Finally, your lovingly prepared SNES model is getting some well-heeled new friends to hang out with. Cubeecraft is a website wholly dedicated to the paper-based recreation of cultural icons, and it's prepared a pair of exquisitely detailed clones of the NES and Dreamcast. While some such projects might require patience and finesse, putting together the above templates doesn't even ask for any glue or tape. So what are you waiting for, grab your scissors and run to the links below for full 150dpi printouts -- just be sure to make the time for some imaginary Contra action afterwards.

While it seemed that all was going well for the Big N, it looks like those jovial times are finally coming to a (temporary) end. In an earnings report filed today, the company posted a 66 percent fall in quarterly operating profit on "slowing demand for its Wii console and a stronger yen." It's not so much the profit slide that's surprising, but the sudden admission that Wii demand has finally (finally!) slowed from a raging boil to simply piping hot definitely caught us off guard. Still, Nintendo maintained that it would sell 26 million Wii consoles before the year was out alongside 30 million DS handhelds, the latter of which has seen momentum slow due to "increased competition in the handheld business from Apple's iPhone." Now, we've known for some time that the suits in Cupertino have always viewed the iPhone as a game console, but to hear it called out as such from an entity not named Apple is another matter entirely. Maybe it should reconsider that whole "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" thing? Nah.

An interface developer at UK dev Telltale Games has publicly claimed he believes the iPhone to be more powerful than Nintendo’s Wii.
Telltale Games has finished developing new Monkey Island episodic content for both the PC and Wii, sold via digital platforms Steam and Wii Ware.
The group was not responsible for the iPhone remake of the original Monkey Island game, which was released contemporaneously.
Nevertheless, a developer on the official TellTale forums claims that “the Wii and DS are extremely underpowered and their popularity doesn't remove the hardware limitations."
Contained within the same thread are a number of complaints surrounding apparent framerate and quality issues on the Wii Monkey Island game.
"The voices and textures are the way they are because we're limited to 40 megs for WiiWare titles. The PC versions of our games are usually 150+ megs, and most modern games range anywhere from one to ten gigabytes or more. Talk to Nintendo about this one.”
The developer, given the pseudonym Yare, said that the “frame rate issues will probably get sorted out eventually, but keep in mind that the Wii is just not a powerful console. An iPhone is much more powerful than a Wii, even."
Yare introduced himself to the forums back in March as “the engineer responsible for the controls” on Telltale’s Wallace and Gromit episodic games.
Elsewhere in the thread he defended his comments, claiming that it wasn't his intent to “blame” the platform for its technical performance.
“I just thought some people might be interested in an explanation of how game development works, why the Wii version has lower quality voice, higher compression, and so on,” he said.

Why are titles such as The Conduit and MadWorld not selling on Wii? No one knows, including Nintendo.
Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs Denise Kaigle told Wired the company is unsure of why its third-party hardcore titles continue to sit on store shelves.
"You know, I don't know. It's hard to say. It could be titles have the same type of sales curve that a lot of Nintendo titles have," said Kaigler.
"A lot of Nintendo titles don't follow that traditional sales curve where they launch big and then that's it. Our titles have a long tail."
Kaigler would continue on to say that she's hopeful sales pickup eventually, and asks fans to help spread the word.
"We're hopeful that the titles will catch on and that consumers who already have those games will spread the word and others will follow suit there. They're deep experiences, and they're very challenging titles, and we certainly like them. But it's our hope that the games will pick up in popularity and they'll continue to sell."

French publisher suffers 67% drop in DS software sales over the last year
It was once the leading light in third party casual software publishing on DS but in today’s quickly changing market Ubisoft has suffered a stark change in fortunes. In the last 12 months the company has seen sales of its DS titles fall by a huge 67 per cent.
However, Ubisoft’s market share of the DS software market has remained exactly the same – proof that the overall DS software market is in freefall.
“The DS is declining quickly,” boss Yves Guillemot stated. “The casual business is changing rapidly and we have to reinvent it this year. We already have a big shift from DS to Wii this year and it will continue with the Wii and Xbox 360 new camera next year.
“What we are seeing in Europe, especially on the DS, is that the piracy is strong so we are working to put new figurines and new elements in the box that will change that for the future.
“But in the short-term it's affecting us. For example in Europe we have the same market share on DS as last year, so it's really the market which is declining. Retail, because of that, is less active on the format.”
And the result is that in the same way Ubisoft quickly re-aligned its business to focus on the DS in 2007 and 2008, the coming years will see that focus shift once again.
Ubisoft’s executive dorector Alain Corre added: “We expect the Wii to account for 40 per cent of sales in our causal label versus last year when it was at 18 per cent, so it's a big change.”

David Perry reveals his ambition to take the cloud-computing service to consoles
David Perry has revealed he is eager to see the cloud-computing service Gaikai available on consoles, and thinks Nintendo would benefit from the service in particular.
In a Develop Blog Post – which looks at the genesis of the Gaikai model – the Perry explained,
“What I would love to do is have the hardware manufacturers support our embedded streams. I’d like them to support our custom stream and then allow live demos of the games on the consoles themselves.”

suloku has released Open Sram Language Modifier v3
This is an application to toggle sram settings such as the mono/stereo setting and the language used by gamecube games and the system IPL. The goal of this app is to make PAL gamecube games run on a NTSC gamecube/wii with the desired language, because all PAL games will play in english on a NSTC environment.
This is a clone of emu_kidid's sram language modifier 1.1 and it has the same features.
I made this in the hope of it working on the wii, using yagd and libogc functions.
http://hitmen.c02.at/files/yagcd/yag...0.html#sec10.5
The "open" is just to differ it from emu_kidid's, as he lost the source and I couldn't find a better name, sorry for that.
Version 3 - 28 July 2009
Added SRAM Hex view.
Added power and reset button callbacks

HtheB proposes a new version of "BEUPA Live", the adaptation of the famous instant messaging client Live Messenger for the DS, which is now in version 0.5.
Quote:
Changelog:
You can login to Live BEUPA now, it will not kick you directly after you login.
The issues in BEUPA Live 0.5 (Emergency Release) are:
- After 1 minute, you can not change your status and nickname anymore.
- The persons in your contact list will see you as offline after 1 minute.
You can not change this unless you just login to BEUPA Live again
(since MSN is thinking you are not online anymore)
- After 1 minute, you can still chat, but only to the contacts which you
are already talking with (as long as the session is alive!)
- You will not see new contacts coming online or going offline.
To refresh, just logout and login again

News via dsscene
I have released an update to DS Game Maker. There has been much anticipation for this release and it is a major milestone in the development of the program.
The most exciting developments in the release, which makes the most recent version 'DS Game Maker 3.0', are, global Copy and Paste, a Pack and Go tool, the fact that devkitPro is now the only system requirement and many many bug fixes. Overall, the entire user experience is enhanced and using the program is more productive.
Whats New:
Global Copy and Paste of Sprites, Backgrounds, Fonts, Sounds and even Rooms - with Actions, Sprites and Backgrounds intact (an exact copy).
PAlib is now included with DS Game Maker and the PAPATH Envirionment Variable is not required. The only System Requirement now is the devkitPro toolchain.
'Pack and Go' feature added. This gathers all the project's resources and the XDS into a ZIP file. It can be extracted anywhere and the XDS will open with the graphics etc. loading fine. This is great if you need help; Pack 'n' Go your project and upload it to the forum.
Added a Right Click menu to the Actions list. Useful, you don't have to constantly move up to the tiny controls at the top right of the window. Items on the menu for an action/selection of actions: Duplicate, Delete, Copy to Room, Move to Room, Shift Up/Down, Move to Top/Bottom.
The following features have come available in the Free Edition of DS Game Maker: Show scrollbars, Turn on/off transparency. Scroll bar area is now correctly sized so that sprites do not wrap (thanks PAlib wiki).
Guitar Hero controller support in the Registered Edition.
Saving support in the Registered Edition with Save Variable and Load Variable actions.
Ability to download the latest copy of the Registered Actions without having to Re-enter a Registration Key.
Alot of verification when renaming resources, for your protection. For instance characters like commas and brackets are now banned to prevent compile errors and the program does basic checks for programming terms in names too, for example "main" or "int".
Fixed a minor bug where the includes folder was not cleared on compile when it should have been like efsroot. Fixed, and thanks, Eldude!
Fixed a problem where users could get away with changing the 3 Description Texts by editing them outside DS Game Maker. This is now impossible.

The global release of a movie store for Nintendo's Wii is on the cards, according to comments from Lionsgate's president of digital media Curt Mavis.
"I imagine the Wii's movie store will launch worldwide soon" Mavis told Casualgaming.biz (thanks, Joystiq), before going on to outline the potential of such a service; "Our horror and action movies are ideal for the Xbox and PlayStation's hardcore audience," he said "while the broader audience of the Wii are likely to enjoy our more mass-market properties."
A film streaming service is already available for the Wii in Japan, while rumours have been circulating that Netflix could facilitate such a service in the States.
