Japan's biggest game is, once again, Final Fantasy. According to a report on the entertainment page of Japan's Mainichi Interactive news site, Square Enix's Final Fantasy III topped the 500,000 mark in its first week of sales. The title was released for the DS on 8/24.
The site reports that Square Enix was originally expecting first week sales to cap off at 350,000 units.

Bronto posted this news:
I'm working on a non-DS-related project which unfortunately takes longer than expected. Hence the lack of updates for NDSMail. However, I will probably do a maintenance release soon with new fat drivers and some other fixes.
There seem to be a lot of problems with the newer Supercard variants. Unfortunately these are very hard to track down and fix without the hardware.

An interview in the VIP lounge of Nintendo of Europe's website, requiring users to register via a pin number acquired by purchasing a Nintendo product, Ubisoft Senior Project Coordinator Stephanie Langlois breaks the news. "Online will maybe one day be announced by Nintendo but it won't be for the launch [of Red Steel]. In terms of gameplay I can't reveal anything really but what I can say is that internally we are making tons of tests," she said to the website.
Just a few days ago, 1UP reported on a rumor alleging that third parties had not yet received the development tools needed to implement online gaming into their launch-targeted releases, which the aforementioned statement appears to verify. Apparently they're leaving the option open for a post-release patch, but if Red Steel's successful, we imagine it will become sequel material.

Whether or not the Wii succeeds will depend on one and only one factor: how many zombies you can brutally eviscerate with the Wiikatana. So earlier reports that Resident Evil would not be coming to the Wii caused many of us to immediately write the platform off completely. Duck Hunt is for fruits: let us spill the black, rotting bowels of the living dead, Nintendo!
But good news! While Resident Evil 5 won't be coming to the Wii, having been designed from the ground-up for the 360 and PS3, some other iteration will be coming, and will be called... Resident Evil Wii. Presumably, they will build this game from the ground-up to take advantage of the Wii's controller... perhaps a turn in the House of the Dead direction?

Blahh has posted this news about his upcoming game for the DS:
Hopefully soon to come...Text Twist DS.
This great online puzzle/text game will be great for the DS.
So far I've just started it. I almost have the letter twisting done, and next up is loading an array of words (from within the program for now).
If anyone is willing to help me with some of the tougher portions of the program, that'd be great. I need someone with knowledge of reading/writing to storage and wifi would be good too.
I'm using PAlib

Yakuza-style Wii launch title Red Steel had a rough ride at its E3 showing, but in interviews at last week's Leipzig Game Convention, developer Ubisoft promised that it has taken the criticisms seriously - and is busily improving the title for release.
As Wii's first original shooter, the concept of Red Steel's gun-and-sword antics ended up being a little more exciting than the reality in its E3 showing, with tetchy controls and a slightly disappointing sword-fighting mechanic. We'd hoped to come out freely swinging, but found that it was more a case of using the Wii-mote to make gestures which the game then followed up with a pre-determined animation.
Both the visuals and sword-swinging have been receiving a makeover, with Ubisoft stating that the newfangled version will follow your Wii-mote slashes directly - although it's still unclear whether you can mix up chopping with a few choice stabs. The sensitivity of the crosshairs when shooting guns, another of our issues, has also been adjusted.
We'll let you know after our next hands-on with the game if the changes have been for the better.

Nintendo's presence at last weekend's Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Bellevue, Wash. was limited only to a dozen or so DS Lite kiosks, each running so-to-be-released titles. The quirky Elite Beat Agents, based on the import smash Osu!Takaka!Oendan!, drew many eyeballs, with attendees laughing at the absolute absurdity of the game's premise and its similarly kooky visuals. The edition of the game at PAX featured two playable missions, chronicling the male cheerleading squad's attempts to help a babysitter and return a lost dog to its rightful owner.
The babysitter scenario is pure silliness, with gamers tapping the bottom screen in time to the licensed track "Walkie Talkie Man" by Steriogram. Nailing the rhythm of the song to the approval of the expertly coiffed cheer squad helps the babysitter get the kids to calm down so she can resume her romance with a local paramour. The visuals, while different from the Japanese original, still feature exaggerated expressions. If you follow a beat properly, love is in the air and the cheer squad gives you a righteous nod. Fail, and its no time for love, Dr. Jones.
The lost dog scene starts with a young pup accidentally napping in the back of a truck. When the dog wakes, it realizes its hundreds of miles from home. Can the cheer team inspire the pooch to pick up the pace? Will there be a heartfelt reunion between man and man's best friend? Only tapping dots in rhythm with music (almost impossible to hear at PAX) and drawing lines across the touch-screen will solve the scenario. Like the babysitter scene, the dog sequence is full of over-the-top animation. When you complete a sequence, the dog suddenly turns primal -- giant white eyes and fierce choppers -- before racing at top speed to its home.
The game is not much more than a silly trifle -- gamers that get their thrills from fare like Metroid might find Elite Beat Agents too shallow for their tastes -- but its loaded with personality. But personality isn't always enough to guarantee success, and Nintendo is taking a minor risk bringing Elite Beat Agents to America. Will Elite Beat Agents enjoy more than niche success? Or is Elite Beat Agents destined to go the way of Space Channel 5, a cult gaming phenom that builds internet heat but never converts it to real currency?

First of all, my source was told that the price for the Wii in the U.S. will be $299. He was also told that all of this information is preliminary and does not necessarily reflect the finalized pricepoint.
It was also related to me that the Wii is bleeding hot! Excite Truck and Wii Tennis were both demoed, and my source felt like the controls were very well tuned, although difficult to master at first. And yes, these games were running off actual Wii hardware. It looks like the Wii is ready to go!
Sony also had some... demos... however, there was no hardware, no controller, and no actual gameplay. Everything that was shown were game trailers which did display some gameplay, but nothing running on actual PS3 hardware. So, here we are about 2 months from release day, and Sony STILL DOES NOT HAVE ACTUAL HARDWARE. Also, Sony is really driving to these managers that the major PS3 selling point is getting a cheap Blu-ray player. I'm not exactly sure why people would want to buy Blu-ray players at Toys R Us... but there you go.
Ok thats another rumour to digest

The endless Wii rumour mill continues to grind apace, with the latest gossip around the emerging home platform claiming Nintendo has, to date, shown only games that mask its true graphical potential.
The reason Nintendo did this? According to the French source citing 'secret Nintendo leakers', Nintendo wants to surprise everyone. That's right. The latest Nintendo rumour is that the final press showing of the Wii will see massively uprated graphics across the Wii range.
"Nintendo has been playing us the fool all along. They have been showing us trailers for games that have deliberately downgraded graphics compared to what the Wii can actually do. This is to create an element of surprise for the press during Nintendo's next media event," claims the Actu JV section of Jeux France.
Of course, this is an auto-fulfilling prophecy. It's not as though Wii software with almost six months' additional development time is going to look any worse than it did during its E3 debut...

Video game makers usually find themselves marketing to a young audience when they launch a new product. But with video games coming out that aim to help baby boomers with their aging brains, the marketing game plan may be changing.
Consider the introduction of Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day, ($20, all ages), released earlier this year for use with the hand-held Nintendo DS device.
Brain Age was the first of a planned series of brain games from Nintendo. It includes word and number puzzles, connect-the-dots exercises and other challenges. Most of the activities are timed. When the player is finished, the game issues a "brain age" that is tracked on a graph to show progress over the weeks and months the brain-exercise regimen is completed. The goal is for the brain age to be at least equal to or below the player's actual age.
The game taps into a growing body of medical research suggesting that brain teasers and problem-solving games can improve memory and brain function in older people, even those with dementia.
For Brain Age, Nintendo is shifting gears on its marketing and advertising strategy by contacting AARP, the nation's largest senior citizens advocacy organization, the Discovery Channel and magazines such as Health, Women's Health and Redbook.
Interest in brain exercise could revolutionize the video-game industry, says Nintendo of America's Perrin Kaplan. "It's kind of already starting," she said.
Other game makers have begun to cater to such interests with the popular Sudoku. Ubisoft recently released Go! Sudoku ($30) for the Sony PlayStation Portable game system, and Sudoku Fever (Global Star, $20) has more than 100,000 puzzles of varying difficulty to play on Nintendo's older game system, the Game Boy Advance. Also out is Ultra Sudoku & Ultra Kakuro (Abacus, for PCs, $30) and, Dr. Sudoku (Mastiff Games, for Game Boy Advance, $20).
Sudoku and a more far-reaching puzzler, Perplex City, a real-world treasure hunt that delivers clues through puzzle cards and Web sites, "are really getting some traction now," says John Davison, editorial director for Ziff Davis' video game magazines, including Electronic Gaming Monthly. "(Nintendo's) Brain Age, I'm sure, will be a huge phenomenon. The challenge is getting people to try it, because once they do, they'll be hooked. ... It taps in nicely to the emerging puzzle-culture thing that's gaining some momentum."
Meanwhile, researchers are attempting to quantify what effects games could have on aging. The Alzheimer's Association recommends puzzles as therapy because some studies have suggested they might improve memory, attention and problem-solving while staving off mental decline and, perhaps, reducing the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The themes of "brain food" and periodic mental breaks are being emphasized as methods of stress relief to the female-skewed audience of MSN Games, which offers puzzle games such as Hexic, Bejeweled, Mozaki Blocks, Bespelled and Scrabble Blast!
Beyond stress reduction, these games amount to the type of "brain food" that can combat loss of memory and brain function, Hall says.
"Playing online games can be a new and effective approach for getting brain food," she says, "and this fits seamlessly into the digital lifestyle so many of us lead."
