The success of Kingdom Hearts sparked Buena Vista Games to start their own anime styled RPG series. They pulled Jupiter who did Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories in the mix to develop Spectrobes, a new franchise that is starting out on the DS. Spectrobes stars two Interplanetary Patrol officers Rallen and Jeena who discover fossilized creatures called Spectrobes. Rallen and Jeena set out to excavate these friendly monsters because they are the key to defeating Krawl, an evil force that could destroy the galaxy. To excavate Spectrobes players blow air into the microphone to clear dust then use the touch screen to pull the fossil out. Once that’s done the Spectrobes can be trained and learn to respond to a player’s voice. Does this remind anyone else of Pokemon? Perhaps the only difference is the gameplay which has real time battles instead of turn based combat. Fighting is a bit simplistic one button is mapped for using Rallen’s sword and another for his laser. Spectrobes still has a long way to go, but Buena Vista Games is looking beyond the DS for the series. If it is a hit they will bring the series to other forms of media. Spectrobes TV anyone? Below we have some screen shots of an early build of the game.

News from Lik Sang
Earlier this year we covered the US release of the very popular Brain Age. Now the sequel is also out in English however, we can discover why when released in Japan, Big Brain Academy was the fastest selling DS title to date, and why both titles are still today in the Top 3 of the Japanese Charts. Where the first release focused on the age of your brain, this tosses your brain down on the scales and measures the weight. Coming from the mind of neuroscientist Professor Ryuta Kawashima, whose brain training books have sold over a million copies, each activity takes less than a minute to complete. As you can see from the middle screen below, there's five categories of challenges, and your performance is shown across thinking, analyzing, memorizing, computing, and identifying. For a bit of fun too, you can also compare your grey matter to the brains of famous people across history, and perhaps find out if you should be a world class doctor, or run for POTUS [Editor: for non-West-Wing-followers, that's President Of The United States].
Speed and accuracy are put to the test here through simple but deep mini games. On the first screen above for example there's animals on scales, and you must quickly touch which is the heaviest. There were just two scales to think about there, but you can imagine the workout you'll get when many more appear and multiple animals on each one! Here you can play a demo of it online, plus other mini games. A practice mode lets you get comfortable with the game's fast-paced assault of problems, while new to the sequel is a wireless battle mode, letting eight players compete with only one game cartridge to see who has the juiciest brain (pointless fact - Cannibals who eat the brain usually contract a rare disease called Kuru, but the rest of a body is all good, so to speak). In stock now and for only US$ 29.90, at last we can all get into shape while simply sitting on the couch wolfing down chips. Don't forget either that with the DS being completely region free, anyone the world over can import this.

Nintendo executive Katsuya Eguchi has revealed that the Wii version of Animal Crossing may allow you to send messages to fellow players via your PC and mobile phone.
In an interview with Kikizo, Eguchi confirmed that the Wii Connect 24 service will ensure that your console is online all the time, allowing for all sorts of exciting possibilities.
"With the example of Animal Crossing, one of the things that might be possible is while the player isn't even actively playing in their town, a friend of theirs could come and visit their town and, for instance, leave them a letter or a gift," he explained.
"Another application might be someone could send a letter from their cellphone or from an email address on a PC to the Wii, and then the player living in the town in Animal Crossing could receive that letter."
The Wii will most likely use a Friend Codes system so you can communicate with other players, according to Eguchi, although you won't necessarily be able to use your current DS code: "There probably will be Friend Codes for the Wii version, however we're not so sure about compatibility. So it's most likely that everyone will be using new codes."
Eguchi went on to discuss the Wii's remote controller and the possibilities for producing a range of add-ons, such as the light gun prototype that was on show at E3.
"I could give you my ideas of [Wii controller attachments] that are possible, but that might end up becoming a product, so right now I can't really say," Eguchi stated.
"Of course, if software calls for a light gun, we'll make a light gun. If the software requires a guitar, then maybe we'll make a guitar. Our number one priority is always to provide the ultimate gameplay experience, so if the game requires a peripheral, then we'll supply a peripheral."
As for the debate over whether Sony nicked Nintendo's idea for a motion-sensing controller - well, Eguchi's not convinced they're all that similar.
"There's a significant difference between the Wii controller and the PS3 controller. If we're just talking about the motion sensor, with the Wii there are two parts to the controller - each hand can move freely.
"But with the PS3 controller, both of your hands are kind of stuck, and I get the feeling that will limit freedom of movement."
Hmm. Anyway, Guitar Hero Wii, anyone?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl director Masahiro Sakurai is keeping fans informed on the development of the Wii fighter, by answering burning questions on his official Smash Bros. website.
Courtesy of a forum user, the Japanese-fielded questions have been translated over to our native tongue, and some new 'Brawl details revealed. Among the info splurged, Sakurai noted that the Wii instalment of the series will stress "easiness" over the small details of combat, to help make the game easier to play for newcomers.
The 'Brawl director also touched on the game's character line-up, noting that it hasn't been finalised yet. Sakurai said that the reveal of Solid Snake means that they're contemplating adding one or two more non-Nintendo fighters to the game, but he notes that the characters must have appeared on Nintendo systems at some point to be considered.
Even though an online mode was already confirmed by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata at E3 2005, Sakurai isn't as quick to champion the now year-old announcement. The 'Brawl team are apparently looking into the feature and hope to include online play in time for the game's 2007 release, but we're told there are currently no plans for leader boards or the like.
Interestingly, Sakurai also mentioned a possible Nintendo DS entry in the Smash Bros. series. While he said there's nothing in development at the moment, he didn't rule out a stylus-waving Smash Bros. for the future. Keep your eyes on this space for more Smash Bros. revelations.

After unveiling a host of intriguing new RPGs at E3, it appears Square Enix has even more surprises in store for the Dragon Quest series with the launch of a new teaser website for the as-yet-unknown Dragon Quest J.
For those of you not in the know, Dragon Quest is an amazingly popular RPG over in Japan and recently debuted over in the West with Dragon Quest VIII. Quite what the Dragon Quest J is or indeed which platform its headed for is as yet unknown to the wider world, but all is set to be unveiled on June 12 in Japanese mag Shonen Jump.
Wells it would be, but as usual CVG has the jump. Shonen is a weekly Manga round up published over in Japan and what it will actually unveil is Dragon Quest Monster Joker, a spin-off from the main Dragon quest series heading to Nintendo DS. If you remember the monster arena from DQ VIII, you'll have a pretty good idea of what's in store, as you'll be tasked with building up and training teams of monsters and battling them against each other in a series of Pokemon-style face offs.
DQ Monster Joker is being developed by the full Dragon Quest team and will also be fully 3D. The title's due to make an appearance before the end of this year over in Japan. Our sources are also suggesting it will hopefully come over here to the West, but it'll probably be 2007 before that happens.
Anyway, good news for DQ fans and monster battlers in general. We'll bring you more on this intriguing new DQ entry as we have it.

ls5 posted this news/release:
BatchDPG is a program I've been working on, because I was irritated with dpgenc for a number of reasons. However, as I simply do not know how to create a DPG header, it still uses dpgenc. So why did I create this program? Well, there are a number of reasons;
- Support for pretty much any file you can play in DirectShow based media players such as Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. This means you're not limited to AVI, WMV and MPG anymore.
- It's very easy to add subtitles. Currently only SRT, SSA and ASS can be selected, but it's very simple for me to change the code so it supports others. Anything VSFilter (the best subtitle renderer around) can handle is therefore possible to add.
- Better quality, both video and audio wise. Audio because a better resampler is used, and video because a better resizer is used and extra options are added to the mencoder commandline (mencoder is the program dpgenc uses for the video conversion to MPEG-1). In fact, you can choose different video quality settings according to your demands. The High settings is quite slow, so Medium is recommended, while Low should offer quality equivalent to the dpgenc default settings.
- Set any bitrate you want. This means you can go above the normal limit of 256 too. Note that this is just a target bitrate. It will probably use less if you set it very high.
- Max video bitrate option. This helps prevent those skips which sometimes occur. I havn't done any serious testing, but MoonShell seems to be able to handle a total bitrate of 512 kbps (video+audio) perfectly.
- Automatic framerate calculation. This assumes Height * Width * FPS = 737280. So with a 256x192 (Fullscreen) video, this would result in the framerate being 15. A 256x144 (Widescreen) video would have a bitrate of 20.
- Batch encoding! You can safely leave a number of files in the queue and it will automatically convert one after the other.
So how does it do all these things? Well, the first thing it does is create an Avisynth AVS file. Avisynth is a great video editing system, but unfortunately dpgenc can't directly open AVS files. To circumvent that, VFAPIConv is used to create a dummy AVI file, which dpgenc can read. BatchDPG then creates a dpgenc.ini with necessary instructions, after which it will start dpgenc itself and do the actual video and audio encoding.
The installation instructions are as followed:
- Install Avisynth from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=57023. Make sure to get the 2.5 version, not the 2.0.
- Install this file to any place you like: http://rapidshare.de/files/22189277/BatchDPG.exe.html / http://www.mytempdir.com/715514.

[Wii] Nintendo Surprises Keep Coming
The Nintendo controller will feature a microphone and will store a user phonebook/address book while it will be used as a VoIP phone and will help gamers communicate while online without the need for a headset. All this comes thanks to a few Nintendo patents unveiled by revolution which demonstrate exactly how the microphone will be implemented.
Nintendo's controller surprises keep coming in and as the details are revealed so is an underlying theme to the company's plan for the device. The new details mention a microphone built-in to the headset which will allow the controller to be used as a straight-forward VoIP phone. The news also mentions that users will be able to use the phone for video calls although it does not clarify exactly how a camera will come into play in the setup. The interesting news however, relates to the phone/address book details which will be stored on the controller suggesting that Nintendo expects each user of the Wii in the household to own their own Wiimote.
The inclusion of a microphone built-into the controller, along with the speaker announced at E3, will also offer gamers more freedom during online play as they will be able to communicate with fellow gamers without the need for a headset. This makes sense as most images we have of people playing with the infamous device, show them standing up and at some distance from the console.

Walaber Posted this News/release:
This is my first DS game I'm currently working on, called "Rubber Bands". it is based on a simple particle physics library that I wrote, that has support for static lines, particles, stiff rods, and "rubber bands", which are the main feature of the game. the game itself is a collection of mini-games that are based around the physics.
I hope to have the game done soon for release... it currently works on Dualis, and on the hardware of course.
Beta Version Released
OK, here is the beta version for all of you to test. please don't spread this around yet, as it is not quite ready for official release yet.
I would like to hear any problems you have with the game! for those without hardware, this game should run fine on the latest version of Dualis (run the .nds version)

JimmyL has updated his rather excellent RTS game for the Nintendo DS:
Yet another build with some memory bugs fixed, this should make the game more stable for both online and offline play. Also, different versions aren't compatible with each other online, so try to use the latest version otherwise people won't see the servers you are running.
And same note as earlier, in order to play an online game your ds needs to be preconfigured to connect to your router using an official Nintendo game (mario kart, animal crossing, metroid, etc.) and if you want to host games you need to forward UPD port 9999 to your ds.

This video shows the entire demo of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass that was available at Nintendo's booth during E3. The video, which is filmed exceptionally well, shows all of you exactly how Link will control and interact with the environment. Just make yourself some popcorn before starting to watch, this video is on par with the length-time of a full episode of Scrubs.

Grey posted this news:
Alright, Half-Life 2: Episode One is done and over with. It's a little short, but an awesome game, and I can't wait for Episode Two. So now it's time to start thinking about Dissonance again. I have been working on it off and on lately, but I had a problem in that my code base got so badly out of whack that I had to resync back to my last working subversion revision. So I lost about maybe 100 - 200 lines of code that didn't work right. I also started playing with the CVS dswifi library again, and unfortunately it doesn't fix the #1 bug, so I'm going to try to get a simple test app to sgstair to demonstrate the problem that I have. Depending on how much I get done, I might release a 0.2.2 release if dswifi is fixed before I get playlist support finished. If I were to release such a thing right at this very minute, it would probably feature an easy way of changing stations, and not much more. I am hoping to have playlist support, a code cleanup, and increased volume before the next release, but we'll see how that goes. I am intending to release the next version within a day or two of the first working release of dswifi. So anyway, that's my status report for the time being.
