In our continuing coverage of what to do with that old DS of yours once you upgrade to a Lite, and you will, we bring you the DS Tank. The link will take you to several mech-inspired DS mods turning your DS into something that not only plays great games, but could double as a mobile combat unit for your GI Joes. It would appear these mods were made as a part of a contest, but that doesn't mean you couldn't give it a whirl.

It was revealed by Famitsu and a thorough translation by N-Sider reader Samer that the Nintendo Game Seminar is resulting in not only educated students but also demos for the Nintendo DS. Games made by the students attending the Seminar will soon be available for download by shop goers in Japan via the DS Download Service. There were four carefully selected games, the first of which will appear on April 13.
Apr 13 - Apr 24: Nekosogi Toruneedo (Nekosogi Tornado)
Apr 27 - May 10: KuruKeshi (Rotate and Erase)
May 11 - May 24: bioum (Abrv. of 'bioform birth')
May 25 - Jun 07: Chii to Fuu no Oishii Ehon (Chii and Fuu's Delicious Picturebook)
» Nekosogi Tornado
A shooting game where you touch various objects in the town streets and fling them on enemies approaching from the sky.
» KuruKeshi
Puzzle game. Touch triangles made by linked stars and rotate them to create matching colour triangles which are then erased along with the links inside them.
» bioum
Things drawn by you become living creatures (Bio's). Bios multiply inside your DS and create an ecosystem.
» Chii and Fuu's Delicious Picturebook
A picture book you can play around with. Control two mice, collect ingredients and make a pancake.
In March, Nintendo announced it would kick off its third annual Nintendo Game Seminar, which provides incite into the game industry to hopeful men and women trying to get a foot in the door. The seminar is held in Nintendo's Tokyo office. In a ten-month time span, students receive intimate hands-on knowledge of what goes into video game development. This includes classes on design, programming and sound for a platform such as the Nintendo DS. Applications must be received by May 8. Only 40 students will be selected after an additional examination and interview.
The fact Nintendo is offering this type of user-created content on the Nintendo DS, bodes well for the future of that platform as well as Nintendo's Virtual Console service for the Nintendo Revolution. Unfortunately there's currently no word on whether or not these software demonstrations will make it outside Japan.

For all you Nintendo DS Fans who own a flashcart set up this is the game for you to try, heres the latest news about the newest version of the Real Time Strategy for the DS called A Touch of War:
Here's the latest, with excellent new graphics, courtesy of Chris Hildenbrand, a great piece of music, courtesy of Mike Keogh, and a bunch of buggy features, by me. The music is being sampled at 11khz because of memory issues, and is full of static because of it. There are a few new features including:
Improved minimap which now shows visibility.
Patrol paths for units(hold L/R and tap around the minimap).
A half decent attack formation.
Better balanced units(hopefully).
Unit proficiencies. Cav beat Archers beat Infantry beat Cav.
Menu to deselect specific unit types.
Capability to yell at units that don't fall in line.
Everything but sound and the mic work well on Dualis if you don't have a ds capable of playing this game.
Cavalry defense upgrades will be available for a small fee once https is supported on the ds .
I also added an ima-adpcm to raw conversion tool(with source) to the tools page.
Enjoy

Kazuo Yoneyama, one of the Nintendo engineers who worked on the design of DS Lite, talks about how to improve handheld consoles
In an interview with Nintendo Online, Yoneyama talked about the issues he and design partner Tomoyuki Sakiyama faced including battery life, durability, reducing size and weight and maintaining the machine's balance.
On Balance and Weight
"It's not just a matter of making sure all the components can fit in the case. We also have to think about the total weight and how the machine balances from front to back and left to right when the user is holding it."
On Size and Functionality
"We knew that we couldn't make it so small that we sacrificed functionality. Of course, we wanted to keep the display the same size, and it wouldn't have worked to change the button positions much either. To reduce the size within those constraints, we worked together with component makers, and now we're using some custom-designed parts."
On Cost Implications
"We had to be very careful about adding cost to the finished product, and were also aware of the possibility that some factories may have trouble producing our parts. Taking these issues into account, working out where it makes sense to use custom parts is something that we lost a lot of sleep over."
On Battery Life
"The battery looks the same as the DS, but it actually has 20 percent more storage capacity. The DS Lite screen is so bright that it might be a little uncomfortable to play in a dark room. To address that, and to offer some power savings, we added four selectable brightness levels to the DS display."
On Durability
"For a portable console, you can't afford to neglect durability. Rather than having our users pay several thousand yen to fix the console if they drop it, we'd rather that they be able to spend that money on buying games instead. With that in mind, we've beefed up the internal structure and layout, and we've spent a lot of time doing strength testing. Of course, when you strengthen the device, you also struggle with weight and size...that's a conflict that's been with us since the time of the Game Boy."

Charges will not be filed against six juvenile girls who placed brightly wrapped boxes at several locations in Ravenna on March 31, Portage County Prosecutor Victor V. Vigluicci said today.
The Portage County Hazardous Materials Unit and Bomb Detection Unit were called to downtown Ravenna after numerous packages wrapped in gold paper with question marks sprayed on them were found.
``The girls were imitating an art project which they found on the Internet,'' the prosecutor said. ``None of the girls had any prior contacts with the police or juvenile court and are all good students.''
The prosecutor said all the girls and parents made statements to the police when they learned their actions brought out a response by law enforcement officials.
``I do not believe that they had any bad or malicious intentions,'' he said.
The girls ``were not thinking about the consequences of their actions in this day and age,'' he said.
The prosecutor said all of the girls will write letters of apology to each of the law enforcement agencies who responded to the suspicious packages.
Boxes were found at the Immaculate Conception Church on West Main Street, the Portage County Courthouse, Deluxe Pastries, the corner of Cherry Way and Main Street, Reed Memorial Library, Ravenna High School and a residence at Sanford and Main Streets.
The hazardous material and bomb units responded to the packages, Vigluicci said, ``exactly as they are trained to do and followed all of the protocols which have been adopted since Sept. 11 involving suspicious packages in public places.''
The boxes were made to resemble ``question boxes'' from the video game Mario Bros., the prosecutor said.

DeSmuME is an emulator for the Nintendo DS created by YopYop156. DeSmuME is also known as YopYop DS is written in C++ for Microsoft Windows and can play Nintendo DS homebrew and commercial nds roms. The emulator itself is in French (with user translations to English and other languages). But even French version of DeSmuME is easy to navigate through menus as it has a similar users interface to DSemu. It supports many homebrew nds rom demoes as well as a handful of Wireless Multiboot demo nds roms. DeSmuME is also able to emulate some of the commercial nds rom titles which other DS Emulators like iDeaS and Dualis aren't capable of doing so.

This is a port of the lwIP IP stack over to the Nintendo DS.
The wireless side of things is based on the dswifi library. Thankfully Stephen Stair put in hooks to allow for the dswifi library's IP stack implementation to be replaced.
If you want to discuss or ask questions about the port venture over to the gbadev.org forums.
This is a very early release and somethings do not work. If you find any problems and/or fixes let me know.

Lynx has posted a review of the excellent homebrew RPG by LiraNuna.
Heres an excerpt:
Overall, this game is pretty awesome for a homebrew game you can download for free off the internet (this site)! There are a few bugs, and some settings that need to be adjusted to make the game more fun. As I was building up my character, I was able to pretty much kill all of the monsters without any problems at all. So, I decided to head over to Fire and take her on. If it wasn't for all the free items in the castle and around, I would have lost this fight for sure, but having 5 full potions to keep me going was more then enough to beat her. Once killed, she gives you 3000 gold. 3000 gold at the store is enough for a shopping spree. Once you leave, there is nothing left in the game (not even ANY of the bosses) that can stop you. I guess if you purchase the wrong stuff, there might be a challenge, but watching the effects on your stats, you are able to set yourself up to be safe. From there, I headed over to Ice/Water and stomped on him. I had to contact LiraNuna to find Earth, as I thought I had walked the complete map and coundn't find that boss.. At this point, walking around the map becomes a challege as you are attacked every 2 seconds, even when you are on a path. Walking from one boss to the next can take up to 5 minutes and a whole lot of A tapping just to get through the fight seens as no monster stands a chance anymore.
As for the bug, you complete the game and the save screen indicates you are only 37% done. Oops.

Game Informer reveals French publisher's project for the next-gen console, Red Steel--but is it an "incredibly violent" sword game, as rumored?
It's no secret Nintendo is going off the beaten path with its next-generation console, the Revolution. With its unconventional controller and lack of high-definition graphics, the device is not trying to imitate its competitors, the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
However, some industry watchers have wondered if the platform will be so different that porting other next-gen titles to it won't be profitable. Others fear that that third-party publishers stung by losses on poor-selling GameCube titles will hold off supporting the platform until they're satisfied its userbase is big enough to warrant developing orginal titles for.
Some of those fears can now be eased, as it has been confirmed that Ubisoft is making a Revolution game. Today, the editors of Game Informer magazine leaked their May issue's cover shot--a stark image of a pistol and a katana sword with the Revolution controller reflected in its blade. The game is identified as "Red Steel," a new title from Ubisoft's Paris studio, with a development team including former members of the Prince of Persia, Far Cry Instincts, Ghost Recon, and Splinter Cell staffs.
Unsurprisingly, the Game Informer post doesn't go into any further detail about Red Steel, preferring to goad readers into buying the forthcoming issue. However, the revelation appears to confirm--or at least add weight to--a rumor that surfaced late last week in Europe.
The rumor first appeared on the Advanced Media Network's Revolution Advanced site. Citing anonymous sources within Nintendo of Europe, the site told of a game code-named "Katana" in development at Ubisoft. "This first-person game combines shooting elements with swordplay ones, according to sources," said the site. "What's more, it's incredibly violent and adult-themed."
Are "Katana" and Red Steel the same game? As neatly as the theory fits, it cannot be officially confirmed. As of press time, Nintendo had not responded to inquiries, and Ubisoft declined to comment on the game further.

Based on Enterbrain's March sales figures for the Japanese market, Japan's Mainichi newspaper reports that Nintendo sold 380,000 DS Lites during the month and 180,000 original DS handhelds. Both versions of Nintendo's portable system have been plagued by shortages--presumably the company would have done even better if its assembly lines had kept up with the strong demand.
Sony tied up second place for the month, selling 150,000 PlayStation Portables and 140,000 PlayStation 2s--strong results for a console that hit the market six years ago.
Mainichi did not report on Xbox 360 sales for the month. It's widely accepted that the console is having trouble gaining a foothold, and some retail sources claim that less than 50,000 have sold so far this year.
Nintendo's strong performance lifted total hardware spending to 15.3 billion yen ($130 million), an increase of almost 50 percent over the total from March 2005.
The DS took a strong lead in software sales: DS games claimed six of the top 10 spots. In its fifth month on the market, Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS) showed off its longevity by capturing second place and cracking 2 million units. Square Enix's Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2) also sold more than 2 million copies in its first month on the market.
Total software sales for the month came to a whopping 38.1 billion yen ($323.7 million)--almost double the sales from March 2005. Japanese game sales have been steadily slipping for the last few years, so these strong results will be welcome news for that country's developers and publishers.

There's already a couple of Player's Choice titles on the GameCube and Gameboy Advance, and they happen to be some of the best titles on each of their respective platforms. Getting quality at a cheaper price is always a treat, so why haven't we seen Nintendo introduce this on the DS yet? Taito has already gone ahead and issued some of its games at rock-bottom prices for the DS over in Japan and now Konami is following suit with 3 games of its own. Ganbare Goemon (Mystical Ninja), Castlevania, and Survival Kids will all be released with a new price tag of 2940 yen, which comes to about $25 US, by Konami over in Japan on 6/29.

It seems that Sony won the Grand Prix (no, not the car or bike race, doofus!) and Nintendo scooped up four awards for best PR Team (good work Mr Saunders), New Games Brand (Nintendogs), TV Campaign (DS) and Marketing Team.
THQ also came up smelling of roses, picking up Most Improved Company and the much sought after Best Sales Team award. One could make the cynical observation that it might have been hard for the company to NOT improve on its performance from back in the woeful year of 2004, but then such an observation might be considered unsportsmanlike.
Sony Computer Entertainment bagged the most prestigious award of the night, the rather magnificently named Grand Prix, in recognition of its commercial success, innovation and business management – with the company having flogged a million PSP and pushed the PS2 console up to historic UK sales of eight million over the last year. Not to mention also introducing some cracking new brands to expand the current market such as Buzz!, Singstar, new Eyetoy lines and the awesome God of War.
Amongst the retail awards, SPOnG’s favourite high street hangout, GameStation just pipped GAME to Entertainment Retailer of the Year, with accolades also going to fast-growing indie ePlay, ever improving HMV, Argos and EUK.
SCI was a popular winner of the Unsung Hero for keeping a famous games publishing name British, with its acquisition last year of Eidos.
Future's Edge magazine comfortably won Magazine Team of the Year following increased sales and strong editorial. Even though SPOnG generally despairs about the state of the UK games magazine sector, with its over-reliance on covermounts and made-up exclusives, we have to give it to the Edge team – they are consistently on the ball and always manage to produce a mag that we read cover to cover. Nice one, Mr Mott and crew.
"The UK games industry is at the very cutting edge of gaming as well as being a commercial success with a worth to the UK economy of around £2 billion each year. We lead the world at marketing, retail, development and media within the sector. This year's winners should be very proud," commented Stuart Dinsey, publisher of MCV and managing director of Intent Media.

News Article from Lik Sang
One month after the official street launch date in Japan, hundreds of vain calls to suppliers and truckloads of parcels later, we can see the Lite at the end of the tunnel. Today is a great day as the very last remaining preorders for the Enamel Navy and Ice Blue colors are shipping out. Furthermore, we have more stock ready at your disposal, and snatchers are finally welcome, with both flavors listed on "ships within 24 hours" status. That's the kind of fine news that makes me want to thank all customers for their patience, Lik Sang team members for their hard work and dedication, Starbucks for their support with the coffee, my mom, my dad and so forth. "Man, I wanna thank e'rybody, man!" (credits on this final quote go to 3-6 Mafia, during the Oscars presentation last month).
Meanwhile, we are still facing a bit of a shortage on the Crystal White unit. Roughly half of the online purchases made with Lik Sang could be shipped so far, but it might still take a couple of short weeks for the last sprint. It is the most sought-after variant everywhere which makes it unfortunately natural that demand exceeds supply a bit longer than for the other two iterations. This being said, if you are holding a NDS Lite White reservation and are tired of waiting in line, we welcome your lane-switch if you would like to make one. Feel free to contact Lik Sang Customer Support with your order ID number, and the appropriate backoffice changes will be performed instantly based on your instructions. If you are reading these lines while desperately shopping around, we advise you to jump on Enamel Navy or Ice Blue right away, rather than placing a risky bet on the Crystal Cocaine version of the DS Lite.

Big News Article from Lik Sang
Ever since it was released nearly one and a half year ago for Compact Flash cards, the GBA and NDS Movie Player has generated a lot of buzz in the press, and has been delivering fun to dozens of thousands of hardcore gamers throughout the world (rated in average, out of 461 reviews from unbiased customers). The new SD card version of the Movie Player is now shipping, and offers exactly the same functionality as the CF version, in a slightly sleeker design.
The Movie Player works worldwide with any Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy Advance SP and with Gameboy Micro. All you need is a standard SD or Compact Flash card, a PC with a card reader (either built in or external via USB), and the GBA/NDS Movie Player with its included easy to use Windows software. There are also a couple of Internet web sites to download movies and trailers already converted into the proper format. One golden rule still holds true for both devices: whatever your PC can play can be converted to your mobile gaming platform!
With the massive popularity the Nintendo DS is enjoying, this gadget sure adds a whole new world of multimedia capabilities to the system. While even the largest cards are supported, the Movie Player is based on Windows DirectX, firmware is easily upgradable through your CF or SD card via a free download and it all works perfectly on any of the mentioned Nintendo handhelds sold worldwide. The coolest feature might be that the supplied Windows software converts files directly from DVD to the proper Movie Player format. Our dedicated Lik Sang forums host lots of tutorials and help here, including a Video Conversion FAQ and a thorough guide on the subject.
But that's not all: the Movie Player allows you to create your own content as well. On the forum, users can learn about how to create custom skins for example. The Movie Player even lets you listen to your favorite tunes while reading E-Books. Although easy to use, it offers vast possibilities if you want to enjoy movies, your own music and images on your Nintendo DS and NDS Lite. What could be better to complement your gaming bliss on the go than a versatile media addon like the Movie Player? Spring is here, take all your entertainment outdoors!

4 Color Rebellion got a hold of some Famitsu scans from a brand new Bandai game called Brave Story. Based on an upcoming Gonzo Digimation film (the guys that did Last Exile, if I'm not mistaken), it revolves around a young boy forced to wield a sword and embark on a perilous, family-saving journey, one fraught with ghosts, magic and terrifying sliding tile puzzles. The game happens to be an old-fashioned point-and-click (or is that tap?) adventure game, resulting in my desire to see this game translated for a US release grow quite rapidly. The game boasts quite an appealing art style and, judging by the icons in the HUD, some pretty typical adventure gameplay mechanics.
The DS is an ideal platform for the genre, and after the stellar Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (and to a far lesser degree, Trace Memory), I'm convinced that adventure gaming will continue to find new avenues to explore, a situation far removed from the repeated (and incorrect) claims that the genre is "dead". It's not dead--it has merely changed and moved beyond its traditional PC platform. I don't think anyone ever expected adventure games to eventually include wacky manga-inspired titles on a portable platform.
