In a continued effort to not go bankrupt, and appeal to the base interests, here's SNK's new project - the latest in DS training games. This one's called iiotokocheck - or with a loose meaning-based translation, 'hot guy check'. You can see in the lower screen all the things you can do to this dude. *pan pan* indeed.
Note: game may not actually be from SNK and might possibly be from 2ch, but I don't know! If you think about it, it wouldn't be so different from their maid simulator.

Opera Software has confirmed that its internet browser will be free for users of Nintendo's Wii console until the end of June 2007.
The browser will be available to download for free from the Wii Shop Channel as a temporary promotion.
From July, users will be required to purchase Opera using Wii points - Nintendo's credit system for the new home console - although a price has not yet been set.
As well as including functions of the Opera 9 Desktop browser such as bookmarks and zoom, it will support Flash and AJAX-based content, and be customised to the Wii and its remote controller.
Opera already works closely with Nintendo, supplying the browser for the DS, which is due to launch in Europe on October 6th.

Jeremysr has posted a new entry in our Dream Coding Grand Prix Coding Competition, heres the details:
This is version 3 of my DSLua Skydiver game. Only a couple of you have played it before so I'll explain it. A plane moves at the top of the screen, and there is a pool of water surrounded by spikes at the bottom. You need to hit the touch screen at the right moment so that the diver will fall into the target. (He'll jump out of the plane as soon as you touch the touch screen.)
In this version I've added wind, highscores, a menu, and an "infinite" mode where you play for as long as you can until you die. Infinite mode saves your highest score.
See _INSTRUCTIONS.TXT to find out how to run it. (DSLua makes you go through some menus to get to the game...)

Via Gamasutra
As we've recently remarked here on Gamasutra, Nintendo's DS continues to dominate both hardware and software sales in Japan. But we looked to Ricciardi and Minamoto for some more explanation - is it that the DS is penetrating new retail stores, or is it just that existing stores are selling massive amounts of DS games? Riccardi comments of the games: "I think they're just being sold more in places they were already sold... Most people will buy their games at [large Japanese electronics retail stores] Bic Camera or Yodobashi Camera - you will get discounts [with a special loyalty card]."
But overall, Ricciardi noted that the DS has "...broken [games] into a much more mainstream thing than it used to be." For example, Minamoto's father recently bought a DS without any prompting from her. Ricciardi continues of the DS' near-total domination of the game charts: "I don't see it slowing down soon... [even though] you can't predict anything here.. it's penetrated so much." Minamoto adds: "So many people just bought the DS - they're not going to throw it out after 6 months.."
So why is DS especially popular in Japan - and may not ever reach that level in the West? Apart from the content being right, Ricciardi notes: "The culture here is more suitable to have a handheld game in the first place", with plenty of train journeys and other opportunities to play brief game sessions. Minamoto adds: "The Keitai [cellphone] industry opened up the possibility of playing games in such a way - that's why DS had an easier path."

Heres an excerpt
Let's get one thing right out the way: we're not massive fans of Taito's previous DS "re-imaginings" of its classic franchises, Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Island. Ultimately, where the developer failed was in its mistaken belief that audiences would delight in having their dewy-eyed nostalgia ripped apart by awkward touch-screen gimmickry, shoe-horned into bona fide classics under the guise of gameplay "innovation".
With that out the way, here's the good news: Taito has shown remarkable restraint in its handling of New Zealand Story Revolution - which is probably wise given the original game's fanatical following. In case you're not a member of the NZS brotherhood, Taito's classic sees you stepping into the sneakers of Tiki, a yellow kiwi bird, in a bid to rescue your feathered friends from the clutches of an evil leopard seal, following their abduction from the zoo. Shakespeare it ain't, but what the original game did have was old-skool charm by the bucketload - with some of the most memorable characters, levels and tunes ever wrangled into binary. It's also a complete ******* of a game thanks to its arcade roots.

NDSMail is an email and RSS reader by Bronto, which takes advantage of the DS Wifi Lib.
New feature: clicking "Save Mails" on the second button-page will save all mails and news items to files on the flashcard in a convenient XML-file. Configuration file is now XML too.
Some things to note:
SSL is broken at the moment, at least on my NDS phat / SCSD..
"Delete" button has no effect
When adding a new mail account, don't leave any fields blank, or saving will not work
Some strange bug causes the buttons in the settings screen to appear in a different color
Please ignore the "can't read ... file" messages, sometimes fread() returns incorrect values (0 although data is read)
Other changes include new keyboard, new FAT lib, new wifi lib, new devkit and much more...

News via DSFanboy
In the sequel, the roles have reversed and now the Mini Marios must save the day. With several obstacles in their path, players must guide the Mini Marios using the stylus and touch-screen. More interesting, however, is the ability for players to create custom maps and send them to other users via Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connect service. Overall, the game has received favorable scores:
Gamespot - 82%: "Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 may not play quite the same way the original game did, but the new take on the formula is a fun and refreshing one. The touch-screen controls are easy to get a handle on, and with more than 80 different stages to play through, as well as the construction mode, you'll find yourself with plenty to do. It's simply a great time for Mario fans and puzzle fans alike."
IGN - 70%: "The original Mario vs. Donkey Kong is a far better puzzle game than March of the Minis is, but that doesn't make this game a bad one. It is a clever Lemmings-inspired, touch screen design with a great focus on user-submitted content to keep the game going on and on. Its similarities to the first game are only in looks; the concept goes in a refreshingly different -- but just not as successful, addictive or challenging -- direction for Nintendo DS gamers."
Gamepro - 85%: "As a sequel, Mario vs. Donkey Kong: March of the Minis surpasses the original by leaps and bounds backed by the capabilities of the Nintendo DS, however the new control scheme does take some getting used to."
So there we have it. While many agree it's not as good as the first game, would you be inclined to agree, fine reader? Or has Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis surpassed the greatness of the first game?

News from Shash:
Well, today I'll talk a bit about how the ds texture compression works and what I've accomplished with it (not that much, really). It's actually quite simply, if I understood it correctly (not sure I did). Well, a compressed texture is theorically, quite simple. We use one texture slot (even if not fully) for actual texture data, being it texture slot 0 or slot 2 (there're 4 possible slots in the DS).
For every 4x4 pixels block, we'll use one 32bit number from slot0 or slot2, that'll define the actual pixel data, 8bit a row per 4 columns, makes the total 32bit. So we define every pixel with a 2bit number, that'll use after for palette indexing. Now we need some more data, a 16bit value: the palette offset and a mode how this will be used, that'll will be located in texture slot1.
So, the general idea is quite simple in the end. Read a 32bit value from either slot0 or slot2, read a 16bit value from slot1. Then, use the 16bit value to determine the mode (there 4 possible modes, each filling each row in different manners) and palette index. With this palette index, go through each of the 2bit values, contained in the 32bit, and add each of them (separately, of course, for each colour) to the palette index, to get the final palette index to be used for each pixel. Then, with this value, you can just index in the normal palette data to get the colour. Depending on the mode, colours will be (or not) treated in different manners. Seems it's not that simple :P
My implementation is far from complete, I've severe bugs that just show lots of garbage. I'll try to fix it tomorrow.
I also have been doing some severe register hacking, that is just, that some memory locations are mapped to specific hardware of the DS. So, for example, writing to 4000490h will push a new 10b vertex to the render queue. So, I've just hacked a few of the registers so make games/demos work better, even if it's not correct emulation

Brakken has done a quality review of the new M3 Lite Flash Cart for the DS, heres an excerpt:
Welcome to another review of the M3 Team’s excellent line of Nintendo DS Multimedia, Development and Backup units the M3 Perfect Lite. Ever since the early days of it’s conception the M3 Perfect has boasted very great compatibility with homebrew and receives constant support from it’s creators when it comes to updates enabling it to run mostly all the backups you could ever make.
Not much has changed in their Nintendo DS Lite only version – the M3 Perfect Lite – other then its physical size. It’s now almost exactly the same size as the filler cartridge that comes with the Lite. It fits flush inside the console without sticking out a bit. Additionally, it comes with two different color casings that you can use leaving you with a cartridge that matches your console in not only size, but now looks.

Aesthetic posted this news/request:
I'm a visual designer with a laughable programming background.
But I'll tell you what, I do love me the rumored touch screen Ipod. But, I am tired of waiting for it to happen.
In fact, I think I can do it better than them and I've realized that the DS is the perfect platform for my experiment. So what I'm looking to do is make a touch screen IPOD like mp3 player that will be insanely interactive, eye bogglingly 3d, and capable of wifi broadcasts.
I've attached some initial previz that I put together just to get the idea out of my brain and in a more tangible form:
http://www.newthesaur.us/DS/interface1.jpg
http://www.newthesaur.us/DS/interface2.jpg
or just visit the site I've put up:
http://www.newthesaur.us/DS/
Let me elaborate more on some of the features I see this app having (mind you these are just musings and could be taken out in the long run):
3D interface - so one thing that the DS has that the IPOD doesn't is 3D capablility, so using this to enhance the interaction and visual design will be a goal.
Innovative Interaction - this will be my primary contribution. Looking at interfaces beyond the scroll wheel. Since the interface is touch screen based this allows us to have a very dynamic context based gui.
Wifi Broadcast - I dream that a user will be able to walk into a cafe and see that there are three other users playing music in the cafe. From there they can listen to what each user in the cafe is listening to (if the other user has the setting activated). The user won't be able to download music but see song titles with which they can later go to track down the song perhaps on itunes music store to purchase.
These are just initial ideas and the final product will really depend on what the team is capable of pulling off. The scroll wheel is just to get my head around the idea and the final interaction will take full advantage of the limitless possibilities of touch screen interface.
So here's where you guys come in. I'm looking for some talented programmers to make this dream come true. If you are interested please pm me, email me (mtseng@newthesaur.us) or get me on AIM (mrbagsays).
I hope to hear from you guys. I totally respect the homebrew community and want to be a greater part in what you guys do best - making great apps.
Michael

The first video of a remote from the Wii being used in a shocking bout of domestic violence appeared on the web, and it ain't pretty. This baby packs quite a virtual punch and is perfect for deadbeat husbands and perturbed older housewives.
While Nintendo tries to bring more mature-rated games to the table, these images clearly show the dangers of wielding a skillet with a Wii-mote.
Please report any Wii-buse to your local authority, unless the person really deserved it.
