We have seen the general response from English speakers on Nintendo's console renaming -- from Revolution to Wii -- but how about a foreign market where Wii does not evoke phallic imagery? A friend of ours fluent in Japanese took a gander at the Japanese news site News 19 to gauge the response in the Land of the Rising Sun. Here are the highlights of what he found:
post 39: "Wee is an english baby word for pee or penis according to foreign forums. This might be bad. May be this is why foreigner's response is pretty bad."
posts 47-49: "I think Revolution was a better name."
posts 60, 62: "It is better naming than Revolution."
post 116: "It looks good if you write it, but awkward if you say it."
post 122: "'Can I have Wii.' It's little bit embarrassing to say it."
The other posts are puns "with a drunk noise that Japanese people make (some people say something similar to 'wii' when they are drunk in Japan), associations with the wrestler Stan Hansen (he does not know why, and neither do we), and the "rest are mostly making fun of the fact that it is pronounced the same as 'wee,' or, in Japan when you say yes, you sometimes say 'ui-,' which is similar to 'wii.'" It's fascinating to have some insight as to how other languages are taking to the new name.

The latest issue of Famitsu is the last one before E3 kicks off on the 10th (Famitsu is taking next week off for Golden Week). As it does every year, Famitsu has provided a look forward at the show, with a couple of surveys and a few revealing news bits on what we can expect in a couple of weeks.
Famitsu polled gamers and software makers about their interest at E3. Both parties were most interested in Nintendo's new hardware. 47.4% of software makers and 45.3% of gamers expressed interest in Revolution. This topped PlayStation 3, which got 36.8% of the developer vote and 44.8% of the gamer vote. The remaining 15.8% of developers didn't respond to the question. For users, 4.4% selected Xbox 360 with 5.5% selecting "other hardware." The magazine did not reveal the number of participants in the survey.
Developers were also asked to reveal how many secret titles they have planned to unveil at the show. Of the 19 companies polled, 12 revealed that they have undisclosed titles to show, with two listing no secrets for the show and 5 giving no response. Of those with secret titles to show, 5 companies stated that at least one of the secret titles is for Revolution. PS3 and PSP were each listed by 2 companies, with GameCube, PS2 and DS getting one company each. Five companies had secret titles whose hardware they would not confirm with the magazine.
The magazine also provided a list of games set to go on display at the show from some of Japan's biggest publishers. Keep in mind that this list is not complete and only reflects the information the various companies were willing to give Famitsu at the time of its publish.
Of the companies listed in Famitsu, Bandai Namco games had the most titles, with PS2 getting the brunt of the playable offerings. For Xbox 360, Culdecept Saga will appear in video-only, with Gundam seeing its playable debut. PS3 will have Gundam, Tekken 6 and Ridge Racer 7 all shown in video form.
Ubisoft's list of titles includes some big next generation offerings. PS3 will see Assassin and Game V. Xbox 360 will see BIA Hell's Highway, Rainbow Six Vegas and Splinter Cell Double Agent. PS2 and Xbox 360 will see Open Season. Dark Messiah and Red Steel are listed as hardware TBA. Playable/video status of the Ubisoft titles is not listed in the magazine.
Tecmo has revealed to Famitsu just three titles set for the show. Korobot Adventure will appear for the PS2, with Xbox 360 getting Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 and Revolution getting Pangya Revolution. All three titles will be shown in video form.
The magazine lists two Xbox 360 offerings from THQ. Moto GP will appear in playable form, with Saints Row being shown via video.
Koei's next generation efforts are all going the video route. Fatal Inertia and Blade Storm will be shown for the PS2, with Samurai Warriors 2 getting its Xbox 360 debut. The magazine lists Samurai Warriors 2 as playable, but we wouldn't be surprised if this is for the PS2 version.
Capcom has a large lineup of playable titles. Okami, God Hand and Street Fighter Zero Fighters Generation will be available for the PS2. Xbox 360 will have Lost Planet and Dead Rising in playable states. The magazine doesn't list any Capcom PS3 titles.
Square Enix's lineup is current generation only. The company will display Dirge of Cerberus Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy XII and Valkyrie Profile 2 Silmeria in playable form for the PS2. Seiken Densetsu 4 for the PS2 will be shown in video form.
IGN expects to see quite a bit more than what was listed in the Famitsu article, so be sure and check back prior to the 10th as E3 2006 kicks off.

Yesterday Nintendo released the official name for their next console. Formerly the Revolution, and now simply called Wii, reaction has been strong among gaming fans. A Brian Crescente article in the Rocky Mountain News looks at why Wii is bad, from a marketing perspective. Chris Kohler, over at Game|Life, looks at why Wii is good because of its iconoclastic nature. And, always happy to help with the irreverent, Games.net examines why Wii is weird. From that article: "We don't think Nintendo Wii is a truly terrible console name, but it's an uncharacteristically risky choice, even for Nintendo. We admire its simplicity and its playfulness (the two i's represent multiplayer action, you see). But on the flip side, parents will have a hard time pronouncing it ("Nintendo...why?") and hardcore gamers will slam it ...

The universal derision surrounding Nintendo's announcement that the next-gen console formerly known as Revolution will, in fact, be known as Wii, has provoked spirited but not particularly credible justification from Nintendo of America PR Manager Matt Atwood, in response to a grilling by Game Informer.
In America, as well as the UK, the name's connotations of passing urine have provoked a mass outbreak of schoolboy s******ing, allied to rueful head-shaking and cringing. When asked whether it worries him that Nintendo's great white hope is now named after kids' slang for going to the bathroom, Atwood answered: "No. Any time you announce a new name you're going to get a lot of questions. If you look at what TiVo did or Virgin Airline for instance, those names have become household names and it had nothing to do with that at all. We wanted a name that represented the fact that this system was really for everyone to play. And Wii, the word, is W-i-i, and the two Is represent both people and the controllers."
That specious argument - along with the huge list of even more specious justifications for the name that Nintendo came up with when it made the announcement -- smacks of desperation. Neither TiVo nor Virgin - nor indeed the other examples of dodgy names Atwood came up with, such as Prius, Caterpillar, Naked Juice (which is never likely to reach the UK) and Napster - possess the same bodily function overtones as Wii, nor invite the same questioning about whether Nintendo is taking the piss (even though April 1 has long since passed).
When asked whether he liked the name Wii, Atwood flannelled manfully: "First time I heard it, I sat down and thought about it for a bit, and "Do I like it, Do I not?" and I thought, 'Hmm, it seems a little bit different. I don't understand it'.
"And then I did the same thing you guys did and watched the video, and the more I understood about the system, the more it's made a lot of sense to me. Yeah, initially I went, "Wow, this is different." And then once I started getting more hands-on with the system, and once I started to understand the concept behind the system and how the name ties in, I actually really like it. I think people will talk about it. You're definitely seeing it on the net, and people will continue to talk about it." Which roughly translates as: All publicity is good publicity, but surely Nintendo can't be that desperate to have everyone talking about it?
According to Atwood, the cure for our misgivings about this most unfortunate of handles will be hands-on experience of the console: "Once you touch the Revolution, this will make more sense. Once you play more games, and once the system is out, and more and more people play it, and you're realizing these different experiences, it'll make more sense. Again, it may sound a little bit of a line, but I think it fits well. This is not about you or me, it's about Wii." Pur-lease.
One can imagine the horror that would have gripped Nintendo of Europe when the name was announced, and Atwood inadvertently suggests, as one would have imagined, that Nintendo's European wing - always seen in the past as a second-class outpost of the company - had no hand in the naming which, unsurprisingly, was hashed up by a committee: "It was actually several people internally. But beyond that, we aren't disclosing specifics on how the name came about.n But it was several people at NOA and NCL."
The saddest aspect of Atwood's interview is that Nintendo did discuss sticking with the console's perfectly excellent code-name: "There were thoughts of sticking with Revolution, then there were thoughts of a completely different name, but once everything came together this was the name decided. I think they wanted a name that was very unique. Because this system is not about an upgrade of an old system."
Fair enough, but Nintendo really needn't have opted for a name that will forever associate what it believes will be its most ground-breaking piece of hardware ever with children visiting the toilet.

The guys over at DS-Play, one of several large DS community sites, have rolled out a PC version of Pictochat. Situated comfortably within your browser window, the program emulates the functions of the built-in DS program, namely sending text messages to others and displaying poorly drawn genitals. In addition, it also lets you save your supposed masterpieces for later viewing. It's not going to make you delete your current IM programs, but it does provide a neat little diversion, especially if your communication and artistic skills aren't hampered by the use of an imprecise mouse and fairly limited tools (you'll get 16 colors and you'll like it).
A word of warning, however: The very first crude drawing I was presented with involved uncomfortable bodily functions. These people are everywhere.

Davr has once again updated his Draw app for the Nintendo DS, heres whats new:
Draw version R10 is released! The new features are:
Saving to SRAM, flash-cart users can now save!
Loading saved .png from CF/SD adaptors
Loading saved image from SRAM (again, for flash cart users)
Now, I don't have a working flash cart, so I would be grateful if you could test out the loading and saving to SRAM, and post the results into the comments here. The main limitation is that I can't save larger than 64KB images to SRAM. This will be solved in the future (most likely by lowering the image quality, there are several optimizations I can make.)

Fabre posted this news:
This is a simple PA Lib example of a tank. Once you have it running on your DS, you can drag the white circle on the bottom screen to turn the turret, and use the D-Pad to control the tank. The source code is included, and you are free to do whatever you want with it. I have included .nds, .ds.gba and .sc.nds versions, although I have only tested it on a GBAMP v2 w/ FlashMe. And yes, I drew the tank sprites myself - not bad for a programmer, right?

In the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Tecmo Producer Keisuke Kikuchi disclosed a few details about Skatto Golf Pangya Revolution (working title), the company's first game for Nintendo's next-generation console, code-named Revolution.
According to Kikuchi - who is known for his work on the Fatal Frame series - Tecmo is approaching the Revolution title as an original outing rather than a direct port of the PC version. The team's goals with Skatto Golf Pangya Revolution is to create enjoyment from moving the controller to play the game, provide a better defined world over the PC version, and allow players freedom in time dedication to extend replayability.
Tecmo is also planning new content for the Revolution version in the form of multiple characters with individual storylines and costumes, among other things.
Regarding control schemes, players will enjoy moving their bodies to play the game, according to Kikuchi. In addition to utilizing the motion-sensing capabilities of the Revolution controller, a fully button-based input system will be employed for precise controls.
Kikuchi also revealed to Famitsu that although an extensive online component helped define the PC title's MMO (massively-multiplayer online) status, the Revolution version will be mostly an offline affair, with downloable content being considered. Though the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection may be employed in some capacity for the game, the development team seems focused on scaling back the online aspect to form a balance with the single player.
Skatto Golf Pangya Revolution is currently a Japan-only title set to release on Revolution later this year. Tecmo has not stated if the game would be shown at E3 in May.

EA's hugely successful American Football series, Madden, will be making its way to Nintendo Revolution and will make full use of the console's new control system.
Going under the working title of Madden Revolution the game will have the same attention to detail and simulator feel as other next-gen versions of the game, but the way you'll interact with the action will be completely unique.
From the line of scrimmage to executing a snap (when the ball is hiked back to the quarter back), the motion of receiving the ball will have to be mimicked with the controller in hand. Then, to make a pass, you'll have to make the motion of the desired pass with the controller.
The developers at EA's Burnaby studio have been working hard at getting Revolution to understand the various ways in which a football can be thrown, so you'll be able to deliver short, sharp passes as well as lofted Hail Marys.
It's not just throwing that's dictated by the player's movement. For instance, to kick accurately you must swing the controller as though it were the kicker's leg; a straight, speedy motion will ensure a powerful and precise kick.
When running with the ball, the controller can be used to evade tackles by tilting it left or right, while a thrust forward will hand-off opponents.
It all sounds most intriguing, and it's encouraging to see that EA will be bringing its big-hitting franchises to Revolution along with the necessary tweaks to get the most out of the console's capabilities.
Madden Revolution will be playable at next month's E3 so we'll be able to see for ourselves how Revolution has affected EA's flagship sports title.
