While Nintendo and Sony may be holding their cards close to the vest when it comes to which games will arrive on store shelves alongside their new systems, Activision CEO Robert Kotick has detailed which games his company will have on shelves alongside the new systems.
In a presentation to the Merrill Lynch Media and Entertainment Conference yesterday, Kotick said that Activision would have three games for each of the new systems, calling it, "the largest launch lineup that we've had in the history of our company."
When the PlayStation 3 launches November 17 in the US, it will be supported by Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Tony Hawk's Project 8. Wii gamers will get a similar array of games, with Call of Duty 3, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, according to Kotick.
Kotick said that the largest launch lineup in Activision history would be followed by the largest lineup of games in a single year for the company, mentioning some unannounced--but hardly surprising--titles.
"When you look out at our fiscal '08 titles, this is the largest in the history of our company," Kotick said, "starting with our June quarter, with Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Transformers, later in the year new releases [of] Call of Duty, Tony Hawk Next, The Bee Movie, a Marvel title, a new Guitar Hero, and more to come."
While it's impossible to pin down exactly which Marvel property that title will be based on, it's almost certainly not going to be Iron Man. While the golden Avenger has a feature film scheduled to hit theaters in 2008, Activision confirmed in July that it had parted ways with the license.
As for Guitar Hero, Activision made no secret of its intent to extend the franchise when it purchased developer RedOctane for nearly $100 million. Last month saw reports that the publisher was working on not just one, but as many as four new games in the series.
[UPDATE] An Activision representative confirmed the company's launch plans for GameSpot, and added a couple more titles to its Wii lineup. When Nintendo's new system launches, the Activision Value brand will also have Rapala's Tournament Fishing and World Series of Poker on store shelves alongside the new hardware. The representative also noted that Tony Hawk Next is still a working title for the game.

American fans of the anime Fullmetal Alchemist have had plenty of opportunities to get their game on with the characters of the animated series...provided they had a PlayStation 2 or Game Boy Advance. When news of a Nintendo DS Fullmetal Alchemist game spread, many owners of Nintendo's handheld rejoiced...provided they lived in Japan.
Now, North American DS-owning Fullmetal Alchemist fans can finally join in on the fun, as Destineer today announced that it is releasing Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy in the US. The Minneapolis-based publisher will release the Bandai-developed game this fall.
Dual Sympathy is a side-scrolling action game that sees players take the role Edward Elric as he battles Homunculi and sets out on a quest to retrieve the Philosopher's Stone. The six playable characters in the game will have the ability to concoct weapons from various items (hence, the alchemy) and turn them on enemies.
The DS version will also feature voice work from the actors in the television series, unlockable content, and 10 touch-screen-based minigames.
Fullmetal Alchemist: Dual Sympathy has not yet been rated or priced.

News from Lik Sang
You stopped believing in your leader. You think there is something terribly wrong with this industry. N has an answer. Revolution. Code named Wii. And if you see what they see, and if you feel as they feel, then you will seek as they seek. And two months from now, you will stand behind Wii to give them a 19th of November that shall never, ever, be forgot.
This morning, USA woke up with newspapers headlining about the Wii launch schedule in the Land of the Frii. Same as for Nintendo DS, the newgen home console from the Kyoto-based firm will be released first in North America, on 19th of November, right on time for the Thanksgiving holidays. In the Land of the Rising Sun, it has just been unveiled a couple of hours ago, during the Nintendo press conference in Tokyo, that Wii will debut on the second day of December. No date has been set for Europe at press time.

In terms of pricing, the Wii will change hands for 25.000 Yen (~ US$215.50; €170.00) in Japan, and for 250 US$ stateside. The launch bundle will include Wii: Sports, which, as a compilation of five different sports (Tennis, Ping Pong, Baseball, Golf, Flying), is the ideal intuitive title to get the entire family around the new machine for some immediate fun. This specific software is certainly the perfect choice to demonstrate the Wiimote functionalities and to reveal the potential of the Wii concept at first touch. Launch games will be priced around 50 USD, while the Virtual Console library will offer the biggest hits of the Famicom/NES, the Super Famicom / SNES, the N64, the Megadrive and the PC Engine for download, with prices ranging between 5 and 10 US$ a click.

The 0 US$ no-money-down reservation list is still open at Lik Sang and if you didn't register yet, it's well time to do so. Shortly before launch, once final availability, allocation lots and other supply issues are dealt with, we will know where there is shortage and where there is not, how many units we get in and how much we have to pay for them. We will then contact all recorded customers by email in order to confirm pricing. You will then be free to cancel, confirm or delay your preorder. You will also be allowed to choose the region of your system in accordance with your own personal preferences. Lik Sang had the same system in place for Nintendo DS and Sony PSP and everything went as smooth as it can go, if you keep in consideration the chaos that is a new video game system launch.
Be prepared that the day-1 prices will be higher than the manufacturer's suggested tag. Experienced and veteran hardcore gamers, who are not importing a system for the first time, know that buying a Wii-at-launch or a PSP-at-launch is not the same thing as simply buying a standard Wii or a random PSP on some supermarket shelf. You're paying for the privilege of getting it two months before the massive overflow. Mastercard would call that 'priceless'. There is never enough of the good stuff on a launch day, and Lik Sang is required to pay premium pricing to get earlybird stock in sufficient levels for everybody. We can only extend these offers to you during the first couple of months, while waiting for the market to stabilize.
If you are not prepared to fight, rush, pay more than you should and race for your nextgen system, you would be well advised not to order from Lik Sang right now and to wait it out for 6 to 12 more weeks, until things calm down, and then search for the best local offer around town. On the other hand, if you are like me and just can't wait, if you are compulsive and need to get the new gaming gear instantly after it's out (or even before, if it was really up to you), then make yourself heard, we'll get you covered.

With The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess set to launch alongside Nintendo Wii in the US on November 19th and Japan on December 2nd, you might wonder what's happening to the Cube version.
Well, stop doing that, because Nintendo said in a Q&A session after its New York press conference this afternoon that the GameCube version will be released on December 11th in the USA.
There's no word on what that means for us over here, but we'd imagine that'll be cleared up during tomorrow's press event in London. Stay tuned, etc.

Amongst the many titles shown off in Japan at Nintendo's Wii unveiling earlier today was a new Resident Evil title called Umbrella Chronicles.
Briefly trailed in this week's Famitsu, Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles (Japanese name) is being produced by Masachika Kawata, whose previous work includes porting Resident Evil 4 to PS2.
You may remember Capcom having mentioned the Wii Resi title previously of course - in May, the company said it would "combine the series' intense gaming experience and atmosphere with the revolutionary control system of the Wii", but didn't go into much more detail.
And it's still not going into much detail - other than to say it's an action game, and it will make use of the Wii remote control. Which is a bit like pointing out that the sky is blue.
Speaking of which, Forever Blue was another new entry on the list of titles in development for Wii. It's an underwater diving game, apparently, which Nintendo is working on, and like Umbrella Chronicles it made a brief appearance on a video showreel.
Another title you might not have heard much about is Hajimete no Wii, which IGN translates to "Starting Out With Wii". Appropriately it's among the console's 16 launch titles, comes bundled with a Wii remote, and consists of nine mini-games - including the Duck Hunt look-alike and table tennis game glimpsed in previous trailers for the console.
Edit: Finally, separate reports from Japan suggest that Capcom plans to bring the next Devil Kings game to Wii in addition to PS2, although no further details were announced.

SEGA has announced that Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz will see the introduction of two new characters - YanYan and Doctor.
YanYan's a "young, vivacious female monkey" apparently, while Doctor is "an older monkey with a past steeped in mystery due to his acute case of amnesia".
There's more to them than that though - as each will have particular strengths and weaknesses in acceleration, speed and jumping ability.
SEGA says the size of the monkey ball and its weight will also play a role in a character's performance in Banana Blitz, which introduces jumping - activated by flicking the remote or pressing a button - to the series for the first time.
The full game will also feature a huge number of mini-games, and is due out alongside the Nintendo Wii in Japan on December 2nd. For more, check out our E3 impressions.

Heres a shot of the packaging:

The final pieces of this fall's video game battle fall into position today as Nintendo announces that its new Wii home system will sell for $250 — half the price of Sony's cheapest PlayStation 3 — and launch Nov. 19, two days after the PS3.
The two next-generation systems face Microsoft's Xbox 360, which will have had a year's head start; the anticipated 360 game Gears of War, out Nov. 7, is expected to boost sales.
But Nintendo is deploying a different approach than the others. The cutting-edge 360 ($300-$400) and PS3 ($500-$600) support HD video — and the PS3 uses the just-out Blu-ray HD disc format — while Wii (pronounced "we") depends on more conventional technology.
But Wii's unique wireless motion-sensitive controller has captured the attention of game designers and players. "We think all the other initiatives in the home console space have been much too hardcore-gamer-focused. We want consumers to be able to pick up (the Wii controller) and play," says Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.
Nintendo plans to have 4 million systems shipped worldwide by year's end, he says. Sony recently reduced from 4 million to 2 million the number of PS3s likely to reach the USA and Japan this year. Analysts expect U.S. retailers to have about 400,000 PS3s and about 1 million Wii systems at launch.
Included with Wii is the Wii Sports game (with tennis, golf, basketball and bowling), the controller and a "nunchuck" attachment. Other details:
• Wii owners can download and play games from Nintendo's older NES, Super NES and Nintendo 64 systems and NEC's TurboGrafx. Initially, about 30 games (usually $5 to $10) will be available, including The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario 64. Games are saved on SD memory cards, which can also be used to import digital pictures.
• Built-in high-speed Net connectivity (including WiFi) lets Wii gather news and weather updates, plus messages from other Wii owners.
In the game-system battle, Wii "is a wild card," says DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole. "Is it going to be so unique that people are going to really rush and buy it — or be leery?"

To coincide with the official announcement of the Japanese and American release of the Wii, Nintendo has compiled a bountiful trailer of the launch titles set to hit the system.
Among the expected Zelda footage and crazy Japanese games (Wii-orchestra conducting, anyone?) comes a very brief snapshot of the new Biohazard: Umbrella Chronicles, which we revealed yesterday. Blink and you WILL miss it!
Yet throughout all this preview goodness, perhaps the most interesting part is seeing just how silly people look playing the Wii-sports games.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, has revealed details of the Wii interface, dubbed Wii Channels.
While Nintendo has already unveiled details on software and hardware pricing for the Wii, Fils-Aime has shed light on non-gaming features, while talking up the concept of "games for the masses"
"Wii reinvents games for the devoted player," says Fils-Aime at a press event in New York.
"But more importantly, Wii breaks the wall separating players from non-players by delivering the best game experiences for the most affordable price."
"We believe the next leap is games for the masses - young and old, gamer or non, alone, with a friend or with the whole family," he added.
The Wii Channel Menu is the access point for all the consoles' functions, allowing users to pick and play games, upload and store photos, and create playable cariactures.
Users are able to create their own avatar using the 'Mii' channel, which can then be stored in the Wii remote control and imported into games.
As well as being able to access news and weather reports which are updated through the WiiConnect24 service, users are also able to send and receive messages to other Wii units as well as mobile phones.
A dedicated channel for internet access is also featured, where users can browse the web using the Wii remote.
As well as downloadable software from the N64, NES and SNES back catalogue, the Wii will also be backwards compatible with the entire GameCube catalogue, allowing players to use original GameCube discs.

The Nintendo Wii will launch in the US November 19th, priced just under US$ 250 (197 euros / GBP 133) and will come bundled with a copy of the game Wii Sports.
Japanese consumers will have to wait an extra two weeks for the launch on December 2nd, but the console will retail slightly cheaper, at 25,000 Yen (167 euros / GBP 113), without a copy of Wii Sports.
Japan will see 16 titles at launch and will range in price from 4800 Yen (32 euro / GBP 22) to 6800 Yen (46 euro / GBP 31). 25 titles are purported to be available at launch in the US, priced around US$ 50 (39 euro / GBP 27)

Around 30 games will initially be available to download from the Virtual Console service, including titles from the Mario, Zelda, R-Type and Donkey Kong franchises.

The console itself will come with the motion-sensitive remote controller and 'nunchaku' thumb-stick attachment, with additional controllers costing 3800 Yen (24 euro / GBP 17) and 1800 Yen (12 euro / GBP 8) respectively.

If you were wondering what the Kingdom Hearts team has been working on since development on Kingdom Hearts II finished up, here it is. Square Enix has announced an original new game for the DS. Titled "It's a Wonderful World," this game is being developed by the Kingdom Hearts team and Tetsuya Nomura.
It's a Wonderful World is set in real world Japan. The game takes place primarily in Tokyo's trendy Shibuya region and features famous locations like Scramble Crossing (according to some reports, the most heavily trafficked crosswalk in the world) and the 109 shopping mall (reportedly the most financially successful shopping mall in the world).
You play as Neku, a boy who has the ability to read the hearts of others. Neku meets a young girl named Tsuki while walking through the streets. The two end up in Shibuya and are forced to play a mysterious game.
While gameplay details are scarce at this point, it's known that the title has a battle system in which Neku and Tsuki face off against attacking monsters. You control separate battles that take place simultaneously on the top and bottom screens. How this is done is being kept under wraps for now, but you'll have to master this system, as the individual battles have an effect on one-another.
Details on It's a Wonderful World should be forthcoming in a few days as the Tokyo Game Show approaches. Stay tuned!

The last time Square Enix uttered the words Final Fantasy and "sequel," we got Final Fantasy X-2 for the PS2. This time, DS owners get the fun all to themselves as a Final Fantasy XII follow-up makes its way to the Nintendo portable.
Following double platinum sales in Japan (and just prior to its US release) Square Enix has announced a Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings for the DS. This title puts players in the role of FFXII's main character Vaan in a story about air pirates. Vaan's chick, Panello, also makes an appearance as a character whom Vaan works to protect.
Aside from these rough details, little is known about the game. Vaan and Panello look young in comparison to their FFXII counterparts, suggesting that the story takes place years prior to the events of the PS2 epic.
We expect more details to surface as the Tokyo Game Show rolls around next week.

CraigT posted this news about his upcoming Spectrum emulator for the DS:
I have discovered a new definition for the word frustration. It goes by the name of a sound ring-buffer.
Driving the sound on the DS is pretty straightforward. Its simply a case of setting up a sound channel and pointing it to a buffer that holds your sound data. This works perfectly for playing pre-defined samples. However, when attempting to stream sound data by creating and playing samples continuously the DS starts struggle. This causes popping and cracking in the sound.
One method to get around this problem is the use of a ‘ring-buffer’. The theory involves creating an empty sample that is played in a continuous loop. The current play position of this empty sample is tracked using a timer. When a new section of sound data needs to be played it is mixed into the empty sample just ahead of the current play posision.
As far as the hardware is concerned, it is just playing one sample over and over again, but it means that it is posible to alter the sample with the new data being streamed in.
The theory doesn’t sound too bad. It is, however, very dependent on timing. If the new sound data is mixed in too slowly, the play position of the buffer will catch up and eventually override the newly mixed data. If the new sound data is mixed in too quickly, the mix position will wrap around the buffer and override the data currently being played.
I have had major problems getting the timing to be perfect. I must have redesigned and wrote the sound code 6 or 7 times over the last few weeks without any real success.
Anyway, on Monday I had a bit of free time so a sat down and rewrote it again from scratch. Its the closest i’ve been so far, and sounds pretty good. The mix position is still running slightly quicker than the play position, but if it runs too far forward I skip a sample until it catches up. This can cause the odd scratch in the sound, but it only appears noticable when playing a fixed tone (using the BASIC beep command for example).
This whole problem does indicate that either the CPU core is running too fast or the sound is running too slow. At the moment I think its good enough to put into the first release and am going to move back to the file browser. Once i’ve cleaned it up a bit I think we are looking good for a release of Version 0.1.

Another update from the coder of the C&C clone for DS:
I've not really worked on the project for the last few days, but after the funeral tommorrow I'll likely have more time again. I've worked on it very slightly, though it was in a totally different area - tech trees. Doesn't help at all in my current goal of loading and scrolling around in a big map, but it was an easy little bit to code and I felt like it ;p The tech tree foundation is there now anyway, and should allow all sorts of lovely techtrees, either for C&C or any other RTS.
Anyway I'll have a better update next time, promise. Felt like I should post this mostly because I'm in the habit of posting every few days now ;p
