Proof that Wii Sports can help you lose weight via Wiinintendo
Six weeks ago, I began what has become a huge obsession of mine. It is called the “Wii Sports Experiment” (Read my original announcement of this from Early December ‘06). I outlined a 6 week game plan for myself, the idea being that I would continue ALL normal activity and eating habits, and simply add 30 minutes of Wii Sports to my day. For the past month and a half, I’ve stuck to these guidelines very strictly.
I’ve been meticulously keeping track of the following for the past 6 weeks:
- Weight
- BMI
- Calories burned per session/per game (via BioTrainer, thanks Nancy!)
- Body fat % (via a Digital Body Fat Caliper and a body fat scale)
- Heart Rate (at rest)
- Wii Fitness Age
- Additional Notes/Soreness
BMI (Body Mass Index):
- Before: 25.2
- After: 24.0
According to the Heart Lung and Blood Institute, my BMI indicated I was overweight before I started and now I’m at a normal BMI. There is one catch though, your BMI is meant to broadly categorize populations for purely statistical purposes. So, its accuracy in relation to actual levels of body fat is easily distorted by such factors as fitness level, muscle mass, bone structure, gender, and ethnicity. So, take these readings with a grain of salt…
On a more obvious note, my waist (around the belly button/gut) went from 34.5″ to 31″.
Calories:
For my experiment I stuck to four main games and my fitness test (which will randomly choose a game). I did calorie experiments for the following, here is what I found after averaging 15 minutes of “aggressive” play during 3 different days.
- Tennis: Coming in a close second, Wii Tennis was the runner up in calorie burning activities for Wii Sports. I burned an average of 92 calories during a 15 minute period. Like most of my game playing during the experiment I played each game fairly aggressively and would perform full swings, move left and right, and not take any breaks.
- Bowling: One of my favorite Wii Sports games also clocked in at the lowest of the three games I tested for calorie burn. I burned an average of 77 calories during a 15 minute period. Again, I played aggressively, taken steps toward the lane and bowling with a full swing of the arm. No breaks were taken and I played the game fairly quickly.
- Boxing: The clear winner here. I burned and average of 125 calories during a 15 minute period. I would like to point out that I would punch with full power, move as if I were really dodging, and hoped/bounced around like a real boxer would.
Body Fat %:
For most fitness guru’s and I guess the real question here, was “How much body fat did I lose?” The answer, a fairly significant amount. I took my body fat once a week (sometimes twice) using two methods, one was a Digital Body Fat Caliper and the other a body fat scale. I averaged the readings of the two and here are the results:
- Before: 19%
- After: 17.2%
According to The American Council on Exercise, I went from being in the “acceptable” category to being in the “fitness” category. This data really shows a lot of what I accomplished. I lost almost 2% of my body fat by doing nothing more than playing video games for an extra 30 minutes everyday.
My goal now (after the experiment has ended) is to get to 14% body fat, and I’ll be doing that by continuing my experiment even after it’s over. It’s funny how once you start something that you HAVE to do everyday, you begin to miss it if you don’t do it, even if you find it tiring or unpleasant. (Reminds of the kid in the book “How to eat fried worms” and how he continued to eat worms even after his bet was over.)
Heart Rate:
To be honest with you I only checked this when I started and when I stopped, so I don’t think the results are as rock solid as some of the others, non-the-less I saw a slight decrease in my resting heart rate.
- Before: 82
- After: 68
Wii Fitness Age:
This really has nothing to with actual fitness, considering a lot of the games score your Wii Fitness Age based on skill more than your fitness or endurance levels, even so I started at a fitness age of 46 and then after that I never went below 30 for the entire six weeks. I hit the lowest Wii Fitness Age on January 4th, with an age of 20.
Some other quick Wii stats: I’m Pro in Tennis with a 1876 score, pro in Bowling with a score of 1345 (high score 257, should be 300, but my dogs got in my way!), pro in boxing with a score of 1120.

New game released for Nintendo DS:

features
Draw Wario's eight disguises: By sketching a symbol on Wario, the player puts Wario in outfits that give him powers, such as Thief Wario's tackles and Cosmic Wario's laster blasts. The player also uses the stylus to wield powers.
Explore environments: Wario travels the globe in ten missions that span nine exotic locations. The player must attack many enemies found in each location and also use Wario's disguises to get past puzzling obstacles.
Play mini-games to unlock chests: To pick the lock of each chest, the player must play one of eight stylus-driven mini-games that grow more difficult as the game progresses.
description
When Wario sees a television series about a thieving master of disguises, he dives through the TV screen, steals the theif's quick-change wand and takes over the whole show. Episode after episode, he breaks into exotic locations, like a luxury liner, watery ruins and an Egyptian pyramid!

Smooth Moves is certainly no 'Game of the Year,' but it's hard to imagine a Wii owner who won't be adding this game to the collection. It's almost a necessity, as it unlocks all of the wonderful, albeit odd, potentials of Wii's technology. WarioWare is a madcap tutorial tool.
It's unfortunate, as Eurogamer seems to allude below, that Smooth Moves has been billed to be more than what it is (a series of microgames). This is Wii's first significant title of 2007; and Smooth Moves will have to carry the associated burden for months to come. As such, the game will surely lead to disappointment for some. Still, there's no denying that WarioWare is capable of offering the premiere Wii experience.
GameSpot (91/100) - "The game comprises more than 200 "microgames" ... But because this is a Wii, and not a DS, the range of these games has greatly expanded ... In a technical sense, some of WarioWare looks like absolute garbage. But that's only because there's such a huge variety of very deliberate visual styles ... this is a fantastic-looking game, especially in 480p ... it's also a terrifically charming, funny, and nefariously addictive game that you can play alone. But it gets even better when you have a crowd on hand to witness the weirdness with you."
IGN (82/100) - "What really makes WarioWare: Smooth Moves a great introductory title is the sheer amount of style that went into the game ... and the crisp look of Smooth Moves leaves the GameCube version [Mega Party Game$] in the dust ... this version wraps the games up in a more entertaining, stylized, and polished way ... Smooth Moves still has a few downsides that up the learning curve substantially ... the game will make use of the Wii's IR sensor ... [so] it can be a hassle to have a mini-game failed because the Wii-mote wasn't technically pointing at the TV like it should have been ... It's not perfect, it isn't the best in the series, but WarioWare: Smooth Moves is an essential piece of the Wii collection, as it's as much fun ripping through it in single player adventures as it is to shove the controller off on unsuspecting houseguests or non-gamers months and years down the road."
EuroGamer (70/100) - "[What] differentiates Smooth Moves from the existing WarioWare titles is that it grants players a degree of prior explanation to the various control 'poses' you must adopt ... And once you've familiarised yourself with all 19 forms in rapid succession, the game becomes less about being introduced to new control systems, and, thankfully, more about the hilarity involved in engaging with all 200 microgames ... Just like the GameCube version [Mega Party Game$], though, there's not a huge amount of mileage to be had out of playing it in single-player mode ... you'll romp through them in a couple of hours ... As with all the WarioWare games to date, the stylised visuals are about as deliberately simplistic as any game out there, but nevertheless have a huge amount of charm despite the familiarity ... If there's one overriding criticism, though, it's the feeling that the game's building up to something, but that something never really arrives ... we can't deny that we were expecting much more from Nintendo. The way the game utilises the controller is beautiful and - as ever - the humour superb, yet it's a game short on long-term appeal because it never really dares to test players. Much like Touched! [DS], its focus appears to be more of a snappy technology demonstration than of providing a lasting challenge, and it's puzzling why Nintendo and Intelligent Systems couldn't have delivered on both counts."

Weally. In posting his impressions of Wario Ware: Smooth Moves, Chris Kohler at Game|Life adds yet another title to his 4:3 Hall of Shame. Joining Rayman: Raving Rabbids and Trauma Center: Second Opinion, Wario's waggle-fest only supports a 4:3 display ratio, generally known as fool fullscreen. While it's easy to agree that the lack of proper widescreen support doesn't impact on the game's fun, it still remains an annoying oversight, especially for HDTV owners.
The Wii's shunning of HDTV support is an understandable topic (and already debated to death), but inconsistent EDTV and widescreen support just seems lazy in the year 2007. Several Gamecube and PS2 games provided different display modes -- heck, a widescreen mode is one of the selling points for the Wii version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Come on Nintendo, put things in perspective here.

Super Mario Bros. Special was a remake of Super Mario Bros. for the NEC PC-8801 computer in japan (among others, I believe), done by Hudson. It's actually hard to call it a remake, as it's pretty much an entirely new game. Strange music, odd graphics, some mean glitches, and you progress one screen at a time, though the screens tile in such a way that you can still see a bit of where you came from. Very interesting stuff from the 57 year old Youtube user powerful nana, who has lots more obscure stuff, if you browse his profile (PC-8801 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jad-ozqrUZ0"]Popful Mail for one). So for SMB Special, check out World 4 if you only check one...it's got glitches and weirdness galore. The others are worth watching too though, he's basically got the full game in there. world one to get you started, if you want the full experience. Hudson Bee powerup in there, and there's Hudson logo in world 4 as well. Really easy to do the infinite extra lives trick in this one, it appears, but it also looks like you really have to know what you're doing in order to make this game work.

Wario is set to return to DS in a brand new 2D platform adventure called Wario: Master of Disguise and, although very little has been said about the game, the official Japanese website has updated with a run of new in-game videos that reveal its unique gameplay mechanic.
Wario will tackle the various puzzles and obstacles that he encounters by changing into a selection of different costumes, each giving him new powers. And players will switch through these costumes using quickly-drawn gestures on the touch screen.
The videos show Wario performing his money-grabbing antics in seven different costumes, including Spaceman Wario, which can shoot lasers, Graffiti Wario lets players conjure blocks on the screen by drawing squares, Doctor Wario, which scans the world for secrets, and many more of his ingenious powers.
If the gesture system proves to be easy to use and is used cleverly, Wario: Master of Disguise will be another big hit for the DS.
The game launches in the US on March 3, with a European release expected shortly after.

New Zealand Story may not mean much to younger gamers, but the granddad-aged gamers (Oi! I remember it - Ed) will fondly remember it from one of the best arcade games of the eighties.
The DS remake, New Zealand Story Revolution, looks to bring back much of the original game's charm and is bound to be a nostalgic treat for fans of the little yellow chick.
Rising Star Games has already confirmed that the themes of the worlds will remain untouched from the original, but will have all-new layouts.
NZSR will also challenge the player with new touch-screen puzzles, as can be seen in one screenshot where the player must catch Tiki, you character, on the bottom screen before he falls onto the spikes below.
There is currently no release date for NZSR, but as it's been in development for some time now, we're expecting it to land by the Summer this year.

Bomberman Land Touch! hit American stores just before Christmas, but for those of you still awaiting a UK release, here are a bunch of new screens showing off the adventure mode.
In the new adventure, you explore a pirate theme park called Bomber Island, defeating enemies in a number of different puzzles to earn gate keys and unlock new areas.
Sounds pretty generic to us, and we're still not sure if any Bomberman game will ever have an adventure mode that lives up to the awesome multiplayer experience. But it's our old friend Bomberman, so we're willing to give it a shot. And if it's rubbish, there's always the wireless eight-player battle mode to make up for it.
Bomberman Land Touch! has yet to be given a UK launch date. We wish they'd hurry up about it.

CraigT posted this news:
Over the last few weeks i’ve been looking into how fast SpeccyDS currently runs and how it can be optomised to handle some of the new features. Therefore, I added a simple speed meter that displays the percentage speed when compared to a real Spectrum. The results were quite suprising…
When idling in Spectrum BASIC, SpeccyDS ran at 134% of a real Spectrum. When under load (I used the menu screen of Cobra), the speed fell to 116%. Far to low for my liking.
I knew that my display routines were not the best in the world. I had put them together with a ’just get it working’ attitude and I knew that there were savings to be had. With this in mind, I tried disabling them so I could just measure the speed of the CPU core. The speed jumped up to a massive 495%/312% (BASIC/Cobra)!
Obviously there was something seriously wrong in the display routines. After a lot of swaping and re-coding, i’ve managed to get the speed up to a much more impressive 210%/168%. The change in the code will also let me use the DS hardware to scale the Spectrum display to allow borders to be shown. I’m not sure how practical this will be, but it will be nice to have the option.
Unfortunatly, this speed boost seems to have broken my sound code. It doesn’t look like the CPU syncronisation enjoys going over the 200% speed barrier. It is a bit odd to have problems because SpeccyDS is running too fast

We have extreme amounts of love for anything game-related, the wackier the better, but even if we didn't, it would be hard not to coo over this Nintendo-themed baby blanket. Gotta hook 'em while they're young, after all, if we want to make them lifetime gamers.
We tend to think the best part of this particular blanket is that the mushroom is up top, at optimal gnawing range.
