June 5th, 2006, 19:30 Posted By: wraggster
The continued strong sales of Nintendo's DS and DS Lite handheld consoles in Japan have brought the system to the verge of having sold 2.5 million units in the country in the latest set of regional hardware figures, with over a week left in the first half of the year.
2,498,720 units of DS hardware had been sold in the region by May 21st, with 1.635 million of them being the new DS Lite console, and 863,000 being the original DS console - meaning that the DS has the top two hardware slots so far this year.
Sony's PSP trails the DS by a huge margin, with only 772,000 units sold compared to the 2.49 million clocked up by Nintendo's system - and it's clear that the year to date has been all about handhelds, with the PS2 managing only 663,000 new sales in the first six months of the year.
Looking at the software charts, it's not hard to see where Nintendo's dominance is coming from. Seven of the top ten titles in the most recent software ranking were on the DS - and five of those titles have sold over a million units apiece, with three of them breaking the two million unit mark.
Although Bandai Namco's latest PS2 RPG, episodic title .hack//G.U. Volume 1, was the best selling game of the week - debuting with sales of over 90,000 units - it's hard to ignore the presence in the chart of More Brain Training for Adults (at number two with 2.28 million units sold to date), Brain Training for Adults (number four, 2.22 million units to date) and Animal Crossing Wild World (number six, 2.7 million units to date).
Konami's PS2 sports duo of World Soccer Winning Eleven 10 and Jikkyou Powerful Major League, at numbers five and seven respectively, make up the rest of the PS2 representation in the charts; while Nintendo's Tetris DS (number three) is sneaking towards half a million units, and the English language training edition of Brain Training for Adults (number eight) and Mario Kart DS (number ten) are both sitting at over a million units.
In fact, it's clear from looking at this mid-May chart, and other recent Japanese charts, that the market is seeing something of a recovery after a long-term slow decline - and it's a recovery being led almost entirely by Nintendo, whose multi-million selling DS titles are pumping new life into a business which was becoming accustomed to a procession of endless flash-in-the-pan hits that struggled to break the half-million mark.
The PSP, meanwhile, has clearly failed to capture the imagination of the Japanese market; a year and a half after it launched, the system is selling only marginally more than the venerable PS2, whose primary market now must surely lie in gamers replacing broken systems or buying second consoles for younger siblings.
What this means for the fate in Japan of the forthcoming PS3 and Wii consoles is a tricky subject. Both next-gen systems closely follow the philosophies of their handheld predecessors; the Wii is innovative, accessible, cheap and low-powered, while the PS3 is more traditional, very powerful, very expensive and fully kitted out in terms of media functionality.
Japanese consumers have clearly preferred the former approach in handheld hardware; if they show such a strong inclination in home console hardware, then Sony may have a real problem on its hands in its home territory, even despite the presence of franchises such as Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy on the system.

New Commercial release for Nintendo DS:

Those who have trained their brain to a healthy age can now test its "weight" in Big Brain Academy, the second title in Nintendo’s medley of mental minigames. The title includes a series of brainstimulating exercises designed to improve thinking, memorization, computation, analysis, and identification. After taking an initial test to identify cognitive strengths and weaknesses, players will receive a brain weight score that will hopefully increase over time with daily practice in each of the five categories.

EB Games, the big US online retailer, has opened for business when it comes to ordering Nintendo's Wii, with an initial order listing for the console, which we expect to debut in November or more likely December over here in Europe..
Surprisingly, for a Monday morning, we're not going to turn this into a 'guess the Wii release date' debate, but rather reveal the tech specs that EB Games has published alongside its ad, to give you a clue as to how it might actually perform.
Of course, most of them are already on the record, and comparisons with the PS3 and Xbox 360 are largely redundant given each next-gen console's differing architecture, but it's the first external naming of the specs, so we thought we'd share.
Meanwhile, John Swimmer, ATI's Senior PR Manager has also joined the Wii love-in, in an interview with GameDaily.biz where he promised what we saw of the Wii at E3 was "just the tip of the iceberg".
However, Swimmer then surprised us further by saying, "I really don't think that it's about the [specs]. I think it's about the innovation that it brings to the table. The motion-sensing, the always-on capability, which is really cool too - the fact that the chip is powerful enough and responsive enough to be there at a moment's notice, and I think that's pretty cool for the average gamer."
Wii tech specs on EB
CPU IBM Broadway 729MHz
Internal Storage 512MB Flash Memory
GPU ATI Hollywood
Optical Disc Drive 8cm GameCube/12cm Wii
Supported Resolution: up to 480p
12cm Disc Capacity 4.7GB (single) / 8.5GB (dual)

Last time we reported on Wii's web browsing features, being developed by Opera, the company's executive vice president Scott Hedrick wasn't in a particularly revelatory mood. Now though, he's feeling a bit more outspoken, revealing that Wii's browser will be available from launch and included on the console's 512MB internal Flash, amongst other things.
Speaking to website cubed3.com, Hendrick confirmed that, "The Opera browser is saved to the Flash ROM on the Wii console, and does not require a separate memory card as Opera for DS does," also promising, "The browser can be launched in only a few seconds, immediately delivering a great user experience."
.As for the browser's availability, Hendrick also confirmed that, "You will not have to buy Opera as an external item, as it will be available within Wii upon purchase. There is not a separate cartridge as there is for the DS."
Touching on the thorny issue of the browser's interface and how it will be used with the Wii's controller, in lieu of any announced keyboard/mouse/monitor attachment, Hendrick explained: "The biggest challenge has been to create the best 'living room' Web experience, leveraging the unique capabilities of Wii."
"Navigating the Web with Opera on the Wii will be as easy if not easier than using Opera on a desktop", Hendrick continued, "For Opera desktop users, surfing on the Wii will be a very familiar experience. Opera will be integrating its unique rendering technologies to compensate for the lower resolution of TVs and the added distance of the user from the TV screen [...] For example, fonts will be larger and the user interface will be simplified so that the Web is easier to view and use from a distance while navigating with the Wii remote."
As for navigation itself, Hendrick referred back to Opera's "built-in mouse gesture-based navigation" on PC, although didn't confirm whether we could expect to see such a system on Wii - although it sounds like a good bet to us. "Nintendo's vision is to expand the appeal of its products to as large of an audience as possible. We aim to make a browsing experience that leverages the intuitive capabilities of the Wii remote, ensuring that anyone from an experienced gamer to your grandma can surf the Web on Wii", said Hendrick.

Wanna try the old NES mario 1 on your PC then heres a killer clone of the game done in 3D, heres the details:
Super Mario Bros 2.5D is a remake of the classic, Super Mario Bros… in 3D. How can you remake a 2D game in 3D? Add depth! Defeat enemies as Mario in a whole new way with 3D views and 3D graphics!”
This game is very simple, like the origional Super Mario Bros. You are playing for two purposes:
-Beat every level, defeat Bowser, and save Princess Peach
-Get the top score on the high scores list.
When you start the game, there will be a small intro, followed by a prompt to press “Enter”. After you do that, the game will begin. You can run left and right by pressing the corresponding arrow keys. You can jump by pressing (And holding to jump higher) the up arrow key. You can change the view by moving the camera to see Mario at a different angle. You may do this by pressing W,A,S,and D. They move the camera in the corresponding direction. R makes the camera zoom in and F makes it zoom out.
Enemies: You can kill most enemies by jumping on top of them. If you hit them from the side, you will die. The enemies that look like mushrooms are called Goombas. You can kill them by jumping on top of them and they will dissappear. The enemies that look like turtles are called Koopas. You can jump on top of them, and they hide in their shells. When you only see the shell you may hit it again (Even from the side) and the shell will slide in that direction. If you get hit by a moving shell, you will die. To stop the shell, jump on top of it again. You can jump extra high by jumping off the top of a shell. You get 100 points for each enemy you kill and an extra 100 for each enemy you kill with a Koopa shell.
Items: ? Boxes can be opened by jumping up and hitting the bottom of it with your head. Most boxes contain a coin which is worth 1 point. Once you hit it, the box usually turns to a darker color. That means there is nothing left in the box. If a yellow and red mushroom comes out (TBA), you will grow into the large Mario. Now you can get hit once and not die! If you hit a box as big Mario that would normally contain a “Power Up” mushroom, a Power Flower (Or Fire Flower) will appear. If you get it, you can now shoot fireballs! There are 2 other mushrooms; 1UP and Poison. 1UP gives you an extra life. Poison kills you.
Bricks: The blocks that look like many bricks stacked up can be destroyed the same way a ? Box can be unlocked. This can help for reaching secret areas.
Pipes: The green pipes sticking up out of the ground can have many purposes. Normal pipes do not do anything. Warp pipes (Marked with a white arrow) warp you to the next level. Pihranna pipes contain pihrannas. They go in and out of the pipe and can only be killed with the Power Flower or a Koopa Shell.
Flags: At the end of most levels is a flag. The higher up you hit the flag pole (On your first hit only), the more bonus points you get. When you hit the flag pole, you go to the next level. Good luck!

Cubed posted this rather interesting interview
Cubed3: Will the Opera browser be embedded from launch on the 512MB internal Flash or included with the system via a memory card?
Scott Hedrick: The Opera browser is saved to the Flash ROM on the Wii console, and does not require a separate memory card as Opera for DS does. The browser can be launched in only a few seconds, immediately delivering a great user experience.
C3: Are there any plans to include advertising via the Opera browser on Wii?
SH: No, there are no plans to include advertisements within the Opera browser user interface for Wii, but the same ads you see on Web pages on your desktop will show up when browsing using Opera on Wii. Nintendo hasn’t confirmed if Opera could be used to deliver Web-based advertisements into games, for example.
C3: Many users have expressed concerns over typing using the Wii controller. How are you aiming to get around this?
SH: Opera has gotten over this hurdle on many devices before, even for the Nintendo DS. On the DS, Opera is utilizing the touch screen, navigating with a stylus and inputting information with the on-screen keyboard. Many devices that do not have an external keyboard use an on-screen keyboard – Opera works quite well in this way. We have been working closely with Nintendo to find the best way to overcome this challenge on Wii.

Lazyone has posted this news of his work on porting Wolfenstein 3D to the Nintendo DS:
There has been a lack of updates lately, and those were caused by a lack of interest in the project on my part. It seems that trying to work on something that was built up on cheap hacks started to become less fun so I just stopped altogether.
But now, starting all over again I have done some major changes to the original SDL source port which have made it’s way to the NDS.
What has changed since the last release?
- Most menus and the 3d renderer now run at a native 256×192 resolution falling back to 320×200 for larger images.
- Gamma correction and palette conversions are now done properly, which means colours are much brighter and the game no longer has a washed out look to it.
- Aside from having tons of sprites on screen, it runs at a full 30fps which is not a limitation of the hardware but the rate which the 3d world is refreshed.
- The status bar has been removed from the gameplay window, this means the top screen is used exclusively for the 3d display while in-game. There are plans to re-create the status bar on the bottom screen.
In addition to the change from a poorly coded html website, the change to this format will allow me to attach various pre-pre releases for those wanting to play around with the latest changes. Not right away, but hopefully once I get things cleaned up and commented the source will be included with each release.
Check out screenshots of the old and new versions of Wolfenstein placed side by side.

Cabel, the gentleman known for his astounding DS Lite review videos, has recently provided the hungry intertron with sustenance in the form of a tasty appetizer Starfox Command video in his E3 2006 wrap-up. The video, which is a bit on the short side and fails to provide any kind of long-term satisfaction, shows Fox flying about one of the game's areas, dodging Tesla-like towers that fire red pulsing beams.
