Bushing posted this request/newspost on Hackmii:
I’m working on another post about the history of hardware revisions on the Wii, but am having trouble collecting the data that I need.
I’ll give more info about all of this in my next post, but in brief — I have only ever seen three PCB revisions on the Wii:
C/RVL-CPU-01 vs C/RVL-CPU-30:
C/RVL-CPU-20:
From C/RVL-CPU-20
The PCB revision ID is found in the lower-right of the PCB, below the “Nintendo” logo. I would be interested in any photos people can give me of the PCBs of their Wii, particularly if
The heatsink is removed, and all of the writing on the two large chips (Hollywood and Broadway) is readable
The Wii was purchased in 2009 and/or is “unsoftmoddable” / “LU64+” / has boot2v4
Any more details you can provide along with the picture would be appreciated — specifically, console ID, boot1 and boot2 versions, approximate date of purchase, serial number printed on outside of Wii. I won’t publish this info individually, but I’m trying to show how the progression over time matches up with the software changes in my previous post.
You can either post the info and photo links here as comments, or email them to me at bushing at gmail.
Thanks!

The official site for The Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden reveals the upcoming DS RPG has a four player mode. Unfortunately, Square Enix is keeping it under wraps.
Matrix Software, the developer of the Final Fantasy III and Final Fantasy IV remakes, is also making The Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden. Other familiar staff members from the DS remakes include Tomoya Asano and Takashi Tokita, one of the original staff members of Final Fantasy IV — for the Super Nintendo. Tokita says this game is a “classic fantasy RPG with today’s technology.”
The Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden comes out in Japan this fall. Square Enix has not announced any plans to publish this overseas, but if they do I imagine the name will be something like Final Fantasy Gaiden: The Four Light Warriors or something like that.

This fall Japan gets the DS version of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and it’s rated CERO Z, that’s like the equivalent of being rated AO by the ESRB.
All of the Grand Theft Auto games have been rated CERO Z so this isn’t really a shocker. However, Chinatown Wars will be the first Nintendo DS game with the rating and the second CERO Z game on a Nintendo platform. Killer 7 from Capcom is the other CERO Z rated game on Nintendo hardware.
Capcom usually publishes Grand Theft Auto games in Japan, but they are not handling Chinatown Wars. Cyberfront, the company that published the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV and the Princess Maker series, will take care of Chinatown Wars in Japan.
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars has often been used as a centerpiece in a debate if M-rated DS games will sell. This fall Chinatown Wars will also be a litmus test for 18+ Nintendo DS games in Japan too.

Super Mario Galaxy has incredible art design, but in standard def, the game can just be so visually disappointing compared to its potential hinted at onscreen. So what would it look like in 720P HD? Like this.
Pumped through a Wii PC emulator, these images are just upscaled versions of the SMG's existing graphics—in other words, you're not even seeing what advanced hardware/graphics engines can do with additional texture or lighting. But with a boost in sharpness alone (more pixels), the Wii looks simply splendid in HD. Edges are smooth and objects are crisp, which is really all you need with Nintendo's trademark artistic style. Yeah, I hope that analysts predicting a Wii HD aren't totally full of it.

interesting WiiMote based project. [Mans] is a tennis fan, though a bit out of practice. With the tennis season coming to a rather climactic end, he got excited and wanted to brush up on his skills. He found the toss part of his serve to be very sloppy. Being a hacker, the first thing he thought was that there must be some way of tracking and graphing his toss so that he could improve it in an intelligent and controlled manner. The WiiMote seemed a perfect fit for this. Only a small modification was necessary, an external button wired to the internal “-” button. This switch is active while he’s holding the ball, and inactive when the ball is released. In this manner, he can track and chart his toss to find out exactly where he needs improvement. He uses [Johnny Chung Lee]’s code, with a small but unspecified modification to write the accelerometer data to a text file.
As he points out, this could be very usefull for any repetitive movement. Whith accelerometers getting cheaper and cheaper, there’s nothing stopping you from using multiple ones either. Imagine a golf rig to analyze your swing, Maybe a boxing rig that measured your hip twist and arm extension, or possibly a yoyo glove to tell you if your flick needs some help. Great job [Mans].

Pharma firm Bayer has created a DS plug-in built on the idea that diabetic kids typically lose track of no-fun things like glucose meters, but rarely lose fun things like gaming handhelds.
No, the "Didget" isn't a kind of Vitality Sensor; it goes into the DS/DS Lite's Slot-2 and rewards players giving consistent readings with points in a game that can be used to buy items or unlock levels. It doesn't sound like the game itself has anything to do with diabetes or testing, it's just the vessel through which the Didget rewards a player's consistent monitoring.
I'm not in a household with a diabetic child, but I was in one with a recently diagnosed adult; I can testify that testing yourself can be a real bitch, and doing it consistently requires some discipline, which younger kids may not have. The Didget sounds like a helpful peripheral, although some might think buying a video game attachment rewards, rather than corrects, a kid not taking responsibility for himself. I guess it depends on the age. One thing, however, since this requires Slot-2, it's not DSi compatible.

Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii are the UK's best selling games of 2009 so far, according to GfK Chart-Track figures distributed by ELSPA.
With combined sales of 1.65 million units, the three titles make up 72 per cent of the sales volume of the top five best sellers. They're followed by Professor Layton and the Curious Village at number four, and the Sony first party title Killzone 2 at number five.
Cross platform titles Resident Evil 5 and Call of Duty: World At War take the number six and number nine places respectively, while EA gets one PC-exclusive title - The Sims 3, which was only released one month ago - into the number eight position.
ELSPA uses the latest data as evidence family-orientated and educational games have become the most popular genres with UK consumers, pointing to the sales figures for Wii Fit and Wii Play, as well as the continued success of Dr Kawashima's Brain Training, to illustrate its point.
Dr Kawashima sits at number seven in the chart and this year's sales now make it the most popular game in the UK ever, having sold over three million units.
"These figures are clear evidence that gaming is now mainstream in the UK," said Michael Rawlinson, director general of ELSPA. "The demographic has changed, so it’s time we did away with the misperception that videogames are merely the preserve of teenage boys shooting zombies. Innovation in the industry means the social and educational benefits of gaming are now enjoyed by players of both sexes and of all ages."
Overall, the performance figures for 2009 so far are the second best the UK has seen to date. Year-on-year sales are down 5.7 per cent however, with 29.7 million units sold compared to 31.5 million units for the same period in 2008. The results should still encourage the UK games industry though, according to Dorian Bloch, business group director of GfK Chart-Track, who commented:
"The videogame entertainment markets show that across software, hardware and accessories, the first half of 2009 is a solid platform for retailers, manufacturers and publishers to build momentum into the last quarter of 2009. The widening demographic and the growing trend in physical-motion gaming, means the industry is well positioned to see further growth."
The overall UK console installed base now stands at 24.2 million units - which is around the same number as there are UK households. The full install figures for each console as of June 27, 2009 can be found here.
This growth in popularity for gaming is further underlined in a report by the Neilsen Research for the Interactive Software Federation of Europe which shows that 33 per cent of the UK population between the ages of 30 and 49 describe themselves as 'active gamers' and 82 per cent say they play videogames with their children.
The full chart of UK best-selling software for the first half of 2009 follows.
01 Wii Fit
02 Wii Play
03 Mario Kart Wii
04 Professor Layton and the Curious Village
05 Killzone 2
06 Resident Evil 5
07 Dr Kawashima's Brain Training
08 The Sims 3
09 Call of Duty: World At War
10 Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games

The popularity of mainstream gaming has seen a slew of casual titles dominate the half year 2009 charts, with ELSPA GfK-ChartTrack’s numbers showing that accessible titles have bossed the UK High Street so far this year.
Topping the list is Nintendo’s Wii Fit, which combined with Wii Play (second in the chart) and Mario Kart Wii (third) so far in 2009 represent total sales of 1.65m – a number that represents 75 per cent of the top five’s total sales.
In the same period Nintendo’s Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training saw its total UK sales surpass 3m, making it the most popular game ever in this country. The game itself finished seventh in the chart.
Other casual titles doing well in the listing were Nintendo’s puzzle curiosity Professor Layton and the Curious Village (fourth) and Sega’s Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (tenth).
“These figures are clear evidence that gaming is now mainstream in the UK,” ELSPA director general Michael Rawlinson stated.
“The demographic has changed, so it’s time we did away with the misperception that videogames are merely the preserve of teenage boys shooting zombies. Innovation in the industry means the social and educational benefits of gaming are now enjoyed by players of both sexes and of all ages.”

Meraman, probably best known for his Tetris Grand Master Challenge adaptation has recently completed work on NDS_MIDDRV_DEV. This provides the user with the ability to play back midi background music for homebrew games development, and also provides a very useful midi/mml player application 'BGMFILER' with tone editing facilities that runs on the DS itself. Great work!

Hmm found this over at Wiibrew so it must be deemed legitamate for Homebrew usage:
Dop-IOS lets you download and install any IOS from Nintendo servers. You can also apply the trucha bug to them.
Features
Download any IOS from Nintendo servers
Select between oldest version or newest version of any IOS
You can apply the signature hash check (trucha) again
You can also apply ES_Identify function patch to IOS36 (useful for AnyTitle Deleter and >3.4 users)
Protection: you cannot install stubs. You could get a brick if you install an stub IOS that your System Menu uses. If you want them, just update through Wii menu or disc.
Stores files on SD: you can reuse all your downloaded IOS with Dop-IOS or another application.
Shows your IOS versions
Why?
Dop-IOS started as a simple modification of Tona's Shop Installer. I wanted to trucha patch my IOS36 in order to play my Super Smash Bros. Brawl texture modifications on 4.0. I could install an older version of IOS36, but then my original games like Pikmin 2 or Punch-Out always asked me to update. These games include 3.4 update with all bugfixed IOS. So the only way to get trucha games on 3.4/4.0 without being asked to update by newest games was to download latest IOS36, patch and install it.
If you are on 3.4 'dop' IOS50, if you are on 4.0 'dop' IOS60. Then you will be able to load trucha games on System Menu (with a modchip, of course). Now you must 'dop' other IOS:
IOS36 (for Smash Bros. Brawl and other Nintendo games)
IOS21 (for third-party games like No More Heroes or Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 3)
Some games could use another IOS. You only need to know which IOS they use and 'dop' it.
Brick risk?
Yes. Any application that modifies NAND can brick your console.
Be careful when you are going to 'dop' the IOS that your System Menu uses. A power cut during installation can brick your Wii.
Also, don't try to 'dop' IOS60 if you are using Preloader, because you can get a brick.
History
Version 4
It seems that ES_Identify patch can be buggy in other IOS than 36. So now Dop-IOS is able to apply this patch only on IOS36.
SD files now are stored on sd:/00000001 and they can be used in other applications.
Now Dop-IOS v4 shows your installed IOS versions!

Simon Kagstrom has released a new version of his Amiga Emulator for the Nintendo Wii, heres the news from his blog:
I bought 2GB RAM for my laptop today. What a difference compared to 1GB! Now firefox, eclipse and mytourbook (267 km since may 27!) are actually possible to run together. Good investment and something I'd recommend anyone with a slightly old laptop.
I've also released version 3 of UAE-Wii today. It really only contains two things: a fix for a bug which prevented dialogue windows from showing and support for Cloanto Amiga forever kickstart ROMs out of the box.
You can also see it as an answer to the (frequent) question "where do I get a kickstart ROM for UAE?". Easy - just buy the Amiga forever CD and copy them from there. It's good value for money since it's quite cheap and contains a set of games/demos as well.
Cloanto was nice enough to send me a copy of the Amiga forever CD for free - it was even the deluxe edition which packs two DVDs with Amiga-related videos. I've so far only watched Dave Haynies documentary about the collapse of commodore. While the subject is interesting, the documentary is filmed with a (shaky) handheld camera by Haynies himself, so I can't really recommend it to anyone but the real enthusiasts or the truly drunk.

Third-party publisher Xseed Games revealed exclusively to IGN on Friday that it intends to release the critically acclaimed arcade flight simulator, The Sky Crawlers, in America. The title, officially named The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces, will ship stateside in time for the holiday season, a representative for the company confirmed.
Developed by Project Aces, best known for the Ace Combat series, Sky Crawlers pits players as pilots in an alternate future in which peace and prosperity has finally arrived -- and yet, warmongering citizens of the world cannot accept it. To appease the people, the government allows private wars between giant corporations. "It is the battles fought by these war contracted corporations... and media reports on them... that satisfy and replace the basic human instinct to fight using the war as a show," stated Xseed Games of the story in an official release.
You play as the latest rookie pilot, Lynx, to join the Sky Crawlers, who becomes involved in a secret new military project whose goal is to make pilots immortal. You will "... join Lynx on his journey to conquer the skies while unraveling the mystery behind the military's covert new project."
"I'm extremely pleased to be able to confirm The Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces for gamers in North America," said Jun Iwasaki, president of Xseed Games. "The innovative control scheme and gorgeous visuals just go to show what a top-notch development team can do when creating a new game from scratch specifically for Wii."

Electroplankton is one Nintendo’s unusual DS titles because it’s not really a game. Electroplankton is a music making tool with neon fish.
You can make chiptunes by poking algae-like Electroplankton in BeatNES and create a symphony (or in my case a cacophony) by drawing paths in Tracy.
Since Electroplankton got a limited release it is sort of rare, but soon Nintendo DSi owners will get a chance to pick up a digital version of the game… in pieces. The ten programs in Electroplankton will be sold as separate DSiWare titles, each priced at 200 DSiWare Points ($2). Electroplankton originally retailed for 4,800 yen ($50) so this is a fair deal.
