There was no saucy saunter down the red carpet, but Nintendo's casual darling Wii Sports did manage to surprise gamers with a guest-spot at the 2008 Academy Awards. In one of the night's many gags, host Jon Stewart gets caught off guard when the show returns from commercial break, to find him using one of the event's gigantic projection screens to play a quick round of Wii Tennis.
The entire segment lasts only thirty seconds, but it's chuckle-worthy, to be sure.

We're not huge fans of the Virtual Console release schedule being cropped back to two games (are you guys really running low?) but if big N continues to substitute quality for quantity, (as they have this week, we think) expect us to stay interested.
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (Nintendo 64, 1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points): In addition to being one of our most deceptively inedible heroes, Kirby's also one of our most versatile. Here, he stars in 2D/3D platformer hybrid that is, by all accounts, pretty darn solid.
Psychosis (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): From what we've managed to gather, this is a fairly standard R-Type clone. If you're in to that (and you people know who you are) this may make a good purchase. Other wise, just watch our linked video to experience the bizarre music.

These are instructions on how to setup your SD card to have both this .elf and mp3's on the same SD card.
Steps:

2. Copy the file called padding to your SD card
3. Use dd or writeelf (for windows) to copy MP3PLAY.elf to (physical)sector 2048
4. On the SD card, create a DIR called MP3 in root and place all your .mp3's in here

As our bat-eared readers discovered when the game was first released, the Wii edition of Guitar Hero III, though advertised as possessing Dolby Surround Sound capabilities, could only duplicate one channel of audio through multiple speakers (a.k.a. mono sound). Incensed, Nintendo's virtual troubadours demanded action -- Activision responded with a somewhat less-than-timely disc replacement program. Now, four months after the game was released, Activision has announced another method of atonement for their single-channel sins.
Instead of replacing your half-mute disc with a standard one (though this option is still available), you can now replace said disc with cold, hard cash (or warm, soft cash, depending on your local climate and the weariness of the bills you receive). While we're sure this policy will be exploited by those who tire of faux rocking and simply want the cash, it's refreshing to see Actie-V face their shortcomings so directly -- if not a tad unpunctually.

Finally in the last few weeks we have seen real Native Wii Homebrew working. (previously it was Gamecube Homebrew on the Wii but Nintendo blocked that route meaning you needed a Modchip to play Gamecube Homebrew on the Wii.
Things Needed
Nintendo Wii
UK US or Jap Version
Gamecube SD Card Adapter
Available at Play Asia
SD Card
1GB or higher should be OK
A copy of Zelda (It must match the version of console, ie US Zelda on a US WII)
UK / US / Jap Version
First check
On the Zelda Disc on the side thats played look for the following strings:
This exploit does not work with every version of Zelda:TP. Easy way to check your version is to compare the text string which is on the inner cycle of the data surface with the ones below.
RVL-RZDP-0A-0 JPN - working
Some minor problems reported e.g. Some greeny lines around the top area of the screen that appear with the penguin and if the TV type is set to 480i/p (60Hz or EDTV mode) the bottom is cut off
RVL-RZDE-0A-0 JPN - working
RVL-RZDE-0A-0 USA - working
RVL-RZDE-0A-2 USA - working (if you encounter problems with alpha2, re-download the latest rzde2.bin)
RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN - not supported yet
Next Job
Extract the Twilight hack zip archive into any folder.
Grab your SD Card and on it
Make a new folder on it and rename private
inside private folder make a new folder and rename wii
inside wii folder make a new folder and rename title
inside title folder make a new folder and rename RZDE (for USA)
RZDP (for Pal)
RZDJ (for Japan)
Then from the Twilight hack grap the file you need and rename to data.bin - stick that inside the RZDE (change to suit your system) Folder.
Next
Go into Wii Options --> Data Management --> Save Data --> Wii. Find your Zelda save, click on it, and click "Erase", and click Yes.
Now, go into SD card, and select the "Twilight Hack" save (the icon says "Wiibrew Loader"). Click copy, and yes. Now, go back out of that menu
Then start the game. Select the first save file (called Twilight Hack), complete the brightness setting, and talk to the man in front of you.
The Elf Loader Will then load You now have Wii Homebrew , what it will say is "Coming Soon Elf Loader and Beyond with a big fat penguin sitting there
Next is the harder part and it may be where a lot of you will fail and believe me i dont think its easy either but here goes.
Now you will need the demo.elf file from the Twilight Hack zipfile
You will also need Writeelf, once you have downloaded it then extract it to your desktop.
Now you should have the writeelf file and the demo.elf file on your desktop.
Now heres where unless you have used command lines before you may struggle.
I had to move the 2 files to my c:/documents and settings/billy folder because when i opened up the Command Prompt that is the folder it started in.
Now my SD Card showed up on my J Drive so this is the command i pasted into the command prompt box:
writeelf -f=demo.elf j
basically you can use this for any wii homebrew by renaming the file say tetris.elf to demo.elf or by changing the command above to whatever.elf you need. The J part is the drive that your SD Card is on so again change that to the drive you need. (do not change it to your C or Windows drive)
If successfull then it will write to the file
Then grabbing your SD Card insert it into the Gamecube SD Card Adapter, then insert that into Slot A on the Gamecube Memory port on the Nintendo Wii.
Then start the game. Select the first save file (called Twilight Hack), complete the brightness setting, and talk to the man in front of you.
The Elf Loader Will then load and you now will see the Demo and you are in the World of Wii Homebrew
This method can be reused for any new releases , so yes its not easy but if your a homebrew fan im sure you will try it , hopefully an easier way will be released that doesnt need require you to use command lines via a command prompt.
As Usual Please Discuss Via Comments and thanks to Wii Brew for the Twilight Hack and for some of the instructions that ive tried to simplifiy and make a little more sense of them.

I got a chance to swing by the SNK Playmore Suite at GDC to check out some of their offerings. Most of what they had going on on their screens were showings of their various game anthologies including Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol. 2, King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match, King of Fighters Collection Orochi Saga, Samurai Shodown Anthology, SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 and World Heroes Anthology. Not a whole lot new here but there were a couple of nice looking trailers for King of Fighters XII and the New Samurai Shodown.
The real treat however was a little surprise waiting on a DS in the corner, Metal Slug 7! I hot footed it over to the corner of the room and practically wrestled the girl playing it to the ground in my attempt to check out the game. It looked great, played better and had everything you could possibly want from a Metal Slug game. So if you are ready for a new Metal Slug experience, look no further than Metal Slug 7, coming soon to a DS near you.

Here we have another look at the new Mario Kart game for the Wii. We get see a bunch of multiplayer gameplay as well as some people "enjoying" the Wii wheel. Something about that wheel just leaves me scratching my head. Perhaps it's the fact that it's not attached to anything and just seems to be floating there. I think I'll stick to driving my Kart with a good old fashioned controller thank you very much.

Dwedit has released a new version of his Nes Emulator for GBA (DS):
This is a buggy alpha version
Fixed bugs
* Less crashes when using compressed roms
New Features
* Rewrote the Background Tile update system, so now it delays changes to the nametables until the next frame, so that the graphics synchronized properly. No more disappearing ? blocks in Super Mario Bros. (Punchout and 4-screen mirroring is currently broken)
Optimizations
* Games run much faster in this version
* Replaced some memory filling/copying loops with faster multi-register writing code
* Very heavy optimizations to PPU status reads, almost makes PPU hack unnecessary
* Now stores fixed PRG bank inside Fast Video RAM instead of slow cartridge slot, huge speedups for this reason
What's broken:
* PPU Hack does nothing right now
* PUNCHOUT is broken
* TQROM and Mapper 74 are broken (Fixed!)
* 4 screen mirroring is broken
* Savestates are buggy
* Don't try to use the cheat finder right now.
Internal changes which only make sense if you're the developer
* Moved some code out of IWRAM, including the multiplayer link code. (it's still there, just no longer wasting fast memory)
* Different timeout system

February 23rd, 2008, 11:00 Posted By: wraggster
At yesterday's "Lunch with the Luminaries" panel at GDC, five of the planet's most prestigious gaming industry figures had the opportunity to sit down for light snacks, civil discourse, and, of course, to flame their competitor's consoles. At least, that's what Sony exec Phil Harrison had in mind, as he warned EA Blueprint's Neil Young that the Wii is unfriendly territory for third-party developers -- due to Nintendo's overwhelmingly successful games on their own home console, everyone else can only hope to market their games to "only 40% of the installed base."
Young didn't deny this claim, but retorted that the development of their most recent game for the Wii, Smarty Pants, was "very easy to build very quickly" and "fundamentally much more fun" to create -- apparently, more fun than it was to actually play. Have third-party developers resigned themselves to living in Nintendo's shadow, prompting them to fire out "easy to build," mediocre titles? We don't think they quite understand -- if only 40 percent of Wii owners are buying your games, it's because the other 60 percent know better.

Slow week this week. We do however have one really cool fan film for release on the DS.
Return of the Ghostbusters.
The mile high city is rocked when an ancient Egyptian menace comes to town, and the Denver Ghostbusters must return to save the universe once more. In this sequel to the internet cult hit Freddy VS Ghostbusters, the boys in gray find themselves up to their eyeballs in spooks, as a greater threat looms on the horizon...
A talented cast and crew made up entirely of volunteers (see also: fanatics) worked over the internet and across borders for over two years. Featuring dazzling special effects, an original score, and an engaging story inhabited by quirky characters, this feature length film is a truly one of a kind fan made experience.
