FISCO news service of Japan reports that a Merrill Lynch (MER) research report from last Friday acknowledged the anticipation building up for the Wii and believes it will be a factor in pushing its share price higher. As a result Merrill lifted its target share price to 27,000 yen ($28.78 ADR equivalent) from 23,000 yen ($24.51 ADR equivalent).
A Daiwa Institute of Research report I commented on in an earlier post hyperlinked at the beginning of this post sees Nintendo's ordinary shares theoretically trading up to between 25,000 yen ($26.64 ADR equivalent) and 30,000 yen ($31.97 ADR equivalent). The first amount is based on the Nintendo 64 launch and the second is based on the Super Nintendo.

Via Telegraph Blog:
Back in the early 1990s, when Ben Elton was best known for mocking the establishment rather than propping it up (The Thin Blue Line anyone?), he wrote an occasionally funny book about the car industry called Gridlock.
Playing tennis the Wii way
One of the more memorable moments featured the launch of a new pan-European car, which after some spectacularly ill-informed market research, was named the Crappee. Apparently it sounded quite good in Spanish.
The Crappee sprung to mind recently during a press event for Nintendo’s new games machine, the rival to the new XBox 360 and PlayStation 3, which is due out in time for Christmas. In an attempt to find something that sounded good in French, Japanese and Italian, Nintendo’s marketing people came up with the Wii (pronounced “wee”).
The word Wii is supposed to be inclusive and positive. However, given that the machine will be popular with seven to 11 year old boys, a group not best known for restraint when it comes to finding scatological puns, it’s certainly a courageous choice.
Putting the silly name aside, the Wii is rather good fun even for people like me who don’t particularly find computer games appealing.
Its big selling point is its controller - a small white box called a wand that looks like a TV remote control. The wand is wireless, has just a couple of buttons and is motion sensitive controller. Rather than play games hunched in front of the television with a fiddly and irritating joypad, you can stand proud in your sitting room and wave the Wii wand around in the air.
If you’re playing tennis, the wand is your racket and you swipe it from side to side to hit the ball. If you’re playing golf, you swing it like a club. It can be used as a light sabre, a sword, a conductor’s baton or a handlebar.
What is liberating about the Wii is that it assumes no prior knowledge of computer games culture.
To outsiders like myself, a Playstation or Xbox games console joypad is a fairly intimidating beast, packed with mysterious and intimidating buttons, marked with Xs, circles or squares. Games are now so mind-blowingly three-dimensional and interactive that unless you’ve been brought up on them since the age of seven, newcomers to the games culture have little chance of understanding what’s going on.
In contrast, the Wii offers simplistic, intuitive and social play. Its button-free design, and choice of simple, mostly non violent software, is wiping clean the slate of the last 15 years in an attempt to appeal to people who don’t like the computer games culture of guns, sports, cars and monsters.
Proof came from the female photographer who came with me for the trial. Beforehand she didn’t “get” computer games and had to be forcibly handled by two burly Nintendo employees to have a go at the Wii tennis.
In the end, she was having so much fun, the same two men had to pull her off.

New Preorder from SuccessHK:

The Empire strikes back in this sequel to the endearing Star Wars game made all of LEGOs. LEGO Star Wars II follows the Rebel Alliance's battle to dismantle the Galactic Empire and rebuild a galaxy in pieces. From Darth Vader's pursuit of Princess Leia aboard her blockade runner to a showdown on the reconstructed Death Star, the game includes even more of the family-friendly LEGO action. The sequel finally allows you to build with your LEGO blocks, as a new Free Play mode allows gamers to customize the vehicles for new ship designs, as well as Free Play all of the playable characters (over 100 in total) by mixing and matching body parts, forming the likes of "Stormbacca", "Chew Vader" and "Leia Wan Kenobi." It looks at though Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, is shaping up to be a truly epic affair, with hints from Nintendo in the US indicating an absolutely massive gaming event is on the cards. According to Nintendo, it takes Link 45 minutes to ride across the reworked Hyrule atop his horse.
Although this writer's strong point isn't doing sums, we can tell that this information means a large playing surface is going to be on offer. If it takes 45 minutes, and horses gallop at 40MPH, that makes the distance 30 miles. If the world is square, that would make a 900 square mile playing field. However, we just realised that Nintendo obviously means from one corner to another. This being the case, we initiated the Great SPOnG MS Paint and the 'Bit of Paper' Scientific Test to determine the approximate size of Hyrule in the Legend of Zelda, the fruits of which you can see to the right of these very words. We estimate you'll be looking at about 441 square miles should the world be square and remember, some versions of Hyrule have been square.
All of which means Hyrule in new Zelda should be absolutely huge. Which is good, good news. Expect confirmation as soon as we get it.

While developer Nibris has been attracting a lot of attention for its intriguing looking Sadness, it's easy to forget the Polish developer has been beavering away on a couple of other titles too.
Chief of which is a remake of the classic Raid over the River, which is piloting its way toward a release next year on DS, with a version also planned for Nintendo Wii in the fullness of time.
The first movie from the game has raided in from across the river this morning, (oh alright then, they sent it to us). Nibris is promising to redefine the vertical shooter as we know it, with extensive strategy elemets involved in navigating six different timelines and multiple outcomes.
Marek Okoñ, game designer for ROTR, says, "It's a title which is going to change the current image of a vertical shooter as a meaningless, arcade game which only tests the speed of player's fingers."
There's a bit of a glitch on the vid with an occasional black bar intervening, but it should give you a welcome taster of the raiding delights to come. Raid Over the River debuts on DS next year.

Nintendo has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that an MP3 player for the platform holder's handhelds, sold under the name of Play Yan in Japan, is coming to Europe.
"It's just like the Play Yan, where you insert an SD card into a GBA cart-sized adaptor," a Nintendo spokesperson explained.
"That is then inserted into either your DS, DS Lite, GBA SP or GB Micro - turn it on and away you go."
Nintendo has yet to confirm whether the MP3 player will come complete with an SD card. A 1GB SD card, which can hold approximately 240 songs, currently retails for around 30 Euro.
The spokesperson dismissed suggestions that the player will only work with SD cards of up to 2GB storage capacity, stating: "You can put any other sized SD card into it, not just 2GB."
According to the spokesperson, "Both price and release date for Europe are still to be confirmed." However, gadget website Gizmodo is citing an October release date and a 29.99 Euro price point.

FATSort is the successor to NexSort. The main difference between the two programs is that FATSort operates directly on the FAT of the drive. The FAT is the part of a disk which holds information of the files and folders on the disk.
FATSort is designed to change the order of the files on the disk. This is useful when a device lists the files on the drive without sorting them by any own criteria. Then the files will be listed in the same order as they were copied to the disk.
This program is especially designed for use with portable mp3-players, such as NEX II from Froniter Labs. Just mount the compact flash which holds your music-files and press start. Within seconds the operation is done and the files will be shown in the order you want on the player display.
Files will be reordered in one of three choices: Alphabetical order, Play list order or random order. Folders will be reordered in either alphabetical order or in random order.
The system requirements will be "discovered" when the program is done. It will probably only work in Windows 2000 though.
Also note that this program operates directly on the FAT of a drive. Any malfunction of this program may destroy any files on your disc.

Up until now, most content related to the Wii has consisted of either shaky cam gameplay footage, trailers or photos put up on various game sites only to be pulled down seconds later. Finally, we get a bit of a reprieve as IGN dishes out an improved quality and in-depth look at the Wii at this year's Leipzig convention in Germany.
While we're sure most of you have been pining for a Wii since it was first announced, videos like this could edge people closer to making the ultimate decision of adding the console to their already crowded game room. Does this latest look at the Wii sway you in any particular direction?

Kuwanger has released a new unofficial version of pogoshell which works on the GBA and also the DS, heres all the info:
Pogoshell is a file manager for the Gameboy Advance. Really, that's an oversimplification. Pogoshell also includes a much better save management system than most flash cart frontends provide. Another big feature is plug-ins, a system of loading files through an association system. Finally, Pogoshell supports a theming system, offering a much more customable interface.
With the development of Pogoshell v2.0b4, official development of Pogoshell has stalled. While there was a Subversion archive setup with work towards, assumedly, a v2.0b5, the work was never completed towards an official release and doesn't properly work when simply compiled. With v2.0b4's source unavailable, I decided to continue work using v2.0b3's source. So far, this has meant merging in some changes from the Subversion archive, changing theme support in many ways, and removing a few limitations to things like file listings. For a move complete list of new features, look below. Note, internal mod player support had to be removed, as the license for it required permission to redistribute, and I personally didn't want to require others to ask permission to make their own forks.
Features (above Pogoshell v2.0b3)
Maximum of 500 files per directory
Internal JPEG viewer
Internal encrypted JPEG viewer
Internal apack compressed multiboot support
Hidden directory support*
Theme Switching support
Improved Theming options*
Screeensaver support
Limited list position tracking between directories/games
Fixes some close() bugs
Easier list movement with left/right
Font truncation (to avoid writing writing outside of a widget)
And others I'm forgetting
*Features incompatible with either Pogoshell v2.0b3 tools or with v2.0b3 themes

Kuwanger has released some new unofficial versions of several GBA emulators, heres the info from this Nes emulator for GBA & Nintendo DS:
Its a release from a month back but no site has posted it so ill post here:
PocketNES...k is a fork of PocketNES. More specifically, it is a fork of PocketNES-csd, which is a fork of PocketNES-cs, which is a fork of Dwedit's PocketNES /w Cheats, which is a fork of PocetNES. Major features includes cheat support and .NES Partial Compression, a scheme to compress upwards of 128KB of an .nes rom. Compression can be accomplished with either the included nc.exe program or the external anc3.py program, the latter of which requires Python. If the file is compressable, the resulting file can be used directly with PogoShell (with the appropriate addition to pogo.cfg) or they can be renamed to end with .nes and used with the PocketNES Menu Maker; note, compressed files will obviously have a different checksum than the original ROM, so any settings you wish to have for the compressed ROM will have to be added manually.
Actually compression of ROMs should be as simple as: "nc file.nes file.npc": from the command line. While most ROMs can be partially compressed, not all can be.

Kuwanger has released some new unofficial versions of several GBA emulators, heres the info from this Sega Master System emulator for GBA & Nintendo DS:
SMSAdvance is a Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator for the Gameboy Advance. This page is dedicated to my fork of SMSAdvance to include compression support. Currently this is a beta release, as I've just created this version and it needs extensive testing. For those willing to test this software, download the binary distribution and read the readme, especially the compression support section. Do note, you will need to download apack.exe to be able to compress files.

Kuwanger who i discovered today (and i can claim to be the only newsposter to have posted news of these emus ) has released some new unofficial versions of several GBA emulators, heres the info from this Colecovision emulator for GBA & Nintendo DS:
Cologne is a Gameboy Advance emulator of the Colecovision, a system in many ways similar to the Sega Master System. Created before the great 80s video game crash, Colecovision for a time was a strong competetor to Atari's stronghold on home video gaming. In many ways I am still awed by the graphics ability of the Coleco, given my memories of the graphic capabilities of the Atari 2600.
Without digressing further, my work on Cologne has been, again, work on support of compression. Unfortunately, the few games I've used it upon indicate that many games of that area aren't very compressible (very understandable given the time period). There has been discussion by FluBBa that indicates that this compression support will possibly be integrated into future versions of Cologne (mainly at my request), and I have offered to make the appropriate additions.
Please note, this version is based of Cologne v0.5. Cologne v0.6 is currently available. Given the level of compression available (along with Cologne v0.6's working Link Transfer support), I'd recommend the use of Cologne v0.6 until Cologne v0.7 (or whatever) is released with compression support, unless one is truly very desperate for space.
Cologne v0.5 k2 - A second release of my modification of Cologne, including some fixes for Go Multiboot (though Link Transfer is probably broken). This is source and all. Look in the GBABIN/ directory for cologne.gba. You will need the official release, probably. Also, you will need Python to use the compression program cap.py for compression.

Primed to straddle the thundering wagon of success ridden by Prof. Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain, Nintendo has revealed that the equally long-winded English Training: Have Fun Improving Your Skills is set to hit DS in Europe on October 13.
As the name implies, English Training, part of the Touch! Generations range, is designed to improve your skills in the fine art of writing proper. Using the DS touch-screen, users are presented with dictation exercises and must successfully transcribe the spoken phrases with the stylus. Once a task is complete, the game cunningly analyses the inputted text and highlights spelling and grammar errors. English Training also makes use of the DS mic, using voice recognition to assess spoken phrases. Hopefully, we'll have none of that "BLUE!" malarky this time around, eh?
With tests divided into English Training Competition, English Word Test Competition and Dictation Race Competition, English Training uses a similar calender system to Brain Training, ranking perfomance so you can see how your skills are developing over time.
English Training: Have Fun Improving Your Skills will dot your i's and cross your t's from October 13 in the UK, for the not unreasonable sum of twenty shiny English pounds.

In the eternal battle of pink and black, black seems to have come out on top. While the release of the pink-colored DS Lite to Japan last month was met with early morning lines exceeding 200 in some locations, the release of Jet Black on the 2nd managed to double that!
Yes, it was an expected sell out for the debut of the fifth DS color variation. Nintendo Japan launched the DS Lite Jet Black color on a Saturday morning along side two heavily-advertised titles: Tingle RPG and Chousouju Mecha MG. We're not sure just yet how well the games did (although there were actually some reports of sell outs for Final Fantasy III, which was released the week before), but the hardware disappeared rather quickly.
In Shinjuku, lines of over 200 had formed two hours before the 9:30 opening time of the large Yodobashi Camera shop outside the station's East exit. The store managers decided to open at 8:30. A good thing, as the line continued to grow, until it reached a maximum of 500! It took just an hour for the system to sell out at this location.
As tends to be the case, this scene was repeated throughout Tokyo. The massive Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara (do give this place a visit if you find yourself in Tokyo) had a line of over 300, including one person who'd waited since midnight. Bic Camera's large Ikebukuro shop saw lines of over 400.
Famitsu.com reports that this particular launch appealed to the boys. Said one Yodobashi employee to the site, "At the release of pink, there was a tremendous number of girls. But today, male customers overwhelmingly dominated."
A few customers shared comments with Famitsu.com. "I really wanted black, so I waited for this day," said one person. "When I saw the line, I wanted one, so I just lined up and saw what happened," said another, proudly displaying his beehive mentality.
With the release of Jet Black, Nintendo has run out of announced color variations. Expect the lines to keep on forming, though, especially with games like Pokemon Diamond & Pearl coming later this month.
