Even though Sony's PSP has kind of become the least-favorite child of the portable gaming community, hardware sales between it and the Nintendo DS have stayed pretty much neck and neck. In 2005, the PSP was able to lurch ahead of the DS, but the tables are turning in 2006 and Sony's multimedia device is slipping behind Nintendo's touch-friendly wonder. As a result, a recent report from technology analyst In-Stat predicts Sony will cut the price of its handheld this holiday season.
The report also has a few things to say about the Game Boy Advance; namely that 2007 will be the last year the most successful system of all time is manufactured. (The Game Boy, in all its manifestations, has sold more than 67 gazoombillion units since its introduction in 1989.)
Also noted are the demise of the Gizmondo, Nokia N-Gage, and Tapwave Zodiac over the past year, leaving only the DS and PSP in a bloody battle for the hearts and minds of gamers on the go.

Another update from the coder behind the C&C Clone for DS:
Support for big maps in the editor is just about in a practical state now, not particularly user friendly in many places but usable. I've saved out my first 'big' map and now I'm ready to load it into the game. As these things often do it didn't work first time, but I'm sure a little time spent in the debugger will tell me why. I have some screen shots of the editor in action that I will post soon. Not as exciting as the game, but a little teaser anyway.

Mario's birthday is this month, and to celebrate the event Nintendo is releasing two DS games featuring the tubby little plumber. The first is Mario Hoops 3-on-3, a DS game which lets you use the stylus to pull off special passes and different dribble moves. You can expect unlockable characters and courts, as well as plenty of stars and turtle shells.
The second game is Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis. This sequel features the first return of Pauline, the original heroine from the first Donkey Kong. It's up to a group of mini Mario toys to save her from the kidnap-happy ape. The game also allows you to design your own levels and share them online. Mario Hoops 3-on-3 is due out on September 13, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis is scheduled for release on September 27.

DrDark posted a load of Wii and DS News he found in the latest issue of NGamer:
Confirmation on Spore: “Release: Spring 2007″
Plus: “EA have confirmed that link-up play with the DS is on the cards, so you can deform your species on the fly.”
“Everything you need to know for the impending launch of the mighty Wii”.
Under the section on ‘DS Connectivity’, they say “EA’s spore is one upcoming title that will allow you to transfer data from little console to big in a flash.”
—–
Sensor bar is “50% smaller”, “little bigger than a couple of pencils glued together.”
—–
Wii-mote’s 6kb of internal memory “personalises your remote - potentially storing things like sensitivity, y-axis settings for FPSs, and even scores and saves.”
—–
Wii-mote runs on two AA batteries, offering around 60 hours of gameplay. That amount’s reduced to half (around 30 hours) if using the sensor bar though.
—–
[Talking about SD cards] “these tiny cards can be used to store game saves and virtual console games, but Digital Right Management features mean you can’t play your games on someone else’s Wii.”

This little detail was deliberately removed. Had to be. Because going way back to 2005, it was mentioned in the official release, of which every detail continues to be reiterated in updated official Nintendo Wii spec sheets -- minus the DVD-playback functionality bit, that is.
Observe exhibit A: 2005 Wii hardware breakdown WITH DVD-playback functionality mention
Now see exhibit B: Updated Nintendo Wii hardware breakdown from Nintendo. Pretty much all the same info and even wording here, but the DVD-playback stuff has been removed.
Like the headline indicates, I haven't really researched the subject beyond my initial paranoid theory and connected speculation. It could very well be that DVD-playback for Wii is not something that Nintendo is interested in promoting .
Lets hope Wii has got DVD playback, itll be a big downer if not

Infendo reports on IGN's Matt Casamassina comment that the upcoming Super Paper Mario will "be headed to Wii and not GameCube." Nintendo's Official web page for Super Paper Mario gives no indication of the change, pinpointing a October 9, 2006 release date.
Another rumor at Go Nintendo says Lego Star Wars 2 may be cancelled, after a UK reader says his Amazon UK pre-order was cancelled. He received the following response: "This item has now been cancelled from your order and we can confirm that you have not been charged for it." LucasArts's Online Store still lists the GameCube for $39.99. Not too sure about this one.
Is Nintendo punching more holes in the sinking GameCube, or is the anticipation of the Wii contributing to Nintendo fans killing it off?
We posted already that SuccessHK has the new Star Wars game

New preorder from Success HK

For the NDS entry in the series, Marvelous is bringing you back to Forget-Me-Not Vaoley, the world of the GameCube Harvest Moon: Wonderful Life game, while retaining the basic gameplay of the GBA titles. You once again play as a boy who's taken over a farm. As you work on your farm, you'll find yourself interacting with other members of your community. The NDS's twin screens are put to full use in Harvest Moon DS. During gameplay sequences, the top screen displays the action while the bottom screen displays the menu screen and comments and hints from helpful sprite characters. Conversation sequences also make use of the twin screens. The overhead action remains on the top screen, with the bottom screen showing the text for the conversation and large shots of the people to whom you're speaking.

Nintendo has reaffirmed its commitment to launching its Wii console this year in the UK, following Sony's shock announcement yesterday that the European PS3 launch is delayed until 2007.
"Wii is still heading for a Q4 release, as we've always stated. The launch is on track," Nintendo's UK representative has assured us, soothing our worries that Wii could mirror Sony's failure to provide UK gamers with PS3 this November.
"Nintendo plans to ship six million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on 31 March 2007," we're told, meaning Sony will be lagging dramatically behind, even before the first PS3 is sold.
With Nintendo throwing a Wii party in little more than a week, we should finally be able to put your minds at rest with the official UK launch date - so don't go anywhere else.

The excitement and hype surrounding a console launch is like chum for peripheral makers. In addition to store-built bundles, the first few months of a console are prime-time feeding grounds to earn a few extra bucks on early hype.
The Wii is heading into stores sometime later this year (details of the system's launch date and price are expected this month), and some new accessories for the console have been listed on the Web sites of EB Games and GameStop.
Unfortunately, most are of the vanilla variety, with travel bags and memory cards making up the bulk of the lot. However, it does give gamers a possible look at what various items will cost.
The most interesting item in the bunch is the Wii Controller Glove, which retails for $9.99. There's no product description, but given the focus on the Wii's controller, it's likely a protective sheath for the Wii-mote. Also listed without a description is a Wii Storage & Protection 1.0GB Kit for $69.99. Filed under the category "Storage & Travel" and carrying the "1.0GB" in its title, one would presume the product is some form of hybrid carrying case and memory card--or simply just a bundle featuring both.
Speaking of memory cards, SanDisk has some Wii-branded SD cards for the console, in both 512MB and 1GB sizes. They'll retail at $39.99 and $59.99, respectively. By comparison, memory units for the Xbox 360 are available in 64MB and 256MB capacities and retail for $39.99 and $59.99, respectively.
Also listed is a Wii Game Wallet for $9.99, a Wii Sling Bag for $29.99, and a Wii G-Pak Travel Case for $29.99. For what it's worth, all items have ship dates of November 1. However, online retailers typically must give items with tentative releases solid dates for data-entry purposes.

While Sony has revised its shipment figures for the launch of the PlayStation 3, Nintendo of America has reiterated its intention to ship six million units of its Wii console.
"Wii is on track to ship in Q4. Nintendo plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007," said NoA in an official statement.
Although definite launch details have not yet been forthcoming, Nintendo has arranged press events next week to discuss the finer points of the Wii launch, with a solid price and date expected to be announced.
Regarding Sony’s recent troubles in Europe, where the launch of the PlayStation 3 has been delayed until March 2007, a spokesperson for Nintendo Europe offered, "We do not comment on other company’s plans or announcements."

Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi sounds like he's changed his mind about bringing the famous series to Nintendo Wii, despite complaining earlier this year that you'd be knackered inside five minutes if you tried to swing a whip around with the remote.
Speaking to the Nintendo Europe website, Igarashi admitted the DS was his focus at the moment, but added that "of course we would like to think of something interesting and pleasant for Wii."
"I have some ideas for Castlevania for Wii," he added. Whhhu-KSSHHH!
He also did a lot of talking about Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, the DS game he's working on at the moment, and in particular referred to its wireless gaming elements - both online and off.
Last time he spoke about Wi-Fi stuff, including Wi-Fi Connection internet play, Igarashi joked that he hadn't actually started work on it, but now it sounds like things are a bit further along. "It's almost 100% confirmed," he says.
"Not only Wi-Fi Connection but also local wireless. We have two new elements: the items that the character has obtained can be exchanged with other users, and co-operation play with another player can be available to clear the difficult areas such as Boss Rushes."
"Due to the restriction of Wi-Fi Connection there are more elements available in local wireless. The biggest difference [between Wi-Fi and local wireless] is in the co-operative play mode. We have one co-op stage available in the Wi-Fi mode and several levels on local wireless mode."
It'll be possible to copy items to other users wirelessly, he says, although only the other player will lose money on the item as it's not an actual trade system. However, it will be possible to sell weapons online though to earn "secret points" for buying new items.
Sounds good - and Portrait of Ruin looked ace at Games Convention too. If it's anything near the quality of Dawn of Sorrow, the first DS game, you can expect big things when it arrives in November.

Despite being considered the ray of hope on the bleak Gamecube horizon following its shock announcement at this year's E3, rumours now abound that Super Paper Mario is to jump ship from the sinking console to the shiny new Wii.
The news comes from Editor-in-Chief of the IGN Wii-channel, Matt Casamassina, who, citing mysterious insider knowledge, states fairly explicitly that "Paper Mario will be headed to Wii and not GameCube".
With the moustachioed one going AWOL from Nintendo's Japanese release schedules, along with the reappearance of that other Nintendo regular in Zelda: Twilight Princess on the new console, it would appear that such speculation is not entirely unfounded.
As yet no official statement has been made nor any information on how the game will make use of the shift to the wavy controller.

NDS 3D World Toolset

After having a bash at creating a 2D game for the NDS (Finger Monkey and Inverto Goose) I decided to have a try at a 3D game.
I had a look at "NDS World Studio" which is a very good program, but as I like to program games in C++ and use OOP it didn’t meet my needs.
I decided to create my own model exporter. The exporter features:
- Exports each model as a c++ class for easy implementation into a game
- Supports multiple textures
- Bounding Box data for collisions

After getting this initial exporter running and creating a 3D game engine to load them I found it was a pain to place objects to create a good looking 3D world.
I developed the exporter further into a Map Creation tool, which features:
- Load in X-Files
- Displays models in both free and top down views
- Create large worlds quickly and easily
- Setup collision costs and object types
- AABB data generated
- All code needed to create a 3d world is exported, just a bit of copy and pasting into the NDS 3d engine.
- creates bat files for use with Delfares texture exporter, which works really well

The features of the 3D engine are:
- 3D Models created as C++ Classes for easy OOP implementation
- 3D object instancing – less NDS memory used
- AABB (axis aligned bounding box) collisions
- Collision costs – different cost result in different actions
- Simple Car Physics
- Billboards
- Follow and Overhead camera
Anyway after creating this toolset and 3D engine I started work on my game,
But recently I got a job programming computer games so no longer have the time to continue this.
I hadn't initially planned to release any of this apart from the final game, but then decided that someone else might find it useful,
So below you will find a user guide, game source code and 3D engine source code.
Read the User Guide for information on how to setup, run and use.

Heres an excerpt:
Millions of gamers have grown up hating Tingle, Link's good-for-nothing side kick who loves money and maps. But calls for the death of this character were replied with, shockers, Nintendo awarding him his very on DS game. So would the greedy pest pull through and be part of a Nintendo classic, or was turning a universally hated character into a gaming star a bad idea?
It shouldn't come as a surprise given that it's a Nintendo game and all, but with Tingle RPG (fully titled, in Japan, Mogitate Tingle no Bara Iro Rupee Land), Nintendo seems to have once again worked its magic. Tingle's first appearance as a main character is such a unique title that I was immediately reminded of the genre bustin' Nintendo did when it put Wario in a mini game collection a few years back.
Tingle RPG explains the origins of the Tingle character. One day, the 35-year-old nameless main character is awakened by the voice of the mysterious Grandfather Rupee. He learns that to get to the heaven of "Rupee Land," he must feed rupees to a spring near his house. As rupees are fed to it, a tower will grow from beneath the spring, leading to Rupee Land. Grandfather Rupee turns the main character into Tingle. From here on out, Tingle will have to collect rupees to feed to the growing tower.
