But that doesn't mean that Wii games will simply look like GameCube titles using a unique control method. Nintendo already told us that the hardware being used at E3 was not finalized. Moreover, during the show GameDaily BIZ met with ATI, which is providing the "Hollywood" GPU for the Wii, and John Swinimer, Senior Public Relations Manager of Consumer Products, emphasized that the Wii architecture is capable of producing far better results than what we've witnessed thus far. "I think what you saw [on Wii] was just the tip of the iceberg of what the Hollywood chip can bring to the Nintendo Wii," he said.
We tried to pry some design specs out of ATI, but Swinimer would only offer the following: "I'm really not here to talk about the design specs... other than the fact that ATI worked closely with Nintendo. The team that worked on this chip also worked on the Flipper chip that was in GameCube, and they've been working with Nintendo for a very long time so there's a great chemistry with the two teams working together."
He continued, "I really don't think that it's about the [specs]; I think it's about the innovation that it brings to the table—the motion-sensing, the always-on capability, which is really cool too—the fact that the chip is powerful enough and responsive enough to be there at a moment's notice, and I think that's pretty cool for the average gamer."

Though many game pundits have called the face off between the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii the "next-generation console war," one of gaming's leading lights does not see the conflict in such terms.
"Nintendo is not working on a next-generation console," said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata in an interview with Japanese news service Nikkei Business' Tech On! spinoff. "'Next-generation' implies that the console is an extension of previous installments. We believe that extending our current line will not lead to larger markets, and could possibly even lead to smaller markets."
In the Tech On! interview, Iwata further distanced the Wii from other next-gen consoles with some familiar arguments. He said the increasing complexity of gameplay has put many novices off, and that the Wii was going after said novices with an interface that "would appeal to anyone."
As proof, Iwata cited the success of the DS as a reason for the Wii controller's existence. "When Nintendo opted for the dual screens for the DS, more people were shaking their heads," he said. "Yet the market turned out favorable to the DS. ... I feel that this had led to more people looking upon our new [Wii] controller favorably."
Still, the decision to go with the so-called "Wii-wand" form factor was a difficult one. "Some of our staff disagreed with changing it," said Iwata. "Yet after some hands-on time with the prototypes, we knew we had a working formula."
Iwata also told Tech On! that mass appeal was the main factor behind the decision to add a speaker to the Wii-wand. "We introduced it fairly recently," he said. "Households sporting 5.1 channel speakers will certainly be able to enjoy realistic sound, yet not all homes have such audio equipment."
Potential Wii-owners will likely be most interested in Iwata's comments on WiiConnect24, the Wii's online network. Unlike Xbox Live, which makes users download demos, WiiConnect24 will automatically deliver Wii and DS demos to any connected console--presumably at the user's discretion
"Let's say your Wii is connected to the Internet in a mode that allows activation on a 24-hour basis," explains Iwata. "This would allow Nintendo to send monthly promotional demos for the DS, during the night, to the Wii consoles in each household. Users would wake up each morning, find the LED lamp on their Wii flashing, and know that Nintendo has sent them something. They would then be able to download the promotional demo from their Wiis to their Nintendo DSes."

Cheaper, smaller games will enable developers to focus on gameplay, says Nintendo boss
The Virtual Console functions of the Wii platform will enable small games to find a large audience, according to Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, who says that the download system is an alternative to the "single-minded" approach of the industry at present.
Speaking to the Tech-On section of Japanese newspaper Nikkei Business Publications, Iwata addressed the merits of the Virtual Console as a platform for creating new content, not just for emulating old games - the use with which most prospective purchases will be most familiar.
He implied that games which launch on the Virtual Console could cost as little as 500 Yen (around 3.50 Euro), a tenth of the expected retail price of new games on the system in Japan.
"When creating a packaged game to be priced at 5,000 yen, developers tend to feel the need to create a rich game," he explained. "Yet it is possible to create a reasonably entertaining game in 2 months with a team of three. Offering such games for 500 yen over a network could lead to a reasonable number of people purchasing it. By offering an environment that allows this, we hope to encourage more developers to pursue basic yet enjoyable gameplay."
However, Iwata was quick to point out that Nintendo will continue to develop "epic" titles as well - and that even in the firm's new vision of the future, there is plenty of room for titles such as Zelda, Fire Emblem or Earthbound.
"Content-rich games have their own merit, and I have no intention of discrediting them," he continued. "Such games are important in their own right, and will continue to be in demand. Still - think about it - eating French cuisine or a full dinner each day would quickly lead to boredom, wouldn't it? You'll want a simple bowl of rice and soup every now and then."
"Our intention with the Wii is to propose an alternate approach to gaming business," he concluded, "as the gaming industry is currently far too single-minded."
Iwata admitted to Nikkei Business Publications that Nintendo had fallen from its former position as "champion" of the console market to being a "challenger" - and that "challengers have a hard time getting the market to listen to them."
However, he believes that the success of the Nintendo DS has helped to build momentum and support for the firm's innovations in control mechanisms, which he believes will help to "propel the Wii forward" when it appears later this year.

Q: What will the Wii offer when connected to the Internet?
Iwata: I'll give you a specific example we are planning for. Let's say your Wii is connected to the Internet in a mode that allows activation on a 24-hour basis. This would allow Nintendo to send monthly promotional demos for the DS, during the night, to the Wii consoles in each household. Users would wake up each morning, find the LED lamp on their Wii flashing, and know that Nintendo has sent them something. They would then be able to download the promotional demo from their Wii's to their Nintendo DS's. This will, of course, be possible in gaming stores too, but I think users will enjoy being able to do this within their homes. The key merit here is having promotional material delivered to your home, instead of having to go collect it yourself.
Q: So you hope users will use their gaming consoles every day?
Iwata: More and more users have concentrated periods of gaming following major releases, and stop playing for months once that is over. I hope the Wii, like the Nintendo DS, will have its power turned on every day. To lead users to do that, we need to offer something new each day. That is why we thought of a system that would allow us to change our offerings during the night. I feel that allowing the system to stay connected to the Net throughout the night is a valid application of semiconductor technology.
We have nothing against advanced technology. Though many seem to feel that Nintendo is anti-technological, this is totally untrue. There are multiple ways in which you can apply new technology. Some design Formula 1 cars, others design hybrid cars. We have merely spent a lot of time discussing which approach would help us increase our customer base.

Kouji Okada is founder and president of Gaia, who released Jewel Summoner on PSP this January and is also the creator of the now-legendary Megami Tensei series of RPGs. He says the biggest surprise of E3 was "definitely the price of the PS3. As a Blu-Ray player it's cheap; as a game console, it's expensive. You might enjoy the games you get, though really. Is it a 'game machine' or an 'entertainment machine'? Then there's the Wii. The games are playable and sharp. They're friendly, though I imagine they'd get kind of boring after a while."
Noritaka Funamizu, executive director of Craft and Meister, makers of the Monster Hunter series, believes that "the network capabilities will sell the PlayStation 3." Maybe he knows something we don't about how cool Monster Hunter 3 is going to be? He also believes the Wii "has some potential none of us can imagine yet." His final comment is that "Final Fantasy XIII looks really cool. I watched that movie and thought, yes, this is what it means to make a game people love at first sight."
Tecmo's inimitable Tomonobu Itagaki says things only he can say: "It is most interesting to see Sony made the decisive judgment to revert the PlayStation 3 controller to its true shape. It takes great bravery for a company to change something that has already been announced."
In closing, he says "The Xbox 360 was doing well as always. Everyone smiled when they saw the footage of our upcoming games. America's love for the Xbox 360 has yet to waver. If only America would just explain Japan why they love the Xbox 360 already."
Akimi Watanabe, producer at Flight Plan, makers of Black Matrix and Summon Night, believes that "The PlayStation 3 looks like it might still be widely used ten years from now." He says it seems like it really has its head on straight about online content. He believes it will work out in the end. The Wii, on the other hand, he says will be a valuable training-ground for developers who serious "need to learn new ideas." Incidentally, three people who make games based on anime licenses all seem most excited about the Wii.

If Nintendo's desires are realized, it won't be too long before the image of Grandpa hunching furiously over his DS Lite and murderously screaming "Blue" joins that of the bespectacled nerd in the ranks of uninformed gamer stereotypes. In an effort to reach out to those who would normally shy away from electronic devices and their confusing beeps and boops, several forthcoming and readily available DS games have recently been shoved under the Touch Generations banner. The range highlights Nintendo's popular "non-games", titles that are meant to be approachable by any person, regardless of their previous gaming experience.
In North America, games like Nintendogs, Brain Age and Sudoku Gridmaster seem to gravitate towards the label quite naturally, but it seems that the selection differs significantly from that of other regions. Anthropomorphic neighbour sim, Animal Crossing: Wild World, slots right in with Electroplankton in Europe, but the choices of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Trauma Center: Under the Knife seem to fit in less comfortably. The latter two titles are far more traditional, with linear stories, clear conditions for success and failure and, in the case of Trauma Center especially, a more pronounced difficulty level that requires intricate stylus strokes--lest your patient's internal organs become reduced to a bloody mush (technical term). In other words, all the stuff that the mythical casual gamer doesn't want.
The Japanese selection is almost the exact opposite, filled with English trainers, dictionaries and travel guidebooks. If you looked up "game" in one of those dictionaries, you'd likely find a description far removed from most of these titles. It raises an interesting question, then: What constitutes a game that, according to Nintendo's mantra, anyone can pick up and play? Is it a game that almost exclusively relies on intuitive touch screen controls? Or is it something with simplistic gameplay mechanics? Perhaps it's not even a game at all. Nintendo's pretty clear about the kind of people they're chasing with the DS and the Wii, but things seem less vivid when it comes to matching specific games with specific audiences. With games being such unique and often personal experiences, it's doubtful that the line between hardcore and casual will ever become especially obvious.

In an E3 presentation positively rammed with new titles, information and three grown men prancing around the stage with wands like fairies, one of the most exciting announcements at Nintendo's press event concerned WiiConnect24. However, such was the sheer reckless pace of the conference, we didn't really get to learn as much as we'd have liked.
Now, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has divulged a few new snippets of information concerning Wii's permanent internet connection, speaking to Japanese website TechOn.
Previously, we'd known that WiiConnect 24 could be used for things like enabling other visitors to scope out your Animal Crossing village while you're tucked up in bed, but now Iwata has revealed that the company plans to offer new content for both Wii and DS on a regular basis.
Iwata explains that Nintendo intends to make games last beyond their normal shelf-life by adding new content to its titles regularly. His hope is that by offering new content, people will slap on a game every day to see what's new, expanding its life way beyond the initial period after purchase. Elaborating further, Iwata says, "To lead users to do that, we need to offer something new each day. That is why we thought of a system that would allow us to change our offerings during the night.
"I feel that allowing the system to stay connected to the Net throughout the night is a valid application of semiconductor technology."
What's more, Nintendo also suggests it will offer downloadable DS demos, which will arrive automatically overnight on Wii (you'll know you've got new content if the special front-panel LED is on when you wake up in the morning). The demos can then be transferred over to the DS and, presumably, played around on the tube to work. Hoorah!
"This will, of course, be possible in gaming stores too," Iwata states, "but I think users will enjoy being able to do this within their homes. The key merit here is having promotional material delivered to your home, instead of having to go collect it yourself..."
Perhaps even more interestingly, Iwata gave what could be considered an indication of how much games on the Virtual Console might cost. "When creating a packaged game to be priced at 5,000 yen, developers tend to feel the need to create a rich game. Yet it is possible to create a reasonably entertaining game in 2 months with a team of three. Offering such games for 500 yen [2.40 GBP approx] over a network could lead to a reasonable number of people purchasing it. By offering an environment that allows this, we hope to encourage more developers to pursue basic yet enjoyable gameplay."
Having said that, Iwata is still keen to point out that there's still a place on Wii for traditional console games with plenty of depth: "Such games are important in their own right, and will continue to be in demand. Still - think about it - eating French cuisine or a full dinner each day would quickly lead to boredom, wouldn't it? You'll want a simple bowl of rice and soup every now and then."
Needless to say, every time we hear more about what Nintendo's got in store for Wii, we get increasingly excited. November, if the latest Wii release rumours are to be believed, can't come soon enough as far as we're concerned.

We would say hat's off to our esteemed colleagues over at top technology and gadget guide T3 this morning, with the wider wilder internet suggesting they have dug up some inside info from Nintendo itself, which says that the Wii will debut in Europe on November 6 this year.
But, as is often the case with the smoke and mirrors of the internet rumour mill, you can't quite believe everything you read. A quick call to the T3 office quickly cleared the confusion up, with the T3-ers stressing that this is just a rumour - not established fact.
Despite the date and story coming from impeccable sources inside Nintendo, T3 are saying that it is just that, a strong rumour and definitely not a confirmed date.
Advertisement:Still it's a fascinating one to speculate on, because if true, the Wii would beat the PS3 (which launches on Nov 17) to market by nearly two weeks - and with a price point expected to be in the 150-200 GBP region, it would look a damn attractive proposition.
However, a Monday (which Nov 6 is) is probably not the best day to launch a brand new gaming platform so this one strikes us as fishier than a fishmonger's apron. Besides, Nintendo would probably prefer to get the Wii in shops as soon as it possibly can to put clear blue water between itself and Sony's launch.
So we hope that's cleared things up for you, but there'll no doubt be further Wii launch date speculation to come. We'll keep you posted with all the latest.

At the spry age of 20, classically-trained Koji Kondo joined Nintendo and, using 3 monophonic "instruments" and a "drum track" noise channel, composed some of the most memorable and everlasting theme music in gaming history, including all the Mario and Zelda titles (not to mention the seminal Super Smash Bros. Melee score, alongside a few others). So it is a little more than amusing to watch Kondo conduct his own work on the Wii Music Orchestrator at this year's E3.
