[h=2]Nintendo insiders speak: How Microsoft and Sony were a handshake away from thwarting the Wii, and how its motion controller was born on an airplane[/h]In 1998, a journalist for The New Yorker asked Bill Gates which of Microsoft's competitors he feared the most. "I fear someone in a garage who is devising something completely new," he replied.
Gates's belief was that there is no greater disruptive force than innovation. The biggest business rivals continually smash against each other in a war of attrition, but nothing has more potential to upend the entire system than a bold new invention.
Initially, before pitching to games firms, Tom Quinn first used gyroscope technology to control aircraftThree years later, just months after Gates handed control of his software empire to Steve Ballmer, one such unknown garage inventor was knocking on the company's door with an idea that would change videogames forever. Microsoft declined his offer. His name was Tom Quinn, a serial inventor based in California who, in certain obscure corners of the internet, is described as "the man who invented the Wii". That's not an accurate statement, of course, but it's not an entirely false one either.
In September 2001, Nintendo quietly bought a minority stake in Quinn's company, called Gyration. The reason was because the American entrepreneur had a worldwide patent on gyrometer-based motion control technology, and had researched the field for a number of years.
As part of the acquisition, Nintendo was granted licenses to use Quinn's motion control tech, as well as take advantage of his technological know-how. The business partnership, though momentous in retrospect, went largely unnoticed. Only one news outlet appears to have covered it."I pitched the Wii's motion control tech to Steve Ballmer first, he loved it." Through this deal Nintendo embarked on a new chapter in the company's history - one that would result in unimagined commercial success along with a vitriolic backlash from its core community. But the story of the Wii began, in fact, on one day in the late '80s, when Quinn was flying a Cessna 172 private airplane across America. As his mind wandered while he was miles up in the sky, he began to assess the control systems he was using.

Square Enix has released the first in-game screenshots of Dragon Quest 7 on 3DS.
The direct-feed screens, surfaced on Japanese site 4Gamers (thanks NeoGAF), showing villages, dungeons and a glimpse at the game's traditional battle system.Square Enix confirmed last month that the PSone classic was getting remade and enhanced for 3DS, due for release in Japan on February 7.
ArtePiazza, who has previously worked on DS remakes of classic DQ games, is handling development on the 3DS title, renamed Dragon Quest VII: Warriors of Eden (according to reported translations).
Square is yet to detail release plans outside of Japan, but with previous remakes getting international releases, its a safe bet to assume this won't stay Japan-only for long.

The Nintendo Wii U GamePad -- aka "that tablet-looking controller from Nintendo" -- is a strange beast. Perhaps that 6.2-inch resistive screen out front made you think it's a tablet? It's not a tablet. Perhaps those dual analog sticks and slurry of buttons made you think it's a game controller? It's certainly not just a game controller. Of course, that's not stopping us from making both comparisons. Below you'll find a hybrid of our usual "fight!" structure, with one gallery dedicated to comparing the Wii U GamePad against its distant tablet-based cousins, and another comparing the GamePad to its controller side of the family. Wondering just what we think of the GamePad and Nintendo's new console? We'll have a full review of the Wii U -- and its bizarre hybrid controller -- early next week. We've got some early impressions of what's already impressed us, and an extra close look at the Wii U game discs as well, if you just can't wait.

Wii U has only a few more days before launch in the US, and if you didn't pre-order, it could be tough to buy one, as sales have been brisk. Nintendo of America's Scott Moffitt, executive vice president of sales and marketing, told GamesIndustry International that the $349 Deluxe Set version in particular has been a very hot item.
Despite some concerns over hardware pricing possibly being too high, Moffitt asserted that consumer demand is what matters, and consumers have been telling Nintendo that the price is indeed right.
"All I can say is that the response has been phenomenal and we're getting, especially in the higher priced deluxe set, that one's selling out incredibly quickly. That seems to indicate that the pricing's in a good spot and the proof is in the consumer response," Moffitt remarked in an interview to be published in full tomorrow.
While shortages were a huge problem for the original Wii's launch, Moffitt is expecting Nintendo to do a much better job on replenishment this time around. That doesn't mean it'll necessarily be easy for walk-ins at Walmart or Best Buy to just pick one up any day of the week without a pre-order.
"Certainly we've seen brisk pre-sales and that the phone calls have been coming into our headquarters for quite a while now asking for more and so we do expect high demand. But I can tell you this - on opening week we will have more systems on hand for the Wii U than we did for the launch of Wii. And, second, our replenishments will be more frequent this holiday time than during the Wii launch," Moffitt noted.
"But, having said all that, it's impossible to exactly predict demand, and so I can't say that we won't have some shortages out there and that people won't have to be a little patient with the replenishment truckload and shipments and boatloads to arrive."
Stay tuned for the full interview with Moffitt in which we discuss launch window planning, tablets, Nintendo's financials and more.

Two Tribes says it'll be "focusing on Steam (PC/Mac)" versions of the game after with Wii U launch, but offered no ETA.

Scribblenauts creative director and 5th Cell co-founder Jeremiah Slaczka has revealed that the Wii U will not have its own universal achievements system.
Posting on NeoGAF, Slaczka wrote that "there are no Wii U accomplishments that are system-wide".He continued to write that Scribblenauts will have its own in-game achievement tracker in the form of 'Flobal Starite Shards'. These are "like a giant checklist of global things to spawn and do in the game that aren't area specific," he wrote.
Sony introduced its trophy achievements in a post-launch system update, so it's not unfeasible that Nintendo will have achievements down the track. For now though, it'll be up to individual developers to create their own.

Turning on an Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 / Nintendo Wii:
- Walk to living room, pick up television controller.
- Turn on television, select input / applicable volume / etc.
- Put down television controller.
- Pick up gamepad. Turn on power.
- Select profile.
Five steps. Let's compare this to Nintendo's new console, the Wii U.
- Walk to living room, pick up Wii U tablet controller.
- Press TV button on controller, power on television, select input / applicable volume / etc., power on console.
- Select profile.
Just three! At the risk of sounding like late-night TV pitchmen, we must emphasize how important this is. It remains impressive after days of using the console at home. Ever since we (as a society) first plugged computers called "gaming consoles" into our televisions, we've been following an archaic process of swapping remotes and pushing buttons and all sorts of needless busywork. Nintendo's Wii U tablet controller thankfully streamlines that process in a small, but tremendously meaningful way: during initial console setup, you're prompted to sync your television and the tablet controller, allowing the tablet itself to control the TV's power, volume, channels, and input directly.
And let's pause to emphasize the importance of this step as part of the initial console setup, rather than background functionality to be sussed out later on -- this fundamentally transforms how the vast majority of soon-to-be Wii U owners will interact with their Wii U. The console instantly becomes the de facto media unit, interacting with your cable box, DVR, and various digital streaming offerings, as well as directly controlling your television.

November 12th, 2012, 22:20 Posted By: wraggster
Wii U launches next week in the US, and Nintendo is anticipating big sales throughout the holiday. In fact, according to research firm IHS Screen Digest, the Wii U will actually outpace the original Wii's holiday sales start with 3.5 million units sold between November and December, which would represent a 12 percent jump over the Wii's start of 3.1 million sold.
“Pent-up demand from Nintendo evangelists, many of which were introduced to the console market through the success of the Wii, is predicted to drive this explosive start,” the firm stated in its report.
While Wii U will be a hot seller this holiday and will be in short supply at most big box retailers, the momentum is expected to slow in 2013, as Nintendo faces even stiffer competition from price cuts on competing hardware.
“This time around, Wii U's pure innovation, coupled with a limited volume of high-quality Nintendo software, will not be enough to drive the ongoing sales momentum we witnessed with the Wii console, especially at a higher price point,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, senior principal analyst and head of games at IHS.
“Long-term success depends on ongoing consumer engagement delivered through the constant release of high-quality content from both first and third parties, a competitive non-games entertainment proposition and a sound digital and online strategy to go along with such innovation. Nintendo is still some way short of delivering a comprehensive engagement-led value proposition at the launch of the Wii U.”
Ultimately, while the Wii U will post some solid sales figures during its lifetime, it's going to have a pretty difficult time coming anywhere close to the incredible success of the original Wii. IHS forecasts that Wii U will reach approximately 70 percent of the Wii's sales volume in the first four years after release. The Wii managed to sell 75.9 million units during its first four years, but the Wii U is predicted to sell around 53.2 million units.

November 12th, 2012, 21:37 Posted By: wraggster
The Wii U arrives in the US this weekend, but one leading analyst has claimed Nintendo will need to up its game if it wants the new console to replicate the success of its predecessor.
IHS Screen Digest analyst Piers Harding-Rolls does, however, believe that Wii U will have a more immediate impact than Wii achieved, predicting sales of 3.5m Wii U consoles by the end of the year. Wii managed 3.1m sales in the same time period in 2006.
However, Harding-Rolls remains less certain of the console’s long-term potential. In fact, he forecasts that Wii U sales over its first four years will only reach around 70 per cent of the Wii's.
“This time around, Wii U's pure innovation, coupled with a limited volume of high-quality Nintendo software, will not be enough to drive the on-going sales momentum we witnessed with the Wii console, especially at a higher price point,” Harding-Rolls stated.
“Long-term success depends on on-going consumer engagement delivered through the constant release of high-quality content from both first and third parties, a competitive non-games entertainment proposition and a sound digital and online strategy to go along with such innovation.
“Nintendo is still some way short of delivering a comprehensive engagement-led value proposition at the launch of the Wii U.
"How the company executes on these new initiatives will have a substantial impact on the Wii U's ability to maintain its market relevance past the launch phase when competing with the burgeoning choice of connected devices that serve.”

Owen offers version 1.5 " Newo Asteroids "space shooter game for the Nintendo Wii.
Quote:
I fixed some bugs Mentioned yesterday; * The target cursor was off center Whenever it was at 45 degree angle Because it was stuck to the 2d screen. I put it in the 3d world now Which makes it a little awkward shoulds purpose it still work as long as you do the point to the very edge of the tv. The target cursor shows the Amount of aussi "energy rings" you have collected and turns red if you are currently over heated and cooling down. The target cursor no longer uses cursor.png Because it loses transparency icts if I stretch it in the 3d world. * Added Which Hard mode enemies to double the 300 and Reduces the asteroids to 500 making the game more of a resource grab and bullet hell than before. I clear out the area around the player When You start in Hard or Easy difficulty Because it was getting to the fire escape just as you start playing. Easy mode HAS more asteroids, less enemies and no over heating. Normal is normal. * Added a new achievement called "50k wildfire" for 50.000 shoot bullets. It accumulates across game so it shoulds be easy to complete. Now I have a total of 21 achievements. * Music shoulds Correctly loop now. * Doubled the distance I que le "Journey" achievement takes to complete. Its now 10.000 pixels. * Also Note That I cannot really test the game in dolphin Homebrew or if you are so filter HAVING framerate issues then you are out of luck. * You score one on screen by default now. Anyway thats pretty much all thats changed. It will be out by the weekend.

smealum offers " FPS Maker ", which as its name suggests, is a utility that will allow you to create your FPS directly from your DS / DSi ...
Provided follow the official tutorial => http://www.neoflash.com/forum/index.....html#msg53284
Quote:
FPS Maker is in essence a first person shooter-type game for the DS engine Accompanied by year embedded level editor. The idea is to allow people to make Their own games on the go.
The current version is functional but not quite full as A Few features are missing from the editor itself (the material editor mostly) and a whole lot of the engine's features are only Partly Implemented. Nevertheless, I was ble to use the editor in this morning to create only a FEW hours ACOTSYE.

smealum offers " A Cup of Tea - Super Yeti Edition "FPS achieved using the utility" FPS Maker . "
Quote:
ACOTSYE is a first person shooter made with my "FPS Maker" engine, which i am Entering aussi. Unfortunately, I Had to rush development to get it "ready" in time for the competition, so it's quite buggy, and a lot of things can / will be Improved, Including performance. However, this game Does feature a lot of nice things Such as lightmapping (very basic for now) dynamic lighting for enemy models, smooth interpolated animations and more.
It's aussi a "remake" of a game lobo and I made a while ago named ACOTV8RE. While V8RE was unable to finish for MOST people, I hope you'll find this one to be more accomodating, while still quite a challenge Remaining. Most of the graphics for this game Were Made by lobo! The Yeti model I found a FEW years ago and can not remember where, so I do not know who made it. ~ ~ Sm-43.gif Controls: - ABXY / D-PAD to move - Touch screen to aim - R / L to shoot - Select to open doors I included a nitroFS Both version and only a FAT version, just in case.
