Not content with preparing seven titles for the Wii's upcoming and still nebulously dated launch, Le Ubisoft has announced that Splinter Cell: Double Agent will also join the arm flailing fray. IGN reports that the Wii version is based on the PS2 and Gamecube builds and that it will fully utilize the system's unique control capabilities. The exact control specifics have yet to be divulged. One of the examples cited is using the Wiimote to pick locks, though there's arguably more appeal to be found in the the thought of slashing a hapless guard's throat with one swift and decisive motion.
Curiously, the game will be missing "some" of the missions present in the Xbox 360 version (and less curiously, an online component). The Wii launch will likely fall after Double Agent's October debut, so the cause doesn't appear to be an unreasonable restriction in development time. A few missions for a different control scheme -- is that a fair trade? While it's certainly possible that Ubisoft will include extra missions more closely designed with the Wii controller in mind, that seems unlikely given the platform differences in past Splinter Cell titles. After all, there are seven other motion-sensitive games that need to be bitten off and chewed before the Wii's launch later this year.

Heres an excerpt
Nobody can accuse publisher Ubisoft of not supporting Nintendo's new Wii console. The third party has more games planned for Wii launch than just about any other company and the lineup spans multiple genres. One previously unseen game set for release this holiday is GT Pro Series, a racer developed by MTO and updated for the Big N's new generation system. The title not only employs a unique cel-shaded visual style, but comes packaged with the first Wii-mote peripheral outside of those developed by Nintendo: a steering wheel.
IGN Wii interviewed GT Pro Series' associate producer Tats Myoio about the upcoming project. New details and first screenshots can be found in the article below. And oh, we've got first photos of the steering wheel attachment, too.

Heres an excerpt:
You may recall, if you've seen the original Chicken Little, the spoof movie at the end of the flick that "documented" the characters' lives as a Star Trek-style action film, featuring the lead character, voiced by the manly Adam West, as a big, buff, action hero. Buena Vista's taking that universe and expanding on it in a videogame sequel: Chicken Little: Ace in Action for both the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo Wii, developed by the company's recently acquired Avalance Studios.
The Nintendo DS is getting a version of its own, in the works at DC Studios (the team that brought DS owners the Rayman 2 port back in the system's launch window). But instead of porting the action platformer that's set to hit the consoles in a month's time, the handheld development team is instead creating an original handheld experience. Buena Vista Interactive stopped by the offices this week to give us a taste of the near-final game.

Article about gaming in Korea:
Go to any video game store in Korea and you’re bound to hear the name ‘Mario’ within a matter of minutes. Mothers come in looking for gifts for their kids, and they usually don’t ask for Final Fantasy, Tekken, or even Everybody’s Golf, despite the fact that Sony virtually owns the console market in this country. Rather, they ask for Mario, or “something like Mario”. Sadly, their requests are usually met with negative responses. Either stores simply don’t have any Nintendo products, or the little merchandise they do have is unreasonably expensive. What gives?

Over on the WiiChat.com forums, i0n has posted a helpful FAQ encompassing 51 items related to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Not sure about the differences between the GameCube and Wii versions? Curious as to which Link will star in TP? Wondering who Midna is? i0n's got answers.
Of course, the FAQ doesn't crack any of the game's great mysteries, but it's a well organized hub for the information and ideas that have been shared thus far.

Over at Game|Life, Chris Kohler has a rather hasty but somewhat interesting summary of a Nintendo.jp feature on the design philosophy and evolution of the Wii.
Nintendo chief hardware dude Genyo Takeda talks about how, as soon as GC was finished, they had to start thinking about the next hardware system. If they followed the accepted industry roadmap, they'd think about giving it better graphics and more power.
But then they started thinking, wait a minute, even if we do this, is it really going to have as much of an impact on players relative to the cost? If you give people 1, they want 2, give them that and they want 3. Where does it stop? 5, 10, 100...? This creates a sort of malaise because they'll never be satisfied
So they figured they wanted to create something different. They started to wonder why video game systems couldn't be refined like other technology -- like, rather than make a bigger, more powerful system, take what you have and make the chips smaller, make the box smaller, make it consume less power..

The Wii console will not support DVD playback when it launches later this year, according to Nintendo's official site. This comes despite DVD playback previously being listed as a feature of the new console. But, in all fairness, does anybody care?
At the predicted price of £149, Wii is likely to be the perfect accompaniment to your other games console which, of course, has DVD playback as standard. And with standalone entry-level DVD players now shifting for less than 30 notes, picking up a player and a Wii console would cost you less than half the amount of shelling out for a PS3 next March.

sgstair posted some new news about DS Wifi:
Just because I figured this should probably make it out to the public; I’ve done something horrible in the wifi lib that could potentially make code running alongside it crash. To be clear, this will be fixed in 0.3b, which I am trying to get out as soon as I have time to do so.
However, just because it’s good to know if you’re developing an app using 0.3a, here’s the details of the bug:
In the wifi lib, when receiving packets and under a few other circumstances, the Wifi lib in it’s present form performs a malloc call from within the Wifi_Timer() call, and can also perform a malloc call from within the Wifi_Sync function, for FIFO messages - the only problem is both of those calls are often within interrupts, so the possibility of pre-empting a malloc in “normal” code (which, malloc is also called in printf, for reference) is nontrivial. The only problem with this, is that malloc wasn’t really designed for that, so a malloc call preempting another malloc call can cause fatal problems, corrupt the heap, or crash your code.
There are a few ways to deal with this problem, the first of which is to use a seperate heap allocator, which is the solution I’ll be incorperating into 0.3b. Those of you in the know can also implement some form of locking, wrapping allocation calls in interrupt disabling code, or something similar.
Another thing to make note of is this modification will cause the wifi lib to eat up a specific amount of memory on startup (which will be user selectable, probably set to 64k or 128k for a default) - there will also be the option to disable the new memory management if you have your own solution; which will be an extra flag that will be necessary to use in the init call!
So, if you’ve had some problems with the wifi lib crashing for the past few versions, it’s likely my fault, combined with your use of malloc/printf; all will be fixed soon though, and 0.3b includes a few other bugfixes for various other problems - I’ll list the fixes when it comes out.

After getting a bit panicky yesterday about the lack of Wii rumble, we got two corrections to our story, assuring us that the Wiimote has rumble after all.
First of all, an anonymous game dev working on a way-hyped next gen game messaged us, assuring us his dev kit very much had rumble. That's a relief.
Secondly, Mark Green, editor of NGamer magazine, wrote us. Mea culpa, apparently. From the NGamer homepage:
No Wii Remote rumble? Kittsy spotted that I'd made a mess of page 15 just after we finished the mag. It was too late to correct and resend the page to the printers (apparently yelling "Hold the presses!" doesn't actually result in boiler-suited workmen running about like mad and machinery grinding to a halt). So we forget about it, assuming the worst that might happen is that a few readers might write in to point and laugh at our mistake. Of course, now it's all over the internet. And we look very silly indeed. So, to clarify: the Wiimote does have a rumble. And a speaker. Shigsy isn't going to kick out either feature (as far as we know). DON'T PANIC.

Japanese gamers may know the age of their brains, but do they know their manners and etiquette?
The idea that the country's youth lack good old-fashioned common sense has become, well, common sense. Whether this situation is real or imaginary Dengeki Online recently ran an overview of a game that hopes to remedy the alleged problem.
Kanshuu Nihon Josikiryoku Kenteikyoukai Imasara Hito ni ha Kikenai Otona no Joushikiryoku Training, slated for release October 26 in Japan, is endorsed by the Josikiryoku Kenteikyoukai, or roughly translated, the Association for Common Sense Certification. This organization is devoted to running examinations that evaluate "common sense," by quizzing examinees on basic cultural etiquette, business manners, and a smattering of specialized vocabulary, such as economic and IT industry words. The upcoming game will contain about 1,800 multiple-choice questions, based on the aforementioned exam. The touch pen will be used to select answers.
Joushikiryoku Training is under development by Nintendo and HAL Laboratory Inc. It will retail for 3,800 yen, about $32.70. Gamers with a good knowledge of the Japanese language, a burning desire to know which seat of the taxi is given to the most important passenger in Japan, and who know what that Okinawan dish made of bitter gourd, egg, and Spam is actually called, may want to check out this title.

Nintendo UK boss David Yarnton has told gamesIndustry.biz, that reports the Wii will retail for £149 and will be in shops shortly before November 24 are "definitely not right".
The claims, which appeared in an article by trade publication MCV, are "only speculation, and definitely not fact," according to Yarnton.
"They're not far off, but they're definitely not right," he told GI.biz.
As previously announced, Nintendo is holding a Wii press event in London next Friday, where it is set to reveal the official price point and launch date for the console.
"We will be announcing more details then," Yarnton confirmed.

Nintendo has confirmed that it has begun receiving the internal CPUs, dubbed ‘Broadway’, for its Wii console.
Manufactured by IBM at its semiconductor development and manufacturing facility in New York, the Broadway chips are central to the architecture of Nintendo’s next-gen console.
“The first chips are in our possession,” confirmed Genyo Takeda, senior managing director for Nintendo’s Integrated Research and Development Division, in a statement from the platform holder.
“Today’s milestone marks the final stage of our drive to reach both core and non-traditional gamers with an inviting, inclusive and remarkable gaming experience,” he added.
Nintendo and IBM have a working relationship that dates back to 1999, but the manufacturer also develops microchips for both Microsoft and Sony’s next-generation consoles.
Nintendo recently confirmed that it is on track to ship an expected six million units of the Wii before the end of March 2007.

Reports sweeping the internet at the moment are saying that the Nintendo Wii will launch on November 24, priced at just £149 and that stock will be plentiful if you want to fill your Christmas stocking.
Trade mag MCV is reporting both price and launch details as fact, even ahead of next Friday's press conference when Nintendo is expected to confirm those crucial details. Nintendo are remaining tight lipped and are apparently refusing to comment on the reports, but when such a well established and respected magazine goes early, we have to suspect there's more than a glimmer of truth to it.
We spoke to Lisa Foster, Managing Editor of MCV to see how confident the trade title is in their breaking exclusive and she told CVG, "We are very confident about the story, especially the price and that Nintendo Wii will launch in the week ending November 24."
Naturally we also contacted Nintendo to see if they have any comment on the story and we are still awaiting their reply. However Nintendo boss David Yarnton, told GI.biz that MCV's story was, "only speculation, and definitely not fact. They're not far off, but they're definitely not right," the Nintendo boss added.
CVG also contacted a number of industry sources and insiders to see what their reaction was and while most agreed with us, that the price seems right on the mark, a substantial number of our sources were a little more unsure about the actual launch date.
Most seemed to agree that November 24 might be a touch early and that an early December release would seem more likely, especially given this week's news about the launch of the PS3 being delayed until March 2007. So you pays your money and takes your choice we guess, and while we wholeheartedly back MCV's price point, we tend to favour more of an early December date for Wii launch. Either way though it's great news for Wii fans and all will be revealed next week when Nintendo make the news official. Keep it tuned to CVG for all the Wii goodness you can consume.
