Flipnote Studio 3D, Nintendo's free, three-dimensional animation software for the 3DS, will be available on the North American eShop sometime in "early August," according to the software's newly launched official English website.
As is the case with Flipnote Studio 3D's Japanese counterpart, users will be able to export their animations to one of two networks: Flipnote Gallery: Friends and/or Flipnote Gallery: World. Usage of the Friends network is free and allows the user to share their animations with their 3DS buddies, whereas the World network is a paid service accessed by a global community of users.
The subscription fee is $0.99 for 30 days of access. Additionally, the app comes with a free 30 trial period, and the World network is freely available every day between 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. local 3DS time. The user can also earn Coin Points and Collector Points by submitting and evaluating Flipnotes, which can lead to free months of playtime if they're awesome enough at either activity.

After 11 long months we are thrilled to announce the release of ScummVM 1.6.0.
It's not very often (if ever) that we add 4 new engines in a single release, but yes, these have been busy months for the team indeed.
Let's just list the new games 1.6.0 contains for you:
- 3 Skulls of the Toltecs
- Eye of the Beholder
- Eye of the Beholder II: The Legend of Darkmoon
- Hopkins FBI
- Tony Tough and the Night of Roasted Moths
- The Journeyman Project: Pegasus Prime
Other significant features include support for the Macintosh version ofDiscworld 1 and the music in the Macintosh versions of LucasArts adventures, an update to the latest Roland MT-32 emulation code, a new cool grid chooser for your savegames, an extended FluidSynth configuration dialog, and major bugfixes to bike fights in Full Throttle. We have also added Belarusian, Finnish and Galician translations to our GUI.
Of course, there is much more; you can find the full list in our release notes and the release itself on our downloads page.

After some time of this game being limited to those who actually owned the game, or those who didn’t mind constantly using save states, this game is now fixed and available for all to enjoy.
This game is a Famicom remake of the original Resident Evil that uses some aspects of Resident Evil Gaiden.
On this game, only Jill is a playable character.
This hack was done by an unknown person.

First of all no this isn't DIOS MIOS because that would never work.
This is written pretty much from scratch and there are still many issues especially with the sound that's why I overlayed a nice music track.
There is obviously no way to use a GC controller on a Wii U and getting wiimotes/CC to work is way too complicated, so what I am using here is a PS3 controller connected via USB.
The Mega Man 10 channel is just my lazy way of loading sneek, don't need any fancy banners

via http://www.aep-emu.de/
A new version of the multi-system emulators RetroArch (formerly known as SSNES) is released for Windows, XBOX, WII, PS3 and XBOX360.
SSNES is called RetroArch from now on, and ´libsnes´ is called ´libretro´ from now on.
Quote:
What is RetroArch?
RetroArch is a modular multi-system emulator system that is designed to be fast, lightweight, and portable. It has features few other emulators frontends have, such as real-time rewinding and game-aware shading.
What platforms does it support?
RetroArch sets the standard on cross-platform portability right now.
Linux (x86 and x86_64)
Windows (32bit/64bit)
Mac OSX (PPC/Intel)
Playstation 3 (PS3 SDK/PSL1GHT (WIP))
Xbox 1 (XDK)
Xbox 360 (XeXDK/Libxenon)
Wii
Raspberry Pi
OpenPandora
Why is it special?
Right now RetroArch is unique in that it runs the same emulator cores on multiple systems (such as Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PC, etc).
For each emulator ´core´, RetroArch makes use of a library API that we like to call ´libretro´.
Think of libretro as an interface for emulator and game ports. You can make a libretro port once and expect the same code to run on all the platforms that RetroArch supports. It´s designed with simplicity and ease of use in mind so that the porter can worry about the port at hand instead of having to wrestle with an obfuscatory API.
The purpose of the project is to help ease the work of the emulator/game porter by giving him an API that allows him to target multiple platforms at once without having to redo any code. He doesn´t have to worry about writing input/video/audio drivers - all of that is supplied to him by RetroArch. All he has to do is to have the emulator port hook into the libretro API and that´s it - we take care of the rest.

RiceVideo Git (2013/06/02) is compiled. RiceVideo is an open source video graphic plugin for N64 emulators. All windows-based emulators with plugin support (1964, Project64, Mupen64plus).
RiceVideo Git Changelog:
* Whoooops forgot to add the simpleini.h file to the build
* Change it so we storing the cache file in the actual texture pack folder rather than in a new cache folder.
* Ok, fixed loading in of textures via our cache file, stupidly wasn't storing the foldername so it tried to find the textures in the root directory of each texture pack.
this should work an awful lot faster than reading information from each and every image
* basic testing of actually caching texture information, dumping works perfectly. Loading on the otherhand...
Im doing something wrong, just cant quite put my finger on it.
This is definitely not the most efficient way to handle it of course

Big news about the game that many Wii U owners have been frantically waiting for could be nearly upon us.
The creator of cult franchise Bayonetta, Hideki Kamiya, has said on Twitter that those waiting for more information about Bayonetta 2 should check out Nintendo’s upcoming Nintendo Direct, currently scheduled for June 11th.
Bayonetta 2 was named as a Wii U exclusive in September of last year.
While a critical hit, the first game was far from a commercial success but its commitment to Wii U was very much seen as a call to action for Nintendo, proving its renewed focus on the core games market.
In fact, developer Platinum later revealed that the game would not be in production at all were it not for Nintendo’s backing.

There's confusion over whether Batman: Arkham Origins' pre-order bonus Deathstroke DLC will be available on Wii U.A new advert promoting the pre-order DLC notes that the add-on will "not be available on all platforms", Nintendo Life spotted (via NeoGAF).A logo boasting of the Deathstroke DLC's inclusion is missing from the Wii U box, but included for the game's PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. The pack's initial press release also only spoke of the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.It all seems fairly concrete then, except for the fact that some retailers, including Amazon, specifically mention the Deathstroke DLC on the game's Wii U page. It's hard to imagine the DLC missing for any other of the game's platforms, however. We've asked publisher Warner Bros. for confirmation. The Deathstroke DLC includes two extra challenge maps and two Deathstroke player skins. It's free for anyone who pre-orders the game.If true, Batman: Arkham Origins would be the latest in a string of big multiplatform releases to hit Wii U without all of its DLC content. Mass Effect 3 on Wii U skipped the game's Omega and Citadel expansions, while Need for Speed: Most Wanted's only DLC offering was the game's first pack. Both titles included the content as part of the base game. The Wii U version of Sniper Elite V2 is missing its add-on content.

Nintendo is taking the Wii U on vacation, hosting hands-on exhibits in six cities across the nation now through September 2, starting at Disney restorts in California and Florida. The tour brings Wii U games including Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros. U, Lego City Undercover, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate andNeed for Speed Most Wanted U to a "living room setting" filled with various Nintendo props.
The Wii U exhibit stops by Downtown Disney at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, from June 5 to June 23, and it's live now at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, also through June 23, according to the event page. Next up are stops at the Navy Pier in Chicago, Illinois, and in Bloomington, Minnesota, from June 28 to July 21. From August 10 to September 2, the tour goes to Boston, Massachusetts, and Hollywood, California.
If your vacation plans include any of these cities during the Wii U tour, maybe bring some extra hand sanitizer and give the console a whirl.

The Makers of the soon to be released 3DS Flash cart have sent me a FAQ about the cart itself (although i wonder how they got my personal email addy), heres the details:
Here is a litte FAQ about Gateway 3DS, answering customers' most popular
questions.
- Is it one microSD per game?
Currently yes.
- Must the microSD card size match the game size?
No, so long as the microSD card is larger than the rom size.
- Can it play games from other regions?
Currently no, however due to popular demand, we have launched an investigation into this possibility.
- Can it play Homebrew?
No.
- Are saved games working? Once you take out the game is the save file kept or lost?
We are currently working to fully support back up and restore of save data.
- Can Nintendo block Gateway with an update?
Anything is possible we would rather not speculate (As always, any updates should be avoided)
- How big are the games and what is the minimum size for the microSD card?
Some range from 256MB to 4GB
- Can you play multiplayer local and mostly online?
Yes, but we advise not to use online features
- Do the game keep internet capacity?
Yes, but we advise not to use online features
- Is it upgradable?
Yes some aspects of the design will be upgradable.
- Can it run normal DS roms?
No, there are many alternative options for this.
- Suggested Retail price?
About $80/€65
- Availability: End of June. BUT until production has started, we are not accepting any pre-payment, therefore end-users should NOT pay until we indicate on our site that pre orders are officially open and payments from resellers are being accepted. PLEASE DO NOT PRE-PAY UNTIL WE SAY SO !
All sounds interesting

Shigeru Miyamoto has requested patience. Speaking with CNN in early April, he urged consumers to give Wii U a chance, to give Nintendo an opportunity to communicate the usefulness of the console’s second screen and to look forward to the games coming in late 2013. But with low sales in every territory for Nintendo’s latest console, Christmas may be too late.Wii U’s figures tell an unprecedented story. Nintendo has shifted 3.45 million Wii Us worldwide, with only 390,000 of those sold in 2013. While Nintendo stays tight-lipped on exact monthly sales figures, estimates from NPD Group data state that Wii U sold around 57,000 units in January and 64–75,000 in February in the US, a long way short of 360’s 302,000 and PS3’s 263,000 in February alone. In fact, in no four-week period on record has 360 or PS3 sold as few units as Wii U at its lowest ebb. While these numbers paint a dismal picture, the future looks darker still. Titles championed by Nintendo at the console’s E3 debut have been delayed or ported to other platforms, and publishers that shared Nintendo’s stage at Wii U’s E3 announcement have drifted away. Rayman Legends has gone multiplatform, Metro: Last Light and Aliens: Colonial Marines have been cancelled for the console, none of EA’s key 2013 titles – Dead Space 3, Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4 – are heading to Wii U, and both Madden and FIFA are running one year behind their PS3 and 360 counterparts. “Imagine a shooter like Battlefield… brought to you on a Nintendo system with that breakthrough controller,” said John Riccitiello at Nintendo’s 2011 E3 conference. Two years on, and imagination is the closest anyone will get to a Wii U version of EA’s FPS series.EA won’t be bringing Battlefield 4 to Wii U.
“Nintendo always went against the grain,” says EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich. “It’s risky for publishers to jump on revolutionary technology from day one and this puts tremendous pressure on the firstparty studios to lead the charge. With Wii U, a few key firstparty titles were delayed, and without them consumers are still on the fence about the console.”“Third parties won’t say this on the record, but many have confided in me that they are sceptical about Wii U,” says Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter. “The control scheme is very DS-like, the graphics are comparable to current-generation consoles, and the price point is relatively high. Although Nintendo did a commendable job with launch support, the lack of support from big publishers – Battlefield 4 and GTAV, for example – speaks volumes.”The clock is ticking on Wii U and the platform’s success now depends on the power of Nintendo’s firstparty titles to revive its fortunes. Mario Kart, Zelda, Super Smash Bros and Mario games have been announced, but with no release date. Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101 and an untitled Yoshi platformer have been shown off, but also have no date attached to them. “I suppose the right question is why they didn’t have more firstparty titles available at launch,” says Pachter. “And the answer is likely that they didn’t plan very well.”E3 will no doubt give shape to some firstparty games – Nintendo still intends to hold a press event, despite shunning the big stage – but the company’s attempt to court hardcore players failed long before the launch of Wii U. The barrage of ‘core’ games for Wii in 2010 was a clear shift in direction. As far back as 2008, Nintendo had set about securing the rights to Monster Hunter, guaranteeing Wii’s ongoing success in Japan, and the 2010/11 years saw it finance and publish Metroid: Other M, Pandora’s Tower, The Last Story and Xenoblade Chronicles at extraordinary expense. All three were costly and underperformed, particularly in the west.

PES 2014 was announced just minutes ago but the publisher’s European PES community manager Adam Bhatti has already taken to Twitter to confirm that the game will definitely be Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP only this year.
“[We’re] not in the business for high-res next-gen ports. We can't and shouldn't do that. Bad habit etc,” he stated. “So the fact we're not on PS4/Xbone with PES 2014 is simple. We can't and shouldn't be just using higher quality textures etc should be new.
“In the past people accused us of being lazy. We're adamant of not making the same mistakes, and making sure we create amazing football games. It's hardly amazing making the next-gen version prettier. We shouldn't have that mentality, and you shouldn't expect that. Aim higher.
“I'm a gamer like you, can't wait for next-gen, so I feel your pain. But once you see PES 2014 in action, that pain will disappear. It's stunning.”
When pressed on the subject, Bhatti listed a number of additional reasons why the publisher didn’t feel a next-gen release was appropriate this year.
“I think it's important to remember our biggest markets, where we are number 1 (Latam/Asia) [sic] won't shift to next-gen as quick as Europe,” he added. “We can't just leave our most passion fans behind. Besides, the quality of the current version is high enough.
“There will be possibly 2m next-gen consoles available to buy this year. Majority will be US based. European market will have less than US = small market to sell to in general for a long time.
“We're Konami, not Ubisoft, EA etc. We don’t have deep pockets. We have built one new engine, we don't have the money or resources to build two unique engines. AC4 for example will be just prettier. You want that? How many people do you think will buy a next-gen console this year alone? Think about availability too.”
Bhatti also said that no 3DS release was planned as “no-one bought” PES 2013 on 3DS and that a Vita version is not planned because: “The install base isn't great. We're doing a PSP version because there's still demand for it. A very small team work on it. Very small.”
When pressed on the decision to skip PS4 and Xbox One when their arrival is just around the corner and whether that could damage PES 2014’s potential sales, Bhatti added: “There's always a concern, but you're overestimating the speed of uptake.”

The second half of 2013 will be crucial to deciding the ultimate fate of Nintendo’s Wii U, one analyst has stated.
And while Nintendo itself is not hosting a press conference at next week’s E3, the LA convention is still of vital importance to the struggling console.
“We believe the Wii U release slate on display will be a key determinant of the console’s long-term staying power,” Michael Pachter told investors. “With the more powerful PS4 and Xbox One launching later this year, Nintendo risks losing additional share to its console competitors if the quality and volume of content available for Wii U does not pick up markedly in the near-term.
“If the Wii U’s popularity does not improve by the end of the year, many third-party publishers may pass on producing games for the console.”
Pachter went on to make an even graver prediction – that all third party publishers could eventually walk away from the machine.
“EA recently announced that it had no Wii U games in development, and it remains a possibility that the publisher will abandon the platform entirely,” he speculated. “Should other third parties follow EA’s lead, the Wii U could be relegated to a first party only platform.”
Of course, there’s always the tried and trusted price cut for Nintendo to fall back on if all else fails.
Added Pachter: “Nintendo may look to spur Wii U sales through either a hardware price drop of $50 or a bundle that includes some of its more popular software.”

8GB model of Nintendo's new console won't be available after the 18th of June
The basic model of the Wii U will be pulled from US retailers this month, claim sources.
“Retail sources” have told Kotaku that all 'basic' models of Nintendo's next gen console will be removed from GameStop shelves a week after the company's E3 showing.
“Nintendo Wii U Basic Recall - Two Week Preparation On Tuesday, 6/18, all stories will need to return all new/unopened Wii U Basic,” reads the message sent to retailers.
“Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the [distribution center]. .. All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall.”
GameStop has not responded to Kotaku's request for comment, and Nintendo has said it won't comment on its dealings with retailers.

Wii U is entering a perilous period at UK retail.
It was reported this morning that GameStop is removing its Wii U Basic 8GB stock from shelves in the US and returning it to Nintendo.
Neither Nintendo or GameStop has responded officially to the claims. Nintendo UK, however, has confirmed to MCV that there are currently no plans to withdraw the SKU from the UK market.
But there could still be some bad news on the horizon for the console in the UK.
MCV has been told from sources in UK retail that some retailers – including leading national GAME – are reassessing the shelf space they allocate to Nintendo’s machine.
Indeed, GAME is understood in some stores to be relegating the Wii U from its current wall bay display spaces to smaller, less prominent floor areas. And unless sales of the machine and its software pick up it could be reduced further still to make room for PS4 and Xbox One later this year.
Nintendo told MCV that it does not comment on rumour and speculation while GAME has not answered enquiries on the subject.

O2 is to offer free wi-fi access to 3DS and DS owners across the UK.
Owners of the handhelds will now see their machines automatically connect to internet hotspots that use O2’s service. These include McDonalds, Debenhams, Pizza Hut, Costa Coffee, House of Fraser, Toby Carvery, Bluewater and large parts of London boroughs Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea.
Connection will be automatic and not require authentication, although users will need to have their machines updated to the latest firmware.
The on-screen Nintendo Zone icon will blink when entering a compatible area.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve the user experience for Nintendo 3DS owners,” Nintendo’s UK marketing and PR director Shelly Pearce stated.
“This partnership with O2 means that gamers will now have access to all of the unique online features offered by Nintendo Zone in more locations than ever before.”
O2 wi-fi MD Gavin Franks added: “Nintendo is a leading brand in the gaming world and have shown real innovation in the industry, making them an ideal partner for O2 Wifi.
“With the popularity of online multiplayer gaming continuing to rise, customers are looking for a fast, free accessible Wi-Fi connection when they’re on the move – something that we know is becoming perceived as a right, rather than a privilege. This deal will enable Nintendo 3DS gamers to automatically connect their device to O2 Wifi whenever they are in over 7,000 hotspots across the UK’s top venues, restaurants and retailers.”

Puzzle/platformer Mighty Switch Force! 2 - WayForward's first direct sequel in the Mighty series - will arrive later this month on the 3DS eShop. North America gets it next week on 13th June, while Europe has to wait an extra fortnight until 27th June.Back in February WayForward teased the sequel saying that protagonist Patricia Wagon would have a "surprise career change" and indeed she's transitioned from a cop to a firefighter. This time instead of busting the outlaw Hooligan Sisters, you're tasked with saving the reformed criminals. They're not the only lives you'll save, as you'll also have to search for "ugly secret babies" hidden throughout each level; for this apparently takes place in a grim society where people stash away their unwanted kin to die in fires. Don't let the perky voices and bright smiles fool you.Mighty Switch Force! 2 will feature new puzzle types, weapons, enemies, and tunes.

Eiji Aonuma has confirmed that his A Link To The Past sequel will include a Dark World, runs at 60 frames per second and is set to reveal “a big surprise” in its opening moments that will shock Zelda fans.Speaking in our latest issue, the Zelda series chief also revealed that the forthcoming 3DS adventure will bring back characters from the original SNES title, and that it won’t force 3D effects or gyro controls onto the player.“This new title will feature lots of things that are new to the series; right at the start of the game, there’s a big surprise that will shock players,” he told us. “We started out with the new play mechanics, such as Link being able to become a painting and walk along the walls, and then figured out from there how to build a story around them. Rather than forcing elements of the original story into this one, we’ve instead focused on bringing back the characters, so you can see what happened to them after the events of the first game.”An alternative dark world, a key feature of the original game, will also be an important part of the sequel, Aonuma confirmed. “Part of what made A Link To The Past interesting was the way you could move between the Light World and the Dark World and solve puzzles, and we’re planning to bring that back in A Link To The Past 2 for sure,” he told us. “Link’s ability to become a painting will be related to that.”Gyro control won’t be part of the new game as moving the 3DS destabilises the 3D effect, said Aonuma. “But the game runs at 60fps, while all the 3D games up till now have run at 30fps,” he added. “The faster the framerate, the more stable the 3D effect, so 60fps is a big deal. He added that the game will be entirely playable in 2D, however.Elsewhere in our interview, Aonuma expressed the desire to make different games, having spent the last fifteen years developing Zelda titles. “I’m 50 now, so I only have about ten more years to make games at Nintendo. I want to try all sorts of new things before it’s too late – I don’t want to get to the end of my career and only have worked on Zelda. But every time I come up with some good new ideas, they end up being used in a Zelda game! I need a six-month break to get away from the Zelda cycle and focus on something new [laughs]. But I’d probably end up making a game that’s similar to Zelda; after all, A Link To The Past was my biggest influence.”You can read the full interview with Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma in E255. Ultimate Nintendo fanboy pleaser Smash Bros isn't to everyone's tastes.
It takes a special type of enthusiast to pour hours into pummeling Pikachu repeatedly in his far too chirpy face, and an even more avid fan to spend your days speculating which forgotten character will be added to an already packed roster.
Platinum Games designer Hideki Kamiya is not one of those fans. Far from it.
Fed up of tweets calling for Platinum characters like Bayonetta, Viewtiful Joe and Okami's Amaterasu to be added to the next Smash Bros, plus ones asking how excited he is for the Nintendo brawler, Kamiya made his thoughts known.
"Enough of smash idiots. **** off," he tweeted.
Then, for good measure, he linked to the admittedly ridiculous amount of Smash Bros-related messages he has received over the last three months.
Don't hold back, Hideki – let it out. It's good for the soul.
Hideki will be showing off the Wii U-exclusive Bayonetta 2 at E3 next week.

Another US analyst has poured scorn on Nintendo’s Wii U and said that the opportunity for success will soon pass.
"After seven months on the market, Nintendo's Wii U is struggling mightily," Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz told investors, as reported by GameSpot.
“We note that the company has essentially abandoned the field to Microsoft and Sony at this year's E3 as Nintendo will not be holding a press conference."
"However, we do think there is a decent chance that Nintendo could announce a price cut for the Wii U at E3 in an effort to bring attention to the console and boost sales. We note that the console will have a series of key new games coming out through the late summer and fall, beginning with Pikmin 3 in August. Nintendo's window for igniting interest in its console is closing with Microsoft and Sony's competing machines soon to come to market."
There were words of warning for Sony and Microsoft, too.
Although Creutz reckons both will keep quiet about both hardware pricing and pre-owned plans, he thinks the second topic will have a direct effect on both console’s long-term prospects.
“We suspect they will avoid the issue as much as possible at E3, despite calls from the gaming community for clarity," he added. "Microsoft needs to make its case for the Xbox One to the core gaming community after its initial launch clearly focused on the broader audience for media and entertainment.
"While we think pursuing the mass market strategy is correct (Microsoft reputedly hopes to sell 400 million Xbox Ones during its lifetime, more than 2.5x the sales total of the PS2 and 4x that of the Wii), the console still needs to appeal to its core gamer constituency to get off to a good start and generate positive buzz. We suspect Microsoft will not disappoint in this respect.
"In contrast, Sony has focused its early message squarely on the gaming community. Sony's challenge at E3 is simply to reestablish relevance given the decisive lead Microsoft has built on current-gen (at least outside of Japan). We also expect Sony to showcase some of the non-gaming aspects of the console; however, the PS4 needs to not come off as 'me-too' relative to the Xbox One."

Despite mixed support from third parties, Ubisoft still believes Wii U can find a place in the market.
Nintendo is not holding an E3 press conference but will unveil a raft of new games on the showfloor. It will only take one to 'rescue' the console, according to EMEA exec director Alain Corre.
"It takes time for a machine to establish itself," he told MCV in a new pre-E3 interview.
"We've seen in the past that when more games come, the console picks up. That is what we believe will happen for Wii U. There is a place in the market for each console, and with the right games Wii U will find its public and sell in the long-term."
Ubisoft has kept Wii U as part of its multiplatform strategy with Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Assassin's Creed IV and Watch Dogs all confirmed for the console.
Corre said: "One single game can change a platform's fortunes - it happened for the DS, it happened for the Super Nintendo. I believe it can be the same for Wii U."
You can read MCV's full interview with Alain Corre in this week's E3 special of MCV.

The company which [Eric Wright] works for recently bought a Nintendo VS. It had Ice Climber installed as one of the titles but they asked the vendor if it was possible to swap it out for the Duck Hunt ROM. They had the ROM but not a light gun that would work with the system. [Eric] suggested they buy it with Duck Hunt and hack an NES Zapper to work with the VS cabinet.
Let’s take a step back for a moment. The Nintendo VS was a coin-operated gaming cabinet you would find in an Arcade. Luckily there’s quite a bit of information about the original hardware on the web. Some research helped him discover that electronically the only difference between the arcade and home versions of the Zapper is that the sensor capture is inverted. This was fixed by replacing a transistor in the gun with a jumper wire. The next challenge was figuring out how to wire the gun up to the second controller port. And finally he patched the ROM to work with the incorrect PPU as the right chip was not easily sourced.

Nintendo's Wii U launched at retail just over six months ago to a lukewarm reception from critics. An even more tepid response from consumers followed, with week-one sales trailing behind those of its predecessor. A massive day-one patch, missing functionality (Nintendo TVii, anyone?) and an ever-expanding launch window for games, some of which still aren't available (Pikmin 3, anyone?) are just a few of the many issues that overwhelmed the discussion last November. Company head Satoru Iwata even publicly apologized.
In the past six months, things have only gotten worse, with slumping sales, next-gen competition and a lack of Wii U-centric games on the horizon.
As E3 2013 nears -- where Nintendo usually has a big press conference and won't this year -- we're revisiting the Wii U for an update, six months out. We're not delving back into how the hardware works (surprise, it's identical to last year!) so much as looking at the console's early promise in contrast with its current predicament. Join us after the break.

Nintendo will show a video of its new Super Smash Bros. game next Tuesday, June 11 as part of its Nintendo Direct broadcast.
Creator Masahiro Sakurai took to Twitter to confirm the news today. He said (via Google translation): "In Nintendo Direct delivery of 23:00, June 11, New video of "Smash Bros." will be unveiled for the first time. Simultaneous world, here for the first time! Do not miss." You can watch it from 3pm UK time.Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently said Nintendo would use its E3 webcast to discuss "new Smash Bros., 3D Mario game, Mario Kart and other Wii U titles".
Sakurai is serving as producer on the new Smash Bros. game, which is a Wii U/3DS crossover in development at Namco Bandai
Official Nintendo Magazine associate editor Matthew Castle recently labelled the title his most anticipated game of E3, writing:
"Sakurai says he wants the 3DS version to be a more personalised, individual experience that feeds into a competitive public space on Wii U, and that would certainly play to the strengths of both systems.
"He's also tidying up online play - great news for those us that spent months of our lives hanging out in Brawl's notoriously flaky pre-match lobby.
"I'm more concerned about how much of the game we'll actually see. Every promise Iwata makes about showing the game at E3 is met with a cautious 'wait and see' from Sakurai."

June 7th, 2013, 11:34 Posted By: wraggster
Over the past few years the PC indie scene has erected a new payment structure wherein people can often buy a work in progress for a cheap price, then slowly gain access to all of its added features at no additional cost. Conversely, they can wait until it's complete and pay the full price later on.This sort of thing is common when you play Spin the Bottle. Note Korsgaard in the back, sporting the Spin the Bottle t-shirt.
Now, Nordic developer KnapNok is adopting a similar structure to its upcoming Wii U party game Spin the Bottle. Creative director Lau Korsgaard told NintendoLife that he's planning to release Spin the Bottle around early July at a cheap price, then increase it as two more updates are introduced throughout 2013. The idea is that the early adopters will receive the updates at no extra cost, ensuring that they're rewarded for their efforts rather than punished."We see a bunch of games right now permanently lowering their price on the eShop, they probably have their reasons to do it, but I think it is the wrong way around," Korsgaard said in statement to Eurogamer. "Why penalise people who bought the console early while driving prices down in general, making it less possible to make money in the future?""Our strategy is inspired by how indie PC games has been sold for years now. We will launch at a price around €7 / $9 but keep adding content and raise the price for each new update. People buying in early get all future updates for free. The important thing is that we will be open and earnest about it, we will 'warn' about an upcoming update and encourage people to buy while the price is low."Korsgaard added that he still wants to explore this space of party games where players have to look at each other rather than the TV, but he doesn't want to make this conventional DLC. "I don't really find DLC's that cool," he said. "The idea of milking money out of your most loyal fans while later giving everything away almost for free is not appealing to me. We see it the other way around; our most loyal fans helps us build up value in the game, for that we are going to reward them with free updates. New customers don't get cheated, [as] what they buy will be 'worth more' than what our early adopters bought. I really can't see anyone getting pissed here."Thankfully, Nintendo was supportive of KnapNok's peculiar business strategy. "Originally when we presented the idea to Nintendo they were a bit puzzled," Korsgaard explained. "They do have some guidelines about how much you can reduce your price post launch, but nothing about raising the price, so I took that as a yes. Since then we have talked about it a few times and they are supportive of the strategy. Nintendo has been really flexible to work with in this sense. We have control of everything, and all they provide is good advice.".It's certainly an interesting theory and nigh unheard of in the console space. What do you make of this unique pricing structure, dear readers?

Uniqlo’s range of Monster Hunter t-shirts.
While the rest of the gaming world looks ahead to E3 and frets over the latest Draconian missives from Microsoft, in Japan Capcom’s Monster Hunter 4 campaign went into overdrive this week – over three months ahead of the 3DS game’s release. And it’s no wonder, as the Japan success of the latest entry in Capcom’s killer franchise may not be assured as you’d think.Monster Hunter 4′s September 14 release date was announced during a Japan-only edition of Nintendo Direct last Friday that focused solely on Capcom’s two upcoming tentpole 3DS releases, MH4 and Ace Attorney 5. Series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto also revealed a 5,990 yen (£40) price tag, a pair of Monster Hunter-themed 3DS XL handsets and, well, not a lot else, instead teasing that more information would come out of an event Capcom was to hold at Odaiba Aqua City in Tokyo over last weekend.

Upcoming Wii U party game Spin the Bottle will use a gradually-increasing price model, creative director Lau Korsgaard told Nintendo Life. Korsgaard said the game will launch at a "cheap-ish," but still undetermined price and will increase as the developer creates more content for it.
"If you buy early you will get all future updates for free. Our plan is to release two more updates in 2013 – each time raising the price a bit," he said. "We want reward the early adopters of the Wii U while still being able to earn money on the long run."
Spin the Bottle was originally expected to launch in May, but its official site now lists it as an early summer eShop release.

Best Buy is the next big retailer sending back its Wii U Basic units to Nintendo.Nintendo World Report has an image pulled from Best Buy's internal system stating "stores should pull all new in box [Wii U Basic] units and send them back" starting tomorrow. It also notes that stores should see more Wii U Deluxe units arrive in the coming weeks.
GameStop is also currently going through a similar send-back of the Wii U Basic.
Nintendo previously stated any notion of a recall of the Wii U Basic is a "misperception" and that the company is "working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market." The House of Mario claims consumers will be able to continue purchasing both models. The Wii U has struggled since launch, with the regular Wii outperforming its progeny.

Nintendo's forthcoming 3DS sequel to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Pastmay be one of the smoothest-running game to ever grace the handheld – at least as far as its performance in 3D mode is concerned – due to its ability to run at 60 frames-per-second with 3D switched on, Zelda series veteran Eiji Aonuma told EDGE.
"The game runs at 60fps, while all the 3D games up till now have run at 30fps," Aonuma said. "The faster the framerate, the more stable the 3D effect, so 60fps is a big deal." Aonuma also mentioned that the game will not take advantage of the 3DS' gyroscopic capabilities, as requiring the player to tilt the 3DS could break the screen's required viewing angle.

Longtime Sonic the Hedgehog series collaborator Dimps is developing the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic: Lost World, Sonic Team's Takashi Iizuka revealed in an interview with IGN this week.
Iizuka notes that Sonic: Lost World features unique content on the Nintendo 3DS. Though it shares similar settings with its Wii U counterpart, level layouts are entirely different in order "to match the screen size and hardware so players can enjoy both versions with a fresh feeling," Iizuka said.
The 3DS version also boasts an exclusive versus mode for up to four players, along with features that can be unlocked by linking with the Wii U edition.
Dimps previously tackled the Sonic Rush series on the Nintendo DS, andworked with Sonic Team to produce both episodes of Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The company was also responsible for the portable versions of Sonic Colorsand Sonic Generations.

The first 3DS outing for the Pokémon series will arrive on October 12th.
Handheld duo Pokémon X and Y opened Nintendo's E3 edition of Nintendo Direct, with new footages showing off the games' additional features.
Chief among these is the addition of the new Fairy type, which is strong against Dragon Pokémon.
The games will also feature a mini-game called Pokémon-amie, a Nintendogs-style pet simulator that lets players take care of their pocket monsters. 3DS owners will need to tend to their creatures, and mimic their movements to keep them happy.

Fans have been given their first look at the next Smash Bros for both Wii U and 3DS.
Simply titled Super Smash Bros, the game will be released in 2014 at retail and in the Nintendo eShop.
As usual, Smash Bros pits Nintendo characters such as Mario, Link, Samus and Pikachu against each other. The inaugural trailer also revealed new fighters, including Animal Crossing's Villager and Capcom's Mega Man.
A Miiverse community and official website will be live shortly for players to discuss the game ahead of release.
A new Smash Bros was confirmed at E3 last year.

Wii U fans will have to wait until next year to get their hands on Platinum Games’ Bayonetta 2.
The news was broken by Nintendo boss Saturo Iwata in this afternoon’s E3 Nintendo Direct broadcast.
A video shown this afternoon looked more than a little reminiscent of the first Bayonetta game, albeit with new costumes and what appeared to be new attacks.
Iwata also talked a lot about Bayonetta’s new short hair, which the Nintendo president seemed to find quite fascinating.
We were also treated to some gameplay footage, which looked suitably bonkers.

Following the success of Donkey Kong Country Returns, Nintendo is rolling out a new version for Wii U.
The game will be the first HD entry in the series and retains the classic 2D platforming style of the previous title – although the camera angle will now move around the action at certain points.
Co-op gameplay also returns, with Donkey and Diddy Kong now joined by Dixie Kong, who has her own unique abilities.
Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze will be released later this year at both retail and in the Nintendo eShop.

The next entry in Mario Kart will be available for Wii U early next year.
Nintendo introduced Mario Kart 8 as part of today's E3 Nintendo Direct. It will be released in Spring 2014.
Following on from Mario Kart 7, the racer will allow players to go underwater and fly through the sky at certain parts in each course.
It will also feature sections where you can defy gravity and drive up vertical walls or along the ceiling.
The usual mash of racing and weapons is still present, and this will be the first time the series has been seen in HD.

Are the Super Nintendo gamepad's smoothly curved edges just too darn comfortable for your palms? You might want to check out Hyperkin's Pixel Art controller, an SNES-inspired USB controller rendered in the style of its time. Hyperkin quietly unveiled it on the E3 show floor, scattering boxed prototypes throughout its booth. Despite our jest, it's actually quite comfortable to hold and use, and feels very much like a brand new SNES pad.
Unfortunately for retro gaming die-hards, this gamepad won't actually work on your classic game console -- the SNES compatible version of the product was nixed when the team decided to make it a Bluetooth gamepad instead. A bummer for some, but the design is still a hoot. Hyperkin didn't have a price for us, but the pixel-obsessed should be able to pick up the USB model of the gamepad (in eight colors!) later this summer, followed by a wireless version in the fall.

This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo might be all about the next generation of gaming hardware, but not in Hyperkin's E3 booth: these guys are looking backwards. We dropped by to check out the Retron 5, the outfit's latest machine to traverse the library of older gaming titles. All told, this iteration strolls through half a dozen hardware cycles, offering compatibility for a full nine video game systems. It's more than a simple hardware emulator, however -- this machine offers save states, cheats and visual filters too.

If you had big plans for Nintendo's forthcoming Wii Fit U, which was scheduled to come in the first half of 2013, you'd better put them on hold. The company's president, Satoru Iwata just said during its E3 presentation that the game will be delayed until December of this year in order to "create new features" and bring "as high quality a gaming experience as possible." That includes the game's Fit Meter pedometer, which will eventually track your movements in over 77 game-based activities. Fortunately, if plain old exercise just won't do, there's lots of other options.

Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl will bring dungeon-crawling anime cartography to the 3DS sometime this fall, Atlus announced this morning. When it launches, this semi-remake of the original Etrian Odyssey will be available in both physical and digital flavors, the later provided through the 3DS eShop.
The game's Story mode, which features voice acting and animated cutscenes created by the folks who handled those duties for Persona 4 Golden andPersona 4 Arena, is a first for the franchise. Likewise, the new "Grimoire Stone" system forgoes class skill limitations found in previous entries by allowing players to assign skills and create hybridized characters themselves.
Meanwhile, Classic mode is an updated, 3D version of the original Etrian Odyssey, enhanced with the Grimoire Stone system and made flexible by three new difficulty modes: Picnic, Standard and Expert.

Xbox One and PS4 aren't a big scare, claims Wii U maker
Most of the E3 buzz has been devoted to Sony and Microsoft heavyweight consoles, but Nintendo hasn't given up hope of being a serious contender this holiday season.
The Wii U has been something of a slow starter, and has sold only 3.5 million units to date.
But Nintendo communications director Charlie Scibetta tells Gamespot that the new lineup of exclusive titles and the Wii U's lower price point will draw consumers to the established brand of beloved games.
"If you're a consumer going in and you have these options; we know what the price points are now from the competitors, we know what the games are from the competitors; and we know now what the Wii U is going to offer," said Scibetta.
"We feel good about where we stack up. It's the software that's going to motivate them."

By name alone, one can surmise that Super Mario 3D World is a sequel to the 3DS’s 3D Land. It’s so similar, in fact, that it arouses suspicions that it was once a 3DS sequel, quickly diverted for release on Wii U with the understanding that Nintendo’s flagging console needed a Mario game, and quickly. We saw plenty of examples of asset and idea recycling from its 3DS predecessor, including the exclamation mark boxes that teleport the player between stage sections, during our time with the game. It’s still a delight, though, and not just aesthetically. Mario’s weight and movement is just like Super Mario 3D Land, and the controls are the same, too – buttstomp, long jump and double jump. The addition of fourplayer co-op will pose some difficult questions of Nintendo’s design team – like Super Mario Bros 2, Mario is the default character, but controlling Luigi, Toad and Peach is subtly different. Toad is quick, but can’t jump as high; Luigi retains his higher, slower jump and feels more slippery in general; Peach retains her ability to float for a short time. One stage we played through saw us riding on the back of a giant Yoshi through water, slaloming back and forth through rings and steering clear of obstacles. There’s a delightful inertia to steering, reminiscent of Wave Race.Later, we used the new catsuit powerup – enabled once your character picks up a bell – during a boss battle. It allows Mario to scramble up walls, steep cliffs and, in this case, enemies. Wait for the right moment, when one of the snake-like foes stiffens and turns into an ad-hoc platform, and Mario can pounce, dashing up the side of the bosses’ minions to stomp on the plump, purple king. Three hits and he’s beaten.

Despite not once naming the format in any of its press releases or marketing materials, Activision now says Call of Duty: Ghosts is getting a release on Wii U.
The revelation comes via Ghosts producer Mark Rubin in a video interview with GameSpot, as spotted by Kotaku.
"We're not actually talking about the Wii U yet because we want to keep it mysterious,” he claimed. “That's PR guys, that's not my fault."
It remains to be seen whether the Wii U SKU will be timed to launch with the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC release on November 5th or at a later date alongside the Xbox One and PS4 versions. Or later than all of them. Or perhaps before.
That’s PR guys.

June 12th, 2013, 23:29 Posted By: wraggster
The in-development Zelda title for Wii U was considered for inclusion in Nintendo’s E3 Direct presentation, it has been revealed.
The platform holder decided against it, however, as it didn’t want to draw attention away from its other titles.
“We are working on a new Wii U Zelda, as we do whenever we work on a new hardware system. Development on the new Wii U Zelda game, we've pretty much determined our direction on that and the teams are working hard on that,” Nintendo’s development boss Shigeru Miyamoto toldGames Industry.
“In fact, we actually did consider showing it at E3 this year but we were worried that if we showed the new Wii U Zelda game then that would attract all of the focus, and really what we want people to be aware of and pay attention to here at E3 are the playable games like Pikmin 3 that we have coming in the immediate future, because a lot of fun is with the games that are coming out this year.”
Miyamoto also addressed the question being asked of the company for its ongoing failure to support the struggling Wii U with first party software releases.
“Obviously if you speak in terms of simple math you could say that Nintendo should just multiply its development team staff by four times and then everything would be fine, but unfortunately things aren't quite that easy,” he insisted.
“Our focus is always on delivering the highest quality content, and simply increasing the development team size isn't going to allow you to achieve the level of quality that we strive for. You really have to kind of bring those people up gradually and help teach them how to develop games in order to achieve that consistent quality level. So that's one challenge that we're always engaging with and one we're progressing on.”

Concerns about Nintendo’s financial health are missing the point, design legend Shigeru Miyamoto has argued.
Although 3DS is gaining momentum it is still missing Nintendo’s expectations and Wii U is in danger of completely collapsing in the global market. But analysts who look solely at the numbers simply son’t understand Nintendo, Miyamoto believes.
“The entertainment industry is one that is inherently unstable and if people decide that they no longer need entertainment anymore then there's no way for you to make money off of that,” he told Games Industry.
“Because of the waves in the entertainment industry and the way the cycles move, personally I feel that aiming for a specific numerical goal is almost silly, and instead our focus should be on doing our best to create something that's new and unique.
“So all of this talk of ‘Oh is Nintendo going to hit its numbers? Is Mr. Iwata responsible?’ and all these discussions I think are just silly ones to have because Mr. Iwata is managing our company and I don't think there's anyone better to manage it than him.
“I'm really focused on creating the most fun and unique experiences I can so that the entertainment can appeal to a very broad audience, and we're having fun doing that. So certainly I think there are other industries where I think their chance to appeal to a broad audience has been lost, but I still think within our industry we have a lot of opportunity to do that.”

The next-generation of consoles has finally and fully arrived here at E3, and the companies building the Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U are doing their best to differentiate their consoles from the competition. However, there is a common thread that connects them under the hood: AMD silicon. Naturally, we wanted to know more about the process of building chips for these next gene consoles. So, we spoke with AMD VP Saeid Moshkelani -- who heads up the Semi-Custom Business Unit that built those SoCs -- to get the inside scoop.
Moshkelani wouldn't get into the details of the differences between the chips he built for the consoles. Instead, he talked about how AMD developed custom silicon for each and the necessity of secrecy in the process. In fact, Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft had no idea that they were each going to the AMD well to get silicon for their next-gen platforms until they were announced. So, head on down past the break to hear Moshkelani discuss what it's like working with the big three and AMD's role in making next-gen gaming a reality.

New title won't be related to Mario or Pokemon, as both already have a 'good relationship'
Nintendo is working on a free-to-play game due to release during the current fiscal year, president and CEO Satoru Iwata told investors today.
The company has expressed interest in such a venture in the past, but has not yet released a game outside of the traditional premium model.
The news broke when Polygon spotted a tweet from analyst David Gibson, who says the game won't be in either the Mario or Pokemon franchises.
"Nintendo free-to-play game will be released this fy but will not be Mario or Pokemon game as already have good relationship in those brands," wrote Gibson.
Nintendo has since confirmed the comments, and said it will provide a full transcript of Iwata's remarks next week.

Nintendo designer explains why ownership is important
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
As talk of DRM swirls around the E3 booths, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has explained why he wants Nintendo to continue making products in the style of a more traditional toy company.
"As a consumer you want to be able to keep those things for a long time and have those things from your youth that you can go back to and experience again," he told Eurogamer.
"I really want to retain that product nature of the games that we create so that people can do that and have that experience. To me that's something that's very important about entertainment itself. So from the approach of continuing to create things that are entertaining for people, that's an important direction for me that I want to maintain."
Designer, producer and entertainment analysis and development manager Miyamoto ha a long history with Nintendo, contributing to some of the biggest franchises such as Pikmin, Mario and Zelda.

Ubisoft chief indicates further platform exclusives are tied to sales
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
[h=3]Ubisoft[/h]ubisoft.com
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has indicated that Nintendo can't expect too much more support from the French publisher, at least in terms of platform exclusives for the Wii U, until more hardware units are sold.
Speaking to Kotaku, Guillemot alluded to the poor performance of the console fairly bluntly, saying that, from Ubisoft's perspective, "We need more sold."
Nintendo must take the initiative for this sales boost, the Frenchman indicated, pointing out that conditions for that initiative were falling into place.
"They are coming with five of their biggest brands ever," he said. "The Yen went down. So maybe they will take steps that will increase the number of consoles sold."
Alongside this warning, Guillemot also suggested that the company's time working on Wii U wouldn't be wasted either way, as the Gamepad's second screen had given the publisher valuable experience with concepts such as Smart Glass.
"Our job is to be agile," Guillemot told Kotaku. "We have to adapt the company to the potential of the market. So, what we did last year, was we knew we could learn second-screen with Nintendo, so we went full-speed to use this capacity the console was bringing. And we were able to develop Rayman, which will come at the end of this year and which is fantastic, using this second screen. What we saw is that, in learning that, we can also use it with the other consoles with [Xbox] Smart Glass, for example, and it's a good option that is coming to us. If you look at us this year on Wii U we will have a lot of products."

It's cool to be different. That's the message we typically feed our children when they come up against peer opposition. It's also an attitude Nintendo's adopted time and time again when its penchant for innovation, aversion to hardcore gameplay and reliance on classic franchises have put the company in a perceived last place position. But, as it's continually proven -- and most successfully with the Wii -- you can't ever definitively count the Mario hitmaker out. There always seems to be an ace in the company's IP sleeve that keeps bringing gamers and its diehard fanbase back to the fold. But we have to wonder: how long will that last? It's a question we posed directly to Eiji Aonuma, Nintendo's Most Valuable Player #2 and Zelda mastermind, this week at E3. And his answer might surprise you: "If we don't change we might die. We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow." It's a sobering admission, especially considering the source."If we don't change we might die. We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow."
The IP ace this time around falls upon the Zelda franchises' shoulders, except not in the way we've come to expect. The two newest titles in the series, headed to the 3DS and Wii U, also happen to be recycled efforts: a reimagining of A Link to the Past and an HD reboot of the Wind Waker, both headed up by Aonuma. Perhaps it's just a consequence of franchise fatigue and player familiarity, but there's something more alarming, more distressing about this back catalog mining; something Aonuma's all too aware of. It's also something he's actively steering his production teams away from, while at the same time attempting to take it all in as a greater lesson for a company so tethered to video gaming past. So to catch some deeper perspective on Nintendo's next-gen leanings, its level of self-awareness and the future of Zelda, we sat down with Aonuma for what turned out to be an honest and refreshing chat.

There's no question that Nintendo is hurting these days, mostly owing to the lackluster reception for the Wii U. The company's Scott Moffitt is upbeat, however: he tells CNETthat the Wii U should enjoy a 3DS-like sales renaissance this holiday now that games inbigger franchises, like Mario and Zelda, are on the way. Of course, the 3DS also had the advantage of a dramatic price drop -- but never you mind that. As for the handheld's own performance this year? Moffitt claims that the 3DS is the only dedicated console whose sales are still growing, and he expects the system to have its best holiday yet. His positions on the 3DS and Wii U strike us as optimistic when Nintendo is up against twomajor console launches and the ever-present threat of smartphone gaming, but the gaming giant has defied the odds more than once in its history.

Developers can limit used game sales by simply making their games better, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has suggested.Fils-Aime pointed to the relatively low trade-in and resale market for Nintendo products as proof.Nintendo makes games that you'll want to Koopa hold of.
"We have been able to step back and say that we are not taking any technological means to impact trade-in and we are confident that if we build great content, then the consumer will not want to trade in our games," Fils-Aime told Polygon."Certainly, that impact games that are annualised and candidly also impacts games that are maybe undifferentiated much more than [it] impacts Nintendo content."Fils-Aime suggested that the replayability of Nintendo titles remained strong, a position supported by the the fact that even second-hand Nintendo titles keep a high price years after their initial release."The consumer wants to keep playing Mario Kart. The consumer want to keep playing New Super Mario Bros. They want to keep playing Pikmin," Fils-Aime continued. "So we see that the trade-in frequency on Nintendo content is much less than the industry average - much, much less. It's a much more natural way to discourage second-hand sales, he concluded, and reiterated that Nintendo has no plans to restrict the used game market."We have been very clear, we understand that used games are a way for some consumers to monetize their games," Fils-Aime added, re-iterating the position of Nintendo's top designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who told Eurogamer yesterday that the company did not want to introduce restrictions on game ownership.

The mystery of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker's missing dungeons can now be solved - almost. It's been known for years that more than one dungeon was cut from the GameCube game, giving its latter half some rather awkward pacing. With the HD Wii U version due for release in October this year, it's natural to wonder: will they be reinstated?I asked Eiji Aonuma - the producer who oversees the Zelda series at Nintendo - this question when I met him yesterday in a quiet suite on Nintendo's E3 stand."Quite honestly, those dungeons we removed we used in other games, so we can't use them in this version!" he told me, with an apologetic laugh.Could he tell me which ones? "I can't!" he said, laughing more. We'll likely never know, although it would be fun to speculate.Even if the work hadn't already been recycled, though, Aonuma would have been reluctant to add it to the new version. It would have been too dramatic a change to a game which had a mixed reception at the time, but is now widely regarded as a classic. What his team is doing is tuning the pacing - presumably the distances you need to cover between islands - of the game so it's more satisfying."I've received many questions about additional content beyond what was in the GameCube version of the game, but our desire is to stay true of the story that was in the original," he said. "If we add dungeons then that will affect other parts of the GameCube version, which we really want to stay true to."If it felt like there were maybe too few dungeons then I feel that what was wrong with the GameCube version was the pacing. It was thrown off because it took longer to get to certain dungeons. There was a waiting period, and then when you arrived there the experience maybe didn't feel as big, as you'd waited so long to get there. We're tuning the game to alleviate all that. The pacing should feel appropriate to the overall experience this time... We need to tighten those [gaps] and make the overall experience and story feel tighter."Eiji Aonuma has been synonymous with The Legend of Zelda since the Nintendo 64 days. He was a lead designer on Ocarina of Time, directed Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, and has produced every game in the series since then.We had a long, relaxed and illuminating chat covering Wind Waker HD, the new 3DS game A Link Between Worlds, the daring next Wii U instalment, and why Nintendo has been struggling to launch original games in recent years. You can read our interview on Eurogamer tomorrow morning, with additional material being published soon by our friends and partners at Nintendo Life.

Nintendo's retreat from the very public PR war of the E3 press conferences turned out to be a more literal one than we might have thought. This morning in Los Angeles, the company replaced its traditional stage show first with its Nintendo Direct live stream and then by inviting press to its stand before the show floor opened to play six key Wii U titles and meet their creators. With giant curtains drawn across the entrances and a crowd heavily populated with Nintendo fans - 3DS consoles flipped open, trading StreetPass hits - there was a reclusive and clubby atmosphere. Charles Martinet was on hand to voice a CG Mario on the screens, name-checking the journalists as they crowded around a small stage. Welcoming us, Nintendo's US boss Reggie Fils-Aime waxed almost poetic as he referred to the desensitising effect of the E3 show floor, where "adjectives, sound effects and quick cuts bleed into each other". Here, safe in Nintendo's bosom, we could play the games and concentrate on what's important. "What matters is how you feel when you play the game," he said.Nintendo was hunkering down in its bunker, battening down the hatches, preaching to the converted. And it was a sermon we'd heard a few too many times before.Even by Nintendo's standards, the slate of highlighted games was deeply conservative. The most adventurous was, unsurprisingly, from an external team: Platinum Games' otaku favourite, Bayonetta 2. Its extravagant action and decadent, risqué aesthetic set it apart in the context of Nintendo's stand. Two more were already familiar: Pikmin 3, out soon, and the HD remaster of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, more faithful to the original's visuals than at its first appearance in January's Nintendo Direct and sporting a few minor feature and control tweaks. It will no doubt be a lavishly nostalgic pleasure to revisit later this year. Meanwhile, and despite being too much of a known quantity to possess the requisite E3 wow factor, Shigeru Miyamoto's pet project Pikmin 3 fizzed with a sense of busy novelty - perhaps more so than the three all-new games on show. And that's a worry.Another new Mario Kart, with another new gimmick: anti-gravity tracks that loop upside down through the sky. Another Retro Studios Donkey Kong Country game, Tropical Freeze, in which Nintendo's pet Western development team of the moment apes (sorry) the work of Nintendo's pet Western development team of two decades ago. Yet another polished and safe platformer to add to Nintendo's bulging catalogue of such games (although the return of the original music composer David Wise is sure to please many fans).

Nintendo's Wii U is struggling in sales and support. During an interview this week at E3 with Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's head of corporate communications, we noted that the Wii U's lack of Madden this year puts it in the company of Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast. EA currently has no games in development for Wii U.
"You'd have to ask EA about their future development plans. EA is a great partner of ours, they've had games on our platforms before. They want what all third parties want and what we want: for the install base to grow," saidScibetta. "We're confident that once some of these games come out that we have planned between now and the holiday and into 2014, that it will help drive the install base and when that happens the platforms will look more enticing to third parties."
So, we asked Electronic Arts Labels President Frank Gibeau about what Nintendo can do to bring EA back to the Wii U.

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai may have been forthcoming about the new Super Smash Bros' lack of cross-platform play, but when it came to thereally important information, he was still pretty cagey. For example, what could be more important than finding out what happens when Kirby eats Smash newcomer Mega Man?
These are two gaming icons whose main ability is to steal the abilities of others. For all we know, Kirby swallowing Mega Man could create a rift in the fabric of reality, destroying all life as we know it. Alas, Sakurai wouldn't give us much information. "A lot of what you're asking is still classified," he told us through an interpreter at E3.
"As far as the physical appearance of Kirby," he said, "I think what you imagine is probably pretty close to what will actually happen." Sakurai put his hands next to his head, in what we're pretty sure was the international sign for "Mega Man's helmet." We followed up by asking if Kirby would be gifted with a Mega Buster. "He's got little tiny arms, so who knows."

The Wii U and 3DS versions of the new Super Smash Bros. will not feature cross-platform play, director of Sora Ltd. Masahiro Sakurai tells Joystiq. Since each version of the game has completely different stages, cross-platform play wouldn't work, he told us through an interpreter. Each version will interact with one another, however, as announced back in 2011. Specifically, players will be able to take characters they've customized and transfer them to the Wii U version.
He wouldn't elaborate on exactly what those customizations are, saying only that they won't be costumes and they won't be something that players have to unlock through repetitive tasks. Different costumes, he said, would take away from what makes each character unique. He also wanted to avoid boring, repetitive tasks, while Sora works to produce a "stress free, easy connectivity" between the two versions.
When asked if the level editor would return, Sakurai gave us a "no comment."

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has revealed that the latest Animal Crossing title has broken digital sales records for the company, and has sold more than 4 million copies in Japan.
"Animal Crossing: New Leaf was launched in the U.S. on Sunday, June 9 and is having an immediate impact," said Iwata during a Nintendo E3 Analyst Briefing.
" A wide variety of consumers, including women, enjoy this title"
"The digital version of the game set a new record for launch day sales in the Nintendo eShop and sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware were nearly four times greater than the previous week."
The game is due for release today in Europe. The game currently has a Metacritic score of 88.
"In Japan, it has become a hit with sales of more than four million units. A wide variety of consumers, including women, enjoy this title and it has given great momentum to the sales of Nintendo 3DS," said Iwata.
"Also, since consumers tend to play this game continually, they actively use Nintendo 3DS over an extended period. This game has greatly contributed to the platform in many ways. The success of this title is crucial for the future of Nintendo 3DS in the US and European markets."

Physical media might lend itself well to the used games market (well, usually), but it does have a distinct disadvantage over digital purchases: you still have to get up and change that disc. It's a minor annoyance, but apparently enough of one to spark the creation of the Exeo Entertainment Extreme Gamer XG 10, an Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3 compatible game jukebox with room for ten retail titles. Unlike other Xbox 360 disc changers, however, this one won't void your warranty.
According to Exeo Entertainment, the Extreme Gamer pipes disc data to the console through USB or ethernet ports. The operation sounds a little fishy, but Exeo Entertainment assured us the device is on the up and up -- console makers allow it to function because the data is processed on the console itself. It's a neat trick, but it does seem a little late, considering the stars of this year's E3. The company told us it's aware of this, and is already planning to build a next-gen successor. Timetable? Just as soon as they can get their hands on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Electronic Arts will resume full support for Wii U when it "becomes a viable platform" on which to sell games, says EA Labels president Frank Gibeau.
In a rare and shocking move, EA confirmed last month that there will be no FIFA 14 on Wii Ufollowing "disappointing" sales of FIFA 13 on the console. Likewise, other EA sports titles, including Madden NFL 25 will also skip the Nintendo machine.
And while the firm's CFO Blake Jorgensen pledged that the firm does have games in development for Wii U -despite prior reports - he admitted that it's "not anywhere near as many as we are for PS or Xbox".
Gibeau told Joystiq this week that Nintendo must "sell more boxes" for EA to resume full support for the platform.
"Look, the only thing they can do to fix it is to sell more boxes. We're a rational company, we go where the audience is. We publish games where we think we can make a great game and hit a big audience, and make money. That's why we're here, that's why we have an industry," said Gibeau.
"The Wii U, we shipped four games. We shipped Madden, FIFA, Need for Speed and Mass Effect. In fact, the last Need for Speed shipped 60 days ago had a pretty good Metacritic. It was a good game. It wasn't a schlocky port, we actually put extra effort into getting everything to work. And it's just not selling because there's no boxes," he added.

Everyone was talking about the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U during E3this year, but the highlight of the Innex booth wanted nothing to do with these newfangled gadgets. I'm talking about Retro-Bit's Wireless Hypermode controllers for the N64.
I got a chance to try out one of these controllers with the original Super Smash Bros – serendipitously right before my interview with its creator, Masahiro Sakurai – and it seemed to work swimmingly. I didn't notice any significant input latency, and was able to perform smash attacks without any trouble (as Samus, obviously).
I doubt I spent more than five minutes with it, so I can't speak to longterm concerns like connectivity issues or battery life, but the initial impression was definitely a positive one. The build quality felt good, though not as high as official Nintendo controllers. The analog stick in particular felt like it didn't have as much weight or resistance to it as an official pad – more or less how you would expect a third-party controller to feel.
Connection is achieved via a receiver plugged into the console's controller ports. The receiver has a connection button and a slot for a memory card or Rumble Pak. Obviously you won't be feeling any of those rumbles from across your living room, but at least the option is there for any games that require the Rumble function (like finding secrets in Ocarina of Time, etc).
The Wireless Hypermode N64 controller is slated to arrive this summer for $30. A Genesis version and an NES / SNES hybrid version are panned for this fall at the same price.

While it appears to have already been implemented a couple months ago, it has come to my attention that the patch in effect is still 1.0. It has now been corrected, you can immediately tell if it’s v1.1 from the title screen. It should not affect your progress in 1.0, the changes are minor. You can see the readme to know them.

After almost three years of hibernation, this awesome homebrew back on the front of the stage with an update that will delight owners of new wiimote + or / and WiiU. Developers (Aaron tueidj, Tempus and megazig) were reworked to make it compatible with the WiiU vWii fashion and new wiimote +. For those who missed the train at the time of its release, is a riivolution small application that allows you to replace the stolen data of the original games (and only original!), making it the ideal tool for budding modders. Many projects (especially for New Mario Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Brawl) are available for download, offering completely new games. New / Fixes: - added compatibility with vWii mode (Virtual Wii) of the WiiU - added support new wiimote + Riivolution 1.05 Official website: http://rvlution.net/wiki/Riivolution

Nintendo’s VirtualBoy – the odd console-inside-a-pair-of-goggles and arguable ancestor of Nintendo’s 3DS – was a marvelous piece of technology for its time. In a small tabletop unit, you were able to play true 3D video games at an impressive 384 x 224 pixel resolution. Of course the VirtualBoy was a complete failure, but that doesn’t mean hardware tinkerers are leaving this wonderful system to video game collectors. [furrtek] has been playing around with his VirtualBoy and managed to add VGA out.
As a 3D system with two displays, any sort of video out was rightfully ignored by the VirtualBoy system designers. Still, [furrtek] wanted some sort of video out on his system, so he began poking around with a small FPGA board to generate some VGA signals.
The two displays inside the VirtualBoy aren’t your normal LCD display – as seen in this iFixit teardown. they’re really two linear LED arrays that generate a single line of 244 pixels, with mirrors scanning the line in the in the Y axis. These LED arrays are controlled by the VirtualBoy CPU through a series of shift registers, and by carefully tapping the lines of each LED array, [furrtek] was able to copy all the image data into the RAM of an FPGA.
After stuffing an XESS XULA-200 FPGA board inside the case of his VirtualBoy, [furrtek] wired up a few resistors for a DAC and installed a VGA out port on the underside of his console. Everything worked the first time he powered it up, and he began playing his VirtualBoy on his big screen TV.
Because [furrtek] is only reading one of the VirtualBoy’s displays, all the 3D data – and the main feature of the VirtualBoy – is lost when it’s displayed on a TV. 3D TVs do exist, though, and we’d love to see an improved version of this that captures data from both of the VirtualBoy displays.

The experimental Real Time Save feature of Wood for the R4iDSN has been updated. Please see the change log for more information.
Important Distinction
Now, there are so many fake Wood R4 versions which have nothing to do with me. Only Wood R4 for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com), and AK RPG are supported by me. I can only fix bugs for these specific releases. Do not post bug reports or ask for updates for clone cards running a fake version of Wood.
Change Log said:
•many code optimizations.
•fixed dma store/load at arm7.
•fixed bug that cause freeze after leaving rts menu in following games: ◦harvest moon ds cute
◦sid meier's civilization revolution

Snes9x Git (2013/06/16) is compiled. Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It basically allows you to play most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems on your PC or Workstation; which includes some real gems that were only ever released in Japan. Snes9x is the result of well over three years worth of part-time hacking, coding, recoding, debugging, divorce, etc. (just kidding about the divorce bit). Snes9x is coded in C++, with three assembler CPU emulation cores on the i386 Linux and Windows ports.
Snes9x Git changelog:
- win32: make controller command line parameters work
- win32: fix d3d cg problems

Fceux SVN r2965 is compiled. FCEUX is a cross platform, NTSC and PAL Famicom/NES emulator that is an evolution of the original FCE Ultra emulator. Over time FCE Ultra had separated into many separate branches. The concept behind FCEUX is to merge elements from FCE Ultra, FCEU rerecording, FCEUXD, FCEUXDSP, and FCEU-mm into a single branch of FCEU. As the X implies, it is an all-encompassing FCEU emulator that gives the best of all worlds for the general player, the ROM-hacking community, and the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Community.
Fceux SVN changelog:

---------------------
r2964
* Taseditor: handle "Insert Coin" command correctly (no recording while seeking/etc) * Taseditor: updated docs

GBA.js Git (2013/06/11) is released. Jeffrey Pfau released a new GameBoy Advance emulator. The project began last July. The first prototype took him five weeks. But it has worked for several weeks and several hours a day online prior to the first public version. The program runs on JavaScript. It is available online and works in a modern web browser. It runs on Chrome 20, Safari 6.0, Firefox 15 + (without sound) or Opera 12. It should also run on Internet Explorer 10. Firefox and Opera are particularly slow, it is better to use Safari or Chrome.
As a matter of law, no rom is provided on the official website. However, you can load these roms on your machine. The emulator does not handle compressed files. So please only download roms decompressed. The application sometimes crashes if the file has special characters.
Currently all parts of the GameBoy Advance hardware are implemented. You can save and load backups, send on your machine or your machine. GBA.js is able to take screenshots. It can set the emulation paused. It supports games containing real-time clocks (eg Pokemon).
GBA.js Git Changelog:
* Use generic AudioContext instead of webkitAudioContext

Project 64 (2.1) Fruit Edition v1.0 is released. Project64 is a proprietary Nintendo 64 emulator for Windows.
The old text over there, is crap. It has nothing to do with the current concept now. I'm currently working on the source code of PJ64 2.1. My goal is to modify PJ64 to allow far better NetPlay, and some new debugging tools. Of course, there's a debugger, but this one doesn't feature the R4300i Commands anymore, cause zilmar decided to delete them. I still don't ****ing understand why, but whatever. I will readd it myself later.
Updates:
- Fixed some upcoming LW, SW compilation errors. They're finally eliminated.
- Memory View in Debugger somehow messed up, when you were going to an extended position higher than 0x807FFFFF. This was also fixed.
I think that was everything.
Instructions:
1. Select ROM and use it.
2. Go to Options -> Settings
3. Select: "Config: GameName"
4. Then look for "Memory Size".
5. Select your RDRAM size. You can select 4MB, 8MB, 12MB, 16MB or 20MB RDRAM max.
6. ???
7. Profit.

Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin clears up some confusion about the game's confirmed platforms

That seemed to be the case with a few choice words spoken by Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin, whose talk about Wii U on a web show with GameSpot made some in the media believe Call of Duty: Ghosts is definitely coming to Nintendo's console. Speaking with GamesIndustry International at E3, however, Rubin clarified that a Wii U version of the new Call of Duty is far from a guaranteed thing.
"That's probably in the next-gen bin, but we're not actually talking about Wii U yet. 'Cause we want to keep it mysterious," he told GameSpot on stage at E3.
When we asked him about whether Call of Duty is coming to Wii U, however, he remarked, "Ha! You know that's funny, because I don't even know the answer to that. I swear to God, I don't. I was trying to say in the interview [that] I really don't know and I'm not supposed to talk about it. I'm not supposed to talk about the fact that I don't know."
Speaking hypothetically, we pressed Rubin on how well the new Call of Duty: Ghosts would perform on Wii U hardware. Could it look as good as the other current-gen SKUs?
"I imagine [it could], yeah. If you look at the hardware specs, I think it would be more in line with 360 and PS3, but I'm not sure. There could be some things [in the hardware] that bump it up a little higher than that," he answered. "I haven't played with it enough to know. I have one at home, and I think it's cool; I can't stop playing ZombiU."
So there you have it. Wii U may or may not receive the brand-new Call of Duty game, which is pretty much the same information we had prior to E3. Ghosts is currently confirmed for PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and next-gen on PS4 and Xbox One.
We'll have lots more from Rubin on Call of Duty and the industry in our full interview, to be posted in the near future.

Batman publisher president Martin Tremblay on continuing support for Nintendo's latest, next-gen console prices, the used games uproar, and improving digital sales reporting
[h=3]Warner Bros. Entertainment[/h]
[h=3]Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment[/h]
After a slow start for Nintendo's Wii U, Electronic Artshas visibly backed off supporting the system, whileActivision and Ubisoft are publicly indecisive about continuing to create games for the platform. There's at least one third-party publisher still in Nintendo's corner, if comments made to GamesIndustry International by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay are anything to go by.
"We're a believer on the Wii U," Tremblay said during an interview at last week's Electronic Entertainment Expo. "Honestly, we hope everybody's going to work out. It's just good for the industry."
While Tremblay stressed that he was proud of how titles like Scribblenauts Unlimited, Batman: Arkham City, and the Nintendo-published Lego City Undercover performed, he clearly wanted to see more contributions from the platform.
"I think the console has been off to a slow start, but I think they're going to fix the problem," Tremblay said. "I don't think it's a problem, but it's more about the content. And I think they showed tons of new content [at E3] that will re-energize the platform."
Tremblay also weighed in on the announced price points for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, lauding the latter's $399 tag while diplomatically refraining from specific comment on Microsoft's $499 offering.
"Honestly, I'm very pleased with Sony's price point," Tremblay said. "This is spot-on what I think the price point needs to be, and it will energize and make the transition easier. That being said, we'll see how consumers are going to go for it. We're building for both platforms. We like both. The specs are amazing on both sides. But I really do like Sony's price point; this is something that can give us a chance to succeed quicker."
As for the new system's differing stances on used games, Tremblay said he didn't think they would shift the sales mix of multiplatform titles one way or the other. And in instances where some of the control is at the publisher's discretion, Tremblay said he didn't expect to deviate from the way things work at the moment.
"You've got to listen to your consumers," Tremblay said when asked about the uproar over the Xbox One restricting used game sales. "You've got to listen to people playing the game. That's very important. I think I was a little bit surprised, to be honest…Now that we see that coming and we see what people want, just go with it. That's the way I look at it."
Tremblay seemed to welcome that sort of enthusiasm after years of people voicing concerns about the sustainability of the console industry, and the challenges it had faced as a result of the longer-than-usual hardware generation. While E3 might not have put those concerns to rest, Tremblay seemed quite pleased with how it began to address them.
"The show feels reenergized," Tremblay said. "The announcement of both platforms is fresh air to the industry. We needed that heartbeat. The Wii U was a good thing to get something new in the market, but now Sony and Microsoft are coming up pretty strong with devices that are going to be amazing from a development perspective and a commercial perspective."
Finally, Tremblay addressed the lack of digital sales transparency in the industry, which the Entertainment Software Association is looking to improve upon. It might find some willing partners, as Tremblay said WBIE "would do everything we can on our side to participate in this." The executive underscored the dearth of clarity in the digital space, noting that even WBIE didn't have a firm grasp on just how lucrative it was until it converted Lord of the Rings Online into a free-to-play game and got into the mobile market itself.

During an analyst briefing, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata discussed some of the challenges that the Wii U faces in regards to its competition with the upcoming Xbox One and PlayStation 4.In particular, he talked about how people don’t seem to quite understand the role of the GamePad. “I would say that ‘Nintendo Land’ has not fulfilled the same role as ‘Wii Sports’ did when we bundled it with Wii,” he said, attempting to explain why consumers haven’t accepted the GamePad in the same way they gravitated towards the motion controllers of the previous generation.“Of course, we won’t remain silent and do nothing,” he continued. We are going to release a variety of Wii U software, and with each title, we would like to show how convenient and delightful it is to have the Wii U GamePad controller, and how it changes the gaming experience.” He then pointed to Pikmin 3 as a game that could fulfill that role.As for third party support, Iwata said Nintendo plans on continuing to developer quality software to sell the console, which will, in turn, draw outside developers in to develop for the platform. In order to do so, however, Nintendo must compete with the ever-growing smartphone and tablet gaming scene. Iwata knows this.“Under these circumstances, we feel that it is important to offer games that are even more polished than before in terms of quality to have consumers buy our products, understand the value that they offer and recommend them to others by word-of-mouth,” he said. “It now requires incredibly high-quality products to satisfy consumers to the level where they feel compelled to recommend them to others; the barriers are indeed higher than before.“We had to push back the releases of some games because it has become more difficult to satisfy the quality standards that we feel are necessary for games to satisfy before they are released. It was not because it took us more time to take advantage of what is unique about the hardware.”It is important to note, however, that Iwata repeatedly stated that there are, in fact, third party developers actively making games for the Wii U.

3DS owners woke up to a pleasant surprise this morning in their StreetPass Mii Plaza. One system update later, and the app has been transformed, offering access to four new games that are a little deeper and more involving than StreetPass Quest and Puzzle Swap, but delivered with similar levels of polish, charm and beautifully judged writing. They come at a cost, however – £4.49 each, to be precise, or £13.49 for a bundle containing all four. With little but a brief description to go off – delivered, as is the Nintendo way, by a rabbit holding a tablet – it seems a little steep, particularly given that Japanese players get the same deal for around ten pounds. That said, all four demonstrate plenty of potential, and their value can only really be judged when their content has been exhausted. Perhaps more significantly, the games represent a step forward for Nintendo in terms of premium content: it has already dabbled in microtransactions for the likes of New Super Mario Bros. 2 and Fire Emblem: Awakening, while its first major slice of DLC arrives later this week in the form of New Super Luigi U. But this is an unprecedented expansion to in-built software, and anyone who isn’t prepared to pay will be left with four barren spaces in the app’s Play menu.

The Xbox 360’s iron grip on the North American market has finally been released.
Joystiq reports that the latest numbers from NPD show that, despite flat sales, Nintendo’s 3DS was the best selling hardware in North America in May. That it beat Microsoft’s machine means that Xbox 360 must have suffered a significant year-on-year sales dip.
Microsoft released a press release claiming that Xbox 360 “sold more than any other console in the US for the 29th consecutive month” but this is only true if handhelds are not factored into the numbers.
However, May was described by NPD as “a slow month overall” although all the successes were Nintendo’s – the 3DS claimed three different spots in the Top Ten, boasting a 60 per cent annual boost in software sales
Here’s the North American May Top Ten
1. Injustice: Gods Among Us (Sony)
2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Activision)
3. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Nintendo)
4. Dead Island: Riptide (Deeps Silver)
5. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Nintendo)
6. Metro: Last Light (Deep Silver)
7. NBA 2K13 (2K Games)
8. Bioshock Infinite (2K Games)
9. Battlefield 3 (EA)
10. LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Warner)

If the madness of E3 (and the promise of some big titles) has recently pulled you back to Nintendo's handheld, you might be greeted with a firmware update next time you open up that well-worn 3DS. Aside from improved stability and bug fixes, there's new save data backup feature which will hold on to save files for your downloaded 3DS titles as well as Virtual Console games. Appearing already in Europe, version 6.0.0-11 also bundles in a new shop for the Mii Plaza, with StreetPass Squad, StreetPass Garden, StreetPass Battle, StreetPass Mansion all priced at 5 euros, or 15 euros for the whole set. No word on yet on when the update will arrive on the other side of the Atlantic, but given past form, we'd expect it to arrive some time this month.

Nintendo is working a new free-to-play rendition of Steel Diver.
Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed the news to IGN, following previous reports that the firm was already working an unnamed free-to-play title.
"There is something we're doing with the Steel Diver idea that I think is going to open things up with that game... It's going to be very fun," hinted Miyamoto.
Steal Diver is a relatively new IP that made its debut as a 3DS launch titlein 2011. It sees players taking control of a submarine in 2D levels, operating its controls on the touch screen to navigate the vessel through tight underwater caverns and shoot enemies.
While Miyamoto held off confirming a platform for the new title, or whether it'd be a remake or entirely new game, he did hint at ideas for an enhanced multiplayer mode.
"We're exploring from a perspective of where we can take that from a multiplayer standpoint - it's going to have this four-player battle mode that I think is going to be very interesting," he said.
In our review, we gave Steel Diver a 7/10 score. "Brief though it may be, it's an experience you won't get anywhere else, and while it isn't quite the Shigsy's Magical World Of Submarines we'd sort of hoped for, there's still plenty of fun to be had in its shallow waters," we said in summary.
Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has said recently that Nintendo will not use the free-to-play model with "trusted" IPs such as Mario or Pokemon, but for new products that are yet to establish themselves with consumers.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has said that Nintendo will use the free-to-play model to introduce new IP that need to earn the "trust" of consumers.
While Nintendo's two leading platforms, Wii U and 3DS, afford the firm flexibility with software monetization, Iwata says Nintendo will only pursue free-to-play with unestablished franchises.
"We are not planning to offer, for example, Mario or Pokémon games in a free-to-play format," confirmed Iwata in a recent E3 analysis briefing.
"With games like Mario and Pokémon, we already have a sufficient degree of trust with our consumers who are willing to pay a certain sum of money to purchase our products as packaged software. On the other hand, what are we to do when we want to offer a completely new product whose value consumers are yet to understand? Consumers are not sure if it is worth outlaying a certain sum of money for such a product.
"In such circumstances, our current platforms (Nintendo 3DS and Wii U), which give us various monetization options that would not have been possible on past Nintendo platforms, enable us to make propositions in a free-to-play format," he said.
Free-to-play games are often criticised for enforcing overly-restrictive measures in efforts to force players to make continuous micro transactions that, in some cases, can end up being more expensive than buying a full-priced game. Iwata went on to stress the importance of a free-to-play model that doesn't extort the player.
"On the other hand, free-to-play games, if unbalanced, could result in some consumers paying extremely large amounts of money, and we can certainly not expect to build a good relationship with our consumers in this fashion.," said Iwata. "In order to have a favorable long-term relationship, we would like to offer free-to-play games that are balanced and reasonable."
Elsewhere in the briefing, Iwata blamed the lack of Wii U games this year on the necessity for software to be more polished and offer more value than ever before.

Sony and Microsoft are preparing to launch their high-end consoles at the end of the year, but Nintendo is entirely unfazed, according to Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime.
The PS4 is expected to pose a particular threat to Wii U with its$400/£349 price point - just $50/£50 more than the 'Deluxe/Premium' version of Nintendo's significantly lower-spec machine. But Fils-Aime brushes off the challenge.
"It puts no pressure on us at all," Fils-Aime insisted during a chat withKotaku. "Sony and Microsoft are going to do what they're going to do. My bet is that there are going to be more announcements the closer we get to whatever their launch date is."
He went on, "From my perspective, I can't focus on that. I have to focus on: How do we satisfy the needs of all of the consumers out there with Nintendo products? How do we make sure they understand our proposition? How do we make sure they're excited about the software that we offer? And from that standpoint we're going to let our competition do what they're going to do."
Wii U has struggled at retail in its early life largely due to a lack of compelling software releases, which is something Nintendo aims to rectify in the run up to Christmas.
"You know, I think by the end of this holiday, after we've launched Wind Waker, after we've launched Donkey Kong Country, after we've launched Mario 3D World, I think we're going to be in a very good position," said Fils-Aime.
Nintendo used E3 last week to show off several major new Wii U titlesincluding Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros, Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3.

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has put the lack of Wii U games this year down to the necessity for software to be more polished and offer more value than ever before.
Iwata contests that customers are much harder to please in an age of free-to-play and $1 smartphone games. "I think it is becoming increasingly more difficult to have consumers understand and appreciate the value that a particular game offers than ever before," he said in Nintendo's E3 Analyst Briefing.
"For example, it is now common to find on smart devices a large volume of products categorized as games selling for one dollar. With countless games offered for free, consumers are far more careful than ever to decide whether it is worthwhile to spend dozens of dollars to buy one game," he added.
This, says Iwata, makes adding extra value and polish to $60 games paramount to the success of Wii U, which has drastically underperformed at retail since its November 2012 release.
"Under these circumstances, we feel that it is important to offer games that are even more polished than before in terms of quality to have consumers buy our products, understand the value that they offer and recommend them to others by word-of-mouth," commented Iwata.
"The barriers are indeed higher than before," he added.
"Moreover, it is not an easy task to regain the trust of the fans of a franchise once you lose it. Therefore, it is critical for us to improve and re-polish any game that we feel is still lacking in quality. Failing to do so, we feel, would be detrimental to what makes our strong franchises the valuable assets that they are."
Iwata explains that it's this push for quality that's caused delays, not issues with developing for the console itself.
"We had to push back the releases of some games because it has become more difficult to satisfy the quality standards that we feel are necessary for games to satisfy before they are released. It was not because it took us more time to take advantage of what is unique about the hardware," he said.
"On the other hand, we have become more experienced as we continue to develop software on our platforms, and we have gradually been able to predict more accurately how long it will take a particular game to meet our quality standards. There has been a software shortage in the past two years (for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U) in the early stages of their product lifecycles because it took us time to meet our quality standards."
Nintendo is under increasing pressure to turn the Wii U's fortunes around. Electronic Arts said recently that it will resume full support for Wii U when it "becomes a viable platform" on which to sell games.
Nintendo used E3 last week to show off several major new Wii U titlesincluding Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros, Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3.

Human rights organisation Walk Free has launched a campaign targeting Nintendo.
The body seeks assurances that Nintendo hardware doesn’t use slave-mined minerals, which can arrive on the global market from troubled regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, in any of its hardware.
A petition demanding confirmation on the issue and an audit of Nintendo’s supply chain has so far attracted over 400,000 signatures, the group claims.
It has created a video, which can be seen below, and a Flash game, which can be found on the official website, to try and draw attention to the issue.
“While this parody allows gamers to demand that Nintendo articulate credible steps to ensure slavery is not in its supply chain, slavery is not a game,” Walk Free’s movement director Debra Rosen stated.
“We’re not mocking the problem, we’re poking fun at the absurdity of Nintendo’s lack of response. Nintendo – as the world’s largest maker of video game machines – should be leading other consumer electronics companies in showing the public that they are working to have a supply chain free of slavery. Instead, they are lagging behind.”
Nintendo has in the past also been criticised for its green credentials. In 2007 Greenpeace scored Nintendo a flat zero in its global electronics manufacturers study and the following year claimed the company had no environmental policies.

We are to blame.” That’s the message from Nintendo boss Saturo Iwata regarding the disappointing sales of the Wii U.
“"We are to blame. We relaxed our [marketing] efforts, so the consumers today still cannot understand what's so good and unique about the Wii U," Iwata told CNBC, as reported by GameSpot.
"We have been unsuccessful in coming up with one single software with which people can understand, 'OK, this is really different'. As long as people have hands-on [experience], they can appreciate the value of the Wii U, but because there's not software that's simple and obvious for people as 'Wii Sports' for the Wii, potential consumers do not feel like trying the Wii U."
Nintendo currently forecasts global sales of 9m units for the Wii U throughout the current fiscal year – a target that means the console will significantly step up its sales rate.
In a separate interview Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed that the Wii U was let down by a weak software line-up at launched that lacked key titles – namely, no Zelda and no Wii Sports equivalent.

Plaintiff IA Labs loses dispute over Wii tech, is ordered to pay more than $236,000 in legal fees
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Game companies don't often comment on litigation, but Nintendo has made a habit of trumpeting its numerous patent suit victories since the 2006 debut of the Wii. Today the company touted another such victory, as the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld a District Court judge's 2012 ruling for Nintendo in a patent suit over Wii Fit and other bits of Wii technology.
The suit was filed by IA Labs (Powergrid Fitness) in 2010, and alleged patent infringements relating to the Wii, Wii Balance Board, Wii Wheel and Wii MotionPlus. Nintendo won the case in lower court last year, with a judge determining the Mario maker had not violated any patent rights of IA Labs. The fitness company was then ordered to pay Nintendo more than $236,000 to cover legal fees, a decision upheld by the Court of Appeals.
"We are very pleased with the court's decision," Nintendo of America deputy general counsel Richard Medway said in a statement. "Nintendo has a long history of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We also vigorously defend patent lawsuits, like the IA Labs lawsuit, when we firmly believe that we have not infringed another party's patent."

Iwata accepts blame for console's struggles, dismisses possibility of a price cut
[h=3]Nintendo[/h]nintendo-europe.com
Nintendo may have laid the groundwork for a Wii U recovery at E3, but until that recovery actually happens, company president Satoru Iwata will have to talk about exactly what went wrong with the system launch and how it can be fixed. In an interview with CNBC at the show last week, Iwata spoke to those concerns once more, and singled out the company's marketing push (or lack thereof) as a factor.
"We are to blame," Iwata said. "We relaxed our [marketing] efforts, so the consumers today still cannot understand what's so good and unique about the Wii U. Because we're always trying to be unique, it takes some energies on our side to [make] people understand the real attractions about whatever we are doing."
The console's lack of an ubiquitous system seller like Wii Sports has further stymied those efforts, another shortcoming Iwata acknowledged.
"We have been unsuccessful in coming up with one single software with which people can understand, 'OK, this is really different,'" Iwata said. "As long as people have hands-on [experience], they can appreciate the value of the Wii U, but because there's not software that's simple and obvious for people as Wii Sports for the Wii, potential consumers do not feel like trying the Wii U."
Another problem for the Wii U has been the lack of software support, the same problem Nintendo acknowledged with the 3DS and said it would not repeat for the Wii U. However, Iwata said the company reallocated resources for production crunches leading up to the Wii U launch. They managed to get the system out in time, but that pushed back development schedules on a number of games, and lower than expected sales of the hardware have since spurred some third-party developers to scale back support for the system, aggravating the problem.
Despite Nintendo's difficult situation with the Wii U, Iwata ruled out a price cut along the lines of the one used to spark interest in the 3DS after the handheld's slow start. Iwata is reluctant to resort to such a measure, he said, "because from the very beginning we came up with a very aggressive price point. We do not think [a price cut] is a very easy option to take."

Nintendo is unlikely to introduce a Wii U price cut because the console already sits at 'an aggressive price point', according to company CEO Satoru Iwata.
Nintendo used a price cut to turn around the early-life sales slump of the 3DS, slashing almost a third off its asking price (from $249 to $169.99 in the US).Retailers have voiced their desirefor a similar Wii U price cut, but such a tactic is 'not an easy option' for Nintendo, says Iwata.
"From the very beginning we came up with a very aggressive price point. We do not think [a price cut] is a very easy option to take," the exec toldCNBC.
Iwata admitted that a 'relaxed' marketing campaign was partially at fault for Wii U's poor sales, as the company struggles to communicate the uniqueness of Wii U to potential consumers.
"We are to blame," said Iwata. "We relaxed our [marketing] efforts, so the consumers today still cannot understand what's so good and unique about the Wii U. Because we're always trying to be unique, it takes some energies on our side to [make] people understand the real attractions about whatever we are doing."
A general lack of software is also a part of the problem, but Iwata points the finger more specifically at the lack of game that really shows off the system in the way Wii Sports did on the original Wii.
"We have been unsuccessful in coming up with one single software with which people can understand, 'OK, this is really different,'" he said.
"As long as people have hands-on [experience], they can appreciate the value of the Wii U, but because there's not software that's simple and obvious for people as 'Wii Sports' for the Wii, potential consumers do not feel like trying the Wii U. Our challenge today is with the software lineup we are introducing now, we have to encourage [people] to experience the Wii U in the first place."
Nintendo used E3 last week to show off several major new Wii U titlesincluding Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros, Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and Pikmin 3

We all thought the same thing when we saw the zero-gravity stuff in Mario Kart 8 – where’s the new F-Zero game from Nintendo?
The answer – there isn’t one. And there may not be one for a very long time.
"I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game," Nintendo design boss Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN. "I think where I struggle is that I don’t really have a good idea for what’s new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again.
“Certainly I can see how people looking at Mario Kart 8 could see, through the anti-gravity, a connection to F-Zero. But I don’t know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero.
"Obviously in the past we’ve tried to work with other companies, where we’ve let them develop games for us in franchises like Star Fox and F-Zero, but the more we think about it, the more we prefer to be able to create those games internally, on our own.
“We’ve obviously been working on what we can do to increase our internal staff in a way that will allow us to have more projects going at the same time, so we can create new games and work on additional old IP and still maintain the other primary franchises that people want to see."
Is there an irony in Nintendo saying that it’s not planning on a new F-Zero because it can’t think of anything new to add? After all, one criticism often levelled at Nintendo’s feet is that it has consistently failed to evolve any of its key brands arguably since the days of N64.

Hopes that Wii U might increase its competitive position via a price cut in the run-up to Christmas have seemingly been dashed.
That’s because Nintendo has already priced the Wii U as competitively as is financially possible, CEO Satoru Iwata told CNBC, as spotted by GamesRadar.
“From the very beginning we came up with a very aggressive price point,” he stated. “We do not think [a price cut] is a very easy option to take.
"I do not think we should become too pessimistic about the current situation with the Wii U. I think we should pour that time and energy into our [development] efforts, so eventually we can encourage third-party [publishers] to want to support Nintendo."
Wii U currently retails at two prices - £300 for the Premium SKU and £250 for the struggling Basic SKU. Both SKUs have been heavily discounted at various times across UK retail, however.
Iwata still believes that the key to saving Wii U is getting the console into consumers’ hands.
"As long as people have hands-on [experience], they can appreciate the value of the Wii U,” he argued. “But because there's not software that's simple and obvious for people as Wii Sports for the Wii, potential consumers do not feel like trying the Wii U.
“Our challenge today is with the software line-up we are introducing now, we have to encourage [people] to experience the Wii U in the first place."

Former Rare developer and Conker's Bad Fur Day game designer Chris Seavor is working on a new 2D platformer for Wii U and 3DS.
Seavor and fellow ex-Rare man Shawn Pile have revealed The Unlikely Legend of Rusty Pup viaNintendoLife, set for a 2014 release.
Described as a 2D platformer "with depth" and "moments of dark humour", the game sees you help Rusty make his way through a range of obstacles.
"Rather than you're controlling him to get from A to B", explains Seavor, "you're controlling everything else to make sure that he doesn't die. Within that framework, you've got your traditional kind of gameplay - platforms that move, monsters that get out of the way, monsters which don't - but Rusty always has a relationship with you. You're the narrator. So in that way, it's like a God game - it's not strictly a God game, but it's got narration and this mysterious figure - which is you,' he described.
Seavor admitted he's being secretive with one of the game's "core" gameplay mechanics because "we don't know whether it works or not yet", and it may change. But he describes it as "something you do which will effect something else in the gameworld".
The game will also focus on narrative. "It's all very much about the story," says Seavor. "It's a very sad tale."
The game will be released as a digital title via the Wii U and 3DS eShops next year.

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai explains why every character that has appeared in the series in the past won't feature in the latest Super Smash Bros.
In an interview with NowGamer, Sakurai revealed that the new Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS will not include every character from the series' past, because there isn't enough time to recreate them all.
"Adding new characters is not a simple addition," he says. "It's really multiplication. The amount of work, adding a character is multiplied and becomes bigger and bigger as you go. We can't because of the amount of work it takes. However, I do believe I understand that each character has its own set of fans out there who really like that character."
Sakurai does say that the team will do what it can, but braces players for disappointment. "[We'll] put in as many characters as we can, we really want to do that, because it's good for the fans and good for all of us. But in the event that we do have to cut some characters, I'd like to apologise in advance to those fans."
During E3 two Super Smash Bros. trailers were revealed, with one introducing the Wii Fit Trainer as a playable character, the other showcasing Mega Man's addition to the roster. The trailers also confirmed a 2014 release date.
In a recent Developer Direct video, Masahiro Sakurai spoke about the distinct visual styles used in the Wii U and 3DS version of Super Smash Bros, as well as the improved graphical fidelity and new effects.

11 years: that's how long it took Nintendo to top Super Mario 64 with Galaxy. For over a decade, this astonishing, genre-redefining game reigned supreme, towering above all its peers, an influence not only on every other 3D platformer but on every game with a three-dimensional world. How do you follow that?In 2002 Nintendo's answer was to send Mario on holiday - and fair enough, the guy probably deserved a bit of a break. The result was one of the most divisive Mario games ever, one that was swiftly consigned to a footnote in Nintendo's rich history: I've read many interviews with Miyamoto, Yoshiaki Koizumi and other Nintendo execs over the years, and Sunshine barely warrants a mention when the subject turns to the publisher's most famous creation.11 years: that's how long it's been since I first played Super Mario Sunshine for the first time. Times have changed, and Mario's moved on, but this curious anomaly still remains as dangerous and exciting as it seemed when I slotted that tiny disc into my GameCube and closed the lid with that gorgeous, satisfying clunk. Because, when it comes down to it, there's not really been anything quite like Sunshine since. The adorable Noki have only appeared in a handful of games since Sunshine, most notably a playable cameo in Mario Superstar Baseball, where they enjoyed a strong chemistry with Toadette.
Sunshine is defined as much by what it gets wrong as what it gets right. It's the rare Mario game where you find yourself remembering its bad bits. Every Mario has duff moments or forgettable stages, but they're quickly cast aside in favour of listing their brilliant touches - Dire Dire Docks' music, Buoy Base, the end of Slimy Spring Galaxy - whereas parts of Sunshine are so awful they're impossible to forget. The story is dire, its introduction interminable and embarrassing. The camera struggles terribly with the complex level geometry, most notably in the indoor stages, often resorting to representing Mario as a shadow behind scenery. The Shadow Mario chases are limp. Bowser. Piantas. Pachinko. Some of those can be explained - if not excused - by Nintendo rushing the final stages of development: it's since admitted it had to hurry Sunshine to market because of overwhelming demand and the lack of third-party titles to fill release gaps. And where have we heard that before? But that would be to ignore all Sunshine gets right. For starters, those void levels. Of the few debts Galaxy owes to its predecessor, the most significant comes in the moments when Mario's stripped of water pack FLUDD - more on which shortly - and forced to tackle increasingly difficult obstacle courses with nothing more than his own prodigious gymnastic abilities. It's a neat twist, of course, on that classic Metroid trick of allowing you to get used to extra powers before cruelly snatching them away. With Mario more skittish than he was in 64, a bundle of nervous energy wall-kicking up glass-fronted cases and sprinting over shifting sand platforms, there's a constant heart-in-mouth thrill to each of these secret stages, the impossibly jaunty music masking some of the steepest challenges Mario's ever faced - and all without the gravitational safety net he's often afforded in Galaxy. Each gap leads to nothing but an endless void, every hop, step and jump closer to the Shine sprite at the finish line upping the stakes. The platforming may not actually be that much tougher than before, but knowing that one slip is enough to send you spiralling into oblivion makes it all the more nerve-wracking.Then there's FLUDD. Perhaps, if Professor E.Gadd's much-maligned water pack had remained a silent partner like Luigi's Poltergust-3000 it wouldn't be quite so hated, but its frequent interjections - through a voice that suggests someone's flicked Steven Hawking's voice box to the 'Bart Simpson' setting - proved an obstacle too large for many to overcome. Pity, as FLUDD is a big part of what makes Sunshine special, expanding Mario's moveset and acting as a convenient safety net for any misjudgements.

Claymation point-and-clicker Armikrog has until Thursday, June 27 to reach its $900,000 Kickstarter goal, but developer Pencil Test Studios decided it's never too late to add a stretch goal to its funding initative. In this case, the former Neverhood developers added a $950,000 stretch goal to its campaign that would bring the game to Wii U.
An update on the project noted that Nintendo "fast-tracked" Pencil Test Studios to become a licensed Wii U developer, and the studio said Nintendo contacted it recently to see if the developer would be interest in bringing Armikrog to Wii U. Of course, the project still has a few days to reach its initial goal; the project currently sits at $635,887.

Changing demographics are pushing the industry to new gender roles, says industry icon
The creator of Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda has spoken out on the 'damsel in distress' archetype he helped popularise in games.
Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto told Kotaku that the industry must be responsive to the increased demand for more playable female characters and be open to storylines that don't keep women locked in a castle.
"Even as far back as Mario Kart, we had females who wanted to be able to play as female characters and we obviously saw the addition of Princess Peach early on in that series," he said.
"And gradually, over time, we started to see the desire for other-balanced female characters."
The article noted that new games on the Wii U have more female characters for players to chose from, and Miyamoto said this means having women that aren't just the dainty sort portrayed by Princess Peach.

Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key has said the company is still "big supporters" of the Wii U, saying it adds a "new dimension to gaming."
Key's message comes despite Ubisoft chief executive Yves Guillemot saying the Wii U needs more sales before exclusives can be justified.
During an interview with IGNTony Key said, "as a company, we like the Wii U. We really believe that the second screen can add a new dimension to gaming."
Key reiterates that "[Ubisoft are] still big supporters of that system. We have just as many games coming out on Wii U this year as we did at launch. So we like the second screen. We think there are opportunities with all these games to extend them - to another person, to another location. We're taking it very seriously."
According to Key mobile companion apps will make the second screen experience worthwhile. Of the Wii U, Key says that "it's not necessarily next-generation, but it's next-generation thinking. We want to extend the experience to whatever screen is handy. We have been looking for ways to take advantage of these second screens. Those companion apps are our first attempt at doing that."
Ubisoft is one of the biggest third-party supporters of the Wii U, withSplinter Cell: Blacklist, Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flagall seeing a release on the console this year.

A little-known Mega Man game released for Game Gear in 1995 could be making its way to the 3DS eShop as a Virtual Console title.
US game ratings board ESRB has posted a new listing for the game which, without any formal announcement having been made, typically points to a revival via Nintendo's retro game emulation service.
Game Gear's 'Mega Man' was outsourced to a studio called Freestyle and only released in North America by publisher US Gold.
Despite its title, the game is not a port of the NES original, but consists of a mix of components from Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 5.
Mega Man titles have featured prominently in Nintendo's eShop updates in recent months, with all six of the NES games and Mega Man X on Super Nintendo having arrived in Japan and US. We expect Mega Man's sole Game Gear appearance to crop up on Nintendo's eShop lists soon.

Nintendo Japan is airing a Pikmin 3-focused Direct broadcast tomorrow, June 26. The video sees Shigeru Miyamoto joined by comedian Hitoshi Matsumoto to discuss the critter-crammed Wii U game. The broadcast is scheduled for 8PM in Japan, which converts to 7AM ET (4AM PT, midday Brit-time), and you can watch it right hyah. There's no news on any corresponding Directs for other regions.
The game itself is a matter of weeks away: North America greens its fingers when Pikmin 3 arrives on August 4, while the game plants itself in Japanese and European soils on July 13 and 26 respectively.

Star Wars Pinball is about to enter a galaxy not so far away: the Nintendo eShop on Wii U. The game will hit Nintendo's platform on July 11, and features tables based on The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett and The Clone Wars. Unfortunately, the Force won't be enough to grab the game – it'll cost you $10 (or €10).
Also, since this is a Star Wars re-release, you should know that all of the lightsabers have been replaced with walkie-talkies.

Nintendo of America senior director of corporate communications Charlie Scibetta has defended Nintendo's frequent Mario game releases, saying that they are in line with fan demand.
Nintendo raised eyebrows late last year when it release two 2D Mario platformers - New Super Mario Bros. 2 and New Super Mario Bros. U - within three months of each others.
At the E3 expo earlier this month Nintendo had another new Mario game on show, Super Mario 3D World, alongside numerous other Mario-themed games including Mario Kart 8 and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.
"We think we're putting out the right number of Mario games based on what fans are asking for, based on what our own developers' creative visions are," Scibetta told Shack News when quizzed on the risk of diluting the brand.
"The key to that is as long as there's innovation is occurring within the gameplay, as long as there's new features, then marrying the characters and the IPs that people love is the right call from our standpoint," he said.
Scibetta went on to contest that the innovations in each Mario release - such as the transparent warp pipes in Super Mario 3D World, he exampled - are as substantial as creating new IPs, but are simply branded with familiar franchises.
"If we didn't put Mario on it, then it would just seem like a new IP," said Scibetta.
"Because there's those new gameplay dynamics like that, we think there's the innovation there that will keep people interested and keep the Mario brand fresh.
"You could call all the games that we're making here new IP in the sense that they're new gameplay experiences. They just happen to also have the IP that people associate with.

Sonic: Lost World producer Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that the game will only have local multiplayer on Wii U, but online on the 3DS.
In an interview with Nintendo World Report, Iizuka confirmed that the Wii U and 3DS version will have different multiplayer modes.
"On the Wii U, there's booth cooperative and versus multiplayer," he says. "In cooperative play, Sonic will be using the Wii U GamePad and someone can be supporting Sonic in co-op with the Wii Remote. In versus mode, one player will be playing on the TV screen and the other player will be racing using the GamePad so you don't have to have split screen."
The Wii U's multiplayer will not be online, pushing for an "on the couch", shared experience. The 3DS version however, will be online supporting "4-player versus racing over Wi-Fi and the Internet."
Multiplayer is not the only aspect that will differ between the two versions. According to Iizuka, while the story and general theme of the levels and game will be the same in both versions, the level design will be completely different. "There's not a single level in the Wii U and the 3DS that overlap and appear in both games," he says.
Sonic: Lost World is the first Sonic title in a three-game deal to come from a partnership with Nintendo and Sega. You can see the game in action in this 12-minute gameplay video.

Nintendo increased the character limit for Miiverse posts and comments from 100 to 200 this week. The switch, made "by popular demand," applies to both the Wii U and web versions of the social network. Nintendo also fiddled with the 'popular posts' filter this week, allowing users to now see highly Yeah-ed posts going further back.
The character limit increase may seem a little trivial because Nintendo's social network is still in its infancy, but just imagine if Twitter decided to up its limit from 140 to 280. It would be pandemonium with a capital panda, we tell you.

Putting Nintendo franchises on smartphones would reach more players - but it might be economic suicide in the long-term
Amidst all the speculation and chatter about Nintendo's future, there are moments when it is crystal-clear exactly why the company has been such an intrinsic part of the world of videogames for nearly 30 years. Watching social networks light up with chatter about Animal Crossing: New Leaf - a game which lacks built-in social media functionality yet has provoked more sharing and discussion within my networks than any dedicated social title of the past five years - is one of those moments. At its very best, Nintendo is spectacularly, peerlessly and almost embarrassingly good at making games.
"Here we stand; a niche game launched on a handheld platform which every last ounce of conventional thinking declared dead on arrival two years ago"
In a sense, that is the factor that both drives and negates the often tedious debate over whether Nintendo should abandon hardware and focus its efforts on third-party publishing for mainstream platforms. That the discussion is so long-lived and so intense is a testament to the often unstated fact that Nintendo is not just a platform holder - it is also the most consistently successful and critically acclaimed publisher of games in the world. The unseemly vitriol of the platform wars may blind us to that fact on occasion, but the sheer depth and breadth of Nintendo's software and franchise catalogue is a match to any media company on earth, let alone any game publisher.
Animal Crossing, lest we forget, isn't even considered a top-rank Nintendo game. It will probably outsell most other games this year - Nintendo has, almost uniquely among publishers, mastered the knack of keeping its games selling consistently for months or even years, rather than relying on an initial sharp spike of demand to determine success or failure - yet alongside the likes of Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart and Pokemon, it's considered niche. Here we stand, though; a niche game launched on a handheld platform which every last ounce of conventional thinking declared dead on arrival a mere two years ago, yet I haven't seen such a consistent outpouring of social sharing of a game experience in a very long time. This speaks, of course, to the kind of people who comprise my social networks, yet beyond that I think it also hints at an extraordinary universalism which Nintendo has mastered far ahead of most of its rivals.
So here's the core of the argument - Nintendo enjoys a powerful universalism, an appeal that effortlessly leaps across gaps between demographic groups which seem to be gaping chasms to most other creators. Meanwhile, we've got a pair of new platforms - smartphones and tablets - which are doing the same thing to the world of hardware. Where a handheld game console might hope to sell a hundred million devices in its entire lifetime, Apple sold more than that number of iPhones last year alone, while Samsung's handsets more than doubled that number. Tablets, too, have become a device of choice among a huge range of demographic groups - my own mother, long possessed of the notion that touching the wrong button on a keyboard would cause the internet to explode, has now begun an unsubtle campaign suggesting that an iPad Mini would make an excellent birthday present.
"To switch to third-party development would be handing control of hardware creation to the uncaring whims of companies whose driving impulses have little to do with what makes great gameplay"
A software maker unrivalled at creating entertainment loved by everyone. Hardware platforms which excel at finding their way into the pockets and bags of everyone. It's a match made in heaven, surely? Is there not a sense of inevitability about the next iteration of Animal Crossing being a smartphone game - a sense that a game with such universal appeal is almost wasted by being confined to a platform with such niche appeal?
That sense absolutely does exist, however uncomfortable it may be for Nintendo's traditional fanbase - myself included. Oh, I recognise the discomfort well enough. Logically, rationally, I recognise that there are a lot of bonuses to smartphone gaming, not least that my smartphone is in my pocket all the time while my 3DS - lovely console though it may be - simply doesn't come out with me unless I'm carrying a bag or wearing a coat, which is probably less than half the time. I live in Tokyo, a city where it's altogether more common to see adults playing 3DS games in public than it would be in the UK, but that's still undeniably a factor too. The reality is that even given the obvious downsides of lacking the dual screens or the physical button controls, I'd probably play my 3DS software more if it was on my phone. I owned the superb The World Ends With You as a DS cartridge for many months before finally playing it - when it came out on iOS. And yet, and still... The notion of Nintendo developing for smartphones discomfits me. Something about the notion suggests a loss of the company's purity of purpose, the very thing that has made it so very, very good at what it does.
Traditionalist emotions aside, I think there are a few genuinely valid reasons for that feeling - some of which Satoru Iwata probably had in mind when he said recently that while developing for smartphones would probably make sense right now, staying the course would probably make more sense in the long run. The first and most obvious is that of all the platform holders, Nintendo has been the most successful at integrating its software and hardware development into a single symbiotic process. Software concepts inform Nintendo's hardware creations; its finest game design minds feed their ideas directly into the labs which create its consoles. The extent to which Nintendo's best games fit so snugly with the functionality of its hardware is absolutely no accident. To switch to third-party development would effectively be to throw away that hugely successful symbiosis - handing over control of hardware creation to the uncaring whims of companies like Apple and Samsung whose driving impulses will generally have little to do with what makes for great gameplay.
Great game development talent would survive that transition, of course, even if it lost a little something of its edge along the way. All the same, you are suddenly looking at a Nintendo which must compromise its vision to fit with devices that are fundamentally designed to let people tap out emails and look at webpages on a glass slab, rather than devices designed around the core notion of game interaction. It's not insurmountable, but it's still a blow to the very strengths which have made Nintendo's games great.
"Once you've released a free-to-play Mario and successfully monetised the game, does your audience still love Mario enough to buy the next one?"
The other concern, of course, is the business model. If we're going to talk about Nintendo being a master of universalism, there is very little in the world of games than is more truly universal in its reach than a free-to-play game on a smartphone platform. These games reach out to absolutely vast audiences undreamed-of by the traditional games business, as industry commentators and comment thread trolls are quick to point out at the drop of a hat. A single successful free-to-play game can easily achieve more downloads than an entire successful console platform's installed base. Isn't this where Nintendo's future must lie?
That's a dangerous argument for free-to-play advocates - who have many extremely good points and in whose camp I often find myself - to embark upon, though, because it starts to raise major questions about the value of a customer, or even the very definition of the word "customer". Yes, you may have had 10 million installs of your free-to-play game - but in the modern market, the first response to hearing that isn't "wow, amazing", it's "how much did that cost". Acquiring customers isn't free and making money from them isn't easy. How many of those people pay and how much they pay is another question entirely - and that's not even the toughest question. If you're Nintendo, with franchises in your stable which have been absolutely beloved and hugely commercially successful for three decades, the real question is this - once you've released a free-to-play Mario, reached a huge audience and successfully monetised the game, does your audience still love Mario enough to buy the next one, or have you just served the goose that laid the golden eggs up for a free-to-play dinner? I'm sure that it's possible for beloved franchises to retain their goodwill as free-to-play games - but if I was Nintendo, I'd wait to see evidence of that before committing the family jewels to the chase. (It's no coincidence, I'm sure, that the company's first free-to-play experiment on its own platforms will be a Steel Diver title - obscure enough that nobody will really care if it, ironically, sinks.)
"Nintendo's existing markets may be niche, but they're reliable niches that pay good money for high-quality software"
There's a Catch-22 at work here. Uncomfortable as the notion makes me as a game fan, the problems associated with moving to tablet and smartphone hardware are probably surmountable given Nintendo's development chops. Moreover, it would probably make sense in the end, both commercially and, I admit, from a gaming perspective. I'd play more Nintendo games, joyously, if they sat alongside the likes of Puzzle & Dragons on my phone. However, the Catch-22 arises from the free-to-play issue. I'm an advocate of free-to-play for many games, but Nintendo's classic franchises don't generally fit that profile - which is fine, except that the rise of free-to-play has, inevitably, muddied the waters for premium-priced games on smartphone and tablet platforms. I paid £8.99 for The World Ends With You through gritted teeth, because it was on the App Store, apparently oblivious to the fact that I'd paid £20 for it on the DS previously. Our perception of value on those stores has been forever hammered by the availability of a glut of free software. Don't blame F2P for that; F2P is the sensible reaction to a marketplace where distribution costs have fallen to zero and prices have rapidly followed, but the fact remains that Nintendo faces a tough challenge if it wants to sell premium-priced software in an ecosystem increasingly focused on free downloads.
Ultimately, I think that Nintendo will probably stick to its guns and avoid third-party publishing for as long as it possibly can, precisely because of that Catch-22. Its management would undoubtedly like to put Nintendo games on smartphones right now - they're traditionalists, no doubt, but they're not stupid or unaware of what's happening in the world. Yet even while some companies are making a fortune from the App Store, Google Play and their ilk, Nintendo is quite right to be incredibly wary of the economic factors at work in these marketplaces. Nintendo's existing markets may be niche, but they're reliable niches that pay good money for high-quality software - and if you're safeguarding the greatest treasure trove of IP in the games business, there are times when playing it safe makes a whole lot of sense.

Seattle federal judge dismisses the case against Nintendo
[h=3]Nintendo of America[/h]
A federal judge in Seattle has dismissed a patent-infringement lawsuit brought against Nintendo of America by Triton. Triton had alleged that the Wii MotionPlus accessory violated U.S. Patent No. 5,181,181 owned by the company, filing its suit in Texas. Nintendo later won a transfer of the case to Seattle, where Judge Richard A. Jones rejected the case after hearing Triton's legal arguments.
"We feel vindicated by the court's ruling," said Nintendo of America deputy general counsel Richard Medway. "Nintendo's track record demonstrates that we vigorously defend patent lawsuits, like the Triton lawsuit, when we believe that we have not infringed another party's patent. Consumers respect Nintendo because we develop unique and innovative products, and because we respect the intellectual property rights of others."
Triton's patent involved a mouse (pictured) which could sense six degrees of motion in three dimensions. The device used three accelerometers to sense movement.

As planned, Nintendo is today discontinuing several of the outgoing Wii's online services.
The discontinued services will render the following Wii home menu 'Channels' obsolete:
- Nintendo Channel
- News Channel
- Forecast Channel
- Everybody Votes Channel
- Mii Contest Channel
- Data exchange with Wii Friends
The Data Exchange with Friends closure will affect the "exchange of Wii messages on the Wii Message Board, exchange of Mii characters on the Mii Channel and message/data exchange within some games will be disabled".
This comes seven months after the launch of the Wii's successor, Wii U, in November 2012.
The Wii U Shop channel will remain online for the forceable future, and can be accessed directly via the Wii U system while in its backwards-compatible Wii mode.
Nintendo said within its original announcement, "We at Nintendo sincerely thank you for your continued patronage of our company's products. We apologise to those of you currently using these services."

Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has admitted that The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has presented a challenge in keeping fans of the original happy while avoiding alienating newcomers.
During an interview with Edge, Zelda producer Elji Aonuma admitted there is concern when making a sequel to A Link to the Past with regards to fan expectations.
"Fans of the original game have a lot of fond memories," he says, "and when we announced this sequel I know that some were dubious about the idea of us adding to that game's lore."
He explains that the challenge lies in finding out exactly what it was in the original that people loved, and respecting it.
"It's been a big point of discussion among the staff - how much fan service to give without blowing it. We've been thinking about how to make the new one in a way that will excite the fans without alienating people who haven't played the original. We're paying close attention to that."
When asked about returning to the world of A Link to the Past some 22 years later, Aonuma said, "it was the first game I played that opened up my eyes to all the things a videogame can be. It's the game that inspired me to make games.
"When the 3DS came along, I thought it would be cool to make a 2D-style Zelda game that you could play in 3D - it seemed like a challenge. I thought it might be interesting to combine a side-on view with the top-down view of A Link To The Past. So we arrived at the idea of making a new game set in the existing world of A Link To The Past."
Aonuma says that, above all else, "the main thing I wanted to get back to was the jaunty tempo of a top-down game. In a 2D Zelda game, you can zip through the stage at a faster pace, which brings the action to the fore. I wanted players to revisit that style."
A Link to the Past 2 was renamed A Link Between Worlds during this year's E3, with a new trailer, and a confirmed release for November.
During an interview earlier this month, Anouma tells us to expect a new art style and necessary changes when Zelda hits the Wii U.

CQuake is a port of Quake for the Nintendo DS. The project has seen many revisions that have not only brought speed increases and MP3 support, but also a DSi-Mode release. The developer, elhobbs, is at it again and this release adds local multiplayer to the mix. If you happen to test out this release, please be so kind as to post your findings in the on-going discussion thread.
Setup:
Setting up CQuake requires a bit more than what is included with the download. Start by grabbing the 7/27/08 package and then extract it. Place the NIFI cnquake.nds and the cquake.ini file (found in the 7/27/08 archive) into ROOT. Make a folder in ROOT called ID1 and place the Quake PAK files into it (PAK0.PAK [74E3B084], PAK1.PAK [2E803216]). Into the ID1 directory also place the autoexec.cfg, config.cfg, and progs.dat files which came in the 7/27/08 archive.
Custom Config File
I’ve set up a custom config file that uses all button controls (Doom style). If you want to use these settings just edit the config file and paste in the following values below.
Code:
bind DSSELECT "toggleconsole"
bind DSSTART "togglemenu"
bind "DSUP" "+forward"
bind "DSDOWN" "+back"
bind "DSLEFT" "+left"
bind "DSRIGHT" "+right"
bind "DSTAP" "+jump"
bind "DSB" "+lookdown"
bind "DSA" "+attack"
bind "DSL" "+moveleft"
bind "DSR" "+moveright"
bind "DSX" "+lookup"
bind "DSY" "impulse 10" D-Pad: walks forward and backwards, looks left and right
Shoulder buttons: strafe left and right
Double tapping the touch screen: jumps
X: look up
B: look down
Y: change weapon
A: fire

Nintendo released another 3DS firmware update, which updates the 3DS system software to version 6.1.0.x. I can confirm that this update didn't block the R4i3DS (r4ids.cn) with the latest patch from 6.0.0.x. Not 100% sure if there are any newly blocked carts since 6.0.0.x , but it's unlikely since it's a really tiny update. I will updated with this update's changelog once it's out.
Update : DSTwo cart is confirmed working fine with the update
Changelog : Version 6.1.0-11U available via wireless Internet connection includes the following improvements:
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience.

Gearboy Git (2013/06/27) is compiled. Gearboy is a Nintendo Game Boy emulator written in C++. The emulator is focused on readability of source code, but nevertheless it has good compatibility. A lot of effort has gone into this in order to follow OOP and keep it as simple as possible.
Gearboy Features:
- Accurate CPU emulation, passes cpu_instrs.gb from blargg's tests.
- Accurate instruction timing, passes instr_timing.gb from blargg's tests.
- Memory Bank Controllers (MBC1, MBC2, MBC3 with RTC, MBC5) and ROM + RAM cartridges.
- Accurate LCD controller emulation. Background, window and sprites, with correct timings and priorities.
- Mix frames: Mimics the LCD ghosting effect seen in the original Game Boy.
- Sound emulation using SDL Audio and Gb_Snd_Emu library.
- Basic Game Boy Color support.
- Integrated disassembler. It can dump the full disassembled memory to a text file or access it in real time.
- Compressed rom support (ZIP deflate).
- Multi platform. Compiles and runs on Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and iOS.
- Uses OpenGL for rendering on all platforms.

Fceux SVN r2968 is compiled.
Fceux SVN changelog:
r2968
sdl: stub off functions that need to be rewritten for SDL2 sdl: sdl2 now compiles (albeit does not work whatsoever at this point) (TODO: write InitVideo for SDL2)
