The National Science Foundation has given two universities a million dollars to study whether video games can improve thinking skills in the elderly. They're using Boom Blox in the research.
The grant to the universities - N.C. State and Georgia Tech - is part of the federal stimulus package and will span four years of research. Phase one of this study will seek to identify the qualities a game must have to improve cognition - memory, problem-solving, critical thinking and the like."
"We want to determine the components an effective game should have," said Dr. Anne McLaughlin, an assistant professor of psychology at N.C. State, and the study's principal investigator.
After determining which game qualities deliver the greatest improvement in cognitive function, phase two will seek to develop guidelines for "a new class of video game for older adults," and also develop a prototype game that follows those guidelines. State seems to be supplying the analysis, with Tech coming in to create the game. The study will last from September this year to August 2013.
Boom Blox was chosen as the study game because its "novelty, attentional demand and social interaction may be manipulated by the researchers."
I think it's significant for a number of reasons: They're moving the Wii-as-therapy fad beyond the examination of physical benefits. They're starting with a reasonably current and commercially successful title. And they're trying to spur games development. (And I went to N.C. State, but no one should really care about that.)

Capcom has squashed the dreams of those hopeful its newest cross-over fighter, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, will come to PS3 and/or Xbox 360. Speaking to VideoGamer.com, the game's producer, Ryota Niitsuma, stated that the effort required to port the heavily Wii-optimized title would be considerable. "If we were to port it to PS3 or Xbox 360 we would have to make the game from scratch, and in that case we might as well just make a sequel of the series on those consoles rather than porting it," he told the site.
Not confirmation of a sequel, but a promising comment nonetheless. Niitsuma said that "we would like to see the reaction of the western market when we release the game on Wii," with regard to bringing the series to other platforms. Since Niitsuma wouldn't say it himself, we'll go ahead and do it for him: "Buy the first one if you want to see a sequel." See, that wasn't so hard.

Mature games can sell well on Wii; just ask Resident Evil 5 (and RE: The Darkside Chronicles) producer, Masachika Kawata. Speaking to VideoGamer.com, he acknowledged that it's not easy for adult-oriented titles to break out on the system, but says it's still possible given hard work and an "X-Factor."
One of the roadblocks mature games face on Wii is perception, Kawta said. "People get this perception that on Nintendo Wii all there is are cutesy games. However, when you actually try to develop a game on Wii it costs you money, it's time consuming and it's not the easiest console to deal with." So, real games (i.e. ones that aren't cute) are hard to -- wait, did he just say "cutesy" games aren't games? Well, he has been around blood and gore an awful lot lately, but still.
"There are good [mature] games that didn't sell, obviously," Kawata admitted. "You need an X-Factor." We presume he's talking about the likes of Platinum Games' excellent MadWorld, which we have to admit probably would have sold better with the "X-Factor" that's served Capcom so well on Wii: the words "Resident Evil" in the title.

Square Enix is set to unload Dragon Quest IX onto the Japanese populace this week and it's apparently a big deal over there. A report (via Inside Games) shows the title has over two million pre-orders across various retailers in the country. It just blows our minds, because Japan has never been that fond of the Dragon Quest franchise.
So, for those of you keeping score on your Craz-o-meters, this is basically Gary Busey-level stuff we're talking about here. It's like running around in the street with no pants on, screaming that you're the person responsible for velcro technology and the Aurora Borealis.

Raku Raku Kinen Appli Wii (Easy Stop Smoking App Wii) is also slated for distribution over Nintendo’s servers next week. And, as the name describes, it’s a program that helps people quit smoking.
You start Raku Raku Kinen Appli Wii by picking a Mii. Then you choose smoking mode where you record data like how often you smoke or non smoking mode which has a seven day plan to help users kick the habit. The program is based on a book written by Mayumi Abe, a physician at Tokyo Women’s Medical University Hospital.
SilverStar, the same company behind SilverStar Chess, developed the WiiWare version and its “multiplayer” mode. Four people can record data in their own smoking journals. SilverStar suggests families can support each other by running the program together.

Nintendo has stocked the WiiWare/DSiWare/Virtual Console cupboards for a second Hanabi Festival Friday today.
This week the games are Bomberman '94 (TurboGrafx) for 700 Nintendo Points (GBP 4.90 / EUR 7 approx), and Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II (NES) for 600 NP (GBP 4.20 / EUR 6 approx).
More interesting, however, is WiiWare newcomer Karate Phants, where elephant-like fighters go one-on-one, 'trunk-slapping', 'butt-stomping' and 'barfing' their way to victory. These antics cost 800 NP (GBP 5.60 / EUR 8 approx) to partake in, and there are some pictures on the WiiWare site to look at.
Or there is WiiWare game 5 Spots Party, an adaptation of spot-the-difference that costs 500 NP (GBP 3.50 / EUR 5 approx). There's a trailer of the thrilling action on the WiiWare site.
Onto DSiWare and we find Art Style: Boxlife, a quirky game based on designing and constructing boxes using a paper grid. The DSiWare site has a video and screenshots, and the game costs 500 NP (GBP 3.50 / EUR 5 approx).

Calling, Hudson’s take on J-horror for Wii, will get a domestic release. We’ve confirmed with Hudson that Calling on target for a release in spring 2010.
The game centers around a mysterious website known as “The Black Page”. Some say it’s a gateway to something evil. Others say it’s a prank. The only thing on the page is a simple counter with the number of people that died after visiting the site.
You play as different people who visited the Black Page and are now trapped in limbo. Souls in the Calling are fighting to live, but they won’t be armed with rocket launchers. Hudson says Calling will be a traditional survival horror game. So, you have access to everyday items like a flashlight, radio, and a note pad. The remote primarily acts like a flashlight similar to Lit, but Hudson also plans to use the remote as a phone by playing sounds out of the speaker.
Each chapter of the Calling focuses on a different person and is set in the memories of the dead. You’ll visit locations like a schools, hospitals, and homes with lots of creepy dolls. As players progress through the game a “horrifying” truth to why the characters are drawn to the space between the living and the dead will be revealed.
While Calling does not have an official ESRB rating, we’ve been told this could be a “M” rated game.

Pedrocrespo has released Senet v0.05 :
Senet, a board game from predynastic and ancient Egypt, is the oldest board game whose ancient existence has been confirmed, dating to circa 3500 BC. Soon you'll be able to play it in your Wii, and then you'll understand why Tutankhamen has two senet gameboards inside his tomb.
v0.05b (10-07-09)
Passing turn function has been fixed because it wasn't working properly. Please, let me know any bug you'd find. Suggestions are welcome too.
v0.05 (09-07-09)
It includes all the rules shown above but two:
jumping multiple barriers isn't allowed.
if advancing forward is not possible, move backwards if it is.
A basic howtoplay tutorial (tut-ankh-orial) has been included too, but it's just this same page for now. --Pedrocrespo 23:09, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

July 10th, 2009, 17:25 Posted By: wraggster
Are we finally seeing Nintendo's juggernaut performance of recent years slowing down? Figures have been trickling in over the past few weeks which tend to suggest that while Nintendo's rivals aren't going to catch up with the installed base of the Wii or the DS any time soon, the company's week to week sales are slowing. In some territories, the Wii is even being outsold by the Xbox 360 - just about the first time that this has happened since the console launched, if we disregard supply constraints.
Japan is seeing an overall malaise in the home console market, despite the continuing strength of the handheld sector. Nintendo will be happy to have seen Wii Sports Resort sell 350,000 units in its first week, but less pleased with the overall performance of the Wii hardware so far this year. In the United States, the Wii's sales graph is settling off - although admittedly, the slow-down in Wii sales means that the console is now "only" selling as fast as the market-dominating PS2 was at the same point in its lifespan.
Here in the UK, meanwhile, the latest figures to be released by retailers and market data bodies alike indicate that while the Wii's software continues to sell at a huge pace, the console's hardware sales have dropped back - with the Xbox 360 selling almost twice as many units in the months from January to June this year.
Microsoft is undoubtedly thrilled by the figures, even while recognising that the mountain it would have to climb to rival the Wii's installed base is extremely daunting - and that the Wii's significantly stronger software sales are undoubtedly influencing decisions in third-party publisher boardrooms around the world.
But what is causing the drop? Vocal gamers will mutter darkly about the Wii being a fad, about the consoles gathering dust in the corner - but the software sales for the platform prove them wrong. Some might speculate that the console has hit a sales peak because it has simply saturated its target market, but that seems unlikely given that the PS2 has shifted over twice as many units as the Wii has to date.
A number of factors, I believe, are conspiring against Nintendo's success at the moment - all of which are quite possibly short-term factors, making this into a temporary respite at best for the company's competitors.
First of all, there's something that's totally out of Nintendo's control - the global economy. The past six months have seen the credit crunch which dominated 2008's news headlines finally being translated into real effects on the economic well-being of almost every nation on earth. Rising unemployment and increasing pressure on the income and expenditure of families in the developed world means that budgets for entertainment and luxury items are feeling the squeeze.
This doesn't hurt Microsoft and Sony as badly as it hurts Nintendo. We often talk about the "recession-proof" games industry, and that's still a concept that's broadly true - this industry will grow through the recession. However, some sectors of the industry will suffer while others thrive, and the casual, family gaming market which Nintendo has so successfully exploited is less likely to see gaming as a core entertainment expenditure than the hardcore, dedicated gamers who buy Xbox 360s and PS3s.
The second factor, which is very closely related, is price. Howard Stringer can talk about price discussions being short-sighted until the cows come home, but it's still a very real, important factor in consumer buying decisions. The Nintendo Wii, quite astonishingly, has seen no adjustment to its RRP since the console launched - and its trade price in Europe has actually gone up, leaving retailers with significantly less ability to create attractive bundle deals for consumers.
The Xbox 360 and PS3 have both seen price cuts in the meanwhile, often accompanied with upgrades to the specifications of the system, with the 360 receiving two major cuts to the entire range of consoles - the most recent in September of last year. You can now buy the cheapest Xbox 360 for USD 100 less than it cost at launch, and it comes with a nice big memory card and some free Xbox Live Arcade games. The Wii, meanwhile, is exactly the same as it was at launch and hasn't dropped a single penny in price.
Consumers, especially family consumers, are exceptionally price sensitive, and they know that home electronics generally get cheaper over time. The Wii's price has been sustained to an almost artificially high level by the console's high sales - there was, after all, no convincing reason for Nintendo to drop the price while it was easily selling every unit it could make at the higher price point. Now, however, there is likely to be a significant body of pent-up demand for a price drop, since consumers will be aware that one is long overdue.
There is a final factor, however, which is arguably even more important than either of these - and that's games. Despite the strong sales of Wii software in recent months, the console hasn't had a really powerful headline game to drive interest in the platform since well before Christmas. Animal Crossing is loved by its fans, but failed to break into the mainstream market in a convincing way. Wii Music, meanwhile, was groomed as a successor to Wii Sports and Wii Play, but is arguably the most disappointing first-party title for the console so far - both creatively and commercially.
The Wii is not a magic box which will sell regardless of software - the same rules which have always applied to the console business still work here. Software sells hardware. The Wii's success has been built on Nintendo's fantastic range of software, and on a slightly smaller range of third-party hits - EA Sports Active looks like being the latest in that particular line, and it'll be interesting to see how Wii sales hold up this summer in the wake of its release.
It's unlikely that we'll see a Wii price cut in the coming months, although a drop ahead of Christmas cannot be ruled out. The recession looks likely to continue to bite, and possibly even to bite deeper. If Nintendo is to regain a firm grip on the crown that's presently slipping slightly from its head, it will have to do it with innovative, attractive software that re-ignites the Wii buzz. Wii Sports Resort is its next major opportunity to do exactly that - analysts and insiders around the world will be keenly watching its performance to gauge which way the wind is blowing for the industry's top dog.

NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime says new peripheral will wow when software is shown
Outspoken Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has stated that the muted reception to Nintendo’s Vitality Sensor reveal at last month’s E3 is down to the fact that it’s not yet understood.
It’s true potential, he argues, will not be realised until the first software to sue the device is demonstrated.
“Until you have that software, it's tough to understand,” Fils-Aime told FastCompany. “If I told you that you would be standing on an oversized bathroom scale, and having fun doing it, you probably would have said ‘Reggie, I don't get it’.
“And yet here we are with the balance board arguably as the third largest development platform across the globe.
“I had very similar conversations when we first showed the Nintendo DS. How is it going to work, why a touch screen, voice activation – I don't get it. I had similar conversations about the Wii Remote. How is this going to work, how is it going to work with the games that I want to play – I don't get it.
“Now I'm hearing something similar for the Wii Vitality Sensor. And all I can tell you is, with the game developers that we have, we will bring forth an experience that you will say ‘wow, I get it’.”

If you have $20 lying around, and are a fan of Mother/Earthbound, you should definitely pick up the Mother 3 Handbook. If you're a fan of the game and don't have $20...well, lucky you.
Because you can browse and download the book for free. While the luxurious book costs $20, and a hi-res .pdf file of the thing costs $6, there's a low-res version up on Fangamer's website that can be read and, if you're short on can-reading material, downloaded then printed off.

It's a netbook. Well, a netbook inside a netbook cover. The NES was great, but never that cuddly.
This compact case is made to keep your small-scale laptop safe and secure, but as adorable as it is, we're getting slightly sick of all the love for the NES pad. What's wrong with a Master System netbook case? Or a Macbook Pro case in the shape of a Jaguar pad?

Tomorrow in Japan, Dragon Quest IX is going on sale. But there is already at least one player who has conquered the game — by cheating.
This character is a Level 99 with max HP and MP, and it has 9999999 Experience and 9999999 G, making it way more impressive than Koichi Sugiyama's Level 97 DQIX character and he composes the Dragon Quest music and has being playing the actual title for who knows how long.
If the game is this easy to cheat, then maybe it's best that it doesn't have actual online play, no?

Game & Watch, the handheld games created by Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi, are coming to Japanese DSi Ware. The series was recently released as a Club Nintendo DS cartridge dubbed Game & Watch Collection.
Each game is priced at 200 Points. Titles and Japan release dates as follows:
• Ball
July 15
• Flagman
July 15
• Vermin
July 15
• Judge
July 15
• Helmet
July 29
• Chef
July 29
• Donkey Kong JR.
August
• Mario's Cement Factory
August
• Manhole
August
All of these, save for one ~ two player title Judge, are single player only titles.
From 1980 to 1991, Nintendo made way more Game & Watch titles than these nine games, so we can probably expect just that: more. Be patient! We imagine games like Fire and Octopus are inevitable additions to this already solid line up.

Snes9x GX is a Super Nintendo™ / Super Famicom emulator for the Nintendo Wii.
Snes9x GX is a port of Snes9x 1.51 ( http://snes9x.ipherswipsite.com). It was
originally ported by SoftDev for the GameCube, and has been worked on by
various authors. Development has since moved to the Wii, and the project is
currently being maintained by Tantric and michniewski.
Snes9x GX is a "homebrew application" which means you will need a way to run
unsigned code on your Nintendo Wii. The best website for getting started with
Wii homebrew is WiiBrew ( www.wiibrew.org).
