for absolute authenticity: real cartridges on real consoles, played on CRT televisions with real controllers. These are the people who, hypothetically speaking, stuff a Twin Famicom in their suitcase while on a business trip to Tokyo.
Somewhere in the middle is this thing.

Dragon Quest X's Wii U release sold 33,302 copies at retail in its first week in Japan. Granted, that first "week" lasted two days, as Media Create's weekly ranking period ran from March 25-31, and Dragon Quest X was released on the 30th, but that's still low for a Dragon Quest game. The Wii version of the MMO, for comparison, sold over 420,000 copies at launch, and Dragon Quest IX sold over 2 million before that.
Not only is that low for a Dragon Quest game, it's not exactly the boost the Wii U hardware so desperately needed. The Wii U only sold 22,829 units last week, behind both versions of the ever-popular 3DS (Luigi's Mansion 2 was the best selling game, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf is at #3, approaching 3 million copies life-to-date), and behind even the Vita, which is experiencing something of a resurgence.
The sales situation for Dragon Quest X is more complicated than it may seem. While the retail sales were disappointing, there's likely a significant number of digital sales, which wouldn't show up on Media Create's charts – and which we'll never know about unless Square Enix or Nintendo decides to tell us. Square Enix offers half-price downloads of the Wii U version to anyone who owns the Wii version, so it's safe to assume at least some of the Wii buyers took advantage of that offer.

Finally… Every aspect of Pokemon Ultra Violet Version is finished. The Player’s Guide has also been completed. While making the Player’s Guide, it was a good time to test EVERY event, and find all the glitches.
You may have noticed some glitches in previous versions such as:
- No Pokemon were in the “Steel Maze” in the 4-points Catacombs.
- The statues in the Pokemon Mansion did nothing (game ending glitch).
- Kabuto could not be revived.
- Sneasle and Zigzagoon were not in the game.
- Many other small glitches (text issues or sound errors).
All of these and MANY more were fixed…
Also, some new events were added:
- Celebi has his own event.
- Defeating Celebi (not catching) gains you an egg containing a Pichu with volt tackle.
- Defeating the Elite Four re-spawns a defeated (not caught) Celebi
- BuriedAlive has been added (not in the Player’s Guide, read the lore to find him)
- A few text modifications have also been made such as Oak’s speech after you beat the Elite Four.

Nintendo has revealed that the 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will contain new content not in the Wii original. As before, each level will contain letter collectibles that spell K-O-N-G. Collecting all of these along with puzzle pieces hidden in each stage and you will unlock 'extra content' like the more challenging Trophy levels.Beat every Trophy level and Nintendo says a "brand new surprise awaits".The 3DS version will also have a new 'easier' option for less experienced gamers that will give the Kongs three hearts instead of two. You'll also be able to spend Banana Coins on items from Cranky Kong to "help save you from falls, allow the Mine Cart and Rocket Barrel to take a second hit, and even let you use a DK Barrel whenever you like."Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will release on 3DS in Europe on May 24, Nintendo confirmed recently. We gave the Wii original an 8.8/10 score in a praising review in which we called it "an impressive, worthy successor to the classic Super NES series".

Nintendulator 0.975 beta (2013/04/06) is released. Nintendulator is an open source Win32 NES emulator written in C (plus some assembly optimization). The original goal was to emulate the NES down to its hardware quirks; though it's fallen behind over the years, recent builds have caught up once again and can emulate certain behaviors most other emulators neglect to handle. However, this emulation precision comes at a price - a 1500MHz (estimated) or faster CPU is required to emulate at full speed.
Supported file formats include .NES, UNIF, FDS (fwNES format), and NSF. Mappers are handled using external DLLs, complete with extra sound channels for most games which provide them. Other notable features include writing to FDS images (by storing the differences in the SRAM folder), Game Genie support (limited to 3 codes), customizeable controllers (including 4 player), input movie recording and playback (with re-recording), AVI capturing, and a debugger.

The Wii U’s use of an integrated second screen poses a notable threat to Microsoft and Sony’s rival machines.
That’s according to design legend Shigeru Miyamoto who speaking to CNN said that the Wii U’s impact will grow considerably over time.
"The challenge that we had was if someone wanted to view television, then you couldn't play games,” he explained. “We wanted to have a second screen for Wii U that would make it possible for people to essentially play games even if something else was on the TV.
"There was a period when we first released the Nintendo DS that people would say there's no way people can look at two screens at once.
"I almost feel like, as people get more familiar with Wii U and these touchscreen interfaces, that there is going to come a point where they feel like 'I can't do everything I want to do if I don't have a second screen'."
Miyamoto also believes that Wii U has another ace up its sleeve – the fact that its design affords it a purpose as a general living room device.
"I feel a device like Wii U, with its ability to continue to offer new features and that network connection and the connection to the TV and the interface, really makes it feel that it's more than just a game machine, but something that offers a lot of practical use and practical purpose in the living room," he added.
"I look at it as being a very useful device that can do many different things and therefore really seems to be the device that's ideal to have in the living room.
"The other thing I think about is how do we begin getting people to understand that and convey the usefulness of Wii U to them. For me as a game developer, obviously I look at Wii U from the perspective of what games I can bring to Wii U."

Context matters. Out of context I can say that one of my fondest memories of this past GDC involves giving orders to a blindfolded woman crawling on all fours. Despite what you might think, this transpires on the GDC Play showfloor as part of the Danish and Swedish collaborative experimental Wii U party game, Spin the Bottle, "an innocent game for innocent children."Despite the risque title and light roleplay, KnapNok's Spin the Bottle is a surprisingly wholesome affair. Players spin a virtual wheel on the Wii U GamePad to determine what peculiar motion controlled challenges they'll have to embark on with a partner. No TV is ever used. The mini-game in question above is called Blind Dog, and it requires me to sit down and stand a Wiimote up behind me while ordering my blindfolded partner - chosen by wheel spinning - to crawl forth and retrieve the controller without knocking it over. It's much less creepy than it sounds. When I first encounter Spin the Bottle I regrettably only have a few minutes to see it before I have to split for a panel. This is the game's last day on the floor and upon trying to work out if I'll have another chance to see it, developer KnapNok's co-founder Dajana Dimovska invites me to get more time with it at a small private shindig called the Official Independent Drinking Games Summit. A game about personal interactions, drinking, and physical contact seems ill-fit for a crowded drab grey showfloor where everyone's hustlin' and bustlin' to get to where they need to go, so I take Dimovka up on her offer and wind up partying with the Copenhagen Game Collective. In case you've not heard of the Copenhagen Game Collective (or CGC for short), it's the band of indie developers that produced such experimental screenless folk games as Johann Sebastian Joust, B.U.T.T.O.N. and Darkroom Sex Game. All these titles focus on local multiplayer and physical play.

As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.

The next 12 months will be amongst the biggest in Pokémon history, says The Pokémon Company.
The firm is gearing up to launch multiple new games, a new TV series, events, a film and new toys throughout 2013, all climaxing in the launch of Pokémon X and Y on 3DS this October: the first ever worldwide release of a major Pokémon game.
The firm also says it has ‘cleared the decks’ in terms of licensing, and Tomy International has been brought onboard to ensure that everyone around the world gets the same toys as the ones out in Japan.
“Undoubtedly 2013 is a key year for us to grow and usher in a new era for Pokémon with Pokémon X and Pokémon Y and the introduction of new characters as the launch platform,” The Pokémon Company International’s marketing director Anthony Cornish told MCV.
“We believe these games will appeal to all generations both veterans and newcomers to Pokémon.”
But before the launch of X and Y, Nintendo will release Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity in Europe on Friday, May 17th. And the firm will this month launch a Skylanders-style toy/game hybrid called Pokémon Rumble U in Japan, although there’s currently no word on a European release yet.

You know those goofy tennis racket peripherals that allow for Wiimote insertion? Or, perhaps more sensibly, those Guitar Hero axes that wouldn't function without a Wiimote planted at the heart? Looks as if Nintendo's going to do us all one better. Based on a rambling new patent granted to the Big N this week, the company now holds the power to concoct a "remotely controlled mobile device control system." Distilled down, the verbiage describes a Wiimote-type controller being embedded within a "remote controlled toy," which would then be (unsurprisingly) used in conjunction with a game console. Essentially, this opens the door for Honda to develop a new variant of ASIMO that takes commands via an embedded Wii controller... or, for a Wii-infused robot to turn on its owner and commit unspeakable crimes against humanity. But hey, it'll probably be pretty cute.

505 Games believes its Ashes game will outperform all previous cricket titles thanks to a double helping of tournaments.
The timings of this year’s Ashes means the UK publisher will be able to maintain sales momentum throughout the year as, for the first time, there will be two Ashes tournaments held back-to-back.
“Any Ashes year provides a bumper sales opportunity for cricket games as Codemasters saw back in 2009,” UK and export marketing director Alison Greagsby told MCV. “2013 is a very unique year for the Ashes with two series back-to-back. So there are two sales windows to exploit.
“The talk around the Ashes tournament itself is building across mainstream sports media, we’re seeing an unprecedented level of interest from the worldwide cricket audience.”
Ashes Cricket 2013 is due for release on 360, PS3, Wii U and PC on June 21st.

Ubisoft designer Michel Ancel has confirmed that thanks to the delay ofRayman Legends, the game will feature a wealth of new content. Speaking to ONM, Ancel sympathised with those disappointed by the delay, but also confirmed that new content will be included as a result."Trust me, the things we are adding aren't minor," Ancel said. "We're not talking about adding some polish here and there, but 30 new levels and several new bosses."Rayman Legends was delayed from its initial February 2013 release when it was confirmed the title will no longer be a Wii U exclusive. It will now hit retail in September on Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360.Meanwhile, the online challenge mode promised to disappointed Wii U fans is due later this month. It will include four levels, including exclusive Wii U level Murfy's Dungeon, as well as regular challenges and leaderboard updates.

The much anticipated cross-region play update for Monster Hunter 3 will be released on April 15, Capcom has confirmed. The patch goes live in both US and Europe simultaneously April 15 at 5pm Pacific, which works out as April 16 at 1am UK time.Once installed, Europe and US servers will be merged, allowing players in both regions to play together in games of up to four players. This signals a complete u-turn on Capcom's original plan to region-lock the game's multiplayer component, to the disappointment of fans and even Capcom USA's own community man Yuri L. Araujo, who publicly admitted, "I'm not thrilled with the servers being split either."The update will also add compatibility with Wii U's off-TV play feature, allowing for full gameplay to be transferred to the GamePad screen.Capcom admitted in its original announcement that this update comes entirely as a result of "very loud and clear" community feedback.Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was released for Wii U and 3DS in Europe on March 22, and North America on March 19 via both retail and digital (eShop) outlets.

Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien - Gaijin Games' follow-up to Bit.Trip Runner - is due out on the European Wii U eShop on 11th April, the developer announced on its Facebook page.It came out in February on XBLA, PC and the North American Wii U eShop and PSN. The PC version costs £11.99, so presumably the Wii U one will cost the same, or thereabouts. Vita and iOS versions are due this summer, and the EU PSN version is still to be dated. Our Simon Parkin quite liked Gaijin's latest rhythmic auto-runner. "Its true treasure is to be found in the marriage of rhythm and platforming - an inventive concoction shrouded in the guise of a plain auto-runner," said Parkin in his 8/10 Runner2 review. "Future Legend of Rhythm Alien may be a pre-emptively boastful title, but in its quiet, unassuming way, Gaijin Games has once again struck gold."

Get your finest green tuxedo ready, Los Angelenos, because the Legend of Zelda Symphony of the Goddesses concert is coming back in June. The touring show features a full orchestra performing classic tunes from the series, and this event promises "newly approved" music straight from the land of Hyrule.
The show starts at the Greek Theatre on Wednesday, June 12, which puts it right on the second day of E3 2013. If you want tickets, they'll be available this Saturday at 10AM through Ticketmaster.
This is a newly scheduled stop on the Zelda tour, but it's not the only one: The full schedule has dates around the rest of California, in Texas, and up in Seattle and Toronto as well.

Yes, there's another CG and live-action Smurfs movie coming out this July, and Ubisoft is publishing the official game adaptation.
However, instead of the truly off-putting dance game released for the first movie, Ubisoft has smurfed WayForward into making a 2.5D, co-op platformer for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and Wii U, and an "interactive storytelling book and collection of mini-games" for DS. All versions will march into stores this July.
Each playable Smurf has unique special abilities: Papa Smurf can throw potions, Grouchy can stomp, and Vanity can ... pose to become a platform. We don't expect too much from a licensed Smurfs game, but WayForward has a particular talent for licensed games, with Aliens: Infestation and Adventure Time as recent examples.

All of the recent news about Disney Interactive has been related to layoffs, studioclosures, and in general, disappointment. Or Disney Infinity, which has appeared to be the exclusive focus of the division all year.
But Disney Interactive has a second game in the works. A game based onDisney's Planes, the Disney-produced, formerly straight-to-DVD spinoff of Cars, will be released on Wii U, Wii, 3DS, and DS on August 6, three days before the movie is released.
"The game will expand beyond the storyline of the Disney's Planes film," Nintendo reveals, "offering players the opportunity to enjoy the thrill of flight as one of the popular characters from the film."

If you've been keeping up with your Swapnote mailbox on 3DS, you can download an update today and enjoy some new features, including the ability to take photos or record audio and attach it to your notes, undo drawings, and use different colors on each page of a note.
Even if, like me, you haven't checked Swapnote in a few months and get kind of sick to your stomach at the thought of the thousands of unread notes building up in your inbox, the update will be of interest. You can delete multiple notes simultaneously now, and filter your messages by sender.

Hopes of a Western release for a 3DS version of Ni No Kuni have been resurrected.
The game enjoyed tremendous critical success upon its European PS3 release in January, but it actually debuted as a DS title in Japan back in 2010.
Now Pocket Gamer reports that an un-named Namco Publisher executive has apparently claimed that the publisher “is not opposed” to the idea of reworking the game for a release on Nintendo’s latest handheld.
The question now is whether a 3DS version would be based on the DS code or instead on the more modern and technically advanced PS3 SKU.

When it comes to modding consoles there are two names that generally stand above the rest: Mr. Benjamin J. Heckendorn and the man known as Bacteria. The latter has done his fair share of portable machines, but his latest completed project takes console hacking to lofty new heights. Unity crams a stunning 15 different consoles (including classics like the SNES and not-so-classics like the TurboGrafx 16) into a single, admittedly bulky box. The one of a kind entertainment center is the culmination of three years and $700 invested in bringing this dream to life. All of the hardware inside is either from the original consoles (no emulation of clone systems here!) or custom built -- such as the 16-position switch. And, it should go without saying, that it took a whole lot to get these gaming machines to share a single power supply, video cable and control pad. Now that the epic project is finally complete Bacteria has provided a rather lengthy walk though of all the various features and the work that went into it, which you can check out after the break.

Some people know [Tom Murphy] as [Dr. Tom Murphy VII Ph.D.] and this hack makes it obvious that he earned those accolades. He decided to see if he could teach a computer to win at Super Mario Bros. But he went about it in a way that we’d bet is different that 99.9% of readers would first think of. The game doesn’t care about Mario, power-ups, or really even about enemies. It’s simply looking at the metrics which indicate you’re doing well at the game, namely score and world/level.
The link above includes his whitepaper, but we think you’ll want to watch the 16-minute video (after the break) before trying to tackle that. In the clip he explains the process in laymen’s terms which so far is the only part we really understand (hence the reference to voodoo in the title). His program uses heuristics to assemble a set of evolving controller inputs to drive the scores ever higher. In other words, instead of following in the footstep of Minesweeper solvers or Bejeweled Blitz bots which play as a human would by observing the game space, his software plays the game over and over, learning what combinations of controller inputs result in success and which do not. The image to the right is a graph of it’s learning progress. Makes total sense, huh?

This isn't the first time a Korg synth has been re-imagined in software form, it's not even the first (or second) time on Nintendo's DS. But, when Detune releases its M01D for the handheld console, it'll spark more than a little nostalgia for synth enthusiasts. Why? Because it's heavily inspired by Korg's legendary M1 synth, complete with all its sounds (and yes, the famous piano patch included), plus some new ones thrown in for good measure. The DS version includes a step sequencer (eight tracks with up to 64 steps per sequence) that you can compile together in "scenes." Borrowing from other parts of the Korg family, the M01D app also offers a KAOSS mode, too, no doubt using one of those screens serving as the touchpad. You can preserve your creativity by saving to SD card, or the usual internet sharing options, and heck there's even a 3D viewing mode too. Lordy! How that will actually look, we don't know, or at least we won't until its May release in Japan, before reaching the rest of the world in Summer.

QUBE, the first game to come out of (the pockets of) Indie Fund, is on its way to Wii U and maybe Vita, according to a series of messages on the game's officialTwitter. Toxic Games reveals a picture of QUBE running on the Wii U (shown above), along with the note that it "can't wait to get this out." As for a Vita version, Toxic responds to an inquiry with, "Quite possibly!"
QUBE launched on PC in December 2011 – and we found it to be "a delightful on-screen Rubik's Cube" – and made its way to Mac one year later, in December 2012. The game recouped its $90,000 development cost in just four days, selling more than 12,000 copies on Steam in that time.

Mobile puzzle hit Puzzle & Dragons, in which players build teams of monsters and explore dungeons, leading them into combat through color-matching puzzles, is coming to 3DS this winter, according to scans of CoroCoro Magazine found by Siliconera.
The 3DS version, called Puzzle & Dragons Z, features 200 different monsters to battle with. The nature of the release is as yet unknown – the mobile versions are free-to-play, but that is exceptionally rare on 3DS (approximately zero games ever have used the model on the platform).

Three Phase Labyrinth (3PLabyrinth) by Mincemeat TEAM is a game based on solving labyrinth, to maintain mental alertness.
The goal is to connect 3 outputs via 3 different ways, and these can not be crossed. With the difficulty that we never have a full view of the labyrinth, but we can only go exploring it in sections, and we will have to rotate the sections to be drawing the roads.

Aeon Genesis has released a complete translation for the SNES RPG based on Stardust Crusaders, the third arc of the JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure manga. The game is fairly short and is of the approximate quality one would expect from a license cash-in, but it’s an interesting diversion. The readme contains some gameplay tips, so be sure to peruse!

KingMike has released an updated translation patch for Magna Braban for the SNES. While the old 06/06/06 06:06 patch has some sentimental value, this new version should be compatible with accurate emulators. This translation might’ve kept Gideon’s original DTE routine, but otherwise all other translation coding has been redone. This code is a comparatively cleaner hack, though the text banks were recopied from the original patch, so the text is pretty much unchanged. While a full playthrough of this patch hasn’t been done, it has been tested that all code and menu modifications are working. This version translates a hidden feature found that can display enemy names in battle, whereas they weren’t translated in the original patch. Not all names have been checked yet, but as that is more of an “omake” feature (AFAIK it can only be seen with a PAR code), it was decided it shouldn’t hold up a patch released.
Additionally, KingMike has released a new patch that inserts the credits into the ending of Time Zone for the NES. If one hasn’t played it, it’s a cartoony sidescroller that kind of resembles Panic Restaurant. Might have even been by the same people. Back when the first patch was released in 2001 it was beyond his ability to insert the credits, then forgotten for over a decade. The rest of the script is unchanged.

Zelda Classic started out as a Zelda engine-clone. Thanks to the applications growing community it now supports a variety of custom levels and complete Zelda-themed games. Linked to the Past is one such game with a nod towards the SNES classic, featuring time travel and Zelda 1 influences.
Features:
- 30 different dungeons!
- Solid 30 hours of gameplay
- Every single dungeon is guarded by a custom boss, and there are also a few sub-bosses thrown in for good measure, so I hope you enjoy fighting bosses as much as I do
- Many optional secrets to find
- The quest takes influences from several Zelda games but the biggest influence is still Zelda 1, so if you're a Zelda 1 hater, this is probably not for you

Analyst forecasts yet another bad month of sales in the US for Nintendo's console and says even a price cut wouldn't be enough to help
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
The NPD Group will report its US video game retail data this Thursday, and in a preview note Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter commented that he's expecting Nintendo to post yet another weak month of Wii U sales. For the Wii U's fifth month on the market, he's forecasting that Nintendo sold just 55,000 units, which would represent a 17 percent decline month-over-month. Moreover, Pachter's expecting this slide to continue for Wii U, even if Nintendo chooses to implement a price cut.
"The only key hardware device to underperform our expectations was the Wii U," Pachter said of last month's numbers, "and its fortunes appear unlikely to improve for several months, even if Nintendo decides to drop price, as there are an insufficient number of core titles that are generating interest in the console. We think that core gamers are far more likely to turn their attention to the PS4 (due in the holiday season) and the next Xbox, which we believe will be unveiled before E3 and have a launch alongside that of the PS4, and believe that the long-term appeal of the Wii U will be severely limited by the perception that the PS4 and next Xbox will be much more powerful with greater online integration and multimedia functionality."
And if the pricing on the PS4 and next Xbox is reasonable, it could really put Wii U in a bind, Pachter added: "Should the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft be price competitive, we think that Wii U sales may continue to stagnate." In fact, Pachter believes that next-gen consoles are likely to be subsidized and will therefore look even more affordable to consumers.
"We think that the next-generation consoles will perform a wide range of multimedia functions. We should learn more in the coming months, but we expect the next Xbox to have an IPTV tuner that will allow an MSO to deliver services over the Internet outside of the MSO's regulated geographic boundaries. If we are right, any of Microsoft's MSO partners will have an incentive to subsidize the purchase of the next Xbox in exchange for a long-term service commitment (similar to the cell phone model). If the subsidies are steep, it is likely that the next Xbox will appear more affordable to many consumers than currently anticipated, and it may capture market share faster than many expect. We don't expect Sony to sit idly by watching, and believe that the PS4 will follow Microsoft's lead in short order, suggesting to us that next-generation consoles could have lower starting prices than any in history," he said.
As for March retail game sales overall, Pachter expects the numbers to be up slightly (just one percent) thanks to big AAA releases like Gears of War: Judgment, Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite.

A new set of near field communication-enhanced toys for the Wii U action game Pokémon Scramble U will come to Japan on May 25. The game has yet to be announced for release worldwide, but it's a Pokémon game, so you should expect it.
The second series of toys includes Eevee, Mewtwo, Croagunk, Zoroark, Litwick, and Genesect, and one secret unannounced Pokémon. The NFC figures add playable characters to the game, much in the style of Skylanders.
In the Pokémon Rumble/Scramble games, all of the playable Pokemon are actually wind-up toy Pokémon – which means these figures are toy versions of toys.

Nintendo appears to be on the verge of releasing a brand new 3DS SKU in the UK.
Joystiq says that retailer ShopTo was yesterday carrying a listing for the Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS XL bundle that was previously released in Japan.
The SKU reportedly contained the patterned 3DS (as pictured above) and a 4GB SD card. It was on sale for £190.
The listing has since been removed.
Nintendo has scheduled a Nintendo Direct broadcast for tomorrow. Odds on the new hardware being revealed then?

Wii U owners will have to wait a tiny bit longer to get their hands on Warner’s Injustice: Gods Among Us.
Fortunately, the delay is only a slight one – the game will arrive a week later than originally planned on Wii U on April 26th, as confirmed by CVG. The reason for the change is unknown.
Wii U owners are also missing out on the Special editions of the game
The Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of the game are still set to arrive in the UK this Friday (April 19th).
Injustice: Gods Among Us sees a host of DC superheroes such as Superman, Batman and The Flash face off in a range of spectacular settings. It’s built on the same engine as Warner’s Mortal Kombat reboot.

It's the archetypal jackpot story of flea markets, pawn shops and antiques roadshows. Someone pays a few dollars for a long-forgotten box at a swap meet and then discovers they have a five-figure rarity on their hands. That describes a North Carolina woman today, who purchased one of the rarest video games ever sold in the United States for $7.99 at a local Goodwill.
Wilder Hamm, the owner of Save Point Video Games in Charlotte N.C., met this woman this morning when he opened his store. He held the box and saw its contents: Stadium Events.
"Oh my God!" Hamm said he blurted, when she showed him the box. "She knew exactly what she had," Hamm told Kotaku. She showed it to him last, after presenting some common titles like 10-Yard Fight and The Karate Kid, before rolling out Stadium Events like a $15,000 punchline.
It worked.
"Normally in this business, we try not to show our cards," Hamm said. "We're not in the business of ripping people off but, you show that kind of excitement, they start expecting a mountain of money."
She may get it. Stadium Events, one of the first exergaming titles, was only released in a test market in the northern United States in 1987. The next year, Nintendo bought the North American rights to its "Family Fun Fitness" mat, which then became the more well known Power Pad. Anything under the Family Fun Fitness brand was supposed to have been destroyed.
The box Hamm saw most certainly wasn't. It's in great shape, and so is the game's instructions and its cart. The box still had the plastic on it, though it had been slit so that the box top could be opened and the contents verified.
"She knew exactly what she had," said Hamm, who held and inspected the cart himself. "When I asked her what she expected to get, she said she expected $7,000 to $15,000, which is on target."

There is a new Holy Grail of Rare Video Games, and it is Stadium Events. The auction on a… Read…
If the plastic had not been cut—if it was truly sealed in the box—Hamm had no idea what it would be worth then. "Our price for the cartridge alone is $2,800, should we have it for any reason." In 2010, a sealed-in-the-box copy of Stadium Events listed on eBay drew a winning bid of $41,300.

On ebay theres an auction of a very rare double box set
Super metroid & zelda big box - the ultimate snes big box edition ! your more likely to find a zelda big box than one of these.
UK PAL released at the end of 1994 as a promotional item. This is a one off chance to obtain one of these in collectors condition. I decided to buy this set over the scandanavian release zelda big box as it combines two of the best games released on the snes & I personally feel it looks better as well. This set was also a lot harder to obtain & is the grail of my collection.
Ive only ever seen 2 for sale in the past few years & both the others were badly damaged & incomplete. This is a true one off for an investor or hardcore snes collector.
Check it out here --> http://www.ebay.com/itm/330906808098

A new 3DS Zelda title set for release later this year will take place in the same universe as SNES classic A Link To The Past, but feature a new storyline and new dungeons.Nintendo confirmed the new title in today’s Nintendo Direct, and said that it will use the greater sense of height and volume the 3DS’ display offers.A key mechanic in the game will be to turn Link into a drawing, allowing him to move around inside the game’s walls and change the view of play. Nintendo continues to please its committed fans with a host of IP revivals for its 3DS handheld.
Leading the line is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2, which is set in the same game world as the 1992 SNES original. In it Link will be able to “become a drawing and move within walls”.
There’s more for Zelda fans, too – Virtual Console releases are planned for The Legend of Zelda series for Virtual Console: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. These two Capcom developed titles were first released on Game Boy Colour way back in 2001.
They were also some of the first to offer interconnectability, as playing one unlocks content on the other. These features will be retained in the re-releases.
The Mario Party series will make its 3DS bow this winter, offering 81 minigames. Also on the way is a third release in the Yoshi’s Island series and a European release for Square Enix RPG Bravely Default.
Digital 3DS title Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros will hit the 3DS eShop on July 12th while Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D arrives on May 24th. Before that, May 9th will see the release of Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move.
Remember that leaked Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS hardware SKU? Yes, it is indeed coming to the UK and will be available from June 14th.
There is also news for Wii U owners. A system update released next week will finally bring the Virtual Console to the system, although perhaps the biggest surprise is a long-awaited digital release for EarthBound, which will hit VC later this year.

Reggie Fils-Aime tells us that Fire Emblem alone sold around 80,000 units digitally; also, the pace of Wii U releases will increase "dramatically"
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
Last August, Nintendo began to more fully embrace digital distribution as a way to get games in people's hands - a notable shift for a company that had previously stayed an arm's distance from the online world.
The experiment is paying off. Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says digital downloads are fast becoming a notable contributor to the company's bottom line - and he expects the trend to continue its rapid rise.
"We have 15 Nintendo-published titles available, both physically and digitally [on the 3DS]," he says. "So far in 2013, of those 15 available in this format, 11 percent of sales have come through full digital downloads of those games."
The numbers get more impressive with some individual titles. Fils-Aime says Fire Emblem Awakening has sold 240,000 units life-to-date in the US - with one-third of those in digital form.
Fils-Aime was in the mood to talk more about the 3DS than the Wii U, given the company's plans to announce new entries in the Legend of Zelda, Yoshi's Island and Mario Party franchises at today's Nintendo Direct broadcast. And given that system's success compared to its console cousin, that's understandable.
"So far in 2013 - through April 15 - 3DS game sales are up 55 percent versus last year, counting both physical and digital"
While the Wii U has yet to gain significant traction in the market, the 3DS has become something of a surprise success story. In the first two years on the market, it sold 8 million units in the US - 1 million more than its predecessor. And game sales have kept pace.
"When the NPD numbers come out later this week, you're going to see life-to-date 3DS game sales surpass 20 million units in the US," says Fils-Aime. "And that's just physical. It doesn't include digital sales. ... So far in 2013 - through April 15 - 3DS game sales are up 55 percent versus last year, counting both physical and digital."
Fire Emblem Awakening - a digital success story for Nintendo
67 percent of all Nintendo 3DS owners have connected their 3DS to the Internet so far. And most of those have found something of interest in the eShop.
"Through that connected experience, consumers have downloaded more than 41 million items from the eShop - everything from full games to applications like Nintendo video, DLC, demos, free items, and more," says Fils-Aime.
The 3DS was criticized initially for a slow ramp of games, something Nintendo has tried to counter with releases like Luigi's Mansion (which Fils-Aime says has sold 415,000 units so far) and today's Nintendo Direct announcements. Over the next nine months, he says, "the pace is going to be dramatically ramped up."
That's also going to be true of the Wii U, he says - but it appears the company is keeping that powder dry for E3.
"What I would say about Wii U - and what Mr. Iwata has said - is that the pace of launches has been slower than we hoped. But as we prepare for E3, the pace of launches for Wii U is going to dramatically increase."
One area you shouldn't expect the company to focus on, however, is non-gaming entertainment. While competitors like Microsoft see the console as a gateway into the living room that works in conjunction with the cable box, Fils-Aime and Nintendo would prefer to stay focused on games - and they believe the same is true of Nintendo's customer base.
"The pace of [Wii U] launches has been slower than we hoped. But as we prepare for E3, the pace of launches for Wii U is going to dramatically increase"
"We believe consumers buy our systems first as a gaming system, then enjoy the other entertainment options, so that's why we're putting such a big emphasis on the gaming software," he says.
Of course, another part of that software emphasis is the coming competition this holiday period. The Wii U will be fighting Sony's PlayStation 4 (and, almost certainly, Microsoft's new Xbox) for customer dollars. Nintendo's hoping the big guns in its new software lineup outshine the launch titles of the other systems.
To win the battle, though, it helps to be in as many retail storefronts as possible - and Nintendo is absent in one of the biggest: Amazon. While the retailer sells Nintendo hardware through some of its retail partners, it has not carried the products itself for a long time.
Fils-Aime declined to say precisely why the two companies seemingly aren't able to work together on hardware sales, noting that it was ultimately Amazon's decision.
"We have programs we make available to all retailers," he says. "So then in the end, it becomes a decision by the retailer how they want to participate. Right now, Amazon is focused on selling software, but has decided not to sell hardware."

A new Nintendo 3DS XL portable game console is headed to North America and Europe this June (in addition to Japan), and it's got a fancy limited-edition body intended to entice Animal Crossing fans. The $219.99 console bundle includes a digital copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf -- the upcoming 3DS iteration of the long-running sim series -- and the new white console. For those playing along at home, the game itself costs $34.99 and a new Nintendo 3DS XL costs $199.99, which makes this limited edition bundle a steal all things considered (even without dragons). It's also quite a pretty device, so that certainly doesn't hurt either.

Nintendo's Wii U game console is getting its promised spring update next week, said company president Satoru Iwata in a Luigi-filled video presentation this morning. The update is said to launch software dramatically faster than before, as Nintendo demonstrated in a video last month. Iwata also said the update adds continuable downloads while the console is off, and that Virtual Console won't arrive until the following week -- should you wish to directly launch into the Wii menu, you'll be able to hold down the B button as the console is starting up.
That said, if you wanna play those VC games directly from the Wii U menu, you'll need to re-buy them for $1 apiece for NES games and $1.50 for SNES games. A variety of games were shown off as available at the Virtual Console's launch, including classics like Super Mario World and Punch-Out! Apparently GameBoy Advance and Nintendo 64 games are planned for inclusion on the VC in the coming months, but no definitive date was given. He also said Panorama View will arrive next week for free, and it sounds like it'll be a separate download from the software update.

'Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move' is the official title for the latest game in the Mario vs. Donkey series, and it'll be released via the US 3DS eShop on May 9. Nintendo confirmed as much today during its Nintendo Direct broadcast, during which company boss Satoru Iwata offered gameplay details and new in-game video footage, viewable below.First announced in February under the placeholder title 'Mario and Donkey Kong', it's the fifth game in the series, but abandons the usual side-scrolling puzzle platforming for a top-down puzzle mechanic similar to the 1980s game Pipemania. You can see the original announcement trailer here.Players have to place down paths for mechanical Mario characters to walk along, being sure to avoid obstacles and hazards. There will also be a selection of mini-games including one in which you use a slingshot to fire Mario at targets.

Nintendo has provided new details of its first major update to the Wii U operating system, scheduled for roll-out in late April. Central to the update will be new options to "switch data between two USB drives", according to company president Satoru Iwata. The long-awaited Wii U spring system update will also reduce loading times, quite significantly in certain respects. A recent video from Nintendo demonstrated that the update could, for example, reduce the loading time between game and operating system by more than half.

The 3DS has sold 8 million units in the US, 1 million more than its predecessor.
This figure comes out of an interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime at GamesIndustry International. Fils-Aime noted that software sales are on the rise, too. "When the NPD numbers come out later this week, you're going to see life-to-date 3DS game sales surpass 20 million units in the US," and that's only counting physical units. "3DS game sales are up 55 percent versus last year, counting both physical and digital."The NoA president also stated that of the 15 Nintendo-published titles on the 3DS, 11 per cent of those sales in 2013 have been conducted digitally over the eShop. He added that 80,000 of the 240,000 copies of Fire Emblem sold to date have been purchased digitally."Through that connected experience, consumers have downloaded more than 41 million items from the eShop," Fils-Aime added, though this statistic includes more than just games as it covers "everything from full games to applications like Nintendo video, DLC, demos, free items, and more."Fils-Aime was less keen on discussing the Wii U's sales performance, but seemed confident about its future. "What I would say about Wii U - and what Mr. Iwata has said - is that the pace of launches has been slower than we hoped. But as we prepare for E3, the pace of launches for Wii U is going to dramatically increase."He has a point. It's easy to rag on the Wii U now, but remember when everyone thought the 3DS was going nowhere fast? Or the original DS? Or the PS3? Even the Xbox 360 was sorely lacking in exclusives its first year on store shelves. Now if Nintendo announces a Wii U line-up as cracking as its 3DS announcements earlier today, it could still have some fight left in it.

The Wii U version of Injustice: Gods Among Us doesn't support the iOS companion app. After receiving a copy from Warner Bros., Siliconera couldn't sync up the Wii U game with the iOS app and confirmed with Warner Bros. that the functionality is not present.
The Injustice iOS app launched in April and is available as a free download, a hybrid fighter and collectible card game that allows players to unlock content in the console version of Injustice: Gods Among Us and vice versa. The Wii U version of Injustice: Gods Among Us displays a move list on the WiiPad while you play and also allows players to move the action from the TV to the WiiPad through off-TV play.

Nintendo's executive vice president of sales and marketing, Scott Moffit, revealed during a Nintendo event in San Francisco that Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon has sold 415,000 copies in the US, while 3DS RPG Fire Emblem: Awakening has sold 240,000. This data will be reflected in tomorrow's NPD report.
According to Moffit, "the vast majority" of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon sales have come through retail. More than a third of Fire Emblem's sales (80,000) have been through the eShop, with over half of those individuals coming back to purchase a map pack. Moffitt says nine more map packs are planned for Fire Emblem: Awakening, with three of those nine due later this month.

Unusually for Nintendo, a new game revealed in yesterday’s Nintendo Direct was playable the very next day at press events across the globe. Iwata spoke yesterday of this new top-down Zelda’s use of height and volume, so it was apt that our 20 minute play through a single dungeon stage took place atop a blustery, rain-battered building, home to Nintendo’s PR agency. From the ground floor up to the boss battle on the dungeon’s roof, Zelda 3DS feels immediately familiar. Like so much of Nintendo’s 3DS output, the game’s play with depth and perspective invites players to nudge the 3DS’ slider upwards every few minutes. Thankfully, it is perfectly playable in 2D. However determined Nintendo might be to encourage play in three dimensions, 3DS just doesn’t seem destined to excite the games playing public in the same way DS once did.The art style recalls Ocarina of Time 3D; bright cartoonish colours, yes, but none of the characterful cel-shading that lent Link’s wide-eyed DS outings such whimsy. This demo dungeon’s muddle of red and brown perhaps isn’t the greatest showcase for the game’s looks either. Happily, the game’s visuals and perspective are secondary to what appears to be this new game’s headline act. Though the internet has christened this game A Link To The Past 2, expect the game’s official suffix to play on Link’s Merge ability.Tap the A button when Link is standing next to a wall and he’ll be flattened out and sucked right into it. Here Link switches from 3D model to chalky sketch outline – a quirk yet to be explained in a narrative sense, but one which has a clear functional purpose; to offer players an escape route and make them think differently about the tight, efficient spaces in this game’s dungeons.Sword in hand, Link works upwards through the usual enemies and gentle switch puzzles until reaching an apparent dead-end. Having exhausted his options in the default top-down view, Merging allows, for a limited time, Link to explore an alternative plane. It allows him to cross previously unbridgeable gaps and, when you are lead outside to the dungeon’s exterior, to walk inside and around obstacles blocking progression across a series of moving platforms.Swing Link’s mallet – a more familiar tool – down upon the smiling, spring-loaded faces in this dungeon and he can stand upon them, leaping up a floor after a few moments. Link’s bow and arrows are here too, but firing at red and blue switches from a distance has always been part of Link’s adventures. These are early days for The Legend Of Zelda on 3DS; the game is without a final title and this brief demo dungeon might not even appear in the final game, Nintendo’s PR reps tell us. It delivers what one might expect from a new top-down Zelda in three dimensions, with one intriguing new mechanic and some neat plays on depth and perspective. One hopes there is a lot more to come in terms of innovative mechanics, because right now, Merge doesn’t feel like it can carry an entire Zelda adventure by itself.

Nintendo will kick off a year-long marketing push for Pokémon with next month’s Mystery Dungeon game.
The 3DS title, subtitled Gates to Infinity, is getting a three-week kids TV campaign ahead of its launch on May 17th.
It’s the first of many Pokémon releases this year, which climaxes with the launch of Pokémon X and Y in October.
“We are planning a strong yet targeted launch campaign to support this release and really kick start what is a big year for Pokémon,” says Vanisha Kavia, junior product manager at Nintendo UK.
“We will also continuously re-promote the title over the course of the year.”
This TV campaign will be backed by a digital pre-order and social media campaign aimed at existing Pokémon fans and introducing kids to the brand.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity is also going to appear at the Pokémon Brand Tour taking place over the summer.

Is it worth adding a lop-sided $20 piece of plastic to your already-substantial 3DS XL in order to gain a second analog thumb stick? It's a good question and finally one worth asking now that Nintendo has announced that the currently Japan-only Circle Pad Profor the XL will start shipping in the States tomorrow. When we went hands-on last year, we found that it added predictable amounts of girth and also blocked the cartridge port, but compensated by making the handheld more comfortable to use, not least by adding larger shoulder buttons as well as the thumb stick. It's also worth pointing out that the smaller 3DS version of the accessory enabled better controls for left-handed players in Kid Icarus, so there could be some subtler benefits too. We've embedded our hands-on video after the break, so you just need to hold a $20 bill up against your screen and decide which looks better.

It took a hefty price cut and a holiday sales boost to coax the 3DS out of itspredecessor's shadow, but these days Nintendo's autostereoscopic handheld is doing just fine. NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime says it isn't slowing down either, revealing toGamesIndustry that more than 8 million consoles have been sold in the US in the last two years -- beating the original DS' first two years by a million units. Software sales are picking up too. "Life-to-date 3DS game sales surpass 20 million units in the US, and that's just physical," Fils-Aime explains. "It doesn't include digital sales." Both digitaland physical software sales have increased by 55 percent in the last year, and according to Nintendo executive vice president of sales and marketing Scott Moffitt, 11 percent of last year's 3DS games were downloaded from the handheld's eShop. Nintendo's digital escapades may not be perfect, but it's good to see that its downloadable sales pushseems to be paying off.

There must be some kind of unstated rule that Nintendo can never give the US aspecial edition handheld without releasing some Japan-focused models. While the company was busy promising Americans an Animal Crossing 3DS XL of their very own, it was also introducing a Luigi edition 3DS LL for its home country as part of its "Year of Luigi" theme -- not fair, Nintendo. The system is decked out in a camouflage-like pattern that pays tribute to Mario's oft-neglected sibling, and it should ship with a preloaded copy of Mario and Luigi: Dream Team just to drive the point home. Local gamers will get the distinctly-patterned 3DS LL on June 18th, but there's no word on an XL equivalent for the US so far. We'll just have to make do with Mario-colored devices instead.

Nintendo has promised hungry Wii U and 3DS owners that there'll be a dramatic increase in the number of games released for each system as the year progress. Released in 2011, the handheld was initially criticised for its light software line-up, and Wii U's game library is also taking time to flower. But yesterday Nintendo announced a range ofnew 3DS games, and US boss Reggie Fils-Aime told GamesIndustry.biz that the pace of releases "is going to be dramatically ramped up" over the next nine months. The rest of the year is looking equally bright for Wii U, according to the executive. "What I would say about Wii U - and what Mr. Iwata has said - is that the pace of launches has been slower than we hoped. But as we prepare for E3, the pace of launches for Wii U is going to dramatically increase."Additionally, Fils-Aime said Nintendo has seen a significant increase in 3DS game sales this year in the States, with digital offerings playing a strong role."We have 15 Nintendo-published titles available, both physically and digitally [on the 3DS]," he said. "So far in 2013, of those 15 available in this format, 11 per cent of sales have come through full digital downloads of those games."So far in 2013 - through April 15 - 3DS game sales are up 55 percent versus last year, counting both physical and digital."

This week’s Nintendo Direct revealed the Western release of a number of hit Japanese games for 3DS, among them Square Enix’s Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Level-5′s Professor Layton And The Azran Legacy and Atlus’ Shin Megami Tensei IV.Bravely Default will retain its bizarre name as it makes the localisation leap sometime this year. Released in Japan in October 2012, the RPG has sold over 300,000 copies and has been hailed by many as a return to form for Square Enix, with a turn-based combat system similar to Final Fantasy V, lots of voice acting, innovative community features and AR use, plus multiple endings.Ahead of the game’s original release, producer Tomoya Asano spoke to Japanese site 4gamer about how StreetPass had been implemented to enhance gameplay.“It uses three main elements of communication,” he said. “One is the reconstruction of your village. You can accelerate your progress in building item shops and so on by recruiting the characters of people you StreetPass with. It also enables you to buy stronger weapons (from these shops).”He also detailed the Abilink system, whereby you can borrow job classes from your StreetPass buddies. “And the third element is that you can ‘summon’ friends to deliver a powerful blow,” he said. The game also makes use of the 3DS’ AR functionality, with a nine-minute intro where characters prance about your living room. “There are a few other places where you can use AR,” said Asano, “but we’ve implemented it in such a way that you can still proceed if you’ve left your marker card at home.”Just two weeks after Bravely Default: Flying Fairy was released in Japan, a PC-only sequel, Bravely Default: Praying Brage, was announced. Given that “brage” is a word sometimes used in connection with both pornography and violent attacks, let’s hope they change the name of that one if it also heads West.Level-5 has said that Professor Layton And The Azran Legacy will be the puzzle-mad prof’s final outing. And in Japan, while the game sold 130,000 copies in its first week in February, there’s no denying that the series is losing its lustre – there was a time when Layton games would move 300,000 units in their first week. Famitsu gave Azran Legacy a score of 32/40, made up of four 8/10s in its cross-review.

The next 12 months will be crucial in the success of 3DS, says Nintendo.
The firm believes this is the year that it will upgrade customers from DS to its latest portable, thanks to a major year of releases, headlined by Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing, Brain Training, The Legend of Zelda and Pokemon.
The company told MCV that these games will be backed by significant marketing campaigns that include TV advertising.
“Our aim is obviously to upgrade as many DS owners as possible and with our strongest ever software line up and with games which appeal to all of our different audiences, this year really is the year of 3DS,” said Nintendo UK’s marketing boss Shelly Pearce.
“3DS has really come into its own over the last two years. The 2013 software line-up is the strongest we’ve ever had and combined with a diverse back-catalogue that includes both Nintendo favourites like Mario, Professor Layton and Zelda as well as titles like Kid Icarus and Heroes of Ruin or New Style Boutique, there really is something for everyone.”
Commenting on the marketing activity this year, 3DS product manager Roger Langford added: “You can expect to see extensive sampling, heavy weight TV campaigns, significant online activity and a focus on building communities via social media and events.

Software delays on Wii U may frustrate - but Nintendo knows that its long-term success is built on game quality, not "winning" sales wars
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Of the many and varied approaches to PR which have been attempted by game publishers and platform holders in recent years, few have been quite so successful as Nintendo's now semi-regular "Nintendo Direct" broadcasts. Not only has the content being announced generally been of a very high standard - and particularly pleasing to the Nintendo faithful, of course - the presentation style has helped to humanise Nintendo's executives, making likeable personalities out of people in rules traditionally dismissed as "suits" at other companies. Nintendo now enjoys the unique privilege of a devoted following and guaranteed coverage for its broadcasts, along with a halo effect of likeability around the company as a whole - a superb pay-off for a clever but reasonably straightforward approach to PR.
"The presentation style has helped to humanise Nintendo's executives, making likeable personalities out of suits
This week's Nintendo Direct was no exception. It was light-hearted and likeable, but included plenty of impressive, crowd-pleasing news about 3DS software - most notably the announcement of a sequel to 1991's much-loved Zelda game, Link To The Past. Arriving on top of what's already an extremely impressive pile of software in the 3DS pipeline, it's hard to see how 2013 could be anything but a success for Nintendo's handheld; October's Pokemon titles alone should guarantee a Christmas bonanza for the platform, with the rest of the line-up being the icing on the cake.
Even as the 3DS builds and builds towards a market size which many considered impossible only a couple of years ago (my own take was that 3DS would do well but wouldn't rival the ultimate success of its predecessor, the DS; I stand by that, but it looks increasingly possible that I'll be proved happily wrong), rumblings of discontent abound. Nintendo made clear in advance of this week's broadcast that it was going to be about 3DS software, yet the announcement of new titles for 3DS seemed only to deepen dissatisfaction with the slow pace of launches on the Wii U.
This is a merry-go-round with which we're probably all familiar by now - Nintendo launches a new console, there are several months of slow software launches and title slippages, then finally things seem to get into gear and software starts to pour out of the creative floodgates in Kyoto. Apologies are profuse; next time will be better. Next time, of course, is exactly the same. Recently, Satoru Iwata has been criticised - not unfairly - on the grounds of this pattern. "We'll do better next time!" sounds a lot less credible the fourth or fifth time. For new Wii U owners wondering where Pikmin or The Wonderful 101 are, these pledges certainly sound hollow.
While criticism of any company on the grounds of failing to live up to its promises is completely valid - and it is absolutely not the place of consumers to come up with excuses for multi-billion dollar corporate behemoths - I'm not sure that this specific criticism has legs when it comes to Nintendo, at least from a business perspective. It seems to me that it misses the point of what exactly Nintendo is; what exactly the company does, and where its value lies.
"Nintendo would survive the failure of a console platform. It will not survive a sufficiently serious sullying of the Mario brand"
Certainly, if you look at the Wii U right now, it's not doing well. It's probably overpriced, it's certainly lacking in seriously compelling software and it's not building its installed base at the rate it needs to in order to be a sustainable platform for developers. While the 3DS is going great guns (slower in the west than in Japan, but still by no means doing badly), the Wii U is a dark spot for Nintendo - a product which shows all the hallmarks of potential market failure.
That would be bad. Yet there's something that would be worse - much worse, in fact. Imagine a scenario in which Nintendo, shaken by slow sales of the Wii U, reacted by doing what many commentators seem to demand of them - speeding up the release schedule for Wii U software. I have no doubt that, given sufficiently aggressive management and a sufficiently devil-may-care attitude to bugs and balance issues, Nintendo could pump out a number of really big-name titles on the Wii U before the end of the year - possibly even getting all of its biggest franchises represented on the console. This is hardly blue-sky thinking; nearly every developer has experience of seeing a game they worked on being pushed out unfinished to meet a schedule.
The reason Nintendo, thankfully, doesn't do this is because Nintendo's management understands where the value of its company lies. The "Wii U" brand, or even the "Wii" brand, has only been around for half a decade and probably won't be around for much more than another half-decade, at best. This console generation will only last five years, if things go well. The company's character and franchise IP, though, is an extraordinary long-term treasure trove. Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid and the huge range of smaller but much beloved IPs (witness the delighted reaction to Earthbound, a game most people have probably never heard of, or the critical fawning and solid sales of Fire Emblem) are things of exceptional value - but their value lies not in the character art or the trademarks or any of the tangible assets associated with those IPs. Their value lies in goodwill and adoration from consumers, all of which is predicated on the fundamental assumption that when Nintendo puts one of these names on a game box, the game inside is, almost without exception, going to be excellent.
If we work from that basis, understanding that fundamental principle, then we run into a conclusion which is logical, inevitable and yet completely different from any conclusion that we might ever reach about the Xbox or PlayStation businesses. The conclusion is this - it would be better for Nintendo to let the Wii U founder than for it to rush out or otherwise compromise on the quality of its games. Not just "better" in a creative sense - better in a cold, unfeeling, commercial sense. Games and franchises are the core of Nintendo's business; it will, with some effort, survive the failure of a console platform. It will not survive a sufficiently serious sullying of the Mario brand.
"Sony and Microsoft are effectively consumer electronics firms, while Nintendo is a toy company"
Nintendo understands this. I interviewed Satoru Iwata many years ago, just after he had announced the Wiimote controller at TGS, and asked him what he would do if the company's brave and unusual experiment didn't grab consumers' imaginations. His answer was blunt - Nintendo has a lot of money in the bank (it still does, the scale of its financial assets being something of a bugbear among investors), and if the Wii had failed, it would just come up with a new idea and make a new console. The unspoken but implicit subtext was this; "even if the Wii fails, we'll still have Mario, Zelda, Pokemon and all the other things that make us 'Nintendo'". That remains every bit as true today as it was six years ago.
This aspect of Nintendo's thinking can be difficult for those of us more familiar with the traditional console businesses operated by Sony and Microsoft to wrap our heads around - yet it makes perfect sense if you consider Sony and Microsoft to be effectively consumer electronics firms, while Nintendo is a toy company. A consumer electronics firm, pushing a format that it desperately needs to be adopted by third-party content creators (think of the Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD battle), simply must "win" the battle with that format. If it starts losing, it will throw every resource at its disposal behind a push for victory; the single most important thing to that company is the platform, so everything else falls below the singular priority of making the platform into a success. A toy company, however, launches a new toy before Christmas - if it's a huge hit with children, it'll make sure to ship more of them next year, perhaps adding bells, whistles and accessories to the mix, but if it's not a hit? The toy company doesn't go bust, or hope that by launching a new helmet for the space marine, the toy will start to jump off shelves; rather, it devotes itself to inventing a new toy for next Christmas, and the cycle continues.
It's an imperfect analogy, of course, and none of this is to say that Nintendo isn't committed to making the Wii U into a success. Accepting defeat and trying something new is on the menu (whereas it's unthinkable for Sony or Microsoft), but it's far from being the preferred option; Wii U won't go down without a fight. However, in light of so many comments essentially asking, "What on earth are Nintendo thinking, not having X, Y and Z title out on the Wii U already?" - well, this is what they're thinking. They're thinking that the games are more important than the console, in the long term. Despite any frustration this may cause, I think gamers ought to be happy that on this rare occasion, the best commercial interests of a company align so perfectly and neatly with the doctrine of spending as much time as necessary to make the best game possible.

Still waiting for Miiverse to show its hide on Nintendo's 3DS? Maybe the promise of more conventional social networking will tide you over. Thanks to a new web tool, Japanese 3DS owners can now share screenshots from Animal Crossing: New Leaf andTomodachi Collection:New Life with their Twitter and Tumblr followers. The setup is pretty simple, giving users access to a basic upload interface through the 3DS' built-in web browser. Just pick an image, add a caption and watch your retweets roll in. Unfortunately, the tool doesn't work with just any image -- attempting to upload a shot taken with the 3DS camera gave us an error, which told us (via a rough translation) that the picture came from "incompatible software." The tool is written entirely in Japanese, but folks with a knack for Kanji can check it out at i.nintendo.net. Looking for a compatible game? We hear there's a bundle for that.

It's only been a few weeks, but I can't help but feel a little ashamed of my last Joystiq post about Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Reading it from my current, semi-experienced perspective, the piece feels like an excited first-grader telling a long and involved story about learning to tie his shoes. To be fair, my revised take on things comes from a slightly embarrassing wealth of invested time; I've sunk 30 additional hours into the game since my initial column, and when I sat down to write about learning the ropes of MH3U, I'd barely hunted monster one.
Looking back at the knowledge I picked up since then, and the numerous intricacies I've yet to figure out, it dawned on me why Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate has made every other game in my presence go completely neglected. Capcom has refined its specific brand of action-RPG into a trial-by-fire experience that requires constant hypothesizing and experimenting – pure brain candy for us unlucky folks whose minds crave constant stimulation.
Of course, you don't have to take it from me; real academic-type people have picked up on this same value of playing video games – even if said people haven't necessarily jumped on the Monster Hunter train yet. When I taught a college writing course during my grad school days, I used James Paul Gee'sWhat Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy (yes, all academic book titles must be this clunky by law) to inform groups of mostly bored 18-year-olds about how gaming can actually increase our problem-solving skills.

Link has the ability to flatten himself and slide along walls in the upcoming 3DS sequel to the cherished SNES adventure, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Think of it as wallpaper in honor of the protagonist, or as living graffiti defacing the dungeon's interior.
It's a new mechanic (likely one of several) that never felt forced in my ascent up a seven-story tower, and pushed me to think differently about the rigid environment.

The Nintendo Four Score was a controller attachment for the original Nintendo Entertainment System which allowed you to use four controllers at one time. [Simon Inns] wanted to use some original NES controllers on his computer so he developed a drop-in replacement board that converts the device to USB.
As we’ve seen with other NES controller hacks, the hardware uses a simple parallel to serial shift register to deliver key-presses to the console. This means that reading four controllers at a time is no different than shifting in data to a microcontroller from the four different sources. The remaining portion of the problem is providing a USB connection that enumerates the device as a joystick. We’ve seen a bunch of USB projects from [Simon] so it’s no surprise that he was able to pull it off.
He went with the ATmega16U2 which has built-in support for USB. [Simon] wrote the code so that although there is only one USB cable, each of the four controller ports will appear as a separate USB joystick on the computer. To button up the project he carefully measured the original board and laid out his own version so that it fits the footprint of all the original components as well as the mounting brackets on the case. Top notch [Simon]!

With the recent announcement that Earthbound will be making its way to Nintendo's Virtual Console service, confirming that the publisher hasn't totallyforgotten about the series, Mother 3 translator Clyde Mandelin saw an opportunity to extend an offer to Nintendo. Mandelin recently took to theMother 3fan translation blog to express his interest in seeing the Game Boy Advance game officially localized for North American audiences.
"I realize that localizing a game this size can cost a lot, so if it'll help in even the slightest, I'll gladly offer to let Nintendo use my text translation files for any use at all, completely for free," Mandelin wrote. "I'll even edit the files to fit whatever new standards are necessary (content, formatting, memory size, etc.), completely for free. I'll even retranslate everything from scratch if need be. Just whatever it takes to get an official release out."
Mandelin, along with a team of devout Mother 3 fans, launched a patch for the game in 2008 that translates the entire Earthbound sequel to English. Mother 3was originally developed by Brownie Brown, a Nintendo subsidiary now known as 1-Up Studio.
"In the end, if localizing Mother 3 should ever come up in a Nintendo business meeting or whatever and someone brings up budget concerns or it costing too much, my hope is that someone will at least mention this offer too, even if it isn't accepted," he added.

I’ve updated Wii Chatter!
The new version features a few additional keys on the keyboard (including the long request question mark) and may or may not have partial USB keyboard support (USB keyboards don’t seem to be working with any homebrew for me so I can’t really test it until I figure out what that’s about).
The maximum length for a post has been slightly increased.
It automatically refreshes once every 15 seconds (as long as you are scrolled down to the bottom and the cursor is off screen).
It looks different and you can randomize the color scheme at any time by pressing 2 or reset it by pressing 1. If there is demand for it I’ll setup a proper color selection menu and have the color scheme saved and loaded.
The frame rate has improved.
Since I finally updated the libraries I’m using there shouldn’t be any more problems with new Wiimotes and I’m sure there are probably other obscure bugs I’m not aware of that have been corrected.

Nintendulator 0.975 beta (2013/04/20) is released.
Nintendulator 0.975 beta Changelog:
- Nintendulator's sprite evaluation logic has been partially rewritten in order to match behavior observed from Visual 2C02 and actual hardware.

Fceux SVN r2940 is compiled. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.
Fceux SVN changelog:
r2940
* Video config: added "Square pixels" option, enabled by default * Video config: renamed "Use console BG color for empty areas" option to just "BG color" * Video config: added aspect ratio fields for customizing "TV Aspect" ratio, by defaul...

April 22nd, 2013, 22:21 Posted By: wraggster
It's a fantastic time to be a fan of crazy talk. We're living in age where gut-reaction analysis and attention-seeking comments travel faster than thought, and just a quick flick on Twitter is all it takes to catch at least one person making an arse of themselves under your nose. But there's one odd remark that, no matter how much I try to politely ignore, continues to return under my gaze: "the next generation of consoles will be the last".I don't know where to begin with that one. Perhaps the most obvious point to make is that a market which has managed to sustain 240 million consoles (a new record) from three competing companies (ditto) might actually be fairly happy with how things are going. And yes, they're also pretty chuffed with these inefficient £40 beasts called console games no matter how much you throw a passable 69p iPhone game in the mix. What actually annoys me isn't these wild claims themselves, but how those who make them seem so eager to jump from one statement to the next without a moment's pause. Is there not a case that we should stop for a moment and notice that, for example, social gaming has fallen off a cliff? Zynga is going the casino route and EA is busy not commenting on reports about it downsizing its social games division.I'd love to see some of the more radical opinion-formers of this industry provide us with a quick update on previous claims. Like when they claimed Facebook cow clickers would draw investment away from consoles and dominate the market. No time for corrections though; did you hear that mobiles, tablets and smart TVs will kill off consoles? There's another claim that's gone strangely quiet: "handheld games are dead". The problem is that, while it was once a pretty inoffensive and carefree comment to make, the fact that it hasn't happened seems to have been ignored. "The 3DS success is driven by one of the hardest-hitting software line-ups Nintendo has produced in years" Nintendo's 3DS has now sold 30 million consoles in its first two years since launch - a fantastic feat given how close that is to the trailblazing success of the original Nintendo DS (which, by this point, had shifted about 35 million). This success is driven by one of the hardest-hitting software line-ups Nintendo has produced in years, driven by a prodigious amount of work from the company. Today in the UK games charts, it was announced that the critically acclaimed Fire Emblem Awakening has entered at a respectable number three, in what is surely a foretoken to a major string of releases including Pokemon X and Y, Animal Crossing, the next Link to the Past, Mario & Luigi, Bravely Default, etcetera etcetera. There are still some issues with the handheld market, of course, from the fairly poor third-party support to the questions hanging over Sony's PS Vita. But Nintendo has once again proven that it understands its own market much better than the doubters have.Which brings me to the Wii U. Regulars at CVG might be aware that I talk down the console's chances in the most definitive language possible whenever asked. Well, from the things I'm hearing, there's a chance I'll soon be added to the reject bin of crazy talking twitter twonks pretty soon.Hopefully, if we obtain further details from our sources, we'll be in a position to explain more to you soon. But, for now, put it this way: In the past two years there have been moments of disquiet regarding the 3DS and - like an instant magic trick - Nintendo has put an end to this with sudden reveals of significant games that went on to become star performers at Christmas. It's a formula that works wonders and, with Mario, Mario Kart and Zelda games all due this year, clearly not something the Kyoto corporation has forgotten.

Nintendo is set to carry out extended maintenance on its online services today, ahead of the expected release of a significant Wii U system update. As Nintendo detailed last week, the Wii U update will reduce system loading timesand enable users to switch data between two USB drives. The patch will be followed by the launch of the Wii U Virtual Console, which will go live in the US tomorrow, according to a Nintendo of America Facebook post, which suggests that the system update will be released imminently.Nintendo UK's network maintenance information page says:Extended maintenance:From (approx.) Monday, 22 April 2013 21:00 to Tuesday, 23 April 2013 03:00 [1pm-7pm Pacific Time]Affected Services: - Wii U - Nintendo eShop
- Nintendo 3DS - Nintendo eShop
- Wii - Wii Shopping Channel
- Nintendo DS - Nintendo DSi Shop
During the extended maintenance, parts of the affected services may be intermittently unavailable.
Speaking last week during a Nintendo Direct presentation, company president Satoru Iwata said the Wii U update will enable players to "install downloaded software while playing another game, and install updates without being prompted". Software will also be downloaded and installed while the Wii U is on stand-by.

A few months ago I opined that the Wii U's Virtual Console, with its limited launch lineup, limited platforms, and limited upgrades from the Wii Virtual Console, was less than ideal. A few things have changed since then: some of the games have launched (for 30 cents), we have a solid launch date for the service in earnest, and there's a more detailed launch list. However, none of the basic issues have been fixed; the Virtual Console carries the same inherent flaws it did in January.
But for now, all is forgiven. Because Earthbound.

Canadian doctors believe playing Tetris can help children with amblyopia strengthen their lazy eye.
The team at McGill University in Montreal studied 18 adults and found that wearing a special pair of video goggles while playing Tetris helped train both eyes to work together, and worked better than conventional patching of the good eye to make the weak one work harder.
Dr Robert Hess and his team now want to see if this method would be a better way to treat children with the same condition.
In the study, nine volunteers were asked to wear the goggles for an hour a day over a two-week period while playing Tetris. The goggles allowed one eye to see only the falling objects and the other to only see the blocks stacking up at the bottom of the screen.
Another group played the game for the same period of time, but had an eye patch covering their good eye. The results revealed that those who used both eyes had more improvement in their vision than the patched group.
Finally, the news all gamers have been waiting for - video games are good for your eyes.

The lineup for the Wii U Virtual Console, which launches sometime this week, has been announced. It contains eight games, all but two of which were released for the NES. The outliers, Super Mario World and F-Zero, were released for the SNES.The six NES games are: Punch Out!!, Kirby’s Adventure, Ice Climber, Excitebike, Donkey Kong Jr., and Balloon Fight.Note that the Wii Virtual Console contained games from more systems than these two Nintendo-owned consoles. Not only were there Nintendo 64 games, but Sega Master System, Commodore 64, and Neo Geo games, among others.Nintendo has also stated that GameCube games will be coming to the Wii U.

The 3DS story has been one fraught with ups and downs.
A high price, coupled with negative press reports, a poor launch line-up and confused advertising forced Nintendo to cut the console’s price just three months after launch.
The 3DS’ unique selling point – a 3D screen – quickly lost its novelty appeal. The popularity of smartphones was taking its toll. And the press was far from kind. The announcement of the Circle Pad Pro accessory (which added a second analogue stick) was greeted with derision from the media.
Yet now, over two years since that difficult debut, and 3DS is on a winning streak. From Super Mario 3D Land to Resident Evil Revelations, the console now has a diverse library of critically admired software. Sales have risen significantly, particularly in Nintendo’s Japanese homeland. And its release slate for 2013 is arguably its most impressive yet.
“3DS has really come into its own over the last two years,” says Nintendo UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce.
“Along with the strong software line up, the introduction of the Nintendo 3DS XL last year has really helped invigorate the market.
“The Nintendo eShop has also gone from strength-to-strength. Each week we add to the eShop exclusives which are being met with a really positive response by both media and gamers. PullBlox, VVVVV and Dillon’s Rolling Western are all great examples. It also means that people have access to titles at varying price points with games available from £1.79.”
“DS is the largest selling games
console in the UK ever so
there was a lot to live up to." Nintendo UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce
One of the early issues faced by Nintendo was the perception that the 3DS was just another DS, only with a 3D screen. A misconception that Pearce says Nintendo ‘has worked hard to rectify’.
And that’s evident not just in its advertising, but its PR. Nintendo signed Aardman to create Shaun the Sheep short films for 3DS, the BFI were brought on board to encourage budding film makers to create movies using the 3DS, while The Saturdays were hired to promote the 3DS’ 3D camera. All activity to highlight that there’s a lot more to 3DS than a clever new screen.
It appears to be working, but 3DS has a lot of catching up to do if it wants to break from the shadow of its predecessor.
“DS is the largest selling games console in the UK ever so there was a lot to live up to,” says Pearce. “The DS has been on the market since 2005 whereas the 3DS is only two years in, so it’s comparatively young. Our aim is obviously to upgrade as many DS owners as possible and with our strongest ever software line-up and with games which appeal to all of our different audiences, this year really is the year of 3DS.”
It may sound like it, but ‘the year of 3DS’ is more than just marketing hot air designed to convince the trade the console has a decent year ahead. Just look at that release schedule.
Nintendo has dubbed 2013 ‘the year of Luigi’, what with the recent Luigi’s Mansion 2 and the upcoming Mario and Luigi RPG (plus Luigi DLC for New Super Mario Bros U on Wii U). But it’s also the year of Pokémon, and the year that marks the return of Brain Training, Animal Crossing and Donkey Kong.
Best of all for retail, most of these games are launching over spring and summer, two periods otherwise notable for a lack of games elsewhere.
“Summer is traditionally strong for handheld in-store and with the stellar line up in 2013 combined with an increasingly strong back catalogue, 3DS provides a strong in-store proposition,” says Pearce.
“We will see increased focus on key franchises in-store such as Mario, Pokémon and LEGO to further enable retail to capitalise on the buoyancy of the 3DS format throughout the year.”
3DS product manager Roger Langford adds: “We were really excited to kick off our ‘year of Luigi’ with the launch of Luigi’s Mansion 2 and we think this has set the tone for the rest of the year; it scored highly across the board and was positively received by fans.
“Fire Emblem: Awakening looks set to follow in Luigi’s footsteps with the game already getting 9s and 10s. Animal Crossing: New Leaf will be a key focus for us this June – both digital and physical sales in Japan have been incredible. And Pokémon X and Y is definitely going to be a highlight for us in the autumn.” Langford adds that we will see a lot of 3DS on TV this year alongside ‘significant’ online activity.
And sampling events and social media activity will play a big role for the platform holder this year. Meanwhile, Pearce hopes to keep attracting new demographics to the 3DS family, including women.
“We will see increased focus on key franchises
in-store such as Mario, Pokémon and LEGO to
further enable retail to capitalise on the buoyancy
of the 3DS format throughout the year.” Nintendo UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce “Whether it’s Super Mario 3D Land, New Style Boutique, Luigi’s Mansion 2 or the forthcoming Animal Crossing: New Leaf, we’re really starting to build an appealing female proposition.”
By the end of 2012 3DS had shifted 30m units. Nintendo has managed to avert a costly failure and given its handheld some momentum. A feat that bodes well for Wii U.
But the bosses at Nintendo HQ are still not happy.
30m units is still below the firm’s own lofty expectations, and so the pressure is on for 2013’s impressive release slate to deliver the goods. Yet there is optimism around 3DS now that was certainly lacking two years ago.
And there’s still more to come. Nintendo has yet to detail its plans to sell eShop games via the High Street, something the company says it’s planning to do aggressively – and soon. Smash Bros. is coming to 3DS, probably next year. Monster Hunter 4 is also on the way, and there’s bound to be a 3DS specific Zelda game in the works, too.
Nintendo has turned 3DS around. And all it took were some great games, an attractive price point and decent marketing.
Who’d have thought it?

It should be noted, though, that Wii U launched at the end of 2012 and Wii was on sale for the entire period. Wii software sales for the year came to 50.61 million units worldwide. On Wii U, Nintendo reported that Nintendo Land has now sold 2.6 million units globally, with New Super Mario Bros U shifting 2.15 million. Total Wii U software sales reached 13.42 million worldwide. On 3DS, New Super Mario Bros. 2 reached 6.42 million units sold, and Animal Crossing: New Leaf was bought by over three million people in Japan alone. 3DS hardware sales for the year ended March 31stcame to 13.95 million, and total software sales came in at 49.61 million.Net sales were 635.4 billion yen, with 67.1% of that total from overseas sales. Nintendo’s operating loss was 36.4 billion yen, due to the Wii U’s “negative impact” on profits.

Nintendo looks set to stop production of its Nintendo DS handheld in the current fiscal year. Nintendo said today that it expects to sell ten million additional DS software units during the current business year ending March 31, 2014, but it offered no guidance for hardware sales, simply leaving the forecast column blank. To date, the dual-screened portable has sold more than 153 million units, easily making it the firm's best selling console. Only the PlayStation 2 has sold more (155 million).More than 933 million pieces of DS software have been sold since launch almost nine years ago.New Super Mario Bros. is the portable's best selling title at 30 million units, followed by Nintendogs (23.9 million) and Mario Kart DS (23.3 million). The DS was launched in 2004 in Japan and North America, followed by a European release in early 2005.The handheld has seen three redesigns during its lifespan; the smaller Nintendo DS Lite, camera-enabled Nintendo DSi and the larger Nintendo DSi XL.In 2011 Nintendo launched a successor handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. The platform holder revealed in its fiscal 2013 financial results this morning that 31 million 3DS units have been sold worldwide.Nintendo UK is yet to provide official comment.

Wii U sells just 390,000 units since December
Nintendo has returned to profit for the year ending March 31st despite flagging Wii U sales.
The console giant, which last year reported losses of £284 million, generated nearly £47 million in net income for the year, thanks to strong hardware and software sales for the 3DS.
This was still only half of the profits Nintendo had previously forecasted however.
Total revenue for the company reached £4.1 billion, with overseas sales accounting for £2.8 billion, 67.1 per cent, of sales.
The Wii U sold 3.45 million units worldwide, with just 390,000 units sold since December. Total software sales for the Wii U to date are 13.42 million.

Toki Tori 2, the feathered Wii U puzzler that got us chirping, is patching in more hints following critical and community feedback. While Two Tribes feels it provided enough of a helping hand the first time round, the developer says it "noticed a number of people completely missed those hints and got stuck."
The patch, which is surfacing within two weeks' time by Two Tribes' watch, also introduces a new secret area, as well as a number of fixes and tweaks. Two Tribes also has a second, "more involving" patch in the works, but that'll take a while longer to leave the nest.

Road Redemption, a spiritual successor to Road Rash currently seeking funding through Kickstarter, will be ported to Wii U by Dark Seas Games if it successfully secures support.
Dark Seas Games lauded the Wii U's tablet controller as a great tool for local multiplayer, bypassing the need to split the primary screen. The developer also considered support of the Unity engine and the Wii U's 2GB of internal memory as deciding factors for porting Road Redemption.
Road Redemption hopes to launch on PC, Mac, Linux and Wii U in July should it meet the goal of $160,000 on Kickstarter. It has pulled in close to $60,000 so far.

80% of Wii U's worldwide connected to the internet
Nintendo has achieved a record high number of downloads during the last fiscal year.
Speaking on its latest annual report, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said digital sales from its various platforms had doubled on the previous year, generating £104 million.
Iwata noted the deployment of add-on content, sales and titles such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf as the reason for the hike in digital downloads.
The amount of revenue generated through digital sales was also more than £25 million higher than the previous record year in 2010, in which Nintendo accrued £78m.
As well as record sales, the 3DS also broke Nintendo handheld records with an 87 per cent internet connection rate in Japan and 83 per cent in the US, with the number of connected devices continuing to rise.

Publisher opts for more personalized approach with expo floor software demos
Nintendo has taken a pass on this year's E3 press conferences.
Though the publisher has been a mainstay of the trade show for years and last year showed its Wii U console during the Tuesday press conferences, Nintendo has decided to change tactics for this year's event.
"First, we decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told investors in a Q&A session last night.
"Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market. There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media."
The new strategy seems to be about drumming up support for the Wii U's software lineup, and Iwata thinks this requires a more personal touch than the massive press conferences afford.

Nintendo may be skipping a “large scale” press conference at this year’s E3, but that doesn’t mean the publishing giant won’t have a presence there. In fact, they will be having a pair of smaller presentations, as Joystiq reports. Both events will take place on Tuesday before E3 itself, and will have two different intended audiences: the media and investment partners. The latter will be held at the Nokia theater, while the former will take place at Nintendo’s booth on the convention floor so that the media will be able to get hands-on time with the newly announced games.Nintendo Direct will still serve as a source of news from the publisher in the meantime.

April 26th, 2013, 01:00 Posted By: wraggster
It was once mocked for its reluctance to embrace online, but Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has told investors that the company has well and truly embraced the internet revolution.
Iwata confirmed that 80 per cent of Wii Us are now connected to the internet, making it the most connected Nintendo console ever released.
Although that’s no surprise as Nintendo only heard about the internet for the first time in 2012, RIGHT? Moving on…
The serious consequence of this, aside from the added benefits it offers gamers, is that Nintendo can now make a good fist digital retail. And the early results are promising.
“[Digital] sales in the last fiscal year more than doubled from the previous year and became the highest ever, surpassing the record high three years ago,” Iwata told investors. “The deployment of add-on content last year and the digital download sales of packaged software we started last July are contributing to the current sales growth.
“With regard to Animal Crossing: New Leaf we released in Japan last November, many consumers have chosen its download version partly because the game is one that you can enjoy every day over a long period of time.
“The other reason is the short supply of the packaged version of the game for a long time as its sales pace was unexpectedly high, but we could not increase production due to its special memory chip. We are very sorry about this, but we think a considerable number of consumers chose the download version as an alternative to the packaged version.”
But it’s not just playing catch up – Nintendo is actually taking the lead when it comes to the sale of digital goods at retail.
“Since last July, we have been continuing to make both packaged and download versions available,” he added. “A characteristic of our digital business is that we have also sold download versions at retailers in the form of POSA (Point Of Sales Activation) cards on the shelves. Thanks to the fact that retailers do not have to stock actual inventory, some convenience stores, including 7-Eleven, have made POSA cards available.
“We intentionally adopted different methods because, as we mentioned before, we thought that one of the biggest hurdles is the limited exposure of the digital download products. If only the consumers who proactively visited the Nintendo eShop were aware of the digital download software that we deployed, there would be no chance that our digital business would dramatically expand.
And Nintendo has also cracked another myth – that consumers won’t fork out for a digital game if it offers no cost saving compared to physical.
“Some might be sceptical about how much downloadable software would be sold at retail stores without any discounts from the suggested retail price of the packaged counterpart,” he explained. “Actually, however, as you can see, more than two-thirds of the download version of Animal Crossing: New Leaf has been sold through retailers.
“It is not necessarily correct to stereotypically position digital business as an enemy to retailers. Some of the consumers who bought the download version at a retail outlet might have had no knowledge of the Nintendo eShop before. Others might have had some psychological barrier to making online purchases, but chose the download version because they were able to make a payment at a retail store.
“In addition, we have recently started trying to have retailers put download-only software, not the download version of packaged software, on their shelves. I will keep you updated on our progress in future presentations.”
There are long-term benefits to this strategy, too, with Nintendo data suggesting that once a gamer has tried downloading software they are far more likely to do so again.

April 26th, 2013, 01:04 Posted By: wraggster
Saturo Iwata has admitted that Nintendo has failed to create sufficient momentum for both 3DS and Wii U.
However, the resolute exec insists that 2013 will deliver better things for both machines.
“In the US and in Europe we were unable to create sufficient momentum of the Nintendo 3DS system during the holiday season, and so the situation was not looking good at the beginning of the year,” he told investors.
“However, Fire Emblem Awakening was launched in February in the US and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon was launched in March in the US and in Europe, both of which were well received by our consumers. An overseas edition of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was also launched in March. Recently, with the launch of titles like these, we are seeing that the Nintendo 3DS sales are gradually gaining momentum.
“Currently, the overseas sales of Nintendo 3DS are still at a stage where the changes in the market are starting to emerge. We are aiming to make the momentum of Nintendo 3DS in the overseas markets more visible before summer this year.
“As for Wii U, it took off smoothly in the holiday season, but due to the lack of new software titles, we were unable to maintain the momentum this year. We initially hoped that Wii U would be showing more of a presence in the market by now, but the current situation shows that we need to spend more time on and put much effort into recreating the momentum.
“The release intervals of first-party key titles have been so much longer than we expected at the Corporate Management Policy Briefing in January that we have not successfully maintained the momentum of the platform. In addition, we have not been able to solidly communicate the product value of Wii U to our consumers yet, which has been a grand challenge for us.”
Iwata also returned to the company’s failure to properly communicate the Wii U’s features, admitting that the lack of a Wii Sports-type ‘killer app’ was a significant mistake.
“Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product,” he added.
“Wii U might still have no such captivating game title as Wii Sports for Wii, with which people immediately comprehended its product value, but it surely has a lot of factors appreciated by users. We would like to take time to work thoroughly for its penetration, by making various efforts to have many people understand its product value as well as enriching the software lineup.
“Wii U has lost momentum due to the release pace of first-party titles which has not lived up to consumers’ expectations. Starting with Pikmin 3 scheduled for release in the upcoming July, however, we will intensively launch our key titles to give sales momentum to the platform.
“As a decisive factor in buying a console is that you cannot play a much-anticipated title without the hardware, we will do our best to have you feel from this summer to the end of this year that there are plenty of great games for Wii U.
“We have many titles whose release dates are yet to be announced. At E3, we will disclose more specific information about the titles for the rest of this year and early next year.”

We speak to analysts about Nintendo's recent fiscal report and the company's move to give Iwata the additional role of North American CEO
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
Nintendo's recent fiscal report revealed shockingly poor sales for the Wii U console, and while the company did turn a profit, it once again failed to hit estimates. On top of that, the company decided to hand over the North American reins to Satoru Iwata, giving him the additional responsibility of Nintendo of America CEO. What does it all mean for Nintendo, and can Wii U bounce back?GamesIndustry International chatted with several leading analysts to get their takes.
"Nintendo of America's performance the past couple years has been a disaster on almost every level. Much of this was due to lack of execution on basic stuff like product marketing," said David Cole of DFC Intelligence. "They forgot Marketing 101 for the Wii U and no product could have done well without basic marketing support. Clearly a change in execution was long overdue. The damage done is enormous but there is the possibility of a turnaround. The fact is that the general public is not really aware the Wii U even exists so it is an opportunity to almost start from scratch."
Indeed, Nintendo need only look to its 3DS strategy as an example of how the company could potentially fix the Wii U, said Asif A. Khan, CFO of Virtue LLC.
"I still believe Wii U will outsell past flops like the Gamecube, and Nintendo's brands will retain their value for decades to come"
Asif A. Khan
"I believe that 3DS offers a perfect template for how Wii U could succeed in the future," he said. "Nintendo had an equally poor 3DS launch lineup as we have seen with the Wii U. One thing that holds true for most systems they have made, software moves the hardware. Nintendoland was not as compelling and groundbreaking as Wii Sports was in 2006. The wow factor of the Wii U is very hard to advertise on television and with no robust third-party exclusives, the system's launch can definitely be characterized as a flop. This does not mean that the company is going to die."
"Nintendo is projecting a huge 674 percent increase in net income year-over-year and the bar is incredibly low going forward with the last two years being some of the worst financial performances in the company's history. What has given life to the 3DS in recent months is the introduction of high quality first party titles and I believe we will see the same process play out for the Wii U," Khan continued.
"Nintendo's biggest problem right now is balancing quality with quantity of games. It takes time to make high quality games, and they clearly don't want to overspend on this console cycle. This painstakingly slow approach to software development is why the company is still standing today after past weak console cycles. I still believe Wii U will outsell past flops like the Gamecube, and Nintendo's brands will retain their value for decades to come."
EEDAR's Jesse Divnich shares Khan's optimism for Nintendo. "Nintendo expects to sell an additional 9 million Wii U units this fiscal year, which is a positive sign for the hardware. While the past quarter numbers have raised eyebrows, Nintendo's confidence in next year does indicate they likely have a few promotional/marketing programs in the pipeline, along with the strong likelihood of stellar content we've yet to see," he said. "We know Nintendo has been in this position before with the 3DS and they were ultimately able to regain consumer confidence and wallet share. We've yet to see the best Nintendo has to offer for the Wii U. I am reserving long-term judgment on the Wii U until we see stronger first party content released. If a new Super Mario, Smash Brothers, Pikmin or Zelda game are unable to revitalize sales, then I'd begin to be concerned."
Clearly, action is needed to turn things around, and with Iwata now helming Nintendo of America as well, it may be easier to push out a more unified global strategy.
"Nintendo's historically central role in gaming could be permanently diminished if it doesn't execute better in the US in the next 12 months"
Lewis Ward
"The shift in structure likely speaks to a desire to bring Nintendo's Japanese and American operations closer, consolidate its strategic efforts and maximize the opportunities available to the company on a global level," said Scott Steinberg, CEO of consulting firm TechSavvy Global. "With one foot in America and one in Japan, Iwata's leadership may be able to better bridge the gap between audiences and markets, and ensure that the company continues to innovate and deliver high-quality content that appeals to all. The key to rebounding is focus, differentiation, and ability to communicate value - hopefully, Iwata will be uniquely poised and able to draw on the best of both worlds to achieve this goal."
IDC Research Manager Lewis Ward added, "I think Mr. Iwata understands that for Nintendo to grow overall in 2013 and 2014 that business has to bounce back in the US in particular. It's been here where the drop in Wii sales was sharpest in recent years and where iPhones and iPads and so forth have put serious pressure on the 3DS. I read this change in role as a signal that Nintendo's board will keep an exceptionally close eye on US trends in the coming quarters, and will do everything possible to boost Wii U and 3DS performance in the US."
"Nintendo will get a little leaner and meaner in 2013. The salad days of the Wii and DS family are gone and it could very well be that Nintendo's historically central role in gaming could be permanently diminished if it doesn't execute better in the US in the next 12 months."
Even if Nintendo does execute better in the next 12 months, it's going to be facing an incredibly competitive market as new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will likely be on store shelves, noted Billy Pidgeon, an independent analyst who previously worked at Inside Network, M2 Research and IDC. Pidgeon believes "Nintendo's FY 2014 forecasts for Wii U and 3DS are very aggressive relative to sector potential" and he also cautions that "ninth generation will be selling in more slowly across all vendors in comparison with the eighth generation as the console business has changed fundamentally."
It's hard to judge currently what sales volume ninth generation consoles will achieve, but it's ultimately important to keep in mind that Nintendo doesn't need to dominate any "console wars" to be successful. The company has a track record of being profitable, and if you're an investor, that's immensely appealing.
"I got quite a laugh this morning when I read the headline that Nintendo missed their profit expectations. The real headline to me is that Nintendo has returned to profitability," remarked Khan. "Considering many folks in the industry claim that this company is on a colossal death spiral, a weakening yen and new compelling software may prove bears wrong yet again. When the stock market prices a company for death and they don't die, there is usually a lot of upside to being a contrarian."

Having gone live in the US earlier this week, UK Wii U owners will be able to access the console’s new Virtual Console hub as of tomorrow.
Virtual Console allows console owners to download games from previous Nintendo systems and play them on their current machine.
The UK line-up differs from the US offering, missing NES duo Balloon Fight and Kirby’s Adventure but gaining Mario’s Super Picross.
All of the above feature instant saves, off-screen GamePad play and Miiverse community support.
Further releases from the Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros and Mega Man series have been confirmed, as well as the introduction of N64 and Game Boy Advance titles.
NES titles will cost £3.49 to download and SNES titles £5.49. Users who have previously purchased the same games on Wii can either transfer the original over for free and run them in Wii mode or else pay a discounted 99p/£1.49 to get the newer versions.

By skipping the usual media briefing, is the Mario maker adapting to the times or just admitting defeat?
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
On Monday, Nintendo revealed that it will not be participating in annual E3-opening media briefing blitz. Instead, it will be holding separate, smaller events: one for its retail and publishing partners, and another at its E3 booth where a small group of journalists will be invited to play their latest games.
While it's still unclear exactly how different the impact of Nintendo's E3 showing will be without the traditional media briefing, the GamesIndustry International staff pondered a different set of unknowns. With the largest E3 headlines expected to go to new consoles from Microsoft and Sony, just how significant is Nintendo's absence from the media briefing arms race? Does this move speak more toward Nintendo's position in the market, or the relevance of the decade-old E3 formula for an industry in upheaval? And perhaps most fundamentally, is this a wise move on Nintendo's part?
[h=2]Steve Peterson[/h]Nintendo's decision to skip a big E3 event in favor of smaller events and some Nintendo Direct videos seems puzzling. Sure, putting on a big event at E3 is expensive (both in staff time and money), but it's a cost-effective way to reach mainstream media (the gaming press will cover Nintendo news however they get it). Why would Nintendo bow out?
"Nintendo's got a weak hand, so they're trying to play E3 as cost-effectively as possible."
Steve Peterson
I can think of several reasons. First, it is expensive, and Nintendo's trying to hit that 100 billion yen profit goal for the year with Iwata's job on the line. Second, Nintendo's event last year didn't generate the wave of enthusiastic press coverage they were hoping for, so why try again when it didn't work last time? Third, Sony and Microsoft will certainly get lots of attention with brand-new hardware; Nintendo's Wii U is not new and thus will suffer in direct comparison.
It's the direct comparison that Nintendo is looking to avoid, since the Wii U doesn't compare to the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft in raw performance. Plus Nintendo won't have anywhere near as many important new games to talk about as the competition, and certainly the Wii U won't have the level of third-party support the other guys will. Nintendo's strategy is to play it lower key, let the other guys have all the hoopla and spend all the money, and look to get some attention for a few important Wii U software titles.
Nintendo's got a weak hand, so they're trying to play E3 as cost-effectively as possible. There's no way Nintendo would win a direct PR battle at E3; better to save the money and spend it on marketing at Christmas, since sales are the ultimate goal. Nintendo will focus on direct connections with retailers and media, hoping to leave a good impression with minimal spending.

The first of Nintendo's planned Wii U firmware updates went live just yesterday, bringing a much needed speed boost to software load times. And in that short time since, Nintendo's also made its retro-gaming Virtual Console portal available to users, effectively bypassing the need to boot into the Wii emulator for access. The downside to this new, belated convenience is that users will have to re-download any previously purchased Virtual Console titles, though that additional cost is relatively low at $1.00- $1.50 for NES and SNES games, respectively. Unfortunately, you'll still have to wait a bit longer for those beloved Game Boy Advance and N64 classics to make their way to the VC, as Nintendo plans to include those games sometime "in the future." Still, withband-aid number one out of the way for the ailing console and a host of tried-and-true classics now easily accessible, Wii U owners have a little something to tide them over until that late summer Pikmin 3 launch.

Owning a Wii U can feel like an exercise in patience: games and apps can take up to 30 seconds to load, and downloaded software needs to be manually installed. Thankfully, Nintendo heard its fans lamentations, and has issued the first of two major updatesdesigned to mitigate the problem. In addition to dramatically speeding up software load times, the update revises how the Wii U handles downloads and installs. Rather than manually having to install software, the system will automatically update, download and unwrap patches in the background, even if the console is powered down. The system update also puts the finishing touches on the Wii U Virtual Console, which is promised to launch officially in the coming days. Nintendo's old VC can be accessed a little quicker now, too, as the update now allows users to jump directly into thesandboxed Wii ecosystem by holding the B button during start up. All in all, a pretty solid update to a system that needs a little fixing. Check out the full list of changes after the break.

[h=2]Rumor: Japanese trademark suggests Dragon Quest Monsters 2 remake[/h]by Danny Cowan (21 hours ago)
10
A recently registered trademark in Japan hints that Square Enix may be planning to remake its 2001 creature-battling RPG Dragon Quest Monsters 2.
The trademark for "Iru to Ruka no Fushigi na Fushigi na Kagi" – yes, that's twofushigis – translates to "Iru and Luca's Wonderful Mysterious Keys." Iru and Luka were the stars in the Game Boy Color's Dragon Quest Monsters 2.
Dragon Quest Monsters 2 was originally released as a set of two cartridges, as was the popular thing to do back when the Pokemon craze was at its peak. Each cart featured a different playable protagonist and its own unique set of collectible monsters, which players could trade with others via the Game Boy's link cable. Both versions were later released in North America as Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure and Cobi's Journey.
A remake of 1998's Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland launched for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan last year and met with stellar sales. The remade sequel will likely join its predecessor on the Nintendo 3DS, and the trademarked subtitle indicates that it will consolidate content from the two Game Boy Color releases.
A U.S. release for Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D has not been announced.

Nintendo has launched a system software update for the Wii U, adding a new standby function to "download and install software while the system is powered off" and automatic background installation of eShop downloads.
The new software – bringing the Wii U to version 3.0 – also makes system setting changes, which include the ability to "transfer and/or copy between two USB storage devices" and "to select multiple software titles when transferring, copying, or deleting data." The Miiverse channel now supports the Wii Remote, Wii U Pro Controller and the Wii Classic Controller.
The complete list of changes, some of which improve "stability and usability," can be found after the break.

The Miiverse is expanding (just like the universe) and is scheduled to launch on the 3DS this year, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata announced in a financial presentation. Miiverse launched in Bowserbrowser form yesterday.
"We are also planning to make available a system update for Nintendo 3DS to allow its users to view and post content on Miiverse on the system within this year," Iwata said. Nintendo hopes Miiverse on the 3DS will prompt users to "understand the charm of the other platform, Wii U."
Miiverse was initially announced for the Wii U in June 2012 and launched with that console in November. The newest version of Miiverse is accesible via desktops and smartphone browsers, in beta form, currently allowing users to interact with their friends' feeds. It doesn't yet support creating new posts or new accounts, but Nintendo will "enrich the service incrementally."
Iwata wants the browser Miiverse to also influence user perception of the Wii U: "It will play an important role in having those who do not have Wii U understand the appeal of the platform through Miiverse."

After focussing on Sega systems for quite a while, we felt it was only fair to give Nintendo some of the love they deserve. And what better way to do this than with a new issue of the cult classic Super Play magazine.
The first feature we have selected as a preview for this issue looks at just what it takes to create a game from start to finish. The game in question is Syndicate. After this one of a kind feature, we look at the review for the sequel to the NES game Solstice, which is titled Equinox. We also take a look at the shoot-em-up Bio Metal, and last but certainly not least we take a closer look at the platforming sequel to a long lasting shooter series: Pop'N Twinbee.

It’s wonderful news that Nightcrawler has fully inserted a translated script for Glory of Heracles IV for SNES. Looks like a great game.
However Nightcrawler still has a ton of work ahead of him, as pretty much all other aspects of the game still need work. He has mentioned before that, perhaps no surprise to anybody who has tried to play the game before, hacking the menus is going to be a nightmare of work. They feature very intensive use of the SNES’ HDMA effects, and they already look pretty full in the Japanese original. It’ll be amazing to see what Nightcrawler (and DaMarsMan, if he’s still participating) can pull off in the end, though. Nightcrawler hopes to get a menu system that is at least functional off to his translator to play through the game for an additional script check.

When it was released in 2003, my puzzle game BLOX was the first ever complete Virtual Boy homebrew game. Today, 10 years later, it also becomes the first ever Virtual Boy homebrew to be released complete-in-box!
More information and order info can be found in our forum.
My complete share of each of the limited run of 50 copies will go towards bigmak to help compensate for the costs of the Faceball release, so you'll even do something for a good cause when getting yourself a copy.

No DS slot cart plays GBA ROMs" was once the statement that echoed around these forums on a fairly regular basis. However that was before enhanced flash carts turned up and when the dust settled there it was the DSTwo that came out on top. It had a GBA emulator called NDSGBA and though it was far better than many would have hoped the GBA emulation on the PC and other devices had been near flawless for years and GBA flash carts were equally high performing. You could still play a lot of the spectacular GBA library but there were notable exceptions and drawbacks.
However following a little bit of community action the sources for NDSGBA were released and the TempGBA project was kicked off in earnest under the care of Nebuleon. Yesterday saw a new release that is something of a milestone with some nice speed improvements all on top of the massively enhanced GUI that the project got early on.

via http://www.aep-emu.de/
A new version of the multi-system emulators RetroArch (formerly known as SSNES) is released for Windows, XBOX, WII, PS3 and XBOX360.
SSNES is called RetroArch from now on, and ´libsnes´ is called ´libretro´ from now on.
Quote:
What is RetroArch?
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is designed to be fast, lightweight, and portable. It has features few other emulators frontends have, such as real-time rewinding and game-aware shading.
What platforms does it support?
RetroArch sets the standard on cross-platform portability right now.
Linux (x86 and x86_64)
Windows (32bit/64bit)
Mac OSX (PPC/Intel)
Playstation 3 (PS3 SDK/PSL1GHT (WIP))
Xbox 1 (XDK)
Xbox 360 (XeXDK/Libxenon)
Wii
Raspberry Pi
OpenPandora
Why is it special?
Right now RetroArch is unique in that it runs the same emulator cores on multiple systems (such as Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC, etc).
For each emulator ´core´, RetroArch makes use of a library API that we like to call ´libretro´.
Think of libretro as an interface for emulator and game ports. You can make a libretro port once and expect the same code to run on all the platforms that RetroArch supports. It´s designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind so that the porter can worry about the port at hand instead of having to wrestle with an obfuscatory API.
The purpose of the project is to help ease the work of the emulator/game porter by giving him an API that allows him to target multiple platforms at once without having to redo any code. He doesn´t have to worry about writing input/video/audio drivers - all of that is supplied to him by RetroArch. All he has to do is to have the emulator port hook into the libretro API and that´s it - we take care of the rest.

Project64 Git (2013/04/28) is compiled. Project 64 is a proprietary Nintendo 64 emulator for Windows. It employs a plug-in system that allows third-party software developers to create their own implementation of a specified component. Project64 allows the user to play Nintendo 64 games on a computer by reading ROM images, either dumped from the read-only memory of a Nintendo 64 cartridge or created directly on the computer as homebrew. Project64 started as an exercise by Jabo and zilmar in an attempt to see if they were capable of programming a Nintendo 64 emulator. It's open source now.
Project64 Git Changelog:
* Project64: 2.1.0.1
* Glide64: 2.0.0.1
* Project64: 2.1.0.1

GameBoy Online (2013/04/26) is released. GameBoy Online is a Game Boy and GameBoy Color emulator written in Javascript. It strives to be efficient and try to have a perfect compatibility. Currently the execution speed is not optimal even on browsers. For example on Chrome, which is nevertheless deemed to run Javascript faster on a PC running Windows 7 64-bit version with a double heart 2 CPUs at 2.2 GHz, games run at normal speed but almost skipping some frames.
The sound production is still experimental and rather poor quality. The video portion is by HTML5 or by creating images with BMP string URI. State backups are implemented using the object window.localStorage and are serialized / deserialized JSON. Ditto for backup SRAM.
GameBoy Online Changelog:
- new settings added to allow enabling and disabling channels.

DeSmuME Wii SVN r253 is compiled. DeSmuME Wii is a port of the Nintendo DS emulator DeSmuME to Wii homebrew. This project aims to port DeSmuME to Wii homebrew so that we can have a fully fledged, working, Nintendo DS emulator on Wii. It is being built with DeSmuME 0.95 and the latest available devkitPPC and libogc releases.
DeSmuME Wii SVN Changelog:
r252
Two words: Paired. Single.
That's right. I got tired of waiting. I created paired-single versions of ALL of
the matrix functions. On average they run about 40-50% faster. This has been in
the works for a long time. There isn't any noticeable speed up that I could
find, but it's there, and a preview of things to come.
r253
Changed some formatting, fixed a few things, and included some code that might
potentially generate shadows (we'll see).

Fceux SVN r2942 is compiled.

Ubisoft's hotly anticipated open world sci-fi hackfest Watch Dogs will be on shelves this November.
A new trailer for the game, which you can view below, confirms PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC owners will be able to get their hands on it on November 22nd.
As reported earlier, it will also be a launch title for PlayStation 4, and is "planned for other next generation consoles" (yeah, we reckon they mean that one).
And, as is often the case these days, it will arrive in the form of multiple wallet-emptying SKUs. In addition to the standard game, there are four special editions that come bundled with a variety of physical and digital content.
The Dedsec Edition comes with a figurine of hacker protagonist Aiden Pearce, an artbook, soundtrack, map of Chicago, collectible Augmented Reality cards, badges and a collector's box. Bundled DLC includes three single-player missions: Palace, Signature and Breakthrough.
The Dedsec Edition will be available at selected UK retailers, while the Vigilante Edition will be exclusive to GAME in the UK and GameStop in Ireland. This SKU includes the game's soundtrack, the downloadable Palace mission and Aiden Pearce's cap and mask for players to wear. GAME will also exclusively stock the Special Edition, comes with the downloadable Breakthrough mission.
Finally, the Uplay Exclusive edition will be – you guessed it – exclusive to Ubisoft's online store uPlay. It will come in a Steelbook case and include codes for all three downloadable bonus missions.

Nintendo's US online store is selling refurbished handheld consoles.
DS and 3DS units with 'minor blemishes' are available to buy directly from the firm at a slightly reduced price.
It's similar to Apple's refurbished store, which sells Macs, iPads, iPhones - often ex-models - at more affordable prices.
And like the Apple store, Nintendo is offering a full year's warranty on the products.
There are currently no plans to offer the same service in the UK and Europe at this time, a Nintendo rep told MCV.

Call of Duty: Ghosts, which recently appeared to have been outed by various retailer listings and promotional material, may be headed to Wii U and PC as well as Xbox 360, PS3 and next-gen consoles. That's according to since pulled product listings on Spanish retailer Xtralife's website (via Joystiq). While previous leaks pointed to a November 5 launch for the unannounced game, Xtralife's listings carried a November 11 release date.Activision told us last week that it wouldn't be commenting on Call of Duty: Ghosts reports, but the game is rumoured to be set for an official reveal on May 1.According to a now removed Tesco product description, "Call of Duty: Ghosts ushers in the next generation of the franchise, delivering a riveting all-new gameplay experience built on an entirely new story, setting and cast, all powered by a new next-generation Call of Duty engine."Among other rumours, Call of Duty: Ghosts is said to be set in the future, but a major plot event forces the characters to use modern day weaponry, while the Modern Warfare series' Spec Ops mode is said to have been dropped in favour of a new game mode.

Three years ago indie developer Jay Pavlina released the brilliant retro throwback Super Mario Crossover, in which you could play the original Super Mario Bros. as various well known characters from that era such as Link, Samus or Mega Man. Amazingly, each characters' special abilities were tailored to their powers from their source material and rejigged in such a way that it would fit the level's framework. As it turns out, smacking one's head isn't the only way to break a brick as shooting them or stabbing them with a downward thrust is equally effective. Now Pavlina and his studio, Exploding Rabbit, have released a trailer for the third iteration of the fan-favourite spin-off series. Due this May or June, Super Mario Bros. Crossover 3.0 will feature background assets from Super Mario Bros. 2, Castlevania and an Atari-style filter, while you'll be able to play as stranger folks like the sorta pyramid-shaped piece in Tetris.

Nintendo has booked a TV and online campaign to push Donkey Kong’s 3DS debut.
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, a new version of the 2010 Wii hit, is released on May 24th and is backed by social activity and online ads on gaming and kids sites.
Nintendo has also booked TV ads around kids and housewives programming. These ads will run after the game's launch to drive longer tail sales.
There will also be continued advertising in print and online.
“We want to make sure that everyone knows that Donkey Kong is back.” said Nintendo UK product manager, Roger Langford.
"Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is yet another huge release in 2013 for Nintendo 3DS. Retro Studios has done an incredible job of replicating the classic gameplay of previous Donkey Kong titles on SUper Nintendo, whilst at the same time bringing them up to date and adding many new twists and turns.
"Donkey Kong titles have always been enjoyed by all ages for generations and we expect this one to be no different."

Console giant looks to browser game and Unity developers to expand Wii U software range
Nintendo is betting on its HTML5 development framework to help greatly expand the roster of games for the Wii U.
Speaking in a financial briefing Q&A, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said the number of developers who can use web technologies such as HTML5 and Javascript was 100 times larger than the range of developers for dedicated consoles.
Iwata claimed that since its GDC reveal of the web framework, the company had already received hundreds of inquiries from developers interested in using the web framework. He added that a small development team would update the tech constantly, and that it had enabled the console giant to “significantly reduce development challenges”.
It is hoped that widely available tools for relatively easy game development will help improve the number of titles released on the Wii U as Nintendo continues its hunt for third-party support and also tries to allocate sufficient resources to its own projects, which Iwata admitted it has struggled to do.
“The number of developers who can use versatile web technologies such as HTML5 and JavaScript is probably more than 100 times larger than that of the current software developers for dedicated gaming machines,” he said.

Games such as Pikmin 3 delayed and understaffed as developers shifted attentions to priority titles
Nintendo miscalculated the development resources required for its Wii U launch titles, the company’s president has admitted.
Speaking in a financial briefing Q&A, Satoru Iwata said development of some of its titles had required more resources than it had previously expected, and it was then forced to take developers working on other projects in an effort to complete them in time for the console’s launch.
He added that as a result, development of titles such as Pikmin 3 and other titles to be released in future were “understaffed” during this period as the company rushed to finish its games in time for the Wii U’s launch, causing subsequent delays.
To date, Nintendo has developed titles such as Super Mario Bros. U and Nintendo Land the Wii U, as well as a number of 3DS titles in the past year such as Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Super Mario Bros 2.
“The reason for the delayed release of our first-party titles was the fact that completing the games released at the same time as the launch of Wii U required more development resources than expected, so some staff members from development teams working on other titles had to help complete them,” said Iwata.
