Just in case you live in some strange, contrary world, eagerly awaiting June 27 so you can rush out and pick up the original, futuristic breeze block-style DS instead of the sexy new Lite, you might be interested to hear that reports for Japan are suggesting Nintendo's put the kabosh on production of the original handheld.
Website Gamefront.de is reporting that Japanese retailers have not recieved shipments of the original grey machine for over a month now, while DS Lite output remains consistent. Many are taking this to mean that Nintendo's finally ditched the DS's ugly sister in favour of the newer model - which shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, although the speed it's happened following the Lite's release may raise a few eyebrows.
Nintendo has yet to confirm reports, although we suspect it'll only be a matter of time before the company phases the original handheld out across the globe.

As you might expect, there was much commotion in the CVG war-room when we first saw Solid Snake sneaking in the new Smash Bros. But taking a look at these tasty new screenshots, it's hard to remember a time when we couldn't kick Mario's arse with the Metal Gear Solid super-soldier.
Along with these new screenshots, a fresh blog entry by series director Masahiro Sakurai was released today, on his own official Smash Bros. website. "It looks like people are split pretty evenly over which of the four new characters is their favourite," Sakurai writes. "I bet you were all surprised by the appearance of Snake!"
Advertisement:He continues. "Finally we've gotten over the wall that separates different game makers, but of course this was due to the cooperation of many different people. Now, Smash Snake is fighting furiously and sneaking before my very eyes."
Smash Bros. Brawl is due for release in 2007.

JimmyL has updated his great RTS game for the Nintendo DS, heres whats new
2 updates actually
Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of a hat.
Another sync bug squashed...
Not much new in this build, just a few bug fixes for people playing online. I made the wifi menus more robust, so you should be able to back out of any operation you started without the need to reboot. I also fixed a couple of bugs that caused online games to sometimes lose sync. Hopefully I caught them all this time.
The only non-wifi changes have been a couple of optimizations to help improve the frame rate when you have a lot of units.

Sgstair posted this news:
There have been some pretty significant updates to the dswifi lib in CVS - TCP is now a lot more stable, and some other things have been addressed (As always, see the Checklist [wiki.akkit.org])
Of course please let me know if you do manage to find any bugs or it doesn’t work how you think it should.
I’m also still debating whether to spend some time converting the junky videos I took of the Wii action and post them… to give you an idea of what we’re talking about, the footage is 640×480, 15fps without sound - the footage is a bit shaky but some is better than others, I’ll clean it up to the best of my ability if I convert it.
More importantly I’d like to know if you people (whoever reads this blog, if anyone :P) would like to see this footage, given that there are of course lots of nicer sources out there - there is at least one video I’d like to show everyone though, so I will at least convert and post the one.

News from PataterSoft:
Hay kiddies! Guess what? I made you this special little app that helps you break that nasty habit of yours. Do you want to convert some data out of a .c, .cpp, or .h file into REAL, ACTUAL binary data? Does everybody on #dsdev yell at you for using .h files for your graphics instead of .bin files, but your graphic converter only converts graphics into .h? Enter hConvert. The hero of smashing text based binary data. It'll parse through a (currently limited) hex based, comma delimited, "{" starting, "};", terminated dump of binary data and spit out a little .bin file. Super useful! You know you want it oh so badly.
Using bin files, devkitARM, and the default makefile for devkitARM (which uses bin2o) is the recommened way of linking binary data into your program. However, the most portable way of including binary data in your program is through an isolated translation unit, ie a .c file a textual representation of the data to be linked. Many kiddies would make the mistake of then including this file, "#include "my_gfx_thingy.c", which is bad bad bad. NEVER DO IT. The proper way to make it a truly isolated and portable translation unit is to make a .h file that will refer to it using the extern keyword. That would look like this in the .h file (not the .c) which we include from where ever we want to referece the graphic, continuing our previous example, "extern const uint16 my_gfx_thingy[];".
hConvert would be useful, if you are concerned about portability and would never use devkitARM's bin2o makefile rule that wouldn't exist in another toolchain, in converting a .c isolated translation unit into binary data for use with a filesystem, such as GBA_NDS_FAT lib from chishm or Nintendo's filesystem (using their tools).
hConvert is a an application for x86 Linux and Macintosh OS X (and Windows at a later date, probably tomorrow).

Here is my palette conversion tool for the PC. It converts DS Palettes to an unsigned short array. I hope to be able to convert back to DS palettes and other secret functionality. This tool is oh so handy for those of you considering porting your DS game to the PC but don’t want to use other GFX formats such as PNG or have lost the originals.

Wintermute posted this news:
This is a major update to the ARM toolchain.
devkitARM release 19 may be downloaded from here.
This release updates binutils to 2.16.93, gcc to 4.1.1 and improves the newlib pseudo device API added in previous releases.
The toolchain is now arm-eabi instead of arm-elf since this allows us to dispense with the interworking libraries and build arm946e-s code without object marking mismatch problems. Unfortunately this means that code built with prior releases are no longer compatible and must be rebuilt with the new toolchain.
have all been built with the new toolchain and are not compatible with prior toolchains.
The windows updater will automatically install these updates.

StarFox Command, the newly renamed DS adventure featuring Arwings, anthropomorphic pilots and gratutious amounts of spinning is now set to release on 28 August 2006. Apart from maneuvering through 3D landscapes and blasting enemy ships to smithereens, you'll be able to draw routes on the bottom screen for your teammates to follow as they assist you in taking over enemy bases. We assume that's where the "Command" part comes in.
As for Nintendo Wi-Fi, up to 4 players can duke it out online, with a more impressive number of 8 being relegated to local wireless play. As Falco would say, "How swell."

At a recent sales and product explanation meeting for retailers, Nintendo revealed that in its first four days of availability since May 25, New Super Mario Bros. sold through 900,000 copies in Japan. This makes it by far the best debuting DS game ever, and one of the highest debut for a game in Japan in the last few years, topped only by recent hits such as Final Fantasy XII, Dragon Quest VIII and Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen.
Nintendo also mentioned that 950,000 DS Lite systems were sold in April (not including the older model, which also sold well). That brings total DS sales to 8.4 Million in Japan alone. Another notable success was Tetris DS, which shipped through 800,000 units in 4 weeks.

Some new information on the upcoming stylus-drive Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass has emerged via the latest issue of Nintendo Power. N-Sider has taken the time to condense the information for those lacking the fortitude to actually go out into the world and purchase the magazine, or even lack the strength to a wield a pen and fill out the requisite information to subscribe.
Out of the repeated information, a few new items are able to be extracted. The game supposedly features one primary dungeon that Link will have to navigate, yet will become impassable to him at times, which will require him to venture into other minor dungeons to acquire an item of some sort that will allow him to progress. What's also interesting is that the dungeons will also be home to what are being dubbed "chasers." These enemies are invincible, mercilessly pursuing Link upon the mere sight of him.

If you grew up with an 8-bit Nintendo console, then your childhood was tainted by a well-oiled propaganda machine promoting vices ranging from sodomy to the metric system. The Japanese, who were still angry about losing World War II to Godzilla, deployed Mario Bros. in 1983 as a weapon through which to bring about the downfall of the Western world. Originally, Mario Bros. was not supposed to have any abbreviations in its title since shortened words displease the emperor, but Nintendo could only translate part of the word “brothers” due to budget constraints and a desire to keep their propaganda hero away from the touchy subject of race relations. For the same reasons, the original 12-brother cast was scaled back to just two. The extra plumbers would have expanded the hero lineup well beyond the standard red and green. Each of the forgotten characters could be described by one of the following words: yellow, blue, pink, invisible, wheelchair-bound, morbidly obese, heavily irradiated, perpetually drunk, attracted to animals, and serving twenty-five to life. Here is a brief examination of a few of the characters and enemies that did make the cut for Mario Bros. and the dangers they pose to modern society.
Everyone over the age of sixteen knows that Goomba was the teen heartthrob of the 1980s. This is somewhat unnerving since Goombas are walking mushrooms with overgrown eyebrows. Nintendo basically taught a generation of children to procreate with fungus. Contrary to common belief, Goombas are not dumb. Most graduate from community colleges, and a few have even managed to earn master’s degrees in fields ranging from growing on rotten logs to slowly walking back and forth. In fact, the observant will notice that the word Goomba ends with the acronym “MBA.” Unfortunately, Goombas are more or less extinct thanks to Mario’s senseless multi-game murder spree.
Koopa Troopa has always been a highly suspicious enemy because he just doesn’t seem that dangerous. I can say from personal experience that it is not very hard to jump on a turtle. Furthermore, I was disappointed to find that instead of shooting off in the distance as a deadly projectile, the shell pretty much stays where it is after making a few crunching noises. Koopa Troopa is actually an attempt by Nintendo to train the American soldiers of tomorrow to jump on reptiles, thereby making them vulnerable to the famous Japanese turtle-shaped landmine. Nintendo is also promoting its leftist agenda with this enemy since Koopa Troopa is a slang term for the masculine partner in a lesbian relationship.
Through Shy Guy, Nintendo taught a generation of youngsters that the best way to treat social anxiety disorder is by jumping on it with an overweight Italian plumber. Maybe Shy Guy would fit in and make some friends if he stopped dressing like a serial killer. In fact, Shy Guy’s original name was “Midget Jason.” Unless he was formerly an NHL superstar, Shy Guy should have realized that wearing a hockey mask is not the best way to cover embarrassing acne. In the Mario Bros. series, Shy Guy’s main weapons include listening to emo and writing angst-filled entries on LiveJournal.
Any self-respecting American should be wary of Mario for two reasons. First, Mario is supposed to be an Italian plumber, yet Italy doesn’t have indoor plumbing. Second, Mario is allegedly an Italian created by a Japanese game company, yet Italy and Japan don’t even exist on the same planet. If Mario came walking down my street, I’d lock my door based on those two factors alone, but there are many more questions that have never been answered.
For instance, if Mario is supposed to be a plumber, why is he wearing overalls, the one lower body covering that makes plumber’s crack absolutely impossible? Furthermore, if he can jump fifteen feet in the air, why doesn’t he play basketball? One can only conclude that Mario had the worst high school guidance counselor on the planet – if he graduated from high school at all. There is no reason to believe that Mario has any formal education since he never demonstrates the ability to read write. In other words, Nintendo sent American children a hero who gave up a lucrative NBA deal to pursue a career as an illiterate plumber in a country without running water. The Japanese haven’t been this direct with an attempt to destroy America since they sank the Titanic.
These are just a few of the videogames that are bringing about the ruin of Western civilization. Check back tomorrow to learn the dangers posed by pinball and Chinese checkers.

No doubt attempting to organize the masses of people who constantly barge into stores at random intervals and demand games that aren't due for release in months, Nintendo has sent out a handy "release list" thing. If we understand this correctly, it's supposed to tell you on which day some of their major DS games will be set loose upon the public. That's Nintendo for you--always innovating.
June 5: Big Brain Academy™
June 5: Magnetica™
June 11: Nintendo DS™ Lite (although that depends on where you're shopping)
June 26: Sudoku Gridmaster
Aug. 28: Star Fox DS
Sept. 18: Pokémon® Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team
Sept. 25: Mario vs. Donkey Kong™ 2: March of the Minis
Oct. 9: Clubhouse Games™
Oct. 30: Children of Mana
Sadly, it looks like the new Kirby game and Yoshi's Island 2 will only be released during or after the cheerfully explosive holiday season. Don't let that stop you from demanding it from the store clerk next week.

Pfhreak posted this:
Now, this is hardly a finished game, but since the deadline is (apparently) today, I'm gonna toss this to the judges for consumption. Here goes:
In Daemon, the player assumes the role of highly advanced space superiority fighter in a top down scrolling shooter (or SHMUP, should you prefer.) The catch is that the player is not a human pilot fighting to save the Earth, but rather a complex computer algorithm capable of changing itself and the ship it flies to suit the needs of the battlefield. The ship, initially quite weak, can 'slot' three types of upgrades: chassis/powerplant upgrades, Navigation/Computation upgrades, and Weapons/Munitions upgrades. You have a surprising amount of diversity to choose from (only six in this incomplete version, over 30 in the complete version) many with prerequisites. You may, for example, require an additional power plant before you can slot your Twin Shot Array. This pick and choose style of upgrading gives a large amount of flexibility and customization to the player, and is part of the 'evolution' tie in.

Snezziboy the SNES Emulator for the Gameboy Advance (nintendo ds too) has been updated, heres whats new:
Fixed the TSC instruction so that the C register is updated regardless if M bit.
Fixed the TDC instruction so that the C register is updated regardless if M bit.
Fixed the RTL/RTS/RTI instructions so that it can properly return from the subroutine that had been JSL/JSR-ed from $xx:8000
Made fixes in the memory map for games with no SRAM size, so that ROMs that try to detect for absence of SRAM (protection against copying) will get what they expect. (Bust-a-move makes it to the main screen, but the game itself is unplayable due to the use of HDMA)
Made fixes to the $DB (modified STP instruction) to jump correctly. (Tetris Attack now works)
Fixed the PEI instruction; it was previously pushing $0000 always onto the stack
Fixed BIT instruction to update the N/Z flags correctly when BIT-ing in a non-immediate mode.
(Super Mario World fades correctly after each stage) (Megaman7's collision detection is now accurate)
Fixed register $4016 for joypad auto-reading and latching (Donkey Kong Country now recognizes joypad input)
Reworked SRAM reading and writing routines
(Donkey Kong Country seems playable; some screens are remain garbled)
Fixed bug with VRAM writing (Darius Twin's in-game screen no longer garbles-up randomly)

The Guardian Gamesblog discusses the newly announced Touch Generation of games for Nintendo's consoles. From the article: "This is, of course, a pointless piece of product re-positioning, symptomatic of modern business's obsession with branding above and beyond the call of sense. More importantly though, it's about Nintendo reveling in its E3 success. It is about a company that has effectively spent the last decade in its own self-made ghetto, turning to the industry and saying, 'I told you so' ... The wider world is coming back to videogames - and Nintendo is speaking its language. Anyway, the first three new releases in the Touch Generations line-up will be Big Brain Academy, the second title in the brain-training series, Magnetica, a marble-based puzzler, and Sudoku Gridmaster, a Sodoku game with over 400 puzzles. They're out this summer.

In a recent interview with MTV News, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto voiced his concern for the stereotypical image of gamers as kids alone in a dark room. He says that Nintendo wishes to change that image with the Wii, a sentiment made obvious by the wide array of people shown playing Wii in Nintendo's recent promotional videos." From the article: "I think it's time to break free from that stereotypical definition of what a gamer is, because until we do, we'll never truly be part of the national or worldwide culture.
