Opera on the DS always looked almost completely unusable to me, so I was a bit skeptical about the announcement that Opera would be the browser of choice for the Wii.
Amazingly, though, this video of the Wii's internet channel looks just amazingly slick and easy to use. The zooming function is butter smooth; I love the way the cursor automatically leaps between links. Flash works extremely well. It all looks great.
But does anyone notice something missing from this video? No, not how the Wii handles porn. Like, how text entry will work? I assume it'll be done by soft keyboard, but I think almost everyone knows that will be pretty nightmarish. And letter recognition is similarly problematic.
I assume that's the worst part of using the Wii to browse on the internet, and it bodes ill that Nintendo's trying to hide it in their video.

I suspect Jones Soda Co's Fufu Berry Soda featuring Samus from Metroid Prime Hunters is probably just a label-job by some fans (I couldn't find this on the Jones website), but it' still pretty cool. It would be neat it they started selling it. It's got to taste better than that god-awful Final Fantasy Potion.

For Nintendo's hardcore fans, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime is more than just a spokesperson for the company they adore, he's a general leading them into the next-gen console war.
Reggie will hand out the first Wii consoles in NYC.
Nintendophiles will have a chance to get up close and personal with their leader, Fils-Aime told ABC News. In an interview with the program, the man known simply as "Reggie" said he would be handing out some of the first Wiis at a New York store on November 19, the day the console goes on sale in North America.
"Those consumers, the core gamer, are very important to us," Reggie said. "And you know what? I'll be at a store in the New York area, where they will camp out and I will be handing out some Wiis that very first minute that we're available for purchase."
The store Fils-Aime refers to is likely the Nintendo World Store in Times Square, which has played host to other Nintendo events in the past.
Reggie used the network-television time to hawk the system to the mainstream crowd.
"Our focus with a mass market game [console], was to have a mass market price, and a mass market collection of software, and we think we've done that."
The mass market price comes with some caveats, as the console won't have some of the multimedia perks that Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 have. But that doesn't bother Fils-Aime.
"There are some choices that we made in the development in order to achieve that price point. There's no DVD playback capability. And our thinking is most consumers have about 5 different [DVD players] in their house. Our games are not high-definition. Again our thinking is HD penetration is [only] about 15 percent of households."
The current generation of systems clearly had a winner--the PlayStation 2. While many try and predict who will be this generation's champ, Fils-Aime doesn't think there will be gold, silver, and bronze medals. However, he's not content to simply share the spotlight.
"In order for me to win, must they fail? I don't think so, because they're trying to do something very different," he said. "But our goal is to be the leader in this industry."

1up is running a piece looking back at the ten years since the N64's launch. The start of Nintendo's slump, the N64 still managed to come out of the console wars with some great and lasting memories, like GoldenEye, Smash Bros., and Ocarina of Time. From the article:
"Nintendo certainly gave players plenty of time to get all 120 stars. By the end of 1996, the N64 still had fewer than a dozen games, and even that anemic library was glutted with mediocrity like Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Cruis'n USA. Sure, there were gems like Mario Kart 64 and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, and there was the stubborn optimism of Nintendo of America President Howard Lincoln (who insisted N64 games sold more than 250,000 per title), but industry commentators were starting to see through the emperor's clothes. Meanwhile, Sony was turning up the heat with massive blockbusters like Final Fantasy VII."
What were your Favourite N64 Games ?

These will include DS releases of highly anticipated RPG Contact, Ys Strategy and New Zealand Story.
PSP titles covered under the deal include Pilot Academy from Kuju's Sheffield studio, and Bubble Bobble Evolution.
"Codemasters relishes the opportunity to work with Rising Star Games in the UK," said Jonathan Hales, vice president of sales for Codemasters.

With pre-orders for Nintendo Wii now mostly live, some of you might be considering chucking away your old GameCube stuff - well, don't.
Because a report citing Nintendo's US PR firm Golin Harris claim that WaveBirds and GameCube controllers can be used with all Cube games on the Wii, and even select Wii disc games.
The WaveBirds still need to use their receiver plug-ins, which apparently slot into the top of the console.
The report, which comes from Nintendojo, also claims that Nintendo has yet to detail compatibility between Virtual Console titles and Cube controllers, but should release more details closer to launch.

Archeide has posted a new release of SNEmulDS!
SNEmulDS 0.2 changes are :
- Support for ROMs bigger than 2 Mo (size of ROM is not limited)
- Speed improvement (+30-40%)
- Load / Save states (*). You can save up to 8 states by game. Games are stored in SNEmul file format (SML) in the SNES directory, along with the SNES ROM.
- Fixed most scrolling bugs
- Load / Save SNES SRAM (*). SRAM is read from a "XXXX.SRM" file put in the SNES directory, along with the SNES ROM. SRAM has to be saved manually using the "Save SRAM" option in the main menu.
- New "No Vblank" mode which is by default enabled. This mode allow much faster emulation speed, and can fix some graphical problems, but can also bring other issues.
- Fixed initial crashes due to "strange" filenames in SNES directory.
- Fixed many other bugs, improved memory consumption.
(*) Saving is experimental due to the limitations of the FAT libraries.
Like the initial release (0.1), ROMs are loaded from the SNES directory in your card.
Via Pocketheaven
Looks impressive! And Secret of Mana works nice, besides the world map on Flammie. Though, it should be fixed in the future.

Foaming at the mouth like your mother at the idea of attending a Bruce Springsteen concert, Japanese gamers can't get enough of these special edition DS Lites, let alone another Pokemon game.

In an interview with ABC News, Nintendo of America's head of sales and marketing, the now infamous Reggie Fils-Aime, confirmed that he'll be on-hand to dish out day one Wii hardware, in news that will come as a joyous and heavenly calling to Photoshop owning games enthusiasts across the globe.
It's expected that Nintendo's launch event - currently secret, though likely to be at NOA's flagship store in New York City - will see Reggie dishing up Wii sets to those braving the elements on the night of launch, something of a wonderful tradition games fans have maintained across every major hardware launch for well over a decade.
Americans can pick up their Wiis from Reggie if they have a thick enough coat and a decent Thermos on November 19. We'll have a man on site with a camera. You'll have to do the photoshopping yourself, though...

Microsoft's Peter Moore must have been on the shandies last night X06 post-conference party as he's clearly on form the day after.
When we asked if Moore sees the Wii as a competitor or compliment to Xbox 360, he told CVG, "I've gone on record any times in the past as being an admirer of the innovation Nintendo brings and the infamous Wii60 revolution seems to be growing like a trade union. You can buy a 360 and Wii and still have 50 quid spare.
"The question for gamers will be 'is owning a 360 enough of an experience?' I can see dual platform ownership (depending on the country) as high as 40 percent, 360 and Wii. But it's all speculative as both Sony and Nintendo have yet to even release their consoles. We'll have to wait and see what the consumer thinks. How innovative your shoulder feels after an hour, we'll have to see."
He added, "The Wii looks like a unique experience and I say even Nintendo doesn't know what they have on their hands yet."

News from Lik Sang

After we started off the new Pokémon season of games with our Pokémon Festival last week, today we are bringing you the gist of just released Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. In an interview with Japanese videogame mag Famitsu, the father (co-creator) of the Pokémon phenomenon, Tsunekazu Ishihara (thanks to Famitsu for the image), said that he considers these two games as the ultimate Pokémon versions. Why so, you might ask? For one thing, all sorts of new Pokémon have been included. You might wanna sit down for the next one: in Diamond and Pearl, you'll be able to transfer your hard-trained creatures from earlier GBA games Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Fire Red, Leaf Green and Emerald! There will be online battling and trading via Nintendo DS Wi-Fi connection, as well as online voice chat. Later on this year, even link up your NDS system to the Nintendo Wii (wirelessly of course!) and bring all your beloved 2D-born characters to life in magnificient 3D on the big screen!

We are happy to say that both Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are in stock for NDS and pre-orders are being taken care of. New orders are certainly very welcome for only US$ 54.90 each (shipped!). As with all import games on Lik-Sang.com, Free Shipping Worldwide applies to these titles as well of course. Both games will play perfectly on any Nintendo DS system globally, as the handheld console is 100% region-free. In Japan, a special NDS edition to honor the release of these titles is sadly limited to purchases at the Pokémon Center. While we have done our utmost to secure some of those beauties for Lik Sang customers, it appears limited edition equals very limited in this case alas. At least the image shown can be clicked for a larger version. In case we'll get lucky still for some of those unique systems, we'll put them up in our NDS Hardware section.
Facts and Tidbits
The game features a new region called Shino and you'll begin in the starter town Futaba. Face both Pre-Evolutions and Evolutions of old Pokémon in Diamond and Pearl plus there will be new type combinations as well. Visual presentation differs betweeen female and male Pokémon, sprites have been crafted accordingly to account for various gender versions.
Nintendo relies heavily on NDS Wi-Fi connectivity in Pokémon Diamon and Pearl. Players who explore beneath the Pokémon Center, will find a fresh Wi-Fi Club, where you can battle, exchange Pokémon and use online voice chat, which lets you and people in your Friends List communicate while fighting it out. Just input your buddies' 12 digit friend codes and you are good to go! Furthermore, the NDS can access retail download terminals (DS Stations services). The royal cherry will be delivered as soon as Pokémon Battle Revoluton is out for Wii this year: kick things off by inserting the Diamond or Pearl cartridge into your NDS and mentioned Wii game into the console. The handheld then acts as a controller where you can have your Diamond and Pearl characters clash in full 3D glory on the Wii screen. Sweet! Modes of play will include player vs player, player vs CPU and Wi-Fi.

Back to NDS gameplay: you'll be able to either go for stylus/touch screen control or the regular setup of using the hardware buttons on the handheld. Commanding your Pokémon with the stylus means directly pushing on-screen buttons on the bottom display. Game mechanics during battles are very similar to the proven formula of earlier Pokémon titles, which will make it easy for both veterans and newcomers alike to jump right into your first confrontation. A redesigned Pokédex now resembles an NDS in shape and functionality, offering dual screens and a D-Pad. Basic monster data, tools for fiddling with the Pokémon voices and comparing size and weight are all things you have access to by using the stylus. A totally new item, the Pokéwatch, has been included as well. It resembles a digital watch and its display gets shown on the bottom NDS screen. There are 20 functions, like time telling, a calculator, a camera and a creature viewing tool. Players start out with only a few basic features, you'll obtain more as you progress in the game.
This watch comes in handy, as time plays an important part in Diamond and Pearl. Dynamic cycles move between morning, afternoon, evening, night and late night. Day of time influences the chance you'll see a particular Pokémon appear, which offers a fresh strategy element here, if you are bent on catching'em all. It's Professor Nanakamado's debut, who will aid you in completing your Pokédex. A key to success is to rely on his advice heavily, as 90% of Pokémon are rumored to have evolved for Diamond and Pearl. With all the fresh features included in these fine Pokémon RPG releases, Diamond and Pearl can truly be regarded as the ultimate Pokémon experience. Fans of the series just can't miss this one, it's too big an event to pass by; if you ever dreamed of a Pokémon adventure that's nothing short of all-inclusive, then you are staring right at it. Grab your Pokéballs and let the trainer out!

More news from the Command and Conquer Clone for DS Project:
You can now enter a map and return to the main menu over and over again.. yay! I've also changed the graphics system so it's easier to tell it if you're drawing to the primary screen or the secondary screen. This sounds really minor but has a big effect on my GUI system. Still got some design desicions on how it will span two screen nicely to make.
And now for a minor rant: using WinCVS is such a pain! I've connected to the sourceforge CVS but I still don't know how to get a copy of the source code. I've tried to check out a module and failed miserably. Why is it so unfriendly? I'm sure once you've gone through the whole process once it's easy but right now it's just annoying lol. I might give it another shot later, but for now I just downloaded all the latest libs I could find under the Files section. If anyone fancies going on the CVS, getting the latest version, zipping up the files and emailing them to me you'd be a total legend

DSFTP is a full-fledged FTP server, with the additional ability to boot .nds files directly from the FTP prompt (currently only tested on SuperCard CF and DS, but should work on most).
DSFTP is a stand-alone program that you can use to run a FTP server on your DS. It is also a software component that makes it easy for you to add an FTP server to your own program with a couple lines of code. With this, you can speed up the build process radically, because you can upload the new version of your program to your own running program, and reboot it immediately. This can even be automated via the command line. No swapping of flash cards ever again! Please refer to the Development section of this document for a quick introduction.
The downloadable archive (get it here) contains the following:
The compiled .nds and .ds.gba files of the stand-alone DSFTP server
The library and headers for the DSFTP software component
Full documentation in PDF and RTF format
The full source code for the stand-alone server program, as an example for how to use the software component
Heres whats in this version:
Changes:
Unified bootloading should now support most cards
Auto-generated user & pass if none specified
More bugfixes
