Although no official specs have been forthcoming from Nintendo regarding its Revolution console, reports from various developers seem to suggest that, performance-wise, it's got about two-to-three times the oomph of the GameCube. In fact, the company's gone on record many a time to state that it has no intention of playing with the big boys in terms of processing power, shunning HD support and relying on its own controller innovations to interest the public.
Although Nintendo's keen to point out the number of third-party developers excited to be working on its next-gen console, it seems others aren't quite so thrilled by the company's low-tech future. Speaking to Gamasutra, EA LA's vice president and general manager Neil Young had a few nuggets of wisdom to share.
Advertisement:First up, "One of the challenges for the Revolution is that it's not HD. If you think about RTS games, one element is the control scheme, but the other is the distance from the TV screen when you're playing a console game versus a PC game." Referencing EA's forthcoming Battle for Middle Earth II RTS, Young elaborated, "One of the reasons [it] works so well on the 360 is the controller, but the other reason is the HD - you can see everything, frankly, as well or better as you can when you're [as close as you would be to a PC]."
It's an interesting perspective certainly, but curious given the fact that developers have been successfully creating games for non-HD console for ages now. Equally, playing devil's advocate for a moment, it would be easy to point to Nintendo's own Pikmin franchise as an example of an extremely successful RTS which didn't require HD support to be eminently playable.
Young offered his personal impressions of the console too, explaining that "the other issue is performance. The hardware performance is sort of current gen plus, versus the 10x or 20x multiple that you get on next-gen. I mean, EA is building stuff for it, but I kind of prefer the DS. It makes the most sense to me."
So, add another developer not going tits-over-hat about the Revolution to the list then. Of course, as always, let us know what you think about Young's views - and, indeed, the necessity of processing mega-oomph as the next generation of home consoles gets properly underway - in the comments below.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (April 26, 2006) - SEGA® of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced Super Monkey Ball™: Banana Blitz developed by SEGA Studios for the Nintendo Revolution system. AiAi and all his friends have rolled their way onto Nintendo's new console with new mind-blowing puzzle levels and a wealth of new and exciting Party Games specifically designed to fully exploit the innovative Nintendo Revolution controller. Other titles will have a difficult time matching the multitude of possible variations in game control as presented in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz.
The single-player puzzle levels in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz have been innovatively designed to challenge gamers' skills like never before. For the first time in the Super Monkey Ball franchise, AiAi and his friends will have the ability to jump when players flick the Nintendo Revolution controller in an upward motion. The ability to jump has given game designers another dimension in which to expand the Super Monkey Ball gameplay experience and allows gamers a whole new way to interact with the franchise; this time in true three-dimensional fashion.

Whats new?
Access point searching! (currently stylus driven, button control will come later)
Crash fixed when connection to an access point fails
a load of fixes here and there
PA_enableWifi() and its opposite are no longer required
Notes/known issues
Access point searching currently takes ip settings from the first profile.
The example App is rubbish!
There is currently no way to edit settings.
Doesn't support DHCP,TCP,WEP,WPA or firmware saving.
You still need to manually change the destip on the example in main.c in order for udp_test to receive messages.
type exit to exit the test app (the keyboard that launches after connecting).
Main.c is where your code should go (i will integrate it all and separate the example later).
you must use static ip, no WEP and have firmware settings.

The DS isn't exactly known as the place to go for arcade-style versus fighters, but with the system still topping the hardware sales charts, you just knew that was gonna change. And it has.
At the recent MMBB Online Game Festa, a King of fighters tournament and demo event held by Online service provider KDDI on 4/22 in Tokyo, KOF series producer Falcoon announced that details on a DS version of King of Fighters would be announced in the near future.
That's all the man said. For now, take this as confirmation that a DS version of the classic arcade franchise is in development, and start praying that SNK Playmore doesn't get experimental with the stylus.

I'm a member of a spanish board (elotrolado.net), and we think we discovered something.
One user tried to install flashme on his DS, and it got recognized as DS Lite. He continued the process and now he has the Lite firmware, and he have four brightness levels.
The problem is that not all DS get recognized as Lite (only v5), so we are asking for help on how to sign the lite firmware as the old one, to be able to flash all old DS with it, so we can get the four brightness levels.
I'm trying to contact loopy, but I can't find his e-mail, so If any of you can talk to him about this please do it.

A quick hop over to RPGamer will show you a plethora of screenshots on the highly-anticipated Final Fantasy III, taken from a Japanese magazine. The scans, which contain the requisite number of moogle and chocobo, showcase some of the game's tasty concept art for the classes of characters such as Red and Black Mage, along with what we can assume is information on the game, locked away behind doors that we are unable to penetrate due to our lack of ability to translate Japanese characters. Any bilingual readers want to take a crack at translating the article?
The scans also show some in-battle imagery throughout a variety of environments along with some samples of what exploration on the world map will look like. We're foaming at the mouth to see this at E3, so keep your eyes on DS Fanboy for more information as it develops.

If Final Fantasy isn't your thing, you'd best steer clear of the Square Enix E3 booth this year, an inescapable and mammoth bastion of all that is saucer-eyed, pointy-haired and saving the world from an ancient evil-y. We love it. Though the focus will undoubtedly be placed upon Final Fantasy XII, the full lineup of games indicates that our favorite portable platform is getting some love in the form of a remake and a spin-off! Erm, yay?
To be fair, Final Fantasy III does look extremely classy and holds the distinction of being the only Final Fantasy game thus far to not have been localized. If that's not enough to convince you, the 3D graphics and rumored Wi-Fi play are sure to have you intrigued. This looks to be the most promising DS title under Square Enix's umbrella this year.
Next, there's Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime. Starring one of those adorable slime things, the game has the player bouncing and stretching all over the place in a quest to stop an evil, kidnapping cartel. The press release also highlights "fierce tank battles", which sounds like it's a good thing.
Finally, there's Children of Mana, the latest offspring of Square's recently revived franchise. An RPG set in whimsical lands, the most notable feature here is the four-player cooperative questing. That's a phrase I honestly hope to write more and more often as time goes by.
Oh, and the GBA isn't completely ignored either--it's getting Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI.

Blubb is a mix of Battleships and Minesweeper. Each player has four ships with different attributes at the beginning.
The ships use, unlike battleships, only one square per ship. In each round, you can either move a ship, or shoot with a ship. To move a ship, click on it (with A), then move with the d-pad. You have to use ALL your movepoints. To shoot, click on the ship you want to shoot, then DON'T move, but click "A" again. You can only shoot on the adjacent fields.
If you miss, the NDS will tell you how much ships of the enemy are in proximity. If you know minesweeper, you'll soon know how to find your enemy.
I have not implemented a lobby yet, that means, that you have to have a date with another NDS-player.
Please tell me what you like, and more important, the things you dislike. You can contact me on MSN-messenger at dreamflat@hotmail.com, I'm allways searching for testers (bugfixing the online part is a tedious job - I can need any help I can get )

Yup, that’s right.
Version 0.3 is out at last!
A huge number of improvements and features have been added since the last version, making this finally a library you can *do something* with.
An abbreviated list of improvements goes like this: WEP, DHCP, TCP, ICMP, DNS, WFC data, but all those are just the major points, there’s a lot of work that’s been done under the surface and the internals will run much more smoothly too.

We had to share this with you. We don't know quite why, though we think you'll understand once you've watched it. As you can see, it's a video of a Star Wars lightsabre fight played with Nintendo Revolution controllers.
And, we think that like us, having lightsabre fights with Nintendo Revolution controllers was the first thing you thought about when the Revolution controller was first shown to the world at last year's Tokyo Game Show.
We received the video along with the now very much standard “ZOMG! My frind works for teh Nintendos and he leeked this vid to me!” which is fine. What isn't fine is the way the concept almost moves us to tears at the thought of a Revolution port of Sega's stunning motorway service-station stalwart: Star Wars coin-op.
Please continue to email us with the bottom of the Internet gaming pond and of course, educate us in any way you can (there is massive scope we assure you) by dropping comments in the forum below.

Nintendo's wifi gaming service looks to be doing well according to a Revogaming report. From the article: "Launched last November, the Nintendo WiFi Connection service, which offers free online multiplayer for a host of Nintendo DS games, has amassed over a million unique users in less than four months. The service's no-charge business plan and easy-to-use interface has propelled its' success, which could well surpass Microsoft's own Xbox Live service in its userbase."
The report also details the most popular games on NWC in terms of use, and it seems DS owners prefer picking apples to blasting space pirates. Figures were taken from April 10 through April 23, 2006 and represent average total users per day by percentage.
Animal Crossing: Wild World 116,901 (44.2% of total)
Metroid Prime: Hunters 70,954 (26.8% of total)
Mario Kart DS 59,544 (22.5% of total)
Tetris DS 15,842 (6% of total)
Tony Hawk: American Sk8land 1,159 (0.4% of total)

A video of some of the new power-ups featured in New Super Mario Bros. has been posted on the official website — additional videos will be posted on 5/1, 5/8, and 5/15. The current video features the exciting new Mega Mushroom power-up (pictured) and its counterpart, the Mini Mushroom. The new blue Koopa shell also makes an appearance, transforming the plumber into Shell Mario, as seen in the underwater scene. And of course, what preview would be complete with a Fire Mario sighting?
The video also gives us a look at some of Mario's moves, including the ground pound (or 'butt bounce'), double jump, and wall jumping ability. We may have picked up on Infendo's skepticism a few weeks ago, but this new footage had us on that nostalagia tip, hard. You know, all warm and gooey inside. New Super Mario Bros. is set to drop on May 15.

From now until 9 a.m. PDT on April 28, Nintendo and AOL are accepting entries in their Be the First to Play sweepstakes, three winners of which will be flown to Los Angeles for Nintendo's May 9 pre-E3 media briefing.
As lucky as that sounds, one of the three will be given the opportunity of a Nintendo fan's lifetime. All three will receive travel and lodging in LA for three days and two nights, a DS Lite, a copy of Super Mario Bros. DS, and a Nintendo T-shirt, but only the grand-prize winner will be the first consumer to play the Revolution.
So how much is it worth to play Nintendo's console early? About $1,000, according to Nintendo. In the official contest rules and regulations, Nintendo sets the approximate retail value of the grand prize at $4,000, with the second prizes running for $3,000 each.

Pokemon is coming to mobile phone handsets in Japan at last, in the form of an email application with virtual pet functionality which is being created as a collaboration between Nintendo and publisher Square Enix.
The new product, which will feature the signature Pokemon characters - including Pikachu - heavily, is the latest cautious move by Nintendo towards the thriving mobile phone content market in Japan.
Despite, or perhaps because of, the company's dominance of handheld gaming platforms, Nintendo has been slow to engage with this sector, with the only current venture being a recently launched ringtone and animated wallpaper service called Nintendo Mobile.
This new collaboration with Square Enix will allow Nintendo to leverage its publishing partner's significant experience in the mobile market - which includes publishing the hugely acclaimed Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis mobile game, which utilised the camera in the phone as part of the play experience and is one of the most successful mobile games in the region to date.
News of the collaboration was revealed by Japanese consumer magazine Famitsu, and no word has yet been forthcoming regarding any plans to bring the application to territories outside Japan.

New Commercial DS Game:

Simple DS Series Vol. 7: The Zokusha Kids is a spinoff of the PS2's "The Zokusha King." A racing game like the PS2 original, you set up your car using a variety of parts, changing the vehicle's physical appearance in the process, then head out for a race. Strike a can on the race track, and you're awarded with one of six items which can be used to attack your opponents or change your car's properties. This title uses the bottom screen to display time, the current ordering and a map, with the action taking place on the top screen.

News from Lik Sang
Tomy, who brought us the smashing Naruto: Gekitou Ninja Taisen series for GameCube, plus the Naruto RPG and Naruto: Saikyo Ninja Daikesshu series for the GBA and NDS, have come out with something special this week. Their Naruto: Saikyo Ninja Daikesshu titles have typically been side scrolling action affairs, but this 4th installment breaks the mould and comes out a full on four player melee fighting fest instead! In stock many days before the Japanese release, all pre-orders have been cleared and new purchases are welcome anytime. Don't forget either, because the DS is region free, Naruto will play no matter where you picked up your handheld.

Beyond beating each other down Jump Superstars style, another option is single and multiplayer Mission Mode. Ranking your performance, there's a wide variety of challenges such as three on one fights, thrashing a boss, protecting people or areas like the supports of a bridge, taking out a number of animals, capturing flags and many more; not to forget those tough ones that really weed out the boys from the men like grabbing 10 bowls of Ramen!
All this action plays out up on the top screen, taking place in huge 2D environments across roof tops, jungles, cliffs, trains, snowy mountain tops and more. Meanwhile the touch screen is used to display each of the four character's stats, a useful radar and selection of special moves on four panels. After tapping one you use the stylus to draw Jutsu seals which let rip the giant super moves and massive damage. Certain moves like Sasuke’s Fire Jutsu on the other hand, require different approaches like blowing into the microphone. The accompanying pre-rendered cut scenes then play out down there while the fights continue to roll on up top.

In a blow to Nintendo's hopes that their Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day title for the Nintendo DS would sell bajillions of copies to aging boomers who want to halt the rate at which their brains slip into senility, the Wall Street Journal's Science Journal debunks the idea that brain training of any sort can help slow the rate of mental decline.
The Journal quotes a recent study by University of Virginia’s Timothy Salthouse that found "little scientific evidence that engagement in mentally stimulating activities alters the rate of mental aging" calling the belief "more of an optimistic hope than an empirical reality."
Furthermore, "Even in the most mentally engaged elderly -- chess experts, professors, doctors -- mental function declines as steeply as in people to whom mental exercise means choosing which TV show to watch," Sharon Begley -- the author of the piece -- writes.
The news isn't all bad, though. Even though rigorous training fails to halt the rate of decline of our wetware, trained brains do perform trained tasks better, according to the Journal. If, for instance, you were to regularly practice math, you'd be faster with numbers than those who haven't been practicing.
Later this week, Begley will examine which types of training provides boosts brains best. We'll be sure to follow up then.

Some may think that "children are our future." However, when it comes to kids, THQ is thinking about now. The game publisher holds some of the most coveted family-friendly licenses in the business with its arrangement with Nickelodeon, a brand of Viacom. In 2004, THQ cemented its position as a children's game powerhouse by extending its Nickelodeon deal through 2010 and inking a partnership with film studio Pixar.
Today, THQ announced its 2006 Nickelodeon lineup aimed at the prepubescent crowd. The kids cable network is responsible for some of the most popular children's shows, including SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, and Danny Phantom. In this upcoming year, young gamers can expect to see more familiar Nick names, as well as a game based on an upcoming Nick movie.
The biggest announcement from today's news is a new next-generation game featuring kids' favorite underwater invertebrate, SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob, Patrick, and pals are headed to the Revolution in SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab. The game, which features nine levels spread across Bob's home turf of Bikini Bottom, will also be released for the GameCube, Game Boy Advance, DS, and the PC this fall.
Avatar: The Last Airbender brings one of Nick's newest shows to game consoles for the first time. The show's martial-arts action will kick onto the Revolution, GameCube, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance, DS, PSP, and the PC this fall.
Danny Phantom makes his first appearance on the DS in Danny Phantom Urban Jungle, scheduled to hit stores this fall. In the game, players control the spectral superhero as he takes on his archenemy and learns the new freeze power. Urban Jungle will also be released on the Game Boy Advance.
Live-action teen show Unfabulous is also headed to the Game Boy Advance. As teenaged girl Addie Singer, gamers will have to face one of life's ultimate challenges--the social ladder of Rocky Road Middle School. The game will be based on the characters and events from the show.
Fans of Nickelodeon in general will also get a chance to play as their favorite characters without having to lug around 10 different games. Nicktoons (working title) features characters from several of the network's shows, including SpongeBob, Jimmy Neutron, and The Fairly OddParents. By combining the strengths and weapons, the characters will take on an enemy aiming to destroy a Nicktoons island. Nicktoons is in the works for the PS2, GameCube, GBA, and the DS.
Nickelodeon's upcoming film, Barnyard, will be getting the game-to-film treatment. The film, written and directed by Steve Oedekerk (Kung Pow: Way of the Fist, Thumbtanic), is scheduled to be released on July 28 in North America, and gamers can expect Barnyard to hit the PlayStation 2, GameCube, and the Game Boy Advance a few days earlier. A PC version will be released later this fall.
