The original NES might not have been able to play a game without being blown on, but over the years it has proven to have millions of household uses beyond simple TV entertainment. You can use it to tell time, play music, watch DVDs, or even run Mac software.
Now, thanks to the glory of yanking out innards and adding hinges, it can even double as a purse.

This stylish console accessory was created by eBayer bikemike13dog, and features a modded NES controller as a handle. It utilizes the unused connector port on the bottom of the system as a lighter holder, and the cartridge slot can either fit a cellphone or his own custom created NES cart cigarette holder (sold separately). The auction ends tomorrow, and the bidding is only $28!

Nintendo announced Japan’s Virtual Console line up for this week and it’s a light years ahead of last weeks release which only had Alien Crush. Popo and Nana make their Wii debut in the Virtual Console version of Ice Climbers. The game is sold for 500 points and this is going to be the Japanese release, which has some differences from the North American release. For instance there isn’t an abdominal snowman, instead there are seals. And yes you can club a seal in the Japanese game. Ikki, a top down perspective ninja game, is the other NES release this week. Moto Roader, a multiplayer racing game from the PC-Engine / TurboGrafx-16 line up is sold for 600 points. Contra Spirits (Contra III: The Alien Wars) is probably the big name release this week. Contra III had missions where you could hang on the back of a helicopter and two mode 7 levels. It’s being sold for 800 points and since Japan is getting it this week a US release can’t be far behind.
Famicom / NES
Ikki - 500
Ice Climbers - 500
Super Famicom / Super Nintendo
Contra Spirits (Contra III: The Alien Wars) - 800
PC Engine / TurboGrafix-16
Moto Roader – 600

Seems sales spinning is a global phenomenon. Seems Christmas 2006 in Australia was dominated by Nintendo. At least, that's according to Nintendo Australia:
In the critical December retail period, the Nintendo DS Lite confirmed its #1 position in Australia, trouncing all competitors in both the handheld and home console market. This is a trend that continued throughout the year, making the Nintendo DS the highest selling games console of 2006.*
Once released, Wii officially broke the Australian record for the biggest launch of a video game system in history. In a few short weeks Wii has established itself as the current 'must have' item. Demand quickly outstripped supply and although new stock shipments are constantly arriving, the Wii remains a very 'hot' item with Nintendo managing to sell over 50,000* units in just 3 weeks of December.
Looks good. Oh, except for the two *'s. Which don't come bundled with explanations, or sources. What are they, Nintendo? Guesses? Hopes? Wishes? Or just regular old spin? Whichever one, this sales/shipped figures fib-fest is getting real old, real fast.

This weeks Virtual Console games go live at 10 a.m. Mountain on the Wii Shop Channel and include Xevious, R-Type 3 and Moto Roader.
Xevious(TM) (NES(R), 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Players control their Solvalou ship and destroy the XEVIOUS forces. Fire the zapper missiles against air-based enemies and drop the blaster bombs down upon ground-based targets. Destroy Andor Genesis to earn bonus points. Unique enemies, interesting background music, a variety of vertically scrolling background environments and many hidden game play features differentiated Xevious from the other shooting games released at the time. Are you devious enough to beat Xevious?
R-Type III(TM): The Third Lightning (Super NES(R), 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): It was believed on Earth that the deadly BYDO Empire had been destroyed -- but now they've returned, as nasty as ever. Their ships and armies are more powerful than before, and Earth will surely be conquered unless the new R-90 ship can destroy them. Powered with engines that launch it into different dimensions, and armed with the Round, Shadow and Cyclone Forces, the R-90 has what it takes to wipe out the BYDO threat.
The BYDO mother ship must be found and destroyed to entirely erase the species from our galaxy.
Moto Roader(TM) (TurboGrafx16, 1-5 players, 600 Wii Points): Moto Roader is a futuristic racing game that allows up to five players to compete against each other. Players use the cash earned when they win a race to power up their machine. Not only can they change the "TIRE" and "BODY" of their vehicles, but they also can add "SPECIAL" parts. Jump over tall obstacles with a "HOPPER" and blast past rivals at incredible speeds with "NITRO." What multiplayer game would be complete without attack items? Use a forward-launching "GRENADE" or a backward-dropping "BOMBER" to blow up and knock away rivals. Outmaneuver rivals in all eight heats to become the champion. Any combination of Wii Remote(TM) and Nintendo GameCube(TM) controllers can be used in multiplayer games..
I like that there seems to be a theme, maybe they'll keep that up.

We reported last week about The Godfather coming to Wii later this year, and now we've got a trailer explaining exactly how the motion controls will affect the game.
Judging from the footage up on the movies tab above, you'll be mimicking such moves as bat swinging, car driving and head-splattering. Up to this point, all the Wii motion activities have been wholesome and fun for everyone - now we've got to wrap our hands around disobedient thugs' necks and squeeze until the sweet release of death embraces their battered bodies. Could be fun but how do you act out 'extort'?
The dude playing Blackhand Edition in this video seems to be intentionally keeping a straight face, trying not to look too excited about acting out a head butt or throwing someone off the second floor balcony. Just let it loose, man - it's only a matter of time before someone finally notices that Wii games are having the kiddies act out violent moves.
Will these subtle changes be enough to play the game all over again? Maybe, but as far as new content goes it looks like the PS3 version (dubbed The Don's Edition) comes out ahead.

The avalanche of info on EA-developed SSX Blur for Wii has snowballed into such a flurry of images and video that it can only be described using cheap snow-based metaphors.
Best of all, this stuff concerns exactly how the controls work. We even get a glimpse of one uber trick that'll have you drawing hearts on the screen as if it were your old Kylie poster.
And because some of you idiots can't stop launching your Wii remotes through televisions and injuring loved ones trying to perform an actual tennis serve, we should probably mention that you don't actually stand on the controller.

The Wii remote controller has much more potential than is currently being seen in the first crop of Wii games, according to the development team at Ignition Entertainment.
But while some have argued that a portion of games using the motion sensing device rely on timing rather than gesture recognition, Ignition's studio manager, Ed Bradley, points to the fact that if it's fun in the first place, players won't care what technology is behind the game.
"Personally I think the controller is capable of translating actions far more complex and energetic than most players are interested in performing even in the privacy of their own homes," said Bradley, in an exclusive interview with our sister site Eurogamer.net.
Bradley points out that developers should never lose site of the real goal - giving players a unique gaming experience - rather than create something technically impressive that adds nothing to the final gameplay experience.
"It can certainly spew out a lot of useful info. The tricky bit is making meaningful use of it all," said Bradley.
"At the end of the day developers want players to have fun rather than impose clever mathematics on them, so if it turns out to be fun only using a simple subset of the controller's gizmos then why worry about how "proper" it is?"
The developer has been working on Mercury Meltdown Revolution for the Wii since it first pitched the idea to Nintendo at E3 2006, giving the company plenty of time to get to grips with the various Wii control methods.
Even so, Bradley revealed that early versions of the game worked well with the Wii controller, an area the developer knew would be crucial to the games success.
"This was something we earmarked a lot of time for as it's vital that it's done properly," he said. "Then to our surprise it ended up being more straightforward than we anticipated."
"It's surprisingly natural and easy to make the transition to the new control method. We've spent a lot of time tweaking dead-zones and acceleration and stuff like that but I'd say the control method worked 90 per cent perfectly the first time we tried it," he revealed.

It may be best known for bringing its hit Japanese franchises such as Resident Evil and Devil May Cry to the West, but Capcom is determined to stamp its mark in Europe ? by originating and creating new IP with local development teams.
"We're looking to expand our business by creating Western content above and beyond what's being created in Japan," revealed Mark Beaumont executive VP of North America and Europe, speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz.
"We've begun an initiative of creating next-gen product for North America and Europe that will show up in the market place in 2008."
And although the company has just expanded Beaumont's remit to cover consumer software in Europe as well as North America, the firm insists the publisher's European division will remain autonomous.
"At the same time we are absolutely focused on the European business being a stand alone entity that can be successful in its own right. All of the efforts that are going on in Capcom are looking to allow us to grow in this territory specifically," he said.
Capcom has already toyed with a similar strategy in the past - resulting in the poorly received Without Warning from Circle Studios. However, the company believes a renewed push to create original content for the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 will help expand into new genres not usually associated with the publisher.
"That is part of our initiative to grow product and broaden our portfolio. To work with the best available talent to create new experiences that people haven't seen before," revealed Beaumont.
"Our Western development initiative is not going to focus on horror products, because we already have them."
"As we look at new genres for Capcom and other products we want to create, we'll be looking to work with developers who have really strong skills and a track record in creating that kind of content," he added.
It's not all original products for 2008, with Beaumont promising familiar franchises will return, as Capcom looks to take a bigger portion of the videogame sector in all regions.
"In 2008 we'll have new versions of existing franchises and new titles that are original IP. We're really starting to ramps things up and become that much more significant in the marketplace," he said.

Nintendo has announced that according to Chart-Track figures, almost 200,000 Wii units were shifted in the UK over the Christmas period - while DS sales topped the half-million mark.
The Wii launched in Europe on December 8 and became the fastest-selling home console ever during its opening weekend. More than 700,000 units were purchased by European consumers, leading to empty shelves across the continent.
First-party title The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess also proved popular, with more than 500,000 copies sold - meaning that over 70 per cent of Wii owners bought the game. Around 320,000 copies of Wii Play, which comes bundled with a remote controller, were also sold.
In the UK, the number of DS handhelds sold during December topped 500,000 units. According to Nintendo, again quoting Chart-Track figures, it was not only the best selling console over the Christmas period but throughout 2006.
The figure for December DS sales across Europe stood at 1.7 million units. It was the best-selling console across the continent in 2006, and accounted for more than half of all December hardware sales.
"We have enjoyed one of the most successful Christmas holidays ever, with both Nintendo DS and Wii selling at staggering rates," said Nintendo Europe marketing director Laurent Fischer.
"We are facing such high demand for both platforms that unfortunately we are facing stock shortages. However we are doing everything possible to combat this by attempting to deliver both consoles and games to retailers on a daily basis."
Nintendo also enjoyed a successful Christmas in the US - more than 1.1 million Wii units have now been sold since launch, and 1.6 million DS handhelds were sold during the month of December alone.

SNK vs. Capcom Card Fighters DS will be released this spring in europe, according to Ignition and Atari.
The card battling game - a descendant of the excellent Neo Geo Pocket series - was originally announced at E3 last year, but nobody's made much noise about it in the interim.
At the time we were told to expect five-deck management, with over 300 cards to accumulate, a single-player "Card Tower" to scale and a two-player link mode.
There's also a "Recycle machine" for making the most out of duplicate cards, and shops for buying new ones.

As with some other recent reports concerning the trio of new consoles, we're not asserting that this decibel test is entirely accurate, as the methodology was far from scientific, but the results were interesting -- and a bit unexpected -- to say the least. While users have long since complained that the Xbox 360 kicked out an unusual amount of fan noise courtesy of the overheating problems it's been plagued with, one lucky owner of all three consoles found that Microsoft's unit actually wasn't the biggest racket-maker in the bunch, all things considered. By utilizing a standard handheld decibel meter, he measured the ambient sound output of the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 just after start-up, playing games sans an optical disc, and during disc playback to judge which console is noisiest overall. While results were noticeably mixed, it was concluded that the Xbox 360, on average, was actually the quietest of the bunch, and while the PS3 remained fairly calm initially, an extended period of play threw its fans (and consequently, the noise factor) into overdrive. Interestingly, Nintendo's Wii kept nearly silent during bootup, but after playing a few rounds of Wii Sports, it actually became the loudest of the three, clocking in at 70dB, or nearly 8dB higher than the nearest competitor. Granted, most folks won't notice the background whir when the 5.1s are thumpin' and folks are getting rowdy on the last lap of Excite Truck, but c'mon, this is the stuff we geeks are made to scrutinize, so be sure and hit the read link to make of it all what you will.

Mario Vs Donkey Kong: March of the Minis will finally be making its way to European shops - for those of you who didn't import the American version months ago.
In March of the Minis, you control the little Mario toys, or 'Minis', by scratching them with the stylus in the direction you want them to run - making for one of the most innovative puzzle games on the DS.
Although a little on the easy side, March of the Minis is a great little puzzler and if you haven't already got it, check it out when it hits stores on March 9.

Samote has released a new game for the Nintendo DS, heres the translated info:
It is about a remake of the play of metal disc present in Beyond Good & Evil (excel play which I advise has all). The goal is to send its four metal discs on the side of the adversary before it does not do it.
History:
14/01/2007: First version!
How to play:
It is necessary to make slip the stylet on the metal discs to launch them
Other information:
There remains the IA and the online mode has to implement so that one can play.
I will add two other modes of play: the traditional metal disc and billiards.

Bob_Fossil has released WordWrap for the Nintendo DS, heres the full info:
Someone asked for a DS version of a popular word jumbling game, so here it is. It's a very early version so there's some bugs and issues with the word generation / selection and the touchscreen.
It uses 2of4brif from the 12dicts zip file for the words.
You'll need to patch the .nds file with a DLDI patcher so it will work with your flash card - assuming there is a DLDI driver for you card. Have a look at http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/ if that last sentence made no sense whatsoever.
You can add extra words to wordlist.dat using a text editor (needs Windows linefeeds) - just be careful with the memory.
Adam
New version 0.03
What's new:
- Stopped words overflowing the screen.
- Added 'wrap' button to jumble the current letters up.
- Displays a message when you clear all the words.
- Tells you how many words you found when you tap 'new'.
- If you enter a word already in the list, the existing word is now highlighted in the top screen.

ttursas has again updated his homebrew game for the DS, heres whats new:
Here's what's new in v0.2.1:
* Added IMA ADPCM compression and playback for the sound effects. Currently only the explosions are IMA ADPCM compressed.
* Added Deflate-like compression to the toolchain, and Inflate-like into the game (didn't follow the RFCs 100%).
* It's possible to shoot holes into the background graphics with the machine gun by enabling the "ALL BULLETS DO HOLES" option.
* PAUSE status flag isn't saved into SRAM any more along with the other status flags.
* Added small explosions to plane collisions.
* Added water drop particles that collide with the backgrounds, and with each other.
* Fixed and optimized background collision data calculation.
* The plane attribute values in the plane selection screen were shown in wrong order.
* The plane attribute values are now used (minus weight). You can expect that the default values will go through a lot of tweaking.
* Decreased stack usage (especially the ARM7 of dswifilib was eating lots of stack).
* The special weapon selection remains when the player dies.
* On the network configuration menu page, it's possible to choose the number of the access point configuration in firmware (1-3) that the game uses.
...
Duh, well, Markus didn't have the time to finish the level data importer, so the levels are
a bit empty at the moment. Anyway, expect that to be fixed pretty soon. Hopefully in
the next release in a week.
