Final Fantasy 5 Spoof has been updated to version 1.10!
Version 1.10 improves upon the previous release in several ways:
1.) Cool it with the offensive humor and “punching down”: If v1.00 was about applying the wisdom gained from age 15 to 25 to reduce the amount of crude humor in the spoof, v1.10 is about applying the wisdom gained from age 25 to 35 to reduce actual harm caused by the spoof. The writing isn’t flippant about serious issues this time.
2.) More consistent characterization: There were several places in the spoof v1.0 where the core four would break character in order to advance the plot a specific way or to make a particular joke. This time around, better solutions have been written that don’t require them to break character.
3.) More variety in humor and sentence structure: Several parts of the script were enhanced with foreshadowing, callbacks, clarity, or additional humor. Several sentences were also improved in subtle ways for increased impact.
4.) Feedback incorporated: Thank you to everyone who wrote reviews, lets plays, forum posts, and emails!
RPG “Spoofs” aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are at all interested, give this one a try! Hopefully it’ll make you chuckle (and hopefully it won’t make you angry)! Cheers!

We're celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Virtual Boy's Japan launch with the final Virtual Boy Sacred Tech Scroll Version 1.0, the most accurate and up-to-date Virtual Boy hardware documentation. More than 7 and a half years have passed since the initial release, but the wait has been worth it! Here is Guy Perfect's patch notes:
- So, so many corrections. The old one was good, but not great.
- New presentation: no longer a glorified text file.
- SVG diagrams have been added to visually depict hardware configurations.
- Now using official port and register names, even if they are proprietary.
- "Miscellaneous Hardware" broken into distinct sections.

Despite a seeming wane in interest in its mobile business, Nintendo is telling shareholders at least that it's not out of the arena just yet.
In the business overview and long-term corporate business strategy section of the company's annual report, Nintendo devotes a notable amount of ink to its mobile business, specifically referring to it as one of the company's "target areas" for expanding access to Nintendo IP beyond its core video game platform business.
"We will continue to expand the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP in areas other than the dedicated video game platform business," the report reads. "The mobile business is one of these target areas. We aim for expanding the scope of our business by creating opportunities for consumers to encounter Nintendo IP through smart devices, which have built an extensive installed base worldwide.
"In addition to the above, for the IP expansion business, we will increase the use of Nintendo characters in different areas through collaborations with our corporate partners, including theme park projects, film, and merchandising. By doing so, we intend to increase opportunities for consumers to see Nintendo IP in their everyday lives and enhance the value of Nintendo IP, the source of our competitive strength."
Earlier this year, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa appeared to be cooling on mobile interest, with Bloomberg reporting him as saying that Nintendo was "not necessarily looking to continue releasing many new applications for the mobile market."

So far, Animal Crossing is currently the most-tweeted-about game worldwide for 2020, ahead of last year's most-tweeted game, Fate/Grand Order.
In a blog post today, Twitter shared data about gaming discussion for the first half of the year on Twitter, noting that so far there have been over one billion tweets about gaming in 2020.
This is a 71% year-over-year increase in conversation volume, a 46% year-over-year increase in unique authors, and approaching the number of gaming tweets made in 2019 total -- which stood at 1.2 billion.
By country, Japanese users made the most tweets about gaming, followed by the US, South Korea, Brazil, and Thailand in that order.
The most-tweeted-about games for 2020 so far are as follows:
- Animal Crossing
- Fate/Grand Order

Nintendo is off to an incredible start for the first quarter of its financial year, thanks to the success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
For the three months ended June 30, the platform holder reported net sales had more than doubled year-on-year to ¥358.1 billion ($3.4 billion).
Net profit rose to ¥106.4 billion ($1 billion), up by a massive 541.3% when compared to the same period last year.
Unsurprisingly, the biggest driver was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game shipped 10.6 million copies worldwide during the quarter, bringing its lifetime shipment to 22.4 million.
The estimated sell-through for Animal Crossing -- i.e. units purchased by consumers -- stands at over 20 million as of the end of June.
This puts the game on course to double the 12 million units sold by 3DS outing Animal Crossing: New Leaf, the previous best-selling entry in the series.
While the ratio differs by region, Nintendo also reports around 50% of all Animal Crossing copies sold in Japan, the US and Europe were digital.
In terms of physical copies, Animal Crossing has been a key system-seller. Of all the Switch consoles sold or played for the first time during this quarter, more than half were used to play Animal Crossing on the first day.

The developers of Goldeneye 25, a fan remake of the Nintendo 64 best-seller, have been ordered to cease development.
In a statement shared via Twitter, the team said it had been "kindly asked" by MGM Studios and license holder Danjaq to shut down their project, and will be complying.
Goldeneye 25 aimed to recreate the single-player missions of the original game on PC in Unreal Engine 4, with plans to launch around its forebear's 25th anniversary in August 2022.
It would have been a free release, but MGM and Danjaq have still decided to protect their rights.
"This was always in the back of our heads as a possibility, but we've tried our best to keep going," the team wrote. "We cannot do a Bond game but we can still do a great game with all the beloved aspects of our favourite '90s action shooter."

Why I Love is a series of guest editorials on GamesIndustry.biz intended to showcase the ways in which game developers appreciate each other's work. This entry was contributed by Marc Williamson, CEO at Tag Games, which is working with Adult Swim on Pocket Mortys and with NaturalMotion on CSR2.
I should make this clear from the off, I'm not much of a Pokémon fan. I completely missed out on the initial craze in the mid '90s. Back then I was filling up my gaming life with more “mature” games; competing with my friends in GoldenEye and Perfect Dark on the Nintendo 64, exploring the futuristic universes of Deus Ex, or playing Counter-Strike with my roommates.
But in the year 2000, I was returning home for the Christmas holidays for the first time since starting University. My 12-year-old brother was playing Pokémon Snap and as I watched him play, I was intrigued. With a couple of weeks to kill at home over the holiday season, I decided to start my own save file.

Super Mario Bros. keeps breaking records three and a half decades after release. A mint copy of a US version of the 1985 game just sold for $114,000 [£90,000] at Heritage Auctions, breaking the previous record set by a copy of Super Mario Bros. in similar condition that sold for $100,150 [£79,000] at an auction last year.
That makes it, according to game collector and journalist Chris Kohler, the most expensive game ever sold to date.
What makes this particular version so coveted? Well, it’s graded at a 9.4 out of 10, which means it’s in near-perfect condition, with everything sealed in the original packaging. It’s also a particular version of the US retail edition, which went through quite a few iterations over time. Here’s Heritage with a neat explanation of the so-called cardboard hangtab that makes this unit so rare:
What’s the deal with cardboard hangtabs? one may, understandably, wonder. Cardboard hangtabs were originally used on the US test market copies of black box games, back before plastic was used to seal each game. As Nintendo began to further establish their company in the US, their packaging was updated almost continuously. Strangely, the addition of the plastic wrap came before the box cutting die was altered to remove the cardboard hangtab. This rendered the functionality of the cardboard hangtab completely useless, since it was under the plastic seal.
There are four sub-variants of the plastic sealed cardboard hangtab box (this particular copy of Super Mario Bros. being the “3 Code” variant) that were produced within the span of one year. Each sub-variant of the cardboard hangtab black box, produced within that timeframe, had a production period of just a few months; a drop in the bucket compared to the title’s overall production run.
In short, a cardboard hangtab copy of any early Nintendo Entertainment System game brings a certain air of “vintage” unrivaled by its successors.
Heritage also outlines the broader picture in terms of the game’s value and nostalgia factor: it is the highest-selling game on the original NES console of all time, in addition to being the first entry in the Super Mario Bros. series and marking the first appearance of series villain Bowser.
Yet why, of all items, is this one worth $114,000? We can’t be entirely sure, as the auction winner remains anonymous. Typically, these buyers, often very wealthy, like to stay that way. That said, it’s certainly believable that someone with the money and dedication to building out the rarest of Nintendo or video game collections would want something like this on the shelf (or perhaps sealed in glass or in a safe).

Nintendo is reportedly ceasing sale of digital codes for its first-party titles through retailers across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
As reported by Nintendo Life, Nintendo confirmed that this was true at least for European retailers:
"After careful examination of the evolving European marketplace in recent years, Nintendo has decided to end the availability of download codes for its own-published software via retailers, effective 1st July 2020," Nintendo's statement reads.
"Customers will still be able to purchase Nintendo eShop funds, Nintendo Switch Online memberships, and add-on content such as the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield Expansion Pass, at retailers across Europe. Download codes for Nintendo Switch software from other publishers will also still be available.

Nintendo has spoken out against the "impermissible" behaviour by select members of the competitive community around the Smash Bros. series, following a wave of serious allegations.
Over 50 top players have been named from the fighting game community, including some prominent Smash Bros. pros and commentators.
The allegations range from unwanted sexual messages and harassment to sexual assault and statutory rape. There are also claims of grooming and paedophilia.
In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, the platform holder said: "At Nintendo, we are deeply disturbed by the allegations raised against certain members of the competitive gaming community. They are absolutely impermissible.
"We want to make it clear that we condemn all acts of violence, harassment, and exploitation against anyone and that we stand with the victims."
More than half of those named have issued statements, either denying or confirming these claims, adding their own accounts of the events in question.
Among the offenders was Smash Bros. player Nairoby "Nairo" Quezada. His team, NRG Esports, has released a statement via Twitter, confirming their partnership has ended.

After 3-month development Super Mario Bros 3.: The Forgotten Worlds has now been released as a Famicom Disk System hack as well! In case somebody doesn’t know it yet, it is an unofficial expansion pack and sequel to Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels including a new character called Kevin (who is Mario’s and Luigi’s dream brother), 9 brand new worlds, new (and 1-2 resurrected) graphics, and many other features never seen in the previous two Super Mario Bros. games.
Big thanks to 4matsy for helping and code supplying, thanks to doppelganger for the SMB2J disassembly! And thanks for Szemigi for his enthusiastic effort that has been put into the project.
Also, this would be the first SMB2J hack that was created with doppelganer’s SMB2J disassembly.

After 5 years and thousands of hours of work, Metal Dreamers is proud to present a complete, and fully playable English translation of Crea-Tech’s Metal Max 3 for the Nintendo DS.
The Metal Max series is a long-running but little-known JRPG series, at least in the west. They combine traditional JRPG gameplay with the free-form progression typical of CRPGs. The games are basically open-world, with not too much in the way of story most of the time, instead focusing on entertaining NPC dialogue and side quests, an interesting world to explore, and TANKS. Lots and lots of tanks, which you can freely customize.
You start the game dead and are soon revived by a mad scientist, but you have no memory of how you died or who you are. Soon, you meet a girl about to be shipped off to an arranged marriage that she doesn’t want. The story unfolds as you try to find out who you were, why you died, and how your fate is intertwined with that girl’s. We hope you enjoy this wacky post-apocalypse!

Three years ago this project started small, with nothing but minor color changes and item edits. Since July 2019 it has become a juggernaut and culminated into a new take on a classic that still feels like what you remember.
In addition to heightened difficulty to keep you awake and on your toes there are new mechanics, items, spells, monsters, and a load of improvements. No more ineffective turns! New and returning classes! Far more strategic combat and greater class synergy add to the reward of more back-and-forth battles. The itemization requires more consideration, and you may find yourself keeping things you easily sold in the original.
The improved battle system should put a smile on your face. Specialty weapons are back - and stronger - along with some utilizing the newly-added perk of inflicting status ailments. Magic users will utilize a far more diverse spellbook than before, as all spells are valuable instead of the original’s roughly half or less.
There is too much to list, but… be on the lookout for secrets.
Detailed charts have been created to aid in each adventurer’s journey just like the classic paper fold-up charts! Make sure you check them out for the nitty gritty details.
