The importing of the infamous R4 cart - or similar flash cart devices for DS - has been outlawed in Japan.
The R4 cart and those like it are read-writable cartridges for the DS which allow users to download and play pirate games.Nintendo has been locked in legal battles globally over the distribution and sale of such devices, as it made efforts to curb rampant piracy on its first dual-screen handheld.
The Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (translations via Kotaku) has announced it is now illegal to import such devices into Japan, where their sale has already been banned.
Game copying devices like the R4 were ruled illegal in France late last year, bringing the country in line with other European territories including the Netherlands, UK, Germany, Italy and Belgium, Nintendo said at the time.

[Guillermo Amaral's] NES controller was in great shape. Well, except for the fact that it didn’t work. Upon closer inspection it seems the shift register — which is the only IC on these ancient peripherals — had given up the ghost. But he made it usable again by making the NES controller into a MaKey MaKey shield.
You should remember the MaKey MaKey. It’s a little board that lets you create controllers out of just about anything — bananas being one of the more popular examples. All he needed to do is wire up the controller’s buttons to the board. For the task he chose to use extra long pin headers. To find the location for holes in the case he applied red ink to the top of each pin, then held the PCB up to the outside of the controller. After drilling at each red mark he glued the pin headers in place and started in on the controller’s original circuit board. Once all the point-to-point wiring was done he had a working controller. See for yourself in the clip after the jump.

Nintendo’s Wii U Gamepad apparently has a significant bit of added functionality that we’ve not heard about – it can display in 3D.
Oddly, though, we’re not talking 3DS-style glasses-free 3D. Instead, IMGMR reports that green and magenta glasses from Inficolor are need to take advantage of the experience.
It can be activated at any time during gameplay via the options menu.
Furthermore, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III is compatible.
There is an immediate question that presents itself, however, and it’s one that perhaps explains why Nintendo hasn’t publicised the console’s 3D functionality.
And it is this – people have already asked questions of the need to switch your focus from your controller’s screen and the TV screen. Can you imagine doing that when one is in 3D and the other is not? And when you have to remove or put on your glasses each time?
Of course, many titles – including Assassin’s Creed III – allow Gamepad-only gaming, removing the need for users to flick between two displays.

Paper Mario is a roleplaying game in the theatrical sense. It sees series mainstays letting their hair down and ditching their standard routines for fourth-wall-smashing japery. Luigi’s cowardice and Bowser’s toothless buffoonery smack of pantomime, an artificiality cheekily winked at in battles framed as theatrical shows. Sticker Star is the fullest realisation of the idea to date, a world of origami temples, foil sticker oceans and interfaces crafted from corrugated card.

Look, we're not your parents. We're not going to sit here, high upon our internet throne and tell you what you can and can't do. Even if we did discourage you from putting yourself in a potentially trample-prone environment, you'd still do it for dat savings.
Take Target's Black Friday deals, for example. These scanned pages reveal PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 bundles with two games each for $200, as well as a free copy of Just Dance Kids 2 with the purchase of a $120 Wii bundle. Vita and 3DS bundles (with one game each) are available for $200 and $150 respectively, while PS3, 360 and Wii controllers cost $40 and a bonus $20 giftcard is included in the purchase of Halo 4, Assassin's Creed 3 or Forza Horizon. You can even get Adele's irrelevant first album for $5, or one of those cool magnadoodle thingies for half a sawbuck.
Whatever you do on Black Friday, just, you know, be safe. You're our precious little darling babies and we don't want anything to happen to you.

Team Ninja has always done better on the rebound, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge is a testament to this fact. The technical excellence of the 2004'sNinja Gaiden was one-upped in Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Ninja Gaiden 2 was improved dramatically in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. Razor's Edge carries that trend forward into the series' latest entry, with surprising results. It's one thing to turn a great game into an even better one, but to turn a once-terrible gameinto a launch lineup highlight? Impossible!
Apparently not. Team Ninja cuts liberally from Ninja Gaiden 3 in Razor's Edge, stripping away everything from the obnoxious "steel on bone" QTE-style button mashery to the multitude of joy-killing sequences in which players guide a stumbling, curse-afflicted Ryu through neutered enemy encounters. Even the questionable presentation is erased, exemplified by an early moment that forces Ryu, and thus the player, to murder a man in cold blood as he pleads for his life. This insufferable moment has been excised from Razor's Edge, and for that we can all be thankful.

"What is Wii U?" asks a new series of TV adverts for Wii U launch title Nintendo Land. "Talk or fail," reads the cryptic reply. Each video showcases a multiplayer mini-game from Nintendo Land, with a group of enthusiastic young friends playing along in their living room.Other answers to "What is Wii U?" include "I can see you, but you can't see me" for the stealthy Luigi's Ghost Mansion mini-game and "I can do things that I couldn't before" for Legend of Zelda: Battle Quest. It's a little disconcerting that, nine days before the console launches in the UK, Nintendo is still having to explain what the Wii U is.The ad campaign reflects the ongoing difficulties of attracting potential customers to the Wii U's tablet controller concept - at least compared to the instant allure of holding a Wii Remote in hand and swinging a virtual golf club in Wii Sports. It follows Nintendo's first Wii U TV advert where the company made sure viewers knew it was a new console.

November 22nd, 2012, 01:14 Posted By: wraggster
Over the last six years, developers have sought to find balance in their cross-platform development, weighing up the pluses and minuses of the PS3 and Xbox 360 and looking to strike a good balance between the two. Microsoft concentrates on a stronger graphics core while Sony has put its efforts into an advanced CPU, but on a general level most games these days work out pretty well overall on both machines. With Wii U, the balance in processing power shifts again: Nintendo has beefed up the graphics core beyond current-gen standards, but all the evidence points to a weaker CPU.Bearing in mind the decisions the platform holder has made with the design of the Wii U, can the hardware handle Unreal Engine 3 - a middleware designed with the older HD console trade-offs very much in mind? There've been a number of alarming screenshots and video of the Wii U version of UE3 Batman: Arkham City, showing clear and obvious graphical drawbacks on the new Nintendo system - most notably low resolution shadowmaps. Numerous theories are circulating on why this may be an issue but the most plausible explanation involves the way Wii U memory is set-up. There's an enviable 1GB of RAM available for games applications (up from the 512MB found in the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3), but it's significantly slower than the throughput of the GDDR3 found in the Microsoft console. To mitigate the issue, the Wii U has 32MB of ultra-fast onboard eDRAM integrated into the AMD graphics core and the new hardware almost certainly renders out directly from that. We're not yet clear on how texture fetching works on the new console but conceivably the challenge becomes a matter of importing assets from the main RAM into the GPU eDRAM in an orderly fashion and keeping them contained in that space before exporting the whole framebuffer to the video output. Shadowmaps take up a lot of space which may explain why they have apparently been downscaled on Arkham City. This ties in with why we've yet to see any Wii U title with multi-sampling anti-aliasing - each pass would take up valuable eDRAM [Update: We spoke too soon here as Black Ops 2 appears to feature it]. So where does all of this leave Mass Effect 3 - one of the most visually complex of Unreal Engine 3 titles?Let's answer that immediately by comparing Mass Effect 3 on Wii U with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game in a brace of video head-to-heads, backed by a triple-format gallery.

November 22nd, 2012, 01:12 Posted By: wraggster
Nintendo has responded to us concerning how the dashboard messages are selected. This was its reply:"The most discussed topics in Miiverse - e.g. specific games, applications, boss battles, user accomplishments, etc. - will be displayed on Wii U's main menu. Before that content is posted to the main menu it will be screened and filtered to ensure that it is appropriate for everyone."Original story:Miiverse is essentially a series of message boards. You can post a message - either a drawing or text limited to 100 characters - in a "community" (i.e. thread) devoted to a particular game. You'll then be notified anytime someone responds to it.My first sample post was in the ZombiU community where I wrote, "How y'all liking Zombi U so far? Brits love it. Americans not so much. Wonder if it's a cultural thing" (Yes, I left off a period. 100 characters isn't much!)Some person quickly gave my post a "Yeah," Miiverse parlance for a Facebook "like."A few other people responded saying that they dug the game. Their responses popped up under my "Notifications" tab on the side, letting me know that people had either given my post a "Yeah" or written a response. There's also an "Activity Feed," that lets you see what your friends are posting. In this regard, it's very much like Facebook. That's me in the corner... losing my religion!
Unlike Facebook, you can report spoilers and violations. I tested this on a poor friend of mine by saying his message had spoilers. You're then asked to provide a reason the post is spoilery or inappropriate and moderators will decide if it fits the bill. If it's simply spoilers, it will stay up, but become invisible under a spoiler warning that needs to be clicked on to read (players can put spoiler warning on their own messages, too). Regarding my friend's message, all he said was "Flying clouds," but I still got it spoiler-alerted. (Sorry, Jarrett!)Offensive messages, however, get taken down. To test this, I tried posting a message that read, "This game f***ing rules" in the New Super Mario Bros U community and it was removed in less than five minutes.Curiously, what people are saying about a game pops up momentarily on one's dashboard. Simply press the power button and you'll come to a screen showing several different titles with tons of Miis mingling in the background. Random messages pop up giving a cursory overview of what people are saying or drawing right now. Pics of Link and Pikachu are common, as are messages asking if certain games are any good. What I don't totally understand yet is how Nintendo prevents the more offensive messages from reaching this state. Is someone approving all of these before they reach dashboard circulation? I've asked Nintendo for comment and will update as I find out more.Elsewhere, friends can send each other direct messages through the Miiverse, which can be accessed during a game by hitting the home menu, similar to the Xbox 360 dashboard (though the Miiverse takes an extra few frustrating seconds to boot up). Thankfully, the GamePad's virtual keyboard is a godsend compared to entering text with an Xbox 360 controller or Dualshock.

Welcome one and all to the second episode of Head 2 Head, our new video show where Tamoor (me!) and Rob Crossley (the guy on the right) argue about hot-button topics in the world of video games.
In the first episode we clashed on Facebook games, which I continue to believe are awful and a constant nuisance. Bah Humbug! This week we're butting heads over the Wii U's launch line-up. I argue that it's Nintendo's best ever, Rob disagrees.
The victor of the argument will be selected by you. Simply watch the video below and then cast your vote in the box.
We encourage you to give us your opinions on the feature or the topic, and suggest next week's point of discussion in the comments section below. Enjoy!

Sega is pulling Space Harrier off the archive shelves for a revival on 3DS.
That's according to a report out of Japan (viaTiny Cartridge), which reports that the 3DS-bound game will be a port of the arcade original with added support for the 3DS's widescreen profile and obligatory stereoscopic 3D.The report also claims that this will be the first of multiple classic 3DS remakes that Sega plans to release on the portable, as the home of Sonic seemingly seeks to pick up the '3D Classics' line that Nintendo appears to have abandoned.
There was no word on a release date.

Nintendo might be selling Wii U hardware at a loss, but each sale should still result in a profit for the platform holder.
“The Wii U hardware will have a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits early after the launch because rather than determining a price based on its manufacturing cost, we selected one that consumers would consider to be reasonable.” Iwata told investors in October.
“In this first half of the term before the launch of the Wii U, we were not able to make a profit on software for the system while we had to book a loss on the hardware, which is currently in production and will be sold below cost.”
However, speaking to Mercury News yesterday Nintendo America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has claimed that all it takes is for one game to be purchased with each console for Nintendo to make its money back.
“The business model doesn't change dramatically, in that as soon as we get the consumer to buy one piece of software, then that entire transaction becomes profit positive,” he insisted.
“In the end, the business model is still to drive the install base of hardware, and then to drive a strong tie ratio with all of the other software and experiences for the consumer. And if we're able to do that, then we will create significant profit for the company.”
All of which suggests the console’s US RRP of $300 for the Basic and $350 for the Premium is very, very close to Nintendo’s cost price.

Can Wii U replicate the record-breaking success of the Wii?
That’s the question gripping the industry at the moment following the console’s North American launch at the weekend and the upcoming UK arrival next week.
But there’s certainly no doubt from 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann who in an interview with MCV has expressed his unwavering belief in the power of Nintendo.
“Nintendo always impresses and surprises me,” he said. “The team there has so much knowledge built up over many, many years. Nintendo always finds its crowd.
“There have been people doubting the Wii U because they don’t really understand it. I wasn’t sure about the Wii and I was proved wrong, proved wrong by my own people, which I like the most because we sold a lot of Carnival Games. I believe the Wii U offers something special and we will be surprised how consumers will get attached.
“There’s nothing in my body, not a single piece, doubting that the Wii U will be successful.”
The full interview with Hartmann can be read in this week’s issue of MCV that will arrive both in mailboxes and online tomorrow.

The developer of Metro: Last Light has lashed out at the technical innards of Nintendo’s Wii U.
“Wii U has a horrible, slow CPU,” 4A Games’ chief technical officer Oles Shishkovtsov told NowGamer, with colleague Huw Beyon adding: “We had an early look at it, we thought we could probably do it, but in terms of the impact we would make on the overall quality of the game – potentially to its detriment – we just figured it wasn’t worth pursuing at this time.
“It’s something we might return to. I really couldn’t make any promises, though. We had an initial look at the Wii U, but given the size of the team and compared to where we were last time, just developing for the PS3 is a significant addition.”
However, it’s far too early to draw any meaningful conclusions.
Launch and early cycle games on any new platforms soon become outdated as developers get to grips with unfamiliar hardware. Just compare the visuals of, say, Black Ops II and Call of Duty 2 for example.
Add to this that reports from elsewhere don’t tie-in with 4A Games’ assessment. Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, for instance, seems to be more or less comparable with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, and even arguably superior to the latter.
Note too that Last Night comes with some pretty serious hardware requirements on PC.

The launch issue includes a guide to Wii U and 3DS gaming, along with a Wii U buyers’ guide and reviews of the first wave of Wii U games. It also introduces a new section that focuses on the console’s social network, Miiverse. And if that weren’t enough to tempt you, you’ll also get two Wii U drinks coasters – which is a much less expensive alternative to using your ZombiU and NSMBU discs.

With the North American launch of the Wii U out of the way, there's no looking back for Nintendo. In an interview with GameSpot conducted hours before the new system's debut, Nintendo of America director of product marketing Bill Trinen confirmed that the company has stopped working on games for the original Wii.
When asked if Nintendo had any internally developed Wii games in the pipeline, Trinen answered simply, "No, there are not right now."
If the Wii really has been put to sleep, Kirby's Dream Collection serves as an appropriate final release from Nintendo of America. The 20th anniversary compilation of Kirby games debuted in September. The following month, Nintendocut the price of the console from $149 to $129.
The Wii has been Nintendo's most successful home console to date. As of September 30, it had sold more than 97 million systems worldwide since its 2006 debut. The company's next-best selling console is the original Famicom/Nintendo Entertainment System, which tallied nearly 62 million systems sold.

Between the 3DS and the 3DS XL, Nintendo has sold nearly 6 million handhelds in the United States since the system's March 2011 debut. The company revealed the updated figure in an announcement for a new Super Mario 3D Land 3DS hardware bundle set to hit store shelves this Friday.
While the company didn't give updated information on the rest of the world, it did release figures through September 30 in its last quarterly financial report. Worldwide, Nintendo has sold 22.19 million 3DS systems (2.1 million of which were 3DS XL models). Japan has accounted for 7.94 million 3DS systems, the Americas have combined for 7.38 million, and the rest of the world was credited with buying the remaining 6.88 million.
Nintendo also expects 3DS sales to accelerate significantly through the holidays. The company is forecasting sales of 17.5 million 3DS systems for the fiscal year ending March 30, 2013. By the end of its fiscal first half, it had sold 5.06 million units, less than one third of that forecast.
