“For every Carnival Games there is a BioShock and for every Wii Fit there is a Resident Evil 5”
Speaking to CasualGaming.biz as part of its Girl Gaming Month, Nintendo’s UK Wii product manager Rob Lowe has stated that the rise in popularity of casual software has not had any detrimental affect on the importance of hardcore titles in the market.
“There is clear room for both and any publisher can demonstrate clear value in both casual and hardcore,” Lowe stated. “For every Carnival Games there is a BioShock and for every Wii Fit there is a Resident Evil 5.
Regarding Nintendo’s own output, Lowe added that Nintendo remains focused on its core title selection – and that many of its supposedly ‘core’ titles still appeal to its dedicated fanbase.
“For every Wii Fit, Brain Training and Nintendogs title we release we also release a Super Mario Galaxy, Professor Layton, Smash Bros, Metroid and so on. That's not even taking into account the huge number of core gamers who enjoy our Touch Generations range just as much as those who are new to gaming do.”

Whilst Wii Fit’s seven-week long stint at the top of the ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack All Formats Top 40 may have been bought to a halt by THQ’s next-gen fighter UFC 2009 this week, casual titles continue to perform well at UK retail with two top-level casual outing debuting high.
Nintendo’s ongoing RPG success Pokemon Platinum, a combined remake of its GBA duo Diamond and Pearl, enters the listings in second spot, one space ahead of EA’s Wii Fit contender EA Sports Active.
Wii Fit itself, which is still just two no.1 titles away from equally Eidos’ all-time record of 18 number ones enjoyed by Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, falls to fourth. Elsewhere in the Top Ten there are casual titles aplenty – Nintendo’s Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii claim 7th and 8th respectively, with Ubisoft’s My Fitness Coach grabbing ninth.
And that’s not the end of the casual influence either, with many other titles holding firm in the listings – Sega’s Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (11th), Nintendo’s Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training (16th), Disney’s Hannah Montana: The Movie (22nd), 2KPlay’s Carnival: Funfair Games (25th), Activision’s Guitar Hero World Tour (27th), D3P’s Ben 10: Alien Force (28th), THQ’s Big Family Games (30th), LucasArts’ LEGO Indiana Jones (32nd), Nintendo’s Mario Kart DS (33rd), Sega’s Superstar Tennis (34th) and EA’s Trivial Pursuit (40th).

Xseed has announced that spooky Wii game Ju-On: The Grudge will arrive in the US this October, presumably in time for Halloween.
There's no word on a European version, but a recent teaser trailer suggests Rising Star Games has picked up the licence. We'll check.
As the name suggests, Ju-On: The Grudge is based on the scary Japanese (and Hollywood remake) film The Grudge, created by Takashi Shimizu. He'll be a creative consultant, and help players become the Yamada family, who must individually face a grudge curse accidentally placed upon them by their daughter who was exposed after a visit to an abandoned warehouse.
As if creeping around dark and bloody environments with freaky girls popping up in-front of your face isn't bad enough, developer feelplus will let friends grab a second Wiimote and push buttons to trigger in-game scares. The films - both Hollywood and original - are pretty scary.
For an idea of the effect the game has, check out The Grudge teaser trailer on Eurogamer TV.

Major US retailer GameStop has listed Activision's Tony Hawk Ride for a price of $119.99, including the new wireless skateboard controller.
The GameStop website also lists a release date of October 13 for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. Activision has not revealed an official price tag - although it has indicated it would be in line with existing Guitar Hero bundles. On GameStop.com the Guitar Hero: World Tour guitar controller bundle is priced at $99.99.
Tony Hawk Ride and the wireless controller was revealed for the first time earlier in the month, but Activision has not announced a release date more specific than autumn 2009. Although the game will be released in Europe during the same period there is continued confusion over whether the Xbox 360 version will be a timed exclusive.
Although listed on other sites such as Amazon.com, no other retailer has stated a price for the game - either in the US or Europe.

Swedish studio A Different Game has announced the development of Ghostwire, the first augmented reality game to take advantage of the Nintendo DSi's built-in cameras.
According to a press release issued over the weekend, Ghostwire superimposes in-game ghosts over the environments seen through the DSi's camera, allowing users to "project" game assets onto real-world locales.
"The Nintendo DSi platform is perfect for this game," said lead designer Anders Bergman. "This allows us to enhance the integrated real-world experience with the combination of camera, microphone and touch screen."
Ghostwire has been in development for various mobile phones since 2008, and won first prize in last year's N-Gage Mobile Games Innovation Challenge. A Nintendo DS release has not yet been dated.

Molokai has released OpenTyrianWii 1.0
A Port of the rail shooter OpenTyrian to Wii
Features
Full Wiimote+Nunchuk support, partial GC Pad and Classic Controller support. Keyboard support is untested.
2 Player Arcade action (use two Wiimotes).
Full input choice (you can use any Wiimote or any GC pad, no matter the sync or port, as well as the Wiimote IR (which I don't like) and the keyboard).
This is a Wii adaptation of TYRIAN, the game edited by Eclipse and published by Epic MegaGames. The original game was programmed by Jason Emery, illustrated by Daniel Cook, and its music composed by Alexander Brandon and Andreas Molnar.
This port is based on OpenTyrian project code, maintained by mindless2112, syntaxglitch, emacs.hacker, yuriks.br.
This README file was based on the README found on Nuvalo's old one.
This port is separate from Nuvalo's port, and has now replaced it (as you can see). It is fully functional and much more stable than the Wii-Linux version.
This is not the version featured in the Homebrew Showcase linked on the main page (unfortunately). But trust me, it is better, and easier to use.
Gameplay
Tyrian is an arcade-style vertical scrolling shooter. The player controls a space ship fitted with different weapons and enhanced energy shields. Money is earned by destroying enemies and grabbing bonuses, which is then used to purchase upgrades such as weapons, shields, energy generators, and different ships from interlevel menus. The game is fast paced and presents a variety of enemies and bosses.
Installation
Download the two packages on Google Code (you only need the tyrianFiles zip once. Those won't be updated)
Unzip them directly to the root of your SD card (will work on putting the cfg and sav files in the tyrian folder)
Run using HBC (you can run it with something else, but HBC is the standard now)
Known Issues
Alternating A and B too quickly in the Game Menu can cause an exception.
Network status unknown.
Gamepad/keyboard statuses unknown.
Classic controller buttons don't work (joystick does). It requires the use of the Wiimote buttons.
GC pad joystick does not work (buttons do).
Selectin "Exit" in the main menu causes an exception (should be an easy fix).
Changelog
1.0 - 25 May 2009
Initial release.
Supports game saves natively.
Full audio support (music synthesized at 32khz, sfx resampled to 33075).
Wiimote/Nunchuk support through SDL Wii's joystick functionality.

With summer just around the corner, this Monday finds an especially hot mix of downloadable game offerings for the WiiWare and Nintendo DSiWare services, as well as for the Virtual Console. Nintendo DSi users can become world-famous pop stars or use a new photo application to view their pictures in interesting new ways. Wii owners can transform into bubble-bursting dragons or hunt for melons on a mysterious island. And be sure to check out this week's Virtual Console debut, which features clay figures and stop-action animation to create a comedic twist to the street fighting genre.
Nintendo DSiWare
American Popstar: Road to Celebrity (Gameloft, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone -- Comic Mischief, 800 Nintendo DSi Points): This is your enthralling and interactive success story as a young hopeful in the music milieu. The adventure begins when you get the chance to audition at your Hollywood high school. But the road to celebrity isn't an easy one: Your secret crush is also auditioning, and so is your evil rival. This unique mix of music-themed gaming and social adventure will let you show your talents to the world, take your best photo with the Nintendo DSi system's built-in camera and meet lots of people who may help you build your career. You're about to become the greatest pop star in the world. Talk, share activities and be friendly or unfriendly with numerous characters. Customize your character's name and appearance, and develop skills and personality through your actions. Four musical mini-games include Guitar, Singing, Drums and Dance. Record your voice, take your own photos and sign autographs.
Photo Clock (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 Nintendo DSi Points): Photo Clock allows you to enjoy the photos taken with your Nintendo DSi Camera application in a new way. Watch your images appear on the top screen of your Nintendo DSi system according to your chosen display settings (specific photos or all photos; in order or randomly displayed). Select from either an analog or digital clock, using the system's internal clock or offsetting the time however you like. Program up to three alarms – with snooze functionality for those who need it – and assign them a preset ring or use a sound created in Nintendo DSi Sound. Experience all the enjoyment of a photo album while ensuring you won't lose track of the time.
WiiWare
BUBBLE BOBBLE Plus! (TAITO, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone -- Comic Mischief, 600 Wii Points): BUBBLE BOBBLE Plus! is a simple yet exhilarating action game where you control the bubble-blowing dragons Bub and Bob, trapping enemies in bubbles and then popping them. You can play all 100 of the Standard Mode rounds, which faithfully recreate the nostalgic arcade game, or try 100 new Arrange Mode rounds, which allow up to four players to play on stages with exciting new features such as new enemies and stage layouts. There are also Super Mode rounds for you to enjoy. Determine the true ending by solving puzzles hidden on each stage to defeat the final boss. In Ranking Mode, players with broadband Internet access can use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service to compete with players from around the world. Enjoy an additional 100 rounds and face off against new boss characters by purchasing "Expert Mode 1" and "Expert Mode 2" add-on content.
ADVENTURE ISLAND The Beginning (Hudson Entertainment, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone -- Cartoon Violence and Comic Mischief, 800 Wii Points): ADVENTURE ISLAND The Beginning comes to the Wii console with exciting new skills and elements. Learn how to use new skills while exploring Adventure Island from coast to coast. Search for Golden Melons hidden throughout the stages and mini-games. When obtaining Golden Melons, you'll be able to purchase various items to help you on your adventure. These items can increase your attack power or enable you to reach places you couldn't get to before. Fulfill certain requirements while playing in any of the modes to achieve a "Master Higgins Feat" and you'll be awarded a Master Higgins costume.
Virtual Console
Clay Fighter (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, Rated T for Teen -- Comic Mischief and Mild Cartoon Violence, 800 Wii Points): In this zany 2-D fighter, it's just another day for a humble traveling circus troupe when a meteor crash-lands in their camp. The otherworldly orb, made entirely out of interstellar clay, contaminates all the circus employees, turning them into bizarrely superpowered versions of themselves. Choose from among the unique clay creatures, such as Bonker, the cheerfully manic clown, or Blue Suede Goo, the mild-mannered Elvis impersonator turned violent vocalist. Master their "Claytalities," like the operatic Helga's deadly high note and Bad Mr. Frosty's fists of snowball fury!
Nintendo adds new titles to the Nintendo DSi Shop and the Wii Shop Channel at 9 a.m. Pacific time on Mondays. Users with broadband Internet access can redeem Wii Points or Nintendo DSi Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel. Nintendo DSi Points can be purchased in the Nintendo DSi Shop. A Nintendo Points Card can be purchased at retail locations. All points from one Nintendo Points Card must be redeemed in either the Nintendo DSi Shop or the Wii Shop Channel. They are not transferable and cannot be divided between the two systems.
Remember that both Wii and Nintendo DSi feature parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit Wii.com or NintendoDSi.com.

Newly released:
description
Puchi Puchi Virus does not resemble the ordinary puzzle game. The usual object drop style was replaced with a more intuitive system of object linkage. Its simple design and surprisingly in-depth game play can addict even the most demanding puzzle game enthusiasts.
The object is to form at least a single triangle formation by linking viruses together and erasing them from the screen. Victory conditions vary from mission to mission, but erasing all of the viruses will be the fundamental rule of this game. Erase all the viruses and you win, but if the screen gets filled with the emerging viruses you lose.

Little Mac is back! Everyone’s favorite underdog from the 1980s joins the best of the original Punch-Out!! cast in a modern re-imagination of the series. Players will find familiar names like Glass Joe, King Hippo and trainer Doc Louis. These boxers come to life again in cel-shaded 3-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and back stories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!! games
The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play. The game can also be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote sideways
(Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers) Punch-Out!! uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches. Use the Nunchuk to throw a left punch and the Wii Remote to throw a right punch
(Wii Remote NES style) Fans of the NES version and core gamers will be excited to see Nintendo has also included the option to play Punch-Out!! using the classic layout from the original NES controller. Use the 1 and 2 buttons along with the cross pad to throw hooks and jabs or to dodge

Wii owners won’t miss out on brick busting. Arkanoid Plus is scheduled for WiiWare in Japan this week.
This version of Taito’s Breakout game has 61 stages in arcade mode and two final bosses. Players can test their speed in time attack mode and challenge a friend or computer in Vs. Mode.
The amount of content in Arkanoid Plus is about the same as Arkanoid Live, which came out on the Xbox 360 a few weeks ago. It’s unclear if this is a port of Xbox Live Arcade game or not. Both games share another common feature, downloadable content. Extra stages for Arkanoid Plus can be purchased for an additional fee. Arkanoid Plus costs 800 Wii Points ($8).

To celebrate the release of Punch-Out!!, Nintendo is offering a gift to European Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City players on Little Mac's behalf. Is it enough to bring prodigal Crossers back into the Wii game? Well, only those who love headgear. We kind of think the protective boxing equipment looks slightly supervillain-esque, which is a bonus.
From now until June 5, Let's Go to the City players who have WiiConnect24 on can get a gift of green boxing headgear just for turning the game on and checking their mail. The headgear will be stuffed into a letter. The item has yet to appear on the North American DLC hub, but we're confident American gamers will be able to protect their avatars' squishy heads soon.

Another strange week for DSiWare arrives, as Photo Clock appears on the store, doing little more than charging two dollars for limited functionality additions to the DSi. If you were looking for a good alarm for the DSi, this could be your week! Thankfully, American Popstar: Road to Celebrity is picking up the slack and ... wait, American Popstar? What?! Forget it, DSi! We're sticking with the Wii and snagging the remake of an 8-bit classic in Adventure Island: The Beginning instead. As always, jump past the break for all the messy details.
