EA is ready to take Need for Speed Nitro out of the garage and onto the road on November 17th. The Wii- and DS-exclusive title is designed to offer "fun and intense competition for every type of gamer." This wouldn't be the first time a more casual approach reinvigorated a franchise.
Nitro, like upcoming scarefest Dead Space Extraction, is part of EA's ongoing effort to establish some big hits on Nintendo's console. Other titles from the test lab, like EA Sports Active and the Tiger Woods 10, have already proven to be quite successful. Let's see if EA can keep up the Wii streak!

Platform holder predicts that “the right game” could produce a further 150m console gamers
Speaking at the CGA’s ongoing Casual Connect event in Seattle, Nintendo of America’s senior director of product development Tom Prata has predicted that despite the recent boom in the target audience of the console game market the sector could still be set for 50 per cent more growth in the coming years.

Interchannel announced Kyarachenko, a mini-game collection with a make your own paper avatar feature. Have a DSi? Then you can stamp your face on your creation.
When you play the title’s ten games like Treasure Hunter or Touch Shooting, which looks like it has players tap custom characters to shoot them, you earn extra parts. Particularly interesting for the Siliconera crowd is some kind of RPG battle game that features the paper-thin characters.
There are over 1,000 parts ranging from astronaut gear to Solid Snake look a like (watch the video) to collect.
Kyarachenko comes out in Japan this fall. A North American release has not been announced, but a representative from Interchannel explained they are “talking with publishers.”

Don't even start weaving conspiracies about how Nintendo's recently released Wii MotionPlus peripheral was supposed to be incorporated in the initial Wiimote design. According to Shigeru Miyamoto, such a nickel-and-dime plot is absolutely impossible -- and as we all know, Miyamoto never lies. Look at him, with those pinchable cheeks! Those are not the cheeks of a liar.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Shiggy explained the MotionPlus was only possible due to technological innovations "which took place after Wii launched." Actually, he says the technology was around, but it would have been impossible to use at such a "compact" size and low price. So, did you want Wiimotes to cost $200 and weigh as much as toddlers? No? We didn't think so.

Both Level-5’s new properties are being successfully spun off into a variety of media; Inazuma Eleven with a lengthy anime series and Professor Layton as a new animated movie. Like Inazuma Eleven, Layton has a manga that serializes in CoroCoro magazine, too.
The movie trailer above is from the official Layton website. You can watch two new short trailers on there as well.
Considering how well Layton has done in the West, it isn’t a stretch of the imagination to assume that someone will end up licensing the movie in the U.S. Whether it’s Nintendo or Level-5, or an anime licensee like Funimation (they get all the good stuff nowadays) remains to be seen though.
Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva will release in Japanese theatres on December 19th. Anime News Network reports that a Layton live-action movie is in the works, too.

Field research time! Website Gpara wandered up and down train carriages on Tokyo's Yamanote Line, looking for players using R4 piracy devices.
Since R4 piracy devices use cartridges with SD Card slots, it was possible
Gpara deployed on trains last week — and did profiles of the DS players it spied on the train. Those profiles include the approximate ages, gender, type (student, salaryman, etc), what platform the individual was using and the approximate time window.
On the first day, Gpara spotted 106 individuals on the train playing the DS throughout a chunk of the day. Out of those, five of them were using R4-type piracy devices — four of them were men, and one was a female college student. One of those five, a businessman, was using the piracy device to play Dragon Quest IX.
During the second day, Gpara observed 109 individuals on the train playing the DS. Out of those 15 individuals were using a R4-type device to play DS games with only one playing a pirated version of DQIX. The pirates varied from middle school students to college students to female office workers to businessmen.
And you thought all pirates looked piratey, ha! Wrong!

You poor thing. You didn't watch the videos, did you? You went and bought Indiana Jones: Staff of Kings on Wii, thinking "what could go wrong?", and now, you're left thinking "well, everything can go wrong". Not quite!
Your purchase can still be salvaged. oracrest over on NeoGAF has whipped up a high-res version of an improved slip cover for the game, which will mask your shame by removing all mention of Staff of Kings. Instead, print this off and you'll have a terribly official-looking cover for Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Lucasarts' classic adventure game that's included as an extra with the Wii game.
Kinda makes you wish Lucasarts were just doing it themselves, no? Release a whole load of them, $20 each, give people a nice piece of box to put on their shelf.

Sega has lifted the lid on a brand new instalment to its popular Monkey Ball franchise – brand new Wii title Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll.
More or less nothing is known of the game as of yet, though the publisher promises fresh information the coming weeks. We do know, however, that it will support the use of the Wii Balance Board.
Super Monkey Ball quickly won a cult following upon its release on GameCube in 2000. It has since gone on to spawn seven further outings, including a version on the iPhone which topped the sales charts upon the debut of the Apple App Store.

World of Goo developer 2DBoy has said that its next full game is a WiiWare title also derived from its Experimental Gameplay Project output.
"The three of us are cooking up a new game for WiiWare, currently 'in the works'," Kyle Gabler told Nintendodpad (thanks Offworld).
"We haven't mentioned anything about it to anyone, but here's a clue - the new game from the three of us is based on one of the experimental games from our past."
The three of us, in this case, also includes one of Henry Hatsworth's designers, Kyle Gray, and World of Goo programmer Allan Blomquist.
The fact Gabler and company are heading back to their experimental roots should come as no surprise, given that the fabulous World of Goo (check out our fawning PC and WiiWare reviews) began life as Tower of Goo.
The Experimental Gameplay Project, founded by Gabler and Gray, sees a group of friendly developers do battle on a monthly basis, each spending up to seven days making a small game.

Nintendo only adds four titles to the Wii and DS this week, with the Virtual Console passed up completely, but hey...one of the games has "Final Fantasy" in it, and the kids love Final Fantasy.
Of course it also has "Crystal Chronicles" in it, which tends to make many a Final Fantasy fan cringe, but we won't hold that against Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord for WiiWare (1,000 points). It's a different kind of tower defense game, in which the player places monsters and traps throughout his or her tower, in order to keep heroes from getting to the Dark Crystal on the top floor. Hopefully no Gelflings show up. Damn Gelflings.
Along with the game itself, Square Enix has also released two packs of downloadable content for My Life as a Darklord, getting an early jump on a little extra-added revenue. 400 points scores you the Darklord Armory, adding four destructive spells and one healing spell to your arsenal, each useable once per battle. For 200 points you can purchase the Vile Ribbon, an accessory for the game's protagonist Mira that adds 50 NP to your pool before every battle. And no, I don't know what NP are either, but 50 of them are worth $2.
My Life as a Darklord is joined on WiiWare by Battle Poker (800 points), which is standard poker with a card grabbing twist, and 5 Spots Party (500 points), a game that challenges players to find five differences between a pair of similar pictures. 5 Spots Party also wins the least intriguing game name of the year award.
A lone DSiWare title rounds out this week's list. Art Style: Zengage (500 DSi points) is a sliding square matching puzzle with more than 100 stages taking place in a surreal world, and at this point I'm not sure the description even matters. The Art Style series has slipped into collectible status for me on the DSi, with any title prefaced by those words an automatic download. Let's hope Nintendo doesn't abuse this power. Art Style: Barbie Princess? Noooooo!
