While it's bad news that the Wii won't be region-free, we hope that these new snaps will lift your spirits. An anonymous tipster just sent us five photographs of the Wii developer kit, and we only have one thing to ask our friends at Nintendo: did ours fall off the back of a FedEx truck? Seriously though, we know that developer kits come in colors that the public never gets, but perhaps Nintendo could one day take a page out of Apple's playbook and charge a premium for this snazzy green -- it is, after all, the color of money.

Nintendo UK has admitted that the Wii console is region-locked after all, despite comments from Nintendo of America to the contrary.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz in London this afternoon, a spokesperson admitted, "We are region-locked," and said the US arm of the company had made a mistake in saying otherwise.
Earlier we reported on a piece by Wired News, which spoke to Nintendo vice president of marketing Perrin Kaplan during yesterday's showcase event in New York, during which they were told that Nintendo would not impose regional restrictions on game software.
That situation would have been comparable to that of Xbox 360, where some games are region-free but others are not, and gamers are generally left to find out for themselves whether an import is viable.
Nintendo also admitted yesterday that it had ruled out the idea of including DVD playback functionality, contradicting earlier announcements.
"Because the price of DVD players has dropped so much and they have become so commonplace, Nintendo saw no need to create extra hardware options that would drive up the cost for consumers," a representative for the company told GameSpot.
Previously Nintendo had said it would release an attachment for the Wii console that enabled DVD playback.
Games on the system will be sold on single- or double-layered 12-centimetre optical discs, while it will also be compatible with 8-centimetre GameCube discs.
Still confusion reigns supreme over region free or not

Nintendo UK has confirmed the pricing for Wii points - the magical currency that will buy you Virtual Console games through Wii's shopping channel.
In Europe, it turns out, 2000 Wii points will cost you EUR 20 or GBP 14, and you can expect to be able to buy them on cards through retailers, and using your credit card online.
Games will cost the same amount of points worldwide - 500 points for NES games, 800 points for Super Nintendo games, and 1000 for Nintendo 64 - and apparently other titles (SEGA, TurboGrafx) will be decided soon.
However the cost of the cards will vary. In the US, 2000 Wii points will cost US$ 20.

When the Wii launches November 19, it will enjoy more third-party support than any console launch in recent memory. Publishers seem to love how easy the system is to develop for, and they like the plan of action Nintendo is taking (no small part of which is ensnaring more customers for them). Below are statements from third-parties who are busy readying games for the launch of the little Wii that could.
"I believe the Wii will attract new and casual gamers to the world of interactive entertainment. It's a fun, easy and economical system that will become a bridge to gaming for mainstream audiences. At EA, we are putting more support behind the Wii than any Nintendo hardware launch since the Super NES."
- Larry Probst, Chairman and CEO, Electronic Arts
"The Wii is changing audience interaction, opening up whole new experiences that have never been possible in video games. With the instinctual control of the Wii Remote, Nintendo is advancing the gaming experience to the broadest audience of gamers. Activision is excited about the launch of the Wii and the opportunity it offers. So much so, we plan to have five titles available at launch - our strongest lineup ever for a new console. We have more development resources devoted to the Wii than to any previous Nintendo platform. The Wii is likely to have a profound impact on the size, growth and overall opportunities for the video game market."
- Robert Kotick, Chairman and CEO, Activision, Inc.
"The Wii control scheme opens up unexplored areas for our talented teams to innovate when creating games. It's invigorating for us. We believe that it will help create a new level of interest in video games and engage more players around the world."
- Laurent DeToc, President of Ubisoft North America
"Nintendo's strategy is expanding the market. We are thrilled."
- David Pierce, President and CEO, Atari, Inc.
"Nintendo's vision perfectly aligns with our strategy to broaden our portfolio by allowing us to create new genres that have strong global appeal."
- Shinichi Suzuki, President, Atlus U.S.A., Inc.
"Video games are becoming more of a mainstream phenomenon than ever before with virtually all members of the family playing different games in the living room. Nintendo's strategy of ease of play and mass marketing pricing is perfectly aligned with Disney."
- Graham Hopper, Senior Vice President and General
Manager, Buena Vista Games
"In order for our industry to continue to grow, we've got to think about gaming and games differently. That's exactly what Nintendo is doing."
- Geoff Mulligan, COO, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
"For established publishers, the Virtual Console model is a tremendous opportunity to extend our classic brands. Nobody ever thinks of a good book as retired - why shouldn't great games live forever, too?"
- Naoya Tsurumi, CEO, Sega of America
"With escalating costs for both developing games and for consumers buying new game systems, we applaud Nintendo's drive to spread gaming to the masses - and we fully support that approach."
- Brian Farrell, President and CEO, THQ, Inc.

News from Spong
There was much talk at ExCel today of how Wii is being marketed at those people who might not usually use the Internet very often. You know, like your gran and those without the cash to own a PC less than ten years old.
Nintendo, in a seemingly paternalistic role, plans to help the elderly, the stupid and the poor by bringing the Internet to somewhere they can understand. Their telly!
And what's more, it plan to do it in a way in which the elderly and the poor really love. By not charging them the money they need for their gas meters and their Kwik Save ready meals.
Wii Internet Channel, if you don't know already, is Opera-based and is described by Nintendo thus: "This channel dramatically changes the relationship between a user's home, the television and the Internet. Users download the Opera browser with Wii points. Then they can surf the Internet right from the comfort of their couch. They can do quick research while watching a television program ('What was that actor's name again?'). Or book travel plans and shop during commercials. The service is compatible with Macromedia Flash."
Note that Opera will be free to download on Wii, until June 2007, but after that there's been no confirmation on what Nintendo plans to do with its idiot-proof Tellynet. As ever, we'll let you know as soon as we hear more.

Article from Kotaku
If you are Canadian, be happy to know that you will be getting exactly the same Wii as your Yankee brethren. But what about pricing? While American and Japan have a nice symmetry with US $250 and 25,000 yen, Nintendo of Canada is charging CA $279.95. And how much is that in American money? It's exactly US $250.24, which will put a stop to any border-crossing Wii raids. Damn them.

Nintendo's new console swings into Down Under on December 7th and will retail for AU $399.95 (US $300.60). As with America, the Wii will be bundled with Wii Sports. We tried to look at the country's Wii site to get more launch details (imagine they can't be too different), but the site appears to be on the fritz. Blame the Australians.

Article via Kotaku
I was really surprised by both Nintendo's choice of price and date. Initially, I thought that the company would try to launch a good month before Sony broke the Champaign bottle on the SS PS3, getting a mighty lead on their competition. And I figured they'd try to put just as much distance between the price of the two consoles as well.
But why should they?
They don't have to give the Wii away to win, they just need to be cheaper and offer up a good value. The console comes with a game, which I suspect would have sold for $40 not $50 if it hit the market separately, so that already knocks the price of the console down to $210. And Nintendo price was most likely determined by Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360. They just needed to release their console at a substantial discount and when they saw the price of their competition they realized they could actually sell the console at a profit, and still deliver a value compared to what has become today's standard for console pricing.
The date, well, the date just makes sense when you think about it.
All of this talk about Nintendo being a third console has sort of lulled me, and I suspect others, into thinking that Nintendo is the also ran, the other guy, a company knowingly making a console that no one is going to buy as their primary gaming rig.
Guess what? Nintendo doesn't think that way. Just because their mascots are cartoons doesn't mean that the company isn't out for blood. And this proves it.
Nintendo isn't just OK with people comparing the PS3 with the Wii, they want people to. They set the launch right on top of Sony's because they think they will win that comparison. And they don't just want to slip a knife in Sony's belly, they want to twist it a bit.
Check out what Reggie Fils-Aime was saying after the press conference: Consumers "can go take out a second mortgage and buy our competition's console, or they can buy ours."
I still think that Nintendo is taking a big risk injecting this disruptive technology into the gaming market, but I've gone from thinking that they will either sink or swim to thinking that they will do moderately well to tremendously well.
Do you agree or disagree with what the article says ?

News via Gamesradar
Nintendo has announced the prices of the first wave of accessories for Wii, its new console that will launch on 8 December in the UK.
A new Wii-mote will set you back £30, while the Nunchuck attachment - which isn't used for every game - and the Virtual Console's Classic Controller will both be priced at £15.
£45 for another Wii-mote and Nunchuck to get your friends involved in the world of Wii multiplayer is an eye-opening price tag, and one that wouldn't seem to fit with Nintendo's all-inclusive and mainstream-courting plans.
The Nunchuck, though, isn't needed for every game, and Nintendo's own Wii Play will actually include an extra Wii-mote. But if £45 seems steep to gamers, it's likely to look a hell of a lot more expensive to the hordes of non-gamers that Nintendo is desperate to win over.
On a lighter note, here's the full list of contents in the UK's Wii package:
Wii console
Wii-mote, with wrist strap
Nunchuck attachment
Wii stand
Wii stand plate
Wii sensor bar
Sensor bar stand
AC adapter
Stereo AV cable
AA battery
Wii Sports (with Wii Tennis, Wii Golf, Wii Baseball, Wii Boxing and Wii Bowling)

Article from Gamespot
Source: The hopes and dreams of Nintendo fans everywhere and, more specifically, Wired News.
What we heard: Gamers hoping to flail about while playing the latest Japanese-only games on their US Wiis take note: Nintendo's next-gen console appears to be region-free.
The question of whether or not gamers will be able to play imported games on the upcoming console has been looming for quite some time now, with Nintendo neither confirming nor denying the feature. The company embraced region-free gaming with the Nintendo DS but has been evasive when asked if the Wii would follow suit.
However, today among the heavy stream of Wii news, Wired News said Nintendo of America VP of marketing and corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan had finally confirmed that the console will indeed be region-free--in theory.
"Will the Wii be region-free? Yes. Like the Nintendo DS, the Wii will be able to play games from other regions, such as Japan, without any restriction. Kaplan implied there might be a region lock that publishers would be able to flip on, but it doesn't sound like the first-party titles from Nintendo will be restricted."
Nintendo still has yet to make a wide, media-friendly announcement on the subject. Hyping a feature such as region-free gaming would seem to be a no-brainer, so the company's coy stance raised concerns. Even the article's author seemed a bit skeptical with a careful choice of words: "Kaplan implied there might be a region lock that publishers would be able to flip on, but it doesn't sound like the first-party titles from Nintendo will be restricted."
The official story: Getting answers from Nintendo proved difficult during one of the company's busiest days of the year. However, after a lengthy exchange of cryptic e-mails, a rep finally confirmed that Kaplan's words regarding regionless first-party titles and potentially regionless third-party titles were indeed correct: "[The] Wii will be region-free."
Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus.

Sam & Max developer Telltale Games would apparently love to bring the detective duo to Nintendo Wii.
According to a report on Worthplaying, the dev's CEO Dan Connors spoke about how Sam & Max would be well-suited to Wii at last month's Penny Arcade Expo 2006. Telltale designer/author Heather Logas also chipped in, saying more or less that the Wii controller would be great for adventure games.
However, apparently Sam & Max's possible appearance on Wii all hangs on Nintendo giving it the thumbs up. We can only wait and see if the Japanese giant does just that.
Sam & Max first appeared in point and click adventure Hit the Road on PC, courtesy of LucasArts, the humour-laden game proving highly popular. Telltale's Sam & Max venture resurrects the dog and rabbit detective pair and is an episodic affair, Episode 1 in a six-episode season debuting for PC next month.

Bundle includes Wii Sports, with Zelda available at launch.
Nintendo Wii will launch in Europe on December 8th 2006 and cost EUR 249 / GBP 179, Nintendo announced during a conference in London this afternoon.
The bundle will be the same as in America, with one Wii remote, one Nunchuk and a copy of Wii Sports included.
Wii Play (the mini-games package that includes a bundled Wii remote) and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess will both be there at launch from Nintendo, to be followed shortly after by WarioWare: Smooth Moves.
Nintendo predicts around 15 to 20 games at the European launch, mostly from third-parties, with Red Steel, Rayman: Raving Rabbids, Need For Speed: Carbon, Cars, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz all set for launch.
Games will retail for between EUR 49 and 59 (GBP 34 and 39). Accessories will also be available - Wii remotes will cost EUR 39 / GBP 29, Nunchuks will cost EUR 19 / GBP 14, and the Classic Controller will cost EUR 19 / GBP 14.
Virtual Console will also be available, offering 15 titles during the European launch period, with 5-10 titles added each month thereafter from previous Nintendo consoles along with SEGA systems and TurboGrafx.
Virtual Console games that appeared on-screen included Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario 64 and Donkey Kong. Exact pricing of VC titles was not discussed during the conference.
What we did get was Satoru Iwata delivering the same sort of demonstration of Wii Channels that America and Japan enjoyed yesterday, along with a Wii Sports tennis demonstration involving British tennis players Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski.

At a UK press conference today, Nintendo revealed it expects sales of its DS handheld to reach 10 million units in Europe by the end of 2006.
According to Nintendo, six million DS units have been sold in the region so far, with more than 100,000 consistently sold every week.
The company boasts that the DS has held 70 per cent of the handheld market share for eleven consecutive weeks.
"Nintendo has always sought to innovate and produce games and consoles that appeal to everyone irrespective of age or experience," said Laurent Fischer, European marketing director for Nintendo.
"The Nintendo DS has done just this and been a phenomenal success, along with the Touch! Generation range that has expanded the gaming audience by providing something for everyone no matter who they are," he added.
Pet-sim Nintendogs has been a star performer, selling over four million units in the region, and shifting 60,000 units a week.
Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old is Your Brain has sold faster in Europe than it has in Japan, with 700,000 copies sold in the region so far.
Nintendo continues to promote and repackage the console, with a pink DS Lite due on sale October 27th.
