It looks like Nintendogs is about to see some competition in the cutesy puppy gaming market this fall. However, the new title, A Lovely Puppy, seems more mini-game heavy, unlike the gotta-play approach that Nintendogs takes. All the same elements are there -- feeding, training, playing -- but these puppies want to make sure you can solve puzzles, too. Also, instead of photorealism, the Lovely Puppy game utilizes a soft, pastel 2D style reminiscent of another upcoming game, Love Love Hamster. A Lovely Puppy features 18 dog types out of the box, and you can even choose the type of coat.
It's nice to see a different approach rather than a direct clone. Though we have very few details right now, we think this is one title that will eventually see a worldwide release. No one can resist the power of the puppy.

The GameCube has had a decent run, but time to call it a day. With the Wii around the corner, consumer interest in the console is waning, but it remains relatively strong in Japan, where the system outsells the 360. Super Potato in Osaka's Den Den Town has a limited quantity of GameCubes (used, we assume) that ballpark between US $45 and $25.

Destructoid's dudes found this pretty swank retro Famicom Alarm Clock over at Think Geek. Best serving as a travel alarm, the clock features:
• Alarm clock looks like a classic NES (Famicom in Japan) Controller • Use the D-Pad and buttons to change modes and set the alarm • Alarm sounds from Super Mario Bros. • Built-in mini-game • Score high enough in the mini-game and unlock another alarm sound. • Built-in Stand • Dimensions: 5″ x 2″ x .8″ • Requires 2 AAA Batteries. Not Included.
I like the concept of a mini-game to unlock another alarm sound. I'm betting on the Zelda theme — that would certainly make for a rousing start to a bleary-eyed morning. It goes for $25, which isn't too shabby.

Nintendo is expected to take the wraps off its plans for the Nintendo Wii later this week, but it appears some of the publisher's possible announcements have leaked out from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, of all places.
The ESRB's online database lists 18 rated games for the Wii, half of which have not been officially announced. Seven of the games are classic Sega titles that would probably be suitable for the Wii's Virtual Console, which will let Wii owners download and play older games on their system using system emulation software. They include Altered Beast, Columns, Ecco the Dolphin, Golden Axe, Ristar, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Toe Jam & Earl. All those titles are rated E for Everyone, and listed as appearing only on the Wii.
The ESRB database also shows a pair of previously unannounced Wii ports of licensed games. The board has already doled out an E10 + for Everyone 10 and Older rating for a Wii version of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, and E for Everyone rating for VeggieTales: LarryBoy and The Bad Apple. Already available on the PlayStation 2 and Game Boy Advance, LarryBoy versions on the PC, GameCube, Xbox, and PSP have also been rated, according to the site.
It's worth noting that the ESRB database isn't flawless. Earlier this year it listed the Eidos action shooter Urban Chaos: Riot Response as rated AO for Adults Only, when it actually had been granted an M for Mature. The ESRB later corrected the mistake.

Nintendo president turns journo and uncovers the truth behind the evolution of the Wii-remote
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently turned journalist, interviewing a selection of the Wii's designers about the console's innovative controller. This slightly odd exercise - part of the build-up to Nintendo's big Wii announcement at the end of the week - provides a pretty good insight into how the Wii-remote came into being.
Head of Wii development Genyo Takeda said: "The DS had a big influence. We kept in mind how we could follow the DS's path. As many people had been predicting, we even considered including a touch panel on the controller and even considered something that's like a PC mouse or track pad in that can be used as a pointing device."
Controller and system designer Kenichiro Ashida admitted the process of designing the Wii-remote was tricky : "I've been specializing in industrial design since my college years, but prior to entering Nintendo, I hadn't experienced industrial design so closely tied up with software. In particular, with controller design, we have to keep in mind that this is something that's used when playing software. With the Wii, we were unable to clearly see the shape of software, so this was an extremely difficult area."
Ashida added: "I had the strong feeling that this is a game machine that my family and I can use. Specifically, wouldn't it be okay to reset the style where you hold a controller in both hands and play intently from the morning? Not that we're criticizing that deep play style, but I felt the future in this concept of resetting the style of holding the controller in both hands."
Chief software producer and all-round gaming God Shigeru Miyamoto took a typically developer-focused view, saying the biggest problems surrounding the design of the Wii controller involved: "How to persuade users and designers who've gotten used to current interfaces. This was an extremely high hurdle." And one that seems to have been surmounted, given the excellent developer support the Wii now enjoys.
So Nintendo's message is clear: if you liked the DS, you'll like the Wii, and it's a machine for all the family, rather than merely hardcore gamers. Tune in this Friday, and we'll be able to tell you exactly how much the Wii will cost, when it will launch in the UK and what games will be available on day one and in the run-up to Christmas.

First in-game shots from Splinter Cell: Double Agent done Wii-style
Following hot on the heels of yesterday's news that a Wii version of Ubisoft's Splinter Cell: Double Agent will be a launch game for Nintendo's new console are first DA Wii screens. Pass mince pies over the goods, uploaded to this here page.
Double Agent finds Sam Fisher working both sides of the fence, as it were, as he infiltrates a terrorist group in an attempt to destroy it from within and stop it unleashing, er, terror on the world. "For the first time ever, experience the relentless tension and gut-wrenching dilemmas of life as a double agent. As you infiltrate a terrorist organisation in its American headquarters, you must carefully weigh the consequences of your actions. Kill too many criminals and you'll blow your cover. Hesitate too long and millions will die. Do whatever it takes to complete your mission, but get out alive", explains Ubisoft. Sounds exciting.
The publisher's spilled a few beans on how the Wii controller's unique features are being employed in Double Agent, saying that we'll be using it to "take stealth moves to a whole new level" and that "Your Wii controller is the key to mastering these tools [upgradeable weapons and gadgets] of the trade." Our cup runneth over.

Sega will be bringing a number of classic titles to Nintendo's next-generation console, including some splendid numbers from its back-catalogue with which we're really looking forward to renewing hostilities.
The listings were revealed on the ESRB ratings website, which every game has to go through for certification, and you'll be pleased to know that Sonic the Hedgehog is chief amongst their number. However, we're also looking forward to the soothing sights and sounds of Ecco of the Dolphin, the cruching mayhem of Golden Axe (especially the dinosaur riding) and the transforming delights of classic platformer Altered Beast (after our recent encounters with Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins we're really in the mood for some finger-wrenching Neff battling).
Anyway, the list is produced for you below, and official confirmation may well come at Nintendo's big announcement at the end of the week. We're pretty damn sure this is the definitive list though, so enjoy, but if you want to prompt Sega into releasing even more forgotten classics, why not give 'em a nudge in our comments field below and state your demands?
Ecco the Dolphin
Altered Beast
Toe Jam & Earl
Golden Axe
Columns
Sonic the Hedgehog
Ristar

LucasArts has released a 'Force-power' video shown at this year's E3 that provides indication on the direction the company is taking with technology that'll be employed in its new Star Wars project.
The company is keen to point out that the footage on display is pre-rendered and not a tech demo, but nevertheless the prospect of physics tech that lends a whole new dimension to the use of Force powers - as seen in the video - is mouth-watering. LucasArts is confident that the Star Wars game will look as good as what we're seeing here - in fact, it reckons it may even end up looking better than this in the end product.
Currently, the Star Wars project, which is being developed exclusively for next-generation consoles, remains unnamed, but LucasArts has stated the it's set between Episodes III and IV and "represents the first entry into a new series of Star Wars titles." The company's also said that the game "places a strong emphasis on unleashing the Force" and that the Jedi use of Force lightning in the video "will all make sense as you learn more about the game...".

For third-party publishers, one of the attractive features of Nintendo's upcoming Wii console is the low cost of developing games for the system compared with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. After a foray into AAA game development burned Majesco Entertainment last year, the publisher has decided that the Wii fits its current direction of budget software publishing.
As a result, Majesco today announced in its third-quarter financial earnings report that it will support the Wii, with a pair of games already in development. The company's first game for the system will be Bust-a-Move Revolution, a new version of the popular bubble-popping puzzle game, set for release in "early 2007."
"We remain focused on our strategy to publish value products and lower-cost games for handheld systems and make products with mass market appeal," Majesco interim CEO Jesse Sutton said in a statement. "Looking forward, we believe that Nintendo's new Wii console has excellent potential to capture the mass market gamer while remaining within our more conservative cost structure."
As for its financial results for the three months ended July 31, Majesco posted a modest loss, which stands as a huge improvement over its disastrous third quarter of 2005. The company reported a net loss of $724,000, a significant improvement over the $37.5 million loss it racked up in last year's third quarter. Revenues for the company were also better than last year, as Majesco brought in $12.6 million for the quarter, versus $4.6 million for the same stretch last year.
