Nintendo couldn't have been more obtuse in its announcement last week at GDC, but from the looks of it you won't be enjoying that totally free Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection play forever. Nintendo is busting out a new Pay & Play service for certain games, which seems to refer to both downloadable content for some titles, and online multiplayer for others. It's really hard to tell, but it doesn't sound like Nintendo has any intention of going the Xbox Live route. There will be red stickers on games with Pay & Play features so you can spot them in the store, and if you do end up paying for online multiplayer, it looks like it'll be on a per-title basis. Other than that Nintendo isn't spilling much -- we have no idea what titles will cost money to play, and how much it'll be -- but given the fact that Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart are just about to make online play on the Wii actually interesting, this isn't exactly an encouraging sign.

Nintendo unleashed a Wii firmware update on our region while we slept.
It put its hands inside the machine and tidied up bits and pieces we are never likely to see. This, according to Nintendo, should improve system performance.
The update brings us to firmware version 3.2, which sounds quite respectable and probably is well presented.
If you spot the update doing any other exciting things, let us know. Elsewhere, today is Tuesday and it is sunny in Brighton. Also, Tom has a bad foot.

Nintendo has updated the website for the WiiWare title formerly known as Pokemon Farm.
According to information translated by GoNintendo, it's been renamed Everyone's Pokemon Ranch. The ranch in question is owned by Yukari, a friend of Bebe (who you may recall from Diamond and Pearl on the DS).
You'll be able to transfer Pokemon from Diamond and Pearl, storing up to a thousand of them on the Wii. You can also save photos you've taken of them to SD card or post them on the Wii message board.
There will be special activities that allow you to interact with your Pokemon - you'll all be able to sit round a campfire together, for example, or get sh**faced and play soggy biscuit. Possibly not the last one.
A release date for Everyone's Pokemon Ranch has yet to be announced.

Quirky posted this about his Homebrew Web Browser for the Nintendo DS:
Lately I've read some positive comments about my home-brewed web browser on a few different forums and news sites. It's nice to know that people find the software useful! I've also received some suggestions via email on how to make the browser even better for people. One of the interesting things about having a homebrew browser is that it can do things that the official browser can't, like download files to the memory card or provide translations for languages other than the official 5.
So with this in mind, I'm now working on improving the way Bunjalloo downloads files. Currently it's not very user friendly and requires you to download the file, then save it. This is pretty unintuitive - it'd be better to sniff out the MIME-type of file that the user clicks on, then either download and show it for supported image and text MIME types, or offer to save it to disk for "exotic" MIME types. Y'know, a bit like everyone else does it :-)
As for translations, there's not much user interface to translate at the moment, but what is there has now been pulled out into resource files, defined per language. Currently only the languages supported internally by the DS are selectable, and the language displayed can only be altered by changing the DS's language option from the system settings. But this is only a beginning, if there is enough interest I can extend language support to those not built in to the DS via a configuration option. The actual translations into other languages need doing, so if you want to help out let me know. I have English and Spanish done, Italian, French and German are needed, as is Japanese. Sadly Japanese won't work without changing the font, the one I have at the moment doesn't include the full range of universal characters.
Speaking of helping out, keep that feedback coming. Star issues that you think are most important, report bugs, even write patches ;-) There's a new mailing list/forum for discussing Bunjalloo if mailing me is too much hassle. I look forward to hearing from you!

News/release from MorganDS
For the last couple of weeks I've been writing a class in C++ for storing and evaluating expressions. Today I wrote a very primitive program for the DS that implements the class and performs calculations. Eventually, this application will be a sort of graphing calculator that will include expression evaluation, graphing, and calculus tools like slope fields and Euler's method. It will also be capable of evaluating definite integrals and Riemann sums.
I will post updates as I continue work on this project. Any feedback would be appreciated. In the meantime, check out the calculator. It's compatible with addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, exponents, parentheses, and basic trig functions.

Occasionally Nintendo will release updates to the existing Wii Menu, or enhancements to other system features and channels. This page lists many of those updates, with a brief description of their benefits, and when the updates were made available. Of course when you download the latest Wii Menu Update, you get all of the previous Wii Menu enhancements included. Enhancements to specific channels, like the Check Mii Out Channel, may require you to re-download the channel again to access the updated version.
Most Recent Update:
February 25, 2008
Wii Menu 3.2
This update does not affect any prominently-used features or menus; however it does provide some behind the scenes updates that will improve system performance.
THis system update doesnt affect any of the Homebrew Exploits at this time

News/release from NEON725
OK So I'm not very creative with names. Sorry.
I'm an old hand at coding but this is my first time at PAlib, so go easy on me!
I always had a fascination with momentum and force in a virtual object, so I applied those tricks to a DS game and this is what came out.
The game itself kinda sucks, just avoid the bullets for as long as possible. (You can't even submit high scores yet.)
D-Pad moves ball.
A button freezes momentum and restarts the game when you die.
EDIT: My next game will be a port from DARKbasic. We'll see how that turns out...

Tom Clancy's EndWar creative director Michael de Plater is reported to have confirmed that the RTS will be released on DS and PSP, as well as 360 and PS3.
According to several reports, de Plater confirmed the game will making its way to handheld platforms at GDC. That's all we've got to go on, for the moment as nothing official has come from Ubisoft.
EndWar takes place during World War Three, where most of the Earth's resources have been depleted.
Proving that even a nuclear war can't keep those damn Russkies from pursuing their expansionist polices, players take control of an army to fight over the residual resources, like mineshafts.
There's a lot of radioactive fallout surrounding March 2009 as a possible release date. We've contacted Ubisoft for confirmation. Stay tuned.

Short version: I need 200$ to buy a 2nd DS + flashcart to add multiplay :
Long story:
I’ve said earlier that I would make a point on this, here it is. As you may have noticed, still no multiplayer in this release… Why?
I planned to add it during my year abroad in Montreal, but infortunately the friend who was planning to come with me (and with his DS) could not come… So with only 1 DS on my hand, adding multiplayer is impossible.
But there’s another problem now. In 2 months, I’ll be back in France and as I’ll have school finished, I’ll start working. I also plan to take a flat with my girlfriend. This means obviously, no more free time for homebrew development…
The good part is that I still have 2 months to implement multiplayer !! But I need a second DS to be able to do it… That’s where I need you. I need 200$ to buy a second DS + flashcart. That means, if 100 people each donate 2$, I can add multiplayer to WTD…
So it’s up to you now! I’ll do my best to add multiplay for a final version of my homebrew, but I need your support… Keep it mind that the faster I can bought the 2nd DS, the best chances are that multiplay will be up with plenty of options!

In between solving Britain's obesity crisis and teaching Doctors how to perform surgery, the Wii is now helping burn victims boost their recovery process.
Doctors in South-East England are offering patients sessions on the console, in order to bring back flexibility to damaged areas.
"When recovering from an operation, such as a skin graft, patients may need to recover normal use of their hands and arms," said Maureen Adams, head of therapy at Queen Victoria NHS Foundation Trust in East Grinstead.
"Using the Wii is a way of significantly improving movement, while not seeing the activity as therapy, which helps motivate them. Wii can also be done at home, so patients are able to continue their own personal therapies."
According to the BBC, the Wii has also helped a boy who was struck by lightning, kept residents of a Welsh care home physically and mentally active, and is being touted as an aide to recovering stroke victims.
Maybe it's just because we caught the Sarah Chronicles pilot last week, but the idea of a Wii in every home, everywhere, is quite unnerving.
Mark our words - a nuclear apocalypse will soon reign down on upon us and from the ashes will rise the machines... all in the form of Italian plumbers shouting "Let's-a-go!"

Nintendo of American president Reggie Fils-Aime has said that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be coming to Europe until the Autumn.
Speaking to 1UP, Reggie answered a question regarding why Wii Fit and Mario Kart was coming to Europe first by saying, "Yeah, but they don't get Smash Brothers until fall."
Reggie cited the reason as a production problem, claiming that Nintendo would have to open and convert new factories in order to step up disc duplication, which would no doubt prove costly and wasteful in the long run.
Sorry Europe - looks like you'll (we'll) have to be content with Mario Kart for the time being.
A total letdown for folks in the UK and Europe wanting to get this game.

It's official - the Wii has gone so "mainstream" it's now hanging out at Hollywood's biggest globally televised circle jerk.
As you probably know it was the Oscars last night, and lots of films won various awards. It was an unexpectedly poor show for Britain as Keira Knightley's tits won none of the 48 categories they were nominated in.
But it was a bumper night for Nintendo in global advertising terms. As the awards ceremony resumed following one commercial break, Jon Stewart off of satirical US news programme The Daily Show appeared on stage playing Wii tennis.
According to News.com, "It was a funny moment, and in keeping with Stewart's contemporary wit."
Judge for yourself by watching Stewart's tennis skills in action over on .

The Wii Homebrew Scene is really hotting up with the release today of the DOL to Elf converter which allows you to convert Gamecube Homebrew DOL files to Elf Format.
Heres the french to english translation
For the moment, there is no homebrew using the Wiimote, but you can still play homebrews Gamecube.
But the Gamecube homebrews are often proposed. Dol.
Do not worry, Doltool3 is there for you, allowing you to convert your file in fraud. Elf, and thus able to read it with the fault Twilight Hack.
So start by downloading Doltool3: (via Comments)
Extract the contents on your hard drive.
Next, run the command prompt: click Start> all programs> accessories> command prompt.
Browse on file with the command:
Cd .. To return to the previous folder.
Example: if you are in C: \ Users \ Hadrien28 and you write cd .. You will be in the file C: \ Users.
Type the command: cd "foldername" to return to a folder.
Example: you are in C: \ Users \ Hadrien28 and you have a case where you have Wii retrieved doltool3.rar. Write Wii cd and then you are now in the file C: \ Users \ Hadrien28 \ Wii.
You have to navigate through your files until you are in the directory where you extracted the contents of doltool3.rar earlier
Write now: doltool.exe-e snowlords.dol
Corresponds to the snowlords.dol. Fraud that you want to convert. Elf.
Now click Enter.
Now you can play your. Elf fault with the game Zelda.
Attention all. Fraud will not work with this flaw.
Do not be surprised if this does not work, like emulators.
We therefore hope that a new version will be coming in the days ahead.

unholyfire has released the first homebrew emulator for the Nintendo Wii. He's ported SNES9X GX v1.43 to run it native Wii mode. Unlike other emulators that run on the Wii under GameCube mode, this emulator runs in pure 100% Nintendo Wii mode.
Changes from Snes9xGx 1.43
- Added Wii DVD detection capability (allows you to browse the DVD to fetch
ROMS)
- Changed "goto menu" function to button combo "L+R+X+Y" (to support SNES/GC
adapters and/or homebrew controllers)

Now that the Nintendo DS has a naughty game, it's the Wii's turn! Dubbed Osouji Sentai Clean Kuri—n Ki-pa- ("Cleaning Squadron Clean Keeper"), the game has players clean a high school in heaven that's been polluted by the "Filth Devil." According to Famitsu, winning in-game battles gives players lewd "reward CG." We seriously doubt that it will be pornography (the game hasn't yet been rated), but the screens do look rather risqué. Shudder at the bad Wii puns this game will spawn!
