Gamestop, EB Games, and Amazon have all updated their websites with what appears to be official Wii box art (i.e. no "for display purposes only"). If legit, the asymmetric white bar looks top-heavy like it wants to roll right. That's a long-winded way of saying it looks ugly, subjectively speaking.
I can only imagine, however, that some fancy shmancy branding agency helped Nintendo design the new box art and starting asking all these "Who am I?" questions for the Wii to answer. The ad group then determined that Wii provides a different take on gaming and decided an asymmetric box design should be used as well.
So does Wii box art succeed in reflecting Nintendo's new take on console gaming? Do you dig the look?

Business Week explores what could be an industry altering effect if Wii delivers on motion-sensing innovation and non-gamer adoption optimism. In addition to a general comparison to both Sony's PS3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360, the piece discusses Wii's alternative appeal, recent success of the DS, and how investors like Nintendo's chances. From the article:
"[Nintendo's] stock is up 74% since April, and its quarterly results released in July were robust thanks to the DS ... It's definitely going to be a World of Warcraft moment in the game-console market when the Wii, PS3, and Xbox are all competing for consumers' hearts and dollars, euros, or yen. A particularly strong showing by Nintendo may signal that reaching new gamers is more about ease of use than processor muscle and high-end graphics. If so, the Wii could be a game changer."
Assuming Nintendo can translate hard-core, casual, and non-gamer success of the DS to Wii, will Nintendo have the console hit they're hoping for? Or will it take more than a consolized DS for Wii to meet Nintendo's expectations?

Just in case there was still a hope fleeting through that last ounce of grey matter that Nintendo UK's David Yarnton was drunkenly ranting over a pint about the Wii not being region-free, you can officially dash it.
According to Nintendo of America — the same guys who told Wired last week that region-free Wii was a certainty — comes an official correction.
"Wii will be region encoded by territory."
Which I'm sure is excellent news for all the people who pre-ordered an Asiatic Wii via Lik Sang seconds after Perrin Kaplan randomly blurted out a complete lie.

The Guardian reports that the publicity spiralling from Chris Tarrant's alleged affairs has spurred a surge in sales for both the DS Lite and Professor Kawashima's Brain Training: How Old Is Your Brain? which the permatanned Who Wants to Be... presenter advertises.
One particular advert depicted Tarrant forgetting his wedding anniversary and getting kicked out by his wife, only to use the game to improve his memory skills. Obviously this particular scenario rang true for countless husbands across the nation, resulting in mass Brain Training to avoid similar marital situations.
The Guardian quoted a source saying that Nintendo is fully aware of the situation and 'very relaxed' about Tarrant's private life, with a spokeswoman confirming there are no plans to axe the million pound campaign.
Meanwhile, rumours of a potential sequel 'Professor Tarrant's Brain Training: How to Avoid Getting Caught' are believed to be unfounded.

We recently bombarded you with shots of Sonic's Wii-adventure which had tiny little diagrams of how to control the boisterous blue rodent... and they didn't give away much. These new images follow a similar diagrammatical vein, although this batch actually gives some indication of how the game will be played.
From what we can see, it appears that by holding the controller horizontally you steer the hedgehog as seen in plane-sim Wing Island, tilting the Wii-mote to angle the direction Sonic takes as he pelts along.
We'll let you know when we do whether this control scheme is effective enough to make the sharp-turns and speedy-runs that are typical of the Sonic series soon

Atlus's surgical-sim Trauma Center has endeared itself to many a DS-gamer with its innovative stitch-'em-up gameplay, so we wait with baited breath for its debut on the Wii console.
To stave your lust to virtually suture wounds with a remote control, have a glance downwards and check out 21 new screens of the game in action. From what we can tell, things look pretty familiar although as a 'Wii-make' of the DS hit, it's to be expected.
Trauma Center: Second Opinion is scheduled for a November 19 release in America. No news as yet whether it will come out in time for the Christmas rush in Europe.

More WIP news:
I looked at this last night and most of the bugs were in the PC version dealing with the tilemaps. I fixed that and then started looking at how I would hold all this info in memory. My current plan is to use one tilemap in the VRAM and use the rest to store graphics. The C&C maps are much bigger than one tilemap block however, but I will be storing the actual C&C tilemap in system memory. This will be as big as memory will allow. The C&C tilemap will point to and index of C&C tile blocks, these are like mini 3x3 tilemaps. (A native C&C tile is 24x24 pixels, while DS tiles are 8x8. So it's 3x3 DS tiles to make one C&C tile). I will then copy over the correct tiles to the DS tilemap as needed from the C&C tilemap in system memory. Whenever a scroll happens it will update the DS tilemap from the master C&C tilemap. If I begin to run out of space in VRAM for C&C tile graphics it would be in this scroll that I would swap tile graphics in memory to let me render everything I need. Hopefully this should be pretty quick, especially if I predict what tiles I need ahead of time and do a maximum of one tile graphics swap per frame for example.
I'm hoping the C&C tilemaps can get pretty big. Red Alert maps are typically these sizes: 64x64 (32kb), 96x96 (72kb), 126x64 (about 63kb), and 64x126. That is using 8bits for each tile cell. ( http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homep...ke/cells.html). This doesn't take into account anything else for the map, like objects, buildings, triggers etc. but just the terrain graphics layer.
This will give a limit of 256 unique C&C tiles per map, which I hope will be enough. If it's not I may have to just byte the bullet and use more memory, but we'll see.
Ok I hope most of this makes sense! It may not be the best approach, but I want to free as much VRAM memory as possible for graphics. I need to cram a lot of sprites in there too!
I had some screenies to bring in today but I forgot - sorry guys hopefully I'll have them tommorow.

Since my find last week of the Snes emulator for the Nintendo DS by archeide which i was stunned to find out was posted back in July, i posted the news but didnt even see that. Well obviously since i posted the news and the many websites that check here and post news i post, the coder has returned to the project, so well done to everyone for showing an interest, remember all coders want feedback on any release they make.
Anyway yesterday i sent an email to archeide and he informed me via email that he has released a Very Alpha new version of his Snes emulator for the Nintendo DS, heres the part of the email that explains this new version:
.THis emulator has buggy support for ROMs with size > 2Mo. I know it's buggy so i just wanted to see how many roms where working. I succeeded to play some part of terranigma, ff3, dkc (but not chronotrigger). But I just have a small amount of roms, so i need testers with other roms.
You can put this version as a news, but explain that this is a very alpha version and that the ROMs must be put in the root directory, not the SNES directory like the official version.
Thanks to archeide for this release and the email .

Today BioWare, crafter of fine RPGs, announced the formation of a new handheld game development group. Its first game will be a Nintendo DS title and is the company's first foray into portable gaming.
Unsurprisingly, BioWare isn't quite ready to divulge any details about the title. However, its job listings say the company is looking to immediately hire an Art Director and Principal Lead Designer for the new handheld group. Among the Principal Lead Designer's preferred skills are "experience in the design of successful games targeted at the Japanese market," and "experience/passion for Japanese games." Also of note: "Familiarity with the fantasy genre and role-playing games is a must."
The group will be led by project director Dan Tudge, former president and founder of independent developer Exile Interactive. Under his watch, Exile was responsible for a handful of sport titles, including MTV Sports: T.J. Lavin's Ultimate BMX for PlayStation, World Series Baseball 2K2 for Dreamcast, and Nintendo Pennant Chase Baseball for GameCube.
"As always, we are committed to creating the best story-driven games in the world, and the Nintendo DS offers us an exciting new platform to engage," said Greg Zeschuk, president of BioWare. "The new project offers tremendous opportunities, and we're looking for talented and passionate developers to become part of that."

News from Nuudles:
So about a month ago I started working on my first homebrew DS project. Unfortunately, I don't have very much free time at all, so I haven't worked on it altogether too much. I've basically been trying to port Frequency for the PS2 to the DS. Recently, it came to my attention that another coder has been coding AmplituDS so, I've decided to go ahead and announce my project in the hopes that maybe we could help each other out work kinks / get ideas that we have both experienced.
So here is my first release. We'll call it 0.00001alpha because it doesn't work all that well.
0.00001alpha features:
Loads any MOD file right now (rename the file as test.mod in the root of your FAT card)
Loads note information from a WAM file (rename the file as test.wam in the root of your FAT card)
Authentic Frequency Octagon spiffiness
Uses the latest version of Chishm's FAT library, so it should support any of his supported cards (I only have a SuperCard SD and a SuperCard Lite to test, and only the SD works)
Right now, the whole song plays throughout the whole thing because I haven't debugged the muting/unmuting of the different channels yet.
0.00001alpha problems:
The whole thing gets out of sync relatively soon (this probably has a way with my speed calculation)
No point system yet
No powerup system yet
Couldn't get the Alpha system to work very well yet, so no spiffy track translucencies (for cleared tracks)
I had problems loading larger IT files to test with. The included MOD and WAM files work fine.

A group of hackers attacked Nintendo WiFi at roughly 7:50 EST, and since then the high score / leader boards have been down. Rumors say that the hackers have stated that they only wish for Nintendo to implement better security.
As far as i know some other kind folks outed the hacker but the leader boards are down.

A Dragon Quest title with an odd twist, Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime is an action-adventure game starring one of the most popular monsters from the Dragon Quest series of games. Set in the kingdom of Slimenia, players must take over as Rocket and defend the land from an invading force known as "the Plob." Reviews for the game have been fairly positive:
IGN - 85%: "It's technically sound and solid in its gameplay, though it remains to be a primarily one-button game on a system with six buttons and a touch screen, which may baffle a few people starting out. Even still, the development team over at Square Enix made the right move, as Rocket Slime works great as a top-view adventure game that, quite frankly, doesn't need elaborate controls or touch-screen gameplay to make it fun."
1Up - 85%: "Rocket Slime seems an unlikely candidate for the level of greatness it demonstrates. But between its genuinely clever elements and its preposterously over-the-top ridiculousness, Square Enix and TOSE have crafted a spin-off that captures the appeal of the source material in an amusing and unique way."
RPG Gamer - 70%: "The gameplay is fun, the visuals are nice, and the game's original. The interface issues hold it back a lot, though, and the repetitive music certainly doesn't help. Rocket Slime is still likely to entertain those looking for something original, or pretty much anyone for that matter, but the game is by no means epic or without flaw."
In being an original, different take on a well-established franchise, is the game able to entertain new and old fans alike? What do you guys and gals think of Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime?
