Today Parisian developer Yullaby released the first details on its upcoming puzzle game for WiiWare, Magnetis. Here is the 'statement of intent,' straight from Yullaby's Hiromi Matsugi:
"We wanted to come up with an intuitive, arcade oriented puzzler concept. The object is simply to survive, and further, to beat the high score.
"Individual sessions of gameplay are short and tense, so the game can be played in multiple rapid sessions, or simply enjoyed as an informal, bite-sized manner.
"Magnetis' main attraction lies in its multiplayer gameplay, but mastery of the game's mechanics will come primarily from the solo modes. Their slower pace allows experimentation and training of skills, which can then be applied in multiplayer matches."

“Third-party games don’t sell on Wii.”
It’s a heated debate that is brought up all too often. Whether or not this theory holds any merit in the Western markets is up for debate.
However, one would be hard-pressed to present any evidence pointing to the contrary while monitoring the overall market situation in Japan. (If you haven’t been keeping up with with Japanese game market trends, I’d highly recommend NeoGAF’s excellent weekly Media Create threads.) Third-party sales on Wii in general are underwater and the recent release of the Monster Hunter G port can’t really be used as an accurate yardstick by which one could measure how well third-party games perform either.
It’s a disturbing situation to say the least and one that Nintendo president Satoru Iwata committed to addressing. From Nintendo’s financial results presentation for fiscal ‘09:
When we look at the situation of Wii in Japan, we cannot say that the mechanism which worked on DS is working on Wii. Two years after its launch in Japan, in the latter half of the previous fiscal year, we were not able to largely increase the ratio of third party publishers sales in Japan.
However in Japan, the much-anticipated Monster Hunter Tri will be launched in the coming summer. Several new strong Wii titles are expected to follow. We recognize that this is an important, challenging time for us. We will challenge to increase the presence of third party titles on Wii.
Interesting remark. “Several new strong Wii titles are expected to follow.” Is Iwata saying that the release of Monster Hunter 3 will influence other Japanese publishers to release more games for the system in the same way the “Dragon Quest IX for DS” announcement triggered a flood of DS RPGs? Keep in mind that DQX is going to be on Wii, too.
http://www.siliconera.com/2009/05/12...rgence-on-wii/
Or is he simply referring to the release of games that were shown off at last year’s October conference? Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see how Nintendo address the situation.

Nintendo of America hasn’t officially announced the Pokémon remakes, but they are preparing to do so. The publisher registered Pokémon Heart Gold and Pokémon Soul Silver in the US Patent and Trademark database. Both names were registered before the official announcement, which could mean Nintendo of America is planning a fast domestic launch.
Nintendo also appears to have a picture book game in development as suggested by a trademark for Picture Book Games: Pop-Up Pursuit in Japan and Europe. You, Me, and the Cubes is probably a localized version of Kimi to Boku to Rittai (You, Me, and the Solid Shape), a WiiWare game in Japan.

EA is delivering a second round of Hasbro board and puzzle game goodness to the Nintendo Wii this fall with Hasbro Family Game Night 2.
Building on the success of their first game night outing, Hasbro and EA are bringing five new old games to the Wii in Family Game Night 2. Headlining or perhaps flatlining the compilation, depending on how you play, is the classic board game Operation, which teaches children it's perfectly fine to remove a man's organs as long as his nose doesn't glow red. The rest of the titles are comparatively new, with Bop-It, Pictureka, Connect 4X4 (ouch) and Jenga, which makes this the second Jenga game available for the Wii.
Families and friends will be able to play the games in classic mode or the brand new "Hasbro Family Game Show" format, which has Mr. Potato Head hosting and players spinning a challenge wheel for a chance at big prizes.
Announced in conjunction with Game Night 2 is Hasbro Family Game Night for the Nintendo DS, featuring the same games from the first game in convenient portable form.
I make fun of the game, but I really appreciate the two companies' efforts to bring back the tradition of family game night in an easily digestible digital format. I probably could have done without a second dose of Jenga, but all in all it sounds like a nice collection.

It's not easy to get to the very final mission of Rockstar's DS Grand Theft Auto. But the number of people who have done so has doubled in the past month.
When last I checked to see how many people had jumped through the hoops to access the final two missions of Chinatown Wars, it was April 9 and 1,912 people had pulled it off.
They had finished the game's main missions, logged onto development studio Rockstar's hub website, synced their DS to that site, had that syncing operation deposit two statues in their game, found the statues, re-synced their stats and gotten themselves onto the listing of others who have done the same.
The game had been released on March 17, three weeks before I did my first count.
One month since that count, that number is 4,458, as can be seen on the Rockstar Social Club site (registration required). That many people have taken all the above steps, giving themselves new content and giving Rockstar a good look at their gaming stats.
(I'm #34 on that list. But I had an edge. Rockstar had hooked me up with a copy of the game for review a little early.)
We don't know how much Chinatown Wars has sold globally, but it had sold 89,000 copies in the U.S. by April 4. Those numbers aren't enough to indicate what percentage of Chinatown Wars players have completed the game.
But it's a small enough percentage to make gamers who have done it still feel special.

Nintendo celebrates the first year of WiiWare titles, highlighting some of the platforms big releases while looking forward to even greater games to come.
Nintendo says that WiiWare removes the economic barriers from console game development, and the past year in WiiWare releases certainly holds true to their claim. Of the 81 WiiWare titles currently available in North America, more than half were created by small independent studios without the aid of a publisher. More than 40 developers have contributed to WiiWare so far, with games like World of Goo, BIT.TRIP BEAT, , and LIT showing off what can be accomplished on a console when publishing restrictions are relaxed.
"The first anniversary of our WiiWare service is a milestone that marks how far the service has come and how much great content is currently available," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We encourage everyone to get their Wii consoles connected to the Internet so they have access to the full range of WiiWare games."
So what's in store for Wii owners in the coming year?
The list of upcoming titles is arguably far more impressive than anything that's already been released. Nicalis' Cave Story alone is enough to get the heart of any indie game fan pumping, with Super Meat Boy from Team Meat also adding a bit more flavor to the mix. Over the Top Games will be releasing Icarian Kindred Spirits, which is about a winged girl named Nyx who descends from heaven to find her lost friend Icarus in a game that might be the closest we get to a Kid Icarus sequel. Aksys follows up BIT.TRIP BEAT with BIT.TRIP CORE, and Square Enix is sure to outsell everyone with the release of Final Fantasy IV: The After Years.
So how has WiiWare treated you this year? Despite having covered the Nintendo Download nearly every week since WiiWare launched, I've only purchased two titles myself - Lost Winds and Pokemon Ranch. I've been meaning to pick up BIT.TRIP BEAT but simply haven't found the time. So that's three out of 81 that have piqued my interest. How about you folks?

Konami has announced that Wii party game Dance Dance Revolution Hottest Party 2 will be out on 26th June.
You'll be able to buy the game solus or bundled with a dance mat, the square piece of plastic that people jump around on. The bundle costs around 50 quid, and the separate mats are roughly a tenner.
Matching footsteps to arrows on-screen will be only one element, however, as Konami has included Wii motion controls to make things tougher. Players can set calorie goals or tailor-make a strenuous playlist for a sweaty afternoon, we're told.
Miis can be used in-game and players can take on a friend in multiplayer. We're told there are 50 songs in total, featuring "Umbrella", "Walking on Sunshine" and "You're The One That I Want".

Nintendo console one of the most popular items on couples’ wedding lists at John Lewis
John Lewis has revealed the Wii is now one of the top 20 most popular items to appear on couple’s wedding lists.
The Telegraph reports the Nintendo console joins other tech gifts, such as an iPod or flat-screen television, and traditional items such as crockery and cooking equipment.
John Lewis’ senior Gift List analyst Tracey Yates said: “Two years ago, the top 20 products on the Gift List were exclusively traditional items from linens, kitchenware, china and glass but, in the second half of last year, the Wii made it to the Top 20.”
Similar trends can be seen at other retailers. Debenhams has stated that the most requested gifts on wedding lists are iPods and TVs, as well as cash or vouchers.

The sequel to Wii launch title Red Steel will only support Wii MotionPlus, meaning you won't be able to play it using just a regular Wii Remote.
"It's a huge risk," said the game's creative director, Jason Vandenberghe. "We have no idea what the penetration rate for Wii MotionPlus will be. We assume high. We would like it to be high.
"I would love to say to you that it'll be compatible with just a regular controller, but the gameplay simply isn't there without MotionPlus. That core experience just isn't there without it," he added, speaking in the latest issue of Nintendo Power (via Nintendo Dpad).
Nintendo's motion-sensing MotionPlus peripheral will release next month, promising to deliver "more comprehensive tracking of a player's arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion".
Sword and gunplay action sequel Red Steel 2 will be launching in time for Christmas.

The home console debut and second DS outing for Maxis’ popular universe sim Spore have been officially revealed by publisher EA, with both titles due to hit retail by the end of the year.
Spore Hero, the first Wii version of the series, offers ‘an accessible, story-driven action-adventure’. Players must create an individual hero and set out on a mission to save their home world. The DS, outing, Spore Hero Arenas, is a galaxy-based arena combat outing. Both titles are fully 3D.
“When Maxis first considered bringing Spore to console players, the Nintendo platforms jumped out as a perfect fit,” Maxis’ VP and general manager Lucy Bradshaw stated. “Whether it is the stylus-driven action of the Nintendo DS or playful controllers of the Wii, the massive Nintendo audience is the ideal home for Spore Hero and Spore Hero Arena.
“Nintendo fans will love the humour, ability to create their own Hero, fun gameplay and immersive storylines we’re creating for these two games."

Why should authentic, honest-to-goodness Wii owners be the only ones to indulge in some mindless escapism -- or a spirited virtual workout, for that matter? To this end, the heads at Chinavasion have dreamt up a two-tone, quasi-legal Balance Board KIRF for you and your game console. Sure, this is by no means the first such beast we've seen, and there's no telling whether or not this bad boy is compatible with your WÜ, MiWi2, or Chintendo Vii, but it does sport handsome light blue accents. Take one home for $67.91, or save a few shekles and buy 'em in lots of three or more. Intrigued?

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is just a couple of weeks away from its Japanese release. Wondering what Square Enix will follow up with for DS owners?
We got somewhat of a hint today as Square Enix at long last broke its silence about SaGa 2, the Japanese version of the DS remake of a Game Boy game that was originally released in America as Final Fantasy Legend II. While announced last year, Square Enix today gave the game an official name, a proper official site, and a release time period.
Previously, the Japanese version was known by the placeholder name SaGa 2: Hiho Densetsu (roughly, "Legend of the Treasure"). The final name is now SaGa 2: Hiho Densetsu Goddess of Destiny.
Of course, this name is just for the Japanese version. There's no word yet on what Square Enix will do with the naming for the international versions. We imagine they might end up keeping the SaGa name this time, since it's the 21st century and all.
The official site is now home to, among other things, actual color artwork, and a trailer movie. You can access the movie under the (you guessed it!) "trailer" icon.
SaGa 2 is now due for Japanese release some time this Fall. Hopefully the wait for an English version won't be too long. To hold you over a bit after you've checked out the trailer, be sure and browse the new screens we've posted.

Yossi has released iiii v2.0. Now with shiny new AI.
The game is a digital clone of the popular retail and pen-and-paper game "Connect 4". It is similar to Tic-Tac-Toe. The rules are simple. You take turns with another player to drop red or black pieces into the board. Pieces fall in from the top and slide down to stack up on top of each other. The goal is to get 4 of your pieces touching in a straight line (diagonals also count) before your opponent does.
v2.0
added AI by Keith Pomakis
rewrote win() to be smarter (pointless now that I found that AI, but it was a lot of work so I'm adding it here anyway)
wiimote can be held sideways (push two (2) to drop)
misc. cleanup
