With all eyes turned to San Francisco's Moscone Center this week, we half expected the Wii's Virtual Console to take a breather. What we got, as it turns out, is two extremely competent releases playing to two of our greatest loves, namely ninjas and, well, genetically engineered chicks with claws, giving those of us manning the Joystiq bunker something to fawn over while the team prepares to burn the midnight oil.
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points): We'd be more inclined to watch daytime television if network soap operas took a page from Tecmo and filled their stories with ninjas, demons, and trans-dimensional clones. While Ryu Hayabusa's 8-bit escapades may be lacking the over-the-top gore found in the series' more contemporary offerings, we doubt even the upcoming Ninja Gaiden II will have a 'ship of doom.'
Phantasy Star II (Sega Genesis, 1 player, 800 Wii Points): While Phantasy Star is better known now for its multiplayer shenanigans and a story thin enough to be named Top Model, the franchise's single player roots continue to be home to some of our most fondly-remembered role-playing from days when pixels were king. It's true that some could argue that Phantasy Star IV tops out its brothers as the series' best bet, but we'll always have a special place in our hearts for Phantasy Star II and Nei's cosmetically-challenged ears.

Players eager to harness their inner mesothorax in Atlus' recently announced Drone Tactics for the Nintendo DS will have to keep their antenna and compound eyes in check, as the game has been pushed back from its previously announced March 25 release. The turn-based strategy game, which promises to give players "a deeply customizable army of mechanized insects," is now expected to land and pollinate Nintendo's handheld on April 8. We'd be upset, but honestly this gives us another two weeks to come up with new ways to shoehorn entomology terms into posts while we wait. Excited yet?

Company offers advice on best practice for the Wii Remote to US consumers
Nintendo has offered some advice to the public on how best to use the Wii Remote when playing games, and underlined its view that playing Wii games is perfectly safe - as long as you don't "overdo it".
The advice, from Nintendo of America's director of PR Anka Dolecki, came in direct response to an article on ABC2 News looking at the apparent spate of complaints such as tendonitis, brought about by excessive Wii play.
But Nintendo is keen to stop any potential links between injuries and the Wii, and released the following statement:
"Nintendo is committed to ensuring not only a fun game play experience on the Wii, but a safe one as well," said Dolecki. "Nintendo has gone to great lengths to inform consumers about the innovative and unique game-play experience on the Wii."
She went on to talk about the Wii Remote Jacket that the company released some time after launch in response to "reports of minor incidents during overly enthusiastic game play."
"The Wii Remote is perfectly safe when used as instructed: use a firm grip, don't let go, use the wrist strap and make sure the game-play area has ample open space," she added.
"As when beginning any new physical activity, it's best to pace yourself and not overdo it. Some games, including Wii Sports, include in-game reminders for players to take a break every now and then."
The Wii is expected to finish 2008 with the highest installed base of any of the next generation consoles, outselling both its more expensive and high-tech rivals, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Chano posted some screens and news of his rather awesome looking RPG for the GBA (DS)
First and foremost, excuse me for posting this thread in english. Although I'm spanish, I visit PlayerAdvance regularly because I think that it's a great dev community. It's just that my french language level isn't too good .
Well, I'm doing a RPG for the GBA using HEL and AAS libraries. I just wanted to show you the game a bit.
More information :
There isn't still any downloadable demo, I'll try to put one this summer. The battle system is similar to the system used in Grandia games, but with a bunch of changes (for example, there's no magic points).
I'm using the following libraries to make the game:
- HEL (on top of HAM) for main hardware access. If you are doing something with HAM change NOW to HEL .
- AAS for playing mods and wavs. Good sound quality and crazy performance.
- HAM for managing a BG that needs to be updated in real-time (for transparency effects on top of sprites).
And the tools I'm using are these:
- Visual HAM for programming and compiling and stuff like that.
- gfx2gba for converting graphic files to GBA useable data.
- GBA Crusher for compressing background data.
- SoX for converting wavs to a suitable format for the AAS converter.
- Katie for convert the gfx automatically to a suitable format.

News/release from Bigfish:
I was really annoyed at the lack of a visual novel maker for the DS, so I've started to make this: VisMake! Although, right now it's more "make" than "vis" since there's no picture support at the moment...
Although, anyways, right now it can be used to make compelling multichoice adventures, or any other text based thing. Plus, the help file was written on a real DS using this program, so that's impressive, right!
Features:
- Edit as you play
- Variable width font
- Goto action
- Page based system
- Save/Loading
- Intuitive editor (albeit REALLY ugly)
Bugs:
- Save/Load screen only works correctly when filenames entered each time are larger or equal length to the previous one... Yeah, I'll fix that soon.
Soon to be added:
- Picture support
- Integrated picture editor (A bit iffy there...)
- Typing text with blips
- Ability to change colors
- MOD file support
How to set it up:
Put all files in root directory. Patch with DLDI.
Enjoy!

Kotakuite razmig snapped this rather interesting photo at his local GameStop. In a sign promoting the Nerf DS case, he noticed something a little strange. Right there in the case, nestled among the other games is an R4 cartridge. For those not in the know, the R4 is a popular product that will allow its users to download and play DS games illegally through the use of a Micro SD card. Mind you, the cartridge itself is technically not illegal, but given GameStop's hard stance on this type of thing and Nintendo's recent crackdown on piracy, I'm rather surprised this ad made it through. Having been a graphic designer, I know these things get looked at by a number of people before it goes to print and I would think someone would have caught it. Guess not.

Of course we know that the R4 Cart isnt used just for piracy but you cant tell some sites

I haven't posted on DCEmu for a few weeks now, but something has been bothering me for a while now.
The Nintendo Wii was a VERY successful console, totally outselling both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 (which had over a year on the Wii, mind you). But here is what is bothering me: now what? Will all of Nintendo's future consoles be fully interactive like the Wii? Will they all do as well as the Wii has? How far will Nintendo take the idea of interactive gaming? And are we going to see the end of push-button gaming in the future?
So far, new consoles are usually better graphics, faster processors...you know, the works. But it's not everyday that a gaming company takes the leap that Nintendo did. In my own opinion, it seems that Nintendo would want to stray from this path that other consoles seem to live by and rather take advantage of the possibilities of interactivity. But I haven't the slightest idea what this may entail, or what kind of "interactivity" we may see in the near future.
I'd like to know what you all think. Please respond via comments.

Colus has posted about his GPS project on DS:
Hi there,
I'm working on my GPS project for DS named Ranger. That'll be an open source project which means everyone could build him(her)self GPS system on DS.
Here I show you some pictures of my work, hardware and software.....
For users, just convert your map to a GIF file in storage card(any you need an slot1 cart like M3 R4 Neo or etc.), after a pretty sample configure with INI file, and then enjory your GPS system with your own map(even a Treasure Map).
and, leave me a message, if you like that.
Features:
Navigation(Location your postition for now)
Wifi
and more...
more pictures uploading....
and that's real work mode
for lots of reasons I disable loaction mark, just have look around my home
As you know that's a Dev-Sample cart with RS232 interface,, just for my debug, the finished one could just a little bigger than a normal GBA cart. And maybe an USB interface for computer.
Looks awesome

Select owners of Guitar Hero III for Wii have been moshing uncontrollably as best they can in mono for months on end, but it seems as if Activision has finally got its interconnects sorted and will start issuing replacement discs. According to direct end-user reports and the (admittedly blurry) shots in the gallery below, the firm is now dishing out pre-paid envelopes in which customers have to ship back their faulty GH III disc and wait "3 to 4 weeks" before getting a new, stereo-enabled one free of charge. Live sans your favorite game for a month, or keep rockin' in the monaural world? Tough call, indeed.

News/release from Dom:
We've released version 1.01 of DSVideo, now available from the downloads page.
This is a bug fix release for the encoder and should fix a few problems with some videos. In particular, if you have seen the error message "Unhandled input video frame rate 23.979144" or if the encoder has just frozen before printing any message at all, please retry using the new version.
In addition, the encoder can now be run with just the name of the input video file (no need to pass the output file name), and it will use the video file name with the extension '.dsv'.
A complete list of changes in the encoder is included in the download, in the file CHANGES. The decoder hasn't changed in this release.
