Nintendo has filed a new patent which suggests that you'll be able to chat to other Wii owners via some an instant messaging program.
The patent is for a "Messaging service for videogame systems with buddy list that displays game being played.
"Each game system is configured to connect to the web server computer via the Internet and to communicate status data indicative of an activity engaged in by a user thereof. The web server computer generates a session file indicative of user status and the status of each of two or more persons on a buddy list of the user." In other words, you'd be able to see which of your friends are online, and what they're playing - just like with Xbox Live.
The patent also suggests you'll be able to build up a gamer profile, entering personal details as well as high scores and a list of your favourite games. Avatars will be constructed from various elements - so you can choose from a selection of eyes, ears, facial hair etc. Alternatively, you can upload a picture of yourself.
It seems you'll be able to chat using an on-screen keyboard or microphone, with all sorts of options to block people, change alerts and that sort of thing. The patent also hints that a portable console might make use of the technology - we're assuming that means the DS.
Since this is a patent, there's no guarantee that all of the features mentioned above will make it into the final product - but it's certainly an indication that Nintendo's thinking about them.

Ryan FB has released a Genesis Emulator for the Nintendo DS:
Okay, 0.1.1 is up now (files are in the same location as the first post). Not any major changes, but hopefully a few fixes. The frameskip code was completely rewritten, and may be a little better now. Most importantly, the IRQ/VBlank code was redone and might fix the issues some users have been seeing where they just get a black screen after loading a ROM. A special thanks goes out to LiraNuna for helping me with these fixes and putting up with my stupid questions..

LiraNuna posted this news:
First of all I would like to announce that my WonderSwan emulator is now called dualSwan - A much better name in my opinion.
Second, I want to show off my progress with some screenies. Layered tiles were implemented with FluBBa’s help - huge thanks flies to his direction!
The FPS you see on the screenshots are close to original results on HW. but since dualis refuses to emulate in full speed - add another ~6FPS to get the original results on real HW.
Low FPS on games occures because of a poor NEC CPU core implementation. Don’t you worry, it will be much better
Have fun drooling over.

To the newcomers: there are two videos! Don't forget to see the video from the first post below too!
Here is a video of the demo loop of Quake. The video is a little more stable because my hands weren’t shaking it while I was playing like the other one. Actually the video from before it was actually playable because I didn't have the client side of the code working yet. Enjoy...
Edit: It seems its twice as long as it should be, I'll repost another video later.

IGN carries a good op-ed piece this week on the importance of the Virtual Console to the overall success of the Nintendo Wii.
Whilst it was clearly the innovative Wii controller that wowed the E3 crowds, some of whom were patient enough to wait in line for four hours to get their mitts on the thing, there is still much, much more to the Wii, which Nintendo will be shouting loudly about over the coming months.
The WiiConnect24 service which enables your Wii to effectively be "always on", just like your DS in sleep mode, will also enable Nintendo to deliver demos and content to your living room (and to your DS via the Wii) whilst you are sound asleep.
Thus in one fell swoop eliminating the need for overpriced 'Official' print magazines with their 'Official' demo discs (ie only thing of value) stuck to the cover. That era is well and truly over. Which can only be a good thing, for both the forests of the earth and for the young and impressionable gamers of the earth. Today's announcement that Future Publishing's long-serving chief executive, Greg Ingham has handed in his notice, is surely testament to this.
We digress. As well as the Wii's amazing control method and WiiConnect24, it's the Virtual Console that SPOnG is truly excited about and the IGN piece hits the nail on the head: "Of the added functionality embedded in the Wii, however, nothing provides more curiosity or true potential... as the Virtual Console. The possibility of downloading nearly every classic game from our younger years spanning every major system is awesome, and the added interest Nintendo has shown in ushering smaller developers into the next generation through smaller-budget downloadable games holds limitless potential."
There are clear similarities between the Virtual Console concept and Xbox Live Arcade, the main difference being the fact that Microsoft's backlog of classic arcade games relies purely on third-parties, rather than white-hot first party content in Nintendo's case. The amazing number of high-quality titles from the last twenty years of Nintendo's history should also ensure that the Wii has a bolstered launch line-up, with Virtual Console titles on offer as well as sixteen (so far) superb new titles we've already seen.
The Virtual Console should also help Nintendo (and it's many vociferous fans) ride out those inevitable 'drought' periods, especially in the first year following the autumn/fall and Xmas/holiday seasons after launch. As IGN outlines: "the backlog is so immense.... Even if Nintendo released a new game every week (four-five games a month ), it'd still only need 52 games a year; an order that could be filled with NES titles alone. That's marketing power that only comes with years of consistent product."
As the IGN piece concludes: "Xbox may have a few strong titles in the mix right now, but all Nintendo has to do is launch a marketing campaign that showcases as small as the top five titles on every previous system and the backlog already blows away the Live Arcade list as it stands. How do you compete with two decades of the biggest names in gaming? The answer is, you simply can't."
We can't wait for that marketing campaign to roll-out, and we'll be sure to bring you news on how Nintendo are going to play it as soon as we get it.

Famitsu reports that, according to Satoru Iwata, Wii and DS will share a relationship similar to the one between GameCube and GBA. For select Wii titles, the DS will be used as a bonus touch screen controller. In addition, Wii will potentially expand the playing field for certain DS games and will serve as a hub for downloadable DS demos via WiiConnect24.
Pokémon Battle Revolution will be the first Wii game to feature DS connectivity. Owners of a DS and Pokémon Diamond/Pearl will be able to transfer their critters to the Wii's Battle Revolution, and vice versa. Granted, this is a fine bonus, but we'd like to see more innovative uses of the Wii-DS hook up for future titles.

Sega has revealed that it is working on a new game for Wii, which is currently going under the title of Bleach.
The game will be based on the anime series of the same name which focuses on the exploits of the flame-haired Ichigo Kurosaki, a 15-year-old high school student with the ability to see ghosts.
This won't be Sega's first Bleach game as the developer/publisher is currently working on Bleach Advance for GBA and Bleach: Souten ni Kakeru Unmei for DS. The latter is a fighting game so we can probably expect a similar action-based title for Wii.

It was already known that Justice League Heroes was coming to save the day this fall, but today Eidos added two new members to its superheroic roster (no, not the Wonder Twins). Eidos has announced that it is working on Justice League Heroes for the Nintendo DS and Justice League Heroes: The Flash for the Game Boy Advance.
While it bears the same name as its console brethren, the DS game will actually be a prequel to those games and it will let players control Batman, Superman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman as they try to save the world from certain destruction. The game will feature stylus control, destructible environments, and heroic helpers like Aquaman and Green Arrow.
As for Justice League Heroes: The Flash, it naturally centers around the Fastest Man Alive, who will race through the game pummeling ne'er-do-wells, unlocking new combos, and slowing down time to get an advantage in battle. In keeping with the Justice League theme, Flash will be able to call in help from A-list heroes like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and others.
Both games are being developed by teams with previous heroic experience on Nintendo's portables. Justice League Heroes on the DS is being handled by Sensory Sweep Studios, which worked on the DS version of Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Justice League Heroes: The Flash is being developed by WayForward, which recently released X3: The Official Game on the GBA. Both games are due out alongside the console versions of Justice League Heroes this fall.

The long-awaited unveiling of the price point and launch date for the Wii console looks likely to happen at the Game Convention, which takes place from August 24th to 27th in Leipzig, Germany.
The timing of the announcement has been the subject of intense speculation, with many anticipating that it would come at the Tokyo Game Show in late September - but this week the firm revealed that it plans to announce the date by September.
Meanwhile, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has said that the company is not expecting to make a loss in the year following the launch of its next-generation console - unlike rivals Sony and Microsoft.
Speaking at a Tokyo press conference, Iwata said: "It is a strange notion that a game console always leads to mounting losses in the beginning."
"We can't promise we won't have even a one-yen loss, but we are not expecting an enormous loss... We are working to make the Wii business a healthy one from the first year."
Nintendo has forecast a growth in operating profit of 22 per cent this business year, thanks at least in part to the huge popularity of the DS handheld. Sony, however, has warned that the operating loss for its games subsidiary is due to stand at YEN 100 billion (EURO 691 million) due to costs associated with the launch of the PS3.

June 7th, 2006, 22:39 Posted By: wraggster
Japanese console giant Nintendo has announced that it's to increase its production capacity for the Nintendo DS handheld by 25 per cent over the summer in an attempt to meet increasing demand for the console.
At present, the firm turns out around 1.6 million hardware units a month - but with 2.5 million units sold in Japan alone this year, and the hugely successful DS Lite version set to launch in the USA and Europe shortly, this figure needs to grow.
Nintendo is targeting 2 million units per month output by the end of summer, according to a Bloomberg report this week - but if the DS Lite proves to be as successful elsewhere in the world as it has been in Japan, even that may not be enough.
Japanese consumers are currently snapping up around 600,000 units of the DS Lite every month, leaving just 1.4 million per month for every other territory in the world. Nintendo may soon be faced with having to increase capacity once again, to avoid a repeat of the massive shortages in the channel which were seen in many territories last Christmas and early in the New Year.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has told a business briefing in Tokyo that the company will unveil the price and release date for the Wii at the very latest by September.
Okay, it's scarcely earth-shattering news, but at least we now know it's named the day, erm, when it'll name the day, which is just the excuse we need to indulge in a little informed Wii launch speculation.
Nintendo clearly has to get the console in shops in time for Christmas and it also probably has to take into account the launch of the PS3 on November 17.
Although we won't be naming our sources, our latest enquires have yielded an early December release for the Wii as the latest candidate, which would give it some clear blue water from the PS3 and plunge it straight into the Christmas shopping feeding frenzy.
Of course, Nintendo could surprise us all by going even earlier and stealing a march on Sony's launch, but early December is what the word on the street is currently saying. If wii dig up any more, we'll be sure to let you know.

We're big fans of Atlus' stich-'em-up operation sim game Trauma Center (which hit Nintendo's DS earlier this year in Europe) here in the office. Despite a few interface quirks and random difficulty spikes which have caused people to forcibly remove our DS's, largely through fear for their own safety as a torrent of expletives rip through the air, it's a charming and compelling title.
Imagine our delight then, when we heard that Atlus was set to bring Trauma Center: Second Opinion to Nintendo's forthcoming Wii console. Although not much is known about the game yet, it's set to use the precision of the Wii's remote to simulate various operating techniques, in much the same way as the original Trauma Center put the DS's stylus to great use.
Current reports suggest Second Opinion will be launching around the same time as the Wii itself - but, in the meantime, we've got a brand new trailer for your delectation and delight. Well, we say trailer, it's more of a slideshow. Can we have some more in-game footage next time, please Atlus?

Nintendo's Wii may have won all the plaudits at this year's E3, but that doesn't mean its success is going to be vital to Nintendo's profit margins.
How do we know? Well, the big N admitted as much in a briefing over in Tokyo today, with company president Satoru Iwata saying that even if the company meets its sales targets, the Wii will add little to Nintendo's considerable cash stash and profitability - in the short term at least.
Iwata said: "Although I am not going to give a specific sales target for the Wii console, we promise here to achieve sales sharply above those that we have achieved with our Gamecube console."
But that's not necessarily bad news, as it means Nintendo isn't depending on the Wii's success in quite the same way as Sony is really counting on the PlayStation 3 to contribute to the company's balance books.
Although Iwata wouldn't name a specific figure, Nintendo is aiming to sell around six million Wii's up to the end of the next financial year in March 2007, with around 17 million pieces of software attaching alongside the console.
However, the company also said it had ramped up production of the ultra profitable DS handheld Lite, to around 2.2 million units a month since May, undoubtedly to meet the huge demand which will accompany US and European Lite launches.

DSQuake
John Gillote:
Hi and welcome everyone,
Back during the last two weeks of January I started working on a port of Quake for the Nintendo DS. Progress was slow at first because a lot of the code had to be reworked and from the inherent hardware limitations of the DS. However in the two weeks I worked on it I did get pretty far and it is playable. Unfortunately I have quite a bit on my plate and I had all of the intensions of getting back to work on DSQuake but I haven't yet and it has been sitting on my computer for months now.
So what is working? Well it’s playable like I said with decent frame rates 20-30fps. No sound and no net code yet. No textures yet either but I did manage to color the triangles appropriately by peeking into the textures and using that for a temporary basis. Also the controls are basically the same as the Metroid Prime Hunters game for the DS.
For the curious and the silly skeptics here is a video for of me playing E1M1:
http://www.xbox-scene.com/index.php?...yuFFEkegQerZEd
Initially I had wanted to finish the entire port my self and post it for everyone to play but today I changed my mind because the project is simply not progressing at the rate I wanted. So in the interest of playing one of the greatest games ever made on one of the greatest consoles ever made I'm looking for a few clever programmers to help the cause.
So if you have an intimate knowledge of the Quake engine and/or know how to program graphics, sound or net code for the Nintendo DS and you want to help out Email me at DSQuake@gmail.com . Sorry I’m not looking for amateurs as this project will take experienced people.
http://dsquake.blogspot.com/
Let's all wish him the best of luck , because this is one hell of a cool project.

Ryan FB has released a Genesis Emulator for the Nintendo DS:
Ported this over the weekend, I think it's in a state now where some people will be able to use it. Initial reports are that it has issues running on CF-based carts, I only have a SuperCard SD to test with so I haven't been able to debug it on CF to see what's going on.
Copy it to your media, then copy over the Genesis ROMs you want to play (it should be able to play ROMs with .BIN, .GEN, and .SMD extensions). There's no sound, but since it uses the Cyclone 68k core which is optimized for ARM it runs well for the most part. Scaling is done in-software right now so the downscale isn't as fast or good as it could be. There's no double buffering yet so you might see tearing on some games. Y/B/A are A/B/C.
Compatibility is good for the most part, with some games it's hard to tell due to copy protection code. Pirates! Gold for example, has the same issue under my emulator and a few others I've tried where it just reboots every time you press a button, and I'm thinking it's due to copy protection stuff.
The emulator I'm porting has some YM2612/sound emulation code but I'm not sure how well it works (if at all), because it's not enabled in the original version either.

Bronto posted a new version of NDS Mail, Heres whats new:
- Uses latest dswifi version
- Improved connection code - should be faster & more reliable now
- Put keep-ap-connection-alive function back in
- mail display slightly improved
- asks you if you want to save your settings when leaving the settings screen
- reply button disabled for feeds
As you certainly noticed, progress is a little slow lately. I'm quite busy with other things at the moment, so no SSL yet. I would probably need about 1-2 free days for a first version. I'm planning to make it available in some way to other DS developers once it's done
