We are in the golden age of portable video games. Nintendo’s DS Lite keeps delivering innovative new software, attracting an audience that didn’t previously have much interest in games. Sony’s PlayStation Portable has stumbled, but it’s still a solid alternative for players who want handheld versions of their favorite console games. And sooner or later, Microsoft is bound to come out with a portable Xbox.
Add in all the games that are available for cell phones and personal digital assistants, and you never have an excuse to be bored while waiting in line at the DMV. And we haven’t even mentioned the granddaddy of handheld game devices: Nintendo’s Game Boy.
Seventeen years after its introduction, the Game Boy is still hanging in there. Sure, it’s been through a lot of changes, as the chunky, black-and-white original has slimmed down into the credit-card-sized, color Game Boy Micro. But it’s outlasted three generations of home consoles and helped keep Nintendo afloat even as the company’s GameCube struggled.

For those curious about Madden NFL 07 on the Wii and how the controls (and graphics) will look, there's a new and fairly lengthy video up on YouTube that gives a good walkthrough of the basics.
If you weren't lucky enough to get your hands on a version at E3, handling the game was actually quite intuitive and fun. It even went so far as to make us want to actually buy and play Madden again.

It looks as though Sony will use a cut price slimline PlayStation 2 to lure away potential Wii buyers, as US lead Kaz Hirai fires a shot across Nintendo's budget-focused bows.
Speaking specifically of the Wii and the power/functionality trade-off it offers in an interview with CNET, Hirai said, "Some consumers will compare features or software offerings and decide that they may want to go with a different console. You also have to realize that we have a very strong, market-leading console called the PlayStation 2, which is at a very affordable price right now."
Of course, this is likely to be a case of pissing in the wind for investor's sake, mixed with a smattering of reality. Sony will shift a decent number of PlayStation 2 units this Christmas. They'll be about 60GBP in the US for instance - comedically cheap for a cracking little console on which you can play Gran Turismo all day long.
Hirai continued, "Consumers will also understand that if you buy a PlayStation 2 right now, and you make some software investments, when you feel it's right to move onto PlayStation 3, those software titles aren't going to go by the wayside. Consumers will take that into consideration. I don't think price is the only determining factor when consumers make a choice in looking at their console purchase decisions."
We would agree with Hirai 100% that the price is not the only consideration. The inclusion of an entirely new style of controller is also a huge lure, though his point that the slimline PlayStation 2 will be an absolute steal is totally valid.

Winning Eleven DS will ship in Japan on November 11, Konami's website proudly proclaims. And what's this? It would seem that it is to be made available bundled with a special edition DS Lite in glossy onyx, and adorned with the tactical scribblings of a master manager.
The Winning Eleven series, of course, rejoices in the name of Pro Evolution Soccer in the west, and as far as we are aware, '6' is scheduled for an autumn release in Europe. Whether we poor Eurotrash will be able to snap up the special version DS still remains to be seen. Believe it or not, in the SPOnG offices there are still those of us who have yet to acquire a bewitching DS Lite.
It's all rather exciting, this portable PES stuff, we're sure you agree.

With Xbox 360 comfortably sitting on shop shelves, PS3 and Wii are left duking it out in the ether in a rumour war of PR and pontification. Yesterday we reported the Jeux France claim that the next graphical Wii presentation will surpass anything we've seen so far. Today the mill grinds on, with the news that a Nintendo media event will apparently take place in London on September 15.
You may know that a similar event is slated for September 14 in America. Is there finally some sort of territorial equality that will see all corners of games-playing Earth tantalised evenly? And what can we expect at these putative press conferences? A Megaton demo of the kind alluded to yesterday?
We think it's unlikely that the Wii will pull eye-candy rabbits out of its plumber's hat. There's nothing wrong with the crisp graphics we've seen so far. Sneering detractors dub Wii the GameCube 1.5, but if the Resident Evil titles were anything to go by, then the little purple lunchbox barely fulfilled its potential anyway. Perhaps more likely (and probably more exciting) would be an announcement of release date and price point. Or maybe just more teasingly, the release of a different colour DS Lite. We'll have to wait and see, so watch this space.

Proving again the subjective nature of gaming, Star Fox Command for the DS receives mixed game reviews with a current Metacritic average of 80%. Commonly highlighted strengths include single-player mode, presentation, graphics and dogfighting, with dialog, multi-player mode, and its short length being marked as weaknesses. Here's what early reviewers are saying:
Gamespot - 75%: "The presentation in Star Fox Command is one of the highlights. The impressive 3D visuals do a lot to make the game more appealing. The ship designs look great, the game runs smoothly, and there are a number of different, good-looking environments to fly around in."
Yahoo! Games - 90%: "StarFox Command continues to prove that the DS is more than a trumped-up Game Boy... Combined with the fun dogfighting and smart stylus control, this is better action than we deserve in a portable."
Gamepro - 85%: "Unfortunately, there are some minor issues that keep Star Fox Command from becoming a truly spectacular title. The maps are small and cramped and the game is just too short."
1UP- 70%: "Where the developers really missed the boat was in multi-player. The standard combat arenas are all well and good, but that's pretty much all there is. None of the strategy elements that comprised the core of the single-player game are in multi-player..."
That's too bad: Talking animals flying in space ships had such potential of becoming a AAA title, not to take away from it's apparent decency. Animal stabs aside, what do the current game owners out there think?

An article on MTV News delves into the process of creating and testing gestures for the Wii version of Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (the one without hyper-realistic graphics) and highlights how videogame testing is affected by Nintendo's unique approach to gaming. Unlike traditional games that might pose challenging requirements such as pressing the A-button to jump or the X-button to attack, Wii games may ask players to perform more elaborate motions. The wide range of movement detected by the controller means that the gestures used in gameplay require a lot fine-tuning, lest your arm's attack thrust becomes misinterpreted and your character instead chooses to hug the mutant abomination attacking your party.
Associate designer on the project, Mike Chrzanowski, points out that the game initially started with over 20 different gestures but was eventually simplified to include only five. With players constantly shooting webbing and tossing patriotic shields about, it was vital that the game could successfully recognize and distinguish between the various gestures. Tasking testers with repeating various swipes and stabs, the Vicarious Visions team carefully monitored the motions that resulted and how different players interpreted and reacted to the on-screen instructions. After countless coding and tweaking, they claim to have constructed an interface that is 97 percent reliable. While Marvel: Ultimate Alliance doesn't make the most extensive use of the Wii's controls, it does illustrate how game testing and control mechanics need to be adapted for the platform.
It remains to be seen whether or not other developers will go through as much trouble as Vicarious Visions did to differentiate between specific arm motions and mindless flailing (there will likely be several games that count on the latter). More interesting is the recurring issue of shoehorning game actions into motion-sensitive controls. There's a fine line between taking advantage of a platform's capabilities and tacking on new mechanics. After all, is it really better that you twist your wrist in order to open a door as opposed to merely pressing a button?

When Final Fantasy III went on sale last week in Japan, Square Enix and Nintendo also sold a special FF III bundle, which included a copy of the game and a special Final Fantasy DS Lite. The US $200 bundle, needless to say, sold out quick. The bundle is available to RPG-crazy Japanese gamers—for a price. Used ones are turning up in Akihabara for almost US $500.

The factory has received Wii controller's purchasing order and its sample, but is still stucked in testing phrase. From feedbacks of testers, currently the Wiimote and nunchuck still have a lot of small issues, such as buttons aren't sensitive, hard to press 2 buttons together, and even no response occasionally, and the current sample is easy to get damaged, using the controller in normal situation will produce some noise, etc. Entering Sept, if the above hardware problems cannot be fixed, it will directly affect Wii's selling strategy.
Also, the factory has not received the Wii console from Nintendo yet, currently they are testing samples using a dedicated machine only for testing, which means after an up-to-standard sample is produced, it still needs to be sented back to Japan to be tested by Nintendo for the 2nd time. Wii controller uses bluetooth technology for real-time data transfer, and infrared for "space location"(space as in that Eistein(?)) guy Time-Space thingy), and the 2nd phrase of testing procedures maybe even tougher!

Sim City, the game which catapulted Will Wright to games industry megastardom, is coming to the Nintendo DS.
Which, if you think about, makes eminently good sense, as the DS's touch-screen is perfectly suited to constructing virtual towns building by building and road by road.
Although the prospect of having your own virtual world in the palm of your hand is a mouth-watering one, you'll have to exercise a bit of patience, as details are distinctly sketchy at this stage. Although EA has said that the game will arrive in "Winter 2006/2007" -- so it could, possibly, arrive in time for Christmas. And the game will be based on the PC title Sim City 3000.

Developer famed for jiggling virtual breasts embraces Wii. And there's a sick porno gag in there somewhere...
Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden developer Tecmo has revealed it's to "aggressively" support Nintendo's download service Virtual Console, according to a report on IGN.
Tecmo joins the likes of Sega and Hudson, who have already signed up to offer downloadable access to their game's via Virtual Console on Wii. Sadly, there's no further details on Tecmo's Virtual Console plans at this time, but we assume it will be dipping into its impressive back catalogue to deliver retro action.
It may turn out too of course that Tecmo will release new titles on the platform, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens. We reckon we'll hear more on all this at the Tokyo Game Show next month, but you can make your demands for Tecmo classics via our comments field below.

Everyone loves a spot of Sonic and, with the spiky one's latest adventure set to debut on Nintendo's Wii, we couldn't be happier to give you a sneak peek at what Sonic has in store courtesy of this latest movie.
Sporting its newly acquired moniker of Sonic and the Secret of the Rings, there's little point in us waffling on about how great or marvellous it is, when you can simply launch our spiffing media player and see it all for yourself. Sonic and the Secret of the Rings (no s******ing at the back there) is set for a debut next spring and we'll no doubt have more saucers full of secrets when it gets a further and more extended airing at the Tokyo Games Show.
But for the moment, sit back, relax and enjoy the sheer speed burn of Sonic's latest screen rush.

Capcom has cleared up mounting confusion about whether Resident Evil will, after all, be coming to the Nintendo Wii, by announcing that it is working on a specific version of the zombie-crunching franchise, rather than a port of Resident Evil 5, for Nintendo's remote-controlled sort-of-next-gen console.
In an interview with Pro-G, Ressie producer Jun Takeuchi seemed to suggest that Resident Evil wouldn't be coming to the Wii (cue much wailing and gnashing of teeth - and not just from the zombies). But fear not: it seems that gremlins got into the translation, and Takeuchi was specifically referring to Resident Evil 5.
Indeed, Capcom has confirmed that while it is developing Resident Evil 5 specifically for Xbox 360 and PS3 -- which means we can expect zombies with fiendishly clever AI and a tasty level of graphical detail -- the Wii will get its own, special version of Resident Evil which will be completely different to RE5. But which, presumably, will transform the Wii-mote into a head-popping shotgun or chainsaw, or whatever - the zombie-mashing possibilities are endless. Still hurrah for Ressie Wii! and we'll of course bring you more news as it shambles out of Capcom's lair.

Starfox Command Review
Awesome shooter for the Nintendo DS.
Suppliers
Lik Sang US$ 44.90 (~23.70 GBP)
Screenshots

Description
Star Fox returns to its roots with a blistering space shooter on the Nintendo DS! Lylat needs you! Hop into your Arwing fighter and fight through a unique branching storyline of missions, all rendered in gorgeous 3D. Draw up your battle plan! Star Fox DS brings a whole new strategic element to the series with a commander's view of the mission. Using the touch screen, draw routes you and your teammates will take, then battle the enemies you encounter as you take over bases and strategically advance across the map. Blow you friends out of the sky! Dogfight with up to eight players over local wireless or take on up to four players from around the world over Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
The Review Itself
Starfox on the Snes was and still is one of the best 16 bit games ever and showed Snes graphics to the extreme. The second Starfox game was cancelled before launch and so most people think this is that game. Time to test it
First thing i did was set up my wifi connection, obviously you need a PC with wireless connector/router of some type. The connection was found and set up in less than a minute, very easy and painless.
Quickly tried a Wifi battle and the first thing that startled me were the controls, i found it very weird playing through the touch pad, the touch pad is used to control the ship whilst you use the buttons to fire etc.
One thing i must add is that if you have played the Snes Starfox game then in my opinion the music and sounds are of similiar quality, that saying they do the job and thats all that matters.
Graphically it looks like better than the Snes but not as good as the N64 versions.
So time to go to the tutorial mode, now its time to use the stylus to control the ship, first off i was all over the place but after a few minutes it was easier to control but still very different to me.
Controlling the ship in a combat situation with the stylus and buttons is a whole new experiance, i had to ditch the stylus and just use my finger on my left hand and my right hand to do the buttons, It felt easier but this game is not easy for newbies, so even if your decent at Starfox games your going to find this a challenge.
This game will last you a decent amount of time and the addition of Multiplayer and the Wifi battles and you have months of fun to perfect your skills
Conclusion
Everything apart from the controls is as you would expect but for me Nintendo have relied too much on the Touchpad, i found the controls as hard as hell to get used to, seasoned gamers will no doubt adapt easily to the new control system but for newcomers and lesser equipped players this game could become a bore and too tedious to play.
Sometimes you can have an overly complicated control method. Overall Score for this game is 7/10
Not as good as i hoped but still fun.
