I had a chance to chat with Marc Ecko recently about gaming. I taped the thing and asked my lovely wife to transcribe the rambly conversation for posting on Kotaku.
The conversation lasted about 30 minutes and in it we talked about Getting Up the future of Ecko Games, his love of Bob Ross and the systems he plays and played.
He struck me as pretty down to earth for a rich graffiti artist, and he definetly seemed to know his shit when it comes to gaming.
Brian Crecente
What is your sort of response to the reaction (to Getting Up: Contents Under Pressure)? It seems like it has been sorta mixed, though in general if you look at the scores it seemed to do pretty well when it came to grading. Some people kind of bashed it, but it wasn’t like people gave it an F.
Marc Ecko
Right, right. I was content I thought that, you know, I learned a lot from the process. You know the best critique is the consumer, I think that, you know, that it was definitely very interesting how polarizing it happened to be, at least online within hardcore gaming communities, that it was like either people loved it or they completely characterized it like it was shit.

For those of you that don’t know, Tommy Tallarico has been making music for video games for years now. He recently got a chance to check out the Revolution at THQ’s event, and left some impressions on the IGN boards.
“Rev Controller was interesting but it didn’t totally blow me away as some were expecting. Need to see more games for it I guess. It was running the new SpongeBob game from THQ. The coolest part was that the controller could be used it different ways for different gameplay mechanics and levels. For example, sometimes you would turn it on it’s side as use it as a steering wheel. Other times you held it upright and used it like a flight stick. And another time you could use it like a hammer or pick-axe to destroy stuff. The game itself was running off the GameCube (with the Rev Controller) so I can’t really comment on the graphics… they looked like an old GameCube game.”
Tommy says he wasn’t blown away by the controller, and then he goes on to discuss how the coolest part about the game was the Revmote functionality. I guess he is saying he enjoyed the controller, but not as much as he thought he would. Then again, perhaps he is saying that he didn’t enjoy the actual game at all, but the best part of the game was the Revmote aspect. It’s just a little hard to decipher those comments.

News from the Doom DS Site:
We now have two separate Doom projects for the DS, DoomDS and Doom3 DS.
The Doom3 DS site is completed, but not online just yet, it wont be long though so be patient.
DoomDS will be based purely on the classic Doom games, whereas our sister project Doom3 DS is obviously based in the Doom3 universe. The decision to create two separate projects was brought on by the fact that DoomDS in its evolved form was becoming very complex and perhaps a bit ambitious for our first attempt. We are using DoomDS to learn about the DS and hopefully get us ready to work on Doom3 DS.
DoomDS quickly evolved into a story driven game with features that the standard Doom engine would not have been anywhere near capable of handling. We needed a much more advanced engine that would need to be created from scratch, which is something we are currently not experienced enough to start. DoomDS will hopefully give us a much better understanding of the DS and showcase just what it is capable of.
DoomDS is based on the original Doom engine and will be somewhat similar to Doom64.
It will not be a port for the DS, but will feature alot of Doom64's visual look. For a better understanding of DoomDS, head over to the about page and get reading.
The media page has been updated and all old content removed, the new media will be uploaded as soon as we finish some texturing work. Don't expect any in-game shots for a while yet though.
I want to thank everyone who has emailed asking questions and giving suggestions, its great your all still interested in the project and keeping an eye on it. Email's from people asking questions that have been covered on the website many times before will not be answered, and requests for us to port Counter Strike will go unanswered also, we are not porting CS so quit asking.
I'm still a very busy person, and will most likely be even busier soon, if things go to plan i will announce it here on this site, but I wont get my hopes up just yet.
The team currently consists of myself and a dedicated programmer by the name of Robert Lubawski.
Rob is a machine and has been so dedicated with the project and has been doing the best he can, even though he does not own a DS. Rob has even written a dual screen FPS simulator with the same screen dimensions as the DS, just so we can test levels and art assets! The simulator is awesome and features a 3D map on the lower screen that looks just like Metroid Prime. We may show some pic's of this at a later date, but not now.
Obviously DS programming is very different, so Rob's move into DS territory is slow. His DS demo's so far are fantastic and prove that he will get to grips fast. He is limited to my own testing and emulators, so the donation button has been put back online, in the hope Rob can get a DS.
Previous donations went towards getting a DS for Michele Pace. Michele now works for a commercial game company and has little spare time to devote to DoomDS. It is a shame, but thats life and I know that I too would prioritize my real life work ahead of my DS hobbies. I'm glad to see Michele working in the games industry, he's a very talented programmer and a very nice guy too.
Good luck Michele!
I must be off now, as there are models to be textured and real life issues to deal with.
Shame on those who said we were dead, we're here till the end!

Article from Lik Sang:
As someone who will only go for a walk if there's an Ice Cream store at the end, or only do aerobics if it's on a DDR mat, the idea of giving my old grey matter a work out without feeling like I've been sent back to school has my attention. Now in English, the original version was one of the top selling DS titles in Japan, and comes from the mind of neuroscientist Professor Ryuta Kawashima. The entire game is controlled via the touch screen and stylus, and a wireless multiplayer mode allows up to 16 would-be Einsteins to compete brain-to-brain.

As you play you'll be presented with a series of puzzles based on mathematics, analysis, and memorization, as well as the sudoku puzzles which have become an extremely popular feature in U.S. newspapers. A high score system and a series of tests to determine how "old" (i.e decomposed) your brain is will keep you challenging yourself, and best of all the game is only US$ 29.90! Considering many of us probably spent about that much on brain-cell killing drinks this Easter weekend, that's a small price to pay to win them back. Don't forget either though that with the DS being completely region free, anyone can import this and while they're at it, pre-order Brain Age: Big Brain Academy due for June 5th.

Article from Lik Sang:
Coming from Nintendo's HAL Laboratories of Kirby fame, despite only having two entries over 10 years ago, the Mother series of role playing games gained a cult following. The first title came out on the NES in 1989, followed by a sequel for the SNES in '94, both of which were well loved for their sense of humor, wacky take on the Western world and quirky cartoon styled characters. The third game however was originally to be released on the N64DD, then the regular N64 after that hardware add-on was cancelled. Several delays later though and the game was scrapped completely, but three years ago now a new Mother 3 was announced for the GBA. Since that very date it's been on Famitsu's list of Japan's top 10 most wanted, and finally the 12 year long break came to an end this week.

Scoring a great 35/40 in Famitsu, Mother 3 takes you through a wacky adventure on an all new planet with two twin brothers, Lucas and Claus, plus their dog Boney and parents Hinawa and Flint. New to the series is a chapter system, but everything else from the classic battles to the bizarre humor and clean graphics are all here. There still hasn't been any word of a US release for this third title, nor for the re-release of the first two games ported to the GBA three years ago. Never the less though, running on either the GBA, GBA: SP, GB Micro, DS or DS Lite, all of which are region free, no doubt fans will dive right into the sequel they've waited so long for now it's in stock.

April 20th, 2006, 17:22 Posted By: wraggster
Reports have been mooching around the internet for the last few days that Nintendo is primed and ready to unleash a new version of its phenomenally successfully puppy sim in the form of Nintendogs: Dalmation & Friends.
Rumours stemmed from an erroneous retailer listing on the GAME website, originally citing a release date of June 16, which then changed to Q2 2006 before disappearing altogether.
In our desperate search for truth and justice, we contacted Nintendo who, in its ever-evasive manner, told us that the game's appearance was "an error on GAME's website and has now been removed. Nintendo have made no new announcements". Of course, as ever, that's not a flat-out denial, more... let's call it damage control.
However, the fog of fact has thickened as website ds-x2.com has apparently unearthed a listing on the official German USK site (the equivalent of the ESRB), which has Nintendogs: Dalmation & Friends down as already reviewed for classification.
So, a new Nintendogs title primed and ready for launch this summer? Who can say for sure? Certainly not Nintendo, it seems.

Heres a list of features etc about the New Super Mario Bros Game for DS:
Features
- Run, jump, and stomp your way through raging volcanoes, tropical islands, snowcapped peaks, and unimaginable challenges!
- Grab a Mega Mushroom and grow to incredible proportions, or smash through your foes in a blue Koopa shell!
- Challenge a friend to a wireless face-off on specially designed levels, or play up to three friends in a ton of Touch Screen minigames.
New Worlds!
New Super Mario Bros. features eight all-new worlds, each filled with extra levels, hidden paths, and secrets galore. It's possible to complete the game without visiting every world, which means you'll have to track down many alternate exists to visit every nook and cranny in the game.
New Power-Ups!
You'll find classic power-ups like the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower in the game, and there are some all-new power-ups that let Mario explore the Mushroom Kingdom like never before.
Super Mushroom
Mario's most basic power-up doubles his size and grants him the strength to smash through blocks. It also allows him to survive a single enemy hit.
Fire Mario
The Fire Flower transforms Mario into Fire Mario, allowing him to throw fireballs that bounce along the ground and can damage or destroy most foes.
Mega Mushroom
Grab a Mega Mushroom to make Mario grow to colossal size for a short time. Mega Mario can smash enemies, blocks and even pipes simply by running into them.
Mini Mushroom
Snag a Mini Mushroom to shrink Mario down to micro size. In this teeny form, Mario can go into small pipes and travel down tiny paths. Plus, he's so light that he can perform floating jumps and run on water.
Koopa Shell
When Mario picks up a special blue Koopa shell, he'll transform into Shell Mario. Shell Mario can smash through enemies and blocks like a Koopa shell, and also swim more quickly underwater.
New Moves!
New Super Mario Bros. expands Mario's arsenal of moves to include some very powerful advanced techniques. If you want to uncover every secret in the game, you'll have to master them all.
Ground Pound
Known in some circles as the utt bounce, this move allows Mario to pound the ground from above. This technique can be used to attack enemies or to break bricks.
Special Jumps
Mario can gain new heights by performing double and triple jumps similar to those found in Super Mario 64.
Wall Jump
Mario's new wall jumping ability is probably the most-used new move in the game. You'll have to use this technique to reach hidden items, and it can save your life if you accidentally fall into a pit.
New Multiplayer!
There are two multiplayer modes in New Super Mario Bros. -- Mario vs. Luigi and Minigames. In Mario vs. Luigi mode, it's brother vs. brother in a race for Stars. The goal of the game is to collect the Stars that appear throughout the stage at timed intervals. If your brother gets a Star first, don't worry. Any time you damage your bro, he'll drop one of his Stars and you can claim it for yourself. This mode is available for two players, and you only need one game card to play.
The Minigames mode offers a wide variety of simple touch-screen activities. You can challenge them solo, or use them as the basis of a minigame tournament for up to four players. The minigames may be simple, but they're surprisingly fun when you're putting your skills to the test against your friends.
Bottom Line
The great thing about New Super Mario Bros. is that it takes everything that was so spectacular about the original series and takes it to the next level. The new moves and power-ups are awesome, and it's hugely satisfying to find hidden item blocks and other secrets scattered throughout the game. The replay value is through the roof, especially with the addition of the Mario vs. Luigi multiplayer mode. Never before has New been so dramatically understated.

Gamasutra has an article on Keita Takahashi's reaction to the Revolution controller. From the article: "Takahashi commented of the Revolution, which has drawn widespread praise for its underlying concepts from other Eastern and Western designers: 'I'm not really interested in it. I don't think a controller should have that much influence on the enjoyment of games.' He continued: 'I see what [Nintendo is] trying to do, but they're putting such emphasis on the controller; 'Woah, this controller lets you do this!' and I'm thinking - are you messing with us?'
