Square Enix has finally nailed down a firm US release date for its upcoming, dare we say original action-RPG for the DS, The World Ends With You. While Nintendo listed the game among its spring releases last month, the calender jockeys at Final Fantasy proper have announced that the game will make it to North American retail outlets on April 22.
Developed at the hands of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories developer Jupiter, the game has certainly been on the minds of those of us partial to Nintendo's touchable handheld, as as well as those with a thing for big feet and Japanese culture. The World Ends With You is set within Tokyo's "trendiest youth culture center," Shibuya, and takes "major influences" from the area's cultural bearings, from food and music to fashion and design. It all sounds great, but honestly you had us at original.

We're always a little skeptical of piracy impact numbers, especially when companies try to factor in things like "lost sales," which can't be adequately measured, but it's still interesting to hear how large the hit is estimated to be -- like Nintendo's recent filing with the US Trade Representative that piracy cost it and its partners some $975m worldwide in 2007. Saying that the popularity of the Wii and DS makes Nintendo an "attractive target" for counterfeiters, the big N broke the problem down by region, highlighting its efforts to stem the tide and proposed solutions and regulations. We'd say that with profits soaring and plenty of people clamoring for hard-to-find systems, Nintendo could probably get back a little of that cash by finally getting some boxes on shelves instead of pushing for new laws, but hey -- even Mario's lawyers probably get sick of being paid in mushrooms.

Just two games for Virtual Console enthusiasts this week, and both for the Megadrive. Say hello to Eternal Champions and Phantasy Star II.
Being Megadrive games, they both cost 800 Wii Points, which is GBP 6.00 / EUR 8.00 or thereabouts.
What are they then? Well, Eternal Champions is a 2D fighter with combatants drawn from every corner of history, including made-up ones, so you've got a caveman fighting a cyborg, etc.
It had fatality style moves and Overkills, and some quirky ideas about control. Obviously I have no first-hand experience of this, but am instead riffing on what our Virtual Console expert Dan Whitehead told me when I emailed him in a panic. For all I know Eternal Champions is actually a game about Louise Redknapp.
The other one, Phantasy Star II, is from a long line of science-fiction RPGs with turn-based combat and top-down graphics.
Look out for a roundup of these, and whatever else Nintendo adds to the VC this month, in a future so near you can reach out and only have to stand around for a week before touching it.

Eidos is bringing the PSP game Death Jr. 2: Root of Evil to the Wii in Summer 2008.
Developed by Backbone Entertainment, the game charts the adventures of the Grim Reaper's son. Despite the '2' in the title, this is actually the third game in the series.
We don't like to be judgemental, but it's hard to remain calm when we see a major publisher release a game ported from a handheld that only has a Metacritic rating of 68.
It's also not a good sign that Konami, the previous distributor of the series, isn't involved with this project.
Anyway, take a look at these screens, right here.

Nintendo Europe has told us that running regional tournaments for Super Smash Bros. Brawl then giving out lots of juicy prizes is something it is "looking at" doing.
The American arm of the platform holder revealed plans to stage regional tournaments across the USA earlier this week, in order to drum up some excitement for the game leading up to its 9th March launch.
Retail partner Best Buy will hold events in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston to whittle down finalists who will battle it out on launch eve in New York.
The overall winner will get a fancy Wii with crystal-coating and Smash Bros. Brawl design, as well as a home theatre system from Best Buy and a copy of the game.
Second place will get a Wii, copy of the game, and USD 1000 in Best Buy vouchers. Third will get the same, but only USD 500, while fourth will get the same again and USD 250.
Everyone taking part (256 people at each regional event) will get a USD 10 voucher for Best Buy.
Evidently Nintendo needs to persuade someone like Game to do the same thing here. Or HMV. Or a supermarket. Or a bar. We'd go to that.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is yet to be dated for Europe, and currently sits ambiguously in Q2 2008 territory.

Contrary to what has previously been stated, the Nintendo Wii port of Okami will have some extra frills. A listing on Capcom's website reveals that Clover Studio's masterpiece will now support widescreen (16:9) and 480p progressive scan support. That should give you more than enough reason to finally splurge on some Wii component cables.
Developer Ready at Dawn, who is responsible for the port, had previously said the game would be an "exact port" with only Wii remote support added during brush stroke moments. While this isn't new content, the technical improvement is a welcome addition to this visually stunning title. Okam-Wii (not an official title) is due out March 25.

Given everything else in Smash Bros Brawl has been revealed on the internet, it's only fitting that a few unintentional quirks are spoiled, too. While you might argue/joke "that's not a bug, it's a feature," we're pretty sure this one is a bug.
Normally, Jigglypuff's final smash has him turn into a giant puff and push people off the stage, subsequently returning to normal size. Using the collapsed bridge, someone found a way to keep him permanently enlarged. You don't have to sit through the entire video, only the first minute or so is important.

Impatient to get your Brawl on? Some of you North American gamers could get a chance to play Nintendo's all-star fighter as early as this Saturday, when Nintendo kicks off the first of four regional Smash Bros. Brawl tournaments across the United States.
The regional tournaments will take place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and New York City, with a maximum of 256 participants at each location. The winners from each tournament will meet in New York for the finals, with the grand prize winner walking away with a crystal-coated Wii, home theatre system, and (of course) a copy of Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
The three finalists will win non-crystal-coated Wii consoles, extra Wii remotes, copies of Brawl, and Best Buy gift certificates ranging from $250 to $1,000. Regional tournaments register players on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we'd recommend getting there nice and early to compete. The first tourney is this Saturday, February 16 in Los Angeles.

libSSL is a modification of a C SSL Library (YaSSL) to work under DS limited system. My main goal was to simplify many of the complex encryption and connection functions to make a simple and easy-to-use helper ready to use with PAlib.
Release notes:
New version released! The best update in this version is that I removed many unused functions and some files, so it’s smaller and faster. I fixed some random functions and made them similar to PAlib random function. Download it inside libSSL section, in the sidebar. ;D
