New from SuccessHK

The Empire strikes back in this sequel to the endearing Star Wars game made all of LEGOs. LEGO Star Wars II follows the Rebel Alliance's battle to dismantle the Galactic Empire and rebuild a galaxy in pieces. From Darth Vader's pursuit of Princess Leia aboard her blockade runner to a showdown on the reconstructed Death Star, the game includes even more of the family-friendly LEGO action. The sequel finally allows you to build with your LEGO blocks, as a new Free Play mode allows gamers to customize the vehicles for new ship designs, as well as Free Play all of the playable characters (over 100 in total) by mixing and matching body parts, forming the likes of "Stormbacca", "Chew Vader" and "Leia Wan Kenobi." Other additions include cool new character-specific attacks and maneuvers, Power Brick items, playable mini-kit vehicles, an improved two-player camera, a greater challenge for advanced players, and more.

When the big scare of hinge damage on a massive scale to shipments of DS Lites in America hit, we were all going over our units with a magnifying glass. We were all thankful that Nintendo was so kind as to offer free repairs for damaged handhelds. Turns out the issue might not only be Lite-exclusive.
During the latest podcast from VGM Daily, it's revealed that a DS Phat developed a rather large crack at the hinge. If you're one of the few who didn't trade up for their DS Lite and kept your old unit, you might want to go check at the bottom of that dusty old box out in the garage that currently houses your DS Phat and make sure it's without crack.

Mollusk posted this news:
Here comes the official update after a few useless betas
Main stuff you'll focus on :
- Animated gif and their new commands
- VBL functions
- Stylus additions
- No more compilation need on installation !
- PAGfx compatibilty and error fixes
Changelog :
New Stuff
---------
[Compilation] No longer requires install.bat
[VBL] Added a custom function code in the VBL : PA_VBLFunctionInit(your function) will execute, each and every frame, a given function... This can be used to make counters or have critical codes run at full speed when you're low on CPU time. Be aware that too CPU-expensive functions might slow down your program or hang the DS if run from the VBL !!! PA_VBLFunctionReset() can be used to stop the custom function. An example was added (Other/VBLFunction)
[2D/3D] Seperated the 2D init (still done by default in PA_Init). You can now use PA_Init2D to return to 2D mode after using 3D functions
[Gif] Gif speed now works, only tested on emu for now. Thanks to Shaun for the solution Removed PA_SetGifSpeed
[Gif] New commands available to change the gif speed while playing and pause it ! PA_GifAnimSpeed(float speed), PA_GifAnimStop, PA_GifAnimPause, and PA_GifAnimPlay. Check out the GifAnim example
[Demos] Added the Bunny demo to the demo folder. It shows how to use sprite frames and pixel-perfect stylus collision to create stupid minigames
Updated Stuff
-------------
[Stylus] Now includes Stylus.Downtime and Uptime, to know how long the stylus was held on the screen or off of it (check Input/Stylus2 example to see that in action)
[Stylus] Added Stylus.DblClick, may need more testing though, also in Stylus2 example
[DeSmuME] Reverted back to the old version, this one had 'Hickups'
[Giflib] Changed its compilation, saves 4kb
[Doc] Updated the doc
Things Fixed
------------
[Compilation] Fixed the 5 last warnings
[Examples] FAT example back, thanks Creebo
[PAGfx] Better declarations in all_gfx.h and .c, with #ifndef and CPP compatible stuff
[PAGfx] Now works correctly when you don't precise the Sprite/Bg mode (256colors, etc...) Will take the most common mode by default (fixes PAGfx.exe errors and PAGfx Frontend import function
[Draw] Draw functions fixed, thanks to PadrinatoR
I know sourceforge might take a few hours to update, so I put the installer and the zip on an ftp :

Lick has posted the first OFFICIAL Release of DSLive Weather for the Nintendo DS, heres the release info:
First Official Release that includes graphics. Aestus, that’s heat in Latin. I’m sure you guys agree that this release is hot!
Changes (from Tepidus release):
- Better layout current condition.
- One global server setting, so you don’t have to type that for each and every profile.
- Left and Right switches between profiles.
- Touching the information will switch between units (F/C, miles/km).
Installation Notes:
- Make sure to create a directory in the root, named “DSLiveWeather”. (If you’re upgrading from previous installations, remove the trailing exclamation icon (”!”) from the directoryname.)
- You must use the file ‘weather/fetch2.php’ from the server ‘lick.huuf.net’. Must.
- You might want to delete reports.b, because there has been a change in the way DSLW loads that file. Though you don’t -need- to do it.
Bugs
Please report any bugs that you find so I can remove them ASAP.

Patent news website Patent Arcade has unearthed a hillariously detailed patent that seems to describe some of the more middling features of the Star Fox series. Issued in 2001, the 23,000+ word document details important game features such as "a score-giving condition is detected according to a relation of the player object to another object." (read: shoot stuff for points) and "... a plurality of different courses through which a player can successively advance by successfully completing a current one of said plurality of courses" (read: a level select screen)
The patent seems to focus a lot of energy on unoriginal, pedestrian features such as location-specific hit-detection and allowing players to replay a level for a higher score. Are they really trying to claim ownership of such basic video gaming ideas, or is this legalese just boilerplate that gets filed as a matter of course? Either way, if Nintendo ever files a patent-infringement lawsuit against some game that "makes it possible to... advance to a same course (i.e. replay) even after clearing a course or scene difficult to manipulate," we'll be sure to cover it here.

VGM Fusion sat down with Andre Vu of Ubisoft recently to talk about the upcoming version of Far Cry for the Wii. Far Cry Vengeance is on schedule for a release during the Wii's "launch window," and will include new story elements, new characters and maps.
The bad news, I think, is that the game will use motion controls. They didn't find out what all of the controls would be, but managed to get three examples:
Quickly tilting the Nunchaku up will cause you to jump
Making a slashing motion with the Wiimote takes you into feral mode
Motioning the Wiimote forward will activate the sniper riffle
The developer said the game pushed the Wii to its limits, graphically and that it runs in 480p at 30fps. Unfortunately, there is no online multiplayer yet, just a split screen variety. Vu did say that the could always add online multiplayer as a patch through WiiConnect24. They also said they might make downloadable content available for the game.

The Wii-mote not only opens doors for endless types of new gameplay, but also a steady stream of Wii-mote peripherals. For example, this quote that comes via Go Nintendo:
Ubisoft's Japan-developed GT Pro Series—which may or may not be a Wii launch title, depending on where you get your information from—will come with an attachment of some sort that will make it a 'must-have'. We're guessing a clip-on steering wheel. Developed by the people behind the GT Advance series, the game will include over 80 licensed vehicles.

JimmyL posted this news:
I've decided to release the source code to Explosive Gas. I've been meaning to do this since the ndshb contest ended in early July, but always figured I'd wait until I had it more bug free and stable, but since it seems I'll never find the time to fix it up, I may as well release it as it was. Hopefully, some homebrew ds coders out there will benefit from some of the code in the package.
