"Nintendo has offered a great gateway to bring classic SEGA titles such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Altered Beast and Toe Jam & Earl to Wii console owners," said Scott A. Steinberg, Vice President of Marketing, SEGA of America, Inc. "This is only the beginning though, as you can expect to see more announcements regarding other SEGA classic titles coming to the Wii Shop Channel in the coming months."

Nyko is another company jumping into the fray and answer our calls to create a rechargeable battery pack for the Wii-mote. Joytech showed off their rechargeable station last month, with disgusting nunchuk holding claws, but pretty sweet recharge through USB.
The Nyko 87000 charge station comes with 2 NiMH rechargeable battery packs, six foot power cable and the battery packs are "rubberized" for grip. So, how much is it? Funny thing ... the guys who can give us that information are lost at CES in Vegas. We'll update this post as soon as we can give details on release date and cost. It's just nice to know that our Wii battery budget, which is a large expenditure within the Wii's hidden cost, will soon be no more.

Those of you lucky enough to get a Wii on launch day have probably already blazed through Twilight Princess and are clamoring for more Zelda goodness. Well, if you don't mind going through back to two dimensions and undertaking some light ROM hacking, Parallel Worlds means more Zelda, less waiting.
This massive hack to the SNES' Link to the Past, released on Dec. 30, was the product of four years work by dozens of contributors, and the results are pretty astounding. A completely new story, new overworld and dungeon maps, new items, new characters and a new interface make this more like a full-on sequel than a simple sprite hack.

In short: Smart, slick, cheap(ish) and fun. GameSetWatch points to Western-Game-Developer-In-Japan-blog Japanmanship, which was a good rundown of how the Wii is fairing in the Japanese market. Insights include:
The Japanese like their slick designs and that may explain why the Gamecube wasn't quite the success Nintendo was hoping for. But the Wii is small, compact, slick and clean. Exactly the kind of thing the Japanese go ape-shit over. Compare that to the curved, bulky designs of both the Xbox and PS3 and it may give a little clue as to the apparent early success of the Wii.
...Price is probably the clincher. If you're earning little money, as a lot of Japanese are, and you have a family to support, 60,000 Yen (US$ 500, EUR 380) for a toy is simply too much of an expense. 25,000 (US$ 210, EUR 160) though reaching the upper limits of impulse-purchase bracket is a much fairer price to ask for a console and will probably push those people on the fence towards the Wii...
Good points, all of them. The post comes with a fitting nod at the competition.
In the long run only a fool would predict the PS3 will fail; Sony has an incredibly strong brand in the Playstation and even their recent hubris and bad decision making can't kill a whole console line outright. No, the PS3 will do admirable sales eventually, I am sure of it. The Wii though has a head-start and has already won the battle for the hearts and minds of the Japanese public.. Agreed. For all the baiting and name-calling, Sony is far from out, but just started out on the wrong foot. Several times.

Entertainment retailer HMV has acknowledged the Nintendo Wii was one of its hottest products this Christmas - but the lack of stock available to sell has left the chain frustrated.
The company was chosen as the official UK launch partner for the Wii, and its flagship Oxford Street store hosted a midnight event attended by Nintendo UK boss David Yarnton along with several celebrities.
While game software and hardware helped the retailer perform well in the competitive Christmas period, pre-ordered stock quickly sold out - and HMV could have shifted many more units had there been enough to go around.
"Games products, particularly from the new Wii range, proved to be among our strongest performing titles - which only served to underline our sense of frustration that we did not have more units of the Wii console to sell," a HMV spokesperson told GamesIndustry.biz.
Despite the lack of stock, the entertainment specialist did reveal it enjoyed a successful Christmas in a market that saw heavy discounting of products even before the advent of the January sales.
"In what was a highly competitive market and despite very challenging retail conditions, HMV more than held its own - instore and online," the spokesperson confirmed.

2D-style scrolling space shooters has become an underground scene nowadays, but the hardcore of you that still love a good bullet-dodging session should get excited about Nanostray 2.
The first game was a little disappointing, with a flawed weapon change system and a weird view perspective, but that all looks to be fixed - i.e. taken out - in the sequel, and it's looking ace.
If you're the sort to get all excited about full-screen-sized enemies firing crazy amounts of bullets onto the screen, or seeing the action switch manically from vertical to horizontal scrolling gameplay, check out this one-minute trailer now.

We know - all WWII games tend to look the same nowadays, but these two shots offer a sneak preview of the action in Medal Of Honor Vanguard in development for Wii and PS2.
They're full of guns, soldiers, destroyed buildings and fire - no surprises there, but nevertheless look pretty good.
We're not sure which specific format these screens are taken from - EA labelled them as Wii/PS2 screens. But with the gun aiming off-centre in both screens, we suspect they could be from the Wii game, which we expect to have graphical enhancements over the PS2 version.
Take a look for yourselves and tell us what you think.

id Software's John Carmack has indicated that the developer is "hoping" to develop a DS version of Orcs and Elves, its first-person, turn-based fantasy RPG on mobile phone.
Although nothing's definite, in an interview with Wired Carmack spoke of a hope to move over to the Nintendo handheld with title and about "enhancing the cell phone game on there". It "would be our first real direct entry back into the Nintendo world", he said.
He continued, "We've never had a close, good relationship with Nintendo from like way back, when we had some back [bad?] experiences really early on..." - relating to "... Wolfenstein stuff...", apparently.
"...and we were always just kind of peeved at the whole Nickelodeon censor arrangement with Nintendo. So we've kept them at arm's length for many console generations now."
But it appears that relationship could be about to change for the better.

Nintendo Wii has sold 989,118 consoles in Japan since it went on sale on December 2, compared to 466,716 PS3s sold since November 12, according to stats release by Tokyo Research and publisher Enterbrain.
Although this could partly be put down to manufacturing issues for Sony that lead to a massive shortage of PS3s for the launch period, this is a phenomenal success for Nintendo.
With Wii's shooting off shelves like crazy - in fact, they're hard to find in retail stores around the world - this success looks set to continue well into 2007.

Within the next two months, you will be able to download some of the best Nintendo games ever made onto your Wii, including Super Mario World and Ocarina of Time, Nintendo has revealed.
Releases have been reasonably slow on the Virtual Console so far but things look like they'll be much better in coming weeks, with Nintendo promising 36 games to arrive by the end of March.
20 Nintendo titles on the way will include the aforementioned titles, along with Super Street Fighter II: World Warrior and Super Probotector on the Super NES.
The Mega Drive section will get nine new games, including Streets of Rage, Bio-Hazard Battle, Bonanza Bros. and Comic Zone.
And Soldier Blade, Double Dungeons and New Adventure Island are three of the seven games promised from the Turbografix.
It seems we'll finally be given some proper classics to play (Super Mario Bros. 1 is great but a tad aged now) and with many of you guys expressing concerns of a possible games drought in the CVG Comments forums, the VC will serve as a nostalgic gap filler.

My first NDS homebrew application has just been released. It's a collection of utilities useful for the maintenance of the media card you are using with your flashcart.
At the moment of this first release, two utilities are included:
- The first one checks, and optionally fixes, any errors found in the filesystem of your media card. This is basically the same thing that you do under Windows when you run "Scandisk", but it saves you the hassle of having to turn on your computer, remove your card, connect it to the PC, etc...
- The second utility will be mainly useful for users of Supercard family flashcarts. Such carts show ROMs and programs sorted by date. Many users (including me) prefer to have them sorted alphabetically, which is exactly what this utility does.
Please report any comments/bugs/appreciations .
Disclaimer:
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROGRAM MESSES WITH THE FILESYSTEM OF YOUR MEDIA CARD, WHICH MIGHT RESULT IN A DATA LOSS. THEREFORE, BEFORE USING IT, ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP OF ANY IMPORTANT DATA.
Downloads:
- Binaries
- Source
The program uses a hacked version of Chishm's libfat to allow for raw I/O:
- Source
- NDS binaries
- GBA binaries (untested)

Heres whats posted on the official site
We are happy to report that we now have a full stable fix for the qkin problem. This is an FPGA logic update which fixes a known hardware issue affecting many users. We are releasing this fix as a public beta. We will move towards a final release if no serious issues are found.
As this is a hardware logic update, it will take slightly longer to apply then a normal firmware update, and the progress bar will proceed more then once. It is important that you leave your usb cable connected until a message box appears telling you that the update has completed. The LEDs will turn off during the update, and will turn back on when the update is complete. After the update, the updater will still report the firmware version as 1.0.2, this is normal.
With this release, our firmware version stays at 1.0.2, and the hardware version is brought up to 1.0.1. The next release of the updater tool will be able to show the firmware and hardware versions separately.
Before applying the update, users who have been affected by the qkin problem should format their DS-Xtreme, and it is recommended to copy the 1.0.2 skin folder, available below, back onto the device.
We would like to take this time to again thank everyone for their patience with us as we developed this fix, and also to apologize for the inconveniences this bug has caused. We would also like to thank all of the users who helped us in resolving the issue, especially those users who sent us their devices for analysis, and all of the initial beta testers.
--Aphex

# Added in fallback so foreign languages without help translations will still display english help.

# Redid home screen splash to instead be an overview of the day.
# Made it so the browser doesn't sequentially or randomly play playlist files in sound mode, and changed the playlist icon.
# Rewrote a lot of the HTML renderer. It renders slower now, but will load much much longer pages.

* Added bullets and numbered lists
* Stopped extra whitespaces from appearing
* Changed formatting for <div> and <p> tags
* Added <hr>, <big>, <tt>, <code>, <strike>, <h6>, <frameset> with <noframes>, <sub>, <sup>, <em> <strong>, <cite>, <dfn>, <var>, <samp>, <kbd>
* Ignores <script> and <style> tag contents isntead of rendering as text
DSOrganize is meant as a homebrew organizer application for the Nintendo DS that should have come built in in the first place. It is by no means comparible to a full-fledged organizer such as a palm, and it is not planned to become an operating system, video player, or anything similar.

New release of DSFTP by bjoerngiesler
Hi,
I've uploaded DSFTP 2.4 to http://giesler.biz/~bjoern/en/sw_dsftp.html. This version has no changes except that it supports chishm's DLDI interface.
What does that mean?
It means that
o out of the box, DSFTP supports nothing but SuperCard CF anymore. But:
o DSFTP can be patched to support any card for which a DLDI driver exists.
This greatly relieves me from having to try to support cards that I don't have access to, and it greatly helps you, the users, because your card will be supported by DSFTP as soon as a DLDI driver is released for it. (Again, a big thank you to chishm is due from everybody.)
How to patch:
o download DSFTP 2.4 from http://giesler.biz/~bjoern/en/sw_dsftp.html
o download dlditool and the appropriate DLDI for your card from http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI
o patch DSFTP 2.4 with dlditool and the DLDI file
The current release still uses a patched gba_nds_fat, which includes drivers for a lot of things other than SuperCard CF. So theoretically every card supported by DSFTP 2.3 should still work in 2.4. But don't rely on that.

Tried to find a Nintendo DS recently? One minute they're sitting happily on the shelves of every megalomart in the country, and the next they're nowhere to be found. In some areas they're even scarcer than Nintendo's big holiday seller, the Wii.
In fact, retail tracker site iTrackr, which records availability of 20 or so high-demand products, currently rates the DS between 4 percent and 14 percent availability, depending on the color -- comparable to the Wii at 7 percent. The big online retailers sell out within minutes, and some haven't had stock at all for over a week. Hardly what you'd expect for a device that's been on the market for over two years, is it?
Contrast that with the just-released PlayStation 3, which -- contrary to all our expectations -- is starting the New Year with far higher availability than in previous months. Online, consoles are readily available with and sometimes without bundles, and they're turning up in plentiful supply at the usual chain stores. In other words, it looks like the PS3 drought might be already over.
But in spite of the higher profile consoles, the DS has been outselling absolutely everything else for months. Back in November -- the most recent month for which US sales figures are available -- almost a million DSs made their way home with eager purchasers, easily making it the biggest selling console that month. It does well back home in Japan, too: it shifted nearly half a million DSs in the week of December 18-24, more than three times the sales of its closest rival, Sony's PSP.
Nintendo DS Lite...
...M.I.A.
We asked Nintendo to clarify the reasons behind the current DS shortage, but received no response by press time. It's possible there's some problem with the DS's distribution in the US. Maybe Nintendo's efforts are focused so tightly on maintaining Wii availability that its handheld cousin is taking a back seat. Perhaps DS units are being diverted to meet demand in other territories. But then, it's as likely that the svelte DS Lite is just that damn popular.
Which is not that hard to believe, when you take a look at the portable's lineup. Phoenix Wright, Warioware, Elite Beat Agents, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, and New Super Mario Bros. all rate as some of our favorite games on any console, portable or not. And with 2007 holding the prospect of Pokemons Diamond and Pearl coming in April, Sim City DS, more Zelda, and even Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, the DS demand is not going anywhere.
-------
12/5/07 4.30PM UPDATE: Nintendo sent us an official statement in response to our queries about the sudden DS shortage: "Nintendo DS Lite is the best-selling video game system in the world right now. It has an amazing library of great games for people of all ages, which only adds to its popularity. Nintendo DS Lite proved to be a huge hit for holiday shoppers, which undoubtedly resulted in some spot shortages in various regions. As with all our products, we're working to keep the supply chain filled to meet consumer demand, and the DS Lite should be more readily available over the next couple of weeks. We expect the popularity of DS Lite to continue well into 2007 and beyond."

In the youtube video, we see one avid Wii Sports player find a perfect rhythm and spot to fling balls down the lane. So perfect, in fact, that he bowled a perfect game! It's probably not the first time someone has rolled a perfect game in Wii Sports: Bowling, but it is damn impressive nonetheless.
